We’re Back Baby

Good News Everyone! Futurama is back baby! And its going to be fun on the bun! Starting today, July 24th 2023, Futurama is back on Hulu!

Slated for two seasons of 10 episodes each and airing weekly (rather than a full season drop), Futurama has returned for the fourth time. This time coming to the streaming service of Hulu. They are going to be aired in two seasons of 10 episodes each.

The first season on Hulu (season 11 overall) will begin airing July 24th, 2023 and end on September 25th, 2023.

Olde Fortran

Olde Fortran, a beloved recurring beer on the show, is a classic example of the show’s humorous take on everyday life in the future. Fudd Lite

Benderbräu

Bender Brau

In the episode “The Route of All Evil,” Bender, the lovable bending unit, decides to start his own brewery and creates his signature beer called Benderbräu. Although the recipe and brewing process are not explicitly revealed, Benderbräu is known for its distinct flavor and high alcohol content. This fictional beer captures the rebellious and mischievous spirit of its namesake character.

Klein’s Beer

The bottle is called a Kleins Bottle. A Klein-bottle is is based on Möbius loops (one-dimensional surfaces), and is a two-dimensional manifold. It’s a bit difficult to describe in lay man’s terms, but this site has excellent information about Klein bottles.

The joke is that Klein bottles can’t exist in our 3-dimensionel universe (they need four dimensions), but in the future they apparently found a way to produce them.

LoBrau

LoBrau Beer

A brand of beer that was sold in both the 20th and 31st centuries, possibly all throughout the millennium. Its name parodies Löwenbräu beer which is very popular in the United States; it is also a play on words of the phrase “low brow”, which describes a person who has uncultivated or nonintellectual tastes.

Pabst Blue Robot

A 3,000 variant of Pabst Blue Ribbon perhaps? Or a whole new brand? A brand of beer, presumably specifically designed for robots. Consumption by humans is inadvisable due to the presence of throat-bloodying metal shavings. It is a play on “Pabst Blue Ribbon,” a popular beer.

Sam Adams’ Head Boston Lager

Sam Adams Head Boston Lager

Another modern day beer nod, this time to Sam Adams Boston Lager. Incorporating the head museum and the idea of Sam Adam’s Head brewing the beer.

St. Pauli Exclusion Principle Girl

A brand of beer. A dual reference to a quantum mechanics principle (Pauli Exclusion Principle) and real beer brand St. Pauli Girl.

Maltese Liquor

Maltese Liquor is the strongest and most valuable malt liquor ever brewed. It is so strong, that consuming it is fatal to anyone but Robots and Billy Dee Williams, as it causes death of the brain cells. It was also stated to be 210 proof, an impossibly high alcohol content (this would be 105% alcohol by volume).

A bottle of the liquor was kept in Hedonismbot‘s mansion. Bender attempted to steal this bottle, but his plan was foiled by Pickles, who drank its contents.

Slurm

While not an alcoholic drink, the most notable and known drink from the Futurama universe is Slurm. (An equivalent in modern times would be Mountain Dew or possibly the new energy drinks.)

Slurm, the number-one soft drink of the future, is refreshingly addictive. It is produced in a factory on the planet Wormulon by a race known only as the Slurm Worms. Their corporate mascot is Slurms MacKenzie, “The Original Party Worm”. However, the Planet Express crew discovered it actually comes from a giant worm‘s behind.

Fry is a huge Slurm fan, and rarely goes more than 12 minutes without one.

Slurm, the quintessential fictional beverage of the Futurama universe, is a carbonated soft drink that has become an icon of the show. While not technically a beer, Slurm is often associated with partying and excessive indulgence. It is marketed as a highly addictive and sought-after beverage, with its neon green color and unique taste captivating the characters and viewers alike. Although it’s not a beer, it has undoubtedly left a lasting impression on the show’s fans.

Futurama Alcoholic Drinks

Lets get right down to it and find some craft beers with Futurama themed names!

In the upcoming weeks I am going to be reviewing some for the blog (one each week on Mondays to tie in with the Futurama releases). So I will be keeping those specific beers off this list so as to keep them as a surprise.

