The Craft Beer Conundrum: Navigating the Troubled Waters of the Craft Beer Industry

The craft beer industry, once a beacon of innovation and camaraderie, is navigating through its most challenging era. A perfect storm of economic pressures, changing consumer behaviors, and internal industry dynamics has led to a state of uncertainty. This blog post delves into the multifaceted troubles facing the craft beer sector and explores potential paths forward for these beloved breweries.

The Hurdles on the Horizon

Economic Pressures: The economic landscape for craft brewers has become increasingly perilous. Rising costs of raw materials, such as hops and barley, coupled with the inflationary pressures on equipment and utilities, have squeezed margins to their breaking point. Additionally, the craft beer market is not immune to the broader economic downturns, which can dampen consumer spending on premium beverage options.

Market Saturation: The explosive growth of craft breweries over the past decade has been a double-edged sword. While it has led to a rich diversity of options for consumers, it has also resulted in a crowded marketplace. With over 9,000 craft breweries in the United States alone, according to the Brewers Association, competition for tap and shelf space has become fierce, making it difficult for smaller operations to gain or maintain visibility.

Changing Consumer Trends: The preferences of beer drinkers are in constant flux, and staying ahead of these trends is a monumental task. Distribution Challenges: For many small to mid-sized craft breweries, the distribution landscape presents a significant barrier to growth. The three-tier distribution system in the U.S., while beneficial in some respects, can also limit a brewery’s ability to expand its reach. Furthermore, the dominance of large beverage conglomerates within this system can stifle the visibility of craft brands on a national or global scale.

Charting a Course Through Troubled Waters

Is the craft beer bubble bursting?

Despite these challenges, all is not lost for the craft beer industry. There are several strategies that breweries can adopt to navigate through these turbulent times:

Innovation with Intent: While innovation is key to capturing consumer interest, breweries must approach it with a strategic mindset. This means not just chasing trends but creating unique, high-quality products that align with their brand identity and values. Collaborations with other breweries or local businesses can also offer new and exciting products to consumers while sharing the burden of innovation.

Community Engagement: Craft breweries have always been more than just places to drink beer; they are community hubs. Strengthening ties with local communities through events, partnerships, and sustainability initiatives can enhance brand loyalty and create a dedicated customer base that values more than just the product.

Diversification: Expanding product lines to include options like non-alcoholic beers, hard seltzers, or even craft spirits can help breweries tap into new markets and consumer segments. Additionally, exploring alternative revenue streams, such as merchandise, subscription services, or on-site experiences, can provide financial cushioning.

Lean Operations: In times of economic uncertainty, operational efficiency becomes paramount. Breweries can look into more sustainable practices, not only as a cost-saving measure but also as a marketing point, given the growing consumer interest in sustainable and ethically produced goods.

The Craft Beer Community’s Collective Strength

The craft beer industry’s greatest asset in these challenging times is its sense of community and shared passion. By supporting one another through collaborations and shared resources, and by engaging actively with their local and global communities, craft breweries can weather this storm. The path ahead is undoubtedly fraught with challenges, but the craft beer industry is no stranger to overcoming obstacles. Through resilience, innovation, and community engagement, the craft beer industry can emerge from these troubled waters stronger and more unified than ever.

Closings vs Openings

By one report – in Pennsylvania – 26 breweries opened in 2023, where as 23 closed. Some are listing 43 locations opening; but this would include side projects, tap rooms, and “Fresh Market Pop Ups” and similar spaces. Ok, my Pennsylvania Dutch is about to come out a little bit.  Pork and Sauerkraut on New Year’s Day is a tradition in my family.  Served with mashed potatoes of course!  I know, I know, sometimes the sauerkraut isn’t so pleasant.  My mom perfected the recipe to take out quite a bit of the tartness and sourness.  We always cut up an apple to put in the sauerkraut, to give it a little sweetness.  Also sautéing some onions and searing the pork in the sautéed onions.  Mix those sautéed onions in with the sauerkraut.

Then roast the pork in the sauerkraut to cook it through in the oven.

