In a story that’s sending ripples through Pennsylvania’s craft beer scene, Sly Fox Brewing, a well-known name with a strong local following, has been ordered to pay nearly $200,000 in back wages, damages, and penalties. This decision comes after an investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) found the brewery in violation of federal wage laws.

Let’s dive into what happened, why it matters, and what it says about supporting fair practices in the restaurant and craft beer industry.

Sly Fox Brewing Company logo

What Happened at Sly Fox Brewing?

The Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division discovered that two Sly Fox locations in Pittsburgh—the Taphouse at Point State Park (300 Liberty Avenue) and the Highline Brewery (46 S. 4th Street) — violated the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Specifically, they allowed managers to participate in the tip pool, a clear no-go under federal law.

For restaurant and brewery workers who rely on tips as a vital part of their income, this is more than just a policy violation—it’s a significant financial hit.

The Breakdown of Penalties:

  • Back wages recovered: $84,710
  • Liquidated damages: $84,710
  • Civil penalties: $15,435

In total, the brewery was required to pay $184,855 to rectify the situation.

Why This Matters

Craft beer is a community-driven industry, built on passion, creativity, and collaboration. But like any business, it must also adhere to fair labor practices.

“Restaurant workers often make low wages and depend on every dollar earned, including tips, to help support themselves and their families,” said John DuMont, the Wage and Hour District Director in Pittsburgh. His sentiment highlights the importance of respecting the hardworking people behind the scenes.

Whether you’re pouring pints, running food, or cleaning up after hours, every role contributes to the experience we beer lovers enjoy. Ensuring fair wages and proper treatment is essential for a thriving industry.

What Does This Mean for the Craft Beer Community?

For craft beer enthusiasts and brewery owners alike, this story serves as a wake-up call. It’s a reminder to support breweries that not only produce great beer but also take care of their employees.

For Brewery Owners:

If you’re running or thinking about starting a brewery, this is a clear signal to get your labor practices in order. The craft beer community values transparency and fairness, and maintaining these values is crucial to building a loyal customer base.

For Beer Lovers:

Next time you visit a brewery or restaurant, consider the people making it all happen. From your bartender to the back-of-house staff, everyone deserves fair pay for their hard work.

About Sly Fox

Sly Fox Brewing Company is a Pennsylvania craft beer staple, founded in 1995, and known for its bold flavors and innovative approach to brewing. With locations spanning the state, including the renowned Taphouse at Point State Park and the Highline Brewery in Pittsburgh, Sly Fox has built a reputation for quality beers that cater to a wide range of palates. From their flagship Pikeland Pils to seasonal favorites like Christmas Ale, the brewery offers a mix of traditional styles and creative brews that keep customers coming back. Over the years, Sly Fox has become a go-to destination for beer lovers and a key player in the local craft beer community.

Beyond its beers, Sly Fox is deeply rooted in Pennsylvania’s culture. Their involvement in events like the Sly Fox Bock Fest & Goat Race showcases their passion for creating experiences that bring people together. This blend of creativity and community engagement has helped the brewery maintain its popularity, even in a competitive craft beer landscape. However, recent labor-related controversies remind us that every business has room for growth and improvement. As Sly Fox continues to evolve, many hope it will prioritize not only great beer but also the well-being of its dedicated staff.

A Message to Other Employers

The Department of Labor isn’t taking violations lightly. “This legal action recovers the workers’ hard-earned wages and sends a message to other restaurant employers that violations come at a cost,” said Samantha N. Thomas, the Philadelphia Regional Solicitor of Labor.

The case against Sly Fox Brewing reinforces the importance of following labor laws and ensuring that tipped workers receive their full earnings.

Wrapping Up

While Sly Fox Brewing is known for its craft beer, this situation casts a shadow over the brand’s reputation. It’s a reminder that success in the craft beer world isn’t just about the product; it’s about the people.

