Our podcast with Lew Bryson is now up and downloadable for all to enjoy! As we noted before – Seen Through a Glass Podcast Appearance – we got to meet with the esteemed Lew Bryson at Boneshire Brew Works on January 6th.

It was a wonderful experience, and we probably ran longer than he anticipated / wanted (Josh and I have a tendency to get a little windy, especially when drinking, and we also had Amy with as well who tried to curtail us somewhat). We sat in the back of the brewhouse at Boneshire Brew Works, drinking beer (I had the Barleywine x2 in my Mug Club mug, Josh had his trusty Mug, Lew got to try the Testify, and Amy had the Green Machine with coconut), we also got to enjoy a marzen from New Glarus, and we had ourselves a wonderful time despite the snow.

Speaking of the snow – the day was a beautiful snowy day…. that just kept piling up. Soon after our interview, Boneshire Brew Works closed for the day, as did most of the breweries in the Central PA area.

(One could make a comment that its that good old fashioned “Farm Show” weather.)

Season 2, Episode 31: Let’s Talk Beer

To listen to the podcast directly at the website, you can visit here:

Or you can download it via Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, PodBean, Spotify or Player FM.

The full description of the page reads:

Mass beer hysteria!

I wanted to get more beer content in the podcast, so I invited The Beer Thrillers! Ben Kline, Amy Wolfe, and Josh Doncevic write The Beer Thrillers blog, which is…mostly about beer in Central PA, but they do book reviews (and not just beer books), beer trips well outside the area, and…well, a lot of stuff. We got together at Boneshire Brew Works on a snowy Saturday, ate great pizza and drank great beer while talking about hazy IPAs, the resurgence of classic styles, and why so many Central PA breweries went under recently.

What else? A quick Farm Show report (Goat Sloppy Joes!), and a description of the Burns Night dinner my wife and I are hosting; the annual commemoration of Scottish poet Robert Burns.

Next episode: a town profile episode, because I know you love ’em! Cheers!

We are working on a massive project here at The Beer Thrillers. We are creating a map of all of the breweries across the United States. State by state we are adding maps of all of the different states with every brewery in each state. (We will eventually get to the US Territories, as well as the Canadian Provinces, and possibly more countries; as well as doing some fun maps like a map of all the breweries we’ve been to, and other fun maps.) You can find the brewery maps here:

We are also working on a project of creating printable and downloadable PDFs and resources to be able to check and keep track of all of the breweries you’ve been to. So stay tuned for that project once we are finished with the Brewery Maps of the US States.

Boneshire Brew Works Celebrates Their 6th Anniversary This Friday – October 28th, 2022

Happy Anniversary!

Lets all give a hip hip hooray for another year of Boneshire Brew Works! Its their sixth anniversary, and they are going as strong if not stronger than ever. Its so great to see them growing and getting bigger and Friday is shaping up to be another great event for them.

Pretty…. Pretty…. Pretty…. Pretty Good

Its no surprise to say we’re big fans of Boneshire Brew Works here at The Beer Thrillers. Both myself (B. Kline) and Josh (J. Doncevic) are mug club members several years going now. Amy also loves coming over to have beers (while… before she went and got herself pregnant), and Leela (the faithful four legged companion to The Beer Thrillers) loves sitting outside and watching the cars on Derry Street.

We all love going to Boneshire Brew Works’ main brewery on Derry Street in Rutherford Pennsylvania (outskirts of Harrisburg). Its a great local meet up place, a great brewery, and a very chill atmosphere, a bar where ‘everyone knows your name’. And thats one of the biggest selling points of Boneshire Brew Works, why they are such a great member of the community, and why its so wonderful to see them growing and getting to celebrate their sixth anniversary.

Featured article: Boneshire Brew Works Is Celebrating Their 5th Anniversary.

So let’s talk about Friday.

Friday Party

What better place to catch the World Series Game 1 at? Hopefully get to see Aaron Nola throw a perfect game against the Houston Astros maybe? Wouldn’t that be a great capper to this party!

But first, before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s talk about what Boneshire Brew Works has going on that night:

First off, you can find the event here: Boneshire Brew Works – 6th Anniversary (Facebook Events).

As their description reads:

Join us to celebrate our 6th anniversary! -Friday the 28th we will have Nate Myers
-Saturday the 29th we will have Lil Brother Band
Special Releases include:
-French Toast Dark of the Forest
-Cinnamon Bun Dark of the Forest
-Carrot Cake Dark of the Forest

Boneshire Brew Works – 6th Anniversary (Facebook Events)

They have three event pages for this weekend:

As their event page above announced, they are releasing several beers for this weekend: French Toast Dark of the Forest, Cinnamon Bun Dark of the Forest, Carrot Cake Dark of the Forest, Toasted Marshmallow Dark of the Forest, Apple Pie Sour, and a fan favorite return of Angels on the Sideline.

At last year’s release, they did a series of Shire beers that incorporated some of the above flavors (Cinnamon Bun, French Toast, etc.). You can read the review here:

Looks Like It’ll Be a Fun Event

It truly looks like it’ll be a fun event and I can’t wait. Plus, getting to see the Phillies in a World Series game for the first time since 2009 isn’t a bad thing either! Hopefully we’ll get to see you all out there. I know we’ll be there – (probably not with Leela, but maybe, who knows).

Beer Review: Fall Hippo (Boneshire Brew Works) https://thebeerthrillers.com/2021/11/07/beer-review-fall-hippo-boneshire-brew-works/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=beer-review-fall-hippo-boneshire-brew-works Sun, 07 Nov 2021 22:06:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=8333
Fall Hippo by Boneshire Brew Works

Fall Season

It is certainly that time of year… fall; and you can feel it in the crisp and cool air. And that means this time in the Hippo series, it needs to take a ‘fall’ turn and change, going from blue to red to pink to… fall. While maybe not a color like the others, fall is definitely a feeling, and works well for the series’ evolution.

