A collage of some of our recent Patio Beers (as seen on our Instagram page)

There is Something About Those Back Patio Beers

There is something about those out back patio beers.  Wait, it’s too damn hot out today for that.  We will be having this evening’s beer inside!

Henry Hill laughing in the Goodfellas

While I was pregnant with our daughter, Scarlet, Ben took his first crack at hardscaping a patio area off the back porch.  I’ll spare you the details, but it was a long daunting process that quickly got out of hand.  I mean, nothing goes as simply as you hope but, when it involves a large hole in the ground and 10 feet on concrete it gets crazy.  No, this isn’t the start of a mob movie!

You can understand when Ben finally finished the original plans for the patio, we were very grateful.  Even on humid evenings we have been grabbing some patio time with a beer since early in the year.  The little spot that was created to find peace and relaxation needs a beer to go with it.

(As always – you can check out our Instagram to see all of our beer pics, adventures, behind the scenes photos and videos, reels, memes, and links to some of our other articles and maps, hike pictures, board game pictures, and all kinds of things.)

The latest brews we have enjoyed together are Idiom Brewing out of the Blue on July 1, Heavy Seas Hazy Cannon and Tropicannon on July 1 , Idiom Brewing Emotional Rollercoaster July 4th, Last Thursday 11th Schnitz Ale Brewery Boozendorf ale.

Each time it feels like a major relief to relax outside with a well-crafted beer and finish out the day.  Especially being able to chat and vent about a stressful day with a friend or the love of your life.  The patio beer also counts if you are alone though. This is the beer that when you finish you feel refreshed.  Given the time of year patio beers are normally fruity or light.

No matter where you live or frequently hang out, grab yourself a “patio beer”, preferably from a local craft brewery and relax!

This wasn’t our patio but we did have beers in a “patio” at Boneshire this past Friday (The Beer Thrillers at Boneshire Brew Works – Instagram).

Ben had the AuZealand and I had the Flying Hawaiian.  And yes, we had these in the parking lot picnic table area.  It still counts as part of the patio beer discussion.  This isn’t like Cheers but each brewery we tend to write about should make you feel like you belong.  Like it’s your 3rd home.

We also enjoyed a patio beer at YAH Brew Kolsch for CJ June 30th  (Benefit for CJ) (The Beer Thrillers at YAH Brew – Instagram). It’s a small patio outside of Yah Brew but it continues that vibe of feeling welcome at the neighborhood watering hole.

Some of our other fav patio spots to have a beer: Sworn Brewing, Cold Spring Brewing Company , Wolf Brewing, Boneshire Brew Works, Ever Grain Brewing’s open patio area, Troegs Brewery’s patio and beer garden; and honestly there’s so many more – too many to even begin to list really! But here is some pictures from the different places.

Amy Out

Thank you for reading down our bit of memory lane and viewing some of our patio beer pics. Ben wants to do even more with the patio in the future, including building a paver based bar, as well as an outdoor brick oven (a pizza oven). He also wants to set a block up of cement to take the handprints of the girls as well as our dog Leela.

Thank you for joining us today, and make sure to join us on our Instagram page, please follow us on there, we are hoping to hit 1K followers by the end of summer!

YAH Brew and Desserts Pairing https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/12/13/yah-brew-and-desserts-pairing/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=yah-brew-and-desserts-pairing Thu, 14 Dec 2023 01:40:40 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=13268 Cupcake and Beer

A dessert pairing with a fresh beer, it feels like my Christmas present already arrived.  Ben and I decided a quick date night was in order.  As soon, as you walk in the door you feel like the 90s theme of YAH Brew was successfully switched over to a 90s theme Christmas Brewery. They completed the transition with a Gingerbread stout by YAH Brew and paired it with a Gingerbread cupcake from Desserts Etc.

The Gingerbread stout, Santa’s Bake, is described on Facebook as “a Gingerbread stout with Flavors or gingerbread, spices, vanilla and cream cheese frosting”. The Gingerbread Stout starts off with a light gingerbread flavor, the thickness of the stout comes in and then it feels like you dive into one last kick of gingerbread so you don’t forget it.