As craft beer fans, we can use this moment to celebrate and support breweries that prioritize fairness and community. Let’s raise a glass to good beer—and to doing the right thing.

Aurochs Brewing Company Announce Their Upcoming Closure

Aurochs Brewing Company Will Cease Operations by End of 2024

Aurochs Brewing Company located at 8321 Ohio River Blvd, Emsworth, PA 15202 will be ceasing operations by the end of 2024. Its the start of the new month, but sadly also the beginning of the end for Aurochs Brewing Company. Over 10 years in business (established in 2012) and unfortunately they have had to make the tough and difficult decision to close by the end of the year. Known as one of the only gluten-free producing breweries not just in Pennsylvania, but in the greater east coast region; Aurochs Brewing made a name for themsleves over the 12 years of their operations.

Aurochs Brewing Company

Aurochs Brewing Company, located just outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, specializes in crafting naturally gluten-free beers. Founded by Ryan and Doug, both of whom have personal experiences with gluten intolerance—Ryan diagnosed in his twenties and Doug with Celiac disease since childhood—the brewery was born from a desire to create flavorful craft beers that are safe for those with gluten sensitivities. Since its inception, Aurochs has produced over 40 different styles of gluten-free beer, focusing on high-quality ingredients such as millet, quinoa, and buckwheat sourced from dedicated gluten-free suppliers.
The brewery has gained recognition for its commitment to quality and taste, winning a Gold Medal at the 2020 Great American Beer Festival for its Aurochs Hazy IPA. Their core lineup includes six year-round offerings: Aurochs Blonde Ale, Session IPA, Amber Ale, Porter, Light Lager, and Hazy IPA. Each beer is brewed in a dedicated gluten-free facility, ensuring that all products are free from wheat, barley, and rye. This meticulous process not only guarantees safety for consumers but also emphasizes the brewery’s mission to provide great-tasting beer without compromise.
In addition to their brewing operations, Aurochs has embraced modern distribution methods by offering direct shipping within Pennsylvania and expanding to neighboring states. The brewery’s taproom invites visitors to enjoy a variety of beers on draft alongside gluten-free snacks. With a focus on community and sustainability, Aurochs Brewing Company continues to grow its customer base while maintaining its commitment to producing exceptional gluten-free craft beer for all occasions.

Aurochs Brewing Closing by End of 2024

The Announcement

Aurochs Brewing Company posted the following on social media just two hours ago:

The End of our Story
Thank you for your support of Aurochs Brewing Company through its existence. Over 10 years ago, we set out with the goal of “changing the way the world experiences gluten-free beer”. In that time we have seen that happen many times over and are extremely grateful to have been one part of that larger evolution.
Today, it is with a heavy heart that we announce that Aurochs Brewing Company will be ceasing operations by the end of the year 2024.
We are proud to have brewed great-tasting, award-winning, naturally gluten-free beers that have resonated with many of you. Through your patronage we have been able to grow our footprint and meet the needs of gluten-free beer drinkers across our region.
With the help of our amazing staff and supporters we have given this endeavor everything we have. After years of hard work, countless late or sleepless nights, navigating the challenges of a global pandemic, and the rigors of building and scaling a dedicated gluten-free brewery our founder team has run out of gas. Although the brewery continues to grow in our home market, we do not have the personal resources to go to the next level or to continue operations beyond this year.
We are eternally grateful to our customers, partners, investors, and employees (past and present) who have made this journey so special. From the moment we opened our doors 10 years ago, you have shown up consistently, supporting Aurochs and pushing our dream forward.
We plan to open our tasting room while there is still beer available. We will communicate about hours of operations and opportunities to purchase the last batches of Aurochs.
Additionally, beer will be available for shipping throughout Pennsylvania only while supplies last. Any orders placed this weekend will be shipped out on Tuesday (11/5) with tracking information.
Thank you for taking this journey with us, thank you for your passion and support.
Doug & Ryan

The following comes via Untappd.