(Check the links at the end of the review to read our beer reviews of some of the other hippo’s as well as other Boneshire Brew Works links.)

Mug Club

As you can see, my beer in question here is in a mug rather than a normal glass or anything. Sunday (Halloween Day, October 31st), me and a friend stopped in around noon to enjoy their 5th Anniversary ‘Shire’ Pastry Flight (you can read that here: Multiple Beer Reviews – Shire Pastries) and also get to try the new Fall Hippo. And lets just say, we enjoyed all five new beers.

The mug club is such a good deal if your a regular. Most breweries have them, and their typically relatively the same across the breweries with some different perks and add-ons and bonuses. One of my favorite perks is that the mug is 20oz rather than the normal 16oz, so all of your beers you get are 20oz pours rather than 16oz pours. Thats a big perk in my opinion, especially when you go often enough.

(Only downside is taking pictures for the blog, without the clear glass, but the overhead view is still good, and you still get an idea of the beer anyway.)

Beer Review

Fall Hippo by Boneshire Brew Works

Beer: Fall Hippo
Brewery: Boneshire Brew Works
Style: Fruit Beer
ABV: 4.5%
IBU: None
Untappd Description: Next up in our Hippo Series, Fall Hippo. Brewed with Cranberry, Pie Spices, and Lactose. Fall desert in a glass.

Aroma is pretty on point with the description, and is certainly a fall desert in a glass aromatically. You get the cranberry and pie spices right up in those nostril canals when you lean in for a good whiff. Its not quite “pie on the window sill cooling” strong, but the notes are all present and you can smell them.

Appearance is hard to tell from the picture (but you can check Untappd for numerous other pictures here – Untappd: Fall Hippo). But, overall, it has a lovely pinkish, off cranberry coloring to it. Like a lighter, more diffused cranberry, maybe a cranberry mixed with water and other juices or similar. (Note: I am not saying its watered down, just trying to give an apt description of the appearance.)

Taste is lovely for this fine beer. Very enjoyable. This is a completely comfortable, ‘kill a four pack in one sitting’ smooth, easy beer. This is a wonderful all day sipper, you can crush a four pack (or more!) of these, and have no problems. Its not too tart to give you acid reflux or anything, and its not too heavy ABV that it’ll get your head swimming. You get a notable cranberry tartness to it, but its not too much, not too overpowering, or lip-puckering or anything like that. And its not too tart or acidic that it’ll you acid reflux or anything like that either. You can pick up the pie spice notes, that gives it this little extra ‘kick’ to it. There is a slick, smooth, slightly creamy feel and taste to it (feel moreso, taste is subtle) which is from the addition of the lactose (or I might be overreaching and thinking thats what its from). Its a very well balanced beer, nothing is overpowering or too much, everything is pretty much good accordance with each other. The mouthfeel is on point. There’s no slickness or cloying to it. It just tastes nice and smooth and light. Its also easy on the head with the ABV, though the lactose might make it not so easy on stomachs. All in all, this is just a smooth, easy drinking beer, that you could sit around the fire with, or sit around all day watching some football games (or early morning futbol games) and be fine at the end of the day, so thats just a win all around right there.

My Untappd Rating: ****.25

Flight of Shire Stouts at Boneshire Brew Works

5th Anniversary Celebration

This past weekend marked the 5th Anniversary for Boneshire Brew Works. All weekend they had a big ‘bash’ of a celebration, from Friday – October 29th, through Sunday – October 31st. I got to stop out for a lunchtime visit on Sunday, and got to try out the brand new stout series – “Shire Stouts” by Alan (head brewer of Boneshire Brew Works). I also got to try the Caucus Race 10 and the Fall Hippo (shown above in my Mug Club 2021 Mug).

International Stout Day

Today is International Stout Day; so what better day to post my review of this delicious tasty flight of stouts? You can actually read about International Stout Day here – at StoutDay.com: International Stout Day. There’s a lot of information on the site, but here’s a quick blurb from the ‘About’ section:

Erin Peters – aka The Beer Goddess – is the founder of International Stout Day. The global holiday was created by the beer writer in Southern California in 2011. It soon became a worldwide celebration; online, in breweries and bars worldwide.

#StoutDay will be celebrated for the 10th year, on Thursday, November 4, 2021.  Just like wine vineyards tell the story of the people, the weather, the land and its history, beer, too, tells a story of the land, of the people and the brewers. Having a day dedicated to a beer style really has just accelerated the excitement in the craft brew circles as more learn about the intrigue regarding its history and the variety that the craft beer industry has to offer.

Stoutday.com (About International Stout Day)

Also, if you check into any stouts today on Untappd, you’ll even receive a specialty badge for your troubles. (Woohoo…. do we have any badge collectors and hunters who visit the page? I guess they still exist, I dunno.)

The Shire Flight

Ok, lets get into it, but first, a quick word about the flight. This is a new stout series at Boneshire Brew Works. Its not variants of LazaRIS which Alan has done in the past, this is a new stout with various variants of it to start off with. This flight consisted of French Toast, cinnamon bun, hazelnut, and coconut.

Ok, onto the reviews:

French Toast Shire

French Toast Shire

Beer: French Toast Shire
Brewery: Boneshire Brew Works
Style: Stout – Pastry
ABV: 7.8%
IBU: None
Untappd Description: (Blank)

Right off the bat, hit the ground running hard on this one. Huge maple aroma and french toast deliciousness from the first whiff. This smells like a snow day Tuesday morning with mom off work, and your school closed, and mom’s in the kitchen making breakfast.

