You know, there’s no shortage of IPAs in the world. From the hazy juice bombs of New England to the palate-wrecking resin bombs of the early West Coast era, we’ve seen the IPA evolve into a hundred sub-styles and “IPA-adjacent” beers. But every once in a while, a brewery takes a classic template, sharpens the edges, and gives you something that makes you remember why you fell in love with hops in the first place.

For me this National IPA Day, that beer is Leaf Seeker IPA from Tröegs Independent Brewing.

I got to try this for the first time at Ffej of July just a few weeks ago, and went out and got me a can of it, it definitely deserved to be drank again!

Beer Review

Leaf Seeker is replacing Hopora in the Troegs Brewing release schedule. Let’s see if it lives up to the replacement and deserves its own spot on the calendar!

First Impressions

Crack open the can, and it’s like you’ve just walked into a Pacific Northwest hop farm mid-harvest — dank pine needles under your nose, sticky citrus oils clinging in the air. The pour is a crystal-clear golden amber, with a lively white head that sticks around just long enough to leave a lace map of your drinking pace. No haze, no murk — this is a beer that wears its West Coast style on its sleeve.

Aroma & Flavor

Leaf Seeker IPA is all about balance without losing the bite. The aroma jumps with bright grapefruit, orange zest, and mango from the Citra and El Dorado hops, grounded by earthy, resinous pine from Chinook and CTZ. The first sip leans crisp and bitter up front — a throwback bitterness that makes your tongue sit up straight — but the bitterness doesn’t bulldoze. The malt backbone, courtesy of Pilsner and Vienna malts, keeps things grounded with a lightly biscuity sweetness that fades into a dry, lingering finish.

It’s 6.4% ABV, but drinks lighter, thanks to a snappy, clean body. That’s dangerous on a warm August afternoon.

Seasonal Vibes

Leaf Seeker is a fall seasonal, but it’s debuting just in time to bridge the gap between late summer patio sipping and crisp autumn evenings. I can already picture drinking this while watching the leaves just start to turn, hoodie on, fire pit crackling. The name isn’t just clever branding — it feels like the kind of beer you’d bring along on a road trip through the Appalachian backroads when the foliage hits peak.

National IPA Day Context

Today is National IPA Day, so I’ve been running through my mental catalog of IPAs I’ve loved over the years — Heady Topper, Pliny, Bell’s Two Hearted, Tröegs’ own Perpetual. Leaf Seeker doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel, but it polishes it until it shines. It’s proof that a clear, bitter, West Coast IPA still has a place in 2025, even in a haze-heavy market.

Final Thoughts

If you’ve been craving a clean, hop-forward, no-nonsense IPA with just enough nuance to keep it modern, Leaf Seeker should be on your radar. On National IPA Day, it feels fitting to celebrate with a beer that respects the roots of the style while still feeling fresh and relevant.

Tröegs Independent Brewing announces the return of 717 Collaboration Beer, a joint endeavor among the Hershey-based brewery and six other popular local breweries.

A collaborative effort between Appalachian Brewing, Boneshire Brew Works, Ever Grain Brewing, Pizza Boy Brewing, Wolf Brewing, Zeroday Brewing, and Troegs Independent Brewing, the beer serves as a reminder of the camaraderie that exists among breweries thanks to the thriving craft beer industry in Central Pennsylvania.

Some of the brightest ideas have been developed among sharing stories and laughs with friends over beer. Whether we’re Central PA natives or transplants, we’ve all come together in the 717 with one common goal – to brew great beer and cultivate great friendships.

The Resurrection of the 717 Collaboration Beer

As you can see from the team up photo above, the beer was created by Troegs Brewing, Appalachian Brewing, Boneshire Brew Works, Ever Grain Brewing, Pizza  Boy Brewing, Wolf Brewing, ZeroDay Brewing, and YAH Brew, created at the ZeroDay Brewing facility. Also in the picture includes various people from other breweries like Hemauer Brewing, YAH Brew, and helpers such as the Harris Family brewers, and more.

Brewed at Zeroday’s brewing facility in Harrisburg, the West Coast-style Pilsner weighs in at 6.3% ABV and highlights Mosaic, Nelson Sauvin, and Solero hops. The beer combines the light, malty and crisp attributes of a pilsner with the hop-forward aroma and dry bitterness of a West Coast-style IPA.

Collaboration brews are always fun. When you put seven breweries in the same place to come up with a recipe, you’re going to generate awesome conversation and ultimately come up with a great beer. It’s proof that beer brings people together, and this collaboration is a reminder of that spirit.

All seven participating breweries will unveil the 717 Collaboration Beer on Thursday, July 17. The limited beer will be available exclusively on tap at each brewery’s tap room.

