Sadly, a fantastic and wonderful brewery from Humble, Texas has announced that they will be closing.

They took to social media to post the following:

Greetings craft beer friends.

It is with a heavy heart that today we have to announce the upcoming closure of our dear brewery. As many of you are aware, COVID-19 and the consequential economic/sociologic changes have been brutal to craft beer industry; we were no exception.

Early on we held hope that the economic climate would improve for our industry in time. We just had to “weather the storm”. We strapped down and pivoted every way possible to try and lessen the loss. Unfortunately it’s now nearly 3 years later and despite multiple rounds of loans and the employee retention credits keeping us floating, the outlook is even worse than when this started. Sadly, with no end in site to the financial losses and lack of viable assistance options we have no choice but to close this chapter in our lives.

We still have a handful of batches to finish which will hit markets soon and our last day of taproom operations will be January 6th. More details on these to be announced soon.

Finally, we couldn’t make a depressing announcement like this without reflecting on the positives. Over the last 6 years we have had the extreme pleasure of producing a product and brand that brought joy to thousands. The support we had from the community was amazing and we are beyond thankful for everyone who helped us get this far. Along the way we met exceptional people. We worked and made lasting relationships with exceptional people. These memories will last a lifetime for us and there is great solice in that.

Cheers to all,

-Justin, Mike, and the rest of the Ingenious crew.

Ingenious Brewing Company – Facebook Post

Over the past six years Ingenious Brewing has built up a reputation and a following. Garnering quite a fair bit of followers.

I can recall several wonderful Ingenious beers I’ve had at the past few Ffej of July’s.

It is such a shame to see them close up shop, and we sincerely hope all those involved find new wonderful employment soon, and that the void in their absence gets filled quickly – or at least sooner rather than later.

Scarlet’s first Ffej of July

Baby’s First Ffej

I never thought I’d bring a baby to a beer fest/local band concert festival, but here I am stroller and baby in tow.  Let me back up quick.  We quickly noticed if a song was playing somewhere, especially any singing and dancing on TV Scarlet’s face would light up.  I like to think it was all the concerts I attended, including last year’s Ffej of July when she was in the womb.  But I think it really started with Ben would sing to her through my belly every night.

Scarlet’s first Ffej of July (Friday Night, July 7th, 2023)

(You can see this, and other videos we have at our YouTube Channel here – The Beer Thrillers on YouTube.)

For the newbies; what is Ffej?  As described on the Ffej of July page “Ffej of July began its life as a modest party thrown by myself and my wife, Brandi, at our residence. The impetus for the event took shape when I realized we had a huge yard and did nothing with it other than cut the grass. So, in 2003, FOJ was born and has since become the infamous epic backyard bash we all know and love!”

(Note – this is a attendance by knowing event; you can only attend if you know someone who knows someone. If you know Ffej or know a good friend of Ffej’s you are welcome to come. This isn’t a free for all anyone can come right out the gate frat party.)

Ffej of July – Saturday, July 8th, 2023

At the last minute we brought my mom, so it was also Grandma SueAnn’s first FOJ.  With a bunch of classic rock cover bands and the entire vibe of FOJ I new my mom would love hanging out.  We got to sample beer from Bailey Mountain Brewery, Covered Bridge, Troeg’s Rusty Rail, Pizza Boy and Shy Bear.  The Bender’s Barleywine from Pizza Boy was most excellent.  It comes in on Untapped with a 11% ABV and a 4.09 rating.  Again, the Untapped score is way to low of a score.  This malty sweet beverage dances over your tongue and the caramel finish hides that sneaky 11%.  Then on Saturday we got to sample brews from Fluffy Bunny, Shy Bear, Meduseld Meadery, PA Alers, Troegs Brewing Company, and Fahnstock & Baer. (We didn’t keep a perfect list of what all we drank over the weekend, we were far too busy enjoying the music, hanging out with friends, chatting, chilling with Scarlet, enjoying the grub, and having an awesome time to worry about checking in everything we got to try on Untappd.)