Appearance is going to be pretty similar with all of the beers in this flight. The head / foam of each beer might look slightly different, but for the most part, each beer has the same appearance. (And given that each is a variant of the other, thats how it should be.) These are standard looking stouts; Razor Ramon hair black, like a black maw, something that Nietzsche would tell you to avoid looking at.

First sip is straight up tasteeeeeeeeeeeeeeey! Its like drinking liquid french toast. Very heavy maple flavors, subtle bread and sugar, lovely backburner of a stout behind it all. Full bodied, there’s a lot to love about this beer. Its a light but tasting heavy stout, nothing disadvantageous about that. Nothing cloying, nothing off flavored, nothing that sticks out as being unnatural or unwanted in the beer. You are getting all the flavors you should want, and all the flavors that are intended in a ‘french toast stout’. This is exactly as it should be. This might be my favorite of the flight (and I’m saying that post – having all of them; not just saying that right at the onset). I will definitely be needing to come back and give this a full mug try and get to really delve deep and enjoy this bad boy.

My Untappd Rating: ****.50
Global Untappd Rating: 4.12 (as of 11.4.21)

Cinnamon Bun Shire

Cinnamon Bun Shire

Beer: Cinnamon Bun Shire
Brewery: Boneshire Brew Works
Style: Stout – Pastry
ABV: 7.8%
IBU: None
Untappd Description: (Blank)

Aroma for this bad boy is very heavy cinnamon. You can smell the cinnamon bun big time on this one. Right out the gate you get a nose of cinnamon followed by some bready and then the stout underlaying it all. This is certainly a very aromatic series of stouts – which they should be and is one of the great thing about stouts, aromatics work so well with them, and you get such a strong array of smells and aromas with them.

Just like the above stout, this looks like the abyss (didn’t Nietzsche warn us about them?), and it definitely stared back. This one had a bit more of a head to it than the French Toast one (a small slim foam crest to it). All in all it looks like a good healthy stout.

This one comes at you strong, fast, and heavy with the first sip. A blast of cinnamon right up front. A bit overpowering it, it wallops you right away. It doesn’t give as much of a bread or bready taste as I was looking for, or even a bit of a glaze / sugary taste that I expected (the bun and glazing of ‘said’ cinnamon bun). Still overall, its certainly a wonderful stout; just a bit overpowering on the cinnamon. So if you don’t mind cinnamon (or even better yet – if you really like cinnamon) then this is definitely up your alley. This isn’t really to take anything away from this stout, its definitely really good, just a bit strong on the cinnamon.

My Untappd Rating: ***.25
Global Untappd Rating: 3.93 (as of 11.4.21)

Hazelnut Shire

Hazelnut Shire

Beer: Hazelnut Shire
Brewery: Boneshire Brew Works
Style: Stout – Pastry
ABV: 7.8%
IBU: None
Untappd Description: (Blank)

Aroma for this smells like a typical stout, with a hazelnut added bonus. This might be the least aromatic of the four, but still very aromatic. That was the fun thing about this flight, you could put all four in front of someone blind, and let them take a whiff, and they could easily tell which was which.

This one looks a lot creamier (and oh yea, its definitely a lot creamier than the others). It has just a shinier, creamier look to the beer, almost as if it were a nitro. It also has a little brown ring of foam head (more tan than pure white) with small little bubbles. Still stout typical – Razor Ramon hair black.

As if with appearance, this is a very creamy beer. A nice smooth, creamy stout. This is one of the chief things about hazelnut in stouts (or hazelnut stouts, or however that should be phrased), it just gives the beer a kind of nice, creamy, near nitro like taste, appearance, and flavor to it. Hazelnut, Coconut (as we will see in the next beer), and chocolate tend to be very popular additions to stouts, and all three flavors tend to stick well with the body of the beer to create a lovely flavorful beer. This is certainly proof of that. This is a nice, tasty, delicious stout, that has the wonderful body feel and taste of a stout, with the nice creaminess of the hazelnut, and hazelnut flavors, and overall just a fantastic beer on par with the other two of this series.

My Untappd Rating: ****.25
Global Untappd Rating: 4.01 (as of 11.4.21)

Coconut Shire

Coconut Shire

Beer: Coconut Shire
Brewery: Boneshire Brew Works
Style: Stout – Pastry
ABV: 7.8%
IBU: None
Untappd Description: (Blank)

Another ‘nut’ stout…. except its not! Oh, coconut, you imposter, you fake out. Like the others, you get a lovely coconut smell right out of the gate on this aromatic stout. Coconut can be a wonderful smell and it always seems to work so well with stouts; I think the heavy body of the stout gives it a great body to add ontop of with the aroma and flavors of coconut. I’m typically not a fan of coconut outside of stout based beers (coconut candies, milk, etc, all taste horrible to me).

Appearance is just as we’ve been describing with the above beers – basically this entire flight. Razor Ramon hair black; the abyss that Nietzsche warned us black; stout black. Jet engine fuel black. Etc. etc. etc.

The last of the flight, and it doesn’t disappoint. (None of the flight did, not a single bad beer in the batch.) The coconut is a bit more subtle in flavor than it is in aroma on this. Out of all four of the flight, this one gives you the better true taste of the base stout underneath the variants. You still get the coconut in it; it’s just a bit more muted and subtle than the variants in the other stouts (especially the cinnamon in the cinnamon bun stout). I like that with this one, letting you get a good strong stout, with the coconut flavor, rather than a strong flavor with a pinch of stout. This all works into a really good stout. Just as with the others, there’s nothing cloying, nothing unnatural, no off flavors or anything bad with this. A wonderful mouth feel, a nice clean stout and coconut taste, and a good finish, no lingering taste or aftertaste, and nothing to detract from the beer itself.

