Javahead Stout by Troegs Independent Brewing on Halloween night

All the flavors of fall – Let’s do this!

Those cold nights and warm days are here. Leaves are changing colors, and I couldn’t be happier. It’s time to dig into the flavors of the fall and taste all the deliciousness. I love making big pots of stews in the fall. A fan favorite is Chili! You normally can find some chili cook off events. Here is the beer that would pair well the best. And we are first going to talk about some spicy chili. The kind that burns a bit. It is going to pair well with stouts, porters, and amber ales. It’s the perfect time of year for this.

Its Stout Season Now

I’m a sucker for an amber ale but I just had the most amazing stout.  There have been 2 times recently we have gotten to taste the Mari by Ever Grain Brewing Company.  It comes in at a whopping 14.6% ABV according to Untapped.  It has a 4.26 overall rating and it is described as “a rich and decadent stout aged in a variety of bourbon barrels for over 16 months.  We then conditioned it with behemoth amounts of coconut, cocoa nibs, vanilla and for a little added joy, toasted almonds.”  The balance of flavors would be crazy but they would complement each other beautifully.

Then if you prefer your chili on the milder side, you want to go with a more mild beer; something like a cream ale, amber lager, or honey beer. We most recently had the “Kenya Dig it” from Bald Birds Brewing.  (Kenya Dig it was a coffee cream ale we got a full pint of, along with Ben’s flight. On Ben’s flight we had two delicious stouts – Birds Reserve and Grand Bald Eagle.) It paired so nicely with the delicious pulled pork over fries when we visited last month.

But this will similarly go with another meaty dish.  If the focus is on the beef instead of the spice this will be a dream combo!  Kenya Dig It is a coffee cream ale, always an interesting combination. The Untappd description for it is: “Our second collaboration with Valerio Coffee Roasters, we chose a smooth, refreshing Cream Ale as a launchpad for their light-roast Kenya AA coffee. Expect the familiar crushable Cream Ale crispness, with a mellow aroma and extra kick from the coffee.” The coffee cream ale has a 3.78 Untappd rating and is 5% ABV.

There is also the Dig It cream ale by Bald Birds Brewing as well.

Dig it is described as Light, mellow, and smooth, our cream ale is superbly refreshing.  Brewed with American 2 row Barley, American ale yeast, and hops from the Pacific Northwest, Dig it! Is the perfect anytime beverage. According to Untapped it is a 4.5% ABV and has a low overall rating of 3.13.

These fall days remind me of my grandma’s homemade chicken corn soup.  I mean the kind with the homemade rivals.  I’ve tried to duplicate it, she did it perfectly.  Also, lots of places, especially churches, have the good homemade chicken corn soup.  Make sure to take some home to pair it with an Amber ale or an IPA.

So like I said, I am a sucker for an amber ale.  I can’t resist the 409 by Moo Duck Brewery.  This brew is a nice smooth amber that compliments the flavors of a chicken corn soup perfectly.  It might feel a bit heavy if you are enjoying a chicken corn soup with those homemade rivals.  It’s the homemade rivals I can’t duplicate from my grandma’s recipe.  The 409 is described on Untapped as “A tribute to the famous PSU football coach and his 409 victories.  Featuring victory malt, the bready malt character is blended nicely with just the right amount of hops.”  409 is at a manageable 5.5% ABV.

Now onto my favorite; pumpkin roll.  I’ve loved pumpkin roll since a friend’s mom used to bake pumpkin logs every Thanksgiving and Christmas.  I really miss those pumpkin rolls.  I missed them so much I found an older woman to bakes them out of her home.  She also wins me over with chocolate PB rolls, red velvet rolls and fruited ones too.  But I love sticking to a classic pumpkin roll.  We picked up a Fiddlehead Imperial IPA when we were traveling through Ithaca NY at a gas station.  This reminded us of the tall boys we see back home from Troegs and Voodoo Ranger.

The sweetness of the pumpkin roll will balance well with the hoppiness of the Fiddlehead.  It is a sneaky 9% ABV but wonderful to relax with any sweet desert at the end of your day.

