It’s Pumpkin Time!

So…. a couple leaves have changed color on the tree in our front yard.  So…. it’s technically not too early, right?  I can talk about pumpkin spice now?  They were the first ones I saw in the store and I had to grab a couple for me and Grandma SueAnn to enjoy.   (See: A Beer Review by Grandma SueAnn [Beer Review: Braaaiins! by Spring House Brewing Company].)

We were shopping at the local Weiss and I saw it on an end-cap and I had to have it.  Braaaiins by Spring House Brewing Company.  I grabbed the 4pack with the approving nod from the boyfriend.  I could hardly wait long enough for them to chill.  Grandma SueAnn was in agreement; kicking our pumpkin beer drinking season off with a loved classic was the way to go. The first pumpkin beer of the year, near end of August, and I had to grab it!

Braaaiins! by Spring House Brewing

Once chilled this pumpkin ale is the perfect beer to kick off Autumn with.  It is described on Untapped as “our pumpkin ale is brewed with generous amounts of real pumpkin blended into the mash.  The subtle fresh pumpkin flavor is enhanced by the addition of a touch of traditional autumn spices and sweet dough, thus creating a beer with an orange amber color, warm pumpkin aroma, a bold malt center and a crisp finish.  We are proud to offer you a balanced and delectable fall treat.  Suitable for zombies.”  It has an 8.5% ABV so I isn’t anything to mess around with.  It has an overall rating on Untapped of 3.70.

Zombies are People Too by New Trail Brewing

On another occasion we swung into West Connection Beer Vault in Hummelstown (find West Connection Beer Vault on Facebook).  Amongst the mix of six we picked out were two from New Trail Brewing. (We also scored a fantastic Barleywine by 3 Floyds Brewing – Pillar of Beasts. See Ben’s beer review of that here: Beer Review: Pillar of Beasts by 3 Floyds Brewing.)

Zombies Are People Too and Double Zombies, two pumpkin beers from the mid – Central PA brewery up in Williamsport. They clock in at a 5.7%ABV and an 8.5% ABV respectively. My first instinct was to see if Grandma SueAnn could tell the difference between the two New Trail pumpkin beers. (Because who better to try out new pumpkin beers with than Grandma SueAnn?) Yes, the Double Zombies has a higher ABV but Double Zombies is also supposed to be packed with, according to Untapped “twice the strength, maple syrup, vanilla, and pumpkin spice.”  Grandma SueAnn thought she tasted just a bit more spice to Double Zombies but she happily helped me drink both pumpkin beers.

Overall though we enjoyed both of the New Trail pumpkin options. In the mid-state (Harrisburg area) you can find them at your different beer distributors and bottle shops like Breski’s Beverages, West Connection Beer Vault, Brass Rail, Bradford Village Beer and Soda, as well as at your grocery stores like Wegmans, Weiss, and Giant. You might even be able to find them in some gas stations like Rutters, WaWa, or Sheetz. So be on the lookout and the hunt!

Pumpkin Patch Noir – a Chocolate Pumpkin Stout

Pumpkin Patch Noir

The Recipe

We were in State College for the Walk to End ALZ. We were there Friday November 3rd, and Saturday November 4th. Amy works for the Alzheimer’s Association and was in charge of the State College Walk to End ALZ. I haven’t been up to State College since I was about 9 or 10 years old or so, and got to see a Penn State game at Beaver Stadium. I have had some of Otto’s Brewery beers before – my friend Ming brought home a mix six pack for me once. Amy was too tired last night to do her normal Sunday weekly column, so she took the time to do it tonight (Monday). She also did a mid week column – Halloween Candy and Beer Pairings; so please be sure to check that out. Amy is still recouping from the busy weekend and I believe is already sound asleep to the Simpson’s. This is her brewery review. (-Ben)

Brewery Review: Otto’s Pub and Brewery

We received the most recommendations for Otto’s Pub and Brewery when we polled our friends on which brewery we should check out while working in State College.  This was our first time at Otto’s but we previously had some of there beers.