The Alchemist is a regional brewery from Stowe, VT. They have 75 unique beers and over 770,000 ratings, with a global average rating of 4.33 (as of 7.18.24). Their Untappd description reads: “John and Jen Kimmich originally opened The Alchemist as a 60 seat brew pub in the village of Waterbury in 2003. After eight years of success and growing popularity, they decided to open a small production brewery in Waterbury in 2011. Not long after, Tropical Storm Irene flooded much of the state, causing widespread damage in downtown Waterbury, including the Pub. Forced to shut the Pub doors, the Kimmichs focused their efforts on the new Cannery and distributing Heady Topper locally. Pop-up truck sales, long lines in Waterbury, and a booming craft beer scene led up to the opening of the 2016 Stowe Brewery and Visitor’s Center. Today, The Alchemist operates two breweries in Waterbury and Stowe and distributes Heady Topper and Focal Banger throughout the state, with the occasional out-of-state shipment. Limited specialty beers are released at the Stowe Brewery only, where curbside beer sales have been our only public contact since March 2020.

Mindful Brewing is rebranding as Chimera Brewing

Mindful Brewing is Rebranding as Chimera Brewing

Mindful Brewing is back… sort of. Its going to be back, and its going to now be called ‘Chimera Brewing’, with a rebranding, or a transformation if you will. We announced that they would be “temporarily closing” back on October 29th (announcing that their temporary closure would start on the 6th of November). (See here: Mindful Brewing Announces Temporary Closure.)

With new ownership and new leadership behind the brand, the transformation will begin with a new name – Chimera Brewing replacing Mindful Brewing. Currently the target is “late summer” for their re-opening. We will keep you updated with news as it gets close to their opening.

The Announcement

What’s up everyone! It’s the new owners here – your pals from Galley Group. Some of you might know us from Federal Galley in the North Shore or the newly re-opened Arthur’s Korner Pub in Mt. Lebanon. As you already know, there are some changes happening here at Mindful Brewing. We’re excited to introduce you to Chimera Brewing, a brand new brewery where our focus is on craft, cuisine, and community.
In the next few weeks, we’ll be re-branding Mindful Brewing to Chimera Brewing which means we’ve already started planning to (hopefully🤞) open for all of you come late summer. We have a lot of exciting things in store like a brewer apprenticeship program, brand new beers, and a fully re-vamped menu.
We know how important Mindful Brewing was to the South Hills community and promise to continue to provide a great atmosphere for your friends, family, and others alike.

Necromancer Brewing is Closing Permanently https://thebeerthrillers.com/2024/02/19/necromancer-brewing-is-closing-permanently/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=necromancer-brewing-is-closing-permanently Tue, 20 Feb 2024 00:30:32 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=14410

Necromancer Brewing is Closing Permanently

Necromancer Brewing is Closing Permanently

We reported on February 13th that Necromancer Brewing was Temporarily Closing…. well, it is now officially permanently closing. There was talks of their “ongoing issues” with their liquor license, and how they were having issues with getting it renewed, and they made their Facebook post stating that they would be temporarily closed due to that. It seems there was more issues than just a liquor license behind the scenes, and they are permanently closing. So a funeral is to be held at the Necromancer Brewery – 2257 Babcock Blvd, Pittsburgh, PA 15237, and free beer will be given away – on Thursday and Friday of this week (2.22.24 and 2.23.24).

Come to Our Funeral

Necromancer Brewing posted to Instagram (not Facebook) about their announcement of permanent closure, and told everyone to come to their brewery on Thursday (2.22.24) and Friday (2.23.24) to “celebrate” and to come to their funeral.

Their announcement reads:

Our time has come.

After taking time to pause this past week and evaluate our future, we’ve come to the difficult decision to close our doors.