But here is some others that I won’t be reviewing, so you can see them now:

Zappa Brannigan by The Rambling Root

This is an American Pale Ale clocking in at 7% and has no IBU listed. The Untappd description reads: “This beer is built like a steakehouse, but handles like a bistro. It’s got note of Cham-paggin. It is DOOP.”

Planet Expresso by Burnt Hickory Brewery

This is a Stout – Coffee, at 9% and 10 IBU, its certainly going to give you a kick into space. The Untappd description reads: “An Italian Espresso Coffee Stout.”

Planet Express by Bent Stick Brewing

Listed as a Pilsner – Other, its a 4.5% ABV and no IBU listed hoppy pilsner. The Untappd description reads: “Galaxy Hopped Pilsner”

Good News Everyone by Mars Brewing Company

A 5% ABV, 25 IBU, Farmhouse Ale – Saison by Mars Brewing Company will surely bring the good news from the Professor to you. The Untappd description reads: “Good news everyone! Straight from our shiny metal fermentor machine, not to be confused with a robot named Bender, comes Mars Brewing’s Saison. Rustic, bright, clean, with a balanced nose of clove and fruitiness, this Saison will not disappoint.”

Why Not Zoidberg? by Niantic Public House And Brewery

After all – why not Zoidberg? This is an American IPA, with no IBU listed, and a 6.8% ABV, it’ll have you asking why not Zoidberg … and maybe Where is Zoidberg as well? The Untappd description reads: “IPA showcasing Mandarina Bavaria hops.”

Zoidberg Noise by Phantom Carriage Brewery

This is a bit more of an interesting one – an orange brut IPA. I’m always half on the fence with Brut IPAs to begin with, but the appeal of orange is there. This is a 7.5% ABV Brut IPA.

Robot House Party by Campus Brewing

Robot House!!!!!!!! (I’m sure you heard that in the Dean of Mars University’s voice, I know I did.) This is a New England / Hazy IPA, clocking in at a low 5.8% ABV and 10 IBU. The Untappd description reads: “

Our house Hazy IPA is cleaner, hoppier and more drinkable than ever.

Campus’s Creative Creatures have rebuilt the bot for optimised drinkability.

A simplified, muted malt bill gets out of the way for a boosted hop schedule featuring Simcoe, Mosaic, bio-transformed Sabro and Citra Lupomax.

Minimised bitterness and 5.8% abv bring the party whilst maintaining that classic chalky, moreish water profile that seemingly dries off the palate.”

Bender’s Brau by Turkey Forrest Brewing

Oooh a big boy for Bender! A 9.1% ABV, 37 IBU Belgian Trippel. The Untappd description says: “A complex, spicy and fruity flavor profile, which features notes of clove and banana. The addition of piloncillo adds a touch of caramel-like flavor.”

Benderbrau by Seabright Social

Here’s a different style for the list – an Altbier. Clocking in at 5.3% ABV and no IBU and no Untappd description.

Futurama by Social Kitchen and Brewery

A New England / Hazy IPA by Social Kitchen and Brewery, this is 6.7% ABV, and the description reads: “Light in color but big in flavor. We’re living in the future where soft, creamy IPAs run the world. Tons of citra and meridian hops for aromas of orange julius, melonb& bubble gum.”

Slurm by Burning Brewery

This one is coming all the way from St. Petersburg, Russia. A Fruited Sour, packing 5.5% ABV and 11 IBU. The Untappd description reads: “саур с приятной кислинкой киви и насыщенным яблоком”

Good News Everyone Its My First IPA by Bender Braus Brewing

Good News Everyone – Its My First IPA!

Nearly exactly six years ago I brewed this one my self when home brewing. (Who knows, might even have a bottle forgotten / hidden in the basement still.) I brewed a five gallon batch of this as my first IPA. I named my little home brewery “Bender Braus Brewing”, and with this being my first IPA I gave it the name of “Good News Everyone! It’s My First IPA!”.

I thought it tasted pretty well, was a bit watery, and a bit light on the mouth feel. Alex, Carson, and Alan from Boneshire Brew Works said it was ‘passable’ and a few other home brew buddies said it was a good first try / attempt at an IPA. Some of my family members enjoyed it, but who can really take them for their word right?