Solar Federation ending Ffej of July 2023

Even though the vibe is laid back, as we all sit in our lawn chairs, Scarlet got to bang her head with a quiet riot cover and then she mellowed out to the Solar Federation.  If you are lucky enough to get invited to this private event (and remember – don’t show up uninvited – only show up if you are invited) don’t forget your lawn chair!  I hope this helped you catch the FOJ!

Drink More Beer!

The Battle of the Beer (Round 32 Results) (2022) https://thebeerthrillers.com/2022/07/08/the-battle-of-the-beer-round-32-results-2022/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-battle-of-the-beer-round-32-results-2022 Fri, 08 Jul 2022 10:30:16 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=9478
The Battle of the Beers (2022)

Round 32 Has Officially Ended

The first round (the round of 32) of our first ever ‘Battle of the Beers’ has officially ended. This is officially the results page of that first round, and the next round of voting (for the round of 16) will be up shortly.

There were a few upsets in the first round, but generally speaking, it was a pretty by the book first round. I will go over the rules of the tournament, and list the breweries, and then move onto the results of the first round.

Firstly, to find the first round of voting, you can click here: The Battle of the Beers (2022) – Round of 32 Voting. (And the original article here: The Battle of the Beers (2022)).

The Rules

The rules are quite simple, and they follow pretty much the same guideline as how I did the Battle of the Breweries. This is a 32 beer tournament bracket. Straight bracket, no reseeding after each round. The beers were ranked by their Untappd rating as of last night. In the cases where the beers had the same rating, I flipped a coin to determine which would be the higher seed.

There is no conferences, divisions, etc. – its just one simple straight 32 beer bracket.

The rules are pretty simple, every week the tournament bracket will be posted. You go down the line up of heads up matches and pick the beers you like. You can vote once per day. Make sure to share on your social media platforms to try and help the beer / breweries you want to win.

The voting schedule is:

  • Round of 32July 1st – July 7th at 11:59PM (EST)
  • Round of 16July 8th – July 14th at 11:59PM (EST)
  • Round of 8July 15th – July 21st at 11:59PM (EST)
  • Round of 4July 22nd – July 28th at 11:59PM (EST)
  • Round of 2July 29th – August 4th at 11:59PM (EST)

The selection process is mostly arbitrary (welcome to the world of The Beer Thrillers). Generally, there were a few simple rules I followed:

  • It had to be a beer I’ve had before
  • It had to have at least a 3 star rating on Untappd
  • I tried to pick some well known – nation wide distributed beers, some local breweries (local to us here at The Beer Thrillers), and a few “high end” / “high quality” / “top of the line” brewery flagships.

This is clearly not a list of beers based on any kind of science. This is purely meant for fun and just to have a good time. Please leave all feelings and egos at the door.

It is a single division bracket, instead of doing two conferences of 16 each, I decided to make it a simple one direct division of 32. So this will make for some interesting, and tough match – ups early on in the brackets for some. Its rather simple, but top of the bracket is 1. vs. 32, and the bottom of the bracket is 2. vs. 31. After that it alternated middle of the branch and stuff to keep it somewhat balanced, but in the dead center of the bracket you are going to get some tough early match – ups between similar number ranked beers. (A four vs. a six in the second round, and a seven vs. a nine as well!)

Round One Results

Ok, enough jabbering and jawing, lets get to the results, so we can get to voting for round 2!

  • 1. The Alchemist – Heady Topper (62 votes) defeated 32. Newcastle – Brown Ale (10 votes)

Ffej of July 18… And I Like It (2021) – Friday, Night One https://thebeerthrillers.com/2021/07/09/ffej-of-july-18-and-i-like-it-2021-friday-night-one/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=ffej-of-july-18-and-i-like-it-2021-friday-night-one Sat, 10 Jul 2021 03:45:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=7785

If your in the know, your in the know. One of the greatest parties – by invite only – is running two days this year. Ffej of July is back after a year break due to COVID-19 and is back better than ever. First night is in the bag and I personally had a blast, and I know everyone that went with me did too.

For the first time, Ffej of July is a two day event this year. With the first event happening on a Friday and then the main event all day Saturday. I just got home from night one, and here’s a quick recap of the day.

