Aurochs Brewing Company Will Cease Operations by End of 2024

Aurochs Brewing Company located at 8321 Ohio River Blvd, Emsworth, PA 15202 will be ceasing operations by the end of 2024. Its the start of the new month, but sadly also the beginning of the end for Aurochs Brewing Company. Over 10 years in business (established in 2012) and unfortunately they have had to make the tough and difficult decision to close by the end of the year. Known as one of the only gluten-free producing breweries not just in Pennsylvania, but in the greater east coast region; Aurochs Brewing made a name for themsleves over the 12 years of their operations.

Aurochs Brewing Company, located just outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, specializes in crafting naturally gluten-free beers. Founded by Ryan and Doug, both of whom have personal experiences with gluten intolerance—Ryan diagnosed in his twenties and Doug with Celiac disease since childhood—the brewery was born from a desire to create flavorful craft beers that are safe for those with gluten sensitivities. Since its inception, Aurochs has produced over 40 different styles of gluten-free beer, focusing on high-quality ingredients such as millet, quinoa, and buckwheat sourced from dedicated gluten-free suppliers.

The brewery has gained recognition for its commitment to quality and taste, winning a Gold Medal at the 2020 Great American Beer Festival for its Aurochs Hazy IPA. Their core lineup includes six year-round offerings: Aurochs Blonde Ale, Session IPA, Amber Ale, Porter, Light Lager, and Hazy IPA. Each beer is brewed in a dedicated gluten-free facility, ensuring that all products are free from wheat, barley, and rye. This meticulous process not only guarantees safety for consumers but also emphasizes the brewery’s mission to provide great-tasting beer without compromise.

In addition to their brewing operations, Aurochs has embraced modern distribution methods by offering direct shipping within Pennsylvania and expanding to neighboring states. The End of our Story

Thank you for your support of Aurochs Brewing Company through its existence. Over 10 years ago, we set out with the goal of “changing the way the world experiences gluten-free beer”. In that time we have seen that happen many times over and are extremely grateful to have been one part of that larger evolution.

Today, it is with a heavy heart that we announce that Aurochs Brewing Company will be ceasing operations by the end of the year 2024.

We are proud to have brewed great-tasting, award-winning, naturally gluten-free beers that have resonated with many of you. Through your patronage we have been able to grow our footprint and meet the needs of gluten-free beer drinkers across our region.

With the help of our amazing staff and supporters we have given this endeavor everything we have. After years of hard work, countless late or sleepless nights, navigating the challenges of a global pandemic, and the rigors of building and scaling a dedicated gluten-free brewery our founder team has run out of gas. Although the brewery continues to grow in our home market, we do not have the personal resources to go to the next level or to continue operations beyond this year.

We are eternally grateful to our customers, partners, investors, and employees (past and present) who have made this journey so special. From the moment we opened our doors 10 years ago, you have shown up consistently, supporting Aurochs and pushing our dream forward.

We plan to open our tasting room while there is still beer available. We will communicate about hours of operations and opportunities to purchase the last batches of Aurochs.

Additionally, beer will be available for shipping throughout Pennsylvania only while supplies last. Any orders placed this weekend will be shipped out on Tuesday (11/5) with tracking information.

Sigh…. another Pennsylvania brewery has announced that they will be closing soon. On the heels of Mellow Mink Announcing Their Upcoming Closure; Mad Princes Brewing has just announced via their social media pages that they too will be closing. Mad Princes Brewing is located in Doylestown, PA and currently has no firm date for their last day of operations. They have made recent posts about beers being put on tap. The brewery – which has no confirmed end date yet has stated they will maintain the hours they have listed on Facebook and Google, can be located at 2537 Bogarts Tavern Rd, Doylestown, PA 18902.

The Announcement

Mad Princes Brewing took to social media today to announce their upcoming closure. Their announcement reads:

Friends, it is with a sad & heavy heart that we must make an announcement that has recently become all too common in the craft brewing industry: After over 8 1/2 years, Mad Princes Brewing will be ceasing operations.

We have no firm final date as of yet, at least until the end of July, perhaps a week or two into August. It depends on how long the beer holds out and other factors. To paraphrase the great Stoic Philosopher, John “no IPAs” Rambo – “Mad Princes got themselves killed in COVID, and they didn’t even know it…”

We will miss being part of the Bucks County brewing community, participating in local Beer Festivals & events, being part of the Bucks County Ale Trail, but most of all, you, our customers. Without you, we would not have been able to share this hectic and rewarding journey together.