My Untappd Rating: ****.25
Global Untappd Rating: 4.02 (as of 11.4.21)

Overall

Overall this was a downright delicious flight. (The Fall Hippo and Caucus Race 10 I had with them were also very good.) As of last checking Boneshire Brew Work’s (Derry Street location) menu list on Untappd, all of these beers are still on, so if you haven’t had them yet, you can still get in and check them out. (I last checked the menu list last night at around 10PM – 11.3.21 – so things might have changed since.)

I would highly recommend all four, either as a flight to try and taste them all out, or if there’s a particular flavor you really wanna try, grab a pint of it. This was a fun flight and added a great new list of beers for the 5th Anniversary Celebration. Hopefully we’ll see more of the ‘Shire’ Stout series in the future.

Boneshire Brew Works is Celebrating it’s 5th Anniversary https://thebeerthrillers.com/2021/10/24/boneshire-brew-works-is-celebrating-its-5th-anniversary/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=boneshire-brew-works-is-celebrating-its-5th-anniversary Sun, 24 Oct 2021 14:44:37 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=8121
Boneshire Brew Works is celebrating its 5th anniversary all Halloween weekend at their brewery on Derry Street.

Five Years

It’s hard to believe that Boneshire Brew Works is already celebrating their fifth anniversary – it honestly feels like they’ve just opened their brewery on Derry Street in Rutherford, Pennsylvania. It feels like they were just having their soft opening, sitting at the bar chatting with Alan, Alex, and Carson. And then the second day of their soft opening weekend, standing at the wall, because it was so jam packed that there was nowhere else to even stand.

And they’ve certainly come a long way too from that first soft opening day. They’ve added a second brewery – Boneshire at Soma – they’ve introduced numerous flagship favorites (like Green Machine, Testify, their LazaRIS series, the Caucus-Race series, etc.), they’ve changed the inside of their building, added food (pizzas finally!), and even survived and weathered the COVID-19 pandemic.

So its fantastic to see them still growing, still expanding, and getting to celebrate their fifth anniversary. This weekend looks like it’s going to be a blast!

Let the Party Begin!

As per yearly tradition on / around their anniversary time – Boneshire Brew Works throws a weekend party celebrating their anniversary. This year it will be Friday October 29th, 2021 through Sunday October 31st, 2021. What a perfect time to end the party – Halloween Night!

As their Facebook post reads:

Can’t believe it has been 5 years! Help us celebrate the 5 years of shenanigans starting next Friday, October 29th through October 31st. Join us for Mexican LazaRIS release, plus French Toast, Cinnamon Bun, Coconut, and Hazelnut Stouts! Food specials – Cheese Steak Pizza, Reuben Flip, and Mexican LazaRIS Chili!

Boneshire Brew Works – Facebook

Looks like quite the lineup of LazaRIS variants! Mexican LazaRIS, French Toast LazaRIS, Cinnamon Bun LazaRIS, Coconut LazaRIS, and Hazelnut LazaRIS. All sound super fantastic! (Especially – personally – looking forward to the French Toast and Cinnamon Bun ones.)

On top of this, there will be some excellent food options – Cheese Steak Pizza, Reuben Flip, and even Mexican LazaRIS chili!

And of course, this wouldn’t be a party without some live music! On Friday from 6PM to 9PM ‘Lil Brother Band’ will be in the brewery jamming out, and on Saturday from 6PM to 9PM it will be Nate Myers rocking the brewery. Be sure to check out both of them.

Its Always a Great Time

The anniversary celebrations at Boneshire Brew Works is always epic and a great time. So be sure to stop in and check it out. Past years have been amazing just as much, and I know this year’s will be too. There is so many good beer options (not just stouts – lots of other styles like IPAs and Sours as well), as well as food options, great music, and one of the most laid back and fun atmospheres. So be sure to check the party out.

Beer Review: Pigtoberfest (Boneshire Brew Works) https://thebeerthrillers.com/2020/10/30/beer-review-pigtoberfest-boneshire-brew-works/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=beer-review-pigtoberfest-boneshire-brew-works Fri, 30 Oct 2020 20:51:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=4908
Pigtoberfest by Boneshire Brew Works

In honor of Boneshire Brew Works celebrating their fourth anniversary tonight, I’ve decided to wait a day or two to do the final of the streaming session’s beer reviews, and instead put this review up. Also, earlier I threw up a throwback post of our beer review of This is The Way (by Broken Goblet) due to today also being the premier of Season 2 of The Mandalorian, on our Facebook page. Which, do yourself a favor, and watch it. (As soon as you finish reading this review.)

In a year where everything has happened from plagues to fires to Oktoberfest being cancelled in Germany, its great to get to celebrate Boneshire Brew Works turning 4 tonight. And its great to be celebrating it with what looks like a fantastic tap list. (I have four new ones to try out on the tap list I see.) They have, what I will have to do a review of – primarily because Alan (head brewer / co-owner) said he would never make – a smoked pumpkin bear (Gourd Damnit) as well as two new English Curse variants (one with Graham Crackers and one S’mores) – as well as a variant he’s done in the past – English Curse with Hazelnut. As well as several of their regular offerings – English Curse (regular), Tried and True, Devil’s Burden. Also, a new IPA is on the tap list – Slight Miscalculations (Mango). Interested in checking that one out as well. So, definitely a lot of great beers to try, come on out tonight and check them out. They are celebrating their 4th Anniversary all weekend.