Due to having be the DD this year, I picked up Drew and Rome at his place, and we then made it to Annville for the party. We brought our contributions and put them in the sunroom and made our introductions to Brandi and Ffej. Running into Deuane and his wife, and several others.

It wasn’t looking good for a bit. From about 4:30PM to about 5:40PM it was a straight up massive thunderstorm in Hummelstown, and pretty much everywhere else in the vicinity (including Annville). But luckily the rains and the clouds dispersed, and we were able to have one kick ass party.

As we pulled into the parking lot area around 7:10PM, two guys were hanging out asking about the party. First rule of Fight Club…. err… I mean Ffej of July… well… wait, thats not really true either. Ok, here’s the thing, you can talk about Ffej of July, but you can’t just show up with “rando’s” from the Sheetz parking lot. You can bring guests, but its cool to do so with announcing them, and they must all be introduced to Ffej and Brandi. And obviously they must be cool people you can vouch for, because if anything happens, its on you.

After picking out our spot by the tree like we did last – two years ago – Ffej of July, Drew and Rome hit the beer cave and grabbed some suds, and we got down to listening to the bands. I milled around talking to people and we later made our way down to the Wheel of Zonks and other fun activities and then hung out at our spot. Rome had an eggplant sandwich and we all had Giant Center popcorn. Jason Miller and his wife Sherri showed up near the end, as well as Kelsey (from Drew’s stream) and her fiance Ben. So we had a jamming little section and loved the night’s music with UZO ending it – melting off our faces as they always do. (Thank god faces grow back!)

For those coming tomorrow, see ya out there, and happy Ffej of July everyone!

Pilger Ruh Brewing Needs Your Help https://thebeerthrillers.com/2020/09/23/pilger-ruh-brewing-needs-your-help/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=pilger-ruh-brewing-needs-your-help Thu, 24 Sep 2020 02:00:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=4402
The new home of Pilger Ruh Brewing

Pilger Ruh Brewing is currently looking for your help. They have finally found the location for their future home, in Pottsville Pennsylvania, they just need your help to get this dream up off the ground and get those taps flowing.

As with any older building, its going to need a lot of renovations, innovations, changes, and modifications to get it turned into a thriving business… let alone a bustling brewery. Which is one of the great thing about craft breweries – turning old buildings into brand new beautiful rustic but modern restaurants and breweries. Look at how Rubber Soul has turned the old police station (borough office building) in Hummelstown into their brewery. Or how Tattered Flag renovated their old building in Middletown. Its a common theme for many breweries; take an old building in a town they like, and renovate and modify it to meet their needs. It preserves the building, gives the brewery a unique look, helps the town, and helps the brewery. Seems like a win all around right?

Right.

So let’s help out Pilger Ruh Brewing get the money they need so they can do the same in Pottsville!

How can you help? Well, its really simple. Similar to a GoFundMe page, they have a indigogo page. You go there, donate what you can, and it all adds up. Want to help Pilger Ruh Brewing out and help them hit their goals and meet their dreams? Click here to donate: Pilger Ruh Brewing IndieGoGo Page.

Pilger Ruh Brewing

Why should you help out?

Well…. firstly, you would be helping a brand new brewery start up. You would be helping brewers, community members, friends, and family meet their dreams and achieve their goals. And secondly… you’ll get some perks out of it too!

Some perks include: free t-shirts, hoodies, limited edition glasswear, tickets to conventions, discounts on mug club memberships, getting to name some of their fermenters and tanks, brewing with them, hats, and getting to name some of their beers.

Thats a lot of incentive just right there to help them out.