As a parting shot, we will be releasing later this month our final beer; the last sixtel of the 2022 “St. Lazarus Lemming” Rye Whiskey Barrel Aged Barleywine. It will be limited to two 6oz. pours per visit, no growlers (argh!). 13.8% ABV Oh, Stange glasses and Growler Drains are still available at 50% off. Seacrest out!

Humble Monk Brewery Forced to Relocate Amidst Unforeseen Challenges

Humble Monk Brewery, a well-known Cincinnati craft brewery in the Northside neighborhood, has announced an unexpected move due to “unforeseen circumstances.” According to a recent Facebook update from the brewery, the owners are actively searching for a new location but have not yet confirmed where the brewery will be relocating.

The brewery has been given a deadline of June 22 to vacate its current premises, adding urgency to the search for a new home. Despite the relocation challenges, fans of Humble Monk can still enjoy their favorite brews, as the brewery will continue selling its craft beer through packaged cans and kegs. In addition, merchandise remains available for purchase online.

Stay tuned for updates on the future home of Humble Monk Brewery and what’s next for this beloved Cincinnati taproom.

Anheuser-Busch InBev Closes Two Craft Brewpubs

The closures are unrelated and just happened to occur at similar time,

Anheuser-Busch InBev is in the process of closing two craft beer brewpubs. Both brewpubs have been affiliated with craft beer and were purchased by Anheuser-Busch InBev in the past decade.

Anheuser-Busch InBev is closing Golden Road Brewery out of Sacramento, California, and Wynwood Brewing Company in Miami, Florida. Golden Road Brewing closed its Sacramento, California, brewpub last week, and Wynwood Brewing Co. in Miami will close after a final day of operations on Feb. 4.

The difficult decision to close the Golden Road Sacramento Brewpub reflects the current operating realities facing the entire restaurant and hospitality industry, and we are committed to supporting our people through this transition, we are tremendously grateful to this community and their support over the years, and though the Sacramento Brewpub is closed, we look forward to continuing to bring them the beers they know and love at their favorite bars, restaurants, and bottle shops.

Various reports give different “reasons” cited for the closures, but with Anheuser-Busch InBev, generally speaking the biggest fundamental reason is — money. Costs versus profit, both brewpubs came up lacking, and with Anheuser-Busch InBev that means they were expenditures willing to be cut.

This blog post delves into the multifaceted troubles facing the craft beer sector and explores potential paths forward for these beloved breweries.

The Hurdles on the Horizon

Economic Pressures: The economic landscape for craft brewers has become increasingly perilous. By one report – in Pennsylvania – 26 breweries opened in 2023, where as 23 closed. Sign of the Horse Bierhaus is Closing

Sign of the Horse Bierhaus is closing, they announced today, stating that today would be their last day of operation – January 20th, 2024.

They took over the old Miscreation Brewing location in downtown Hanover, which we announced here: Sign of the Horse is Expanding – Taking over the old Miscreation Brewery – back in January of 2021.

Miscreation Brewing closed in January of 2021, with Sign of the Horse taking over and turning it into “Sign of the Horse – Bierhaus”.

Noon today, Sign of the Horse posted on their full Facebook page, as well as their individual pages, and their other social media platforms about their closing. You can read the announcement below:

It’s been fun while it lasted. We are announcing the closure of our Sign of the Horse Bierhaus location downtown. Today will be our last day of operation downtown. Unfortunately, we could not come to terms on our lease at that location. We have nothing but good things to say about our landlord, they have been great to work with and we would work with them again. In the end we just both had differing opinions on what the value of the lease should be and that is ok. They had offered to work with us for a little bit. We decided we would eventually be right back where we started and that would not be good for anyone. This way they can move on and we also can move on. This move will allow us to focus more time on our Sign of the Horse Restaurant and Brewery – Red Lion, Sign of the Horse Brewery – Hanover, and our Double Barrel locations along with some future plans that we have in the works. We have enjoyed serving our downtown patrons and hope they make the short trip up the road to our Sign of the Horse Brewery – Hanover location. Most of our current staff will be making the move to our Sign of the Horse Brewery – Hanover location so you can still come in and see your favorite Bartender. But for today, you can stop by and see them in their natural habitat and thank them for the time they have been there. Thanks again for 3 great years downtown and look forward to continuing serving Horse Nation at our York St. location.