We’re so proud of our team and all they’ve accomplished these past nearly 3 years. Our closure is no reflection of the quality of their work, their dedication, or the blood, sweat, and tears put into Necromancer. It’s an unfortunate financial decision, and one we do not make lightly. Between operating costs that continue to rise, and the overall state of the industry – there isn’t much room for error.

This closure unfortunately also means that our plans for Greenfield’s Midnight Whistler Pub will not come to fruition. We’d like to thank the Greenfield community for their support and excitement, and we truly hope that the neighborhood gets the watering hole it deserves in the very near future.

We respect the hell out of the breweries in our community who will continue the legacy of beer making in this city. It’s an immense feat to bring beer to your glass. We encourage you to continue to support others in Pittsburgh’s brewing community. It’s a tough industry.

This week we’ll be open Thursday and Friday from 4-10pm for one last go.
– All beer will be free to consume or take. Limit 1 case per person.
– Any on-site consumption must be done responsibly.
– We’ll have a virtual tip jar. 100% of all proceeds will go to our staff. If you grab a 4-pack, or pint, please contribute.
– And all merch and glassware will be for sale. Inner Circle and Founder’s Club members will be able to reserve up to (2) cases of beer and 2 free items while supplies last.

Please come and say goodbye.

Thank you for your support over the years. We are honored to have been a part of your lives – however big or small.

Necromancer Brewing – Instagram Post

News of Their Closing and Reactions

Their Facebook account still doesn’t have a permanent closure post, and their last post is dated February 13th, announcing the temporary closure.

Necromancer Brewing was open for a little under three years and Midnight Whistler, a second location, which was planned to open in the former Hough’s Taproom in Greenfield are both closing.

A beer blog for the state discussed in “detail” with the ownership about their reasons for closing. Which for most people reading, only raised more questions, concerns, and even outright red flags. The owners stated the costs of liquor license, fees, and other things, as well as putting emphasis and blame on the government and state…. rather than possibly where its due. (More like financial decisions, regarding the opening of the second taproom, the remodeling of their current location, and much more.)

Two Reddit posts; one in the Pittsburgh subreddit and one in the Pittsburgh beers subreddit posit more information, albeit mostly hearsay, but there is more to glean from this than the obviously one sided blog post. The reddit posts can be read here:

A news article by TribLive also provides more information: Necromancer Brewing Co. closing, 2nd location won’t open.

Butler said not being able to afford renewing the license, which is $3,000, is only part of the scenario for closing. There are several taxes and the cost of yeast and grain has gone up by 500% over the past 18 months, he said.

As for the Hough’s location, he said the building presented unforeseen issues that they could not get over and it became too much.

“We ran out of money,” Butler said. “And we couldn’t continue operating this way. We had some missteps that we couldn’t recover from. This is not a high-margin business. It is difficult to make ends meet.”

Necromancer Brewing Co. closing, 2nd location won’t open

There is a lot to pack through the comments section on those two reddit posts, as well as the news article. There seems to be a lot of varying thoughts on the brewery, and the owner – in particular Ben Butler. One commenter stating that Butler and the other owner (Butler had 75% shared interest, and the other owner had 25%) didn’t talk for the past year, and only communicated via lawyers.

Much talk on their Facebook, Instagram, as well as craft beer groups (and those reddit posts) is about the mug club memberships, which was paid just a bit ago. People paid 75-200$ for varying levels of memberships, and just under two months ago, for this upcoming year. Many of these customers feel blindsided and upset about the way the closing has been handled.

Liquor License

PA Liquor License – Necromancer Brewing

Anyone can use the PLCB website to view and look at liquor license records, as well as violations and other things by breweries. The search on the site lets you do it by county, city, license, name of operation, or owner(s). The results on the Necromancer Brewing shows that their license expired Dec. 31st 2023, though they have an active brewery storage license good for 2024.

He said he was told he could be put in jail if he tried to sell beer without a renewed liquor license and that the inventory can’t be transferred to another business owner.

