Just a little bit ago (at about 7:30 PM) Sobel’s Obscure Brewery out of Jeannette PA, has made the difficult decision — that they will be putting their brewery up for sale. They are currently located at 500 Clay Ave, Jeannette, PA 15644, and have listed their property and business as up for sale. The father and daughter duo have painstakingly agonized over the decision but made their announcement today (tonight).

Their Announcement

Sobel’s Obscure Brewery took to their social media to make the announcement, today – June 25th, 2026 – around 7 – 7:30 PM.

Their announcement:

oday, we’re sharing some bittersweet news with our community.

After 10 incredible years, our family has made the decision to officially place the brewery up for sale.

Ten years ago, this journey began with a passion for craft beer. What followed was a decade of growth, from brewing and distributing our beer, to a pop-up beer garden, and eventually opening the taproom four years ago.

This was never meant to be just about beer. It was about building a place where people could gather, support one another, and create lasting memories. Thanks to all of you, that’s exactly what it became.

From our S.O.B. Society mug club, to trivia nights, Concert & Food Truck Thursdays, and local musicians and food vendors who helped bring this space to life every weekend, we are endlessly grateful for this community.

Jeannette has been such an important part of our story. Watching the city continue to grow and revitalize has been incredible, and we’re proud to have played a small part in that journey.

While this has always been our family’s business, the decision to sell comes down to one thing: Dave is ready to retire after a lifetime of hard work. He has more than earned it.

We are NOT closing. We will remain open and operating throughout this process, and we don’t know what the timeline looks like.

We’ve chosen to offer the brewery as a complete turnkey business because we believe in what we’ve built and want to see it continue in Jeannette. Our hope is that someone carries it forward and keeps this space alive for the community.

To our incredible brewer and bartenders — thank you. You’ve become family, and none of this would exist without you.

To everyone who has stopped in, supported events, joined the mug club, laughed with us, or shared a beer—thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

And hey… if you know someone looking for a late-1800s department store turned brewery in downtown Jeannette, we’d love an introduction. We hope someone continues what we’ve built and carries it forward.

With heartfelt gratitude,Dave & Jackie

Sobel’s Obscure Brewery

Known for their Facebook and social media posts with the father and daughter who run the company (Dave and Jackie) with their dad jokes and great media posts, the brewery has had a faithful following over the years, even expanding to grow into the larger current venue that they own. As of right now there is no end – sight for the brewery, as they are looking to sell, and in the meantime stay open. Hopefully they are able to find a good, respectful buyer, but until that happens, the brewery will still be operating.

Scotland Fans Drink Boston Lager Dry During 2026 FIFA World Cup, Forcing Emergency Beer Deliveries https://thebeerthrillers.com/2026/06/19/scotland-fans-drink-boston-lager-dry-during-2026-fifa-world-cup-forcing-emergency-beer-deliveries/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=scotland-fans-drink-boston-lager-dry-during-2026-fifa-world-cup-forcing-emergency-beer-deliveries Sat, 20 Jun 2026 03:59:14 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=16898 Scotland Fans Drink Boston Lager Dry During 2026 FIFA World Cup, Forcing Emergency Beer Deliveries

If you ever needed proof that soccer fans know how to support a brewery, look no further than Boston this past weekend.

Thousands of supporters from Scotland’s legendary Tartan Army descended on Boston for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and in the process managed to accomplish something that few beer drinkers ever have—they temporarily drank the Samuel Adams Boston Taproom out of its flagship Boston Lager.

According to Boston Beer Company, demand for Boston Lager was so overwhelming that the brewery had to arrange an emergency beer delivery after sales reached roughly four times the volume of a typical holiday weekend, including busy stretches like the Fourth of July.

Scotland’s Tartan Army Creates a Beer Shortage in Boston

The Scottish national team’s first World Cup appearance in 28 years has brought an incredible wave of supporters across the Atlantic, and Boston has quickly become one of the tournament’s biggest party destinations.

From Thursday through Sunday, fans packed bars, pubs, restaurants, and the Samuel Adams Boston Taproom, creating one of the busiest weekends the brewery has ever experienced.

“We’ve never seen anything like it,” said Billy DeCain of the Sam Adams Boston Taproom during an interview with NBC Boston.

Rather than sampling the brewery’s extensive draft lineup—which features around twenty beers, including numerous taproom-exclusive releases—most visitors overwhelmingly chose one beer:

Samuel Adams Boston Lager.

Boston Beer Company said it has already increased beer deliveries throughout the week to ensure the taproom remains stocked for the remainder of Scotland’s stay.