I’m at a bit of a cross roads when it comes to pairing a beer with this yearly meal.  I think a very malty and sweet hefeweizen will pair nicely with the palate cleansing of the sauerkraut.  I’d reach for a Level Up Hefeweizen by Idiom Brewing Company.  Level Up comes in at a 3.79 overall rating on untapped.  It has a 5.6% ABV, just like a good Hefeweizen should!  It is described on Untapped as “Brewed with 60% malted white wheat and a touch of honey malt, then fermented to provide a balanced profile that sits squarely between clove and banana.  Super smooth, super creamy with a bready finish and light bitterness”

When you are enjoying that pork and sauerkraut dinner pair it with a hefeweizen if you are still afraid of the sour or tartness of the sauerkraut. Then when I go for seconds I will pair it with a good sturdy stout.  A strong stout is usually what you would reach for to compliment a nice pork dinner.  I’d grab a Wookies and Cream Oatmeal stout from Tall Tails Brewing Company.

Wookies and Cream comes in on Untapped with a 3.77 overall rating.  It has a 6.11% ABV and is given a rather.  This stout is so smooth it is dangerous.  It will go down even smoother with a delicious pork dinner.

Despite several (numerous?) closings in 2023, there was some openings and expansions in the Keystone State. So despite the closings, its best to look on the bright side, and to see all of the openings of the year.

Its that time again, we’re at the end of the year (of 2023), and its time to take a look back on the year and see all the various statistics that come out across the industry.

Untappd is a treasure trove of statistics (on the consumer side of things), so lets start taking a look at their statistical breakdowns for the end of the year 2023.

Just moments ago Cox Brewing Company (CBC) made the unfortunate announcement – that their brewery will be closing at the end of 2023. Just twenty minutes ago on Facebook they posted a “Brewery News” update, stating that December 31st, 2023 will be their last day.

This is the second veteran owned brewery to be closing in the Central Pennsylvania area (with Tattered Flag closing in Middletown, Dauphin County).

Cox Brewing Company has been brewing for over eight years in the Rheems / Elizabethtown area of Central Pennsylvania. A huge proponent of home brewers, always offering assistance, as well as running events and local home brew meet ups, as well as participating in the Lititz Brewfest with giving prizes to home brewers.

Their closure will be felt in the brewing community as well as the home brewing community. A staple at many Central PA brewfests – like the Reinaissance Faire Brewfest at Mount Hope, at the Autos and Ales Brewfest in Hershey, the brand new Hershey Brewfest, the Fort Hunter Brewfest, the Lititz Brewfest, the old Lancaster Brewfest, and many more.

The Announcement

At 9:33 PM on 10.11.23, Cox Brewing Company posted the following on Facebook:

After running this family business for 8.5 years, we’ve decided that December 31, 2023, will be the last day we are open. With the rising cost of goods and services coupled with a 2024 military deployment, it’s time to let go.

Our families are incredibly proud of what we’ve been able to build together for the members of this community – we know it is more than just a place to drink craft beer. Our garage is sacred ground, and this decision was not easy for us.

We have watched love grow here and friendships develop; we also lost friends who were like family, and miss them. It has always been our priority to make the garage comfortable for our Veterans and first responders.

We dedicate these last three months to our loyal customers. We are grateful (especially during the shutdowns) for your support, showing up, and choosing Cox Brewing Company.

So, some good news…

Wednesdays are back, we have a lot of beer to drink, and the parties and events will continue! So come over, get some pints, visit with the BEST brewery staff in this business, and help us finish strong! We will not go gentle into that good night. We’ll see you at the garage.

Cox Brewing Company

Cox Brewing Company was one of our absolute favorite stops and breweries. I’ve gotten to meet so many great people there and at the many different hang outs and parties at both the Rheems location as well as their Elizabethtown location next to the Pizza shop.

I will miss sitting with Ron Bell and others and listening to great stories and getting home brew advice.

Amy also enjoyed the location as well, and we had a tremendous time recently when we had brought Scarlet along.

I wish nothing but the best for Nick and Tim and hope the deployment is safe, and wish them the best in their future endeavors. Hopefully only good and better things to come from them, the area, the brewers of the area, as well as so much more. We know this decision couldn’t have been easy and I’m sure it was a fraught and tough decision.

The Beer Thrillers are Joining the Hops and Vines for Hunger Cause

As you might have seen on the Hops and Vines for Hunger Facebook and / or Instagram pages today – The Beer Thrillers have joined their cause.

As we covered in our previous article – Hops and Vines for Hunger (2023) – Hops and Vines for Hunger reached out to us letting us know this year they were actively trying to get bloggers, content creators, and influencers to join the cause – alongside breweries, wineries, and distilleries.