It ended up being a 7.09% ABV and 44 IBU IPA American. My Untappd description for it reads: “

Bender Braus Brewing’s first beer (and therefore first IPA). An American West Coast style IPA.

The grain bill consists of Pale Malt (11 lbs 8 oz), 1 lb of Caramel Malts, and 12 oz of Munich Malt Light.

The hops consists of 1 oz Chinook, 3 oz Cascade, 3 oz of Nugget (totals).

Yeast strain is WLP001 (White Labs), California Ale.

Original gravity is 1.069, and it’s a 5 gallon batch.”

Have you ever picked a beer based on the can art?

Have you ever picked a beer based on the can art? I’ll admit it, I did it. And it was an excellent choice!

It was during the Frederick trip for World MS Day that I wanted to grab a 4 pack when we headed out and I needed to make a quick decision. If you know me, you could have guessed the sunflower can art got my attention.

Anxiety

I’ve shared in another article I live with depression and anxiety (see Amy’s article from last year – Brewfests with Anxiety) I got this awesome sunflower tattoo as a symbol to always fight for my happiness despite the depression and anxiety. So, naturally I grabbed a 4 pack of the Full bloom.

Full Bloom by Idiom Brewing Company

To my delight it felt like the stars….I should say it felt like the sunflowers aligned and it was the perfect beer over a cookout this past weekend. Full Bloom comes in with a sneaky 11% ABV. This Triple New England IPA is delicious and smooth, maybe a little too smooth. It paired perfectly with the chicken, spinach and feta sausages I drank it with. It has an average rating on Untapped at 4.02, which is a bit low in my opinion. There is one review on untapped that says “May just be my new favorite” according to Meredith S., so I know I am in good company.

Full Bloom

Beer: Full Bloom
Brewery: Idiom Brewing Co.
Style: IPA – Triple New England / Hazy
ABV: 11%
IBU: N / A
Untappd Description: Full bodied and deceivingly smooth, this Triple was brewed with a mix of toasted golden naked oats and flaked oats. On top of this lush base, we threw Lotus and Citra Incognito hops into a low-temp whirlpool and then double dry-hopped with Ella, Lotus and Vic Secret. Juicy, creamy and full of a mix of nuanced flavors, like candied grape, orange, vanilla, tropical fruits and a touch of star anise.
Global Average Untappd Rating: 4.02

That first sip is light and tantalizing at the same time. This Triple IPA is the smoothest TIPA that has ever danced across my tongue. You get a few more swigs in you and you can feel that 11% tickling you. According to Scott on Untapped It is “Great balance. Sneaky 11% for sure!” The only thing I know for sure is I’m gonna try to hustle down there again soon to grab another 4 pack. Because I have one left and I’m already looking at it like “My precious”

Weekly Column

Amy is back with her weekly column; just eight (8) days behind. Last week was a bit of a hectic week for Amy and Ben. Friday through Monday – Ben was with Drew in Atlantic City. Monday and Tuesday Amy was very busy with her tremendous work with the Alzheimer’s Association; so she took the week off from her weekly column. (Its ok Amy, we’ll forgive you this one time.)

Last night was Ben’s father’s 69th birthday. (Happy Birthday Paw Paw.) Between the festivities and Amy doing a dogsit she decided to wait until tonight (Monday, June 12th, 2023) for her weekly column.

But we certainly weren’t slacking here at The Beer Thrillers. You can read about our trip to Frederick last Tuesday – (May 30th, 2023), to go to Idiom Brewing (as well as Brewer’s Alley, and Monocacy Brewing Company) to recognize World MS Day.

Tenebris – A barleywine by Adroit Theory

Adroit Theory

Adroit Theory is a craft brewery based in Purcellville, Virginia. Known for its experimental and bold approach to brewing, Adroit Theory specializes in a wide range of beer styles, particularly focusing on high-ABV (alcohol by volume) beers such as imperial stouts, IPAs, and barrel-aged brews. The brewery is also notable for its distinctive and often dark and gothic-themed artwork and packaging.

Gaming Time

I usually find myself drinking IPAs and DIPAs (or even TIPAs) while doing some gaming, but switched it up with Tenebris by Adroit Theory tonight. This was a fantastic beer to sit back and do a “gaming sesh” (as the cool kids call it). The 10.7% slowly crept up on me as I played and provided a perfect buzz for the gaming. And as Josh would say – “Its a Damn Big Beer”.

