Tattered Flag Brewery and Distillery in Middletown, PA

Tattered Flag Brewery & Still Works Sold to California-Based Tower Investments: A New Chapter for Middletown’s Historic Brewery

The beloved Tattered Flag Brewery & Still Works, a (former) staple of Middletown’s craft beer and spirits scene, has officially changed hands. California-based Tower Investments, operating locally as Middletown South Union Street, LLC, has purchased the historic property at 1 S. Union Street, according to Dauphin County deed records. This sale marks a significant moment for the community, as Tattered Flag was more than just a brewery; it was a gathering spot that held a special place in the hearts of local craft beer enthusiasts.

July 28th, 2023 Tattered Flag Brewery and Distillery announced their closure. It was announced that it was for sale (and was actually up for sale before the announcement of its closure). (Tattered Flag Brewery and Distillery For Sale.) After a while of being unable to sell the business, Tattered Flag Brewery and Distillery Ended Up For Auction. They went on the auction block in May 2024.

According to Nik Sgagias of NAI CIR, Tower Investments is actively seeking tenants for the space, hinting at possible new beginnings for the 13,000-square-foot property. Tattered Flag, known for its veteran-owned roots and innovative brews, closed its doors on October 1, 2023, following a public auction in June. The auction had a starting bid of $275,000, highlighting the historic and commercial appeal of this full-service restaurant, brewery, and distillery space.

The story of Tattered Flag began in 2015 when military veteran Pat Devlin and friends from Susquenita High School took on the massive renovation of the former Elks building. They transformed the two-story structure, which previously held three storefronts and a meeting room, into a unique brewpub and distillery, blending community spirit with a passion for craft beer and cocktails.

Over the years, Tattered Flag expanded to various locations, including taprooms in Lancaster, Gettysburg, and Derry Township. Unfortunately, these expansions—coupled with challenges from the pandemic, inflation, and labor shortages—eventually led to financial strain, and the decision to close the business was made earlier this year. The original Middletown location, however, remained a cherished landmark for both locals and visitors.

While Tower Investments has yet to comment on future plans, the company’s focus on real estate development suggests the property will likely find new life soon. Tower is a family-owned company specializing in real estate investment and development, with experience transforming properties across the country.

As Middletown awaits the next chapter for this historic location, locals can look back fondly on the memories made at Tattered Flag Brewery & Still Works, and many of us will be watching to see what the future holds for this beloved space in the heart of our community.

Tattered Flag Brewery and Distillery is Now Up for Auction

The former site of Tattered Flag Brewery going up for auction; starting at $275,000.

According to a recent listing on Crexi, the former Tattered Flag Brewery at 1 South Union Street in Dauphin County will be auctioned on Monday, June 24. The bidding for this 13,000-square-foot space will start at $275,000.

This property includes a full-service restaurant with seating for up to 200 guests and is located just 2.5 miles from Harrisburg International Airport.

Interested bidders must register for the auction by clicking here or by contacting Nikolas Sgagias of NAI CIR for any inquiries.

The Tattered Flag Brewery, which opened in 2015, was renowned for its award-winning handcrafted beer, spirits, and cocktails. The business closed on Sunday, October 1.

Auction

With its distinctive big-city vibe and prime location in downtown Middletown, this must-see property offers an unparalleled investment opportunity.

-Auction Notice

For those eyeing a prime location to launch a restaurant or event space in Dauphin County, the former Tattered Flag Brewery & Still Works in Middletown presents a unique opportunity.

Initially listed for sale last summer, Tattered Flag was founded in 2015 by military veteran Pat Devlin and his high school friends from Susquenita. They transformed the former Elks building, a two-story structure with three storefronts and a meeting room, into a vibrant brewpub and distillery after extensive renovations.

The owners announced the closure last summer, attributing it to various challenges including rapid expansion, the pandemic, and the inflation/labor crisis.

The property is now up for auction as a short sale, meaning the mortgage lender is permitting the sale for less than what is owed. The 13,000-square-foot full-service restaurant, which seats about 200 guests, has a starting bid of $275,000. While the real estate is included in the auction, the brewery and distillery equipment will be sold separately, as noted by NAI CIR.

Tattered Flag was known for its diverse beer offerings, especially New England-style IPAs and sour beers. The distillery produced award-winning spirits including gin, vodka, and blue agave.

Over the years, Tattered Flag expanded with several satellite locations, including a briefly operated taproom in Derry Township, and additional outposts in Lancaster and Gettysburg.