Hops and Vines for Hunger

The campaign aims to:

• Raise funds to maximize the work of Feeding Pennsylvania’s nine member food banks and serve Pennsylvanians facing hunger
• Support the development of nutrition education resources created by PA Eats to educate food-insecure Pennsylvanians on how to prepare simple, accessible meals with affordable, healthy ingredients commonly found in food pantries
• Promote the support of local breweries and wineries across the Commonwealth

This is a month long fundraiser in November and they have been doing it yearly now for a few years.

Registration is now closed for new members to join adding their name to the cause – but you can still help. You can donate through the numerous breweries, wineries, distilleries, bloggers, content creators, YouTubers, and Influencers who have joined this great cause.

We will be writing several articles promoting various breweries and their contributions and programs to raise money for the Hops and Vines for Hunger program and cause – as well as thinking and finding ways of our own to participate and donate to the cause.

A Look Into the Future

Let’s take a look into the future and see what the crystal ball sees. Its the start of a new year and with that comes ideas of what the future might hold. People start resolutions (and quickly drop them), people try new habits, people (the horror… the horror…) do “Dry January”, people work out more (for a week or so), etc.

Every year its a time of reevaluation, looking at the past – in this case the year of 2022 – and looking into the future – 2023 and beyond. Seeing what the new trends will be, and having interviews and articles like this let us take a gauge of all of that. It also then lets us look back at the end of the next year to see what we got right, what we got wrong, and why. Its a great launching point for speculation and thought, as well as serving as a great look back and retrospective and way to see the changes in trends, in the business, in brewing and craft beer in general.

Tyler Budwash – co owner of the Pilger Ruh Brewing Company out of Pottsvillle Pennsylvania, was nice enough to reach out to me with his chats and interviews with some of his friends and co – workers in the industry. He chatted with the brewers from Robin Hood Brewing Company, Bright Path Brewing Company, Mount Gretna Craft Brewery, Copperz Brewing Company, as well as the labelist and artist for Rotunda Brewing Company, and they all graciously allowed us to share their thoughts on 2023 and beyond.

I want to say thank you to all involved for this. I will make sure to thank you each individually at the end of the article. Robin Hood Brewing Company

Caleb Peachy is the head brewer of Robin Hood Brewing Company. As per Untappd, they are a Brew Pub out of Bellefonte, Pennsylvania. They have 212 unique beers with over 33,000 ratings and a global average rating of 3.7 (as of 1.4.23). Their Untappd description reads: “Robin Hood Brewing Co. is a small-batch brewpub in Bellefonte, PA specializing in IPA’s and high quality experimental brews.”

When asked about future trends, Caleb Peachy said:

I think we will still see the trendy beers continue to be king. Such as the hazy IPA’s and fruited sours. But I do think we will start to see some fatigue with the hazy’s. Instead of having all IPA’s on tap, taprooms are going to need to have a variety. We will also continue to see breweries push creativity with what can be put into beers. I’d personally like to see more west coast IPA’s and easy drinking lagers become popular throughout the year. Nothing beats a crispi boi anytime of the year.

Pilger Ruh Brewing Company

Tyler Budwash is the co – owner of Pilger Ruh Brewing Company. According to Untappd they are a nano brewery out of Pottsville, Pennsylvania. They have 159 unique beers and over 6,000 ratings with a global average rating of 3.87 (as of 1.4.23). Their Untappd description reads: “Community Crafted Nano Brewery in Pottsville PA with 12 rotating taps, local wine, spirits, and cocktails. Beer to go available. Ask about our food menu!”

I’m not sure how the conversation went, but I like to think Tyler Budwash asked himself out loud what his thoughts were going to be on the trends of 2023. This is what he had to say:

Well let’s start with saying, I don’t think hazy IPAs, fruited sours, pastry stouts, or seltzers are going anywhere and we can officially say lagers are “back”. So in 2023 I think we will continue to see more approachable beers hit taps, as in lower abv and more of the classic styles returning. I’d personally like to see more milds.

Bright Path Brewing

Alex Franco is co – owner and brewer at Bright Path Brewing Company. According to Untappd they are a micro brewery from Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania. They have 20 unique beers and 2,900 ratings with a global average rating of 3.7 (as of 1.4.23). Their Untappd description reads: “Small craft brewery located in Jim Thorpe, PA focusing on lagers and session ales.”

Tyler Budwash asked Alex Franco what he foresees in 2023, and this was his response:

For 2023 I think lagers continue to grow but I hope that beer drinkers catch up to brewers. Hazy IPAs are everywhere and hard to distinguish between most of them so I hope beer drinkers start to see the wide array of beer styles and branch out to try different things.

