Most Popular Breweries by State as per Perplexity

Taking a look at the most popular brewery in each state can be a bit difficult. But thankfully with AI, we can quick pin down things a bit more succinctly. So I fired up the old Perplexity AI machine, and threw it the commands of “what is the most popular brewery in each state” and then gave it the caveats of using Untappd data, sales data, online mentions, and variables such as website recommendations and such.

And here’s what it gave us:

The Alchemist

The following comes via Untappd.

The Alchemist is a regional brewery from Stowe, VT. They have 75 unique beers and over 770,000 ratings, with a global average rating of 4.33 (as of 7.18.24). Their Untappd description reads: “John and Jen Kimmich originally opened The Alchemist as a 60 seat brew pub in the village of Waterbury in 2003. After eight years of success and growing popularity, they decided to open a small production brewery in Waterbury in 2011. Not long after, Tropical Storm Irene flooded much of the state, causing widespread damage in downtown Waterbury, including the Pub. Forced to shut the Pub doors, the Kimmichs focused their efforts on the new Cannery and distributing Heady Topper locally. Pop-up truck sales, long lines in Waterbury, and a booming craft beer scene led up to the opening of the 2016 Stowe Brewery and Visitor’s Center. Today, The Alchemist operates two breweries in Waterbury and Stowe and distributes Heady Topper and Focal Banger throughout the state, with the occasional out-of-state shipment. Limited specialty beers are released at the Stowe Brewery only, where curbside beer sales have been our only public contact since March 2020.

Book Review: The Alchemist (Paulo Coelho) https://thebeerthrillers.com/2024/04/23/book-review-the-alchemist-paulo-coelho/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=book-review-the-alchemist-paulo-coelho Tue, 23 Apr 2024 13:18:03 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=15175

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

Paulo Coelho

Paulo Coelho, born on August 24, 1947, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is a renowned author whose works have captivated millions of readers around the world. Before becoming an internationally recognized writer, Coelho had a diverse and unconventional career path. He pursued interests in theater, journalism, and even songwriting, where he collaborated with popular Brazilian musicians like Raul Seixas. However, his journey towards literary success was not straightforward. Coelho experienced a spiritual awakening during a pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago in Spain, which deeply influenced his writing and led to the creation of his seminal work, “The Alchemist.”

“The Alchemist,” first published in 1988, is Coelho’s most famous novel and has been translated into over 80 languages, making it one of the most translated books in the world. Despite its initial lackluster reception, the book eventually gained massive popularity and established Coelho as a significant voice in contemporary literature. His narrative style, characterized by simplicity and spiritual themes, resonates with readers seeking meaning and inspiration in their lives. Beyond “The Alchemist,” Coelho has written numerous other novels, including “Brida,” “Veronika Decides to Die,” and “The Zahir,” each exploring different facets of the human experience and spiritual journey.

Coelho’s influence extends beyond the literary world; he is also known for his active presence on social media, where he engages with his vast global audience. His personal story of overcoming adversity, including periods of institutionalization during his youth for his rebellious nature, adds to the inspirational aura that surrounds him. Despite criticisms of his work as being overly simplistic or commercial, Coelho’s impact on readers and his ability to address universal themes of personal legend, destiny, and the pursuit of dreams have cemented his status as a significant cultural figure. His life and work continue to inspire millions, making him a unique and enduring presence in the literary landscape.

Paulo Coelho’s Writing

In my view, Paulo Coelho’s writing suffers from a simplistic style and an over – reliance on platitudes that lack depth and originality. While his prose is undeniably accessible, it often falls short of the literary finesse and complexity that I believe are essential for great writing. Coelho’s narratives are frequently filled with trite aphorisms and banal observations that are presented as profound wisdom. For me, his characters often feel like mere vessels for these aphorisms, lacking the necessary depth and development to truly engage on a meaningful level. This superficiality makes his stories resemble self-help manuals more than novels, which diminishes their literary value in my eyes.

