When Washington Goes Dark: What the 2025 Federal Shutdown Means for Pennsylvania Breweries

For beer lovers, the notion of a federal government shutdown might seem distant—something about national parks, IRS forms, and Congress fighting over budgets. But for breweries—especially craft breweries with narrow margins, seasonal releases, and regulatory dependencies—a shutdown can become existential. In October 2025, as federal funding lapsed and agencies began furloughing non-essential staff, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) effectively ground to a halt in its regulatory functions.

This post is a deep dive into how the shutdown ripples through the craft brewing world, nationally and in Pennsylvania, how breweries can respond, which ones may weather the storm best, and what the future might hold.

The Government Shut Down and Pennsylvania Breweries (2025 Edition)

1. Overview: The 2025 Shutdown and What’s Actually “Off the Shelf”

The TTB, a critical agency for breweries (and wineries, distilleries), publicly posted its shutdown plan: out of approximately 459 staffers, 398 would be furloughed, leaving only around 61 “excepted” employees to maintain legally required and essential operations.

What functions continue (and why)

The TTB’s “excepted” functions are narrowly defined. Among the tasks that will continue:

Processing excise tax returns that include remittance (i.e. payments)
Maintaining minimal computer / IT operations to avoid data loss or system collapse
Protecting statute expirations, liens, seizures, federal property — i.e. safeguarding legal and financial infrastructures
Criminal enforcement, to the extent required by statute, and operations that cannot legally pause

However, most of what breweries rely on will be suspended or delayed:

Certificate of Label Approval (COLA) reviews and approvals
Formula approvals
Brewer’s permit application or modification
Laboratory services and testing
Non-criminal investigations, audits, inspections
Administrative support, customer service, and non-statutory tasks

In effect, if you had a label to approve or a change in formula to submit, it’s on ice. You can submit electronically, but nothing moves until TTB is fully funded again.

Trade associations are already warning of a backlog when operations resume.

2. National Impact: The Shockwaves through the Craft Beer Industry

It’s easy to imagine that a government shutdown is a “Washington problem,” but the brewing sector is one of the less obvious industries hit hard and fast. Let’s trace the national picture before we localize to Pennsylvania.

Industry analysts note that during shutdowns, many breweries end up with “tanks full of beer they can’t release.”

The Brewers Association, reacting to the current shutdown, is advising brewers to expect immediate disruptions to labeling, formula, permitting, and that the pause may last for some time.

Distillers, winemakers, and crossover impacts

While this post is beer-centric, the parallels in the wine and spirits world help underscore how universal the regulatory risk is:

Distillers see the same freeze on label and formula approvals during shutdowns.
The wine industry notes that permit and label processing stops entirely, though excise payment functions remain.

In short: The shutdown isn’t a minor inconvenience. It threatens growth, planning, and the very operations of craft beer producers across the country.

3. Pennsylvania Breweries: Facing the Shutdown in the Keystone State

Now let’s zoom in. Pennsylvania is one of the heavyweight states in craft beer. The stakes are high—and uneven across breweries.

The state’s brewing landscape (pre-shutdown)

To understand who’s most vulnerable, we need to recap how Pennsylvania’s beer economy stands:

Pennsylvania ranks among the top states in craft beer production and economic impact.
As of 2023/2024, the craft beer industry in PA contributed billions to state economies, with strong volumes.
However, 2024 saw some contraction: some of PA’s larger craft breweries reported sales declines, and at least 18 breweries closed in the state.
The craft boom in PA has also been tempered by saturation, competition, and broader market pressures.
Additionally, in 2025, Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant (a multi-location brewpub chain that included ten in PA) abruptly closed all locations, citing financial challenges.

Given this backdrop, a shutdown may push already marginal players dangerously close to the edge.

Who in Pennsylvania may handle this better (and who’s vulnerable)

Best positioned:

Large, vertically integrated breweries
For example, D.G. Yuengling & Son, with deep reserves, long operating history, and diversified operations, is better able to weather temporary disruptions. (Though even they are not immune—2024 saw an 8% sales drop for Yuengling.)
Breweries with stable, ongoing SKUs
Brewers whose core lineup dominates their sales are less reliant on frequent label tweaks or seasonal launches.
Breweries with local focus
Breweries that sell primarily within Pennsylvania and whose distribution doesn’t cross state lines may be less exposed to label/distribution bottlenecks.
Those with compliance and regulatory foresight
Breweries that preemptively processed label changes, modular formula options, or prepared alternate versions may be more resilient.
Cash-rich or well-funded operations
The ones with financial reserves to absorb a few weeks (or even months) of stalled product launches.