He said there is a lot of beer.

Shawn Kelly, spokesman for the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board in Harrisburg, confirmed that without a valid liquor license, beer can be given away.

However, he added that it “can be complicated.”

Necromancer Brewing Co. closing, 2nd location won’t open

So it appears they are able to host their free beer give away on Thursday and Friday, as long as it remains completely free. They also need to be careful of where patrons go with the beer and how they consume it on property.

Necromancer Brewing

Necromancer Brewing was a safe space and very positive for the LGBTQ+ community. They received national news attention with the release of their “Gayer” beer. Some in the Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh beer reddit communities have stated that Ben Butler used this as a means to an end, rather than true support and altruistic motives for the community. Either way, they were a positive force for good in the LGBTQ+ community, and it is disappointing to see the brewery lost and the community to lose this support, safe space, and inclusive environment.

The following information comes via Untappd.

Necromancer Brewing is a nano brewery from Pittsburgh, PA. They have 167 unique beers and over 20,000 ratings, with a global average rating of 3.89 (as of 2.13.24). Their Untappd description reads: “trends + familiars + resurrections ”

Necromancer Brewing is Temporarily Closing

Necromancer Brewing is Temporarily Closing

Necromancer Brewing just posted a little bit ago that they found out their liquor license was currently not in good standing (and hadn’t been since Friday), and so they are unable to make or sell beer (or any alcohol). According to their Facebook page they will be closed for just the remainder of the week.

Necromancer Brewing is just shy of three years old, and has made national news for their “Gayer” beer.

Necromancer Brewing is located at 2257 Babcock Blvd, Pittsburgh, PA 15237.

The Announcement

We learned on Friday evening that there was an issue with our liquor license, rendering us unable to sell (or package) beer.
We’ve been doing everything we can to find out what the issue is and rectify it; but have yet to be able to come to any conclusions.
And as bad ass and anti-establishment as we’d like to think we are, we just aren’t willing to risk it and will be closed for at least this week.
We are hopeful that there is a simple error or miscommunication occurring that can be quickly fixed, but if we’re honest we just aren’t sure how long this might take. We will keep you updated as soon as we have more information, but for now just know that we appreciate you and your support and we hope we’ll have more info to share very soon.

Necromancer Brewing – Facebook Post

We will keep you updated as we get more information on their ongoing issues with their liquor license. Hopefully they can get this resolved quickly and efficiently.

This Pittsburgh Pale Ale is leaving early, too early perhaps, leaving many with a morning headache, blood shot red eyes, and a thirst on the plane ride out of Pittsburgh.

Brewed on their small research and development ‘pilot system’, The Red Eye is a “Pittsburgh” Pale Ale, clocking in at 6%. The pilot system for Pittsburgh Brewing Company is a 10 – barrel system used to try out new ideas and to test new thoughts.

As per Pittsburgh Brewing Company’s description:

The Red Eye features imported German caramel rye, giving it a distinct amber hue while also providing piney, earthy, and floral hop notes with a clean bite, thanks to the foundation of Amarillo and Chinook.

It is then marinated in the finishing tank with the concentrated oils of Crosby CXG Chinook, intensifying the tropical and citrus notes. All these flavors combine to create the perfect Pittsburgh pale ale, standing at 6% ABV, to be enjoyed by all.

The world didn’t need another Pale Ale, so we crafted ours to combine our favorite elements of all generations of

Amarillo and Chinook create a classic foundation of piney, earthy, and floral hop notes with a clean, bitter bite.

Imported Wayermann®️ German Caramel Ryelend a distinct amber hue and depth to the hops’ spicy undertones.

In the finishing tank, the concentrated oils of Crosby CXG Chinook intensify the tropical and citrus notes hopheads crave.

The result is at once familiar and singular. forward-looking, yet a product of the moment.

We hope that’s enough to earn a spot in your fridge. Available now in our Brewery Store.