Beer Review: Tenebris by Adroit Theory

Tenebris (or GHOST Tenebris) is a Barleywine, in the American tradition. The stats for it are:

We haven’t made this beer in over 6 years, but decided to re-address it in the style of an American Barleywine. Full, semi-sweet, and chewy body with a sticky texture offering malt driven notes of honey, toffee, and stone fruit with just enough bitterness for balance.⁠

Brewed with Amarillo + Centennial Hops

Appearance:

Tenebris pours a deep amber to mahogany color with a slight haze, topped with a thin, tan head that dissipates quickly but leaves a delicate lace on the glass. The viscosity is evident, hinting at the rich, high-alcohol content within. Swirling the glass reveals the beer’s thick legs, a visual testament to its bold and syrupy nature.

The clarity of the beer allows light to catch and reveal ruby highlights at the edges, adding to its visual appeal. The minimal head retention focuses attention on the beer’s rich color and inviting appearance, setting the stage for the sensory experience that follows.

Aroma:

The nose is an inviting blend of caramel, toffee, and dark fruits such as raisins and figs. Subtle notes of molasses and brown sugar are present, accompanied by a mild hop aroma that adds a layer of complexity. As the beer warms, deeper aromas of oak and vanilla become more pronounced, hinting at its barrel-aged pedigree.

Inhaling deeply reveals additional layers of aroma, including a faint earthiness and a hint of spice, likely from the interplay of malts and hops. The aromatic profile is rich and complex, drawing you in and encouraging a slow, deliberate tasting experience.

Taste:

The flavor profile is intensely rich and multi-layered. Initial sips reveal a strong malt backbone with pronounced caramel and toffee sweetness, balanced by a robust presence of dark fruit flavors—dates, raisins, and a touch of cherry. As it warms, additional nuances of vanilla, oak, and a slight nuttiness come to the fore, likely influenced by barrel aging. The finish is warm and slightly boozy, with a lingering bitterness that prevents the sweetness from becoming overwhelming.

Each sip uncovers new subtleties, from hints of chocolate and roasted nuts to a whisper of smokiness. The balance of sweetness and bitterness is masterfully executed, making each mouthful a harmonious blend of flavors that evolve on the palate. The complexity and depth of Tenebris ensure that it remains interesting from the first sip to the last.

Mouthfeel:

Full-bodied and smooth, Tenebris has a luscious mouthfeel that coats the palate. The carbonation is moderate, adding a slight effervescence that helps balance the beer’s richness and high alcohol content. The viscosity of the beer provides a satisfying, almost chewy texture that enhances the drinking experience.

Despite its high ABV, the alcohol warmth is well-integrated and adds to the overall enjoyment without overwhelming the other flavors. The mouthfeel is robust yet elegant, making it a pleasure to sip and savor. Each sip leaves a lingering, velvety finish that invites you to take another.

Overall:

Adroit Theory’s Tenebris is a standout example of a barleywine. Its depth and complexity make it an excellent choice for slow sipping and savoring over time. The well-integrated flavors and warming alcohol presence are perfect for cooler weather, making it a great companion for a cozy evening. This beer pairs wonderfully with rich foods such as roasted meats or a decadent cheese platter and can also be enjoyed on its own as a dessert beer.

Another streaming session with my good friend Drew of Knights of Nostalgia means me drinking some fine craft beers and of course, that also then means, future beer reviews of said fine craft beers. And I couldn’t think of a finer craft beer I had that night than Adroit Theory’s ‘The Death of Civilization in Slow Motion I’ (Ghost 907).

My buddy and co-writer here at The Beer Thrillers – Josh Doncevic – absolutely loves and raves about Adroit Theory and is constantly pushing their beers. And I can see why! I’ve had a few in the past, but sadly not many, and hopefully now in the future I will be getting to try plenty more!

Lets Have a Discussion on Can Art….