Most vulnerable:

Small startups and taproom-centric breweries
New breweries relying on label and permit approval to launch or move beyond taproom sales could face crippling delays.
Breweries with heavy seasonal catalogs
Those whose revenue depends heavily on limited releases (e.g. fall pumpkin ales) are in the crosshairs.
Breweries with narrow margins
Those already struggling with rising costs, labor pressure, or debt burden will feel immediate financial strain.
Operators with heavy interstate distribution
If their label approvals are stalled, they can’t ship new beers out of state, which may suppress growth or demand.

While I did not find credible published quotes yet from specific Pennsylvania breweries making statements about the 2025 shutdown, the patterns and warnings are consistent from breweries in other states and in prior shutdowns. The Brewers Association, American Craft Beer, and LibationLaw provide strong industry frameworks.

4. Historical Context: Shutdowns, Precedents, & Lessons Learned

To truly appreciate the severity of the current landscape, it helps to look back at how prior shutdowns have hit breweries—and what lessons can shape responses.

2019–2020 shutdowns and craft beer

The 2019 federal shutdown (Dec 2018 – Jan 2019) was one of the longer interruptions in memory. During that time:

The TTB essentially stopped approving new labels, formulas, and permits. Breweries were left waiting.
In the Philadelphia region, breweries canceled or delayed seasonal launches.
Some breweries reportedly had beer languishing in tanks because they couldn’t legally bring it to market.

The takeaway: even a few weeks of delay can derail a brewery’s schedule, cash flow, and consumer momentum.

Shutdowns during the Trump era & industry behavior

While not always explicitly tied to breweries, shutdowns under the Trump administration repeatedly spotlighted delays in regulatory agencies—a pattern breweries grew accustomed to treating as “business risk.”

Some Pennsylvania breweries are better positioned to survive (or even thrive) during a regulatory freeze. Below are illustrative types and examples, along with traits to emulate.

D.G. Yuengling & Son (Pottsville, PA)

Legacy scale & capital reserves: As the oldest brewery in America, Yuengling has operational depth and financial strength.
Core SKU dominance: They rely heavily on flagship beers, less frequent branding shifts, and have strong name recognition.
Vertical infrastructure: Large operations, distribution networks, and buffer capacity give flexibility.
Community and brand loyalty: Their historic brand status gives them a cushion when marketing or new SKUs stall.

While not immune to shutdown pressures—they saw an 8% sales drop in 2024—Yuengling is in a relatively advantaged position.

Tröegs Independent Brewing (Hershey, PA)

As one of Pennsylvania’s well-known craft names, Tröegs has a diversified portfolio, regional distribution, and a stable market presence. Their size and brand equity give them room to absorb delays. (Cited among PA’s top producers in recent rankings.)

Pittsburgh Brewing / Iron City

Pittsburgh has a storied brewing heritage. Pittsburgh Brewing (and legacy brands tied with it) can tap into legacy branding and local loyalty.

Mid-sized regional brewers

Brewers who have scaled somewhat—enough to maintain reserves, but still nimble—are in a sweet spot. If they primarily serve Pennsylvania or neighboring states, so long as label and permit issues are handled prudently, they may endure better than small startups.

Taproom / direct-sales centric brewers

Breweries whose revenue and brand come largely from on-site sales, community events, and local customers can sidestep some distribution and label pressures. While they still need regulatory compliance, their reliance on novelty SKUs is lower.

Traits to emulate (beyond names)

Advance filing discipline
Modular product planning
Cash buffer and financial flexibility
Strong local consumer support
Robust taproom and direct-to-consumer channels
Agile marketing and pipeline coordination

These traits help create a buffer against the sudden regulatory blackout.