Devil’s Eye Brewing Closings Its Doors on September 30th https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/09/21/devils-eye-brewing-closings-its-doors-on-september-30th/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=devils-eye-brewing-closings-its-doors-on-september-30th Thu, 21 Sep 2023 12:32:06 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=12484 Devil’s Eye Brewing is Closing Their Eye

Last night at 6:40 PM Devil’s Eye Brewing Company announced on their social media pages that they will be closing their doors on September 30th, 2023.

They are located in Dillsburg right on Route 15. They are 7 minutes and 2.5 miles from Big Bottom Brewery, as well as the Greystone Public House. Centralized on the main road through – Route 15 – in an old barn like structure.

They were known for their live music, ‘happening scene’, good food, and a place of great merriment and meet up in the Dillsburg area. A large venue with plenty of seating, space for the live music, and a busy bar. They served their community well.

Announcement

The following announcement was made on their Facebook page at 6:43 PM last night (9.20.23):

Four years ago we set out on a journey, never expecting we’d have to end it so soon. However, like so many others we can no longer continue to operate at our location in todays economy and have simply exhausted ourselves in every way. Our last day open will be September 30th, 2023…. We would love to see as many of you as we can by then!

With that being said, we’d like to thank all of our Devil’s Eye family (aka)staff for riding out every storm with us… There truly are no words that will ever fully express how much each of you will FOREVER mean to us, or how grateful we have been for your loyalty, and continued support ( You’ve all made the book we will write one day 😉) The road has been anything but easy, yet you stood with us and gave us a million percent day, after day. We have never enjoyed working beside anyone as much as we have each of you.

We’d also like to thank all of the amazing people we have had the pleasure of meeting, engaging with and getting to know. The customer support so many have shown over the years is truly humbling, and we can not say THANK YOU loud enough… and trust me… WE ARE LOUD!

At the end of the day, we started this journey with many goals in mind but, the change in this worlds compass altered those goals. Our # 1 goal however, still remains in tact and that is… We have NO regrets. Not one. We have learned from the good & the bad… During a time when the world was afraid, our futures uncertain… a dark cloud reigning over us all, it was those of us who engaged that brightened the path ahead. From the customers, to the community and it’s local business owners that we have tried to support as often as we could, from the incredible musicians we have met that have connected rooms full of people by speaking how the world was feeling with their talent and emotion, to those that brought them to us because they wanted to play, you’ve brightened our journey. There truly is no way to thank every one we have encountered enough. No matter what the encounter was, it taught us something incredible. And finally, we thank our families. Many of you have met some or all of our own families therefore, you will understand how important it is for us to say whole heartedly, without a single one of you…. We could NEVER have made it this far, nor would we have tried. Your support has been the most critical part of our accomplishments and we love you all, thank you for tolerating our crazy everything. You are the very best humans we know. For you we are blessed.

While we could go on and on about the incredible things we will take away from this journey… We will end it with this… When one door closes…. You kick open the next one … See y’all soon 😉

Devil’s Eye Brewing Company (Facebook Post)

By 6AM this morning (9.21.23), their post has already received over 450 reactions and 189 comments and nearly a hundred shares.

Closings, Condensing, Squeezing, Bubbles Bursting

Is the craft beer bubble bursting? Is the brewery industry condensing? Are more breweries closing? Yes, maybe, yes, no, who knows?

It certainly seems like we’re in a restructuring phase for craft beer as a whole. Breweries are closing more frequently right now, its not just a perceived thing, its a full thing. There is also a lot more buy – outs, mergers, and restructuring by breweries and with other breweries – including some of the big companies like AB InBev, etc.

Times are definitely changing. Economic situations are different than they were when the craft beer boom really hit, and then when the craft beer scene blew up years and years ago as well. Theres an ebb and flow to things, so it will be interesting how the next few years factor into things.

A lot of craft breweries are also at that ‘hump’ stage. The years four through seven are the make or break years for most businesses; and craft breweries are no exception. Most of the breweries we see closing in our area are in this window (having been opened in 2016 through 2018 or 2019). The COVID-19 / coronavirus didn’t help things for many of these businesses either, either speeding up their demise, or forcing them to change too drastically, or even hindering their initial openings.

We are seeing some breweries expanding – but they are fewer and fewer. Pennsylvania seems to have some new openings, some new expansions, but on the whole – its more negative (despite some spin doctors out there) with more breweries closing. Even bigger breweries are brewing less and selling less as well. Staple beers that have been industry favorites are under – performing on the markets this year and sitting on shelves longer, and even being returned from distributors.