Furthermore, I find Coelho’s themes, although universally appealing, to be overly simplistic and reductive. His deterministic notions, such as the idea that the universe conspires to help individuals achieve their desires, come across as a form of magical thinking that ignores the real complexities and hardships of life. While this kind of storytelling can be comforting, it often feels detached from the nuanced and realistic explorations of human experience that I look for in literature. Coelho’s tendency to wrap his narratives in mysticism and spirituality without substantive exploration further diminishes his standing as a serious literary figure in my perspective. Although his books have found a large audience, the lack of intellectual rigor and literary depth in his work leaves him, in my opinion, outside the ranks of truly great writers.

Book Review: The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

GoodReads Blurb:

Paulo Coelho’s masterpiece tells the mystical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure. His quest will lead him to riches far different, and far more satisfying, listening to our hearts, of recognizing opportunity and learning to read the omens strewn along life’s path, and, most importantly, to follow our dreams.

GoodReads – The Alchemist

If you’re looking for a book that promises profound life lessons but delivers nothing more than a series of tired clichés, then look no further than Paulo Coelho’s “The Alchemist.” This so-called modern classic has been praised for its wisdom and spiritual insight, but any discerning reader will quickly see through the thin veneer of profundity to the hollow core beneath.

At its heart, “The Alchemist” is a simple tale of a shepherd named Santiago who dreams of finding a treasure in the Egyptian pyramids. Along the way, he’s bombarded with mystical mumbo jumbo about Personal Legends, the Soul of the World, and other vague, esoteric concepts that seem profound until you realize they’re just filler for an otherwise banal story.

The Alchemist: A Masterpiece of Mediocrity

Coelho’s writing style, lauded by many as poetic and inspiring, often feels more like a string of fortune cookie aphorisms. “When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it,” he writes. But what does that really mean? In the real world, dreams require hard work, persistence, and often a healthy dose of luck. Suggesting that the universe is somehow invested in our personal desires is not just naïve; it’s misleading.

The characters in “The Alchemist” are less people and more cardboard cutouts designed to spout Coelho’s pseudo-philosophical nonsense. Santiago himself is the quintessential everyman, a blank slate onto which readers are supposed to project themselves. The wise alchemist, the crystal merchant, and even the Englishman—all are vehicles for the book’s simplistic messages rather than fully fleshed-out individuals.

Perhaps the most frustrating aspect of “The Alchemist” is its relentless positivity. While there’s nothing wrong with optimism, Coelho’s insistence that everything happens for a reason and that we all have a predestined path comes off as shallow and detached from reality. Life is messy, unpredictable, and often unfair—an idea Coelho seems determined to gloss over in favor of his feel-good narrative.

Contextually, “The Alchemist” came out during a time when self-help and spiritual enlightenment books were gaining immense popularity. The late 20th century saw a surge in works that promised quick fixes to life’s deeper problems, and Coelho’s book fit perfectly into this trend. It’s no surprise that it found a ready audience among those disillusioned by the complexities of modern life, offering them a simplistic escape wrapped in faux wisdom.

Moreover, “The Alchemist” has been marketed as a life-changing book, a label that has undoubtedly contributed to its success. Many readers, caught up in the hype, are quick to proclaim its greatness without critically examining its content. The book’s success can also be attributed to its universal themes, which, while ostensibly deep, are so generalized that they can apply to anyone, anywhere, thus broadening its appeal to a global audience.

In the realm of literary acclaim, “The Alchemist” stands as a curious case. It’s a book that has sold millions of copies and been translated into dozens of languages, yet it remains divisive among critics. Some hail it as a masterpiece of spiritual literature, while others, like myself, see it as a prime example of how shallow, feel-good platitudes can be mistaken for profound wisdom. For those seeking genuine insight and inspiration, there are far more substantial works out there. But if you prefer your philosophy served with a heavy dose of sugar and a side of magical thinking, then by all means, dive into the saccharine sea that is “The Alchemist.” Just don’t be surprised when you surface feeling empty.

Another issue with “The Alchemist” is its heavy reliance on allegory to convey its messages. While allegory can be a powerful literary tool, Coelho’s use of it often feels overly simplistic and heavy-handed. The symbols and metaphors in the book, such as the desert representing life’s challenges and the treasure symbolizing personal fulfillment, are so transparent that they leave little room for interpretation or deeper thought. This lack of subtlety can be frustrating for readers who prefer more nuanced storytelling that allows them to draw their own conclusions rather than being spoon-fed the author’s intended messages.