7. Closing Thoughts

This shutdown is more than a bureaucratic freeze — it’s a stress test on how deeply entwined craft beer is with federal infrastructure. I’ve seen breweries born in garages and grow into regional legends; I’ve watched label art get revised, formulas rebalanced, and seasonal beers become brand inflection points. The TTB, often unseen by drinkers, is a silent gatekeeper. When it pauses, the gates slam shut.

Pennsylvania, with its brewing heritage rooted in Yuengling and vibrant craft corridors in Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, Lancaster, and beyond, is front and center in this fight. Some breweries will grit their way through with lean operations and agile pivots. Others may stagger. A few may not survive. That’s not alarmism — it’s acknowledging the unexpected: months of delays, a backlog of approvals, and consumer impatience.

To brewers in Pennsylvania: move carefully, prioritize your essential SKUs, protect your cash, and plan as though this shutdown could last weeks — or even stretch long enough to undermine your seasonal wheels. Trade groups, local MLA’s, and the Pennsylvania Brewers Association must be your ally. Use them. Stay vocal in public forums, media, and with congressional offices — your local voice counts.

I believe in the resilience of this community. Beer thrives on risk, on experimentation, and on the tenacity of people who wake daily to mash, boil, ferment, package, and sell. But risk without hedges is needless and preventable. Use this as a wake-up call: regulatory risk is real. Build for it. And when the breweries in Pennsylvania emerge from this shutdown, let the stories of adaptation, survival, and ingenuity be part of what defines the next chapter in American craft beer.

Boxcar Brew Works is Closing Their Doolittle Station Taproom

Unfortunately the rough year that is 2025 continues, as another brewery announces its taproom closure. On the heels of numerous large announcements, as well as Iron Hill announcing three taproom closures, Boxcar Brew Works is the next to announce their closure. There is a silver lining in this though, with the announcement of Premise Brewing emerging.

The following is the announcement that Boxcar Brew Works just posted on Facebook:

Hi Everyone,

I would like to thank you for your continued support and loyalty to Boxcar Brew Works over the years! It has been a joy to serve you all over the last 8+ years.

This is a message I have been regretting writing. It saddens me to inform you that the taproom for Boxcar Brew Works located on the Doolittle Station complex (1290Rich Hwy) will be closing permanently on Sunday 09/28/2025. With the new owners of the property, we were unable to come to a short- or long-term lease agreement. It’s with bittersweet and mixed feelings that I make this announcement. The complex and customers have been good to us over the years with us making many new friends and seeing some old friends with which we have lost touch. You never know who would be in the train car.

It’s not the end of the story for us though. Boxcar Beer will be available at a few different places until we can no longer distribute at the end of the year. Until then you can pick us up at some of our regular stops; El Gordo Burro (Du Bois, PA), Handlebar Cafe and Craft House, Saxonburg, PA, Super Sub & Six Pak (Du Bois, PA), Angry Goat (Du Bois, PA) and a few others out in the wild (Mike’s Beer Bar(Pgh), Federal Taphouse (State College). Please stop into any of them and enjoy a cold Boxcar beer.

This isn’t the end of us though! We will be opening a new brewery in downtown Du Bois soon. Boxcar Brew Works is currently located at 1290 Rich Hwy #300, DuBois, PA 15801. They have enjoyed over 8 years in business, and have been a lovely spot for the community and tourists alike. Starting November 1st, White Horse Brewing LLC will be having a month long celebration for their 12th year anniversary! Congratulations to White Horse Brewing LLC for 12 years in Berlin, PA, and for quality craft beer and being a great member of their community.

I got to visit White Horse Brewing in November of 2020. (See: The Trip to Indy – Day 7 Recap: There and Back Again – A Drunk Hobbit’s Tale (WhiteHorse Brewing LLC, Gearhouse Brewing Company, Rubber Soul Brewing)

I had a fantastic time there and the beers were great, the people and employees were wonderful, and it was very nice and relaxing, and this was all in such a fraught time (November of 2020), with COVID-19 / Coronavirus stuff still going on, with the election, with everything going on. It was nice to relax, have some beers, talk to the employees, and mellow out on my trip.