Santa’s Bake comes in on Untapped with a 6% ABV and it has an overall rating of 4.08.

The sweet cream cheese frosting, soft gingerbread cookie and soft gingerbread flavor cupcake are the perfect complement to this thick milk stout.  I knew right away Grandma SueAnn would love this stout.  I hope you remember me explaining we weren’t just pumpkin spice loving gals, we love all the seasonal flavors! I made sure to take a Crowler home to Grandma SueAnn.

While at YAH Brew enjoying this paring with my Boo, we had to also have something a little savory.  We tried out the Nachos and added the smoked pork.  This was an incredibly good choice to balance out the sweetness from the stout and cupcake.  The beer cheese in the nachos or maybe it was the pico de gallo had just a touch of spice that was the perfect balance.

Nachos and Imprint’s Dream Bars

We also split the Bourbon Barrel Aged 5ifth Anniversary Dream bars by Imprint Beer Co.  This pastry stout was like a dream.  It went along well with all the other tasty selections we were enjoying.

Then, to finish off Ben ordered the Gushee: Creepy Crawler.  I thought all my food/drink aversions where over after my pregnancy.  But just the thought of this one makes me gag.  Seriously, as I am writing this my visceral reaction is to vomit.  It was greatly upsetting as I was still polishing off those nachos when the drink arrived.  I was never the type of girl to be like that.  Your girl knew how to take a shot down the hatch.

YAH Brew’s crowler.

We noticed the crowler label as I watched Ben finish off the Gushee; adoptable pets from the Humane Society.  Any business that supports a non profit will always have my business.  Not only do I get to bop my head to tunes that remind me of being a teenager, but I feel good when it helps supports my community.  YAH Brew might be one of our fav breweries, especially for a date night.

Happy Father’s Day https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/06/18/happy-fathers-day/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=happy-fathers-day Mon, 19 Jun 2023 01:21:46 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=11721
Happy Father’s Day Everyone!

Happy Father’s Day

I hope everyone gets to spend some quality time with their father or a father figure in their life.  I happened to find a good one for my daughter.  Ben loves to be able to be the one to tuck Scarlet into bed each night and tell her how much he loves her.

I grew up with a dad that worked hard to provide for the family and made sure to tell me I was loved.  He taught me how to ride a bike and how to drive a car.  Most importantly he taught me not to take crap from anyone.  He spent endless hours teaching me how to pitch in softball and practice soccer.  It’s a shame that man doesn’t exist anymore.

Ben wasn’t quite ready for the picture, but still. Happy Father’s Day from the Full Pint and the Half Pint

Breakfast Brunch

When I thought of what I wanted to do for Ben, besides a present, I immediately thought we’d take him out for breakfast.  It’s our favorite meal to eat out.  My very first thought was it must be Sunday Brunch at YAH Brew.

Before even getting there, I knew we’d order the Breakfast Tots.  I’ve been dreaming of them since last visit (It Was All a Dream – Our Visit to YAH Brew)  but I still wanted to try something else.  Bacon breakfast tacos were a solid choice.  Neither one of these disappointed us and we enjoyed every morsel.

Country Club Brewing’s “The Easton Assassin” and YAH Brew’s “Pup Pup Pass” (…and Scarlet’s Formula)

Both of these brunch choices perfectly complimented the Pup pup pass, a fruited sour inspired by the “liquid marijuana” cocktail, and the Country Club The Easton Assassin, an Imperial Stout.   The Pup pup pass is an 8% fruited sour that is deceiving with it’s very clear hue and the powerful fruit taste socks your tastebuds.  Also, conditioning on the rum soaked barrels gives it a bit of a boozy flavor.

After we licked our fingers from the yummy brunch, we decided to finish by splitting an IPA together.  Mom’s Spaghetti is a 5.8% Mid west style IPA.  It has a bit of green to the taste but it is every bit of your delicious Hazy IPA we all have been enjoying nonstop.  YAH Brew is always an excellent choice for a Sunday Brunch but it was even better to be able to celebrate Scarlet’s first Father’s Day with Ben!

A Great Father’s Day

We had to peace out quick to get ready for a family BBQ.  We got to celebrate Ben’s dad and Ben’s brother-in-law for Father’s Day!  Happy Father’s Day to all the Dad’s out there!