Tröegs Independent Brewing is excited to unveil its latest seasonal release: Leaf Seeker IPA. This West Coast-style IPA joins their esteemed rotating seasonal lineup, alongside fan favorites like Field Study and Blizzard of Hops.

Leaf Seeker is a nod to the bold, hop-forward beers that defined the early days of the craft beer revolution. No strangers to the style, Tröegs already boasts Pennsylvania’s best-selling craft brand with Perpetual IPA.

West Coast IPAs are experiencing a recent renaissance of sorts, with Leaf Seeker, we wanted to connect the dots between those big, hoppy IPAs from California and Colorado with our own East Coast culture.

– says John Trogner, co-founding brother and brewmaster at Tröegs.

As with many Tröegs brews, the journey of Leaf Seeker began in the hop-rich fields of the Yakima Valley in the Pacific Northwest. Leaf Seeker IPA started off as Scratch 508, then became Scratch 515, all on its way to becoming Leaf Seeker.

We go to the Yakima Valley every year to make sure we get the right hops. To me, it’s the most important ingredient selection we do. We have so many hop-forward beers, so the stakes are high.

This year’s harvest brought an abundance of Citra, Chinook, and El Dorado hops, giving Leaf Seeker IPA its signature notes of sticky citrus, dank pine, and tropical fruit. Complemented by a backbone of pilsner and Vienna malts, this IPA strikes the perfect balance at 6.4% ABV, delivering just the right amount of bitterness to accompany fall’s changing leaves.

Brewing a high‑gravity beer like barleywine is an exciting challenge—it demands more time, ingredients, and patience compared to lighter styles. If you’re brewing all‑grain, be aware that your yield will likely be reduced because of the heavier grain bill.

1. Grain Bill & Specialty Malts

Start with a substantial base malt—lights such as 2‑row barley or Maris Otter—and add specialty malts (e.g., crystal, caramel) to boost flavor and color. You’ll need much more grain than for standard beers.

2. Extract Brewing Alternative

If you prefer extract brewing, supplement your base malt extract with specialty grains for complexity. This simplifies the process while still producing rich malt flavors.

3. Water & Mash

Use a balanced water profile. For American-style barleywine, consider blending reverse-osmosis and tap water. Adding chloride enhances malt smoothness, while some sulfate (100–200 ppm) can help dry out the finish. Aim for a mash temperature around 152–156 °F to retain fermentable sugars but still allow body.

4. Boil & Hops

A long, vigorous boil (90 minutes or more) intensifies caramelization and concentrates the wort. Hops are essential—not only to balance the massive malt bill but also to define whether your wine leans English (more restrained hops) or American (bold, citrusy hops).

5. Yeast & Fermentation

Choose a robust yeast strain capable of achieving high attenuation. Pitch enough yeast and consider a starter to ensure a healthy fermentation. With high gravity, a secondary fermentation is recommended to clear and mature the beer.

6. Conditioning & Aging

Patience is vital. Barleywine usually takes months to mellow and develop. Many brewers age their beer for 3–12 months, monitoring flavor evolution—oak aging and bottle conditioning are popular enhancement methods.

7. Style & Serving

English barleywine tends to be rich, malty, and less hoppy, while American versions emphasize hop bitterness and aroma. Expect ABVs in the range of 8–12%. Serve it in snifter glasses to fully appreciate its depth.

I first had this beer back in October of 2019. (Which feels like ancient history.) And I remember wanting to write a review of it even back then for the site…. and for some reason I never did. Not sure why exactly. Maybe I just didn’t get around to it or something, but I even kept my photo of the beer on my desktop screen this whole time. Ironically, I recently had it again, so what better opportunity to revisit the beer for my second beer review release for Andor: Season 2. Last week I reviewed – Admiral (J Henry Barrel Aged Grand Stout) by Delta Beer Lab – and so this week, we’ll taking a look at a much closer brewery – Rotunda Brewing Company with their Imperial Black IPA (or Imperial Cascadian IPA). This is one of my favorite styles of beer, I love Black IPAs, and Double Black IPAs are event better.

Let’s check out this Wookie beast (not to be confused with the Wookie Monster by Fourscore). Will someone get this Walking Carpet out of my way so I can type!

Appearance

Chewbacca pours a deep, opaque brown-almost bordering on black-with a creamy, tan head that lingers like a loyal Wookiee companion. The lacing is impressive, clinging to the glass with each sip, leaving behind a trail reminiscent of hyperspace streaks.

Aroma

Right out of the gate, there’s a punch of roasted malt-think dark chocolate and fresh-brewed coffee-balanced by a piney, resinous hop profile. There’s a subtle undercurrent of caramel and a hint of citrus, like orange peel, that peeks through as it warms. The aroma is bold and inviting, promising complexity.

