Snitz Creek Brewing is Coming to the Old Mt. Gretna Craft Brewery https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/11/26/snitz-creek-brewing-is-coming-to-the-old-mt-gretna-craft-brewery/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=snitz-creek-brewing-is-coming-to-the-old-mt-gretna-craft-brewery Sun, 26 Nov 2023 19:23:37 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=14607 For a second go at things – Snitz Creek Brewing Company is coming back to Palmyra. They are taking over the old Mt. Gretna Craft Brewery located at 2701 Horseshoe Pike in Palmyra, PA. (At the corner of routes 322 and 117.)

Originally, Snitz Creek Brewing Company had a location (their second at the time) in the sports complex area off of Reigle Airport. Where ‘In The Net’, Klick Lewis Arena, and Paramount Gymnastics is located. This location ended up closing up in the end of 2018.

We first announced rumors of the possibility of Snitz Creek Brewing Company taking over the former Mt. Gretna Craft Brewery location in August. (See: Rumor Mill: Snitz Creek Brewing To Take Over Mt. Gretna Brewing’s Old Location.)

Mt. Gretna Craft Brewery Closing

The vacant Mt. Gretna Craft Brewery in Palmyra, PA

Earlier this year – on February 16th, 2023 – Mt. Gretna Craft Brewery announced their closing. (See article: Mount Gretna Craft Brewery in Palmyra Announces Closing.)

The announcement came as a bit of a surprise and suddenly when they made their announcement on the 16th (of February). You can read the above article for more information on their closing.

Since then, the brewery has stayed closed and unused. Until now when Snitz Creek Brewing Company will be re-opening it.

Funck’s Restaurants Buys Snitz Creek Brewing

In 2020 Funck’s Restaurants, at the time owner of the Funck’s Restaurant in Palmyra PA, as well as a restaurant in Leyola PA, and a gas station / restaurant at the corner of Fort Indiantown Gap; purchased Snitz Creek Brewing Company. The buy went through just before COVID – 19 with some news articles listing March 13th, March 15th, and even March 17th as the sales date.

They turned the Fort Indiantown Gap Funck’s location into a Snitz Creek Brewery and Restaurant. No brewing was done at the facility – all brewing still remains done at the current Lebanon location. But the restaurant took on the identity of Snitz Creek Brewing Company rather than Funck’s.

Since then Funck’s has gone on to buy several more restaurants and locations. Including TJ Rockwell’s, The Rising Sun in Palmyra, Quentin Tavern, and the Parkside Hotel in Hershey. (See Lebanon Daily News article on the Funck’s Family: The Funck family built an empire of 11 restaurants: The inside story of how they did it.)

This marks their 12th establishment.

Their 12th establishment, which he aims to open in the fall, will be a third Snitz Creek at the site of the former Mt. Gretna Craft Brewery. Snitz Creek beer will be brewed at both once it opens, allowing for them to brew beyond their current capacity, already around their limit.

The Funck family built an empire of 11 restaurants: The inside story of how they did it

Snitz Creek Brewing Company

This will now be their 3rd (current) location. They will have their original brewery located in Lebanon, PA; as well as the Fort Indiantown Gap / Annville location, and the Palmyra location will mark their third.

As the article above suggests – they will be using the former Mt. Gretna Brewery location to brew at as well. Which would make sense with all the equipment left behind by the former brewery occupants; as well as all of the restaurants owned by Funck’s that will need beer to sell (they are also able to sell other beer, having full restaurant licenses).

For More Information on Snitz Creek Brewing Company

For more information on Snitz Creek Brewing Company – the following comes from Untappd. Snitz Creek Brewing Company is a micro brewery from Lebanon, PA. They have 712 unique beers and over 65,000 ratings with a global average rating of 3.7 (as of 11.26.23). Their Untappd description reads: Snitz Creek Brewery was founded and built on the belief that we all can share the peace, satisfaction, thrill and contentment of outdoor pursuits like fly fishing, therefore we felt it appropriate to follow the outdoor theme in the naming of our beers, such as Opening Day, Woolly Bugger, Linebreaker and Explorer. Bringing a brewery to Lebanon was a deliberate and strategic choice. We are passionate about fostering a culture of craft beer and a love of the outdoors to the town we call home. We are proud to be the first brewery in Lebanon County in over 50 years.