(You can see more of our visit and pictures at our Instagram page – The Beer Thrillers on Instagram.)

YAH Brew Bar – Taps and iconic “BrewBoy” Menu Screen

All Set to Go – YAH Brew Announces Grand Opening

Its time to go, all things are set. After about a month of having their soft opening, its time for YAH Brew to have their grand opening. We (Amy, Scarlet, and I) were there yesterday, and I got to talk to Justin a little (see Amy’s article here: Ready To Kick Off The Summer) and he told me that they were just about to announce their grand opening – and here it is.

YAH Brew Ready to Kick off the Summer

Coming in hot like the 90s, YAH Brew is going to be kicking off the summer with their grand opening starting this week – kicking off on Tuesday with 90s themed trivia. The biggest day of their grand opening will be Saturday – May 27th (2023). Coinciding with blink-182’s concert at Hershey Park Stadium they are calling it “Dammit Day” and the summer season will be in full swing!

And yes, we are pretty sure we know where your newest concert pre – game location is going to be. (Hint its real close to Duck Donuts.)

Beers at YAH Brew yesterday

Their social media announcement just minutes ago:

It’s go time, and we are coming in hot! 🔥

This week will officially launch our grand opening. What does that entail?

The Taproom is now open every Tuesday from 5-10. DJ Hollywood will be hosting trivia with 90s themed rounds with a start time of 630. Seating is FCFS, no reservations

YAH Brew – Facebook Post

Grand Opening – Be There or Be Square

Get all of your 90s jargon ready now, because its time for YAH Brew’s Grand Opening. This is a 90s themed micro brewery in downtown Hershey. (The former Tattered Flag Bar location near Duck Donuts on Governor Road / Rt 422.)

The following comes from our YAH Brew Opening Announcement article:

Justin Hoak and his wife Aimee Hoak started YAH Brew in May of 2022, getting production and legal rights and licensing as per the state. They have been touring brewfests ever since, brewfests cush as the Drink the Cookie Table brewfests in Pittsburgh (both last year’s and this year’s), as well as the Prototype Invitation Brewfest, Best Brunch Ever, the Hummelstown Winter Fling, and many others. They have done collaborations with lots of top notch breweries including Fourscore Beer Co.

Justin has previously worked as head brewer for Tattered Flag as well as helping out at Spring House Brewing and JoBoy’s Brewing. He is a good friend living just a few blocks away, and I know him and Aimee are throwing their all into the brewery. They have been working tirelessly on getting this up and running. Their beers are definitely not to be missed out on. If you’ve had some of the hazy IPAs, fruited sours, and seltzers from Tattered Flag in the past few years, as well as from YAH Brewing exactly, you’ll know what I mean.

The brewery is female owned, one of only a handful in Pennsylvania.

YAH Brew Coming to Hershey in Spring 2023 – The Beer Thrillers

This is big news for Justin and Aimee, and so happy for them getting to open this brewery. They have poured a lot of hard work into this (they were just at the Haze it Forward brewfest at Imprint Beer Co, Hatboro, on Saturday. They have been hard at work, and hitting the rounds getting this brewery up; despite several hurdles, including local township – Hummelstown.

(This Wednesday at the Town Hall meeting, they will hear Justin’s appeal to be able to continue producing the beer for YAH Brew at his location in Hummelstown.)

Yesterday we got to visit YAH Brew for brunch, and it was absolutely fantastic. Beers as always was on point, the loaded tots were absolutely banging, and was just a great time.

This place will be hopping once concert season, and Hershey Park season gets in full swing. I can’t wait.

Ready To Kick Off The Summer https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/05/21/ready-to-kick-off-the-summer/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=ready-to-kick-off-the-summer Mon, 22 May 2023 03:38:46 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=11475
Beers on a patio, on a gorgeous sunny day, with friends and family – Lets Get Summer Started!