It’s Not Just Samuel Adams Feeling the Demand

The surge wasn’t limited to one brewery.

Boston-area bars also reported record-breaking beer sales as Scotland supporters packed nearly every establishment within walking distance of the city’s major attractions.

At The White Bull Tavern, staff reported running through nearly everything they had available.

“Pretty much everything. We ran out of everything,” said Paul Morris of the tavern. “Tennent’s being number one.”

Scottish supporter Dave Orr joked that when one pub finally ran dry, the only remaining option was Bud Light after the Scottish fans had emptied the taps.

Meanwhile, Hennessy’s Bar experienced what may have been one of the biggest weekends in its history.

Chief Operating Officer Noelle Somers told the Boston Globe that beer sales actually tripled what the bar typically sees on St. Patrick’s Day—a remarkable benchmark considering Boston’s reputation for celebrating the Irish holiday.

“We’ve been here for over 30 years, and we’ve never seen anything like it,” Somers said.

Scotland’s Victory Keeps the Celebration Going

The celebrations only intensified after Scotland earned a 1-0 victory over Haiti at Gillette Stadium on Saturday evening.

Fans flooded back into downtown Boston after the match, filling bars well into the early morning hours before turning their attention to another uniquely Boston tradition.

Less than 24 hours later, thousands attended Scotland Day at Fenway Park, where the Boston Red Sox welcomed international visitors with a celebration of Scottish culture.

The festivities included a fan march led by bagpipe players from Evans Way Park to Fenway, with estimates suggesting at least 5,000 supporters participated before thousands more entered the ballpark for the Red Sox matchup against the Texas Rangers.

Why This Matters for Craft Beer

Large sporting events have long been a boost for local breweries, but the 2026 FIFA World Cup is demonstrating just how significant that impact can be.

While many breweries prepare for concerts, holiday weekends, or playoff games, international soccer tournaments bring thousands of thirsty visitors into a city over several consecutive days. For breweries, taprooms, and neighborhood pubs, that can translate into record-breaking draft sales, increased tourism, and valuable exposure to drinkers from around the world.

For Samuel Adams, the unexpected popularity of Boston Lager serves as a reminder that sometimes the classic flagship beer is exactly what visitors want. Despite having an extensive draft list filled with seasonal and taproom-exclusive offerings, Scotland supporters overwhelmingly chose the beer that helped define Boston’s craft beer scene decades ago.

With Scotland scheduled to return to Gillette Stadium later this week to face Morocco, Boston Beer Company has already increased deliveries in anticipation of another wave of thirsty supporters.

If last weekend is any indication, Boston Lager may once again become one of the hottest pours in the city.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Samuel Adams really run out of Boston Lager?

Yes. Boston Beer Company confirmed that the Samuel Adams Boston Taproom temporarily ran out of Boston Lager after Scotland supporters purchased roughly four times the beer the brewery normally sells during a comparable four-day holiday weekend.

Why were there so many Scottish fans in Boston?

Scotland qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking the nation’s first appearance in the tournament in 28 years. Thousands of members of the famous Tartan Army traveled to Boston to support the national team.

Did other Boston bars experience record sales?

Yes. Several Boston-area pubs reported unprecedented demand. Hennessy’s Bar said sales exceeded even St. Patrick’s Day, while other establishments reported running out of multiple beer brands due to the influx of fans.

What does this mean for local breweries?

Major international sporting events like the FIFA World Cup can significantly increase taproom traffic, draft beer sales, tourism, and brand exposure for breweries located in host cities, making them some of the most impactful events for the hospitality and craft beer industries.

World Cup Kickoff Meets Craft Beer Culture https://thebeerthrillers.com/2026/06/11/world-cup-kickoff-meets-craft-beer-culture/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=world-cup-kickoff-meets-craft-beer-culture Thu, 11 Jun 2026 14:06:24 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=16907 World Cup Kickoff Meets Craft Beer Culture

World Cup and Beer – Breweries Bring People Together

June 11 marks the kickoff of the World Cup, one of the most globally unifying sporting events on the planet. Every four years, time zones blur, sleep schedules get wrecked, and entire nations rally behind ninety minutes of hope and heartbreak. But for craft beer fans—especially here in Pennsylvania—it’s also a perfect excuse to turn matches into full-on tasting events.

The World Cup isn’t just about soccer. It’s about culture. And few things represent culture more tangibly than beer.