We knew there would be a wait to get into this place on a Friday night.  We lapped the parking lot to find a distillery right in front of Otto’s.  After later seeing they are both owned by C&D Brewing ventures we will definitely check them out on the next trip into SC. 

We were told a 30-minute wait and by the looks of Barrel 21 Distillery in front of Otto’s that seemed pretty generous.  Besides I saw plenty of things in the general store I wanted to take an extra peak at.

There was lots of cool merchandise in the store.  But right away the line of Otto’s craft soda caught my attention. 

I was immediately drooling over the stacks of grape soda, birch beer, raspberry cream soda, orange soda, root beer and ginger beer. While I was pregnant and later breast feeding Scarlet being able to find craft sodas or just anything nonalcoholic at a brewery felt like such a treat. (See my Weekly Column: I Really Miss Drinking.)

I immediately squealed with delight at the sight of the ginger beer.  I struggled so hard with nausea my ENTIRE pregnancy and ginger seemed to really help that symptom subside.  There was definitely going to be a 6 pack coming home with me. 

The nostalgia of the soda and the décor of Otto’s was hitting hard as we were waiting for our table.  We got chatting and almost missed our table. 

We were seated and waited on quickly considering how busy the place was.  We ordered a “Try 3” and a 20 oz pour.  In the try 3 mix we picked Oktoberfest, Small batch series Porter and Small Batch Series Ale: Pumpkin Ale.  For the 20 oz we tried the Slab cabin IPA.  The Porter was loved by Ben and the Pumpkin Ale was loved by Amy.  If you know our tastes, this was predictable.

I saw house made beer pretzel on the appetizer menu and I couldn’t pass it by.  I could be talked into many things with the offering of a beer pretzel, especially one served with sweet and spicy mustard.  Both the beer and the pretzel arrived in a short amount of time.  The pretzel tasted buttery and rich but not greasy.  It paired perfectly with the beers!

I had my eye on the BBQ chicken pizza special.  We went with no banana hot peppers to cut down on spiciness.  But it definitely still had a kick to it.  I am guessing the Southwest Ranch.  But it wasn’t anything a swig of the yummy brews couldn’t fix.

We’ll definitely be back to Otto’s and you should check it out too.

Walk to End ALZ

Editor Ben jumping back in here. I just want to say how amazing of a job Amy did for the State College Walk to End ALZ. As well as all of the volunteers she had working for her, but I just want to mention how amazing of a job Amy did. We got up to State College around 1 PM and worked until nearly 6 PM getting Medlar Field and the Beaver Stadium / State College Campus area ready for the walk. It was hard work, but Amy is very dedicated, hard working, and a wonderful advocate for the cause. She did an absolutely phenomenal job – as she always does – for the walk. We got to meet a lot of great people, got to hear wonderful touching stories from people over the weekend, and hopefully helped raise awareness, raise funds, and help lift and bolster spirits for people dealing with this horrific disease. Amy is a truly kick ass hard working warrior for the cause.

Within five minutes of arriving at Grandma SueAnn’s house; she smiled and asked if I was ready for pumpkin beer?!

Does a bear sh1t in the woods?  Hell, yes, I want a pumpkin beer!  I almost launched the food and small baby spoon I was using to feed Scarlet with at my Mom’s head.  Instead, I just smiled at her like the wild-eyed maniac that motherhood has turned me into.  She was talking about diving back into the pumpkin beer haul from last Sunday.

(Last week Amy got to spend time with her mom – Grandma SueAnn – and they dived into the first part of their pumpkin beer haul: Pumpkin Beer Review with Grandma SueAnn – Abomination Brewing: Forbidden Pumpkin, Greater Good Brewing: Giant Pumpkin, and Pizza Boy Brewing: Sunny Side Up Double Coffee Pumpkin.)

Diving Back Into the Pumpkin Haul

I let Grandma SueAnn pick the glassware, so go ahead and peep on the cute bear glass.  If you think that is silly just wait until we get to beer #2.  Her pick was the Nightmare on East Elm Street, a pumpkin/yam beer, by Conshohoken Brewing Company.  This is a 6.66% ABV…wait a sec, was that done on purpose?  I see what you did there. 