At the end of the article, I’ll put up some of the links to our other beer reviews, and some of the news articles about Boneshire Brew Works we’ve done, like their expanding into a second taproom in Harrisburg (soon-ish).

But for now, let’s dive into this brewski.

Pigtoberfest by Boneshire Brew Works

Beer: Pigtoberfest
Brewery: Boneshire Brew Works
Style: Festbier
ABV: 5%
IBU: None
Untappd Description: Behold the finest Festbier this side of the Rhine. Prost!

Its hard to see from the picture because of the mug club mug, but the beer looks every bit of a cross between a marzen and a festbier. Whereas marzens tend to be more amber, festbiers tend to be a bit more on the golden side of the scale. The two styles can slightly start going towards each other (some marzens could be a bit lighter, some festbiers could be a bit darker), but typically, marzens are more amber, and festbiers are more golden. This is a bit of a mixture, it has some slight darker looks to it, but mostly golden. Perhaps the mug is distorting my view of it too, so there could be some of that, it might be lighter than I’m thinking it is, or giving it credit for. There was a slight foamy, creamy head that dispersed relatively quickly.

Aroma is bready, heady, with some spices thrown in. There’s some honey notes to it, but mostly the fall spices and the bready notes come through the most. A bit of brown sugar perhaps to round things off, hard to pinpoint it exactly.

The taste is locked on for festbier. You have your honey, your dough, your fall spices, your malt, your bread, your brown sugar, all to give it the various complexities. The complexities for this work in conjunction with each other, so its great. Sometimes a beer can be too complex or have too many ingredients, and it just doesn’t work. Here, you don’t have too many ingredients, but you do have differences and complexities, and they work together and work well. There is definite notes of honey, dough, spices like cinnamon or nutmeg, brown sugar and the malt for sweetness. There is a breadyness to it from the dough and the malt, the honey and sugar and malt give it some sweetness, and the spices give it a bit of a fun, interesting kick. This is a wonderful and great fall weather beer, and will be great tonight on their anniversary, with the rainy, dreary, damp, wet, cold weather. This will taste just right and warm you up perfectly. Make sure you stop in and try it, along with the other goodies Alan has going at Boneshire Brew Works tonight.

My Untappd Rating: ****
Global Untappd Rating: 3.82 (as of 10.30.20)

Like I said above, this whole weekend Boneshire Brew Works is celebrating their 4th Anniversary of being open. So please, come on out, support local beer and breweries and local hard working families, and drink some delicious beers.

Some Boneshire Brew Works articles:

Maybe I’ll see you out there tonight, I’ll most likely there around 6:30-7PM. Cheers!

Boneshire Brew Works is Expanding into Harrisburg with a Second Tap Room https://thebeerthrillers.com/2020/07/14/boneshire-brew-works-is-expanding-into-harrisburg-with-a-second-tap-room/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=boneshire-brew-works-is-expanding-into-harrisburg-with-a-second-tap-room Tue, 14 Jul 2020 14:48:07 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=3878
Boneshire Brew Works

Boneshire Brew Works is moving into Harrisburg. While always been a part of the Harrisburg beer scene, their physical tap room and brewery has been kind of on the periphery and outskirts of Harrisburg proper. The brewery itself is located on Derry Street next to the 717 Armory and Blue Smoke BBQ food truck, as part of a small outlet mall that includes Marino’s Pizza, Signal 5 Crossfit, and Everest Spice. The address being: Boneshire Brew Works, 7462 Derry St, Harrisburg, PA 17111.

But now, they are moving into the city proper. The city that they’ve helped and worked on so much through events like Harrisburg Beer Week and sip @ soma and 3rd in the Burg, and other great events like brewfests and Beers and Bacon. The city that has loved and embraced Boneshire Brew Works so much, is now fully accepting them into the capital itself.

As reported yesterday – Monday July 13th 2020 – on The Burg’s website, as well as on our Facebook page, and then later on PennLive and with an interview Alan Miller did with Breweries in PA – Boneshire Brew Works will be setting up a taproom on 3rd Street in Harrisburg.

Boneshire Brew Works beer line up. English Curse, Green Machine, Devil’s Burden, Tried and True, and Dark of the Forest.

As quoted from The Burg’s press release on the brewery’s expansion: “On Monday, Harristown Enterprises announced that Boneshire would open a tasting room in the SoMa neighborhood on S. 3rd Street in space that had been the location of Sip@SoMa.

‘We are a small brewery that focuses on providing an opportunity for community gathering, and we think Boneshire and SoMa are a perfect fit,’ said Alan Miller, majority owner of Boneshire, which is based in Swatara Township.

In early 2019, Harristown opened the snug, 25-seat Sip@SoMa in a first-floor storefront as an interim measure until it could attract a brewery to the location. Since then, breweries from around PA have used the 12-tap system to serve their beer on a visiting, rotating basis, often in conjunction with 3rd in the Burg, though the COVID-19 pandemic has put a halt to that undertaking.”

SoMa at night, Harrisburg Life

Harrisburg is a vibrant and large city with a diverse culture and many tourist opportunities and attractions. The capital of Pennsylvania, it sees many people coming from all over to visit annually. Located along the Susquehanna and near towns of Hershey and Hummelstown, it provides a lot of entertainment options for visitors. From museums to the waterfront, from bars to restaurants all over the city, there is much to see, eat, drink, and do in Harrisburg. Harrisburg currently has a few other craft breweries – ZeroDay Brewing and The Millworks are the two largest, but there is also a small craft brewery in the vegan restaurant – The Vegetable Hunter.