The Hershey Bears and Ever Grain Brewing announced today that they are teaming up to make Bear Claw Pale Lager. The lager will be sold in 19.2 oz cans at the GIANT Center at all of the home games of the Hershey Bears for the 2023 – 2024 season.

Bear Claw Pale Lager is a 5.5% ABV lager brewed by Ever Grain Brewing Company and is a limited release and will be sold at only the GIANT Center at all of their alcohol stands.

The Bears Den (part of the Hershey Lodge) as well as The Chocolatier (part of Hershey Park) will also sell it on draft.

The 2023 Calder Cup Champion Hershey Bears are pleased to announce in collaboration with Ever Grain Brewing Company the launch of Bear Claw Pale Lager.

Brewed with the choicest malts, Bear Claw Pale Lager is the new go-to for your game-time beverage. It contains a significant flavor of noble varieties, moderate bitterness, and is backed by a solid malt body and sweet notes from an all-malt base. The result is a cold, crisp, and refreshing beverage, just like the start of hockey season.

Bear Claw Pale Lager will be available at GIANT Center in 19.2 oz cans in time for the Bears 2023-24 home opener on Saturday, Oct. 14 vs. the Belleville Senators at any location where canned beverages are sold. Please note: all alcohol must be consumed on property as fans cannot take full, unopened, or partially consumed cans out of GIANT Center as souvenirs. The Chocolatier and Bears’ Den restaurants will also have Bear Claw Pale Lager available on draft. 

The 5.5% ABV beverage is a limited-time release. The artwork for the cans is highlighted by the face of a roaring bear. The bottom of the can is encircled with 12 shields containing each season in which the Bears won the Calder Cup, the most of any team in the history of the American Hockey League.

A map of the Mechanicsburg (and surrounding) Area breweries.

Mechanicsburg Area Breweries

There are a lot of fantastic breweries in the Mechanicsburg area! And with the addition of Sworn Brewing – that list is only growing!

Here is Google Directions to take you from the greater Mechanicsburg area breweries (starting at Ever Grain Brewing Company): Google Maps – Greater Mechanicsburg Area Breweries. These directions will take you from Ever Grain Brewing Company to Mellow Mink Brewery to LoveDraft’s Brew Co to Appalachian Brewing Company (Mechanicsburg) to High Road Taproom to Sworn Brewing to Wolf Brewing to Hemauer Brewing and then ending at Marzoni’s Brick Over Pizza and Brewery and Isaac’s Craft Kitchen and Brewery. Total driving time is 53 minutes (at time of making the map). 16.3 miles of driving total.

Breweries with the ‘beer mug’ are located in Mechanicsburg (although Ever Grain is listed as a Camp Hill location, it is just two blocks away from Mellow Mink which has a Mechanicsburg address, and Grateful Goat which is further east than both, also has a Mechanicsburg address – so I have included Ever Grain Brewing in with the Mechanicsburg breweries). Also included are breweries in very near by surrounding (West Shore) areas – such as Enola, Lemoyne, Camp Hill, etc.

The yellow pins are those without a Mechanicsburg address (not including Ever Grain which I placed in with the Mechanicsburg locations) – it also includes the Farmers Market (West Shore Farmers Market) which has a GearHouse Brewing stand.

A late addition to the list is Cold Springs Brewery; which has a Mechanicsburg address despite being south of Shepherdstown. (I was tempted to give this a separate pin color, but decided against it due to having a Mechanicsburg location still, and because it would be the only one of that nature).

How to Use the Map

You can zoom in, and click on each of the beer mugs with the paw prints on them to see the breweries. This will call up their address via Google Maps, as well as any other information they have supplied to Google (phone numbers, websites, etc.). You can also save this map to your Google Maps so when you call up Google Maps these locations will be pinned onto your map as an overlay.

Standing Out on the Shelf

In a sea of standard 12-ounce and 16-ounce cans, 19.2-ounce cans make an immediate impression. Their towering presence on store shelves demands attention. Craft breweries understand the importance of catching consumers’ eyes, and these distinctive cans do just that.

