A map of the Mechanicsburg (and surrounding) Area breweries.

Mechanicsburg Area Breweries

There are a lot of fantastic breweries in the Mechanicsburg area! And with the addition of Sworn Brewing – that list is only growing!

Here is Google Directions to take you from the greater Mechanicsburg area breweries (starting at Ever Grain Brewing Company): Google Maps – Greater Mechanicsburg Area Breweries. These directions will take you from Ever Grain Brewing Company to Mellow Mink Brewery to LoveDraft’s Brew Co to Appalachian Brewing Company (Mechanicsburg) to High Road Taproom to Sworn Brewing to Wolf Brewing to Hemauer Brewing and then ending at Marzoni’s Brick Over Pizza and Brewery and Isaac’s Craft Kitchen and Brewery. Total driving time is 53 minutes (at time of making the map). 16.3 miles of driving total.

Google Map Directions of Breweries in Mechanicsburg (starting with Ever Grain Brewing Company)

Map of Mechanicsburg Area Breweries

The following map shows breweries in the Mechanicsburg area. Breweries with the ‘beer mug’ are located in Mechanicsburg (although Ever Grain is listed as a Camp Hill location, it is just two blocks away from Mellow Mink which has a Mechanicsburg address, and Grateful Goat which is further east than both, also has a Mechanicsburg address – so I have included Ever Grain Brewing in with the Mechanicsburg breweries). Also included are breweries in very near by surrounding (West Shore) areas – such as Enola, Lemoyne, Camp Hill, etc.

The yellow pins are those without a Mechanicsburg address (not including Ever Grain which I placed in with the Mechanicsburg locations) – it also includes the Farmers Market (West Shore Farmers Market) which has a GearHouse Brewing stand.

A late addition to the list is Cold Springs Brewery; which has a Mechanicsburg address despite being south of Shepherdstown. (I was tempted to give this a separate pin color, but decided against it due to having a Mechanicsburg location still, and because it would be the only one of that nature).

How to Use the Map

You can zoom in, and click on each of the beer mugs with the paw prints on them to see the breweries. This will call up their address via Google Maps, as well as any other information they have supplied to Google (phone numbers, websites, etc.). You can also save this map to your Google Maps so when you call up Google Maps these locations will be pinned onto your map as an overlay.

We are working on a massive project here at The Beer Thrillers. We are creating a map of all of the breweries across the United States. State by state we are adding maps of all of the different states with every brewery in each state. (We will eventually get to the US Territories, as well as the Canadian Provinces, and possibly more countries; as well as doing some fun maps like a map of all the breweries we’ve been to, and other fun maps.) You can find the brewery maps here:

We are also working on a project of creating printable and downloadable PDFs and resources to be able to check and keep track of all of the breweries you’ve been to. So stay tuned for that project once we are finished with the Brewery Maps of the US States.

Twofer Brewfer Brewery Reviews: Gearhouse Brewing Co. and Liquid Art Brewing https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/05/17/twofer-brewfer-brewery-reviews-gearhouse-brewing-co-and-liquid-art-brewing/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=twofer-brewfer-brewery-reviews-gearhouse-brewing-co-and-liquid-art-brewing Wed, 17 May 2023 15:36:19 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=11395 Twofer Brewfer

The “Twofer Brewfer” is a new series of articles written by Paul R. Kan and Jacob Sailer. Two friends from Central PA who enjoy going out and trying breweries (both new and old). The premise is pretty straight forward, the two of them visit two breweries and give a brewery review of each. Breaking down its food, beer, atmosphere, service staff, etc.

Their tagline for the series is:

Celebrating the great brewing of the Central PA region, two local beer lovers visit two local breweries and pick a couple of their favorite beers.

Gearhouse Brewing Co.

Gearhouse Brewing Co.

Chambersburg is a town that’s almost three hundred years old, and towns with long histories always hold secrets. The two breweries we visited aren’t exactly secrets, but they are outside of the downtown area in a section of town where trains have historically been sent for repairs and storage. You can almost smell the coal in the air and hear echoes of rumbling locomotives from decades ago. Gearhouse Brewing Company and Liquid Art Brewing Company stand in the shadows of red brick trainyard warehouses erected generations ago. We kicked off at Gearhouse.

