The competitor’s list for the 2025 Battle of the Breweries

The Battle of the Breweries – 2025

Its finally here — The Battle of the Breweries (2025)! And today you get your first look at the competitors, all 256 breweries, that will be squaring off, to determine the number 1 brewery! Of course, this is all for fun, and no one is really fighting to the death. But it is a fun, yearly competition we do here at The Beer Thrillers. Similar in vein to that of the NCAA March Madness.

Each year we do things slightly different. This year is our biggest yet, with 256 competing breweries from Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, South Carolina, Arizona, Nevada, and Washington D.C. Each year we get to visit more and more breweries, adding more and more breweries to our roster of possible competitors.

The rules for the competition are pretty straight forward. Breweries are only eligible if: we have physically visited one of their brewery or taproom locations. This goes for any of the writers on the staff – Ben, Amy, Josh, Paul. After that, we pick which breweries we want in the competition out of the full list of all possible breweries we’ve been to, and from there, each brewery is randomly assigned to one of four conferences. Each conference has 64 breweries. And the conferences are set up like NCAA March Madness bracket style. 1st seed vs. 64th seed, 2nd seed vs. 63rd seed, etc.

After each round, the winners move on. So first round will be all four conferences, Round of 64, then the round of 32, then the round of 16, then round of 8, then the round of 4, finally for each conference the round of 2 to determine the conference winner. After that, we take the winner of each conference and have them face off in a Fatal Four-Way to determine the overall winner of this year’s Battle of the Breweries!

Seeding is by global average Untappd rating. The higher the Untappd rating, the higher the seeding. So a 5.00 Untappd rating would be a 1 seed, and a .001 Untappd rating would be a 64 seed. (Obviously no brewery has either of those two ratings.)

The tournament will be starting on Monday, February 17th, 2025.

Its that time of the year again! And of course its snowing to boot! The Pennsylvania Farm Show is in full swing, and they’ve just released the list of winners of the Beer competitions for this year. On the day we got back from Vegas, January 3rd, the 109th Annual Pennsylvania Farm Show kicked off. Today, on January 6th, they’ve announced the winners. So lets get to it!

Pennsylvania Best in Beer Farm Show Competition Awards and Winners

The 2025 Pennsylvania Farm Show logo

The 109th Annual Pennsylvania Farm Show kicked off on January 3rd, 2025. The competition for the Best in Beer category has been an intense competition in past years. You can see the results here:

As with last year, John Stemler was the head judge of the brewing competition. Beers had to be submitted and received no later than November 11th 2024 (Veteran’s Day / Scarlet’s birthday). The full list of rules and regulations can be found here at the Farm Show’s website for Department 34 (beer): 2025 PA Farm Show – Department 34 Beer Contest.

Pennsylvania’s State Fair showcases top
competitors from 108 county and local fairs, and the
diversity and quality of Pennsylvania’s agriculture
industry, the innovative people who make it thrive,
and the faces of our proud past and promising
future. The show offers visitors a peek into the
industry that supports 593,000 Pennsylvania jobs
and contributes $132.5 billion to Pennsylvania’s
economy every year. See you at the PA Farm Show!

Best in Beer Winners – 2025

First, you can see the full list of entries and winners directly from the Farm Show’s site here: 2025 PA Farm Show – Department 34 Beer Contest. The PDF page is a bit confusing and shows all entries, how many points they received, if they are PA Preferred, and if they won a medal. No mention of categories or anything.

I will help you out here and break down the categories (best that I can) and show who won what place, and will list if it’s PA Preferred (more on what that is afterwards).

For a full list of all Farm Show competitions, and winners, you can view their Results page here: 109th Annual Farm Show Results.

The Battle of the Breweries (2024) – Round of 32

The Battle of the Breweries

Its March 1st and that means The Battle of the Breweries is ready to kick off! We have already hosted the Primary Qualifiers to select the 32nd seed for each conference. And so now begins the full fledged tournament, with all 128 breweries competing to see who will become the ultimate Battle of the Breweries Champion for this year!

The first round – The Round of 32 – will last until the end of Sunday March 10th, at 11:59:59 PM EST. And the second round will begin on Monday, March 11th around 9AM EST.

The Battle of the Breweries (2024) is set up with four conferences of 32 (counting the “win and you’re in” brewery) for a total of 128 breweries in the main tournament (140 participating breweries in total). They will compete in single elimination rounds (Best of 32, Best of 16, Best of 8, Final Four, Finals) for each conference, before each conference will send their winner to the “Finals Fatal Four-Way” to determine the winner of this year’s Battle of the Breweries.

Breweries will be competing from Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Arizona, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia.

You can see our previous topics about the tournament for this year here:

We encourage you to go onto social media and share this post, as well as to follow our Facebook, Instagram, and other pages to stay up to date on the tournament. You can vote once per day for each conference’s blocks (once we’re in the main tournament, each conference will have their own distinct article). So to better your favorite (or your own personal) brewery’s chances of winning – we highly recommend sharing and letting all of your friends and family (and even your enemies) know to vote for you.

You can follow along with us on Facebook and Instagram.

The Rules

There’s gotta be some kind of rules to this madness right? This madness of March (and well, this year the end of February as well… and yes… also a bit of April as the tournament goes into that month as well). So… what are the rules involved?

To pull straight from the initial March Madness / Battle of the Breweries post:

So how’s this going to work? Who all is invited? What all breweries are going to be in it? How many breweries? How’s voting going to work? Who decides whose in and whose out? Whats the seeding? Why is Rick such a jerk to Morty? Why is Jurassic Bark the saddest episode of Futurama ever?  Why is the sky blue?

Ok…. enough with the questions!

March Madness (2021) – The Battle of the Breweries (2021)

Breweries are selected from breweries that have been visited by The Beer Thrillers staff.

Voting Rules

You can vote once per day, for each conference. Each day you can visit each of the Conference Articles and scroll down to the voting block, and vote once for each brewery duel. Each day you will be able to come to the site to make your votes in the polls. It will be set-up by IPS, so it limits you to voting just once per day per vote.