The Sloop Brew Crew was in town to collaborate on a brand new beer with the team at Troegs Independent Brewing. Sloop Brewing Company visited the brewery in Hershey to help Troegs Independent Brewing come up with their latest collaboration. Already this year Troegs Brewing has done collaborations with:

Dewey Beer Co – Adventure was Promised
Sworn Brewing, Antifragile Brewing, and Warwick Farm Brewing – Storm the Field

Sloop John T

Sloop Brewing and Troegs Independent Brewing have teamed up to create ‘Sloop John T’, a double IPA brewed with Lotus, Citra, and Columbus hops. Current estimates for the ABV are 8.4%. The beer will be in 16 oz cans and be available in the Troegs Brewery general store in singles, four packs, and cases. Four packs will be 18.99$.

The Troegs Brewing notes are: “We taste sweet citrus and tropical fruit notes”.

Twelve78 Brewing Company To Open Its Doors on May 17th In Phoenixville

Phoenixville is set to expand its brewing scene with the opening of Twelve78 Brewing Company located at 35 Bridge Street. This new establishment is owned by Steve and Kara Rogacki, who are residents of Phoenixville and are preparing to open their doors on May 17th, 2024.

Twelve78 Brewing Company has already made waves in the local beer community, earning high praise at the inaugural Pennsylvania Homebrew Invitational. The brewery started its journey about three years ago, achieving notable success at various beer festivals. The operation is spearheaded by Steve and his wife, Kara, who have been married for nearly 24 years and are parents to two sons, Jake and Aidan. Both sons have played a role in the establishment of the brewery and taproom.

The brewery plans to merge traditional beer styles with innovative brewing techniques, producing Thiolized Lagers, Pale Ales, and IPAs. Particularly popular is their Sour Smoothie Ale line, which features sour ales mixed with a variety of fruit purees, ice cream, marshmallows, and more. Twelve78’s operations are based around a 3-vessel 3.5 BBL brewhouse complemented by both 3.5 and 7BBL fermenters.

Visitors will be able to enjoy these creations from 16 taps located in a 5,000-square-foot space that includes three large roll-up doors, aiming to bring the outdoors inside regardless of the weather. While there won’t be an in-house kitchen, a permanent food truck will be stationed on the premises. Additionally, Twelve78 will offer an assortment of 4-packs for takeaway, including mixed options. Planned events include Bingo nights on Tuesdays and Trivia on Thursdays.

Steve’s brewing passion began almost three decades ago in college, where his advanced Chemistry class included a segment on brewing for students over 21. He brewed his first batch in the early 90s and, despite medical restrictions that prevent him from drinking, continued to find satisfaction in the enjoyment his brews brought to others. For Steve, brewing is both a passion and an art form.

As first reported a couple months back (Aldus Brewing to Open a Taproom in Downtown Hanover) Aldus Brewng is getting a second location – a taproom in Downtown Hanover, at the Dolphin & Anchor Pub.

They just announced (just under an hour ago) that they have an official grand opening date set for their downtown Hanover tap room.

(Drum roll please) ….and that date is set for: Friday – February 2nd, 2024. Groundhog’s Day. So perhaps that means we’ll relive over and over and over and over the grand opening of their tap room!

Joe Black Takes Over Olde Bedford Brewing Company

Olde Bedford Brewing Company (OBBC) is now under new ownership with the start of the new year, as Dave (pictured above) and Mary Heller have passed on ownership of (OBBC) to long time Bedford resident Joseph Black.

We know Joe will do a fabulous job continuing the tradition of making great craft beer for Bedford and we look forward to the exciting things he has in store for the Brewery.

Joseph Black, a long time resident of Bedford, and a partner of Olde Bedford Brewing Company started working with the Hellers as a partner in 2022. With the start of 2024, he has taken over full ownership of OBBC.

Olde Bedford Brewing Company is located at 109 Railroad Street (within Fat Jimmy’s Outfitters). They opened – by the Hellers – in spring of 2018 and was the first licensed brewery in Bedford County since the 1800s.

Over the past five years, OBBC has been the recipient of various state and local awards and recognitions. The most recognized was the presentation of the PA Farm Show PA Preferred Legacy Award in 2022.

The Heller’s also expressed their thanks to the greater Bedford community and businesses for their continued support, endorsements & collaborations.

“No greater thanks can be given to owners Jim and Percy Fungaroli of Fat Jimmys Outfitters, Don Brown of G&N Realty, Bedford County Development Association, Bedford County Chamber of Commerce of PA and Downtown Bedford, Inc., and all of our loyal customers. It is with the help of all these fine people and organizations that we were able to create a great third space for Bedford.” said Heller.

