In a bold move reshaping Tennessee’s craft beer landscape, Wiseacre Brewing Company of Memphis has officially acquired Bearded Iris Brewing, one of Nashville’s most iconic breweries. The deal unites the creators of Tiny Bomb and Homestyle, the two best-selling craft beers in the state, under one banner—while both brands continue to operate independently.

Wiseacre Brewing Company

Two Titans of Tennessee Craft Beer Join Forces

This landmark acquisition—first reported by Memphis Business Journal—brings together the state’s two largest craft breweries, combining their strengths while preserving their distinct personalities. Fans of Bearded Iris can rest easy: the brewery will retain its name, leadership, and Nashville taproom presence, even as production shifts to Wiseacre’s cutting-edge Downtown Memphis facility.

“This partnership was born out of mutual respect,” said Wiseacre co-founder Kellan Bartosch, who has long known Bearded Iris co-founder Kavon Togrye through their work on the Tennessee Craft Brewers Guild. “We’ve admired their commitment to quality, branding, and community, and we’re thrilled to join forces in a way that strengthens both of our missions.”

Strategic Growth Rooted in Tennessee Soil

The seeds of the partnership were planted when Bearded Iris found itself at a crossroads—facing the end of its lease and outgrowing its Germantown production space. With Wiseacre already exploring ways to deepen its investment in Tennessee’s craft scene, the timing aligned perfectly.

“Wiseacre has been interested in expanding through complementary brands right here in our home state,” Bartosch explained. “When Kavon reached out, it made sense. They were looking for a long-term solution to maintain their brand’s high standards and grow their distribution footprint. We had the space, infrastructure, and shared values to make it happen.”

That space includes Wiseacre’s state-of-the-art brewery, opened in 2020, which now serves as a central production hub for both breweries.

“Our strengths complemented each other seamlessly,” said Togrye. “From day one, it felt like more than a partnership—it felt like a chance to amplify what we both do best.”

What Changes—and What Stays the Same

Bearded Iris Brewery

Despite the acquisition, Bearded Iris will continue to operate independently, maintaining its leadership team—Togrye, Paul Vaughn, and Matt Miller—as well as its branding, beer lineup, and taprooms. The Germantown production site will wind down, but the Germantown taproom and Sylvan Supply location on Nashville’s west side will stay open and receive continued investment.

“Germantown is where our story began,” Togrye emphasized. “We’re proud of our roots and committed to staying connected to the community that supported us from the start.”

Wiseacre, meanwhile, continues to anchor itself firmly in Memphis. Since opening in 2013, the brewery has grown into the largest craft brewery in Tennessee, expanding to 21 states and producing nearly 30,000 barrels in 2024. Founders Kellan and Davin Bartosch—Memphis natives—built Wiseacre with a deep understanding of both the art and business of brewing, combining experience at institutions like Sierra Nevada and the Siebel Institute.

A Unified Future with Local Focus

At a time when many craft breweries are feeling the squeeze from shifting consumer habits and rising costs, this deal bucks the trend of out-of-state buyouts or closures. It’s a local-first strategy with long-term vision.

“This isn’t about selling out or scaling up for the sake of it,” Bartosch said. “It’s about reinforcing what makes Tennessee’s craft beer scene special—authenticity, community, and quality beer.”

Togrye echoed the sentiment: “This deal isn’t just about survival. It’s about thriving, growing, and preserving what our fans love most. Homestyle and Tiny Bomb are already Tennessee’s most beloved craft beers. Now they’re working together.”

With Wiseacre and Bearded Iris officially united, Tennessee’s two biggest beer brands are poised to write the next chapter in Southern craft beer—on their own terms, and on home turf.

True Fact: I graduated high school with Matt Miller (Lower Dauphin grads of 2004), and we were both in the Falcon Flash (high school newspaper) together. Also just recently, through Drunk Phils Fans ran into another 2004 Lower Dauphin alumni – Doug Hendrickson / Smith. Always interesting to see how small the world really is.

For More Information on Bearded Iris Brewing

The following comes via Untappd.