A Global Tournament, A Global Tap List

One of the most fun ways to celebrate the World Cup is by drinking along with the teams. Each match becomes an opportunity to explore a country’s brewing traditions—or at least a craft interpretation of them.

  • Watching Germany? Reach for a crisp helles lager or a hefeweizen from a local brewery putting their spin on Bavarian classics.

  • Rooting for Belgium? Time to crack open a dubbel, tripel, or a Belgian-style golden ale—bonus points if it’s deceptively strong.

  • England match on? A malt-forward ESB or a smooth pub ale fits the bill.

  • Supporting Mexico? A light lager works, but craft versions with lime or salt twists elevate the experience.

Pennsylvania breweries have leaned heavily into global styles over the years, so there’s a good chance you can build a “World Cup flight” without leaving the state.

Pennsylvania Breweries Join the Party

Local breweries are no strangers to big-event energy, and the World Cup provides a built-in theme for taproom engagement. Expect to see:

  • Early opening hours for morning matches

  • International-themed tap takeovers or rotating drafts

  • Soccer watch parties with projector screens and packed patios

  • Limited releases tied to participating countries or teams

Some breweries even organize bracket-style competitions—not just for the games, but for beers. Think “IPA vs. Lager” showdowns running parallel to knockout rounds.

For beer bloggers and content creators, this is prime time. A simple “match + beer pairing” series can drive engagement, especially if you’re highlighting local breweries alongside international styles.

Beer Pairings by Match Intensity

Not all games are created equal, and your beer choice can match the energy:

  • Early Group Stage Matches: Easy-drinking lagers, kölsches, or session IPAs. You’re pacing yourself.

  • Rivalry Games: Go bold—double IPAs, imperial stouts, or barrel-aged offerings.

  • Knockout Rounds: Something special. A rare bottle, a vertical tasting, or a brewery-exclusive release.

  • The Final: Champagne of beers? Maybe. But a well-crafted saison or a celebratory wild ale feels more on brand.

The Social Side of Soccer and Beer

At its core, both soccer and craft beer thrive on community. Whether you’re packed into a brewery in Harrisburg, watching from a quiet taproom near Jersey Shore, or hosting friends at home, the shared experience is what makes it memorable.

There’s something uniquely satisfying about hearing a room erupt after a goal while holding a pint that was brewed just miles away. It grounds a global event in something local and tangible.

Final Whistle Thoughts

The World Cup only comes around every four years, but the creativity of craft beer is constant. Bringing the two together turns every match into more than just a game—it becomes an experience.

So as the tournament kicks off on June 11, consider planning your own beer lineup alongside the match schedule. Explore new styles, support local breweries, and maybe even discover a new favorite along the way.

Because in the end, whether your team lifts the trophy or crashes out early, at least your beer game can still be world class.

Inspiration Brewing Company is Coming to Elizabethtown https://thebeerthrillers.com/2026/06/09/inspiration-brewing-company-is-coming-to-elizabethtown/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=inspiration-brewing-company-is-coming-to-elizabethtown Tue, 09 Jun 2026 21:21:24 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=16881 Inspiration Brewing Company is Coming to Elizabethtown

Looks like things are going to get Funky in Elizabethtown again…. This time with a bit of Inspiration. No, Funk Brewing is not coming back to their old location. But – Inspiration Brewing Company – headed by Brian Mills, is coming to the old Funk Brewing taproom spot. Located at 28 S Market St, Elizabethtown, PA 17022 – which is the main way through Elizabethtown, the location was originally the Funk Brewing Taproom and then became the Pine Creek Spirits location until they also left leaving the space vacant until now.

First hints popped up with Inspiration Brewing announcing that they had some “Funky News” with the backdrop being an image (slightly blurred) of the Funk taproom.

Inspiration Brewing Company Expanding to Elizabethtown, PA

The original brewery – the old Pour Man’s Brewing spot – in Ephrata isn’t going anywhere and will still be open. (You can read about our attending the soft opening at Inspiration Brewing Company.) This will be their second location. The current spot in Ephrata is located at 284 S Reading Rd. Ephrata, PA 17522. (You can see a map showing travel from Inspiration Brewing’s main location in Ephrata to their new taproom in Elizabethtown here: Inspiration to Inspiration.)

A few days ago Inspiration Brewing posted the vague news post:

“Funky News Coming Soon! Inspiration Brewing” with the backdrop being the Funk Brewery’s taproom building blurred.

We’re just going to leave this right here for you.

They have now revealed the information, that they are taking over the original Elizabethtown Funk Brewing’s Taproom. Their announcement June 4th:

Welcome! Follow along as we work to open our new location in Elizabethtown.

