Just earlier today, Be Here Brewing has announced that they will be closing at the end of November (2024). In a heartfelt post on Facebook they made their announcement about the difficult decision. In a growing list of breweries that have closed this year, the Avondale brewery unfortunately is another casualty. On the heels of Auruchs Brewing announcing their closure, Iron Hill Brewing in Phoenixville closing, and with the possibility of Logyard Brewing being closed – Be Here Brewing will be closing at the end of November 2024.

Located at 122 Pennsylvania Ave, Avondale, PA 19311, the Be Here Brewery has been in business nearly five years.

Dear Friends,
Since the day we opened Be Here Brewing Company nearly five years ago, we’ve come to know you not just as customers, but as friends. Your warmth and camaraderie, your support through both good times and bad, and your many compliments on the beer and food we have served you have all been greatly appreciated. And so it is with heavy hearts that we must share with you the news that Be Here Brewing will be closing at the end of November.

It has truly been a great pleasure for all of us to have been able to provide you with a place to gather, a place to eat and drink, and a place to socialize and be entertained, or simply said, a place to “be here”. We’ve tried to be more than just a place to eat and drink. We’ve shared your birthdays, anniversaries, and celebrations of all kinds. We’ve hosted numerous fundraising events and provided beer and other donations to support the community that we have been privileged to be a part of. When we opened it was with the sentiment that all communities deserve to have their own local place like this, and we remain hopeful that another brewery or brewpub will replace us in our beautiful, historic building.

We hope that between now and the end of the month you’ll join us in enjoying this place again, and to gather again with friends, family, and neighbors. Although there’s no way we can see all of our friends to say goodbye, we hope that whatever the future brings you’ll have a place to live in the moment and enjoy “being here” wherever you are.

White Horse Brewing LLC To Celebrate 12th Anniversary all November

Starting November 1st, White Horse Brewing LLC will be having a month long celebration for their 12th year anniversary! Congratulations to White Horse Brewing LLC for 12 years in Berlin, PA, and for quality craft beer and being a great member of their community.

I had a fantastic time there and the beers were great, the people and employees were wonderful, and it was very nice and relaxing, and this was all in such a fraught time (November of 2020), with COVID-19 / Coronavirus stuff still going on, with the election, with everything going on. It was nice to relax, have some beers, talk to the employees, and mellow out on my trip.

Troegs Brewing Releasing Night Gazer Stout

This Thursday – November 30th, 2023 – Troegs Independent Brewing is releasing Night Gazer Stout at their Hershey brewery. This will be a brewery exclusive. A potentially one – off beer similar to Cyclops Teardrops (insofar as production).

Troegs Independent Brewing usually follows a pattern for their releases. Scratch Series beers and possible one – off production releases occur on Thursdays. Big beers, seasonals, or the franchise standards (Blizzard of Hops, Double Blizzard, Hop Cyclone, Nugget Nectar, Mad Elf, Nimble Giant, etc.) are released on Mondays.

Night Gazer Stout will be available only in house at the Troegs Brewery on Hersheypark Drive (Hershey, PA). It will be available on draft as well as in 16 oz pounder cans – (four packs, cases, and singles in the General Store fridge). You can get crowler and growler fills as well.

Rumor mill is that Troegs might be seeing how this stout does and putting this out onto the distribution market going forward and scaling Grand Cacao back and keeping that as an in – house beer only. (No official word has been said yet.)

Upcoming Schedule

From here to the end of the year Troegs Independent Brewing has some decently big heavy releases coming out. Nugget Nectar is looking to be making its yearly return – this year soon after Christmas – very soon after Christmas – with a tentative date being 12.26 (the very day after Christmas). Also upcoming is a Black Cherry Limeade, another Lager scratch, and potentially Peach Orangeade (returning).

So stay tuned for these future releases.

I know I can’t wait to get back from AC (Atlantic City) and get to try the stout, as well as the new Scratch 505 Double IPA (DIPA).

Yes, me too.  But we also make some leftovers into other things.  I feel the Bubba montage about shrimp from Forrest Gump coming on.