First, lets have a discussion on can art. I think Adroit Theory is absolutely nailing it. (Here is an article I found from January 31st, 2015 about the can labels for Adroit Theory: Shawn Johnson Signs Can Labels for a Contest). If you are a fan of Warhammer 40K, or steampunk or futuristic dystopic landscape looking art, Mad Max, Fury Road, stuff like that, you’ll love these can labels. Here is a link to The Death of Civilization in Slow Motion I on Adroit Theory’s page, it gives some of the same information thats on the can label here; such as pairings, ingredients, percentages, etc. (It is for a different version of this beer, but the artwork and information mostly holds up.)

For those unaware, Warhammer 40K is a massive tabletop miniatures game that has been around since at least the 90s (back in the day when I used to play it at Omnidon’s in Hummelstown, and then when they moved to be Twilight Games in Paxtonia). My faction of choice was the Chaos Space Marines and the Chaos army in general with the Chaotic God of Korde. Warhammer 40K has gone on to be a massive book library with hundreds of books, as well as some video games, and I believe there is a movie or a Netflix TV show in the works.

You can definitely see some interesting comparisons between the two. And I absolutely love it. Its gorgeous artwork and deserves all the praise it can get. I also love how Adroit Theory does dabble a bit into the pop cultural realm (they’ve sported GI Joe and Cobra beers this past summer over quarantine / COVID-19 as well as the above Cthulhu reference. Interesting note to point out, in the past I did a beer review about Azathoth – see above reference to Cthulhu for why I am mentioning this. But keeping this to a discussion on the can art, I have to continue my gushing and say about how much I love it. I can admit to being guilty and buying quite a few beers based on can labels and beer art – usually due to some pop cultural or nerd culture reference (and oh boy, is there a long list of them that I’ve reviewed here on The Beer Thrillers; I’ll post the full list of links at the bottom of this post), but I am also just as guilty of buying beers based on beautiful artwork as well. And this can be a hit or miss practice. I’ve been burnt many a time, as well as been uplifted and surprised by how good a beer is. Thankfully this provides a wonderful segue here, speaking of beautiful can art…. ….and beautiful can liquid…..

Beer: The Death of Civilization in Slow Motion I (Ghost 907)

Style: IPA – Imperial / Double New England

Untappd Description: A pillowy texture, slight bitterness, and an aroma of tropical fruit with Pineapple and Mango forward notes and Berry and Pine on the finish.

Appearance for this is a beautiful orange, golden glow, and very hazy. Holds up perfectly to the style. Nothing transparent or translucent here, this is pure golden, hazy, dank New England (D)IPA goodness. Wonderful head to it as well, nice carbonation, head retention, and lacing on the glass, with nice dispersed and varied bubbles.

Hmmmm hmmmm hmmm the aroma on this smells just perfectly wonderful. Like a beautiful fruity hoppy aromatic dream. You get a great hop nose-kicking aroma right as soon as you crack open the can, and it mixes in with mango, pineapple, and a wee bit of pine notes from the hops, edging and giving the tropical fruits something to combine with.

Good great Wilbur’s ghost this is a wonderfully smooth beer! It is delicious, tasty, smooth, all the main characteristics of a great New England (D)IPA. There is a wee bit of hop burn at the end, some nice hop bitterness with those pine notes, that makes this not a completely full juicy bomb, and thats just perfect. It compliments the overall hop experience so perfectly well. You get mango, pineapple, berry notes, and the pine notes from the hops, providing a very nice, smooth, fruity, flowery, fluffy like New England (D)IPA. This is (or should be) a standard for the New England IPA and DIPA and TIPA style, like textbook, “Oh you want to learn how to make a New England DIPA? Or you want to know what a really good New England DIPA tastes like? Well here you go!” Textbook definition excellence. The mouthfeel is on point, not too heavy, not watery, not thin, no cloying notes to stick to your tongue or mouth, just a well drinkable beer. The 8% ABV is very nice too; thats a good middle ground. Its not substantially high and its not terribly low either. (For comparison’s sake – Troegs Brewing’s Perpetual IPA – their flagship IPA – is a 7.5%, and Nugget Nectar – their flagship Amber Ale / Red Ale is a 7.5% as well.) So this is really only .5% higher than those two beers, and with how smooth this is, its probably a good thing it’s not much higher. Sometimes too smooth and high ABV just don’t go well together…. especially the next morning. This is a beautiful beer too, well crafted and well made, and an exceptionally terrific smelling beer. The hops work really well in this, and the flavor profile is perfect and on point. The mango, pineapple, pine, and berry are all superb and work so well in conjunction with each other that this is just so extremely tasty. Perfect for a video game session with a buddy.