Pittsburgh Named Drunkest City in Pennsylvania https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/11/25/pittsburgh-named-drunkest-city-in-pennsylvania/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=pittsburgh-named-drunkest-city-in-pennsylvania Sat, 25 Nov 2023 19:34:13 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=14609 Here’s something to hang your hat on Pittsburgh! Wake up the grandkids, shake them away if you have to, and shout it from the rooftops — Pittsburgh has been named the drunkest city in Pennsylvania!

24/7WallSt, which is a financial news and opinion company, analyzed the percentage of men and women over the age of 18, who self reported heavy, binge, or what is considered by doctor’s “above average drinking” in the state’s different metropolitan areas. Their report then singled out the metropolitan area with the highest rate and used this to determine the “drunkest city” in the state.

(See our article: Exploring the Thriving Pittsburgh Craft Beer Scene)

The report states that 23% of adults (18+) in Pittsburgh self reported that they drink above excess (meaning above average, binge drinking, daily drinking throughout the week, or above a doctor’s recommendation). Statewide, the average was 20.7% and this made Pennsylvania the 10th highest in the nation.

The greater Pittsburgh metropolitan area consists of 2.3 Million people.

As of early 2023, the Greater Pittsburgh area had the largest concentration of breweries in Pennsylvania (Allegheny County clocking in at 56 breweries in total within the county lines).

You can read the full report here: America’s Drunkest States: See Where Your State Ranks

Dark Side to the Stats

There is a dark side to these stats however. In Pennsylvania, deaths involving driving and alcohol are 25.4%; but in Pittsburgh they are 28.4%. There is clearly some level of correlation between these two statistics sadly enough.

As always – we urge and hope all of our readers drink responsibly and conservatively, and safely.

A Few Other Pittsburgh Related Articles

A Series of Craft Beer Articles

This is just one of several in a series of over arching ‘craft beer’ related articles. Several alone in a ‘flagship’ series. In the next few weeks there will be some more that come out as well. I would like to have this general level of different ‘craft beer articles’ that everyone can kind of jump to and read and use for informative purposes, and give a better understanding for the other articles on the site.

Just announced – Smuttynose Brewing Company and Five Boroughs Brewing Company are joining forces under the ownership of Finestking Brewing LLC.

In a year of mergers, acquisitions, changes, and growth (as well as much decline) in the craft beer industry – here comes yet another merger / acquisition.

Brooklyn – based craft brewery Five Boroughs Brewing Co. has been acquired by Smuttynose Brewing Company

The Brooklyn – based craft brewery Five Boroughs Brewing Co. has been acquired by Smuttynose Brewing Co., the first brewery in New Hampshire.

The acquisition, announced on November 7, 2023 (yesterday), provides Finestkind Brewing LLC, the owner of Smuttynose, with access to resources in the New York market and an expanded presence in the tri-state area. Over the next few months, Five Boroughs’ production will transition to Finestkind Brewing’s facility in Hampton, New Hampshire.

We’re thrilled to partner with Smuttynose Brewing Co.

Smuttynose is a craft beer pioneer, and we share their commitment to high-quality craft beers. Under their leadership, we’re confident in the brand’s continued growth, reaching even more craft beer consumers across the tri-state area and beyond.

Blake Tomnitz – Co Founder and CEO of Five Boroughs Brewing

The Five Boroughs Brewing Company’s taproom in Sunset Park (Brooklyn, NY) will continue to operate. It will stay home to the innovation lab and will be used to try out new beer styles, new beers, and all around be a R & D facility (research and development).

They will be doing small batches for select accounts, as well as innovation, research, and supporting new projects.

We remain dedicated to our Sunset Park taproom’s role as a hub for creativity and experimentationIt serves as a space for pushing craft beer boundaries while celebrating the community that has shaped the brand.

Kevin O’Donnell – Co Founder and COO of Five Boroughs Brewing Company

The acquisition represents a new chapter for Finestkind Brewing LLC as it explores potential expansion into new beverage categories, including non-alcoholic options. Five Boroughs will join Smuttynose Brewing Company and Island District Cocktails as one of Finestkind’s core beverage brands. Smuttynose Brewing Company is committed to ongoing portfolio development and establishing a new beverage platform, with a focus on geographical diversification and a warm welcome to like-minded brands eager to join its expanded portfolio.