The sip @ soma location has been a prime target for craft beer and has been a vital part of the craft beer scene in the Harrisburg area. Sara Bozich, a regular planner, and part of the creation of Harrisburg Beer Week regularly (well, regularly pre-COVID-19) hosted ‘block parties’ there, offering a variety of craft breweries and craft beer – but one staple that typically was well represented at the block parties was Alan Miller’s Boneshire Brew Works.

sip @ soma storefront, photo courtesy of The Burg website.

According to Harristown Enterprises: “Boneshire expects to open its SoMa tasting room in spring 2021. It also will continue operating from its main location on Derry Street outside of Hummelstown.

‘Having a dynamic, local craft brewer like Boneshire take over the space is exactly what we’re looking for in the neighborhood,’ said Brad Jones, Harristown’s president and CEO.”

Alan Miller is very enthusiastic for the growth. As well as he should be. Expansion is the key to much of the craft beer scene. Growing, maintaining quality, growing, maintaining quality, is the key to success. You can look at other local breweries like Troegs Independent Craft Brewing or Tattered Flag Brewery and Distillery, and see how their growth has led to more growth. Troegs Brewing originally started in Harrisburg on Paxtang Street and has since moved to Hershey, just outside of HersheyPark on HersheyPark Road, growing to become one of the largest producers of beer in Pennsylvania (behind Yuengling Brewing and Yards Brewing). Likewise, Tattered Flag Brewery and Distillery has grown to several additional locations – Gettysburg, as well as the old Hershey Biergarten and soon to Lancaster. Growth can be difficult for some breweries, and there is usually a small bit of a ‘adjustment period’. Breweries like Rotunda Brewing Company expanded in recent history from a small little bottle shop and near home-brewery size equipment, to a 7 Barrel System, as well as opening a second brew pub in Hershey. There was a small window of time for them that was an ‘adjustment period’, but after that small blip and bump, they’ve maintained that quality they were known for before hand, and now providing it on a bigger scale, and to more people – which is ultimately the goal of all craft breweries and craft brewers. Alan being no exception to that.

Alan is an extremely smart brewer and knows what he is doing. I, personally, think he will have no difficulty with the adjustment and addition of the new taproom, due to open in Spring 2021. The new tap room won’t be adding any additional brewing size capacity to Boneshire Brew Works, but will be providing a second location to have their beers on tap. This will likely mean a quicker turn-over for their production though, so Alan will probably have to spend more time brewing to meet the demands of two locations as well as wherever else their kegs are shipped, and if they further their market by moving cans into beer distributors.

From The Burg’s press release, Alan had to say: “We love the feel and vibe of the SoMa area in Harrisburg, and we have been involved in the SoMa block party since day one and are excited to have a permanent place in the neighborhood.”

This is certainly an interesting time for brewers, not just in Pennsylvania, but the world over, as the coronavirus – COVID-19 is still working its way through the human population. A difficult time for brewers with a lot of uncertainties. Hemauer Brewing recently opened their doors during the pandemic, and Wolf Brewing Co, has had their opening pushed back a bit due to the pandemic as well. Likewise, Rubber Soul Brewing in Hummelstown which was due to open back in late May / early June, still has yet to open, and is looking to open tentatively late July / early August.

The tap room is typically described as ‘intimate’. Its small, and cozy, relaxed, ‘intimate’, but will feature a vibrant tap list. The seating is only 25, which is rather small, but will work well for Boneshire Brew Works. The current tap system has 12 taps, and will thus be able to cover the full spread of Boneshire Brew Works’ beer menu, as well as possibly other ‘guest taps’ if they so choose to do. (As per their licensing, Boneshire Brew Works can have guest taps for craft beer from any Pennsylvania brewery.)

The map and distance from Boneshire Brew Works brewery to their new taproom location in Harrisburg.

The current location for Boneshire Brew Works (their brewery) is 7462 Derry Street Harrisburg PA. The tap room’s location will be 13 South 3rd Street Harrisburg PA.

Brewery Openings and Expansions:

Definitely excited for the opening of this tap room. It will be great for the residents of Harrisburg, it also shows off the hard work Alan Miller and his co-owners / partners have been putting into Boneshire Brew Works, it will also be great for the craft beer scene in Harrisburg to feature another great craft brewery, and will be great for craft beer enthusiasts in Harrisburg; as well as be great for Boneshire Brew Works. Hopefully soon, in Spring 2021 I will be sitting and having a drink (or two, or three) with some of you at the new Boneshire Brew Works taproom!

Until then – cheers everyone!

Pandemic Pils by Boneshire Brew Works

This beer review originally appeared on LetUsDrinkBeer’s blog, I contribute and write occasionally for them. I wrote the review for them first, and just copying here to my blog so I have a version of it on my blog. Please check them out and give them a read. Great articles on their blog, I highly recommend their stuff! (LetUsDrinkBeer – Pandemic Pils [Boneshire Brew Works].)

Welcome back, and sorry its been a while since I’ve gotten to post here on LetsDrinkBeer’s blog. This is Ben (or B. Kline) from The Beer Thrillers and I’m glad to be back. This whole coronavirus / COVID-19 thing has definitely been hectic for everyone. Here in Pennsylvania, we’ve had a color coded system. Every county started in red, then could move to yellow, and then finally to green. My county, Dauphin county, home to Harrisburg, Hershey, and subsequently breweries like Boneshire Brew Works, Troegs Brewing, Moo-Duck Brewery, The Millworks, ZeroDay Brewing, and Newfangled Brew Works (as well as the soon to open Rubber Soul Brewery in Hummelstown), hit yellow (and will go green on Friday – June 19th). This meant that breweries could do outdoor seating (limited capacity, and following CDC guidelines). In green phase, if they so wish, they can do indoor seating as well.

So, with the beautiful weather, and missing my favorite breweries, I met my buddy out and finally had myself a socially distanced brewery beer. And what better beer to have than Pandemic Pils by Boneshire Brew Works.