Atmosphere and Space

Piano at Gearhouse Brewing

Walking into Gearhouse Brewing Company we immediately felt comfortable. The space has lots of natural light and the warmth of hardwood all around. The interior blends with the brewery’s location; old photos of the area and some cool antique furniture pieces are thoughtfully placed throughout the taproom. In the room near the brewery tanks, there is an old stand-up piano and a sign with some good advice. There is plenty of space throughout the building and a deck area to enjoy cold beer on warm days.

Service and Hospitality

We hit the bar and the bartender came right over. He was engaging and explained the beer and food menus. He also filled us in a little about the history of the area, pointing out what remains Chambersburg’s massive railway roundhouse, situated directly by the brewery. It was Good Friday and he invited us to stay for the free Easter Egg Hunt with prizes. Jacob won a coupon for a free pint in his egg! Meanwhile, Paul got… two pieces of candy.

Food

We both agreed that the appetizers we had were some of the best food we’ve eaten in our twofer brewfer visits. We shared the fried brussel sprouts and the Korean chicken bites. The sprouts were cooked perfectly, which crispy leaves and soft interior, balanced with a tangy sesame ginger dressing. Tossed with golden raisins, crisp garlic, and cashews for a wonderful textural experience and to give brussels just the right amount of sweetness. The Korean chicken had a delightfully airy coating which a satisfying crunch. Complimenting it all was the sauce which perfectly balanced sweet and spicy.

Best Beer

(A Belgian Dubbel and a flight from Gearhouse Brewing.)

It rarely happens, but we both ended up agreeing on the choice for our favorite beer: The Belgian Dubbel at 8.5% ABV. With notes of raisin, orange peel, cardamom and stone fruit, the beer was wonderful. Because the two of us agreed on the Dubbel, each of us decided to pick a runner-up. Paul chose the “Angelic Red”, an Irish red ale with nice caramel notes and hints of citrus. Jacob chose “These Sheep are Making Me Thirsty,” a heller bock at 6.3% ABV with a light, sweet finish.

Liquid Art Brewing

Mural at Liquid Art Brewing

Next up for us was Liquid Art Brewing, which was previously Roy Pitz Brewing. It’s within walking distance of Gearhouse and made for a great second stop. On one side of the building is a massive mural of a phoenix, which is a great symbol for an area of town rising from its past as a rail yard.

Atmosphere and Space

(Interior pictures of Liquid Art Brewing Co.)

Our first impression as we walked in was how large the space is. There are quite a few rooms inside to sit and a couple of bars to sidle up to and grab a seat. Each room also has its own little vibe. We sat in the smaller bar area that felt like a pub.

Service and Hospitality

The bartender came to the table as soon as we sat down. She explained the menu and then gave us a few minutes to look over our options.  She was very friendly and more than willing to chat about the beers on tap.  We also talked about the tasting notes of each beer when we were drinking them.

Food

The menu is filled with pub-style favorites prepared with care. Paul had a good-sized serving of the fish and chips, beer battered with Liquid Art’s Best Blonde and served with their house made remolade. Jacob eagerly devoured Bavarian ham sandwich, pit smoked ham sliced thin and stacked high on a pretzel roll with their IPA mustard.

Best Beer

A flight from Liquid Art Brewing Co. (formerly Roy – Pitz Brewing)

Paul’s favorite beer was the Irish Red! (are you sensing a pattern to his tastes?) With some light toffee notes and a clean, bitter finish, it was a standout. With a color that was a nice, dark ruby red, it fit right with the pub atmosphere. Jacob liked the Honeysucker IPA which had a light honey taste and clean, easy drinking body. A real surprising stand out was their craft root beer. After learning it was made in house Jacob couldn’t resist ordering it, drinking two full mugs by the end! For a non-alcoholic option, it was a real winner.

Wrap Up

If you’re looking to uncover some secrets of the past and do some beer drinking, head out to these two Chambersburg breweries!

Thank You For Reading

Ok, Ben jumping on here. I want to give a big thanks to Paul R. Kan and Jacob Sailer for the article. Paul messaged me and e – mailed me the article on Monday, but unfortunately we had a really busy day and I wasn’t home to get it up right away. Amy got her drain pulled Monday morning, and I had a job interview Monday evening, and then we had errands in the Carlisle area.

Yesterday, I had a few errands, and had to vote. I had a horrible head cold all day yesterday, I think from the Hummelstown Hunger Run 5K that was in the rain on Saturday. So with watching Scarlet and everything, I was pretty wiped out.

So I apologize for the lateness on getting this article up.

This was also gonna go up about an hour or so earlier today, but had a furnace guy at the house, so been a bit busy with that as well.