The 19.2 oz cans are especially visually more appealing in the small store fridges at gas station convenience stores like Sheetz, Rutters, WaWas, etc. In Central PA you can find a host of craft beers like New Trails’ Broken Heels and Double Broken Heels, Troegs’ Perpetual IPA and Sunshine Pilsner, and you can also find some AB InBev owned craft breweries beers like Goose Island’s Neon Beer Hug and Tropical Beer Hug; as well as some lower quality beers like Natty Daddy’s and the Steel Reserves.

Perceived Premium Quality

Craft beer enthusiasts appreciate the finer details of their favorite brews. The larger size of 19.2-ounce cans can create a perception of premium quality. Craft breweries often use these cans to signal that their beer is something special, worthy of the discerning palate.

There is a growing trend of using the 19.2 oz cans for shelf space too for craft breweries and how this sets them apart and adds to the prestige of the cans. Why get a 16 oz can when you can get a 19.2 oz can for just a little bit more. The can size isn’t done by all breweries – so those who do use the 19.2 oz cans – it gives them more visibility, more perceived notoriety, and it looks as if their a bigger, more established brewery due to all of the choices they offer.

A Canvas for Branding and Artwork

Craft beer is as much about the story and art on the can as it is about what’s inside. The extra real estate on a 19.2-ounce can allows breweries to showcase their branding, tell their unique story, and captivate consumers with stunning label designs. It’s a marketing opportunity that’s too good to pass up.

Serving Flexibility

Some beer styles, particularly those with higher alcohol content, benefit from larger serving sizes. The 19.2-ounce cans provide the perfect middle ground. They allow brewers to package stronger beers without pushing the alcohol content too far for a single serving.

Troegs Independent Craft Brewing offer three of their flagship beers in the 19.2 oz cans: Perpetual IPA, Sunshine Pilsner, and the Troegenator. Perpetual IPA is a 7.5% ABV, Sunshine Pilsner is a 5.3% ABV, and Troegenator is a 8.2% ABV.

Convenience on the Go

Craft beer is meant to be enjoyed anywhere, from picnics to outdoor festivals. The 19.2-ounce cans strike a balance between portability and quantity. They’re the ideal choice for those moments when a 12-ounce can just won’t cut it, but a full 22-ounce bomber feels excessive.

At the Hershey Park Stadium for concerts, as well as at the Hollywood Casino concert series in Grantville – the 19.2 oz cans of Sunshine Pilsner and Perpetual IPA are amongst their best sellers.

A Responsible Choice

Beyond convenience, 19.2-ounce cans offer environmental benefits. They’re lighter than glass bottles, reducing transportation costs and carbon footprints. Craft breweries often emphasize sustainability, and these cans align with those principles.

19.2 oz cans can also help save on packaging, space, and for some drinkers limits them to less drinking. Rather than drinking two beers (either 12 oz or 16 oz – which would be 24 ounces or 32 ounces in total) they might drink just one of these ‘stovepipes’ and thus only drink 19.2 ounces rather than drinking more.

Even some smaller craft breweries are offering this as their to go canned beer rather than crowlers or the glass growlers.

It’s that time of night.  What snack can I get into?  The leftover popcorn from Martiza’s new shop’s grand opening celebration.  I decided to pair my snack with an Ever Grain favorite, Minimum Security Hazy New England, IPA.  It weighs in with a 6.8% ABV and an overall Untapped rating of 4.05.  It goes perfect with the leftover popcorn.

Maritza’s House of Style – Grand Opening

My big sister Maritza DeJesus Patterson was celebrating the opening of her new hair salon with all her clients and supporters as she fought to keep her business in Hummelstown the past 3 years.  The entire newly remodeled and opened hair salon was packed as well as the surrounding yard and sidewalk. 

The backyard of 400 East Main Street is filled with tables of snacks, balloons and fun stuff for the kids.  The driveway is taken up by the trailer from Sweet Dawgs serving up ice cream to party goers.  Inside you find free raffles to enter, cupcakes, cookies and waters. 

I sip my hazy but light IPA as I recall my May 11 hair appointment with Maritza at the old shop.  The dye was in the hair and we had full on started chatting away.  All of the sudden we heard a loud bang.  It was a car accident right outside the shop.  Without even thinking Martiza and Liz both sprint across the street to check on both cars involved in the accident.  They stay on the scene until emergency personal arrive to assess the situation.  Liz comforting a hysterical driver and Maritza clearing the road for traffic to continue to move.