We will most likely be doing a more comprehensive look at this near the end of the year. Stay tuned for that.

Dillsburg

Amy and I got to visit Devil’s Eye Brewing once; last year in February 2022. We did a trip through the Dillsburg area hitting Big Bottom Brewing and Devil’s Eye Brewing on our way through. We would like to wish the owners, staff, and loyal clientele all the best in the future, and hopeful to see what future endeavors they come up with.

We are working on a massive project here at The Beer Thrillers. We are creating a map of all of the breweries across the United States. State by state we are adding maps of all of the different states with every brewery in each state. (We will eventually get to the US Territories, as well as the Canadian Provinces, and possibly more countries; as well as doing some fun maps like a map of all the breweries we’ve been to, and other fun maps.) You can find the brewery maps here:

We are also working on a project of creating printable and downloadable PDFs and resources to be able to check and keep track of all of the breweries you’ve been to. So stay tuned for that project once we are finished with the Brewery Maps of the US States.

With Heavy Hearts Tattered Flag Announces Last Day https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/07/28/with-heavy-hearts-tattered-flag-announces-last-day/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=with-heavy-hearts-tattered-flag-announces-last-day Fri, 28 Jul 2023 12:40:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=12086 With Heavy Hearts Tattered Flag Announces Their Last Day of Operation

Tattered Flag Brewery and Distillery announced on their social media just minutes ago (at 8:30 AM) when their last day of operation will be. Saying with heavy hearts that Sunday, October 1st of 2023 will be their last day of operation.

We had previously announced their sale – Tattered Flag Brewery and Distillery For Sale – which is a complete buy out / turn key sale. All product, all equipment, full brand, full building sale. (More on the sale later in this article.) The sale was announced to the public on July 7th, 2023 (it had been internally and privately on sale for a solid month before that).

Today, July 28th, 2023 just minutes ago (8:30 AM) Tattered Flag announced their upcoming closure. The following was their announcement on Facebook:

It’s with heavy hearts that we announce that after seven incredible years, our final day of operation will be Sunday, October 1st. Had we known the pandemic was coming, we would not have expanded as quickly as we did. When the Covid shutdowns happened, we resigned ourselves to the fact that we would likely go out of business…but Pat said, “Let’s do as much good as we can before the end.” So we made hand sanitizer and fought like hell to survive. Unfortunately, the pandemic and the resulting inflation/labor crisis have finally caught up to us. Many of you will ask how you can help. We ask that you come see us several more times in the next two months, and when you do, take good care of our amazing staff.

We want to thank everyone who supported us…our Middletown neighbors and friends, near and far, who raised a flag with us. We shared good times and great experiences that we will cherish forever.

Tattered Flag Brewery and Distillery – Facebook Post

Lancaster, Gettysburg, and Hollywood Casino Operations

The Lancaster Barrel House, the Gettysburg Tap Room, and the Hollywood Casino Upstairs Bar have been closed for several weeks now. Their tap room and bar lounge in Hershey has been previously leased to YAH Brew.

They were up to five locations at one point – the main brewery and restaurant location in Middletown PA, their Gettysburg PA tap room, their barrel house in Lancaster PA, the Hershey PA bar lounge, and their upstairs restaurant and tap room at Hollywood Casino in Grantville PA.

Tattered Flag Brewery For Sale

The following comes from our article about their sale:

The Middletown brewery and distillery appears to be up for sale. Nearly ten years in business, they opened in 2015, as a veteran owned brewery and distillery (the first in the state). In recent months (less than two years or so) they have opened a location in Lancaster – their barrel house – as well as took over the upstairs bar and restaurant at Hollywood Casino (Tattered Flag at Hollywood Casino).

They previously also had a location in Hershey – the Tattered Flag Bar and Lounge – which they are sub leasing to YAH Brew.

PennLive broke the story this morning:

Tattered Flag Brewery & Still Works in Middletown is for sale.

The nearly 10-year-old brewery and distillery at 1 S. Union St. is listed for an undisclosed price by Nik Sgagias of NAI CIR, a commercial real estate company in Lemoyne. Tattered Flag remains open for business.

