Big things are brewing (and distilling) over at Broken Goblet Brewing in Bensalem! If you’re a local craft beer fan, you’ve probably already sipped a pint or two at this beloved spot, but now there’s a whole new reason to visit: The Mixing Room – a brand-new distillery and taproom.

Broken Goblet, in collaboration with the Mutual Respect Brewery Collective (a name that screams local camaraderie), has truly upped the ante. They’ve transformed a once-abandoned space into something special: a 6,000-square-foot hub that’s part distillery, part taproom, and soon-to-be kitchen. And yes, it’s right next door to the original brewery.

A Bit of Background: From Dormant to Delightful

The space originally had a different future in mind. It was meant to house Key Spirits and a pizza restaurant until the pandemic threw a wrench in those plans. The property sat empty for years until Broken Goblet stepped in with their vision. Now, thanks to their hard work, The Mixing Room is alive, thriving, and serving up something for everyone.

This new space is part of the growing Mutual Respect Brewery Collective, which includes:

• Broken Goblet Brewing
• Trauger Brewing
• Lucky Cat Brewing Company
• CaféDilla
• And a soon-to-be-revealed distilling brand (yes, the suspense is real!).

So, what can you expect when you walk into The Mixing Room? Think cozy and chill vibes. The taproom offers a mix of seating options:

• Low tables for laid-back hangs
• High-tops for a group night out
• Lounge couches for maximum comfort

With seating for about 75 people and a bar that fits 10, the space is designed to feel personal and relaxing. Whether you want to enjoy a beer in peace or catch up with friends away from the usual buzz of the main venue, this is your spot. As co-owner Mike Sweeney puts it, “This was an answer to the questions, ‘Where do we go to get away from the noise?’ and ‘What if we just want to visit for a beer?’”

Beer, Spirits, and Seriously Good Cocktails

Craft beer lovers, don’t worry – you’re still covered. There are 16 taps pouring beers from all Mutual Respect brands. Grab a pint to stay, or pick up some cans and four-packs to go.

But here’s the exciting part: craft cocktails. While the distillery waits for its official Pennsylvania license, they’re serving drinks made with PA-based spirits. And to make those cocktails sing? Meet Anders, the new in-house mixologist with over a decade of experience working at top-notch speakeasies and whiskey lounges like Philly’s iconic Hop Sing Laundromat and The Local in New Jersey. Whether you’re a cocktail connoisseur or just looking to try something new, Anders has you covered.

Once the distillery gets rolling, expect clear spirits like vodka, gin, and white rum to kick things off. Down the road, they’re planning to dive into aged spirits, fun liqueurs, and maybe even some canned cocktails. If you’re into sipping locally-made spirits, keep your eyes on this space – big things are coming!

A New Taproom, But the Music Still Plays

If you’ve visited Broken Goblet before, you probably know their large music venue space. Here’s the deal:

Back At It

Back from our recent trip to Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey, we’re back at you with some beer reviews. (And yes, we did survive, despite rumors.) You can read about the road trip here:

We stopped at some fun breweries (including RAR Brewing, Burley Oak Brewing, and Cape May Brewing), even tried a milko pour, and also got a little bit of walking and hiking done. And hell, I even survived a ferry.

So we’re back to work here at the blog and delivering still our daily November articles. Today’s is another beer review.

Stout Season

Personally… I think its always stout season. It can be 98 degrees in the sun, and I can be sitting outside relaxing, reading a book on my patio, and I think its still stout season. But thats just me. I know that doesn’t apply to all people. For most (sane?) people, now is stout season.

So why not throw back an excellent stout by Aslin Beer Co in accordance with this wonderful season. So in appreciation of Stout Season I offer you: How Now Brown Cow – with a twist – Pumpkin Spice. My friend is a big time pumpkin spice lover, so when we saw this at Breski’s Beverage, it was an immediate grab. So here we are. Lets get to it.

Aslin Beer Company

First, let’s take a look at Aslin Beer Company. Just as an aside, they are coming to Pittsburgh shortly, and you can read about that here:

It first started with them being able to ship to Pennsylvania during COVID, but now they are full on moving in, and setting up shop in Pittsburgh.

According to Untappd they are a regional brewery that started in Alexandria Virginia. 607 unique beers to their name, and over 1 million check in and 933 thousand ratings. They have a global average rating of 4.11 as of 11.21.21. Their Untappd description reads:

Aslin Beer Company is a northern Virginia, DC suburb, microbrewery suited to provide great beverages and a wide variety. Visit our spacious, 24-tap tasting room in Alexandria, or our Herndon location for to-go beer only.