Anyway, moving on, once again, thanks to Paul and Jacob for the article. Hope you all enjoy. Cheers!

Chambersburg Breweries Back Up the LGBTQ+ Community https://thebeerthrillers.com/2022/01/28/chambersburg-breweries-back-up-the-lgbtq-community/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=chambersburg-breweries-back-up-the-lgbtq-community Fri, 28 Jan 2022 14:15:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=8641

Chambersburg Breweries Showing Their Support

Yesterday, the three breweries of Chambersburg PA showed their support and pride as they got behind the LGBTQ+ community, each making a Facebook (and other social media) statement. This is in response to the recent borough council vote about equal rights.

At the recent borough council for the Chambersburg Borough, the council voted 7 to 3 to repeal an anti-discrimination ordinance that has been in place.

ABC27 News has covered the story and provides some insight here:

Chambersburg Borough council voted 7-3 Monday night to repeal an anti-discrimination ordinance protecting members of the LGBTQ community.

According to the Pennsylvania Youth Congress, at least 71 of Pennsylvania’s 2,562 municipalities have passed LGBTQ-inclusive local nondiscrimination ordinances as of January 2022. Chambersburg becomes the first to repeal one.

Out of about 60 people who spoke, only five or six were in favor of repealing the ordinance.

The ordinance was passed by a strong Democratic majority in the fall of 2021 but the council now has a Republican majority and council President Allen Coffman said repealing the anti-discrimination ordinance is what voters elected them to do.

Many people, including several members of the LGBTQ community, spoke passionately during the public comment period lasting several hours.

“We were all brought into this world with the same inalienable rights. So I think by creating special protections for people, we open the door for other special protections for other people,” said councilman Bill Everly. “I’ve been doing some work with the LGB, looking at this and out in California, they’re also trying to attach other quote alphabet letters to the LGBTQ people. So if we pass this ordinance, I mean, we don’t repeal this ordinance, who’s to say another special interest group will come forward.”

“I’ll talk about something that I’ve been discriminated in my life. I was a man that was 100 pounds heavier than I currently am and I was discriminated in my life,” Everly said. “However I have not taken that platform to carve out a special exemption for me and others such as myself. And I think it’s important that we as a community come together and not divide us even more and I think this divides us a little bit.”

In lieu of the ordinance, Mayor Kenneth Hock signed a proclamation condemning all forms of bigotry, discrimination and oppression against all individuals.

ABC 27 News: Chambersburg Borough Council Votes To Repeal LGBTQ Anti-Discrimination Ordinance

Each of the breweries yesterday turned to their social media accounts to state their stances on the issue. All in favor of the ordinance and against the appeal. All against hatred and in diversity, and solidarity, and helping the community.

Gearhouse Brewing Statement

Gearhouse Brewing Company’s Social Media Post

The elephant in the room, when myself and the other co-founders of GearHouse Brewing Co started out some odd six years ago now we always came back to one thing, creating a community gathering place where everyone was welcome. The actions of the Chambersburg Town Council do NOT reflect the values we live by and run our business. As someone who was born in Chambersburg, graduated CASHS, and chose to start a business here I am profoundly saddened by the current reputation of our town. We will be taking action to support local non-profits that champion the diverse citizens in our community. Van Gray

GearHouse Brewing also announced the release of “Be Proud” with a portion of the proceeds being donated to Pride Franklin County.

TBC Brewing Company’s Statement

TBC Brewing Company’s Facebook Statement

So many of our local friends and colleagues have already expressed their outrage over the Chambersburg Borough Council’s recent unprecendented actions with such fiery eloquence. We share in their anger and also in their commitment to serving all members of this diverse community, but rather than run the risk of being passionately redundant, we’re just gonna leave this here….

Roy-Pitz Brewing Company’s Statement

Roy Pitz Brewing’s Statement

When we started Roy-Pitz nearly 14 years ago in our hometown of Chambersburg, we built the company’s mission first and foremost around sharing a philosophy of a passionate fulfilling life. For us, this meant building an experience and business that was inclusive of all and celebrated the unique individuals who were our customers, employees and partners in the communities we are a part of. Recently, the Town Council of Chambersburg voted 7-3 on an action that we believe is not aligned with that mission. We want to be clear that is town consists of an amazing collection of unique and amazing individuals, businesses and ideas and Roy-Pitz plans to continue to stand with and welcome all of them.

BUT….