NEES has an overall untapped rating of 3.64. It is described as “A seasonal homage to our original brewery in Conshohocken, we bring you Nightmare on East Elm Street Pumpkin Ale.  Brewed with honey malt, pumpkin puree, lactose and spices.  Nightmare on East Elm Street is pumpkin pie in a glass.  This autumn ale is best paired with candy corn.”  We both thought that the pumpkin flavor was pretty light and finished as a pilsner.  A few on Untapped agree.  Maybe one of the other flavors mellowed out the pumpkin flavor?  It was a great light beer and went down very smoothly. 

Something Something Pumpkin

Without hesitation Grandmas SueAnn is popping up to pick out the second beer.  Again, I let her pick.  It’s fun to watch her read about the beers and get to know which ones she likes and which ones she doesn’t.  I love that I get to split beers with my mom, watch my daughter play and watch football at the same time. 

That first beer was only a 6.66% ABV but Grandma SueAnn is posing the bears with the beer.  I told you to watch out for the pic of beer #2.  Aren’t they cute? She picked the Something pumpkin by Eight and Sand.  This is a pumpkin/yam beer coming in at 6%.  It is described as “Our pumpkin cream ale treats your taste buds to notes of pumpkin pie crust, warm cinnamon, smooth vanilla, and autumn spices.”  SP has an overall rating on 3.90 on Untapped.

We both agreed Something Pumpkin is nice and light but filled with flavor at the same time.  It has a sweet flavor but not the overly sweet some cream ales can have.  Maybe it should have been classified as a cream ale and not a pumpkin/yam beer.

Some of us pumpkin lovers don’t settle for subtle fall flavors.

Only the best pumpkin, only the most truest of pumpkin flavors for us.

I know you will never believe this, but Grandma SueAnn turned me down to split the 3^rd and final beer of the pumpkin beer stash.  She seemed sleepy as Scarlet was keeping her on her toes.  Don’t worry, we will add more seasonal beers to the stash. 

I’m sure this also won’t be the last time you’ll be seeing Grandma SueAnn reviewing some beers with us here on The Beer Thrillers; so please let us (and by extension her) know if you are enjoying her beer reviews. My offering of an afternoon of pumpkin beer was met with a quick yes when I texted Grandma SueAnn last night.  I mean, we knew I wasn’t twisting her arm. 

(We had a busy morning – went to Bill’s for breakfast, then we ran out to Memorial Lake and Levitz Park to look around, and found ourselves stopping at Bradford Village Beer and Soda – originally looking for Ever Grain Brewing Company’s Sorbetto #66, but not finding it – Ben made this mix – a – six of pumpkin beers for Amy and SueAnn.)

Sunny Side Up Double Coffee Pumpkin by Pizza Boy

After going on a beer run we started the afternoon off with Pizza Boy’s Sunny Side UP Pumpkin double coffee stout.  The Pumpkin SSU comes in at 11.9% ABV and it is described on Untapped as an Imperial double stout.  It has an overall untapped rating of 3.97.  Ah Yes, the double coffee stout we know and love.  The coffee might be overpowering the pumpkin.  Even rocking at a 11.9 this stout didn’t taste boozy.  It kept us warm on a chilly and windy Sunday in October.  This one didn’t take long for Grandma SueAnn and I to share out of the vintage smurf glass.  This also reminds me, we need another pizza boy trip. 

I had to run out for a quick errand.  Grandma SueAnn couldn’t wait and was already knuckle deep in the Giant Pumpkin from Greater Good. She finally got her granddaughter to take a nap and was celebrating apparently.  This would explain the not quite full beer pic.

Giant Pumpkin by Greater Good Brewing

The Giant Pumpkin is described as a pumpkin/yam beer and comes in at a 8% ABV.  It is described on Untapped as “Sweet notes of creamy pumpkin pie, supplemented by hints of sugar and spice, across a clean and crisp 8% ale.’  The hints of sugar and spice definitely contained some cinnamon, that was the leading flavor we both had.   It has an overall Untapped rating of 3.84.