North Country Brewing is Closing the Corn Crib at Freedom Farms Farmers Market

North Country Brewing’s time at Freedom Farms Farmers Market is seemingly coming to an end. At what they referred to as their “Corn Crib Taproom”, they have announced they will be closing it in the near future. Their last day of operations will be on February 29th, 2024. No word yet on what, if anything, will be going into the location, possibly another brewery will take over in the future, or possibly it will just become another vendor spot for the Freedom Farms Farmers Market.

Freedom Farms Farmers Market is located at 795 Pittsburgh Rd, Butler, PA 16002. North Country Brewing opened the Corn Crib Taproom in July of 2022. The Freedom Farms Farmers Market is a wonderful farmers market and vendor location, and has been a great second taproom for North Country Brewing. The greenhouse part is really pretty in the late spring / early summertime with the flowers and everything blooming. Freedom Farms Farmers Market is located in Butler County.

After careful consideration, we at North Country Brewing Co. have decided to shift our focus to our flagship locations and will be concluding our lease with Freedom Farms/Corn Crib. Our last day at The Corn Crib location will be on February 29th. We want to take this moment to reflect on the wonderful experiences and relationships we’ve built during our time here. The memories created will always hold a special place in our hearts.

Stickman Brews Announces Immediate Closure

Last night, on September 30th, Stickman Brews announced via their social media pages that they were closing immediately and permanently.

Their Instagram post reads:

Well guys, all things must come to an end. As of just now we are officially closed for good. We’d like to thank all our incredible customers for supporting us these last 8 years, and all the folks who have been part of our team for taking this wild ride with us. Owning and Operating Stickman has been a true pleasure, it’s just time for a new adventure. We’ll miss you guys!

Stickman Brews was located in Royersford, Pennsylvania.

Recent Scaling Back

Last night’s announcement comes two months after the brewery scaled back their business. Near the end of July – Stickman Brews went through a temporary shut down for roughly ten days. Prior to the shut down Stickman Brews featured a full kitchen and taproom. When re – opening they changed some things; the changes included removing their kitchen as well as reduced hours.

The brewery was eight years old at time of closure.

Arboretum Trail Brewing is Closing Their Taproom

If you are a member of the Fueled by Hops Facebook group – you might have just seen Ben Steffen (owner and head brewer of Arboretum Trail Brewing Company) announce the closing of the taproom located on Washington Boulevard in Pittsburgh, PA.

We announced back in June of 2022 that they were opening in the old Couch Brewery after their closure. (Arboretum Trail Brewing Is Opening Their Doors – The Beer Thrillers; June 16th, 2022.)

They had made a few recent Facebook posts commenting on how the location is not a great, or wonderful, or fabulous location. Even having a beer release with the beer titled “It’s a Tough Location”. As per Ben Steffen’s post – the Arboretum Trail Brewery will be closing their taproom on August 31st (8.31.23), but will continue production and distribution from a different location.

His full post reads:

I guess I’ll put this out there for the fam. Arbo is closing its doors on 8/31 at the taproom. Production and distro will still continue at another location so this isn’t goodbye, just see you soon. Stop in before the end of the month and drink some beer and hangout with me. Love you all and appreciate the continued feverish support. Going Another Direction

As Ben stated in his Facebook post, and from the NEXTPittsburgh article he linked in his post – Arboretum Trail Brewing Company will be going another direction – still producing, and distributing from a different location.

One of the newest Arboretum Trail Brewing beers, a hazy pale ale called It’s a Tough Location, is described as “paying homage to a line spoken over and over at Arbo.” Owner Ben Steffen puts it more bluntly: “The location should have scared me off.”

The brewery sits on an industrial stretch of Washington Boulevard (Route 8), off Negley Run Boulevard in Larimer. The speed limit is 35 mph but the cars are flying by at 50 mph or better. It’s a tricky left from the northbound lanes. There’s no foot traffic.

Couch Brewery operated out of the space for four years, until closing in late 2021. Arbo opened the following spring and Steffen isn’t sure how much longer he can hang in there.

The article continues to discuss Ben Steffen’s home brewing credentials. Touting his several medals won via home brewing competitions. The article also states that via Untappd and BeerAdvocate his beers have consistently been rated high. As well as their four pack sales have stayed strong.

Steffen notes that there has been trouble with the location, and that he finds it hard to book food trucks. Saying they would rather park at busier breweries than at Arboretum Trail.