Beer Review

Beer: How Now Brown Cow w/Pumpkin Spice
Brewery: Aslin Beer Company
Style: Stout – Milk / Sweet
ABV: 6%
IBU: None
Untappd Description: This iteration of our delectable Milk Stout packs a punch of pumpkin & a creamy vanilla finish! Rich aromas of a fall evening ready for those cool, cozy days ahead.

First off, this is just a fun beer name to say over and over while drinking, I don’t care who you are. And I can only assume that everyone who is drinking this must repeat the beer name at least 15 times while drinking it. If not… what are you even doing here?

The aroma is a fun pleasant pumpkin smelling stout. You get the notes of your typical pumpkin spiced beer as you pour it out, and as you bring it to your nose and lips. You get your spices, you get all that reminds you of pumpkin, and you get some subtle (hidden by the pumpkin spices) malt and stout aromas.

Visually, this is a stout through and through. Its dark, its black, its pretty. Lovely brown creamy foamy head that left a nice lacing on the glass as I drank it. Varied and dispersed bubbles and nice head retention. The stout is certainly the type of black that Nietzsche would warn you about staring into.

This is a light bodied, creamy, smooth stout that really gives you a wonderful pumpkin spice flavor. Its a fun and tasty beer, especially if you enjoy pumpkin spices (if you don’t, your mileage will certainly vary on this one). The pumpkin spice comes in hard and heavy right out the gate and pummels your palate, after that, leaving you with a creamy stout, not itself light in flavor. The stout base is a good solid light (but not watery) stout, creamy from the vanilla, and well rounded with its malt base. I haven’t had the other iterations of this (looking at Untappd, seems like they’ve done a peanut butter, a coconut, coffee, coffee and maple, coffee and maple and bacon, hazelnut, and milk chocolate. To be honest, all of those different variations sound absolutely amazing, especially knowing how good this stout is. Aslin Beer Company certainly knows their stouts and does them very well. You’ll hear no complaints from me in that department or how well their made or executed. They can keep pumping them out and sending them my way, thats for sure. And at 6% this goes down easily and smooth and doesn’t hammer you over the head and knock you out. Makes for a perfect fall beer, perhaps around a camp fire making s’mores. (Or inside watching Dune before it leaves HBO Max like we did.)

Dune

Speaking of Dune, spent the night watching this with my friend, while we drank the above mentioned beer, as well as a few others (including FestiFall by South County Brewing Company). What did everyone else think of the movie? I really enjoyed it. I’ve heard complaints that it was hard to follow, or confusing, or that its just too much setup, etc. But I enjoyed it. I’m not a huge ‘Dune’ head, I read the original back in my Middle School or High School days (oh god how long ago was that?!), and have not read the sequels or all of the add-ons that Frank Herbert’s son Brian Herbert did with Kevin J. Anderson. (I have all of Frank’s sequels in my office, I really need to get around to reading this series again.)

And We Have Confirmation

As we posted yesterday – Aslin Beer Company Expanding to Pittsburgh – Aslin Beer Company hinted in their Instagram post about moving in at 1800 Smallman Street Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Today, 9.14.21, they posted a Facebook update that provided definitive information, and confirmed that they are indeed moving into Pittsburgh.

As posted on their Facebook page this morning around 9AM, Aslin Beer Company confirmed they are moving into Pittsburgh with the following Facebook post:

PGH YOU READY FOR US?! Coming Summer 2022: Aslin’s Pittsburgh taproom & brewhouse will be located in the Strip District’s Terminal building, as part of it’s full-scale revitalization. This new space will be the hub for research and development unique to Pittsburgh. A 10-barrel brewhouse, lagering tanks, open fermenters & fouders will support new brewing processes, techniques & ingredient choices. The space will also include a 7,000 sqft taproom, second floor mezzanine, outdoor patio and cafe..

We’ll be partnering with local business @scratchco_pgh, a community-oriented restaurant that supports farmers and producers, collaborates with nonprofits & maintains a firm commitment to sustainability and equity.

Founder of Scratch & Co. Don Mahaney adds, “We are very excited to showcase the best of our region’s farms and producers on the Aslin Pittsburgh menu.”

Aslin Beer Company’s Facebook Post

New Process of Brewery Expansion?

Looks like we’re seeing what will be the future of brewery expansion, at least here in Pennsylvania. Breweries able to ship and distribute their beers and merchandise, can use this as a way to gauge interest and to project and predict growth of their companies. If their shipping sales do well, and for an extended period of time, and if there seems to be legitimate interest in the area, and good real estate for such a move, they could then proceed to move and expand.

