Breweries by State: Which U.S. States Have the Most Breweries in 2025?

As the craft beer movement continues to surge across the United States, you might be wondering: Which state has the most breweries? Whether you’re a beer tourist mapping your next hop-filled road trip or just a numbers nerd (like us) who loves stats with their suds, we’ve got the definitive breakdown.

Thanks to recently updated data from Poidata.io, we now have the most accurate brewery count for every U.S. state—and Washington D.C.—as of July 2025.

Top States for Breweries in 2025

Here are some of the highlights:

California continues its reign as the craft beer king with a staggering 1,491 breweries.
New York holds second with 724, followed closely by Pennsylvania with 678.
Florida makes a strong showing at 611, pushing past Texas.
Washington D.C., while small in size, still boasts a modest 26 breweries, proving good things come in small batches.

We couldn’t forget our neighbors to the north! As of July 2025, Canada has approximately 1,412 breweries, with the biggest concentrations in Ontario, British Columbia, and Quebec.

When Canada Attacked Yuengling!

Thirty years ago, Canada struck at the brewing pride of Pennsylvania. The sudden, unexpected broadside was aimed at Yuengling. At stake was the very definition of “America.”

Yuengling Lager

In 1995, Yuengling wanted to trademark the slogan “America’s Oldest Brewery” for its products. Since 1829, the brewery had been making its beer in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. However, Molson Brewery objected. Founded in 1786 in Montreal, Molson not only argued that it was older than Yuengling, but Yuengling’s use of “America” was “deceptively misdescriptive.” Molson’s attorneys claimed that “America is synonymous North America,” which definitely includes Canada. For Molson, Yuengling was being dishonest with beer drinkers in the United States and around the world.

The Yuengling family was unimpressed. At the time, fifth-generation brewery owner Richard L. Yuengling Jr. quipped, “When Kate Smith stands up and sings ‘God Bless America,’ she’s not singing about Saskatchewan.” Plus, the brewery had been using its slogan since 1957 without any confusion over what country Yuengling was located.

The Trial and Appeal Board of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office took up the dispute. Molson went as far as to introduce a Webster’s dictionary of geography to show that America means North America. Yuengling responded by showing that Molson’s marketing had previously referred to the brewery as Canada’s oldest instead of America’s. Clearly, Molson understood the distinction.

Anyone who has looked at the label of a Yuengling beer lately knows the end of the story. It took nearly four years for the Board to reach its decision. For the board members, there was no evidence that “the purchasing public in the United States would equate the term ‘America’ with North America, rather than the United States of America.” Case closed.

Over twenty years later, all was forgiven. In 2020, Yuengling and Molson announced a joint venture to distribute Yuengling beer farther west… in America.

Anderson Valley Brewing Company Listed for Sale at $7.9 Million

Anderson Valley Brewing Company, one of California’s iconic craft breweries, is officially on the market with an asking price of $7.9 million. The Boonville-based brewery, which has been producing beer since 1987, was listed for sale on BizQuest by Mainsheet Capital, the investment firm that acquired the business in 2019.

The sale includes Anderson Valley’s real estate, brewing equipment, and inventory. Spanning 29 acres in Mendocino County, the property is home to the world’s first 100% solar-powered brewery, thanks to its 126 kWh solar array. Anderson Valley boasts a gross annual revenue of $4.2 million, though cash flow and profitability details remain undisclosed.

This potential sale marks another chapter in Anderson Valley’s storied history. Founded by David Norfleet and Kim and Ken Allen nearly 40 years ago, the brewery was sold to Trey White and two partners in 2010, and then to Kevin McGee of Mainsheet Capital in 2019. McGee, a former attorney for Jackson Family Wines and founder of Healdsburg Brewing Company, had ambitious plans for Anderson Valley but now seeks to exit the industry, citing “owner retirement” as the reason for the sale.

Anderson Valley’s journey under McGee included a significant legal battle with the Reyes Beverage Group, the sixth-largest privately held company in the U.S. After McGee attempted to switch distributors in 2020, Reyes demanded millions in compensation for the “fair market value” of the distribution rights. When McGee refused, Reyes filed a lawsuit. In a key ruling earlier this year, the court sided with Anderson Valley, dismissing Reyes’ claims as unreasonable.

Despite this legal victory, McGee has chosen to step away from the craft brewing business. With a strong brand, solar-powered facility, and over three decades of brewing heritage, Anderson Valley could be an enticing opportunity for potential buyers.

Ballast Point Shutting Down Production in Miramar

Ballast Point Brewing’s headquarters is located at 9045 Carroll Way in Miramar.

Ballast Point Brewing has ceased production at its Miramar headquarters, turning to contract brewing as it continues to focus on distribution and maintain its consumer-facing venues while exploring new brewery locations.

The trend of contract brewing has gained traction over recent years, allowing companies to reduce overheads such as equipment maintenance, staff payroll, and operational costs, while concentrating on sales, marketing, and managing public venues like tasting rooms and restaurants. Notable breweries like Latitude 33 Brewing and Mason Ale Works have successfully adopted this model, with the latter now planning to open a branded taproom after increasing its production capacity through contract brewing.

Ballast Point, one of the largest breweries in the county, follows this path as it suspends operations at its 107,000-square-foot Miramar site, which includes a brewery, bar, and restaurant. This transition led to layoffs within the production staff. The brewery, under the management of Kings & Convicts Brewing, shifted its base to Miramar after purchasing Ballast Point from Constellation Brands in 2019 for a fraction of its initial $1 billion sale price in 2015.

“It’s been a challenging week, but necessary adjustments were needed,” stated CEO Brendan Watters. He expressed that the large-scale facility was unsustainable and not reflective of the original Ballast Point ethos, which he recalls as being more grassroots at Scripps Ranch, operating intensely around the clock.

Since taking over, Kings & Convicts aimed to revitalize the Ballast Point brand, a plan complicated by the COVID-19 pandemic and other setbacks despite increased visibility through local sports sponsorships and new venues like a brewery-restaurant in San Francisco.

In 2022, Kings & Convicts expanded into spaces previously occupied by Saint Archer Brewery, including the Miramar brewery and a Leucadia tasting room, both of which are now managed by Fall Brewing and Duck Foot Brewing, respectively.

Despite these changes, Ballast Point will keep its bar and restaurant at the Miramar location operational, along with its Little Italy brewpub in downtown San Diego, the Home Brew Mart in Morena, and several other venues across California, including in Long Beach and Anaheim.

“We’ve secured a contract with another company to oversee the Miramar brewery. In the interim, they will handle production to supply our taprooms and distributors as we look to establish a new facility in San Diego, ideally with an 80-to-100-barrel brewhouse,” Watters explained. “Our goal is to restore Ballast Point as a premier West Coast brand.”

Ballast Point was best known for its Sculpin series of craft beers and was one of the early forerunners of the craft beer boom in America.