– Inspiration Brewing Elizabethtown Brewpub – Facebook Post (June 4th)

On their original and main Facebook page, they also posted this on June 4th:

Well, @followers, we have some news. We are getting ready to open our second location! We will be working hard over the next few months to get the doors open. In the meantime, you can follow the page for the new Elizabethtown location here: https://www.facebook.com/ibcetownpub
As for our original taproom, that isn’t going anywhere. We love that location, but also wanted to bring our vision of a full food menu to life. The second location will give us that ability. We hope that you follow along on this journey and look forward to it as much as we are.

A Brewed Up Building

The 28 S Market Street building has seen some beer in it’s day. It was the Funk Brewing Company’s Taproom for a while, even sustaining a fire in 2022. (Funk Brewing Taproom on Fire) (Funk Brewery Fire Update) Then in February of 2024 Funk Brewing shuttered it as their taproom and it became the Pine Creek Spirits.  Pine Creek Spirits stayed on in the building until they too closed their doors in June of 2025. It has since stayed vacant. (Nearly one full year until Inspiration Brewing Company’s announcement.)

Inspiration Brewing had their grand opening in Ephrata, in March of 2025. (Grand Opening of Inspiration Brewing Company) They took over the original spot of Pour Man’s Brewing who had moved to downtown Ephrata. Pour Man’s had just previously acquired St. Boniface Brewing expanding their brewing capacity, and needed much bigger space and a much bigger restaurant than the current (and now Inspiration) location.

What Is Cold IPA? The Complete Guide to Craft Beer’s Most Confusing Style

What Is a Cold IPA?

A Cold IPA is a modern beer style that combines the hop-forward character of a West Coast IPA with the crisp, clean drinkability of a lager.

Unlike traditional India Pale Ales, Cold IPAs are typically fermented with lager yeast or a very clean ale yeast and often include adjunct grains such as rice or corn. The result is a beer that showcases hop aroma and bitterness while remaining lighter-bodied and exceptionally crisp.

In simple terms:

A Cold IPA drinks like a lager but tastes like an IPA.

This relatively new beer style has quickly become one of the most discussed innovations in the craft beer industry.

Quick Answer

If you’re looking for the short answer:

  • Cold IPA is a hop-forward beer style.
  • It uses lager-like fermentation techniques.
  • It is drier and crisper than most IPAs.
  • It is more bitter than a Hazy IPA.
  • It is designed to highlight hop character without excessive malt sweetness.

Who Invented the Cold IPA?

The style is widely credited to brewer Kevin Davey of Wayfinder Beer in Portland, Oregon.

Davey developed the concept as a way to create a beer that showcased modern hop varieties while maintaining the crisp finish of a lager. The style quickly spread throughout the craft beer industry and can now be found in breweries across the United States.

What Makes a Cold IPA Different?

Many beer drinkers confuse Cold IPA with other popular IPA styles.

Cold IPA vs West Coast IPA

While both styles emphasize hop bitterness and aroma, Cold IPAs generally:

  • Finish drier
  • Have less malt character
  • Feature a lighter body
  • Often use lager fermentation methods

Cold IPA vs Hazy IPA

Hazy IPAs focus on:

  • Juicy fruit flavors
  • Soft mouthfeel
  • Low bitterness
  • Oat-heavy grain bills

Cold IPAs focus on:

  • Crisp drinkability
  • Higher bitterness
  • Cleaner fermentation
  • Sharper hop expression

Cold IPA vs IPL (India Pale Lager)

This comparison causes the most confusion.

While the two styles are similar, many brewers view Cold IPA as a distinct category because it was intentionally designed with specific brewing techniques and flavor goals rather than simply being an IPA brewed with lager yeast.

What Does a Cold IPA Taste Like?

Most Cold IPAs showcase flavors and aromas such as:

  • Citrus
  • Pine
  • Tropical fruit
  • White grape
  • Berry
  • Resinous hop character

The finish is often:

  • Crisp
  • Dry
  • Refreshing
  • Clean

Many drinkers describe Cold IPA as being more refreshing than a traditional IPA while still delivering plenty of hop intensity.

Why Are Brewers Making Cold IPAs?

Craft brewers are constantly searching for ways to innovate while maintaining drinkability.

Cold IPA allows breweries to:

  • Showcase modern hop varieties
  • Create highly drinkable beers
  • Appeal to both IPA and lager drinkers
  • Differentiate themselves in crowded taproom lineups

The style has become especially popular during warmer months when consumers often seek lighter-bodied beers without sacrificing flavor.