Taste

The first sip delivers a satisfying interplay between roasted malt bitterness and assertive hop character. Notes of espresso and bittersweet cocoa dominate up front, quickly joined by pine, grapefruit, and a touch of earthy spice. The Black IPA style shines here: the hops never overwhelm the malt backbone, instead weaving together in a harmonious, chewy mouthfeel. The 9.2% ABV is well-hidden, but there’s a gentle warmth in the finish that lets you know this is a beer worthy of a Wookiee.

Mouthfeel

Medium to full-bodied, with a creamy carbonation that lifts the flavors without feeling heavy. The finish is dry, with lingering roast and a pleasant, resinous bitterness that invites another sip.

Overall Impressions

Chewbacca is a robust, well-executed Black IPA that balances dark roast and hop bite with finesse. It’s a bold tribute to its namesake-complex, powerful, and just a little wild. Whether you’re a Star Wars fan or simply a lover of big, hoppy dark ales, this is a beer that deserves a spot in your cantina. Untappd’s 3.8/5 rating feels right, but I’d nudge it a bit higher for the sheer fun and craftsmanship.

I’m gonna have to check the archives of the site here, or on my computer, to see if I have any notes or anything from the initial first time I drank the beer, if maybe I started a review and then sadly – for whatever reason – never got around to finishing it. Maybe I was waiting for the right chance to post it, and never found it. Who knows, there’s over 70+ articles in my “draft” folder here on the site, some day I’ll get around to posting them…. unfortunately that day is not today though. Beer Review

Pouring this one into the glass, you’re getting a beer that arrives with that classic West Coast IPA confidence. Slightly hazy golden-orange coloring with a white head hanging around like a stubborn houseguest that doesn’t understand you’ve already put your shoes on and turned the lights off.

The aroma immediately announces itself. Pine needles. Resin. Citrus peel. Grapefruit. Dankness.

And I don’t mean “a little bit of dankness.”

I mean the sort of aroma that walks through the front door and says:

“I’m a West Coast IPA. Remember us? We used to run this town.”

The first sip brings a pleasant bitterness right out front. Citrus and grapefruit hit first, followed by pine resin and that old-school hop character that many modern juice bombs seem afraid of. There is a crispness here that keeps everything from becoming heavy or syrupy. It doesn’t apologize for being bitter, and it doesn’t try to hide under six pounds of mango puree and vanilla additions.

This beer feels like it looked at modern trends and simply shrugged.

There’s a clean finish that leaves lingering pine and citrus on the tongue, creating that immediate desire for another sip. Not because it’s trying to overwhelm you with complexity, but because it knows exactly what it’s trying to be.

And sometimes that’s enough.

Actually, more than enough.

Because increasingly I think craft beer gets caught in a strange arms race:

Bigger adjuncts. Bigger pastry stouts. Bigger fruit additions. Bigger ABVs.

Soon someone is going to release an Imperial Triple Barrel Aged Marshmallow Cinnamon Roll Peanut Butter Banana Foster IPA brewed with moon rocks and existential dread.

Meanwhile a beer like How Much for Greenland just quietly raises its hand and says:

“Hey…remember hops?”

And that’s refreshing.

Final Thoughts:

Much like the question itself, How Much for Greenland? starts out sounding ridiculous before becoming oddly enjoyable the longer you sit with it.

Bold, piney, citrus-heavy, pleasantly bitter, and carrying enough old-school West Coast personality to remind you why the style became king in the first place.

Beer Score: 4.1 / 5 cap pops

Would I Drink Another?
Absolutely.

Though unlike Greenland itself, I’d probably be willing to buy this one.

Lakefront’s new Brewers’ Reserve Baltic Porter Aged in Port Barrels releases this Friday, while supplies last, only at the brewery.

The tenth in the series for Lakefront Brewery, their Brewers’ Reserves are packaged in 12 oz. cans and are only available at their Beer Hall. These limited rare beers allow their brewhouse wizards to experiment with niche-barrel-aged styles concocting inspired treats for your enjoyment.

A descendant of the English Porter, Baltic Porters offer a more robust and sweeter flavor profile perfect for some time spent in a port wine barrel. This dark, cocoa-brown, cold-fermented lager, weaves together layers of malt, toffee, and molasses. The port wine barrel-aging adds flavors of oak plank, vanilla, dried fruit, and marzipan. The ideal pairing for your favorite winter comfort meal or that cozy night by the fire.

Lakefront will be releasing this Brewers’ Reserve this Friday, December 20^th just in time for the holidays and any last-minute gifting needs. This liquid gold comes in at a session-able 6.5% and becomes available in their online ordering menu starting at 9am that day, when you can schedule a pickup time over the weekend. The cans will also be available for purchase at their main bar when they open their doors at 11am, while supplies last. Single cans to-go will run you $3 + tax. A 6-pack will cost $15 + tax.