I took a moment and looked around, even peaking my head outside the shop covered in dye, and dozens of people gawking.  I’ve been involved in accidents several times before, not that many stop to check on you.  Maritza will always check on you.  Always.

Beer and Snacks

I polish off my pop corn and dive into the cookie from Maritza’s too.  It helps settle the rest of the delicious IPA.  Minimum Security is described on Untapped as a full bodied hazy IPA, dry hopped with Chinook, Simcoe, and a touch of Citra.  Flavors and aromas of mango, and orange creamsicle with a soft finish.

As I’m reminiscing about Maritza’s old shop I remember it felt like cheers.  And I chuckled thinking about running into my first grade teacher, Mrs. McGarvey, who also gets her hair done at Maritza’s.  Maritza managed to move her own ‘Cheers’ to her new shop. 

I’m all out of snacks and I’m out of beer.

He’s the kind of guy that hates the spotlight on him.  Which is why only lately do you see pics of him since I’m taking them.  Odds are he might try to edit some of this out.  But he deserves to be celebrated and I wish I could give him the world.  You see, over 2 years ago my world came tumbling down all around me.  It was him and writing that felt like I was brought back. So tonight, on his birthday, I’m writing about an Ever Grain beer and pairing with a yummy cupcake.  It’s not technically a birthday cupcake but more delicious. Ever Grain’s Metal Tree and homemade apple cupcakes with salted caramel frosting are on tonight’s treat list.  I mean this is starting to feel like my birthday with such a special treat.  I mean mine was just 5 days ago but still, I’ll play glutton just this week. (We Can’t Always Be a Glutton Right? – Perfect Portions and Allusion Brewing Company.)

Metal Tree

Metal Tree is described as a Pale Ale -New England/Hazy.  On untapped it is described in detail as a “Straw or deep gold in color, this style has a varying degree of cloudiness.  Starch, yeast, hop, protein and/or other compounds contribute to a wide range of hazy appearances within this style.  There is a perceived silky or full mouthfeel that may contribute to the overall flavor profile.  Grist may include a small amount of oat, wheat or other adjuncts to promote haziness.  Descriptors such as “juicy” are often used to describe the taste and hop-derived aroma attributes present in these beers.”

Metal tree comes in with a 5.2% ABV but to me I definitely thought this one was a higher ABV.  I think it is the pale ale style combined with the yummy hazy taste.  It pairs perfectly with the forgotten other autumn time favorite, apple.  This apple cupcake with salted caramel icing pairs perfectly with the lightness of a pale ale but finishes with the hazy taste.  I think it’s that exact combo that makes Metal tree just taste and feel that damn smooth.

MT has an untapped overall rating of 3.95 but with overall good comments I’m surprised the rating is low.  One check in says “Not sure why this isn’t rated higher but it is delicious!  All the flavor or a full ipa and half the ABV.  One of my favorite pale ales.”  I think it is the depth of flavor in this pale ale that fools me into thinking I’m going to get hammered with a DIPA.

These apple cupcakes were made by a coworker of Ben’s to celebrate their birthday.  I’d like to say I’d seek out the recipe but I despise baking.  I’m more an eyeball and never measure anything kind of cook.  I sure hope this coworker of his like cooking and baking often. 

 Happy Birthday Benjamin!  You inspired me to start writing again and supported me when I struggled after having Scarlet.  You are an amazing father and funny as hell, not like a clown though.  Let’s save one of these Metal Trees to drink on our next hike, another inspiration you passed on to me.  Love Amy

Clusterduck (with Strawberries) by Ever Grain Brewing Company

Ok, It’s been warm enough here in Central PA and we are past the peak of summer solstice; what is your summer beer go to?  I picked up this Clusterduck (with strawberries) by Ever Grain Brewing Company with the thought of drinking this on the back porch after a summer rain.  It rained and stormed, or at least the part of town we were in it did, so I thought It was time to crack this open. 