No word yet officially (obviously, as this blog post is only going live an hour after they made their announcement), but it sounds like Chatty Monks Brewing Company is going to be kicking off the New Years with a bang!

Theories going around the internet include: a rebranding, a second taproom location, announcement of more contract brewing, possibly brewing collaboration, etc.

Intriguing is the PCB name and logo at the bottom. It looks like a hop cone with possibly a pagoda above it. Reading has the large Pagoda attraction, so this makes sense tying it in with the hop cone. The P could then stand for Pagoda and the B for brewing. The C maybe for company? But usually then the C would be at the end (PBC rather than PCB). So sleuths out there – what do you think it will be? Could it be Pagoda C…. Brewing? Could it be a brand new beer? A collab? A new taproom? Let us know in the comments!

Chatty Monks is currently known for contract brewing for a lot of different breweries. They have undergone new ownership in recent history, and their building and brewing has certainly increased. John Stemler (previously of Free Will Brewing) is their head brewer.

I was out to Reading and got to visit Chatty Monks Brewing back in 2020 when Dave Marrow (then previously of Tattered Flag Brewing) was the head brewer.

Walk to End ALZ – Clarion

The Walk to End ALZ comes to Clarion on Thursday, September 28th, 2023 at Lost in the Wilds Brewing. Registration is at 5:00 PM and the Opening Ceremony and Walk is at 6:00 PM.

You can go to their direct page to donate and learn more here: Walk to End ALZ – Clarion Walk. As of writing, their goal was 27,000$ and they have reached their goal with 28,214$, showing an impressive 104% achievement. Wouldn’t it be amazing to see that number go even higher?!

We are very excited to host the Clarion Alzheimer’s Walk at Lost In The Wilds this year.

Our brewery is located along the Rail 66 Country Trail, which is a four season paved hiking and biking trail. We hope that our beautiful outdoor venue and proximity to the trail will provide a perfect atmosphere for this years event. Lost In The Wilds Brewing is a microbrewery located in Shippenville, and is conveniently located at the gateway to the PA WILDS.

We currently produce a wide variety of beers on site and provide a full taproom and sprawling outdoor venue for nature and beer lovers alike. We hope to make this years Alzheimer’s Walk a great success to raise awareness about this disease while giving attendees a spacious and comfortable area to enjoy. We will be offering some fun purple cocktails during the event.

Lost in the Wilds Brewing is located in beautiful Clarion, along Route 66, and a great walking trail. Its so beautiful and wonderful to see a brewery located right alongside a great walking trail, combining two of my favorite activities in one.

Its also so great to see a brewery helping out such a tremendous cause and to have the event at their place and to support organizations fighting terrible diseases like Alzheimer’s.

Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease that usually starts slowly and progressively worsens,^[2] and is the cause of 60–70% of cases of dementia.^[2][10] The most common early symptom is difficulty in remembering recent events.^[1] As the disease advances, symptoms can include problems with language, disorientation (including easily getting lost), mood swings, loss of motivation, self-neglect, and behavioral issues.^[2] As a person’s condition declines, they often withdraw from family and society.^[11] Gradually, bodily functions are lost, ultimately leading to death. Although the speed of progression can vary, the typical life expectancy following diagnosis is three to nine years.^{[needs update][8][12]}

The cause of Alzheimer’s disease is poorly understood.^[11] There are many environmental and genetic risk factors associated with its development. The strongest genetic risk factor is from an allele of APOE.^[13]^[14] Other risk factors include a history of head injury, clinical depression, and high blood pressure.^[1] The disease process is largely associated with amyloid plaques, neurofibrillary tangles, and loss of neuronal connections in the brain.^[15] A probable diagnosis is based on the history of the illness and cognitive testing, with medical imaging and blood tests to rule out other possible causes.^[5]^[16] Initial symptoms are often mistaken for normal brain aging.^[11] Examination of brain tissue is needed for a definite diagnosis, but this can only take place after death.^[17] Good nutrition, physical activity, and engaging socially are known to be of benefit generally in aging, and may help in reducing the risk of cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s.^[15]