Additionally, the plot of “The Alchemist” is remarkably predictable and formulaic. Santiago’s journey follows a well-worn path of the hero’s quest, complete with standard tropes like the wise mentor, the trials and tribulations, and the ultimate revelation. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with following a classic narrative structure, Coelho fails to bring anything new or innovative to the table. The story unfolds in a manner that’s almost too smooth, with obstacles that seem conveniently surmountable and a conclusion that wraps everything up in a neat, overly satisfying bow. This predictability undermines the potential for genuine suspense or emotional investment in the protagonist’s journey.

Lastly, “The Alchemist” tends to oversimplify complex life issues, reducing them to easily digestible moral lessons. The book’s central theme—that one should follow their dreams and listen to their heart—while inspirational, can come off as naive and unrealistic when taken at face value. Real-life pursuits often involve significant sacrifices, unexpected setbacks, and nuanced decision-making, none of which are adequately addressed in Coelho’s narrative. By presenting such a rose-tinted view of the pursuit of personal legends, Coelho overlooks the intricacies and difficulties inherent in chasing one’s dreams. This oversimplification not only diminishes the book’s realism but also risks misleading readers about the true nature of personal and spiritual growth.

Allegory Over Substance

In “The Alchemist,” Paulo Coelho’s reliance on allegory over substantive storytelling often detracts from the depth and complexity that readers might expect from a novel with such lofty spiritual ambitions. Allegory, when used effectively, can provide rich layers of meaning that enhance a story. However, in Coelho’s hands, the allegorical elements are so overt and simplistic that they leave little room for personal interpretation or discovery. The clear-cut symbols and metaphors—like the desert symbolizing life’s challenges or the treasure representing personal fulfillment—are presented in such an obvious manner that they feel more like didactic lessons than nuanced storytelling. This approach can make the narrative feel more like a lecture on spirituality than an engaging and thought-provoking novel.

Furthermore, Coelho’s allegorical approach often sacrifices character development and plot complexity in favor of delivering clear moral messages. The characters in “The Alchemist” serve primarily as archetypes rather than fully realized individuals, existing mainly to convey specific ideas or lessons. Santiago, the protagonist, is less a flesh-and-blood character with unique struggles and more a symbolic everyman whose journey is meant to illustrate broader spiritual truths. This lack of character depth can make it difficult for readers to form a genuine connection with the story or its characters, as they come across as one-dimensional and static.

The plot itself is similarly constrained by the allegorical framework. Santiago’s journey follows a predictable and formulaic path, with each event and encounter designed to teach a specific lesson rather than contribute to a dynamic and engaging narrative. The story’s progression feels almost mechanical, with Santiago overcoming obstacles and meeting mentors in a manner that feels more like checking boxes on a spiritual checklist than embarking on a genuine adventure. This predictability reduces the sense of suspense and discovery, making the reading experience feel more like a guided tour through Coelho’s philosophical beliefs than an immersive and unpredictable journey.

Ultimately, the overemphasis on allegory in “The Alchemist” can make the novel feel superficial and didactic, undermining its potential impact. While Coelho’s intent to convey profound spiritual and philosophical insights is clear, the execution often falls short. By prioritizing allegorical symbolism over substantive character and plot development, the novel risks alienating readers who seek deeper, more nuanced explorations of the themes it addresses. Instead of inspiring reflection and personal insight, the heavy-handed allegory can leave readers feeling as though they’ve been handed a simplistic, one-size-fits-all solution to life’s complexities.

Falling Short of One’s Reputation and Hype

In conclusion, “The Alchemist” falls short of its reputation as a profound and transformative work of literature. Paulo Coelho’s heavy reliance on simplistic allegory and overt moral lessons undermines the novel’s potential for depth and complexity. The characters are one-dimensional archetypes, the plot is formulaic and predictable, and the supposed wisdom often comes off as trite and superficial. For readers seeking a rich and immersive narrative experience, “The Alchemist” offers little more than a series of fortune cookie philosophies wrapped in a thin veneer of mysticism. It fails to engage on a meaningful level, leaving an impression of superficiality rather than substance.