Let’s Kick Summer Off

In many ways Memorial Day weekend is the unceremonious start to summer.  Most consider June 21, summer solstice as the start of summer.  I have also been looking at it as a way to make a difference for The Longest Day (Alzheimer’s Association – The Longest Day) for the Alzheimer’s Association.  The Beer Thrillers are looking to work on a Home Brewers Event to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association for The Longest Day for 2024.  Any ideas for venues, vendors, and / or ways to fund raise for the event don’t hesitate to reach out – thebeerthrillers@gmail.com. We can’t wait to combine our passion for craft beer with an awesome fundraising event for a worthy cause.

The Start of Summer on Alderaan – The Five Day Forecast

But first, we need to enjoy the beautiful Sunday we had today.  We checked out the local board game yard sale in Harrisburg held by Harrisburg Board Game. (Harrisburg Board Game Sale Day Event.) The yard sale was a bit of nostalgia games and lots of skill and strategy level games.  From the Facebook event for their annual Harrisburg Board Game Day 2023 “This exciting event, held once a year, is designed to bring people of all ages and skill levels together to enjoy the thrill of board games in our capital city.”

The best part was Scarlet just woke up from a nap when we pulled up so she was in the best mood.  It felt like our little 6 – month – old baby was greeting and smiling at everyone there.  Everyone was friendly and happy to discuss anything about board games.  We picked out a game to play with the kids and a game Ben used to play with friends. (I picked out Monkey Lab for the girls to play, and Ben picked out Game of Thrones: The Board Game.)

(Game of Thrones: The Board Game – 2nd Edition and Monkey Lab.)

Then we swung by YAH Brew in Hershey.  We had both been drooling over the new food offerings and finally made it work with our schedule for brunch today!  They do brunch every Sunday 9am-5pm.  What drew our attention to the brunch offerings was their Facebook post about their “Mornin’ Smash”, described on the menu as “Two ground sirloin + breakfast sausage patties topped with sausage gravy and cheddar cheese on a butter biscuit bun” But when we got their we quickly decided on the Loaded Tots since this description was equally as drool worthy “Platter of crispy tots, topped with scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage gravy and cheddar cheese.  We split the tots and each got a beer.  Ben did the Imprint Beer Co, – Haze it Forward and I did the Orange Sherbet Push Pop; a sour ale with orange, vanilla and sherbet.

(Our time at YAH Brew.)

The Orange sherbet push pop sour ale definitely took me back to the summers as a kid and snacking on the Flintstones sherbet push pops.

Flinstones Push Pop

The yabba dabba do orange to be more specific.  As we enjoyed our tots and our brews with this beautiful Sunday weather we are ready to celebrate summer coming very soon, drinking many more brews on the patio at YAH Brew and fundraising for The Longest Day.

Drink More Beer!

It Was All A Dream

It was all a dream, I used to read Word Up! magazine
Salt-n-Pepa and Heavy D up in the limousine
Hangin’ pictures on my wall
Every Saturday Rap Attack, Mr. Magic, Marley Marl
I let my tape rock ’til my tape popped
Smokin’ weed in Bambú, sippin’ on Private Stock
Way back, when I had the red and black lumberjack
With the hat to match

Remember Rappin’ Duke? Duh-ha, duh-ha
You never thought that hip-hop would take it this far

Now I’m in the limelight ’cause I rhyme tight
Time to get paid, blow up like the World Trade
Born sinner, the opposite of a winner
Remember when I used to eat sardines for dinner
Peace to Ron G, Brucie B, Kid Capri
Funkmaster Flex, Lovebug Starski

I’m blowin’ up like you thought I would
Call the crib, same number, same hood, it’s all good
And if you don’t know, now you know

YAH Brew

Young at Heart (YAH Brewing)

It was all a dream.

We got the pleasure of visiting the new YAH Brew soft opening in Hershey, Pa over the weekend.  The place was packed and it was awesome to see Amiee and Justin’s dream of a 90s themed brewery come to life.  The nostalgia hits home but it was the relaxing vibe of the place that is the best.  Even being packed other patrons are happy to scooch over to make a seat and comment on which brew they were also enjoying.  Now, this is a brewery!

(Read about our covering the YAH Brewery’s starting their soft opening here.)