The sale includes a 13,000 square-foot state-of-the-art brewery with canning and bottling lines, distillery, and full service restaurant with seating up to 200 guests, according to the listing.Dauphin County brewery / distillery with restaurant listed for sale – PennLive

In 2020 they announced they would be shipping statewide with their “Supply Drop” feature, letting you order their beers anywhere in the state of Pennsylvania.

Their locations in Lancaster (the Barrel House) and Gettysburg (the tap room) are currently listed as temporarily closed.

Justin Hoak, a former head brewer of theirs, now runs his own brewery – YAH Brew – at their former location in Hershey, next to Duck Donuts.

Tattered Flag Brewery and Distillery Is Up For Sale

The sale includes a 13,000 square-foot state-of-the-art brewery with canning and bottling lines, distillery, and full service restaurant with seating up to 200 guests, according to the listing.

Tattered Flag Brewery and Distillery

The brewery, restaurant, and distillery were a staple to the Middletown (Dauphin County), Pennsylvania community. Located on Union Street in the center of Middletown, it was typically a very busy restaurant.

Over the past year or so there has been a lot of changes with them. Their head distiller left to move to the Caribbean, they’ve changed multiple brewmasters and brewer staff (Dave Marrow, Cliff Plank, Justin Hoak), and at one point they were up to five locations (the Middletown location, the bar and lounge in Hershey, the Lancaster Barrel House, the Gettysburg tap room, and the Bar and Restaurant at Hollywood Casino). There was even talks at one point of them opening a bar and restaurant in other Hollywood Casino properties – not just the one in Grantville, Pennsylvania.

A few months ago a former employee of theirs had lamented to me that he felt they might have “over reached” and “over stepped” themselves, coming out of COVID – 19 and the coronavirus pandemic. Opening and spreading a bit too far and too wide.

This wouldn’t be the first or last brewery (or business in general) that has done that.

As per the sales listing the owners are willing to stay on to assist the new owners in the transition of the company.

Tattered Flag dates to 2015 when military veteran Pat Devlin and his Susquenita High School friends opened the brewery and restaurant at the former Elks building following a major renovation project. They converted the two-story building including three storefronts and a meeting room into the brewpub and distillery.

Canning Day at Tattered Flag

I really sincerely hope that someone comes and buys the brewery and wants to do good with it. Its a beautiful building, a beautiful brewery, and much can be done with both the brewing and distillery options of the building.

Personally I’ve had a lot of good memories in the building. I used to help Justin, volunteering, on canning days for beers, and helping to can, label, and move beers on beer release days. Myself, Amy, and Scarlet also enjoyed going their for the food and atmosphere, having recently gotten to go to their big St. Paddy’s Day fest.

Hopefully someone with good intentions, and good brewing, and good business knowledge will purchase them.

The Final Four

This is the final week (the last few days) of voting for The Battle of the Breweries (2023), and I said that one per day, I would cover each of the final contestants. First up is Tattered Flag Brewery and Distillery. Tomorrow we will be covering Allusion Brewing Company, and then AleCraft Brewing Company, and finally Mad Chef Brewing.

You can vote in the tournament here: The Battle of the Breweries (2023) – Finals Fatal Four Way.

In this article we are going to discuss Tattered Flag Brewery and Distillery as a whole, then discuss how they did in this year’s tournament, and offer links to all of our related articles, as well as a history of the tournament this year.

Tattered Flag Brewery and Distillery

Tattered Flag Brewery and Still Works – Veteran Craft

First, let’s start with the words straight from their own mouth, this is how Tattered Flag describes themselves, from their new Tattered Flag Supply Drop website:

What started as a dream in the mountains of Afghanistan has now become a brand that is recognized for quality and innovation. We are honored to have been named “Simply the Best Brewery” (2019/2020) and “Simply the Best Distillery” (2018/2019/2020) in Central Pennsylvania by Harrisburg Magazine. To check our our full website, including the individual pages for each location, please head to www.tatteredflagbsw.com.

Tattered Flag Supply Drop

(Tattered Flag Supply Drop is their Shipping Service Statewide in Pennsylvania.)

Back in September 2016, Cathy Jordan, a journalist for The Burg newspaper ran an article where she interviewed owner Pat Devlin. (Pat Devlin by the way is a US Veteran, and has even done recent deployments, and been featured on FOX News.)

Hope is a tattered flag, according to a verse by Carl Sandburg, a poem that celebrates the American spirit.

According to Pat Devlin, a U.S. Navy veteran, co-owner and CEO of Tattered Flag Brewery and Still Works, a flag—though tattered—still represents what it once stood for, but with character. And it’s that character that Devlin wants to capture within the brewery, which opened in July.