Ah, don’t worry, I didn’t forget to include it. Previously, in my last beer review I did – Dunkel Shaun (by Great Barn Brewery) I mentioned that going forward, in each beer review, I will devote a section to the brewery behind the beer. In the above mentioned, previous, beer review, I did it before getting to the review, but due to my beautiful segue in this review, I figured I’d post it at the end. So here you have it.

The following stats all come from Untappd. Adroit Theory is located in Purcellville, Virginia. They are labeled a micro brewery and they have a total of 139 unique beers and just a few shy of 354K ratings. They have a global average rating of 4.04 (as of 2.4.21). Their Untappd description reads: “PUSHING BEER BOUNDARIES IN LOUDOUN COUNTY VIRGINIA Located in Purcellville, Virginia, Adroit Theory makes esoteric + style challenging beers with an emphasis on Hazy IPAs, Fruited Sours, Pastry Stouts, and Barrel Aging Projects. I’ve had several beers over the years from Strange Roots Experimental Ales (aka Drai Laag), and I’ve never had a single bad beer from them. Mostly known for their sours, saisons, and the like, this one is actually an IPA.

When I go hiking, I like to enjoy a good ‘hike’ beer, especially at the top or vista point of a beautiful hiking trail. In this case, it was Pinnacle Point in Kempton, Pennsylvania. (Just outside of Hamburg Pennsylvania.) (This beer was also covered in my travelogue about Pinnacle Overlook, Pinnacle Peak, and Pulpit Rock and the hike there, you can check that out here: Pinnacle Overlook, 1787 Brewing Company, and Schaylor Brewing.)

This is another case of beautiful can art. Also, since this was a trail beer, I didn’t have a glass, and drank it straight from the can; like a heathen, a barbarian, an outdoors man, a rogue hiker, a man’s man. …or well, just a person who didn’t feel like carrying around a glass, and hiking for four hours and eight miles carrying a glass that could break, especially while his hiking buddy is a four legged beast that best resembles a wolf on her best days….. (don’t worry Leela, I still love you).

So, this review will be forgoing the “appearance” section, though, I have seen pictures of it on Untappd, and it looks in the pictures I’ve seen, like a light straw colored IPA / saison looking beer, but I won’t go into details, since I did not see it with my own eyes.

Mutant Temple on the hike leading up to Pinnacle Overlook

For any people familiar with Pinnacle Overlook and the hike there; right before you get to the gorgeous vista of the Pinnacle Overlook, there is a giant cairn. Cairn works… but not really. Most people associate cairns with tombstones and what people would do to bury people in places they couldn’t dig the earth up or make a grave for, so they would dig as much as they could, and then cover them in rocks to keep prey from getting to the remains. But the true definition of cairn is: “a heap of stones set up as a landmark, a monument, a tombstone, etc.” (Dictionary.com Definition: Cairn.) (For more about graves…. you can read my beer review on Shallow Grave by Heretic Brewing …. yay for cheap plugs! I feel like Mick Foley!) Anyway, its right before you get to the overlook, its a giant stone and rock heaped pile. The very first time I went and hiked the trail, I almost thought – this was it. This giant pile, this cairn, this heap of rocks and stones, was it, and this was the “view” and the Pinnacle everyone was talking about. (Pinnacle being the height of something.) Thank goodness I walked past it and saw this gorgeous overlook….

Needless to say, this view is a lot better…. A LOT…. better than just a pile of stinking rocks (or non-stinking rocks). To get to this point, it was about a 3.5 mile hike. (Going back down, since I took a different route, and stopped at Pulpit Rocks, it was another 4.5-5 miles, making it 8-8.5 miles all told of just the mountain, plus getting to and from the car.) So, I camped out here a bit with my dog, Leela, which by now anyone reading the blog regularly has heard of quite a bit or seen in the background of pictures (she’s an 11 year old border collie that is commonly mistaken for an Australian Shepherd, named after Leela from Futurama). I didn’t bring food with, since I was going to visit 1787 Brewing Company in Hamburg afterwards, but I did enjoy my beer on the ledge with my faithful furball companion, and then did the treacherous, very rocky hike back down – which is the Appalachian Trail path.

