It’s Pumpkin Time! (Grandma SueAnn and Amy Review Zombies and Double Zombies are People Too and Braaaiins!)

It’s Pumpkin Time!

So…. a couple leaves have changed color on the tree in our front yard. So…. it’s technically not too early, right? I can talk about pumpkin spice now? They were the first ones I saw in the store and I had to grab a couple for me and Grandma SueAnn to enjoy. (See: A Beer Review by Grandma SueAnn [Beer Review: Braaaiins! by Spring House Brewing Company].)

We were shopping at the local Weiss and I saw it on an end-cap and I had to have it. Braaaiins by Spring House Brewing Company. I grabbed the 4pack with the approving nod from the boyfriend. I could hardly wait long enough for them to chill. Grandma SueAnn was in agreement; kicking our pumpkin beer drinking season off with a loved classic was the way to go. The first pumpkin beer of the year, near end of August, and I had to grab it!

Braaaiins! by Spring House Brewing

Once chilled this pumpkin ale is the perfect beer to kick off Autumn with. It is described on Untapped as “our pumpkin ale is brewed with generous amounts of real pumpkin blended into the mash. The subtle fresh pumpkin flavor is enhanced by the addition of a touch of traditional autumn spices and sweet dough, thus creating a beer with an orange amber color, warm pumpkin aroma, a bold malt center and a crisp finish. We are proud to offer you a balanced and delectable fall treat. Suitable for zombies.” It has an 8.5% ABV so I isn’t anything to mess around with. It has an overall rating on Untapped of 3.70.

Zombies are People Too by New Trail Brewing

On another occasion we swung into West Connection Beer Vault in Hummelstown (find West Connection Beer Vault on Facebook). Amongst the mix of six we picked out were two from New Trail Brewing. (We also scored a fantastic Barleywine by 3 Floyds Brewing – Pillar of Beasts. See Ben’s beer review of that here: Beer Review: Pillar of Beasts by 3 Floyds Brewing.)

Zombies Are People Too and Double Zombies, two pumpkin beers from the mid – Central PA brewery up in Williamsport. They clock in at a 5.7%ABV and an 8.5% ABV respectively. My first instinct was to see if Grandma SueAnn could tell the difference between the two New Trail pumpkin beers. (Because who better to try out new pumpkin beers with than Grandma SueAnn?) Yes, the Double Zombies has a higher ABV but Double Zombies is also supposed to be packed with, according to Untapped “twice the strength, maple syrup, vanilla, and pumpkin spice.” Grandma SueAnn thought she tasted just a bit more spice to Double Zombies but she happily helped me drink both pumpkin beers.

Overall though we enjoyed both of the New Trail pumpkin options. In the mid-state (Harrisburg area) you can find them at your different beer distributors and bottle shops like Breski’s Beverages, West Connection Beer Vault, Brass Rail, Bradford Village Beer and Soda, as well as at your grocery stores like Wegmans, Weiss, and Giant. You might even be able to find them in some gas stations like Rutters, WaWa, or Sheetz. So be on the lookout and the hunt!

Project I Scream, Brew Scream – a collaboration with Goose Island Beer Co. and Sheetz

Sheetz and Goose Island Beer Co. Collaborate

Sheetz has done several beer collaborations now. Like the original one they did with Neshaminy Creek Brewing back in May 2020 – a hot dog flavored beer. (Sheetz collaborates with Pa. brewery on beer made with hot dogs – PennLive.com) They’ve also done a collab with Rusty Rail Brewing Company, Evil Genius Brewing Company, and Wicked Weed Brewing Company; and now this collaboration with Goose Island Beer Company. (This marks the second collaboration with a subsidiary of AB InBev – Wicked Weed Brewing Company and Goose Island Brewing Company.)