Ultimately, “The Alchemist” is a disappointing read that does not live up to its acclaim. While its themes of following one’s dreams and listening to one’s heart are universally appealing, the execution is so heavy-handed and reductive that it feels more like a self-help pamphlet than a work of serious fiction. The novel’s lack of character depth, plot complexity, and nuanced exploration of its themes results in a reading experience that is both unfulfilling and frustrating. For those who seek genuine literary and philosophical insights, “The Alchemist” is unlikely to satisfy, earning it a well-deserved one-star rating.

The Rise of Hazy IPAs: Exploring the Juicy Trend in Craft Beer https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/06/07/the-rise-of-hazy-ipas-exploring-the-juicy-trend-in-craft-beer/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-rise-of-hazy-ipas-exploring-the-juicy-trend-in-craft-beer Wed, 07 Jun 2023 14:25:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=11838 In recent years, the craft beer world has witnessed an extraordinary surge in popularity with the emergence of hazy IPAs. These delectable brews, also known as New England IPAs or NEIPAs, have captured the taste buds and imaginations of beer enthusiasts around the globe. Join us on a journey as we dive into the origins, brewing techniques, and the profound impact of hazy IPAs on the ever-evolving craft beer scene.

Understanding Hazy IPAs

Hazy IPAs have captured the hearts and palates of beer enthusiasts worldwide with their hazy appearance and explosive flavors. Through careful hop selection, generous dry hopping, and the omission of filtration, brewers have mastered the art of crafting these juicy delights. The result is a beer style that offers a refreshing and mouthwatering experience, with tropical and citrus flavors taking center stage. Whether you’re a seasoned craft beer enthusiast or new to the world of IPAs, exploring hazy IPAs opens up a whole new realm of sensory pleasure and showcases the boundless creativity of brewers in the craft beer industry.

Hazy IPAs: Unveiling the Juicy Delight

Hazy IPAs have taken the craft beer scene by storm, captivating beer enthusiasts with their distinct appearance and explosive flavor profiles. These beers are characterized by their hazy, opaque appearance, often resembling a glass of freshly squeezed fruit juice. But what sets them apart goes beyond their visual appeal – it’s the explosion of juicy flavors that truly makes hazy IPAs a delight for the senses.

Brewing Secrets: Crafting the Haze

The secret behind the haze lies in the brewing process. Brewers employ specific techniques to achieve the characteristic cloudiness and intense hop aroma of hazy IPAs. One key aspect is the careful selection of hops. Brewers opt for varieties that contribute tropical fruit, citrus, and stone fruit aromas, such as Citra, Mosaic, and Galaxy hops.

To maximize the hop flavors, brewers employ generous dry hopping. Dry hopping involves adding hops during or after fermentation, allowing the volatile oils and aromas to infuse the beer. In the case of hazy IPAs, brewers often employ multiple dry hop additions to enhance the hop character and create a more pronounced aroma.

Unlike traditional IPAs that undergo filtration to remove sediment and achieve clarity, hazy IPAs skip this step. By omitting filtration, the beer retains the naturally occurring proteins, hop particles, and yeast, resulting in the characteristic haze. This decision not only adds to the beer’s visual appeal but also contributes to its creamy and smooth mouthfeel.

The combination of the unique hop selection, generous dry hopping, and lack of filtration results in a beer bursting with intense hop aromas and flavors. Hazy IPAs often exhibit notes of tropical fruits like mango, pineapple, and passion fruit, as well as citrusy nuances of grapefruit and tangerine. The absence of filtration allows the hop oils and other flavor compounds to remain in suspension, giving hazy IPAs their juicy and fruit-forward character.

The popularity of hazy IPAs has led brewers to experiment with different hop combinations, exploring new and exciting flavors. Some brewers even incorporate fruit additions, such as pureed fruits or fruit juices, to enhance the beer’s fruity profile and create a more vibrant sensory experience.

The Origins of Hazy IPAs

Hazy IPAs have their roots in the New England region of the United States. Breweries like The Alchemist and Tree House Brewing Company in Vermont, and Trillium Brewing Company in Massachusetts, played pivotal roles in popularizing this style. These early pioneers focused on brewing hop-forward beers with a softer, smoother mouthfeel and a haziness that set them apart from their clear counterparts. As word spread and beer enthusiasts sought out these unique offerings, the popularity of hazy IPAs began to spread far beyond New England’s borders, influencing brewers worldwide.