Best Cold IPA Examples

While availability varies by region, some highly regarded examples include:

  • Relapse Cold IPA by Wayfinder Beer
  • Various seasonal Cold IPAs from regional craft breweries
  • Limited releases from innovative lager-focused breweries

Because the style remains relatively young, new interpretations continue to emerge every year.

Should You Try a Cold IPA?

If you enjoy:

  • West Coast IPAs
  • Pilsners
  • India Pale Lagers
  • Crisp, hop-forward beers

Then a Cold IPA is absolutely worth trying.

It offers many of the hop characteristics IPA fans love while delivering a cleaner and more refreshing drinking experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Cold IPA served colder?

No. The name does not refer to serving temperature.

The term “Cold IPA” refers to the brewing process and fermentation approach used to create the style.

Is a Cold IPA a lager?

Not exactly.

Many Cold IPAs use lager yeast or lager-inspired techniques, but they are generally considered a separate style.

Are Cold IPAs bitter?

Yes. Most Cold IPAs feature moderate to high bitterness, especially compared to Hazy IPAs.

What alcohol percentage is a Cold IPA?

Most Cold IPAs range between 6% and 7.5% ABV, although examples outside that range exist.

Final Thoughts

The Cold IPA may have started as an experiment, but it has quickly become one of the most influential new styles in craft beer.

By combining the crisp refreshment of a lager with the hop intensity of an IPA, breweries have created a beer that appeals to a wide range of drinkers. Whether you’re a dedicated hophead or a lager enthusiast looking to explore something new, Cold IPA offers a unique bridge between two of craft beer’s most beloved categories.

As breweries continue refining and expanding the style, don’t be surprised if Cold IPA becomes a permanent fixture in taprooms across the country.

Schlitz Discontinued: The End of a Beer That Once Ruled America https://thebeerthrillers.com/2026/05/19/schlitz-discontinued-the-end-of-a-beer-that-once-ruled-america/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=schlitz-discontinued-the-end-of-a-beer-that-once-ruled-america Wed, 20 May 2026 02:08:23 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=16910 Schlitz Discontinued: The End of a Beer That Once Ruled America

For a beer that once proudly claimed “the beer that made Milwaukee famous,” the idea of Schlitz disappearing feels almost surreal. Yet with news of its discontinuation, one of America’s most iconic brewing names quietly exits the stage—less with a bang and more with a nostalgic sigh. (source: WGN – Schlitz Beer Discontinued after 177 Years)

Schlitz Beer Discontinued After 177 Years

A Giant of Its Time

Schlitz wasn’t just another macro lager. At its peak in the mid-20th century, it was the American beer. By the 1950s and 60s, Schlitz had climbed to the top of the U.S. beer market, thanks to aggressive marketing, wide distribution, and a reputation for consistency.

For many drinkers, it was the default—what you grabbed at a ballgame, a backyard cookout, or after a long shift. It represented a kind of blue-collar reliability that defined American beer before the craft revolution rewrote the script.

The Long Decline

The fall of Schlitz has been studied almost as much as its rise. A series of cost-cutting decisions in the 1970s—most notably changes to brewing processes intended to speed up production—damaged the beer’s flavor and reputation. Loyal drinkers noticed, and they didn’t forgive easily.

Add in increased competition from Budweiser, Miller, and Coors, and Schlitz quickly lost ground. By the 1980s, it had fallen from the top spot to an afterthought, eventually being sold off and folded into larger brewing portfolios.

A Brand That Never Quite Came Back

Over the years, Schlitz made attempts at revival. Retro branding, “original formula” releases, and nostalgia-driven marketing campaigns all tried to tap into its former glory. For a while, it even found a niche among craft-curious drinkers interested in “heritage” lagers.

But in an era dominated by hazy IPAs, pastry stouts, and hyper-local brewery taprooms, Schlitz struggled to find a lasting identity. It was too old-school for trend-driven craft drinkers, yet no longer dominant enough to compete with modern macro giants.

Why This Matters

Schlitz disappearing isn’t just about one beer—it’s a reflection of how dramatically the beer landscape has changed.

  • Drinkers now prioritize flavor diversity and local identity over national dominance.

  • Craft breweries have reshaped expectations around freshness, experimentation, and storytelling.

  • Legacy brands without strong differentiation are increasingly squeezed out.

In a way, Schlitz becomes a cautionary tale. Brewing shortcuts, loss of quality, and failure to adapt can erase even the biggest names.