The business idea brewed inside the heads of owners Pat Devlin, Matt Fritz, Tony DeLellis and Ben Ramsay for many years. The guys have known each since high school and share a common interest in craft beer. Their goal is to provide something you can’t find elsewhere.

Hoist the Flag – Tattered Flag Article in The Burg

The article goes on to mostly discuss the building they are currently in, on Union Street in Middletown, Pennsylvania:

“I traveled a lot and visited hundreds of breweries,” he said. “After my wife and I moved back home, we actually looked at six different locations. When I walked into this building, I just knew this was the place. It was unique.”

That unique find was the 105 year-old Elks building, which means the brewery is stocked with nostalgic charm. The Elks moved out years ago, and, since then, the building has housed a variety of businesses, including a sporting goods store, a florist shop, an upscale men’s clothing store and a shoe store. Its basement now hosts an open fermentation space, a brew house, canning line and grain mill. The first floor is a tasting room, while the third floor houses three private party rooms—including the “The Penn State Room” and a three-season room—along with an open kitchen, a stage, seating for more than 240 people and a standing bar.

Hoist the Flag – Tattered Flag Article in The Burg

Tattered Flag Brewery and Distillery in Middletown can be located here: 1 S Union St, Middletown, PA 17057.

In August of 2015, PennLive ran an article about the opening and starting up of Tattered Flag in Middletown.

The project received contingent approval from both the Middletown Industrial and Commercial Development Authority and borough council Monday night after an hour-and-a-half presentation and question/answer session in MCSO Hall.

Ramsay, of York, said they worked with marketing and development experts to find a location. “The three top areas were Marysville, Linglestown and Middletown,” Ramsay said.

“When we came to Middletown, the environment we wanted to create and some of the brand we wanted to be just fit with what we are, especially the inside of that building,” Ramsay said.

“All of us have memories of coming to dollar movies here when we were kids,” Ramsay said, referring to the Elks Theatre in the building, which is not part of the deal.

This will not be “just a small-town microbrewery,” Ramsay said. “There are a lot of things with the building we’re going to do.”

Tattered Flag Brewery & Still Works to be more than ‘small-town microbrewery’

They further discuss the distillery aspects of Tattered Flag:

They see themselves on the leading edge of the distillery movement, while the number of small craft breweries is already booming in the state. There are 22 distilleries in Pennsylvania, Ramsay said, and one is planned for midtown Harrisburg. There are that many craft breweries and brewpubs in York County alone.

As for brewing experience, partner Pat Devlin said their head brewer and assistant brewer each have more than 10 years brewing experience, and the head brewer has 2.5 years’ commercial experience. Devlin said he has four years brewing experience, and nine months apprenticing in Gettysburg.

Tattered Flag Brewery & Still Works to be more than ‘small-town microbrewery’

The article did discuss the four owners and partners of Tattered Flag. As far as I know, now in 2023, the only two that are still partners and owners are Tony and Pat. Their biographies from the article are:

Tony DeLellis of Marysville is an Elizabethtown College graduate who has worked three years in the mortgage industry. He was previously a teacher, and is a regional church planner.

Pat Devlin of Mechanicsburg, who completed a 10-year stint in the Navy last September, is a Penn State graduate. He has six years’ experience in the food industry, and is apprenticing as a brewer in Gettysburg.

Tattered Flag Brewery & Still Works to be more than ‘small-town microbrewery’

Tattered Flag Brewery and Distillery opened their Middletown location in July of 2016, a veteran owned business, and one of only (roughly) 20 or so such breweries in Pennsylvania. They were the first brewery and distillery to open as a single entity.

Tattered Flag Brewery Information

The following comes from Untappd about Tattered Flag Brewery – they are a micro brewery from Middletown, Pennsylvania, with 632 unique beers, and a global average rating of 3.78 (as of 4.12.23). They have 117,996 ratings. Their Untappd description is currently blank.

The Battle of the Breweries (2023)

Here is a look at how Tattered Flag Brewery made it to the Finals Fatal Four Way:

In the Group Stage, they were in Group H of the Chinook Conference. Tattered Flag Brewery and Rusty Rail Brewing Company emerged victorious from Group H. (Tattered Flag Brewery had 76 votes, and Rusty Rail Brewing Company had 75 votes.)

In the Chinook Conference Round of 16, Tattered Flag Brewery (122 votes) defeated Dogfish Head Craft Brewery (86 votes).