No treatments can stop or reverse its progression, though some may temporarily improve symptoms.^[2] Affected people become increasingly reliant on others for assistance, often placing a burden on caregivers.^[18] The pressures can include social, psychological, physical, and economic elements.^[18] Exercise programs may be beneficial with respect to activities of daily living and can potentially improve outcomes.^[19] Behavioral problems or psychosis due to dementia are often treated with antipsychotics, but this is not usually recommended, as there is little benefit and an increased risk of early death.^[20]^[21]

As of 2020, there were approximately 50 million people worldwide with Alzheimer’s disease.^[9] It most often begins in people over 65 years of age, although up to 10% of cases are early-onset impacting those in their 30s to mid-60s.^[17]^[4] It affects about 6% of people 65 years and older,^[11] and women more often than men.^[22] The disease is named after German psychiatrist and pathologist Alois Alzheimer, who first described it in 1906.^[23] Alzheimer’s financial burden on society is large, with an estimated global annual cost of US$1 trillion.^[9] It is ranked as the seventh leading cause of death in the United States.^[15]

Getting a Look at Sworn Brewing

This is going to be a long post about the soon to be brewery – Sworn Brewing Company coming to Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. Josh, Amy, and I (Ben) got to come out and visit Jesse and Amanda at Sworn Brewing and get to hang out for a bit and check out the place in a behind the scenes look.

Firstly, I want to say sorry for it taking so long to get this article out. It has been super hectic here at The Beer Thrillers HQ, and with all of us writing this article. We had a crazy busy weekend – and busy week – when we got out to visit. (Saturday – Amy and I were in Vandergrift celebrating Allusion Brewing Company’s Battle of the Breweries Win; Sunday – a friend of mine invited me to go with to Philly to watch the Premier League games, and then Monday – Amy, Josh, and I got to visit Sworn Brewing Company.) (And this was all on top of the other stuff we had going on, most of which is articles you can find on here.) I have also been very busy with our “Futurama Monday” – which has been a new blog article as well as new YouTube video essay each Monday.

This is also Josh’s first time jumping back in and writing with us since 2021. So welcome back Josh! Good to have you back buddy!

So before I hand things over to Josh, I’ll give a quick set up to this, and then we will go from there.

The Set – Up

Amanda and Jesse are married and co – owners of Sworn Brewing Company. Jesse is also head brewer. We heard about them opening up their new brewery in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, and I reached out to Amanda when I saw a post of hers’ on one of the beer groups. We locked down a meeting date – July 24th, 2023 – and all set to go. So Josh, Amy, and myself met with Amanda and Jesse and got a walk through and a sneak peek look at the upcoming brewery.

For this article, I’m going to let Josh start us off, then switch over to Amy, and then I’ll wrap things up and conclude the article. Getting Sworn In – A Behind the Scenes Look at Sworn Brewing Company

Oh … hey there. It’s that other beer nerd that used to do beer reviews. Long time no see, right? An even longer time since I’ve written a review, let alone been here to co-author a brewer interview. Perfect time to come back, right? Thought so. I could waste your valuable time reading more drivel or I could just cut to the chase. Probably best if I just got stuck in about the visit Amy, Ben, and I had at a small brewery called Sworn Brewing Company located off East Trindle Road.

Sometimes one just needs to let opportunity in when it knocks, lest one be left out in the cold, so when the chance to visit a brand new, not yet open, brewery came across my notifications, I may have had to invite myself (okay, who am I kidding, I totally invited myself) to check the place out and get to know the new face. Truth be told though, Jesse Mills is no new face in the brewing scene. He knows his way around a Fermenter and Brite tank as he’s got some serious chops, having been in the business for over a decade. An excellent starting point and will make for great conversation. Upon arrival, I’m greeted with a quaint location tucked behind the Atlantic Pools and slot in near a black Subaru WRX STi (don’t worry about the car bro, we’re here for beer). Ben and Amy haven’t yet arrived, but no harm I figure, I’m early so I’ll just walk in and introduce myself. Step through the glass door with a small sign denoting what was once a catering business is now a brewery and step into a remarkable little place. I’d never have guessed that Jesse and his wife Amanda had been working tirelessly for a month prior to put the place right. A month? Wait … *checks notes* … yep, a literal month since the spot was purchased, did the new owners turn the key and renovate the inside. And what a transformation they’ve done. The floors still bear the character of tire prints from being a garage and then the spots and spills of a catering hub, but they are as clean as ever, given the elbow grease put into them. A corrugated metal and Australian wood bartop adorn the rear quarter of the space, adding function, form, and beauty. The walls were painted dark to add an air of comfort and warmth, and the overhead Edison lights help to drive that feeling home. Even with the place 80% complete, I feel immediately welcome, as if this brewery has been here forever. Jesse is gleefully explaining how things will look when Ben and Amy finally walk through the door. FINALLY! We can get down to business and talk shop with the rightfully excited owners.