A Toast to History

For craft beer enthusiasts, Schlitz may not have been a go-to pour. But its place in brewing history is undeniable. It helped define what American beer looked like for decades—and its rise and fall paved the way for the diversity we enjoy today.

If anything, its disappearance is a reminder: today’s giants are never guaranteed tomorrow.

So whether you ever cracked one open or just recognize the name from vintage signs and bar memorabilia, Schlitz deserves at least a final nod.

Raise a glass—preferably something local—and toast to the beer that once made Milwaukee famous.

Beer Review: Rye Torpedo (Sierra Nevada) https://thebeerthrillers.com/2026/05/13/beer-review-rye-torpedo-sierra-nevada/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=beer-review-rye-torpedo-sierra-nevada Wed, 13 May 2026 20:59:36 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=16863 Beer Review: Rye Torpedo (Sierra Nevada)

There’s a satisfying little rebellion in drinking a rye-forward brew from a namesake West Coast IPA house: it feels like Sierra Nevada nudging tradition and saying, “Let’s spice things up.” Rye Torpedo is that nudge — a confident, approachable IPA that leans on an assertive rye backbone and classic piney-hop character to deliver something familiar with a wink. It’s not a revolution, but it’s a deliberate, well-executed spin that rewards repeated sips.

Rye Torpedo by Sierra Nevada

Appearance: Poured into a tulip, Rye Torpedo shows a clear amber-gold hue with a faint copper tint and a steady, off-white head that leaves a tidy lace as you work through the glass. The carbonation sits lively but not aggressive; at rest it presents the kind of clarity and color that says this beer knows its job and plans to do it without fuss.

Aroma: Upfront, the nose is a textbook Sierra Nevada blend of citrus rind, resinous pine, and floral hop perfume — think grapefruit peel, orange blossom, and fresh-cut spruce. Beneath that, the rye steps in with a subtle spiciness and a whisper of black pepper and dry biscuit that keeps the aroma from falling into one-note hop territory. There’s also a soft, bready malt sweetness that grounds the hops without weighing them down. It’s inviting and balanced: aromatic enough to promise a hop-forward ride but tempered by cereal warmth and rye tang.

Taste: First sip delivers the expected punch of citrus and resin, but the rye is the star of the mid-palate. It brings a peppery, slightly nutty snap that complements rather than competes with the hop bitterness. The bitterness is firm — assertive, but clean — and it plays nicely off a modest caramel malt base that gives the beer some chew and body. Hop flavors range from grapefruit and tangerine to a sapmy, piney undercurrent; they’re classic West Coast but tuned so the rye can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with them. The beer never feels overly sticky or sugary — instead, it’s brisk, with the rye adding a dry, spicy dimension that keeps each sip lively.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied with a crisp, dry finish, Rye Torpedo offers a pleasant contrast between weight and snap. There’s enough malt to give it substance, but the carbonation and rye’s dryness push it toward a finish that cleans the palate rather than clinging to it. That crispness is one reason the beer drinks easier than the hops’ aromatics might lead you to expect; you can comfortably have two without feeling overwhelmed.

Balance and complexity: Where Rye Torpedo earns its four stars is in the way it balances familiarity with a little adventurousness. Sierra Nevada doesn’t try to complicate the beer with exotic adjuncts or gimmicks — it pares the recipe down to a solid malt bill, a healthy dose of rye, and a hop program that leans classic. That combination produces more nuance than a straight IPA: you get peppery spice, piney resin, citrus tang, and just enough malt sweetness to keep things grounded. It’s not a hyper-complex craft IPA in the avant-garde sense, but it’s thoughtfully assembled and nuanced enough to reward repeated drinking and discussion.

Drinkability and food pairing: With its medium body and dry finish, Rye Torpedo is highly drinkable; it pairs especially well with spiced dishes and smoky proteins. Think pepper-crusted steak, grilled sausages with mustard, or a smoked gouda sandwich — the rye and hop bitterness will stand up to bold flavors without getting lost. For lighter fare, it also complements sharper cheeses and bright salads with citrus-forward dressings. In short, it’s versatile at the table and dependable in the hand.

Packaging and presentation: Brewed by a stalwart of American craft brewing, Rye Torpedo wears the Sierra Nevada badge with quiet confidence. Whether from a can or on draft, it pours true to style and carries a familiar label of quality — no theatrical packaging required. That steady presentation is part of the appeal: this is a brewery that knows how to execute a concept without needing to shout about it.