I foresee this becoming a trend with breweries who have gotten the ability to expand into Pennsylvania, and other areas, as well as breweries in general, using this as a trend and ability to do some market research before putting their resources into a possible expansion that could fail or backfire. Sadly, we’ve seen in the past breweries attempt to expand too much and it costing them dearly, not just in terms of the new location, but even their business as a whole.

It will be interesting to see if this becomes a trend for future breweries or not.

Looking Forward to the Future

We are certainly looking forward to the future of Aslin Beer Company in Pittsburgh, as well as their beers in general. They have always been a well received, and well liked brewery here at The Beer Thrillers HeadQuarters, and we can’t wait to make a trip out to Pittsburgh to get to visit them.

Also, today, Tattered Flag has announced for certain that their Lancaster Barrel House location will be opening Friday – September 17th. We will be posting more information about this shortly.

Looks Like Aslin is Moving into Pittsburgh, PA

Well, for all intents and purposes, it looks like Aslin Beer Company is moving into Pittsburgh. They posted the above image to their Instagram page (Aslin Beer Co. Instagram) earlier today, with the caption that shows a pin and says “1800 Smallman St” with the “looking” eyes emoji.

After this was posted, and then re-posted, and then re-posted, and again re-posted, in several Facebook groups, and online message boards, several “people in the know”, stated how “finally the cat is out of the bag”. So it looks like, without saying it, their saying it. And it seems to be happening.

Sorry for the quality of the pics, but Google Maps was giving some trouble in screenshotting. But these give you an idea of the map and area of Pittsburgh where Aslin hinted at in their Instagram post.

According to the Google Maps street view, its down the street from The Church Brew Works, and it looks to be close to Insurrection Ale Works Tap Room. (In the first pic, screen shotted from the mobile Google Maps app, the beer mug is the Insurection Ale Works Tap Room, and the red pin is 1800 Smallman Street.)

Pittsburgh is home to numerous breweries, including mentioned Church Brew Works, Insurrection Ale Works, as well as Brewery Gentleman, ShuBrew, Penn Brewery, Cinderlands, Dancing Gnome, Couch Brewery, Hitchhiker, Grist House, and many more.

So this will certainly be a wonderful addition to the brewery scene in Pittsburgh. Ryan Galiotto commented about the “cat being out of the bag” now today about Aslin expanding into Pittsburgh, and pointed out that they are a part of the ‘Drink the Table’ brewfest in Pittsburgh on November 6th. Ryan is the founder and head of Fueled by Hops LLC and community.

News About the Brewery

There has been no word yet on the construction or anything more substantial than this Instagram post and the comments made by several people. So timescale on construction, opening dates, or anything more than that. But when news becomes available, we’ll be posting it here, so be on the look out.

Add another fantastic out of state brewery now shipping into Pennsylvania. Just like Grist House Brewing announce statewide shipping in Pennsylvania, Aslin Beer Company also announced that they will be shipping into Pennsylvania.

Aslin Beer Company is usually listed in any “best of the region” breweries for the East Coast area. They are from Alexandria Virginia, and recently opened a second location in Herndon. They are popular for their IPAs (particularly New England IPAs). Aslin’s Untappd page: a micro brewery from Alexandria Virginia, they have 442 unique beers with a global average rating of 4.13 out of 755K+ ratings. Their description reads: “Aslin Beer Company is a northern Virginia, DC suburb, microbrewery suited to provide great beverages and a wide variety. Visit our spacious, 24-tap tasting room in Alexandria, or our Herndon location for to-go beer only.”

Welcome back to round number two of the four rounds of four beers I had during the last streaming I did with Drew on Knights of Nostalgia. The first was Pixels by Seminar Brewing, this is the second, the third will be Great Notion Brewing’s Fruit Monster, and the fourth will be Elder Pine Brewing and Blending’s Villeinage. (Spoiler alert: all four beers were really good.)

Aslin Beer Company is one of the many great breweries along the East Coast. In the middle of the East Coast; Virginia, Maryland, D.C, West Virginia, Delaware area; Aslin Beer Company, Burley Oak Brewing Company, The Veil, The Answer, Adroit Theory, Dewey Beer Company, are often mentioned on “must visit” and “top breweries” and “great” lists; they are usually the sought after, the traded for (the Facebook group ISO / FT), and the breweries that people mule back from. So needless to say, it’s fantastic to see some of these breweries (notably Aslin Beer Company and Burley Oak Brewing Company) popping up in distribution (distro) in the area. Breski’s Beverage on Eisenhower Boulevard (outside of Harrisburg between Harrisburg and Middletown) has been getting some wonderful cans from both breweries, as well as many other notable breweries, and is always worth checking in to see what they currently have in stock.