The third beer for the afternoon was the Forbidden pumpkin by Abomination Brewing Company, an imperial Milkshake style india pale ale.  This Imperial comes in with a 9.3% ABV and has an overall 4.06 rating on Untapped.  “Forbidden pumpkins is an Imperial Pumpkin milkshake IPA that clocks in at 9.3% brewed with malted oats and flaked wheat, double dry hopped with Citra and Mosaic then fermented atop a monstrous amount of pumpkins, vanilla beans, pumpkin spice and milk sugar.  This hazy IPA pairs perfectly with hoodies, fall hikes and nights out by the fire pit with friends!” 

This was the Grandma SueAnn Favorite of the day.  We both agreed this brew was light and creamy.  The fall flavors were not overpowering and this was sweet but just enough to entice you for another sip. 

And That Was the Day

Splitting 3 beers and the afternoon was gone.  Grandma SueAnn reminded me since we split them, it’s only 1.5 and that isn’t much.  Although I couldn’t get Grandma SueAnn to promise if she’d wait to crack open the last 3 when I was back.  I gave it a couple minutes thought contemplating if the beers were safe in her fridge.  I figure we have about a 50/50 shot.

This was a wonderful fall afternoon spent drinking beers with my mom, while Scarlet terrorized her living room and we watched some football!

After already dipping my tongue in Master of Pumpkins by Troeg’s I felt the urge to grab just a few more seasonal beers. Especially to split a few with my Mom (Grandma SueAnn). 

I couldn’t resist grabbing Braaaiins! Pumpkin Ale for Zombies by Springhouse.  This tasty seasonal treat comes in at 8.5% ABV and an overall untapped rating of 3.70. 

It is described on untapped as “Our pumpkin ale is brewed with generous amounts of real pumpkin blended into the mash.  The subtle fresh pumpkin flavor is enhanced by the addition of a touch of traditional autumn spices and sweet dough, thus creating a beer with an orange amber color, warm pumpkin aroma, a bold malt center and a crisp finish.  We are proud to offer you a balanced and delectable fall treat.  Suitable for zombies.”

Grandma Sueann loves that fact that I write for a beer blog.  This means beer needs to be tasted and consumed, and she is all in with that idea! It felt like it was time for a few of the pumpkin or marzen beers.  After Scarlet drifted off for her afternoon nap I quickly showed off the pumpkin surprise to Grandma Sueann.

In between splitting this beer my laundry needed tossed over to the dryer.  Because my washing machine is dead and there is always something to fix, vent over. Somehow a good bit of the “split” was consumed before I made it back from the laundry switching. 

Grandma SueAnn quickly tells me her thoughts on the beer.  Apparently, I was getting a review whether I liked it or not.  She described Braaaiins! as more caramelly and sweet than she was expecting.  Not as much pumpkin flavor either.  She still finished this beer out and would absolutely enjoy it again!

I’d definitely agree with that description, Braaaiins! is definitely a lighter pumpkin beer.  Grandma SueAnn wanted to know the ABV.  When I replied with 8.5% she grinned and said “nice!”

(Ben interjection moment here: Braaaiins! by Spring House Brewing Company was one of the earliest “different” craft beers I recall really having back in 2010. Would always grab a bomber bottle of it for Thanksgiving to have with our dinners while the older generations had their wine, I would have this. It was always one of my favorite pumpkin beers to look forward to each fall, and was always a highlight of the Pumpkin Wars event at Funck’s in Palmyra.)

Add it to Your List

Definitely put this pumpkin beer on your list! If you are making a “pumpkin beers” list to try, this one should be high up on that list. As far as fall beers go, make sure you add some of the great local Oktoberfest beers as well – Pigtoberfest by Boneshire Brew Works, Oh My Gourd by Ever Grain Brewing, Oktoberfest by Troegs Independent Brewing, and many more local greats.

(Amy was spoiled this weekend. She got to visit YAH Brew and Tattered Flag Brewery after Ben got off work on Friday; then on Saturday after he got off work she got to go to Boneshire Brew Works for the end of their Pigtoberfest, and then today she got to meet up with a friend at Ever Grain Brewing Company. Not a bad weekend at all for Amy. If you follow our Instagram – you would get to see some of our pics from these fantastic breweries.)