There were four of us that enjoyed the visit.  Ben and I, of course; and we also brought along my mom and Scarlet too.  My mom brought along her crafts to work on while sipping her beer.  Scarlet brought along lots of baby toys while sipping her formula.  Scarlet wasn’t the only baby there and it made for a fun time to see other small ones.  Kids could sip on Little Hug fruit barrels “huggies” if you remember those and they still make them!

The YAH Brew “BrewBoy” (GameBoy) Menu

When trying to pick out which beer to start off with it is easy to get distracted by the 90s nostalgia, the place exudes nostalgia.  You are mesmerized by the all 90s music videos playing as well as the super NES console hooked up on the other TV.  Before you know it you are trying to remember if you still have your super NES console at home and how many times you blew on that Donkey Kong cartridge to get it to work again.

There were beer drinkers enjoying the patio outside and even a dachshund was joining in at YAH Brew as well.  Any other day I would have been all over an outside patio seating but I felt like my luck it would immediately start raining again. I was going to start off with Fourscore + YA Brew Yeet fresh but that was kicked so I tried the Gushee: Blueberry, Pomegranate, Peach Sour ale.  It’s served in a glass that looks like a Gusher.

YAH Brew – Gushee

(Check out our Instagram – The Beer Thrillers @ Instagram – to see more pictures of YAH Brew.)

Remember those fruit snacks from the 90s.  It looked like a large Gusher! We also sipped on Internet Café an oatmeal stout that was delicious and the Wild Rabbit IPA from Ever Grain.  We nibbled on some chips that were available for snacks.  We can’t wait to see what items will come from a 90s nostalgia themed brewery kitchen when they have their Grand Opening next month.

(Left to Right – SueAnn’s Wild Rabbit, Amy’s Gushee, and Ben’s Internet Cafe)

I had to go for the Shimmy Shake: Peanut Butter Egg as my second brew.  I remember it fondly as my treat after a long and tiring Easter Day with the family.

Amy reviewed the Shimmy Shake for her Easter weekly column

(Read more about Amy’s thoughts on the Shimmy Shake from her Easter weekly column here: Peanut Butter Eggs, Easter, Beer, and Yah Brew’s Shimmy Shake (Beer Review).)

But is it a Malt beverage or a golden stout?  It is listed as a Malt Beverage at the brewery but a golden stout on Untapped.  This lead us to have a lengthy argument on the two different beverage types.  But, regardless,  It was delicious!  I had to pull it away from my mom too, she kept stealing it!  Maybe we will rethink taking my mom out to breweries with us.

YAH Brew – Hazed by the Bell in the forefront, and YAH Brew – Shimmy Shake in the background.

We also had the Hazed by the Bell New England Hazy IPA.  This one had a bit of a hoppy taste but a must try when you stop in!

Cheers to the brewery location and we can’t wait to see it for the Grand Opening.

Thank You For Reading

Thank you for reading everyone! Editor B. Kline jumping in here for a closing bit. Thank you to everyone for reading. April was a fantastic month here at The Beer Thrillers with lots of great articles, great participation in the blog and site, and a lot of visitors to the site. Our Battle of the Breweries ended with Allusion Brewing Company winning, and we are going to be traveling back out to Vandergrift sometime in July to do a big event for them.

Speaking of big events – starting May 7th through May 10th is the Craft Brewers Conference. We will be there hanging out. If you are gonna be there, let us know and we’ll meet up! We can’t wait to go out and come down to Nashville TN (our first time there).

We have started our big project of doing maps of each state and showcasing all the breweries involved. So far we have three done:

Hoping by the end of May to have at least five more done. I would like to have the complete country done by the end of 2023, but we’ll see. Its quite time intensive.

There’s a lot more coming to the blog, and a lot of things happening. In just a few days is May the Fourth, which usually means a lot of breweries are turning their regular IPAs into Star Wars themed IPAs, and all kind of other shenanigans.

Make sure you subscribe and follow, also keep us bookmarked so you can see all the new stuff. We’ve also affiliated and sponsored with a few things like Pretzels.com and Beer Drop.com – you can read about them with the links in this paragraph. Great discounts there for you (and helps us here at the blog).

Amy is about to head out with her mom to see a Beatles cover band (Rain) in Lancaster and I’m gonna get this uploaded and take care of Scarlet for the night.