All in all, if you are ever near Kempton or Hamburg area of Pennsylvania, and love beautiful views, where you can see and feel the turkey buzzards, hawks, and other large birds soaring right past your head, this is definitely a great hike and a beautiful view. From Hershey its roughly a 45-50 minute drive.

Mutant Temple by Strange Roots Experimental Ales

Since I’m not doing an appearance segment for this beer review, let me just say, I thought this cairn was the perfect picture opportunity for this beer. It looked alien, strange, mutant like, and would be a Hollywood esque temple location; like something filmed for a Star Wars planet or something. Also, the can art for Mutant Temple is phenomenal to, here it is:

Here also, I want to bring up Strange Roots Experimental Ales. According to Untappd, they are a micro brewery out of Gibsonia Pennsylvania (near Pittsburgh). They have 394 unique beers with over 102K ratings, and a global average rating of 3.86. The Untappd description reads: “Strange Roots exists at the intersection of farmhouse brewing tradition and creative, locally-driven experimentation. We’re passionate about celebrating our environment through the use of local ingredients, varying fermentation methods and micro flora, and strive to create unique artisan ales inspired by our surroundings here in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains.”

Ok, now lets get back to the beer review.

(Skipping the appearance… sorry folks…. moving right along to aroma…) Coming out of the can you get a very citra hoppy aroma. Not surprising since this is a Citra dry hopped IPA. Citra has probably become the most used hop in America in the past two years, primarily for New England IPAs, and primarily because of that. Its a very juicy hop, and gives off a ton of lime, citrus, grapefruit, some peach, some mango, and tropical fruit notes. Both aromatically and in taste. Due to the proliferation of New England IPAs in the past two years, its market has exploded, usually used in conjunction with mosaic. (Cue up the Hallmark Christmas movies meme of Mosaic & Citra.) This is a strong IPA, but not as potent as most New England IPAs, and its definitely not a New England IPA, but it has a very strong citrus, lime, aroma; some notes of grapefruit and peach and mango.

Tasting this, (out of the can, not from a glass, just for perspective’s sake), this is definitely not a New England IPA; but a classic American / West Coast IPA. But its not full blown hop bitter West Coast IPA. Its nothing like Perpetual IPA, or Hop Slam, or something extremely high IBU or hop heavy. This is smoother, but not New England smooth, its not pure juice, but its still a juicer IPA than most West Coast styled ones. Theres a great deal of hop flavor , and some hop bitterness, but I think its smoothed because its dry hopped, especially with it being dry hopped with such a fruity hop like Citra. You get some earthy hop notes, a bit of pine, a wee bit of grassy-ness, to it, but overall the citra elements kick it into ultra drive on this, and you get a lot of the fruitier, more notable hop tastes from the citra; like lime, citrus, grapefruit, bit of peach, bit of mango, some tropical fruits, and the like, and this rounds it out and makes it a lot more tastier, seems to give it a lot more to the beer. I wouldn’t call it an extremely fruity or floral or juicy IPA or beer, but its got a lot of fruit forward flavors, its still definitely an IPA, there’s still the bite and the hop – ness to it, still some bitterness to it; still a “beer’s beer”. There is a nice body to it, and its got a good mouthfeel, it doesn’t feel too light or weak or watery. It’s also only 5.3% ABV, so thats really not bad, almost in the low regions by most beer standards nowadays. Most IPAs clock in the 6-7.5% range; and DIPAs then going from 7-9%. (Of course, then there’s also TIPAs and QIPAs even nowadays too.) I like the low ABV on this, especially for hiking, and despite picking it up at Breski’s as part of a mix-a-six, I could definitely dig this in a four pack and crush it. Would make for a great mowing beer, or working around the house, or shower beer, something where a nice beer would fit, but you don’t need or want to get hammered or pounded or anything. The Untappd description also lists it at only 5 IBU, but it does (still) have a hop bite and some bitterness. There’s no off flavors or after taste, nothing you’ll be burping up hours later, nothing off, or cloying, just a nice drinking beer. Great for hiking up a hill / mountain with your pooch!