I remember years past my Grandma would serve Turkey, gravy and waffles.   And later on, Turkey sandwiches, turkey salad, an entire thanksgiving meal casserole, hot turkey sandwiches, etc.  We made turkey chowder with the leftovers this year.  But let’s not forget leftover stuffing, I mean if there is such a thing.  I recently tried stuffing waffles. I am way to impatient and need to buy a stronger waffle maker!

If you are nibbling on the typical roast turkey dinner your go to is going to be an Belgian Dubbel  or Amber/brown ale. Our go to is Baker Street Brown Ale by Allusion Brewing Company (see above picture). (See Amy’s article: We Can’t Always Be a Glutton Right? – Perfect Portions and Allusion Brewing Company). A full bodied beer like the BSB pairs perfectly with the traditional stuffing and gravy.

The other beer we paired it with was Mad Elf by Troeg’s.  Tis the season!  This happens to be the hostess’s favorite beer so we didn’t even think to show up without a case of Mad Elf for her.  This is a Belgium but a strong dark ale. Mad Elf is another way I feel is a great way to kick off the holiday season. (Grandma SueAnn does love her Mad Elf.)

And as for the leftover pie, I am lucky enough to be nibbling on a pumpkin cheese cake.  I paired it with a Veneration of the Dead from Evergrain.  VotD comes in with a 14.2% ABV to knock you on your butt and keep you humble.  VotD is described on Untapped as “For our 7th Anniversary, a rich and luxurious Imperial Stout aged extensively in apple brandy and bourbon barrels and then conditioned on toasted hazelnuts, cocoa nibs, whole vanilla beans and a touch of maple syrup.”  The light and airy pumpkin cheesecake pairs perfectly with this rich and bold stout.  I really wish I wasn’t out of VotD and same with the Brown Street ale.  Both of these will need restocked in our fridge!

Thanksgiving

Ben’s note: Thanksgiving this year a very low key get together, but a wonderful day for all. It was Scarlet’s second Thanksgiving, as she just turned 1 on November 11th. I enjoyed several Troegs Independent Brewing beers throughout the course of the day – Mad Elf, Troegenator, and Blizzard of Hops. As well as a nightcap of the Veneration of the Dead. We had gotten this as a crowler from West Connection Beer Vault in Hummelstown / Hershey a few months ago, and it’s still held up well. Grandma SueAnn hosted us, and it was Amy, myself, Scarlet, as well as my parents, and then friends of Amy and SueAnn’s – Deb and Shawn. We had turkey, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, baked corn, stuffing, gravy, and more that I’m forgetting this late at night after a few beers. Scarlet very much enjoyed her second Thanksgiving.

Amy has been very busy wrapping up her walk season, and taking care of the end of the walk season work events for her job, as well as doing so much more, that this is the first she’s really gotten a chance to do her weekly column. Sometimes life (especially life with a one year old) gets to be a bit hectic and gets in the way of writing unfortunately, as we certainly were hoping to get time for her to write this past Sunday and a few other days as well, but unfortunately it didn’t work out. But she was able to find time tonight, while Scarlet slept, and I was in a turkey / beer induced coma watching the boring San Fran – Seattle game.

‘Twas the night before Thanksgiving, when all through the town, Not a creature was stirring, not even a clown. The turkey was brining, the pie crusts were rolled, In hopes that a feast soon would unfold.

The craft beers were nestled in the fridge with care, In hopes that the guests soon would be there. Friends with growlers and pints in their cap, Had just settled down for a pre-feast nightcap.

When out on the lawn, there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the couch to see what was the matter. Away to the window, I stumbled with cheer, Tore open the blinds, it was my friends drawing near.

The moon on the breast of the newly-paved street, Gave a lustre of midday to the friends’ eager feet. When what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a miniature keg, pulled by eight tiny rein-beers.

With a bearded old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment, it must be Saint Nick. More rapid than eagles, his coursers they came, And he whistled and shouted and called them by name:

“Now, Cascade! Now, Simcoe! Now, Citra and Mosaic! On, Centennial! On, Amarillo! On, Saaz and Chinook! To the top of the porch! To the top of the wall! Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!”

