Sitting here at the end of another beautiful weekend and it turned out NOTHING like how we planned it. Huge plans got swept out from underneath us. Then the substitute plans got turned all around. So we were able to get away for a partial day and have time to ourselves….that also involved beer. Because you know each ones of these plans absolutely involved BEER!!
We tried to make the best of the free time and still do something together. The parameters were these items: Within two hours of home, hike spot (not to difficult) and a new to us brewery not far from the hike spot.
We decided to set our sights on checking out St. Peter’s Village Hiking trail. All Trails lists it as “Saint Pete’s Trail” a moderate trail with a 2.2 mile loop. We were nervous to get out on the trail with how full the parking lot was, especially since we brought Leela with, but we didn’t realize people also park there when visiting the village stores.
The “blue and yellow” trail by the markings started out with lots of graffiti. You could tell some of it was old since algae was growing overtop of it from the side of a boulder. The first mile or so is all incline. Let me tell you how that gets the heart rate going! Once you hit the top of the trail it winds back down and you are on a decline most of the way back. The only items that was hard about the trail was avoiding the mud near the end of the yellow trail before it connected back to the yellow.
We split a hike beer from Tired Hands. I was super excited about this one since it was part of a 420 PUNGE DAY release. Planet Punge is described on Facebook at their intra-conically dry-hopped version of Punge. When I tasted this beer, I was ready to bet it had phantasm powder in it. (See Amy’s beer review of Fourscore Beer Co’s phantasm powder infused beer – Phantomania here – Beer Review: Phantomania.) However their description on Facebook goes on to describe it “For the uninitiated, an intra-conical dry-hopping is when we only dry-hop a beer in its conical fermenter ONLY and not in our brew kettles. We do this to make the hop character of the beer incredibly FLORAL & BOL, and to keep the bitterness from the hops incredibly low. The taste was amazing and it made for the perfect hike beer. Near the end of the trail I may have stepped, accidently in the water while hoping on some rocks. To state my displeasure was an understatement. I must say, though, the new hike boots I was trying to wear in are definitely waterproof. The water that went overtop of the shoe stayed in the show and didn’t escape. I was relieved to remember right away that I packed another two pairs of sneakers to change into. Always pack extra shoes and socks!
Hares Hill Brewing Co.
We all but closed our eyes and picked from a map the brewery to visit. And we picked Hare’s Hill Brewing Co. When we first walked in we only saw a bar area. I thought to myself shoot, I felt like sitting at a table after that hike! We quickly saw a few other rooms and the waitress told us we could pick any table. Right away we picked out a flight of Space boy (Imperial Double IPA), Gnarly Rabbit (IPA American), The Goddess (New England Hazy IPA), Ditto (Hefeweizen). These all were solid beers the only thing we wish is to have at least one stout, porter or with the season a saison or seltzer.
We also split the Junkyard Fries. At first, we thought it sounded similar to poutine. The menu described it as St. Lucifer dusted fried, topped with brisket, cheese, bacon caramelized onions, garlic aioli and Dr. Pepper BBQ sauce.
That was it for the day and we prepared for our 1 hour and 12 minute ride home. It’s so important to do these types of things to reconnect and relax. We took many moments while hiking to stop and look around to soak in the peacefulness.