This time their collaboration is a Milkshake IPA. 6.8% ABV, so in that medium to moderate range (for comparison sake – Perpetual IPA by Troegs Independent Craft Brewing; their flagship – is 7.5%). According to the Untappd page, the description reads: “Brewed in partnership between Goose Island Beer Company of Chicago and Sheetz, Project I Scream, Brew Scream is brewed with Sheetz Bros. strawberry and banana puree. A light and fruity beer with a kiss of hop to balance the strawberry sweetness.”

Sheetz, a legendary mid-Atlantic gas/convenience store chain, announced a bigtime collaboration with Goose Island Beer that should pair perfectly with the long Memorial Day Weekend.

Here’s the deal…

Established in 1952 in Altoona, Pennsylvania, Sheetz is one of America’s fastest-growing family-owned and operated convenience store chains with more than 20,000 employees.

The company which operates more than 600 store locations throughout Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Ohio and North Carolina has evolved into much more than gas stations that sell snacks into outlets with award-winning foods and their own limited release beers.

This is certainly an interesting IPA Milkshake. First off, I think IPA Milkshakes are interesting to begin with. They can certainly walk that fine line of interesting, good, and horribly nasty. We’ve covered a few Milkshake IPAs here on The Beer Thrillers before, like – Abbra Collabra 6 Way Banana Split Milkshake IPA – by Tattered Flag, Abomination Brewing, Pilger Ruh Brewing, Rotunda Brewing Company, Collusion Tap Works, and Snitz Creek Brewery.

So let’s get to the review.

Starting with appearance, this looks like a fine Milkshake IPA. It has the golden hue of a typical hazier style IPA (like New England IPAs, Milkshake IPAs, and the similar ilk). Distinctive look, appearance, and smoothness from the lactose. This looks exactly like a model Milkshake IPA. Good head, good retention, and good lacing.

This has a very strawberry and banana nose. Not a hop profile in the aroma and nose, but certainly banana, strawberry, and a bit of sweetness from the lactose in the milkshake department. It certainly nails that.

There is a sweetness right out the gate in the first sip. You can tell this is a Milkshake IPA right off the bat. I always enjoy a beer that I know immediately what I am getting as soon as I start sipping it, nothing hidden, nothing coy or cutesy, just a well descriptive beer that delivers on its description. There is a creamy, smooth, milky profile to this, you get the lactose, and it makes it smooth. This kind of tastes like a strawberry – banana bubblegum flavor from when we were kids, like Bubbalicious or something similar. Its fruity, its pretty strong, but the taste does mellow off pretty quick. There is a bit of a hop kick at the end of this, but its not super hoppy, and not as strong as some in the group I was drinking with this thought (personal opinion I suppose). Speaking of personal opinion, I’m not a very huge fan of strawberry, so the beer loses a bit of enjoyment for me on that – but I recognize that as a personal opinion – the beer does do a good job of presenting the strawberry flavors with the banana flavors. I wish there was a bit more of a hop punch, but all things considered thats not a huge problem. The beer is a little watery thin for me, its got a slight cloying nature to the tongue, possibly due to the lactose and cream like flavor to this, not a hundred percent sure on that. All in all its not bad for a relatively large scale production aimed for cheap at gas stations, and especially given that its produced by an AB InBev subsidary to boot.

This is nothing thats going to be blowing anyone away, but its certainly getting the job done. Cheap four packs at Sheetz gas stations and easy to find is always a beautiful thing. Would be nice to see Sheetz do more collaborations like this but with local true independent craft breweries, ones like Troegs Independent Craft Brewing, or Tattered Flag Brewery, or Iron Hill Brewing, or New Trail Brewing Company. Or even smaller ones (less likely) like Boneshire Brew Works, Moo – Duck Brewing, Wolf Brewing Company, or Hemauer Brewing Company.

Beer Review: Daebak Kettle Sour (The Booth Brewing Co.)

Daebak Kettle Sour by The Booth Brewing Company (US)

This is what a post-blood donation meal looks like. A nice beer, a big quesadilla from Sheetz, and not pictured but there, a big bucket of Sheetz fries as well. Typically I would do a huge stout to build back up, but I decided to keep working into the beer mail I got, and I chose this – Daebak (Berry) Kettle Sour by The Booth Brewing Company (out of US).