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky. So up to the housetop, the coursers they flew, With a sleigh full of beers, and Saint Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof, The prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my head and was turning around, Down the chimney, St. Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in flannel, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot. A bundle of craft beers he had flung on his back, And he looked like a brewer just opening his pack.

His eyes, how they twinkled, his dimples how merry, His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry. His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard on his chin was as white as the snow.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke, it encircled his head like a wreath. He had a broad face and a round little belly, That shook when he laughed like a bowl full of jelly.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself. A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk. And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney, he rose.

He sprang to his keg, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight, “Happy Thanksgiving to all, and to all a good night!”

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Please have a very safe and happy and grateful Thanksgiving. Think of those who do not have anything, and think of those who are unable to be home for Thanksgiving due to jobs, or in the service, or due to other obligations or reasons.

Lets take this opportunity to think of others, and be to grateful for what we have, and to enjoy the company of friends and family.

I hope all of you a wonderful day tomorrow, and hope you find yourself at a table, with friends and family, with lots of wonderful food, fantastic craft beers, and great conversation.

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving. Which we all know means we need to eat plenty of turkey, mash potatoes, stuffing, cranberry, and of course – drink lots of beer. So we would be amiss if we didn’t share a fantastic Turkey Day recipe for you all!

We suggest using Troegenator by Troegs Independent Brewing; but you can use any beer you want – we would just suggest a darker beer to impart more flavor.

Why Use Beer

There’s just something to roasting with beer; it just gives the turkey skin that perfect crispy skin and makes the meat so juicy and tender. Falling off the bones tender.

Beer is a fantastic marinade, and can be used for burgers, chicken, turkey, chili, you name it. Honestly, the options are endless. At work people have talked about Mad Elf Cookies, Grand Cacao Chocolate Cake, etc. Fourscore Beer Company in Gettysburg turns some of their most popular beers into frozen yogurt / ice creams. Perfection in the summer!

Take the time to allow the turkey to soak overnight in a drunken mix of Troegenator (or your favorite beer of choice), smashed garlic cloves, and any herbs you like. Remember to pull it out of the fridge and let it unchill for about an hour or so.

Roasting

Personally, I prefer to let my turkey roast under foil, for about 90 minutes. This gives it that right amount of time to let the meat to get juicy and tender, and to let the beer really soak in. This should properly let it cook through. Now remove the foil (make sure you remove the foil) before putting it in your oven grill.

Here it becomes a bit less science and more “fly by your pants”. Let it in until the skin gets a nice golden, crispy, delicious looking brown. This is your call and your preference. So you decide when to remove it – but I suggest making sure its a golden brown. This insures that the skin is at its crispiest.

I suggest buying the case of 19.2 oz Troegenators at your local beverage distributor. They make for the perfect size for cooking the turkey. Not just for use in the recipe – but also for drinking while cooking – and the remainder can be served at the dinner!

Ingredients

(Serving size of six people.)

• 6 Turkey cutlets (drumsticks and thighs), washed and patted dry with paper towel
• 2 x 19.2 oz cans of Troegenator by Troegs Independent Brewing **
• 8 whole garlic cloves , crushed (Smash them with the flat side of a knife and the heel of your hand. DO NOT mince them.)
• 1 tablespoon vegetable stock powder
• Salt to taste (about 1 tablespoon)
• 2 sprigs of thyme , finely chopped
• 1 sprig of rosemary , finely chopped
• 2 tablespoons finely chopped parsley
• Extra herbs to garnish

(** = Option is up to you on this; what beer you use and the amount you use. I recommend two 19.2 oz cans, but you can use more or less, and you can use a different beer than Troegenator. I would suggest darker beers – bocks, double bocks, schwarzbiers, non – adjunct heavy stouts, porters, nut brown ales, barleywines, etc.)

Instructions

Place the turkey into a large baking dish. Pierce 1-inch slits through the turkey skin into the meat (about ½-inch deep). Pour in the beer; add the crushed garlic, stock powder and salt; turn the turkey skin side down; cover with foil and refrigerate for 4-6 hours or overnight for a deeper flavour. (Rotate the turkey once while soaking in the brine to ensure an even flavour when baking.) You can use a large conatiner for proper brining if you wish, but I find this method works and fits in our refrigerator!