Beer: Pandemic Pils
Brewery: Boneshire Brew Works
Style: Pilsner – German
ABV: 5.5%
IBU: (None)
Untappd Description: Traditional German Pilsner! That’s right a beer that tastes like beer. Crisp and refreshing and just in time for the warm weather. Our first official lager…enjoy!

For those not in the know, Boneshire Brew Works is a great little small brewery pretty much right in my backyard. It sits near the end of the outskirts of Harrisburg, almost going into Hummelstown. They are one of my favorite local breweries and I’ve tried my best to support them throughout this crazy situation going on with the pandemic. As per Untappd they are a microbrewery with 139 unique beers and an overall global average rating of 3.82.

I will admit to not being the hugest Pilsner / lager fan, but I did enjoy this. And on a warm, sunny, day, I can definitely enjoy a “crisp boi” (as all the cool kids nowadays would say). I like to look at and review beers based on their styles, not my personal preferences, and I also love trying a wide variety of styles, even ones I’m not a huge huge fan of – spice is the variety of life… or… ….vice versa? Ah heck, who knows….

Appearance is a beautiful crisp, light yellow, lager style coloring. Its see-through, and fully transparent, with nice bubbles, and a small but carbonated foam head. It has the tell-tale fizziness of a carbonated lager, and it has all the characteristics and appeal of a German pilsner. Beautiful beer. (There is just something to be said for a nice, pretty, clear beer.)

Aroma is spot on for a pilsner as well. Light, airy, nothing extreme, no hop aroma, no fruityness, no weird off notes. You get the pilsner malt and the oats. There’s not a whole lot to hide or take note of here; it smells like a well made pilsner, which means it smells like a much better version of a Lite beer (glares at certain macros…. you know who you are…). Quite a few local breweries in PA (Pennsylvania) have well made lagers and pilsners, and I would hold this right up with the rest of them.

Taste is delicious. Its crisp, its golden, its refreshing, its cool, its a beer that tastes like beer. Its exactly as it says it should be. What do you want from a German Pilsner? Because this is exactly it. Great clean crisp pilsner malt and oats, nice mouthfeel, nothing cloying, no off flavors, no esters mucking about, just a perfectly well made beer in exactly its style and guidelines. You could easily hammer back a six pack or even twelve pack of these bad boys on a day watching the Phillies play or mowing the yard, or betting on your daughter’s softball game…. I mean…. watching your daughter’s softball team play….. (……shifty eyes….). This isn’t a heavy beer, nor is it light and watery, and with its 5.5% ABV it doesn’t hit you at all until you’re on beer #3 or #4 or depending on your size and tolerance #5 (6?). I certainly enjoyed this, and can only highly recommend it if your in the Harrisburg area of Pennsylvania. It is currently on draft at Boneshire Brew Works, as well as currently available to go in 4pks and also growler fills. Boneshire Brew Works also just released a new version of their English Curse – this time jazzed up with coffee, so definitely check that out as well if you are in the area. You won’t be disappointed, I promise you that!

My Untappd Rating: ****
Global Untappd Rating: 3.92 (as of 6.13.20)

Thank you all for reading, and sorry its been quite so long. Things have certainly been hectic in my neck of the woods, but its looking like we are starting to come back to some semblance of normal (well, a new normal). My job is starting back up on Friday the 19th, but with so many questions yet to be answered. I hope you all had a very safe and productive time if you were in quarantine or locked down. And as always, I certainly hope you’ve been safe and sound from the virus. If you are ever in the Harrisburg area, look me up, would gladly hangout for a beer or two or three; especially once all this silly nonsense comes to an end.

You can check out my beer blog at – The Beer Thrillers; as well as find us on Facebook and Twitter.

I have been very busy over the lockdown, taking a beer science course and covering it on my blog – Beer Education: The Series. As well as doing beer reviews and covering closings.

So please check us out! Thanks!

Cheers!

Beer Review: Long Tongue Liar (Barrel Aged with Cherries and Brett-Lam) (Boneshire Brew Works) https://thebeerthrillers.com/2020/03/06/beer-review-long-tongue-liar-barrel-aged-with-cherries-and-brett-lam-boneshire-brew-works/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=beer-review-long-tongue-liar-barrel-aged-with-cherries-and-brett-lam-boneshire-brew-works Fri, 06 Mar 2020 15:22:01 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=2495
Long Tongue Liar, by Boneshire Brew Works. A new take on the original Belgian. This was barrel aged in a Chardonnay barrel for 2.5 years with cherries and Brettanomyces Lambicus.

Leap year means leap beer. The best thing about a leap year? Its an extra day to drink! And Boneshire Brew Works provided that with their release of a new Long Tongue Liar. Long Tongue Liar, a beer I’ve mentioned on the blog before, but not reviewed, was quickly one of my favorites from them when first released. Its not released as often as some of the more staples that Boneshire offers (like Green Machine, Testify, etc.) but when it does, I’m quick to order a pint (…or two… or three…. or perhaps even four.)

This version of it though is something special altogether. This was barrel aged, for 2.5 years; aged in a California Chardonnay barrel with Pennsylvania cherries and Brettanomyces Lambicus. It was worth every day this beauty spent penned up and locked in that barrel. This is just a beautiful and wonderful beer.