The Booth Brewing Company originally started in Seoul South Korea before moving to the United States. (Eureka California to be exact.) As per their Untappd page: “At The Booth Brewing Company, we brew more than just beer; we create a lifestyle. We craft our beer with all natural ingredients, both traditional and innovative brewing ingredients. We embrace big and bold but specialize in balanced and tasty. If you are ready to challenge your taste buds and “follow your fun”, come join us for any one of our special brews!” They have 41 unique beers listed for a global average rating of 3.82 (as of 2.25.20). They are listed as a micro-brewery. The Korean page for The Booth Brewing on Untappd – The Booth Brewing Korea – has 49 unique beers and has a global average rating of 3.35 (as of 2.25.20).

Beer Mail from Eureka California

The Daebak Kettle Sour came from Eureka California in a beer mail trade I did. Its the third from the package to be reviewed here on The Beer Thrillers (I previously did Sunshine and Opportunity and Chocolate Confidential). The rest will follow in the days / weeks to come, have no fear.

Featuring delicate notes of blueberry and vanilla…. A splash of tart, a taste of fruit! The Booth Brewing Co. started in Seoul, South Korea. Our three founders set out to create a place where young like-minded people could gather to drink quality craft beer and change the world.

The can art is pretty cool for this, inspired by Pac-Man it certainly looks interesting. Here’s two promotional pictures from The Booth’s website:

And who doesn’t love Pac-Man? He’s a staple and a video game stalwart. I just find the can label cool, simplistic, but obvious and recognizable. I do love the can art and labels that craft breweries come up with and its such an essential part of marketing and branding; not just for the particular beer but for the brewery and company as a whole.

Ok, with no further adieu, lets get to the beer.

Appearance is light honeyed golden yellow. It has the bright glow of a tart sour, and it has the bubbly nature of one as well. Its translucent and got great clarity with a fantastic head to it. This looks exactly in line with tart sours like berliner weisse’s and farmhouse saisons. None heavy fruited sours (and kettle sours) can also look this way.

Aroma has a crisp tart smell to it, berry notes with a hint of funkyness. You can smell raspberry and blueberry, but “funked up”. It has a very crisp clean smell to it, nothing extreme, nothing super strong, nothing assaulting your nostrils, and certainly nothing off or bad. The aroma for this is actually kind of tame.

Taste is tart, crisp, bubbly, with hint of berry. The berries in this – raspberry and blueberry – are pretty mellow, but they are there, and they are funky. This is a kettle sour, This does bring the funk and does bring the tartness. Its crisp and clearness is nice and pleasant. The ABV is ridiculously low on this (3.5%) so you don’t even feel it, even after donating a liter of blood. This is a good refreshing beer, a four pack of this would go down easily, or it’d make a great starter beer for a night of fun. Its just a simple, pleasant beer that delivers exactly what you’re hoping and looking for with it – clean, crisp, well made, tart, funk, berry flavored kettle sour.

Me donating blood

This was supposed to be finished before work, but didn’t quite make it in time, so I finished it just before getting to D. Scott’s for the podcasts. As you can see, after work yesterday (Monday, Feb. 24th, 2020), I dropped Chris (a co-worker) off at his mechanic to get his car back, then went to the Hershey Library to donate blood. I try to donate regularly, as close to my eight week mark as I can. One donation can save up to three lives. Ok, coming down from my soap box, lets talk about the next few days for me and the blog here at The Beer Thrillers. Tonight (literally as soon as this publishes), I am doing two podcasts with the guys at So a Mexican and a Scot Walk Into a Bar…. the first is the next episode of our LOST Podcasts – covering Seasons 3 and 4, this podcast will be with myself, Esteban, and Trevor. Tomorrow then around noon I’m walking down to Rubber Soul to tour and check out their new facility here in Hummelstown.