When ready to roast; preheat oven to 200 °C | 390°F. Drain half of the beer marinade, leaving the remaining liquid in the pan. Cover with foil and make sure the sides of the pan are completely sealed. Place into the oven and roast for 1 hour 30 minutes, or until the turkey is cooked through. Remove from oven, uncover and rotate each portion. Change oven setting to grill (or broil) on medium-high heat and continue to roast until the skin is golden and crisp. Rotate to crisp the underside. Allow to rest 10-15 minutes to redistribute the juices.

Serving

Its Thanksgiving, so of course you are going to be providing mash potatoes, yam, cranberry sauce, stuffing, and all the other Thanksgiving foods. Whole potatoes go great with the Crispy Roasted Turkey recipe here.

And of course we suggest serving with your left over 19.2 oz Troegenators as well as Mad Elf for a desert beer. What a perfect Thanksgiving turkey meal and drink! Maybe the Bourbon Barrel Aged Impending Descent to cap off the night as the final touch down is scored? Or…. maybe some vintage Bourbon Barrel Aged Mad Elf? (Did we mention, that on Black Friday – Troegs Independent Brewing is releasing 2023’s Bourbon Barrel Aged Mad Elf?)

We all see it daily, maybe even hourly. We encounter it when we’re least expecting it — as well as when we are expecting it. Perhaps it can even happen to us – or from us. Of course, I am talking about human stupidity.

We encounter it all the time in our daily lives. At work, at home, online (especially online), while driving, while out eating, while out shopping, etc, etc, etc.

Perhaps its one of those things we just accept and move on, knowing that its going to be involved in our lives and there isn’t much we can really do about it.

Thankfully Carlo M. Cipolla gave us a codified look at the Laws of Human Stupidity. Philosophy in that same sense as ‘On Bullshit’ by Harry G. Frankfurt and ‘Assholes: A Theory’ by Aaron James. This is a quick dive into the stupidity of human nature.

Audio Book

While doing inventory at work today, I opened up Libby (an audio book app that lets you borrow books from libraries to listen to). It was a super quick read, and read extremely well too. Less than an hour for the book to be read all told, and it was read with the dry wit and humor that this piece is attempting to invoke while also being true and smart and intelligent.

It was narrated by Paul Boehmer.

The Laws:

1. Everyone underestimates the number of stupid individuals among us.
2. The probability that a certain person is stupid is independent of any other characteristic of that person.
3. A stupid person is a person who causes losses to another person while deriving no gain and even possibly incurring losses themselves.
4. Non-stupid people always underestimate the damaging power of stupid individuals.
5. A stupid person is the most dangerous type of person.

One of my favorite quotes from the book: “A stupid creature will harass you for no reason, for no advantage, without any plan or scheme and at the most improbable times and places. You have no rational way of telling if and when and how and why the stupid creature attacks. When confronted with a stupid individual you are completely at his mercy.”

This about sums up stupid people. The laws are pretty irrefutable, and there isn’t much room for negotiation on it. Again, the laws are:

1. Everyone underestimates the number of stupid individuals among us.
2. The probability that a certain person is stupid is independent of any other characteristic of that person.
3. A stupid person is a person who causes losses to another person while deriving no gain and even possibly incurring losses themselves.
4. Non-stupid people always underestimate the damaging power of stupid individuals.
5. A stupid person is the most dangerous type of person.

The Basic Laws of Human Stupidity

The first is exceptionally true. We all underestimate the number of stupid individuals among us. They are everywhere. Its like shape shifters, alien lizard people, like the Skrulls from Marvel, they are hiding in plan sight. They might even be someone you know – your best friend, your mum, your girlfriend even, who knows? Thats how insidious this “disease” [stupidity] is.