I don’t consider myself a basic “girl” but let me tell you I do look forward to a pumpkin beer when fall is here! 

We are starting this night off with Master of Pumpkins by Troegs and a bacon cheeseburger.  I had to make sure it was clear I wasn’t eating anything for my main meal that had pumpkin in it.  You see I have loved the pumpkin and fall flavors for many, many years. 

Even this beer has been around for 20 years. (According to the Troegs Blog – Master of Pumpkins – brewed with real PA longnecks – October 2nd, 2022). (Master of Pumpkins.) But is it really a surprise that the following year is when Starbucks debuted the Pumpkin Spice latter in a select number of locations? (On their 20 Years Of Starbucks PSL: How The Humble Drink Became An Autumnal Icon) (Editor Note: Fun Ben note here, we discussed this just the other day, trying to figure out how old Master of Pumpkins was, and couldn’t find it in the “big book of beers” at work, we were guessing roughly 10 years, good to see we have a definitive answer here now.)

Troegs Master of Pumpkins (MoP or Mopkins) comes in at a 7.% ABV.  It has an overall Untapped rating of 3.74 and is described as “Brewed with native Pennsylvania neck pumpkins harvested just a few miles from our brewery.  Master of Pumpkins conjures the spirit of autumn by combining traditional pie spices with French saison yeast to elicit notes of vanilla, clove, nutmeg and honey.”  And let me tell you this combination was just as delicious 20 years ago

MoP takes you on a subtle but telling journey through the freshness of the long neck pumpkins grown locally, the softness of the vanilla but the pie spices come through and remind you fall is here.  One Untapped rating described this as “Still a damn good beer every year.” Yes indeed it is!

Cookies from Troegs Brewing as part of the Oktoberfest event. (Oktoberfest Gingerbread Cookie Hearts). The cupcakes come from Darby and are Pumpkin cupcakes with Nutella frosting.

My delight of the evening, lovingly provided by my boyfriend, was my delicious gingerbread cookie and my pumpkin spice Nutella icing cupcakes.  The Gingerbread cookies, decorated especially for a brewery, are soft and pair nicely with the MOP.  I thought it might be too many spice combinations but they each complimented one another.  Then my spoiled butt got to finish off the evening with a pumpkin spice cupcake with Nutella icing.  That homemade Nutella icing is whipped and fluffy.  It perfectly compliments the dense but moist pumpkin spice cupcake.  Taking that last swig of MoP was the perfect finisher to it all.  Maybe that 4 pack won’t last long.

Editor Post-Script

Quick jump on here, editor Ben adding a post-script while Amy goes to sleep and I finish up her article. It has been a very busy weekend for us (despite the horrible weather). Amy had her first walk of the year – “Walk to End ALZ” in Lancaster yesterday, and was up at 5 AM to go and get everything ready for it. She absolutely nailed another great walk, and helped the cause, helping to try and find a cure to end Alzheimer’s. She is a tremendously hard worker, a hard trooper, and works her butt off for the Alzheimer’s Association.

I didn’t sleep well Friday into Saturday. I fell asleep sometime around 3 AM and woke up with Scarlet at 4:45 AM. Amy then left for her walk, and I watched Scarlet until my parents had her for the day so I could go to work. Work was super busy, crazy hectic, but a fun quick day despite the horrible weather. Got to meet Mark of Beards, Brews, and BBQs. Pretty cool dude and got to talk with him a bit and hang with him before his turn at the stein holding competition.

They announced the GABF winners yesterday. You can find some of the winner posts here (Pennsylvania, Maryland, D.C.). I got those completed before I started falling asleep at the computer.

Note on the cupcakes – so Darby makes these wonderful cupcakes, cookies, etc and brings them in for all of us at work to enjoy. I have jokingly started telling co-workers that I made them and they could help themselves to them. So thus, she has now started putting her name on them and spreading her “lies” that she makes them and not me.

Today – Sunday – was certainly no less busy than yesterday was. We woke up early with Scarlet, went out to eat at our favorite local breakfast spot – Bill’s Restaurant – and then we went to the Hershey Blue Barn and donated blood. (See our Instagram for pictures.)