From New England to a Worldwide Craze

Hazy IPAs, although now enjoyed by beer enthusiasts globally, have their origins deeply rooted in the New England region of the United States. The style emerged as a response to the prevailing trend of clear, West Coast-style IPAs, which showcased bold bitterness and crisp clarity. However, a group of pioneering breweries in New England sought to challenge the conventional notions of what an IPA could be.

In the early 2010s, breweries like The Alchemist, Tree House Brewing Company, and Trillium Brewing Company, among others, began experimenting with brewing IPAs that possessed a distinctive haze and a unique flavor profile. These breweries focused on creating beers that emphasized the juicy, fruity hop flavors while minimizing the bitter bite traditionally associated with IPAs.

One of the most notable early players in the hazy IPA movement was The Alchemist, located in Waterbury, Vermont. Their flagship beer, “Heady Topper,” became a cult favorite and an emblematic example of the hazy IPA style. Heady Topper showcased a hazy golden appearance, a smooth and creamy mouthfeel, and an explosion of tropical and citrus hop flavors. Beer enthusiasts lined up for hours to get their hands on this elusive and highly sought-after brew.

Around the same time, Tree House Brewing Company, based in Monson, Massachusetts, gained recognition for their hazy IPAs, particularly their flagship beer, “Julius.” Tree House focused on brewing hop-forward beers with a soft, pillowy mouthfeel and an intense fruitiness that delighted drinkers. Their dedication to quality and consistency elevated hazy IPAs to new heights.

Trillium Brewing Company, located in Boston, Massachusetts, also played a crucial role in shaping the hazy IPA movement. Trillium’s commitment to using fresh, locally sourced ingredients and their relentless pursuit of flavor excellence helped establish them as a leader in the craft beer industry. Their lineup of hazy IPAs, such as “Congress Street” and “Fort Point,” showcased the brewery’s ability to create beautifully balanced and exceptionally aromatic beers.

As word spread about the unique and enticing qualities of hazy IPAs, beer enthusiasts from all corners of the country and beyond sought out these breweries and their highly coveted beers. People would travel long distances, trade beers, and eagerly await releases, creating a fervent and passionate following.

The popularity of these New England breweries and their hazy IPAs sparked a phenomenon that quickly spread across the United States and, eventually, the world. As more breweries and beer drinkers embraced the style, hazy IPAs became a recognized and highly sought-after category in the craft beer landscape. Brewers from all regions began experimenting with their own interpretations of hazy IPAs, resulting in a vast array of styles, flavors, and variations.

Today, the influence of New England’s hazy IPAs can be seen in breweries worldwide, with countless interpretations and iterations of the style available to beer enthusiasts. The impact of these early pioneers cannot be overstated, as they paved the way for a beer revolution that continues to captivate palates and push the boundaries of what is possible in the world of craft beer.

The Popularity and Impact

Within Central Pennsylvania’s craft beer scene, one style has truly captured the hearts of both brewers and beer enthusiasts: hazy IPAs. These juicy and aromatic brews have become a sensation, drawing crowds and igniting a passionate following. The popularity of hazy IPAs in Central Pennsylvania reflects the broader craft beer movement, where these beers have earned a prominent place on tap lists and in beer fridges across the region.

The impact of hazy IPAs extends beyond their popularity among beer drinkers. These beers have spurred creativity and innovation among Central Pennsylvania’s breweries, inspiring brewers to experiment with hop varieties, adjuncts, and brewing techniques to create their own unique takes on the style. The rise of hazy IPAs has also contributed to the growth and expansion of the craft beer industry in Central Pennsylvania, attracting new breweries and fostering a sense of camaraderie and collaboration among brewers. As a result, the region’s craft beer scene has flourished, offering an abundance of hazy IPAs that showcase the talent and passion of Central Pennsylvania’s brewers.

The Allure of Hazy IPAs: A Consumer’s Delight

Hazy IPAs have gained immense popularity among beer enthusiasts for several reasons. One factor is their approachability. The juicy and fruit-forward flavor profile, coupled with a softer and less bitter hop presence compared to traditional IPAs, makes hazy IPAs more accessible to a wider audience. Additionally, their smooth and creamy mouthfeel adds to their allure, creating a highly enjoyable drinking experience.