There’s something beautiful in watching someone who is passionate about their field of expertise talk about what makes them happy. In the few hours we spent with Jesse, I don’t recall ever seeing the mile wide smile leave his countenance. His joy was infectious and I know I’m not the only one that feels this way. The brewery is small on purpose, not because droves of people aren’t invited, but because a personal, individual approach is more easily achieved. Customers aren’t going to be seen as a number, but as friends or family. While that will come off as a negative to some, personally I see it as their greatest strength. In keeping things small, the beer will only benefit from this approach because scaling production up means many of the nuances and subtleties are glossed over or don’t have the chance to be experienced. I could go on and on about what was discussed, but there are two other authors waiting for me to finish gushing over the splendid time and laughs shared, so I’ll button up and discuss one of the liquid libations afforded to our visit.

One such drink was called “Dreams Debunked”. This pineapple and strawberry kettle sour sits low on octane and high on enjoyment. With the outside reaching deep into the 80’s (and 90’s the week after), this sweetheart of a sipper could function quite nicely as a break from midday chores or a sweet treat at the end of the summer’s day. Tropical waves wash over your sense of smell and suddenly the absence of sand beneath your feet becomes apparent. You’re still in Central PA, but your nose is on a beach (lucky devil). Honestly, I could have lived in the nose of Dreams Debunked, but not tasting it would have been a disservice to our hosts, so … bottoms up! As in the description, so too on the tongue does pineapple show up first. And it does so in a very dominate fashion, almost to the point where I questioned if strawberry was included. Almost. You see, there was a bit of a time element to this tart concoction and not enough of it had elapsed. There was plenty of time left in our visit, which meant there was plenty of time to get acquainted with our hosts and this beverage. Good thing too, as the more my taste buds became used to the liquid, so too did more flavor notes appear. The once king pineapple had abdicated its throne to allow its equally tart and sweet partner time in the limelight. The bottom third of this sample is glorious, almost jammy (or marmalade for our Commonwealth constituents) strawberry. The flavors and fruit mentioned in the description are, in fact, present and accounted for. All it needs is a little time and patience. Speaking of time and patience, Sworn Brewing Company is not yet open, though the target is set for September. I’ll be honest, I can’t wait to get Sworn in. How about you, Amy?

Sworn To a Good Time at Sworn Brewing

It was just a few weeks ago The Beer Thrillers gang was invited for a sneak peek of the new Sworn Brewing company and taproom. Owners Jesse and Amanda Mills were there to show us their second home. The minute you walk in you can tell these 2 have poured their heart and soul into opening this nano – brewery.

I mean that type of passion should be evident by this quote from their Facebook page “We will strive to make sure the highest quality items we can get our hands on will be used in every single process. Everything that comes out of our taps, every single small batch of beer that we make will go through a rigorous quality control process. If it does not meet our standards, it will never be consumed by the customer. We are not here to cut corners, we are here to make sure we can provide you with the best possible experience that you deserve, what the craft brewing industry deserves!”

We also got the sense of feeling pretty comfortable like they were trying to create a second home for us and the rest of our beer drinking friends. Well actually, there are plans to accommodate our liquor and wine drinking friends as well, stay tuned. Jesse Mills adds using local distilleries and wineries is very important to him and the rest of the Sworn family.

When they served us our first taster of beer Amanda has put down some chips with queso and some salsa as well. The queso and salsa were house made and intentions of putting it on the menu were also discussed. Both Amanda and Jesse started talking about the same passion about these ingredients as they did about the beer they just served us.