In the Chinook Conference Round of 8, Tattered Flag (136 votes) defeated Sly Fox Brewing (96 votes).

In the Chinook Conference Final Four:

In the first match up we had the number 9 seed Tattered Flag Brewery and Distillery taking on the number 13 seed Chubby Squirrel Brewing Company. Tattered Flag Brewery came out on top with 140 votes against Chubby Squirrel Brewing Company’s 81 votes.

In the Chinook Conference Finals:

In the Chinook Conference we had number 9 seed – Tattered Flag Brewery and Distillery – going up against fellow veteran owned number 10 seed – Cox Brewing Company. Both breweries have been on a tear in the voting, putting up big numbers in each of the last several rounds.

Tattered Flag Brewery put up an absolute dominant performance this round however. (Looking as dominant as Roman Reigns did last night… ….see what I did there… no? … ok….). Tattered Flag Brewery garnered 9358 votes this round. Besting Cox Brewing Company’s 2414 votes. Thats a 6944 vote difference.

They are going to be very tough to beat in the Finals Fatal Four Way.

Thank You for Reading

I know this post and article was due yesterday, but got very busy with the beautiful weather and the yard work. So the new schedule is now – Tattered Flag (today / now / Wednesday), Allusion Brewing Company (tomorrow / Thursday), AleCraft Brewing Company (Friday), and Mad Chef Brewing (Saturday).

I want to take this opportunity to congratulate the four remaining breweries and wish them all the best of luck. I have enjoyed visiting all four of them, and they certainly all rank very highly in my opinion. (Amy has been to three of them with me, and has loved the three she visited as well.)

It is a tremendous honor to get to this point in the competition – out of 160 breweries, we are down to just 4 remaining. Thats amazing to think about, and shows the love and support these breweries have.

Even the conference runner ups put in a tremendous effort and deserve some recognition too. Cox Brewing Company, Von C Breiwng Company, RAR Brewing, and Boneshire Brew Works are all amazing breweries and have loved my (and Amy as well) visits to their breweries.

As well as I want to take the moment to thank all of the 160 breweries that shared, linked, pushed, and helped make this tournament a rousing success. You all blow me away with the love, support, and energy you pour into this – as well as what you pour into your breweries (and, by relation – what you pour into my glass). Thank you all for everything you’ve done!

This tournament has been a lot of fun, but it is also a lot of work. So thank you to everyone for your patience.

I might be getting the Map of Vermont Breweries done today, but its not looking likely due to another gorgeous day (81 degrees today!) and having lots of yard work, as well as going to Drew’s to film some Star Wars related reels for his Knights of Nostalgia page.

We have also completed the first two Maps of Breweries – Maine and New Hampshire. You can see those here:

We are currently starting to work on creating maps of all the breweries in each state, starting geographically with Maine. So be on the lookout for these great resources to soon be popping up on the blog. Hoping to get a state done every 2 – 4 days. (Some will be quicker and easier than others, but 50 states, plus Washington D.C., will certainly take some time!)

Thank you everyone for reading and please like, share, follow, subscribe, all that good stuff you see at the end of every YouTube video.

Cheers All!

Small Business Saturday 2022 https://thebeerthrillers.com/2022/11/26/small-business-saturday-2022/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=small-business-saturday-2022 Sat, 26 Nov 2022 17:09:30 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=9950
Small Business Saturday 2022

Small Business Saturday 2022

Now that you’re done hunting for the Bourbon County Brand Stouts yesterday or hitting up Shangy’s for their hundreds of different Black Friday stouts, or gone down to Aslin to get their yearly releases, its time to celebrate Small Business Saturday.

Lots of breweries are getting in on the act of Small Business Saturday. And to be frankly honest, there is no better shopping day that showcases breweries than this (well, except for the “Small Brewery Sunday” that will be tomorrow). Almost all breweries can be considered “small business” and “local business”. As I always like to say here on the blog, “Support Local” “Drink Local” “Support Small Business” “Support Small Breweries” etc. The brewery owners, brewers, bartenders, cooks, and workers at your local brewery are your own town residents. Their not ‘fat cat CEOs’ like AB InBev, or Coors, or Miller. Their not out jet flying, living it up in clubs, mansions, etc. Their the guy who helps coach your kid’s T – Ball team or helps Tina not fall on her butt at gymnastics too much, or maybe their the ones volunteering to be a crossing guard to get your kids to school safely, etc.