After this, we went to Amy’s work, and in the rain unloaded the U-Haul full of stuff from yesterday’s walk event. And then before I knew it, it was time for work. At the end of work I scooped up another one of Darby’s cupcakes, grabbed another gingerbread cookie for Amy, and grabbed her a 4 pack of the Master of Pumpkins for tonight. Amy made excellent bacon cheeseburgers for us for dinner, wrote this great article, and then promptly passed out. So she’ll get to see this article in the morning.

Sadly, another brewery is shuttering its doors for the last time. 2020 (and now 2021) has not been kind to a lot of breweries. From normal strain of business, to the economics of a pandemic, to shut downs and lock downs, to the craft brewery market blowing up and there being a new brewery nearly every other block, there has sadly been a lot of brewery closings in the past 365 days.

A few other breweries have shuttered their doors this year citing “coronavirus / COVID-19” and lock-down and shut down issues as the impetus for their closings. Spigot Brewing and River Bend Hop Farm and Brewing both closed in 2020 stating COVID-19 reasons. And this is just Pennsylvania. There has been many others across the country )and the world) that have closed citing similar reasons. (Mikkeller in NYC closed this year – permanently as well.)

On December 28, 2020, just before New Years, during the second shut down in Pennsylvania for breweries and entertainment establishments (casinos, restaurants, gyms, etc.) they posted the above message. Saying that effective Thursday December 31st they would be closing until further notice.

Earlier today (January 10th, 2021) Miscreation Brewing Company LLC posted the above message on their Facebook page.

It reads:

It is with great sadness that after almost 6 years, Miscreation Brewing Company will be closing its doors. Due to the financial burdens that COVID-19 has inflicted into our business, we must make this very difficult decision. We understand although this will impact many of our faithful followers/patrons, we take solace in knowing we have fostered many friendships over the past 5-1/2 years that will last a lifetime. We played a part in other introductions and in some cases even a place for first meetings that have ended in marriage!We can’t express enough gratitude to our many employees/team members over the years for their dedication, contributions to the vision and ultimately the customer experience.Additionally, we are pleased that we were able to contribute to the revitalization of downtown Hanover and partner with Main Street to bring a vibrant experience to so many.We would like to wish continued success to our fellow breweries in the area: Something Wicked Brewing (Great collaborators and friends of ours from inception), Aldus Brewing Co., Center Square Brewing, Sign of the Horse, Warehouse Gourmet and of course The Circle!We would like to offer all Mug Club members an opportunity to come by and pick up their mugs and enjoy a beer on us until we kick the final keg that is tapped. This will be available during the following hours:

Friday January 15th from 5:00-8:00 pm

Saturday January 16th from 12:00-3:00 pm

Miscreation Brewing on Untappd

Miscreation Brewing Company has an Untappd page (as does every brewery), which listed them as a brew pub in Hanover Pennsylvania, with 118 unique beers. Founded in 2016. As of January 10th, 2021, they had 20,700+ ratings and a global average rating of 3.69.

A loss to Hanover Pennsylvania

This is certainly a loss to Hanover Pennsylvania and the craft brewing industry and local area. They have had a great following in the town of Hanover and a strong presence in the community since 2015.

Last year on a trip with a friend into York and Hanover we got to stop there, and enjoy some beer at their location, before taking a four pack to Codorus State Park.

We here at The Beer Thrillers wish them good luck in their future endeavors. We also hope something good comes to the business front, perhaps another brewery, or fine restaurant, as the location is a wonderful spot and could serve a new brewery or restaurant perfectly.

This is indeed tough times for many small businesses, breweries, restaurants, and people in general. We all need to support each other and these businesses and breweries we want to survive the upcoming year. We are seeing the end of the tunnel and the light is on; vaccines are being sent across the country, relief looks to becoming for some small businesses and restaurants, and hopefully more in the future.

So I urge everyone who can, go out and support your local businesses and breweries. Buy to go food or a four pack at your favorite small craft brewery, take it home, talk them up with your friends, give them good reviews on social media, share their posts, help get their names out there.