Want to read their story? (You can go to their IndieGoGo page to read it) or read the following:

“Pilger Ruh Brewing is a new craft brewery coming to Schuylkill County PA! The whole dream started three years ago in the summer of 2017 when owners Tyler Budwash, Anthony Deppen, Conlan Budwash, along with friends Matt and Alex started brewing together.  We quickly joined the beer festival circuit and received great reviews from consumers all over the state.  Our brewery has over 14 years of combined brewing experience and we plan to bring great local beers of all styles to Pottsville PA in 2021!  Co-Owner Tyler has been homebrewing since 2013, started the Schuylkill County Brew Fest, and has been to over 250 different breweries in the US, a graduate of Kutztown University where he has a BA in Political Science.  He currently lives in Schuylkill County with his 2 children and girlfriend Corine.  Co-Owner Anthony Deppen has been homebrewing since 2017, world traveled professional wrestler, currently lives in New Cumberland PA with his wife Cassidy where they are expecting their first child in November 2020.  Head Brewer Conlan Budwash has been the assistant brewer at Snitz Creek the last 4 years, worked at Troegs Brewing Company the last 5 years, lives in Pine Grove, and graduated from the Brew Science course through HACC.

We started this campaign to help raise some money to cover additional renovations to complete our taproom and gain some extra working capital upon opening. (we aren’t asking for a lot).  Getting this brewery off the ground has been financially challenging for us, but we have faith that we can make this work no matter what the situation is. Instead of asking for money outright, we want to offer you a number of different options where you gain something as well.  No matter what you decide to give we are very appreciative of you for that and each and every person that has supported us on this journey.

Our goal is to raise at least $25,000 to complete our renovations (floors, walls, bathrooms, reinforcing the basement etc). As we said earlier, we want to offer you something for helping us.  Some of the perks we have lined up are limited edition glasses, shirts, deals on mug club memberships, naming tanks, brewing with us, exclusive beers, hoodies, hats, free tickets to events ran by us and more!  We set our goal a bit higher than we wanted to, so no matter what amount we reach, ALL proceeds will be going into getting the taproom ready for early next year.

The brewery plans to be very community oriented, which is why we chose to move our operations to Pottsville PA.  We want to bring something new to the area and help it gain more traction and give back to the community as much as we could.  Five years ago there weren’t any actual craft breweries in Schuylkill County, now after we open there will be technically six. Anyone that has had our beers over the last 3.5 years knows what to expect when we open, and that’s quality beers.  Our beers have been speaking for themselves at each and every event and we plan to continue that quality when we open next year.

We are aware that starting a new business comes with a ton of risks, especially when it comes to beer.  I mean we could fail in a year and be gone, but we will not let that happen because we cannot fail and we will not fail.  We chose the not so expensive route for all of our equipment, we bought things that made sense with our budget, not dropping thousands of dollars to look good or buy huge name brands.  This project has been trying to get off the ground  for 2 years now, we were unable to obtain funding from quite some time before we were able to save up a lot of our own money and gain a small SBA loan for our equipment.  Unfortunately COVID19 set up back a few months with getting our plans and permits ready, but we are now ready to go.  We’re very happy to be in the situation we are in now and want to finish up renovations so we can open and start paying back all of our debts.  Every last penny will be going towards the brewery, whether it be our glassware or something as small as a floor mat.

If our perks aren’t something you’re interested in you can still help.  We would greatly appreciate you sharing our Facebook page and inviting all of your friends to like it.  Give us a Like on Instagram, tell all your friends and family about us, and when we open come say hi!

Thank you!

-Tyler, Tony, and Conlan”

The building’s location is 213 N. Centre Street in Pottsville, PA. They have quite a few renovations they need to do to make the building into a brewery. Namely flooring, walls, reinforcing the basement, drainage, ditches, new bathrooms, etc.

Their current goal is 25,000$. As of posting time (9.23.20 – 10PM) they are up to 3,468$. So there is a ways to go, and every penny will help add up!

You most likely have met, known, or heard of Pilger Ruh Brewing, or the Budwash brothers from the various events and brewfests. They are typically a staple at the Litiz, Mount Hope, Lancaster, and Schukyll Brewfests (they actually run the Schukyll Brewfest). They are also usually seen at Ffej of July, at the Kegs and Eggs at Rotunda, and many other events, brewfests, and charity events. They have been working at Troegs Brewing and Snitz Creek Brewery, behind the scenes things, and as of now, brewing for Snitz Creek. You can also find their own Pilger Ruh beers on tap at the Snitz Creek Annville (the old Funck’s – right next to the Fort Indiantown Gap Cemetery) location.