Instead of filling out NCAA or college basketball brackets, we are doing our own take on it – The Battle of the Breweries (2021)!

The Battle of the Breweries (2021)

So how’s this going to work? Who all is invited? What all breweries are going to be in it? How many breweries? How’s voting going to work? Who decides whose in and whose out? Whats the seeding? Why is Rick such a jerk to Morty? Why is Jurassic Bark the saddest episode of Futurama ever? Why is it also B. Kline’s favorite episode? What does that say about him? Why is the sky blue?

Ok…. enough with the questions!

The procedure for this ‘tournament’ will be similar to most other March Madness style tournaments. Similar to the ones you’ve seen Untappd and Breweries in PA have done, but with a bit of a twist. Because we here at The Beer Thrillers have a terrible time making full fledged decisions, the list of competitors will be 48 instead of the normal 32.

How did I decide what breweries will be involved? Simple. Only breweries that I have physically visited in person. The voting is based on the brewery and their beers; but to be included on this list, I personally had to have been to one of their locations.

How is seeding decided? Thats also pretty simple, the seeding is based on global average Untappd ratings. So the decision of the seeding is out of my hands. Also, bonus, you can’t get mad at me for the seeding. “Why is X above Y? Why is Z below D?” Its all decided by Untappd.

So whats the tournament structure? One total grouping of 48 breweries (in lieu of teams), divided by two conferences of 24 each, which is divided further into a total of four divisions of 12 each. So break down is simple: 4 divisions of 12 each, with two divisions per conference, of 24 teams in each, for a total of 48 competitors / teams / breweries.

How did we decide on who is in what division? Simple – random number generator. I rolled the dice (a D4 to be exact, thank you to my old nerdy DnD days, I just ‘happened’ to have one of these lying about). Rolled the dice for each brewery to locate them into a division. If one division was understaffed and another overstaffed, I re-rolled until they were evened out.

Let’s Meet Our Competitors

So who all do we have facing off in this crazy free for all of brewing expertise? Quite an assembly of breweries actually. There are a heavy abundance of local (Central PA local) breweries but there is an assortment of breweries from my various travels and across a few states. We have a few breweries from the Rochester area of New York; some breweries from Maryland, a Delaware brewery, some from Ohio, one from Indiana, and one from Kentucky as well.

Surprisingly; it actually took a while to curate the list. At even 48 entries, I still had many more to include, and even removed a few to make it a bit more diverse. I wanted to try and make this as diverse as possible (so removed a local brewery for one out of state, etc.). Possibly in the future, maybe the 2022 iteration of this, or the 2023, who knows, it’ll expand to even more breweries.

This has taken up pretty much my entire night to create the list, and to roll the dice for their divisions, and then checking their Untappd scores to get them into the correct seedings. In the case of matching Untappd scores, I did make my own decision, and that was primarily based on my thoughts of their size, notoriety, branding; so there is a few judgment calls due to a few ties, but there isn’t too many of them.

Conferences and division names…. I had to decide on what to pick. I was going to go by hop names, but I saw at last second, that the Breweries in PA have done that this year, instead of their normal divisions based on geography, it appears they decided to use hop names for their divisions, so thats out. I debated doing Jedi and Sith for the conferences and then doing different Jedi or Sith Masters for the division names…. but… instead decided to go with WWF/E names due to WrestleMania 37 approaching.

So I present you two conferences. One is based on HEELs and one is based on FACEs. The names of the breweries are listed in the order of their seedings, and will have their location and their Untappd (global average) rating behind their names.

Alright, that’s all 48 competitors. Tomorrow the brackets will be published and you will be allowed to vote on the first round matchups. Here’s where things get a bit screwy…. mainly because I don’t do math so good (sigh, sad subject, really, since I work at a job where I do math all day). Well, what really happened, is that I didn’t think through the breakdown. 32 breaks down easily for each round…. 48…. not so much. So…..

Week one will be divisions with 6 matches in each divisions. After that, the divisions will break for week two, and it will be by conference, with 6 matches in each conference. After this, we break apart the conferences, and do another 6 matches. This leaves us with 3 final competitors, for a triple threat for the ending.

So…. I kinda sorta walked myself into a corner…. and kinda… sorta…. walked my way out of it. Glad I chose to use wrestler themed people, so that the finale “Triple Threat” makes more sense.

*Smacks head* D’oh!

But anyway, there will be 7 days of voting for each round. With the final round taking the remainder of the month and ending on the 31st.