What I’m saying is – craft breweries are local businesses. They support their communities. They help their communities through volunteer work, through giving back, by providing local jobs, by being a local restaurant, local gathering place, a place for fundraiser events, etc.

So lets give back to them and support them and shop the local small businesses and breweries today – Small Business Saturday.

How Can You Help?

Support. Support. Support. Support. Did I say Support? Maybe in capital – SUPPORT? Maybe with spaces – S – U – P – P – O – R – T? Its pretty simple. Shop local. Shop small. Go into any local craft brewery and shop today. Merchandise, beer sales, gift cards, food to go, etc. Check out Facebook and Instagram and Twitter today and see what your local breweries are up to and what sales they have going on. Just scanning over my personal and The Beer Thrillers Facebook newsfeed I was inundated with breweries advertising sales for this whole weekend or today in particular, for merchandise like hoodies, or gift card discounts (20$ for 25$ or 20$ for 30$, etc.), buy one get one free four packs, and all kinds of deals.

A quick search on my Facebook (literally just typing into the search bar ‘Small Business Saturday’ and going through beer / brewery related pages, the following popped up) :

  • Pineknotter Brewing Company
  • First Sip Studios
  • Second Sin Brewing Company
  • Trace Brewing
  • TBC Brewing Company
  • Arboretum Trail Brewing
  • Richmond Farm And Brewery
  • Black Forest Brewery
  • Trails to Ales Brewery
  • Roundhouse Brewery
  • Something Brewery
  • Apex Brewery
  • ……etc.

And that was just a quick search. It brought up a lot of non – brewery businesses as well, and obviously my feed is tailored more towards local to Pennsylvania breweries (though some non – PA breweries did sneak in).

But getting back to the short of it – do a little bit of research, look up your favorite local brewery, be it Boneshire Brew Works, Tattered Flag Brewery and Distillery, Troegs Independent Craft Brewery, ZeroDay Brewing Company, Official BBQ and Brewery, Ever Grain Brewing Company, Mellow Mink Brewing, Al’s of Hampden / Pizza Boy Brewing, etc. Just take a two to five second quick search, see what deals they got going on, and check them out.

The great thing is (nowadays) you don’t even have to leave the comfort of your own home. Most of these breweries have their own pages set up and their own merchandise stores and even beer to go or online beer ordering sites that you can just purchase through. Like Burial Brewing Company doing their Tombsgiving Weekend with free shipping (of over 100$ or more though; but still). There is lots of great options for both online, and in person now.

And speaking of shopping online, shipping has become easier and easier. Since COVID – 19 and the pandemic, the shipping laws and sales of beer has become easier and easier. Getting great local beer right to your door, and even getting great beer from some top notch breweries out of state right to your door (like Trillium, Tired Hands, Aslin, Burial, The Veil, Adroit Theory, Dogfish Head, Dewey, etc.) is even easier than it ever was before. No need for beer traders and mules!

So Lets Get Out There and Shop

So get out there and support and shop your local small businesses and small breweries. They’ve all had a rough go the last few years with the coronavirus / COVID – 19 pandemic, the inflation, the CO2 shortages, the staffing issues, the rising costs of things like wings, meat, etc, the aluminum can issues, etc. So lets get out and shop and support our favorite local craft breweries today on Small Business Saturday (November 26th, 2022)!

Thanks For Reading

I wanted to make this quick shout out to all of our awesome local craft breweries. They really deserve our support and sponsorship and business today. Instead of shopping big retail stores or big breweries like AB InBev or Coors or Miller, lets support the small mom and pop breweries. The local guys who provide us such great customer service, great beer, great food, and great atmospheres. Cheers to them! Cheers to all those hardworking brewery staff and owners. And cheers to all of you shopping and supporting local businesses, breweries, and other small stores.

Cheers All!

The Round of 8 of The Battle of the Beers (2022)

We’re Moving On

The competition is slimming down again, getting hardened by steel and flint, and moving on. The victorious are once again trudging into battle whilst the defeated head home with their heads low – some on the backs of their shields, spears across their chest.

That’s right, we’re now onto the next round and stage of The Battle of the Beers. We’ve gone from 32 competitors to 16, and now to 8. The battle is beginning to really heat up as we start getting closer and closer to the true champion.

Might this all be hyperbole? 100%…. but either way ‘ya’ gotta love it as we forge on in this great testament of will and power and hop and barley and malt!

So let’s see who all is left!