Mount Gretna Craft Brewery

Brad Moyer is the brewer of Mount Gretna Craft Brewery. According to Untappd they are a micro brewery from Palmyra, Pennsylvania. They have 193 unique beers with a total of 19,000 ratings and a global average rating of 3.64 (as of 1.4.23). Their Untappd description reads: “Hand-crafted beer inspired by a place where people share culture, art and ideas amid the lakes, trails and forest – historic Mount Gretna.”

When asked by Tyler Budwash what he saw coming in 2023, Brad Moyer said:

I think the thing I see most coming is diversification of Beer styles there’s been a lot of breweries recently, who hang their hat on 1 to 2 styles and that’s all they do. Now I’m not saying that they don’t do them well , it’s just people are demanding more these days and we are seeing a resurgence of lots of lagers and other styles that were one time not so sexy to brew. In a market where there is literally a brewery every 5 to 10 miles you have to be doing something that sets yourself apart and if you hang your hat only on, let’s say hazy IPA people will come but ultimately will want different choices and venture up the road.

Rotunda Brewing Company

Stevie Glick is the artist and can labelist for all of the beautiful can art you see from Rotunda Brewing Company. Their logos, artwork, and can labels adorn their social media and their promotional material as well as both brewery locations (the brewery and restaurant in Annville and the brew pub in Hershey). Rotunda Brewing Company is a micro brewery out of Annville Pennsylvania with 458 unique beers, 83,000 ratings and a global average rating of 3.94 (as of 1.4.23) according to Untappd. Their Untappd description reads: “Stop by at 11am on Saturdays to get your RBC 32 oz Crowlers TO GO! Quantities are limited and go fast! We are conveniently located at 245 West Main Street, Annville PA. Parking is available in the back. Call us today with any questions as we have a very knowledgeable staff on hand that can handle any beer questions you may have!”

When confronted by Tyler Budwash and asked about the future, this is what Stevie Glick had to say:

I don’t see much changing at all honesty.
Maybe everyone fine tuning their skills with heavily fruited sours.
We’re adding nitrogen to a lot of things – especially the Swheat Tart series 

I most definitely see the bigger craft brewing company’s from the surrounding states are either setting up shop in PA or are finally getting some stretch with distro into their surrounding states. 

Covid brought us Aslin Brewing Company, Trillium Brewing Company, and Other Half Brewing; and that’s amazing but may also bring the little breweries competition selling out of six pack shops. 

I’m hoping to see more collaborations between little brewing companies and bigger ones. 

And lastly. no one’s ever going to stop trying to push the boundaries of what should or could be in beer or what can be made from it – so who knows maybe a new unique style may pop out again that no one thought of.

Copperz Brewing Company

Justin Kershner is the brewer for Copperz Brewing Company, a brew pub out of Hamburg Pennsylvania. Ha, I wish I knew where it was heading. That’s kinda the fun part right? We don’t know. Just gotta roll with it.

And the Brewery Count Goes Up

So good to start off the new year with good news. And few things are better than announcing a new brewery is in the works.

The Waynesboro brewing scene is picking up. Announcing today on Facebook that they have secured a building is Old Soul Brewing. They will be located at: 2 South Mulberry Street, Waynesboro, PA, United States, Pennsylvania. The building is currently the Nu – Way Cleaners (a former dry cleaner business in Waynesboro).

Obviously not much is known at this time of their announcement, but we are definitely keeping them on the radar.

Happy new year! The new year brings exciting news for us! Big thanks to Mike and Sharon from Iron Valley Real Estate of Central PA Carlisle Office for finding a home for our project!

Clean out is well underway! Working on drawings and permits to start the buildout. We’re looking to open mid summer this year if all goes well.

AJ Brechbiel

Longtime readers of the blog here will recognize the name of AJ Brechbiel. He has written a few articles for us, and been longtime friends of the blog. Thanks for reading everyone, and I hope everyone has a wonderful New Year’s. Hopefully you didn’t tie one on too much last night at your New Years Eve parties… maybe didn’t go straight for all the barleywines or 14% pastry stouts? Maybe chilled and settled for a few pilsners and lagers? Here at The Beer Thrillers HQ we had a a pretty slow day. I had to do some housework, getting a room finished painting, and had to do some computer training for my work. I finished two books to hit my 2022 Book Challenge goal of 110 books.

Scarlet, Amy and I, just stayed inside for New Years Eve, and today – New Years Day – I worked. But its so good to come home to this great news. And fills me with much hope for the 2023 year! I can’t wait to get at it!