According to Untapped Clusterduck with Strawberry is a 7% IPA -other.  It comes with a 3.86 rating which is low for the quality of beer Clusterduck gives you. 

I mean we have a 1.0 rating and the description is “I’m still not an IPA chick…that cleaner taste.”  These ratings should, in no way, indicate the quality of this fruited IPA.  Also, I know a lot of us are spoiled with the double and the tripled IPA but this just tone it down a bit.  A nice 7% fruited IPA is perfect on the back porch, while the baby finally went to sleep, and a light IPA can help you handle the rest of your Sunday evening.  There was a tad of sediment on the bottom of the can, but this can be expected with a fruited beer.  Let’s be honest, we expect this with no qualms when it’s our favorite fruited sour. 

Popular Summer Beers

According to a MyBartender.com article – 30 most popular summer beers on the market – my ol’ favorite summer, go to, Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy makes that list. In this same article it describes the summer Shandy as the perfect companion for a barbeque or any other summer time occasion.  A barbeque beer is exactly what I think of when I think of a summer beer. 

But obviously we want to suggest some local beers to our readers so here it goes:  Boneshire Brew Works normally comes out with a “Hippo” series of fruit beers during the summer. Pink Hippo, Summer Hippo, Blue Hippo, Red Hippo and a Fall Hippo.  Pink Hippo had strawberries, Summer Hippo had peaches and mangos, Blue Hippo had blueberries, and Red Hippo had raspberries.  

Troegs Independent Craft Brewing has both Sunshine Pils and Nimble Giant we’d recommend as a summer beer.  Sunshine Pils is a nice and light Pilsner and Nimble Giant is a double New England IPA with a summer release.  Tattered Flag comes in with the “Basic Dad Pilsner” and again, its a nice and light Pilsner to enjoy on a warm and humid summer evening.  Then Moo Duck has their summer beer with the “Big Sit Summer Ale”.  Please don’t hesitate to let us know your favorite summer beer go to! Missile Toad

When this tasty season treat came out last year when we were all stir crazy from quarantine I went on a long, long adventure with my friend the Missile Toad. I am normally not a fan of the grapefruit notes in my beer, but this triple IPA holds up with a high ABV, very light straw color and a not so boozy taste.

Untappd Description: “Seasons greetings from a hop rocket of holiday happiness. Exploding with juiciness, this hazy Imperial IPA combines citrus notes with a soft piney finish. It’s like a tropical vacation in the middle of winter.”

The tropical vacation we all wish we should go on.  Ah yes, the part of the holiday season I look forward to, holiday beer releases.  They don’t all provide a high ABV and the MT will quickly sneak up on you. 

That first sniff is a wonderful citrusy aroma.  The Citrus flavors in this TIPA carry on and linger but are not overpowering.  Just when you think that is about all this beer has to offer the light pine taste comes in and you glide down to a soft landing that combines this subtle tropical citrus taste and somehow delightfully pine taste

I first tasted this one a year ago before reading the description.  A pine and a citrus flavor description beforehand would have given my taste buds a SCARE.  The light tropical flavor with an aroma of a citrus sleigh ride bring back that thrill of getting your first crate of grapefruit or oranges over the holiday season.  It didn’t matter if you ate them until your mouth was raw, that fresh citrus flavor was unmatched and you craved it.

The pine flavor.  I thought I would hate it.  Right away I envisioned picking pine needles out of my teeth, maybe a slight sticky sap feeling crossed my mind too. “little full, lotta sap”

This is the magic of drinking a well brewed beer.  The flavor and aroma you end with brought back some of the first memories of rounding the corner to dive into your pile of presents on Christmas morning.  That thrill of making sure your siblings were in-tow when you raced to the tree and that light pine scent danced around you as you believed in the magic of Christmas.  But as an adult, I also believe in the magic of holiday beer releases.

In case anyone is looking for a Christmas present for me, I wear a size – 4pack of Missile Toad!

We’re down to the final six breweries / competitors in the most arbitrary March Madness tournament possibly in beer (and maybe even writing) history. Like the previous Round (Round Three) the first segment will be going over the results of the previous round, and then we’ll be getting into the actual voting.