There has also been a falling out with him and his partner concluding in Steffen taking over full ownership of Arboretum Trail Brewing Company.

There has also been issues with attendance for brew pub events and activities at the brewery on Washington Boulevard. (With a few notable exceptions – like the release of “Its a Tough Location”.)

Other Pittsburgh breweries have been very supportive, Steffen notes: Tortured Souls Brewing held its Mango Fett Blonde Ale can release at Arbo in July. And Steffen hopes to make it to autumn, when Arbo will feature his seasonal beers, including Pump(kin) It Up, an amber pumpkin ale, and The Hills Have Pumpkin, a stout made with pumpkin rolls from Pastries A-La-Carte. This year, for the first time, there will also be a barrel-aged version, coming in at 12% ABV. He also hopes to host UGG boots and scarves event in late September.

Whats to Come

As Ben Steffen posted – the taproom at 1351 Washington Blvd, Pittsburgh, PA 15206 – will be closing on August 31st, 2023. Also – like he said – the brewery will remain open with a production location that will be focusing on distribution.

No word yet on the location of their production facility.

There has been no official word of the taproom closing or the move to production and distribution on their social media outside of the Fueled by Hops Community group on Facebook.

When official word is announced we will update here, and keep everyone updated going forward on whatever information we get / have.

Anchor Brewing to Cease Operations, Liquidate Business

As we discussed yesterday – Anchor Brewing Could Be Sold Tomorrow – Anchor Brewing Company had their morning meeting today, and for one of the oldest craft breweries in America – the answers are in.

Sadly, this is the answer: “Anchor Brewing, the nation’s oldest craft brewery, will cease operations and the business will be liquidated, the company’s public relations firm announced today.”

Not the answer many (most, or all) were all looking for.

A month ago Anchor Brewing Company announced they were stopping national distribution and canceling their production of Christmas Ale.

The San Francisco craft brewery, which was acquired for $85 million by Sapporo in August 2017, cited “a combination of challenging economic factors and declining sales since 2016.” Ultimately, the company said the economic pressure “made the business no longer sustainable.”

Yesterday as we noted here on The Beer Thrillers, there was going to be a meeting and discussion of the future of Anchor Brewing Company this morning. VinePair’s reporter (David Infante) was under the impression that the brewery would be sold – with possible candidates being Russian River Brewing Company, Sierra Nevada Brewing, and Drake’s Brewing Company.

Unfortunately, it appears the route of ceasing operations was chosen.

Workers at Anchor were given 60 day’s notice today “with intent to provide transition support and separation packages in line with company practices and policies,” according to a press release.

Production has ceased at the brewery, but packaging and distribution of remaining beer on hand will continue through the end of July. Anchor’s Public Taps taproom will temporarily remain open to sell through remaining inventory, including a small batch of 2023 Anchor Christmas Ale that was brewed prior to the decision to cancel the ale’s national release.

In the press release junket, Anchor Brewing spokesperson Sam Singer stated that several proposed and attempted sales and buy – outs fell through over the last year. Saying: “Repeated efforts” for the attempt at sales.

Sam Singer was previously quoted to say:

The inflationary impact of product costs in San Francisco is one factor, couple that with a highly competitive craft beer market and a historically costly steam brewing technique. [They’ve] probably been mulling over this decision for a year. It’s not something they take lightly.

In the press release junket, Sam Singer reiterated the above, and also stated:

This was an extremely difficult decision that Anchor reached only after many months of careful evaluation. We recognize the importance and historic significance of Anchor to San Francisco and to the craft brewing industry, but the impacts of the pandemic, inflation, especially in San Francisco, and a highly competitive market left the company with no option but to make this sad decision to cease operations.

A Buyer

A buyer could still emerge to buy the brewery while in the liquidation phase. Though, the company is entering a process in which an assignee will liquidate the business’ assets to pay off creditors as part of a California Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors, which is an alternative to filing Chapter 7 or 11 bankruptcy.

Possible buyers could still emerge, but the odds seem dwindling, especially giving the liquidation process.

The Wednesday press release stated that the company plans to provide transition support and separation packages to outgoing employees, and that the Anchor Public Taps taproom on De Haro Street will remain open temporarily to sell remaining inventory. Brewing has ceased, but the brewery says it will continue to package and distribute beer on hand through the end of July.