Bearded Iris Brewing is listed as a regional brewery from Nashville, TN. (And are already listed as a subsidiary of Wiseacre Brewing). They have 38 unique beers and over 630,000 ratings. They have a global average rating of 4.06 (as of 8.1.25). Their Untappd description reads: “WHEN YOU SIT DOWN WITH A BEER, YOU’RE AFTER SOMETHING. Maybe it’s nuanced layers of flavor, the siren call of a favorite hop, or to test your skill identifying stone fruit tasting notes. Maybe you’re chasing the new or craving the familiar, perhaps you just want to kick back for a drink with friends—and order another of the same. At Bearded Iris, our beers meet you where you are and deliver the experience you seek, whatever it might be, because that’s what we believe makes beer worth drinking. CULTIVATE VARIETY DRIVES US AT BIBCO. (WE’RE NOT KIDDING.) With a menu that skews heavily toward IPAs, DIPAs, and pales, it can appear that we don’t, in fact, cultivate much “variety.” But here’s the thing: we’re not looking to bombard you with a checklist of styles. Instead, we know that each hop varietal and every intentionally selected ingredient contains a multitude of possibilities that can be deliberately unlocked and unleashed, then honed and hemmed in tightly, to construct a pint that’s unapologetically itself, memorably composed, and fun to drink. Every time. Regardless of style. To us, that’s the variety worth cultivating. And that’s what we bring to your table.

Whether you’re a seasoned aficionado or a curious newcomer, this guide is your passport to the exciting world of craft beer in 2024.

Craft Beer Trends to Watch in 2024:

  1. Sustainability and Eco-Friendly Brewing: As consumers become more environmentally conscious, breweries are adopting sustainable practices, from sourcing local ingredients to implementing energy-efficient brewing processes.
  2. Non-Alcoholic Craft Beers Gain Popularity: With health and wellness trends on the rise, non-alcoholic (NA) craft beers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, offering delicious alternatives without the buzz.
  3. Innovative Ingredients and Fusion Styles: Brewers are getting creative with unexpected ingredients (think fruits, spices, and even seaweed) and blending traditional beer styles to create entirely new taste experiences.

Top Craft Breweries to Visit in 2024:

  1. New Heights Brewing Company, Nashville, TN: Known for their bold IPAs and innovative seasonal releases, New Heights is a must-visit for those seeking cutting-edge craft beers.
  2. Eco Brew Co, Portland, OR: Leading the charge in sustainable brewing, Eco Brew Co offers an impressive lineup of eco-friendly beers that are as good for the planet as they are for your palate.
  3. Fusion Craft Ales, San Diego, CA: If you’re intrigued by the idea of beer that breaks the mold, Fusion Craft Ales specializes in blending styles and incorporating exotic ingredients for a truly unique tasting experience.

Must-Try Beers of 2024:

  1. Galaxy Hopper IPA, New Heights Brewing Company: A hop-forward IPA with vibrant notes of citrus and tropical fruit, showcasing the best of Galaxy hops.
  2. Green Future Lager, Eco Brew Co: A crisp, clean lager that’s not only refreshing but also brewed entirely with renewable energy and sustainable practices.
  3. Mango Chili Wit, Fusion Craft Ales: This adventurous witbier combines the sweetness of mango with a hint of chili heat, creating a perfect balance of flavors that’s both refreshing and exciting.

Craft Beer Pairing Tips:

To enhance your craft beer experience, consider pairing your beers with complementary foods. For example, the bold flavors of an IPA pair beautifully with spicy dishes, while the subtle nuances of a Belgian witbier are a perfect match for seafood. Experimenting with pairings can unlock new flavor profiles and elevate your craft beer journey.

Conclusion:

A flight of craft beers.

The craft beer landscape in 2024 is teeming with innovation, diversity, and passion. By exploring the latest trends, visiting standout breweries, and sampling exceptional beers, you’re not just enjoying a beverage; you’re participating in a global movement that celebrates creativity, community, and craftsmanship. 7th Anniversary Beer Fest – Event Brite Page

Fidens?! Adroit Theory? Xul Brewing? RAR Brewing? Southern Grist? Resident Culture? Burley Oak? Dewey? Crooked Crab? Other Half? Fourscore? Dancing Gnome? Black Flag?

Sign us up!

This is an absolute star studded lineup, and we can’t wait. Amy and I will be going. Looking to meet up with a lot of the Central PA Whalerz and hopefully doing a beer share afterwards as well. (Because… why not do a beer share after a mammoth four hour brewfest?)

Unlike the 5th Anniversary Event where Amy and I took the Friday off, and made a huge brewery trip out of it, this year, we’re just going to be going down Saturday morning, hitting up the brewfest, spending the night, and then hitting a few breweries on the way home Sunday. Still a lot of fun, but possibly a little bit more laid back. (Possibly.)