First, let’s dive into what makes this complex beer tick. Starting off with something people might not know about: Brettanomyces Lambicus. Wyeast has this to say about it: “Brettanomyces lambicus. Profile: This is a wild yeast strain isolated from Belgian lambic beers. It produces a pie cherry-like flavor and sourness along with distinct “Brett” character. A pellicle may form in bottles or casks.” (Wyeast) From Wikipedia: “Brettanomyces is a non-spore forming genus of yeast in the family Saccharomycetaceae, and is often colloquially referred to as “Brett”. The genus name Dekkera is used interchangeably with Brettanomyces, as it describes the teleomorph or spore forming form of the yeast.: (Wikipedia) The quick and the short of it – is that the Brettanomyces lambicus is what gives this beer its tartness, its sourness, what turns it from being a Belgian into something reminiscent of Belgian Lambics such as the famous ones like Cantillon.

This is the heavy duty yeast strains that Mellow Mink works with a lot. If you recall our visit there earlier this year, where we sampled some from the various barrels that were currently aging beer; as well as their Scarlet Sunrise, this is THEE yeast that does all the magic for all of these types of beers.

Obviously, the next big thing to discuss is the California Oak Chardonnay barrel this is aged in. And aged for a WHILE to boot. Two and a half years to be exact. Thats a long time to age, and it imparts a lot of the Chardonnay flavors and tannins. This is where most of the dryness comes from, as well as a bit of the tartness. You also get some of the oak flavors in the beer; as well as the wine like qualities from the Chardonnay. The barrel definitely imparts a lot of nuanced flavors into this beer.

But, ontop of the yeast strain, and the Chardonnay barrel, the cherries give this beer the biggest punch of the tartness. Cherries on their own can have a tartness, but let to sit in a beer, aging in oak, for two and a half years, and you are gonna get a lot of tartness. Some dryness. But also a ton of flavor, and that’s certainly achieved here.

So, now that we discussed some what makes this beer tick; let’s break it down and review it!

Barrel aged Long Tongue Liar at Boneshire Brew Works

Beer: Long Tongue Liar – Barrel Aged with Cherries and Brett-Lam
Style: Belgian Tripel
ABV: 10.5%
IBU: None
Untappd Description: This version of Long Tongue Liar was aged with Pennsylvania Sweet Cherries and with Brettanomyces Lambicus. This strain of Brett intensifies the cherry flavor and sourness and creates a distinct “Brett” character. All of this was done in a California Chardonnay Barrel. Did we mention that this sat patiently for 2.5 years?!

Appearance is dark wine red. Like the barrel this aged in (Chardonnay) it gives off a very vibrant red coloring, both from the barrel as well as all of the cherries that this sat and soaked in with. It has the look and feel of a heavy Belgian. This is definitely a full, heavy bodied beer.

Aroma is strong, powerful, like uncorking a bottle of wine. You get the cherries super powerful, right up front, kicking in the front door and leading the charge, you get the oak of the barrel, you get the Chardonnay wine notes, and then you get the distinctive Belgian (particularly the distinctive original Long Tongue Liar) notes; that particular smell that comes from the yeast strain, the various spices, etc. Its bold, its strong, and its powerful. This just smells damn delicious before even getting to the first sip.

And oh boy, what a first sip that is! I think calling this complex might be a bit of an understatement. There is a lot to unpack with this beautiful beer, and it just rocks you right on that first sip. First off, this is chock full of cherry flavor. Both sweet and tart cherry, but neither more overpowering than the other. Its more sweet cherry but the tartness of the Brett and aging makes it very tart as well. So right out of the gate you got very heavy cherry flavor thats competing in kind of a tug of war between sweet and cherry, then you get rocked with the oakyness of the barrel, which segues right into the Chardonnay flavor. Chardonnay is an interesting wine; like most wines, it gets a lot of its distinctive notes and flavors from the area the grapes are mostly harvested from. This can lend it all kinds of fruit flavors; apple, lemon papaya, mango, and even pineapple. It is also a dry wine, with a medium level of acidity and alcohol (compared to other wines). When stored in barrels, it gets different notes based on what barrels its stored in; oak typically gives it a vanilla and smoothness to it that alleviates some of the acidity. What this imparted to the Long Tongue Liar – (or at least what I took from it or tasted) was some apple, lemon, some of the vanilla smoothness, I also took away a little of the papaya in its buttery smoothness though this could also be part of the vanilla flavors I picked up on. The tartness really shines in this beer, it gives you a very mouth puckering, enjoyable, dry, dense, tartness that really brings out the flavors. There is nothing cloying about this, nothing too sweet. The mouthfeel feels exactly spot on, heavy, nothing is watery, certainly no off flavors and no bad aftertaste. Finally the final notes of tasting are the various Belgian spices: coriander, orange peel, clove, all in minute, subtle, just a hint of each. All combined to leave this as one of the most complex, gorgeous, and well rounded and tasting beers I’ve had in a looooooong looooooong looooooong time.

This article was meant to be posted yesterday, but my time kept getting used up… plus then it got gorgeous out…. so I had a lunchtime beer outside while reading… then I had to run errands… and then before I knew it, it was time for my business meeting with the rep from Visit Hershey & Harrisburg at the new Tattered Flag Distillery Lounge; formerly the Hershey Biergarten. That was a great meeting, scheduled from 5-7, instead hung out with the guy until 8:40 discussing the blog, beer, the local area, various breweries, ways to promote breweries, and things that I can’t discuss here yet on the blog (but soon!). Lots of exciting things planned in the future; not just for myself, but for the local breweries and everyone. So definitely stay tuned for all of that, and we’ll be right on the front line of that.

There is definitely lots of fun things on the horizon here for The Beer Thrillers. So be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and like and subscribe to us here on the blog.

(And before I forget, Boneshire Brew Works still has bottles of this beauty at their brewery on Derry Street, for 22$ a bomber. As of last I have seen, they still had this on tap, but by the time you’re reading this, it might be kicked because they only saved a little for kegging.)

Slainte!