Anchor Brewing also said Wednesday that attempts over the past year to find a buyer were unsuccessful, but one could emerge during the liquidation process.

Sapporo USA

Anchor Brewing Company whilst owned by Sapporo USA has definitely been changed, there is no doubt about that. Many employees have attested to that online and in various website forums, social media pages, and blogs and podcasts.

Last month they announced they were pulling back on national distribution and stopping production of beloved and cherished Christmas Ale.

Production under Sapporo’s leadership declined in every other year with the exception of 2021, when volume increased +45%, to 72,500 barrels, its highest point since the 89,612 barrels produced in 2018, according to the Brewers Association’s New Brewer Magazine.

In 2022, Anchor’s volume declined -10% in 2022, to 65,000 barrels..

Brewbound previously reported that Anchor employees were uncertain about their fate since parent company Sapporo reached a deal to acquire Stone Brewing in June 2022, citing a “lack of transparency” in Sapporo’s plans with Stone and how it affects Anchor.”

Union negotiations were delayed at Anchor earlier this year, although a second contract has been ratified.

A brief history on Anchor Brewing Company:

Anchor began during the California Gold Rush when Gottlieb Brekle arrived from Germany and began brewing in San Francisco. In 1896, Ernst F. Baruth and his son-in-law, Otto Schinkel, Jr., bought an old brewery at 1431 Pacific Avenue and named it Anchor Brewery. The brewery burned down in the fires that followed the 1906 earthquake, but was rebuilt at a different location in 1907.^[7] There is no record of what Anchor did during Prohibition, but it resumed serving Steam Beer after Repeal, possibly as the only steam brewing company still in operation.^[8] However the brewery burned down yet again within the year, and it relocated once more, this time to a building a few blocks away.

The brewery continued operations into the late 1950s, but suffered heavily from the country’s increasingly strong preference for the light lagers produced by the megabreweries.^[9] Whereas there had been more than 4,000 breweries at the turn of the twentieth century, only 70 remained by the 1960s.^[10]

Anchor shut its doors briefly in 1959, but was bought and reopened the following year.^[11] By 1965, however, it was doing so poorly that it nearly closed again. Anchor’s situation continued to deteriorate largely because the current owners lacked the expertise, equipment, and attention to cleanliness that were required to produce consistent batches of beer for commercial consumption. The brewery gained a reputation for producing sour, bad beer.^[12]

In 1965, Frederick Louis “Fritz” Maytag III bought the brewery, saving it from closure.^[13] He purchased 51 percent of the brewery for several thousand dollars, and later purchased the brewery outright.^[14] It moved to its current location near Potrero Hill in 1979.

In 1993, the company opened Anchor Distillery, a microdistillery in the same location as the brewery, and began making a single malt rye whiskey, named Old Potrero after the hill. In 1997, the microdistillery began producing gin, called Junípero—Spanish for juniper, and a reference to Fr. Junípero Serra, an important figure in San Francisco’s and California’s history. Recently they have also begun producing a Jenever style gin called Genevieve, using wheat, barley, rye, and the same herbal ingredients as their Junípero gin.

In 2010, Maytag sold the company to former Skyy vodka executives Keith Greggor and Tony Foglio, from Novato, California, who planned to expand Anchor’s business while keeping its commitment to artisan brewing.^[10] In 2013, the brewery launched Anchor California Lager, a re-creation of a historic Boca Brewing lager from the 1870s.^[25] The brewery also announced a major expansion plan at Pier 48 in the Mission Rock neighborhood near Oracle Park,^[26] which would expand Anchor’s maximum annual production capacity from 180,000 barrels to 680,000 barrels.^[26]

In 2014, Anchor officially announced Anchor IPA,^[27] the first India Pale Ale in the brewery’s history.^[1] Anchor ended production of its winter seasonal Bock in 2014^[28] and replaced it a year later with Anchor Winter Wheat.^[29]

In 2017, Anchor was purchased by Sapporo.^[30]

In 2019, Anchor Brewing workers voted by an almost 2-to-1 margin to join the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, making Anchor Brewing – including Anchor Public Taps, the brewery’s on-site brew pub – the first unionized craft brewery in the United States.^[31]

In 2021, Anchor Brewing announced a major makeover of their logo and beer labels. On the eve of their 125th birthday, the brewery replaced their vintage-looking labels with a large Anchor logo in a two-tone color schemes per beer. Most labels were not changed in decades or at all. The beer itself remained unchanged.