Who it’s for: If you like West Coast-style IPAs but are curious about something with a spicy twist, Rye Torpedo is a natural fit. It’s friendly enough for hop lovers who prefer balance over pure bitterness, and it has enough character to please drinkers who enjoy rye-forward beers or those looking for a little more texture than a straightforward pale. It’s also a good middle ground for folks who enjoy traditional Sierra Nevada offerings but want something with a touch more grit.

What could be better: The beer’s restraint is mostly a virtue, but it’s also the reason Rye Torpedo doesn’t earn a perfect score. For hop die-hards chasing maximalism or brewers pushing the envelope of acidity, haze, or experimental adjuncts, this will read as conservative — deliberately so. A slightly more adventurous hop profile or a bolder rye presence might tip this from “very good” to “unforgettable” for some palates. That said, the decision to keep it measured preserves broad appeal and drinkability.

Final thoughts: Rye Torpedo is a smart, well-balanced IPA that blends classic West Coast hop character with a spicy rye core for extra personality. It’s not a radical departure from what you expect from Sierra Nevada, but it’s a welcome variant — thoughtful, tasty, and thoroughly drinkable. For those reasons, it earns a solid four out of five stars: a reliable, characterful brew that hits the sweet spot between approachability and distinctiveness.

My Untappd Rating: **** out of 5
Global Untappd Rating: 3.85 out of 5 (as of 5.10.26)

Beer Review: Tröegs Pennsylvania Lager (Troegs Independent Brewing) https://thebeerthrillers.com/2026/04/25/beer-review-troegs-pennsylvania-lager-troegs-independent-brewing/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=beer-review-troegs-pennsylvania-lager-troegs-independent-brewing Sat, 25 Apr 2026 04:26:18 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=16905 Beer Review: Tröegs Pennsylvania Lager (Troegs Independent Brewing)

Pennsylvania craft beer has always had a strong relationship with lagers, and Tröegs Pennsylvania Lager fits right into that tradition. It’s a beer that doesn’t try to force the issue or show off too hard; instead, it focuses on being clean, balanced, and easy to enjoy. That approach works especially well here, because this is the kind of beer that can quietly become a regular go-to.

First Impressions

The beer pours with a bright, classic lager appearance that immediately suggests refreshment. It looks crisp in the glass, and that first visual impression lines up nicely with what the beer delivers once you take a sip. There’s a straightforward charm to it that makes it feel familiar in the best possible way.

Aroma

The nose is subtle but inviting, with grainy malt notes leading the way. There’s a clean, fresh quality to the aroma that keeps the beer from feeling too soft or too neutral. It gives you the sense that this is a carefully made lager, one that values precision and drinkability.

Flavor and Mouthfeel

The flavor profile is smooth and well-composed, centered around a solid malt backbone with a crisp finish. It doesn’t overload the palate, and that restraint is part of what makes it work so well. The body lands in a comfortable middle ground, giving the beer enough presence to feel satisfying without becoming heavy.

The mouthfeel is especially important here because it reinforces the beer’s overall sense of balance. Each sip feels clean and steady, which makes it easy to keep reaching for the glass. That kind of drinkability is often what separates a good lager from a forgettable one.

Overall Impression

Tröegs Pennsylvania Lager succeeds because it understands what it wants to be. It’s not trying to reinvent the wheel, and it doesn’t need to. Instead, it offers a polished, reliable lager experience with enough character to keep it interesting and enough restraint to make it highly drinkable.

For fans of well-made Pennsylvania beer, this one is worth checking out. It’s the kind of release that feels equally at home on a casual weeknight or alongside a good meal, and that versatility makes it an easy recommendation.

Rating: 4.25 out of 5 pints

Beer Review: 24/7 Hazy Session IPA (New Trail Brewing Company) https://thebeerthrillers.com/2026/04/03/beer-review-24-7-hazy-session-ipa-new-trail-brewing-company/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=beer-review-24-7-hazy-session-ipa-new-trail-brewing-company Fri, 03 Apr 2026 20:54:19 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=16859 Beer Review: 24/7 Hazy Session IPA (New Trail Brewing Company)

New Trail drops a sessionable West Coast–inspired IPA that’s built for all-day adventures.

New Trail’s newest Session IPA – 24/7

A beautiful spring day in Dauphin County, the kind where you’re thinking about hitting the Susquehanna or just firing up the grill. I grabbed a 4-pack of New Trail’s latest — 24/7 Session — and figured it was time to see what the Williamsport crew cooked up this time. New Trail has been crushing it with hazies for years (Broken Heels fans know what’s up), but this one takes a different trail: a crisp, hop-forward session IPA with West Coast vibes. Let’s pop the can.