Fueling Creativity: Brewer’s Perspective

Brewer’s Best – New England IPA Recipe and Kit

The rise of hazy IPAs has had a profound impact on the brewing industry. Brewers have embraced the style, pushing the boundaries of creativity and innovation. The hazy IPA trend has encouraged brewers to experiment with hop combinations, exploring new flavor profiles and showcasing the versatility of different hop varieties. As a result, the craft beer market has seen an influx of exciting hazy IPAs with unique hop profiles, tantalizing fruit additions, and captivating can designs. The popularity of hazy IPAs has also led to an increase in the number of breweries producing this style, further fueling its growth and diversifying the options available to consumers.

New England or Hazy IPAs have also become a favorite for home brewers to make. Its an easier style to produce, and the hops typically hide any deficiencies in the brewing process. If you attend any home brew festivals you will be sure to encounter many New England or Hazy IPAs, so be prepared. (Good thing you brought those pretzel necklaces along to cleanse out your pallet!)

The Top Ten Craft Breweries That Brewed the Most New Beers in the Year 2022 https://thebeerthrillers.com/2022/12/22/the-top-ten-craft-breweries-that-brewed-the-most-in-the-year-2022/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-top-ten-craft-breweries-that-brewed-the-most-in-the-year-2022 Fri, 23 Dec 2022 01:16:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=10111

Another End of the Year Article

Yes, this is yet again – ANOTHER – end of the year article. Part of a series that Untappd has put out, and I’ve followed and kept an interest and an eye on. (I do have to admit, despite nearly failing high school math, I’ve always enjoyed statistics, data, and how to read and interpret all the information.) You can see our previous articles of the Untappd series here:

I even went and made my own chart (or graph or whatever) on Canva using the information from the beers article (The Top 10 Craft Beers With the Most 5-Star Check-Ins of 2022). So be sure to check out the articles above to see the data and how they correlate.

This one is a little bit different. This list is looking at unique output. How many new beers did these breweries create (and added to Untappd) just this year. Its an interesting look at not just volume, but how much new volume these breweries have created.

Now, what constitutes a ‘new’ beer for Untappd can be a bit nebulous. If I make Beer A, and then make Beer B and just call it Beer B (2022) technically thats a new beer as far as Untappd unique beers would be concerned. Even though its Mad Elf, Mad Elf (2021), and Mad Elf (2022). In that example, Untappd would treat it as three unique beers, despite obviously its the same beer.

So let’s take a look at the latest Untappd ‘end of the year’ list and article:

The Top 10 Breweries With the Most Beers Created in 2022

  • 10. Orchestrated Minds Brewing (Fort Lauderdale, FL) – 186 Unique Beers Added
  • 9. Humble Sea Brewing (Santa Cruz, CA) – 187 Unique Beers Added
  • 8. Burial Beer Company (Asheville, NC) – 195 Unique Beers Added
  • 7. Three Notch’d Brewing (Charlottesville, VA) – 204 Unique Beers Added
  • 6. TailGate Brewing Company (Nashville, TN) – 205 Unique Beers Added
  • 5. Imprint Beer Company (Hatfield, PA) – 206 Unique Beers Added
  • 4. Mirror Twin Brewing (Lexington, KY) – 215 Unique Beers Added
  • 3. Odell Brewing Company (Fort Collins, CO) – 224 Unique Beers Added
  • 2. Other Half Brewing Company (Brooklyn, NY) – 281 Unique Beers Added
  • 1. Tree House Brewing Company (Charlton, MA) – 362 Unique Beers Added

Data

A chart of the new beers by brewery

The lower numbers are relatively close to each other, 186, 187, 195, then a small jump to 204 and then its followed by 205 and 206, and then a bigger jump to 281 and then the final jump to 362. So this is another list that Tree House Brewing Company has made (thats three now – they were also included in the most five star check ins by beer and most five star check ins by brewery), Other Half also has made it onto two lists now as well (also with most five star check ins by brewery).

Two breweries from Pennsylvania made the list. Imprint Beer Company made the list with 206 unique beers, and multi – state brewery Other Half Brewing Company (New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington D. C. ) made it with 281 unique beers.

All data was compiled from January 1st through December 9th 2022.