The mix-a-six selection at Breski’s and similar places are phenomenal right now (…phenomenally tasting; horrible on your wallet however). Last Tuesday before stopping at Tattered Flag for their Taco Tuesday, I stopped at Breski’s and got two mix-a-six six-packs (and paid about 60$), but picked up some tremendous beers; like the Isolation Anniversary Beer, two Great Notion beers, a pilsner (Billsner) from Burley Oak, a Black is Beautiful from Non Sequitur, Stickman’s The Growfather (can’t resist a good Godfather pun), two from Stranger Root’s Experimental Ales, Alarmist, Atlantic, etc. All in all, a wonderful selection of beers that you will be seeing reviews of (at least nine out of the 12 anyway, and hopefully in a timely fashion).

So, since I have a ton of reviews to do, and limited time (don’t we all limited time afterall?) I better get right down to this and do this beer review shouldn’t I?

Ok…. lets do it!

Beer: Isolation Anniversary Beer
Brewery: Aslin Beer Company
Style: IPA – Imperial / Double Milkshake
ABV: 9.4%
IBU: None
Untappd Description: (Blank)

Always a little disappointing to see the description left blank (its nice to see notes from the brewers / brewery, or maybe a joke or pun, or some context behind the beer or the beer name, or why or how it was brewed, if it was a collaboration, if its someone’s favorite recipe, or something at least), but I think this beer doesn’t really need a description, as it stands on its own.

Appearance is similar to that of a New England IPA; its opaque, its hazy, its bright, and orange, and glowing, but its even thicker than a normal New England IPA looks. It has ‘floaters’ especially if you don’t roll it before opening it up and pouring it. Its very well carbonated and has a great foamy white head, with a good pour it has just the right amount of head, with a bad pour I could picture this filling a whole glass with just head. The bubbles on it are nice and it leaves a nice lacing in the glass. It’s turbid, busy, and active.

The nose on this is hoppy, juicy hoppy, citrusy hoppy, but also creamy and vanilla and lactose, like silky smooth creamy milk with lots of fruity, citrus, juice, hops in it. I get mango, peach, citrus, a bit of zest, and a small whiff of grapefruit hop notes in this blended with the vanilla sweetness and cream of the lactose.

First sip… wow. Second sip… double wow. This has a LOT going on. Which is not a fault or problem at all; granted sometimes it can be, but not in this case. This has a lot going on, but all in proportion to the beer itself and within its style and how the beer is supposed to be. It’s not going off into all kinds of different places with varied and confusing mixtures of flavors, or with off flavors, or with competing notes. This just has a lot going on within it, but all with a purpose, all within the style, and all just how you should want it. Its a milkshake, its a hop bomb, its juicy, its turbid, its hazy, its strong, its delicious. Most importantly…. its delicious. And… did I mention yet…. that its delicious? This was hands down my favorite of the night, and it was the boldest, most flavorful, and had the biggest wallop of flavors, notes, aromas, hop, juiciness, and outright drinkability. I could easily kill a four pack of these, and probably in short time too; its just that drinkable. Which is scary at its 9.4% ABV, but it doesn’t feel heavy, or boozy, or knocking you on your face and teeth skittering across the cement floor of the basement kind of alcoholic; its just crushable but at a higher ABV. This is like drinking a smooth, juicy, silky, creamy, orange juice with the fruity citrus juicy hops in for extra flavor. Just like with aroma, I got mostly mango and peach with the flavor, but also got citrus, some zest, and a teeny weensy bit of grapefruit. I do have to say, as much as I could crank down a four pack of this, as someone with lactose intolerance, thats probably not a great idea. These milkshake IPAs and milkshake sours and such with some having an insane amount of lactose in them (this one probably has a rather large amount in it) typically give me some ‘gastro’ issues next morning when I wake up. One or so don’t usually hurt too much, but after that it starts pushing it, especially with the very heavy lacto ones.

After wrapping up the beer review here, I wanted to do a bit more research on the beer for the blog, so I did a quick Google search (ASLIN ISOLATION ANNIVERSARY BEER) and the first site was their online ordering form for the beer, which you can find here: Order Isolation Anniversary Beer. It also came with a description for the beer which reads:

Soft ripe yellow peach, mango, and passionfruit unite with explosively juicy results, and a full-bodied, perfectly zippy taste that finishes off with woody resin notes from Cypress & Sugar Maple wood. This is juicy fruit flesh squeezed into a hazy DIPA!! We’re raising a glass of this to all of you for your incredible support that has helped bring us to YEAR 6. Hang tight, this is not the only drop in our 5th Anniversary series! 🎉 🍻”

Hopefully that provides a bit of closure on the beer and fills in for the lack of a description on Untappd for everyone.