But let’s back up a second. We were given a taste of the Dreams Debunked fruited sour with Pineapple and Strawberry. This lightly fruited sour has an ABV of 4.2% and lightly dances on the tongue. The fruit is not overpowering in anyway. What excited me the most was the pairing of the smoked queso along with the Dreams Debunked.

The smokiness of the queso with the salt from the chip paired with the sweet from the Dreams Debunked also helped accent the two different flavors. When I first started drinking DD I tasted strawberry by the end and including the queso I tasted the pineapple.

Jesse also commented, when they are setup and ready, they will be making fresh bread to go along with the house made queso as well as other items for dipping.

Don’t let the unyielding passion for high quality products steer you away thinking it is a serious crowd. When you walk into the bathroom you are greeted with a picture of Mr. Jones above the toilet and as you would turn to use the toilet or hopefully walk towards the sink to wash your hands you are greeted with a picture of Craig Jones the Movie Friday.

Jesse and Amanda are giggling right along with us as they tell us they can’t wait to hear the first customer walk in there and bust out laughing from seeing the pictures.

This is your place to hang out and for everyone wanting an excellent product, welcoming atmosphere and something relaxing and not so serious. We can’t wait to add this spot to our frequent stops.

A Look Behind The Sword at Sworn Brewing Company

As I said at the top of the article, discussed getting to meet with them, and we did get to on Monday – July 24th. Amy and I dropped Scarlet off at my parents after Amy came home from work and then we were off to Mechanicsburg. Hit a little traffic on the bridge, but got there in no time.

Josh beat us there, but we were immediately greeted by Amanda and Jesse. Both super awesome and wonderful people. They showed us around the place, talking about the brewery’s past – as a catering business (twice over) and a car shop.

It was great listening to their plans for the building itself. They discussed the bar top, the wood of it, the corrugated steel for the outside of it, the epoxy used on the wood, etc. The attention to detail is incredible with Jesse.

The story of them trying to pain the tiles of the ceiling for the bathroom was hilarious, and thus why only the bathroom has the black tiles and not the whole brewery.

Jesse is very focused on his beer and discussed his past brewing experience – both professionally and as a home brewer. The brewing system at Sworn Brewing Company is going to be a 1 BBL system. Not much bigger than home brewing for Jesse. He said he prefers it this way – it lets him be more precise, dialed in, and make the exact beer he wants.

With Jesse and Amanda we got to discuss a great number of topics big and small. From the brewery itself, to past brewing experiences, to consumer experiences, to new breweries in the area – and old breweries in the area – to competitions in brewing, to traveling for beer (Vermont, New Hampshire, The Answer, etc.), we discussed beer groups and beer blogs – both good and bad – online, Untappd, and the other factors that will play into how successful a brewery is.

Amanda and Jesse are very community focused. They love their location, love Mechanicsburg, and want to see both thrive. They live in Dillsburg which didn’t have any good locations suitable for them, so they opened up shop on Trindle Road.

Dreams Debunked was absolutely amazing. A wonderful, delicious sour. From this alone – I know I can’t wait for the brewery to open up and get to try the rest of that tap list he’s preparing.

The brewery itself is very inviting. With the roll up bay door and the entrance leading you right to the bar, with all of the available seating (including a table reserved for their parents at all times – complete with LEGO Flowers), the entire place is just very homey.

Listening to Jesse and Amanda discuss their plans for the future – with food trucks, home made bread, the world renowned hot dog vendor that they know personally, and so much more – it will be fantastic. This will certainly be a great boon to the town and the brewing community in the area.

Jesse Mills comes with a great brewing background, having home brewed, and brewed professionally. He’s beaten some great local breweries in home brewing competitions, as home brewed with a group and worked with Derek Markel, and professionally brewed with Sign of the Horse Brewing.

(Plus rumor is that they are Bengals fans… so I mean… right there they gotta be good folk right?! Can I get a Who Dey?!)

This is what we love about the small breweries. Seeing how much they support, impact, and help out communities. And knowing that your money is going to a family that loves what they do, and wants to give back to their community, want to grow in their craft, and support their family and friends.

Congratulations to Jesse and Amanda Mills, we cannot way to come back for Sworn Brewing Company’s opening – and many more times in the future after that.