End of the Year

As I said in our last end of the year article: What Regions Drank the Most (2022):

Its the end of the year, and what that usually entails is a whole slew of “end of the year lists”. Top 10 this… top 38 that… top 69 (heeheehee) this and that…. Top 314.181928102810 Pies, etc.

We are going to post a few this year. In the past we’ve kinda shied away from posting these sorts of articles, because the metrics and information is kind of… biased in a way. Its basically just reading off Untappd’s information and lists and going with it. For example, recently Breweries in PA did a final end of the year Top 10 Pennsylvania Breweries listing article, using Untappd’s information, and well… it was received as well as you can imagine. Mainly because they didn’t put in any filters or restrictions or limits to it. So just before the list was posted, Country Club Brewing Company (see an article about them here: Country Club Brewing Company Announces Opening) had their grand opening. They had roughly 1,000 check – ins on the Untappd app, and being a grand opening most of them were very favorable (mostly four caps or better). So needless to say this put a lot of readers and breweries themselves up in arms about it. It actually listed them at number three (out of ten). (The other thing that irked most was that Other Half Brewing Company was listed, when they have several non – Pennsylvanian locations.)

But… I’m gonna go out on a limb and use Untappd to post some of these lists. If nothing else we can look back at them as just data charts and analyze them for the statistics. At best, they prompt some conversation and discussion (and we all know how well that goes on the internet).

Thanks For Reading

Thank you everyone for checking out the article. We enjoy having you come to the site! In the next few days I’ll be posting a few more lists and variants and such. So be sure to stop back out each day for that.

Like I said in our previous post, lots still going on here at the blog despite it being the end of the year. I’m also heading back to work in a few days time, so things will be picking up work wise as well. So it’ll be holidays, work, baby Scarlet, and the blog. Busy. Busy. Busy. But, like I did say on the last post, Josh and I were invited out to Central PA Pour to do a podcast, which was an absolute blast. We filmed and recorded that on the 18th, and that will be going live just before New Years. So look for that. Should be entertaining and fun. We had a blast.

Cheers All!

Part Two of Two

This is the second part of two articles that are pretty closely similar. As I said in the first part (The Top Ten Breweries with the Most Five Star Ratings of 2022) Untappd through their blog has just put out a lot of “End of the Year” lists / articles. I’m not going to rehash all of them, but the ones I found interesting I am covering here on The Beer Thrillers blog. This one ties in with the other one very nicely, and I think we can kind of correlate the two to get some better ideas and information. The first part was about the breweries themselves. This one is about the craft beers in particular.

Between these two articles we should be able to take some looks and figure out some trends from 2022. Discussing the first article with my friend Drew and Josh, I came to realize that Yuengling being second probably represented a lot of “nostalgic” love for Yuengling and people giving their Traditional Lager a high five star rating – for reasons like nostalgia, their ‘hometown’ (even if they live in the corners of the state), its the beer their dad grew up drinking and so did they (before getting into craft beer proper), and who else knows why. I thought the other big thing was how much of a jump it went from the second spot to the first spot – a 32,000 check in increase. When number two is at 19,000, and spot one is at 51,000; thats a crazy big jump.

So let’s see how that then plays into which of the craft beers themselves were checked in with five star ratings the most.

The Top 10 Craft Beers With the Most 5 – Star Check – Ins of 2022

  • 10. Duvel (Duvel Moortgat) – 3,796 Check Ins
  • 9. Hopslam Ale (2022) (Bell’s Brewery) – 3,910 Check Ins
  • 8. Focal Banger (The Alchemist) – 4,044 Check Ins
  • 7. Trappist Westvleteren (Brouwerij DeSint – Sixtusabdij Van Westvleteren) – 4,097 Check Ins
  • 6. King Julius (Tree House Brewing Co.) – 4,574 Check Ins
  • 5. Zombie Dust (Three Floyds Brewing Co.) – 4,999 Check Ins
  • 4. Two Hearted Ale (Bell’s Brewery) – 5,823 Check Ins
  • 3. Traditional Lager (Yuengling Brewing) – 8,529 Check Ins
  • 2. Heady Topper (The Alchemist) – 9,994 Check Ins
  • 1. Pliny the Elder (Russian River Brewing Company) – 10,635 Check Ins

So this is a bit interesting. Despite coming in first with 51,000 check ins that were five star, Tree House only has one beer on the top ten list. Bell’s Brewery and The Alchemist both have two. (Bell’s Brewery was also number two on the craft brewery list, and The Alchemist was number five.)