I’ve gotten to know all three quite well over the years, from different events, from the Central PA Whalerz, from Tyler’s love of the civil war, all three’s love for professional wrestling (Anthony Deppen is actually a professional wrestler – Tony Deppen – who wrestles for promotions such as Ring of Honor [ROH], amongst many others), and their collaborations with Tattered Flag.

They are all a bunch of great dudes, so let’s help them make this happen. The world needs more great beers and more great breweries and brewers. So lets band together and help them out!

Beer Review: Fuzzy Nudge (Troegs Independent Brewing) https://thebeerthrillers.com/2019/08/29/beer-review-fuzzy-nudge-troegs-independent-brewing/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=beer-review-fuzzy-nudge-troegs-independent-brewing Thu, 29 Aug 2019 23:30:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=1974
Fuzzy Nudge by Troegs Independent Brewing

Don’t adjust your set, this isn’t an orange juice blog, where I review the latest pulpy craft artisanal handmade orange juice…. nope…. this is still The Beer Thrillers and this is still beer reviews.

This is a fun one-off from Troegs and named by a friend of the blog – Ffej Herb. Ffej recently had his Ffej of July (an amazing party) and when not rocking out or traveling from brewery to brewery or running his own blog (The Pour Travelers) he works at Troegs, and despite working for them nearly from the beginning back at the Paxton Street building, this is the first he’s gotten to name.

This is just one of those words and phrases and names that Ffej has always liked and has been throwing at the Trogner brothers since day one to try and get used as a beer name, and they finally acquiesced to him. And they picked one heck of a beer to do it with!

In honor of Ffej, and his Ffej of July, lets break down this delicious brewski:

Fuzzy Nudge, named by Ffej, in a Ffej glass.

Beer: Fuzzy Nudge
Brewery: Troegs Independent Brewing
Style: IPA – Imperial / Double
ABV: 9%
IBU: (None Listed)
Untappd Write-Up: Just what the heck is a Fuzzy Nudge? We didn’t know either when someone here tossed it out as a beer name. Then along comes this Double IPA out of our Scratch Series. An oat-dominated malt bill gives it a super-soft mouthfeel, and it’s loaded with 25 pounds per barrel of fuzzy peaches and apricots. A hop combo of Lotus, El Dorado and Azacca complements the stone fruit with notes of orange rind and pear, and a new-to-us yeast pulls in flavors reminiscent of gummy peach rings. Finally, brown sugar balances the brightness of the fruit and nudges fermentation of this lovable double IPA to full fuzziness. Voila, Fuzzy Nudge! We taste: juicy peach, orange rind, brown sugar.

These are definitely carbonated, so no worries there on that one. (As my second picture shows you). And natural light or artificial light, it still looks like orange juice. It has a beautiful orange glowing complexion, and looks more on the “Hazy NE IPA” spectrum then on the “IPA” spectrum.

The aroma, as soon as you crack it is full of fruity IPA notes. It has a base “Troegs IPA” smell to it, but ontop of that, it has many fruity IPA notes. Ripe notes of peach, apricot, orange, all rolled up into one big hop ball and poof, explodes in your nose.

Taste is smooth as silk and goes down even smoother, belying its 9% ABV. Another Troegs IPA hall-mark it seems, ~9% ABV = dangerous grounds with Troegs, because you won’t feel it until number 2 or 3. This has a lot of peach and apricot up front and then mellows out with the malt and hop notes, going from fruity to a bit of bitterness and kind of coalescing with a bit of a sweet brown sugary taste at the end. Making this a very nice, well rounded beer. Playing over the whole spectrum of your tastebuds.

My Untappd Rating: ****
Global Untappd Rating: 3.96 (as of 8.29.19)

Thanks for reading, and hoped you like this! Ffej of July was a blast and was great to hang out with a lot of the Troegs crew, and this is just one of many reasons why Troegs has been making some fantastic beers. People they have working for them love beer, care about beer, and care about the people drinking their beer, and you can tell.

As always, thanks for reading everyone. Cheers!