Voting

Each day you will be able to come to the site to make your votes in the polls. It will be set-up by IPS, so it limits you to voting just once per day per vote. You can vote as many times as you want per round, but only once per day.

Following each round, I will update the brackets and post them and make up the new polls for voting. Round one begins on March 1st, 2021 and will last until March 7th at Midnight, when it will then become the next round.

I suggest helping your breweries out and sharing the poll pages so that as many of your friends and brewery lovers can vote as well. Good luck to all of the competitors… err… breweries!

Cucumber Falls at Ohiopyl State Park

Started the day waking up in Morgantown West Virginia to the full cacophony of noises one can only hear at an Econo Lodge at 5AM. After getting situated, getting gas, mountain dew for the drive, basic necessities, I made the hour and a half trek to Ohiopyl Pennsylvania. There I made landfall in the state park at 10:30AM.

I started at the parking lot by the Cucumber Falls (pictured above) and took the long yellow trail. It was about 6 miles out and back to get to Flatrock and then Cascade Falls. (I’ll post pictures of them in the full recap.) This was a more difficult hiking trail than some I’ve done on the trip. The Meadow Run rapids and the Cascade Falls were equally beautiful.

There was a few other things to do in Ohiopyl, but since this was my last day, and by 3PM (the time I finished the hike), I figured it would be best to head home. It was roughly a 2.5-3 hour drive home, so I wanted to get moving. If I took the turnpike (and selected tolls) on my Google phone GPS maps whatever, it was going to be 2 hours and 15 some minutes (plus stops). If I did no tolls, it had me drop into Maryland just below the Mason-Dixon line and then come back up and be 3 hours and 34 minutes. Or something like that (don’t quote me on it exactly, I didn’t write it down).

But, I didn’t take either of these routes. I wanted to at least try a brewery in the area, since I most likely won’t be in this area again. So the closest, most local brewery, was Whitehorse Brewing LLC in Berlin. So off I went. Forty minute or so drive there.

Whitehorse Brewing LLC

I was a bit surprised by this place, because it looked like a typical development / suburban house and garage. (And I’m pretty sure it was, just converted into a brewery.) Inside was the brewer and a bartender and they were extremely nice, generous, and talkative about the area. I got an Apple Butter Cream Ale and enjoyed it outside by the fire before moving on.

Instead of driving for 2-2.5 hours straight home, I decided to break it up and hit another Pennsylvania brewery I hadn’t been to yet….

Gearhouse Brewing

Gearhouse Brewing in Chambersburg. I’ve heard nothing but good things, and know the brewers and many people who frequent it, unfortunately, getting down to Chambersburg hasn’t been in the cards until now. So I stopped there, had a flight, a delicious hamburger, and then it was ontowards home.

Sort of.

Earlier in the day my friend Drew texted me saying if I was home by 5 he’d be at Rubber Soul; well that didn’t work out, but my mom had wanted to go to Rubber Soul to try their Italian Wedding Soup (as did I; being a huge huge huge fan of Italian Wedding Soups), so I drove to my parents place, and we walked over to Rubber Soul for dinner.

Rubber Soul flight

And while I was gone, they had released four new beers I hadn’t had yet, so I got a flight of the beers I’ve missed (enjoyed all of them by the way, especially the blueberry pomegranate IPA and the sticky stout). Showed mom the pictures of my trip, the museums, the waterfalls, etc. Discussed how her grandmum (pure 100% Italian) made wedding soup, and my mom even went so far as to say this was her favorite Italian Wedding Soup she’s had not made by her family. Which for her would be extremely high praise.

Finally got home, and got to be reunited with my dog who I hadn’t seen since Sunday morning when I left. My ex-wife took good care of her, but she was still so super eager to greet me and take another walk that she basically pulled me the entire way.

Leela at home

The above picture doesn’t do justice to how excited she was to see me, and I have to say the feeling was very mutual. I sure missed my pup.

After taking her for a long walk, came home to see that I had a beer mail package from a buddy out in Bristol PA.

Beer Mail

We did a trade 2 cans for 2, and he threw in the extra – 12 oz can of Dulachan by Lavery – for me to review for the blog, free of charge. Thanks Steve! So be on the lookout for all three of these being reviewed soon.

Well, it is 11:30, and I am exhausted and its been a long seven day trip and I can finally rest and sleep in my own bed, so that is exactly what I am going to do.

Goodnight everyone and cheers, and thanks for following along on the trip!