24/7 Hazy Session IPA by New Trail Brewing Co.

Beer: 24/7 Session Brewery: New Trail Brewing Co. (Williamsport, PA) Style: Session IPA (West Coast–inspired) ABV: 4.7% IBU: Not listed, but it carries a solid bite

Appearance: Pours a bright, clear golden hue with a tight white head that settles nicely. Good bubbles rising, and it leaves some solid lacing on the glass. Looks clean and inviting — exactly what you want when you’re planning on having a few without tapping out early.

Aroma: Big hop forward right away. Pine, citrus zest, and a touch of resin with some floral notes dancing around. Centennial, Amarillo, and Simcoe are doing the heavy lifting here, giving it that classic West Coast hop character without going overboard. It’s fresh and bright — makes you think of cracking it open on a hike or by the river.

Taste & Mouthfeel: First sip hits with a nice malt backbone that’s light but supportive — just enough sweetness to balance things out before the hops roll in. You get that firm, clean bitterness with grapefruit, pine, and herbal edges. It’s crisp, dry, and refreshing with a snappy finish that keeps you coming back. Mouthfeel is light-to-medium, highly carbonated, and super drinkable at 4.7%. No heaviness, no cloying sweetness, just pure sessionability. This is the beer you can drink from lunch through sunset and still feel human.

It’s got that “I could do this 24/7” energy without the next-morning regret. In a sea of super juicy hazies, this one stands out by going back to basics while still delivering big flavor.

Overall: New Trail continues to show why they’re one of the most reliable breweries in Pennsylvania. While everyone else is chasing the next pastry stout or milkshake IPA, they quietly drop a well-balanced session beer that actually tastes like it belongs in a cooler on the trail. It’s approachable for newer drinkers but hoppy enough to keep the nerds happy. Perfect for Central PA summers (or those rare warm Lancaster spring days).

My Untappd Rating: 4.0 — A crusher that’ll be in regular rotation.

The 2026 Battle of the Breweries: DANA Conference – Round of 9 https://thebeerthrillers.com/2026/03/30/the-2026-battle-of-the-breweries-dana-conference-round-of-9/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-2026-battle-of-the-breweries-dana-conference-round-of-9 Mon, 30 Mar 2026 15:28:45 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=16834 The 2026 Battle of the Breweries: DANA Conference – Round of 9

Well…. this is now officially the third round of the tournament. The Round of 8 (or Round of 9 for the DANA Conference). Thanks to some (MORE) errors with the WordPress site, this week’s contest is a full week behind. My apologies for that. But I think we’ve gotten it all straightened out.

We are one round further along though, and its the Round of 8 for each Conference. Though for the DANA Conference, its the Round of 9 due to a tie, so the one match up is another triple threat.

In the Honorees vs. 1. vs. 17 round, we had a tie with the top two out of the triple threat. So both Straub Brewery and Selin’s Grove Brewing moved on.

The 2026 Battle of the Breweries – DANA Conference: Round of 9

2026 Battle of the Breweries: DANA Conference - Round of 9
The 2026 Battle of the Breweries - Round of 9: DANA Conference

(Due to a tie, this is again a triple threat.) Honoree: Straub Brewery vs. 17) Selin's Grove Brewing vs. 9) Wolf Brewing

11) Pizza Boy Brewing vs. 3) Human Robot

23) Troegs Independent Craft Brewing vs. 15) Hemauer Brewing

12) Pour Man's Brewing vs. 29) Conshohocken Brewing Company

Tournament Guidelines

We fully encourage everyone to have as much fun as possible with this tournament! Share and comment and talk about the breweries facing off. Upset your favorite brewery isn’t in the tournament? Sorry! It means one of us probably haven’t been there, or they just barely missed our cut when deciding the 256 breweries to include! Social media is a fantastic tool for sharing your brewery or your favorite brewery’s voting page. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, BlueSky, Mastodon, Tumblr, LinkTree, umm…. MySpace? LinkedIn? Pinterest? What other social medias do you cool young kids use? Whichever it is, feel free to share and bolster and brag about how your brewery is doing or encourage others to vote for your favorite brewery!

Please do keep it all in fun though. This isn’t meant to belittle or demean breweries or to create real animosity. Its a fun light hearted competition in the spirit of the NCAA March Madness basketball tournament. So with that in mind please enjoy it!

Good Luck

Once again – good luck to all the breweries involved, and have fun! Be sure to share this page or the direct voting pages for best results.

Cheers!