The book is pretty blunt in its language and phrasing. Theres no real political correctness, but there is no real political [in]correctness either. It just is. For example, rule number two is pretty straight forward – the stupid person is stupid because he’s not stupid; not because of any other defining characteristic. His race, his ethics, his nationality, his location, his place of birth, the way he looks, his gender, the skin color, etc, doesn’t matter. He is stupid — simply because — he is stupid.

George Carlin pretty much best sums it all up:

“Consider that the average person is stupid. Now, consider that most people are below average.”

I would have to look up the date for Carlin’s quote in question to see if he was inspired by Cipolla or vice versa; but they are basically cribbing off each other on this one.

Whereas Carlin is looking at things kind of more on an anecdotal, sociological side of things, more for the purposes of just humor with a bit of provocation of thought – Cipolla is doing it on kind of a philosophical, sociological, and academically / scholarly side. The economics and finance background of Cipolla lends him some credibility with the probability, the statistics, and the scholarly worldview. Whereas Carlin is making the statement and moving on with his monologue, Cipolla has science to back himself up and gives it to us.

Stupidity comes in many forms. And with that – in comes to people of all different levels; people who we would “think” are intelligent. Noble Prize Winners can do some stupid things (example – James Watson, the DNA co-discoverer, claiming that Blacks are inferior to Whites), politicians (…actually, this might not come as much of a shock to many people), leaders of all sorts – Hitler attacking Russia, people who have extreme values and allow them to cloud their normally intelligent judgments, people who express conspiracy theories long after they’ve been proven wrong; and these can be from all forms of walks of life – teachers, mentors, professionals and experts in their fields, etc, etc, etc.

“Whether the Second Basic Law is liked or not, however, its implications are frightening: the Law implies that whether you move in distinguished circles or you take refuge among the head-hunters of Polynesia, whether you lock yourself into a monastery or decide to spend the rest of your life in the company of beautiful and lascivious women, you always have to face the same percentage of stupid people—which percentage (in accordance with the First Law) will always surpass your expectations.”

This book borderlines on the brevity, one might even call it a pamphlet more than an actual rigorous book of academic value. But that might also be its best feature, its saving grace. For if it this was taken too far, to continue too long, it would become more on the bore, more on the tedious side, and lose much of that sharp wit, much of what makes it so poignant. On Bullshit by Harry G. Frankfurt follows that same similar ideology.

As some might say, this book goes a long way to showcasing the “downfall of Western Society since 1945”. Might be a bit too harsh on society… but then you have to remember – the stupid walk amongst us.

Carlo M. Cipolla

The following biography comes from Wikipedia:

Carlo M. Cipolla (15 August 1922 – 5 September 2000) was an Italian economic historian. He was a member of both the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society

As a young man, Cipolla wanted to teach history and philosophy in an Italian high school, and therefore enrolled at the political science faculty at the University of Pavia. While a student there, thanks to professor Franco Borlandi, a specialist in medieval economic history, he discovered his passion for economic history. He graduated from Pavia in 1944. Subsequently, he studied at the University of Paris and the London School of Economics.

Cipolla obtained his first teaching post in economic history in Catania at the age of 27. This was to be the first stop in a long academic career in Italy (Venice, Turin, Pavia, Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa and Fiesole) and abroad. In 1953 Cipolla left for the United States as a Fulbright fellow and in 1957 became a visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley. Two years later he obtained a full professorship.

Pennsylvania boasts over 800 breweries and wineries combined across the state — and that number is growing. But just as these numbers are increasing, so are the number of food insecure families and individuals across Pennsylvania. In fact, nearly 2 million Pennsylvanians struggle with hunger every day – including nearly 500,000 children.

That’s why Feeding Pennsylvania, PA Eats, and Breweries in PA are joining forces with local breweries and wineries across the state through Hops & Vines for Hunger — a month-long, statewide fundraiser throughout November. The campaign will aim to:

• Raise funds to maximize the work of Feeding Pennsylvania’s 9 member food banks and serve Pennsylvanians facing hunger;
• Support the development of nutrition education resources created by PA Eats to educate food-insecure Pennsylvanians on how to prepare simple, accessible meals with affordable, healthy ingredients commonly found in food pantries;
• Promote the support of local breweries and wineries across the Commonwealth.