The Final 8 Competitors

  • Toppling Goliath (with Pseudo Sue)
  • Lawson’s Finest Liquids (with Sip of Sunshine)
  • Von C Brewing (with Walking on Clouds)
  • Rubber Soul (with Dropout)

Blog Update

There’s been quite some news here for us at The Beer Thrillers. Amy and I are expecting our first daughter (together) (I have three daughters with my ex – wife). She is due in November.

But we do have lots of stuff on the lookout. We are still working on getting the podcast set up and to go live (or recorded) with that soon. We are also looking at getting a new layout for the blog, that will hopefully look a lot nicer, be smoother, and easier to use.

We also have some great new articles I am hoping that will be all dropping in the next few days – including a few brewery reviews / visits as well as getting some beer reviews done (I know its been a little bit of a while), as well as several news articles. We also have some big articles that will be dropping as well. (Also, hope you all like ‘list’ articles, because we have several with it being the halfway point of the year. I know a lot of blogs and pages are doing similar, and we’ve decided to follow suit. So, hopefully that will rank up there with some stuff you all will enjoy.) Lots of these should be up now, or up in the near future. As well as several articles about the US Beer Open Competition. (Like Wallenpaupack Brewing’s two gold medals, Wolf Brewing’s one gold medal, and Sun King Brewery winning Grand National.)

Amy is also transitioning to her new job, so she is a bit busy, but will be getting back into the flow here at TBT – HQ (The Beer Thrillers HQ…. like I said…. name in progress.)

But thank you all for all the continued support you are showing us here at the blog and our social medias. It really means a lot. We just hit 2K followers on Facebook and we’ve been hovering right around 500 followers on Instagram. So thank you all very much for following us! We appreciate all the love and support so very very very very much!

As always, we are looking to grow, expand, and innovate here at The Beer Thrillers. These tournaments are a blast to run, and I hope everyone is enjoying them just as much as we are hosting them. We are always on the lookout for writers as well and other people who would like to become involved with The Beer Thrillers, if you are interested, you can contact us directly at thebeerthrillers@gmail.com and we will get back to you.

Thanks for reading!

Thanks For Reading

Once again – as always – thanks for reading. I hope you are enjoying the tournament, as well as the wrap up and heads up on the state of the blog. (Some of that was copy and pasted from the Round of 32 post, but it holds true all the same.) Lots of stuff going on here at the blog, both behind the scenes, and in front of your screens. So keep your eyeballs peeled… well… that just sounds nasty… whatever… just stay on the lookout!

This tournament has been a blast so far, and I hope you are all enjoying it as well. Keep voting and sharing! We are coming down to the wire, lets see who wins our first Annual Battle of the Beers!

Cheers All!

Blog Update

So, just to give everyone a bit of some news. This post is going up a little bit later than intended (got the results post done before the doctor’s appointment, but this one is going up afterwards). There’s been quite some news here for us at The Beer Thrillers. Amy and I are expecting our first daughter (together) (I have three daughters with my ex – wife). She is due in November.

Also, on Sunday my aunt passed away. So things have been in a little bit of an up and down state here at Bender Braus Brewery / The Beer Thrillers homestead / The Beer Thrillers HQ. (Working names in progress I suppose.)

But we do have lots of stuff on the lookout. We are still working on getting the podcast set up and to go live (or recorded) with that soon. We are also looking at getting a new layout for the blog, that will hopefully look a lot nicer, be smoother, and easier to use.

Thanks for reading!

Thanks For Reading

Like I do with every post and article, I enjoy ending with a “Thanks for Reading” section that has some upcoming projects, news, and what we’re doing behind the scenes, and then goes into my ‘end credits’ paragraphs. I did most of that in the above section, but just want to throw out a few other things here.

Firstly, I want to thank everyone for the support. Secondly, I want to thank everyone who has taken an interest in the tournaments we do here, and that we really hope everyone enjoys them.

Thirdly, we’re looking at a busy weekend. Today and tomorrow is the annual Ffej of July (if you know – you know). Drew, Amy, myself, and several other friends (maybe Jason, Andy Parys, maybe even Amy’s mom SueAnn), and of course lots of our other friends in the industry and craft beer community will be hanging out. We are also looking to get back out on the road soon and hit up some fun breweries and check out some new places, so please be sure to stay tuned for all that.

Ok, enough rambling, get out there and vote and share this for everyone to vote as well! Thank you all for reading and supporting us and have a great weekend!

Cheers All!