Data

A bar graph and percentage chart showing five of the ten breweries and their total number of five star rated check ins.

So giving the data above, I made a quick chart / graph on Canva to show five of the ten beers. I decided on the two breweries that had two beers listed – Bell’s Brewery and The Alchemist; as well as including the number one – Russian River; and included Tree House since they were the number one from the previous article (The Top Ten Breweries with the Most Five Star Ratings of 2022), and chose Yuengling lastly just because they are the “local boys” and an interesting factoid (given how people’s views on them being ‘craft’ are).

I totaled up the ten beers and it came out to be 60,401 check ins. I then did the math to figure out what percentage these five breweries were in the total. As you can see they make up a total of 78.6% of the total. That leaves three other breweries making up the remaining 21.4%.

Another interesting note – if Zombie Dust had just one more five star check in, they would have had 5,000 exactly.

Other End of the Year Articles

Cheers All!

The Battle of the Beers – The Final Four – Results (2022) https://thebeerthrillers.com/2022/07/29/the-battle-of-the-beers-the-final-four-results-2022/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-battle-of-the-beers-the-final-four-results-2022 Fri, 29 Jul 2022 14:43:44 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=9584
The Battle of the Beers – The Final Four (Results Page) (2022)

Then There Was Four… And Now There is Two

Another round of hard fought battles is over, and the dust is settling this fine Friday morning. Where once stood four gladiators now stands two, and the broken glass and cans of the other two lay at their feet (…or base of their bottle). We are now at our final two competitors, the finals, the end, the completion of this long and grueling, arduous competition – all to declare who is the toughest, the strongest, the most fittest of thirty two flagship beers practically chosen at random by myself.

Results

Let’s dive into the Final Four’s results:

  • (4) Toppling Goliath – Pseudo Sue (with 31 votes) defeated (1) The Alchemist – Heady Topper (with 12 votes)
  • (9) Von C Brewing – Walking on Clouds (with 120 votes) defeated (18) Troegs Independent Craft Brewing – Perpetual IPA (with 21 votes)

Statistics

  • Toppling Goliath was the only upset victory this week – with a (4) over a (1).
  • Von C Brewing was the only favorite victory this week – with a (9) over a (18).
  • Von C Brewing’s Walking on Clouds had the most votes again this week with 120 votes.
  • This was 99 votes over Troegs Brewing’s Perpetual IPA.

The Finals

This makes us all set for the finals now, and what a finals its looking to be!

It will pit Toppling Goliath’s Pseudo Sue vs. Von C Brewing’s Walking on Clouds. Its looking to be a true “David vs. Goliath” match up here (ahahahaha…. get the pun…. get it? ….Do you see it? Get it? …Sigh.)

The voting article will be posted shortly. All prior rules still apply for the Finals. You can vote daily, you can share the post to get as many people voting as possible, etc. The voting will end on August 4th at 11:59PM EST. (So next Thursday into Friday at Midnight it will end.)

Past Battle of the Beers Articles

How did we get to the Finals:

Wrap Up

Thank you all for checking out the results and participating in the tournament. This is our first Battle of the Beers tournament, but our third tournament overall (after having done a Battle of the Breweries (2021) and a Battle of the Breweries (2022)). These are a lot of fun to run and manage, and its great to see the participation of the fans and community. So I just want to thank everyone for coming to The Beer Thrillers blog and participating in the tournament. You guys make all this happen and without you there would be no tournaments or The Beer Thrillers in general. So we greatly appreciate all your support and everything.

Some Recent Articles of Note

Thanks For Reading

Tomorrow we will be down in Newfreedom for a memorial service for my Aunt Linda. After that, we might be going to various places, not sure. This weekend is also the Black Flag Brewing Company’s 6th Anniversary, so we might be stopping there. There is also the Schulkyll Brewfest this weekend. So might try and get there for that too. I might be going with Drew or Amy today to the Black Flag Brewery, if not today, then possibly tomorrow after the service. But as everything else, the future is fluid, so who knows. Thanks for reading!

Well, wherever we’ll end up, ya’ll will know it!

Cheers!