All around this looks like a good acquisition that will help all brands and companies involved. As the craft beer industry begins to downsize and slim down, narrowing itself and winnowing away some of the excess its gained over the booming years, there will be more and more of these kinds of acquisitions.

We’ve closely monitored Five Boroughs from a distance for some time nowWe admire their remarkable achievements in the competitive craft beer space. Through discussions with Blake, Kevin, and Kian, we are convinced of their integrity and passion for the brand, making this partnership fruitful.

Steve Kierstead – CEO of Finestking Brewing LLC

We are incredibly proud of the foundation laid by the entire team here at Five Boroughs over the last six years. Each team member, past and present, has contributed to the success of the company and collectively propelled us to where we are todayI am fully confident that Finestkind will be great stewards, leveraging resources and economies of scale, to ensure the continued growth and future of what the team here has built

Kian Oveissi – Co Founder and CFO of Five Boroughs Brewing Company

Craft Brews and Cascades: Exploring Cobblehaus at the Falls https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/08/29/craft-brews-and-cascades-exploring-cobblehaus-at-the-falls/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=craft-brews-and-cascades-exploring-cobblehaus-at-the-falls Wed, 30 Aug 2023 02:07:23 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=15207 Craft Brews and Cascades: Exploring Cobblehaus at the Falls

Cobblehaus Brewing Company’s Cobblehaus at the Falls Taproom

Cobblehaus Brewing Company – located at 1015 Leesburg Station Road, Mercer, PA 16137 is one of the most unique breweries in Pennsylvania.

Cobblehaus Brewery, known for its dedication to craft beer, has established a strong presence in Pennsylvania. With its original location in Allegheny County, the brewery has gained a reputation for offering a diverse range of beer styles that cater to various palates. Their commitment to quality and innovation makes them a favorite among craft beer enthusiasts.

Cobblehaus at the Falls, their second location in Mercer County, offers a unique experience by combining the beauty of nature with the enjoyment of craft beer. The taproom, set in a converted jewelry store, sits on a bluff overlooking Springfield Falls, a picturesque 20-foot waterfall. This location not only provides stunning views but also creates a serene atmosphere, perfect for relaxing with a drink.

The taproom’s interior resembles a cozy woodland lodge, featuring large windows that frame the waterfall. Guests can choose from a variety of beers on draft, each brewed with the same care and attention to detail as those at the original location. With its scenic surroundings and inviting atmosphere, Cobblehaus at the Falls offers an unforgettable experience for visitors seeking both adventure and relaxation.

Waterfalls and Beer with Cobblehaus at the Falls Taproom

During my travels around Pennsylvania, two of my favorite activities are visiting craft breweries and exploring waterfalls. When I discovered Cobblehaus at the Falls in Mercer County, combining both passions, I was thrilled. This unique spot offers the perfect blend of nature and craft beer, making it an exceptional destination for any enthusiast.

Cobblehaus at the Falls is the second location for Cobblehaus Brewing, originally established in Allegheny County, about an hour south. The building, which was once a jewelry store, has been beautifully transformed into a taproom just three miles from the bustling Grove City Outlets. This strategic location attracts both locals and tourists, eager to enjoy a refreshing beer after a day of shopping or outdoor adventures.

Perched on a bluff, the taproom overlooks Springfield Falls (also known as Leesburg Falls), a stunning 20-foot waterfall. Access to the opposite bank of Wolf Creek has always been available through State Game Lands 284, but reaching the base of the falls was a challenge meant for the most adventurous. With Cobblehaus at the Falls now open, this beautiful location is much more accessible, providing a serene setting for visitors to unwind with a local craft beer.

The taproom’s interior resembles a cozy woodland lodge, featuring ample seating and large windows that frame picturesque views of the waterfall, partially obscured by trees. Display cabinets, which nod to the building’s past as a jewelry store, double as tables and showcase unique jewelry for sale, adding a touch of local charm to the ambiance.

With about a dozen beers on draft, Cobblehaus at the Falls caters to a wide range of tastes. During my visit, the Bushy Fruited Wheat Sour and Blood Orange IPA stood out as particularly enjoyable. While the beer itself might not be the most exceptional I’ve tasted, the location and the beer garden at the waterfall’s base make it worth returning for the experience alone.

The Iron Furnace Up on the Hill (photo courtesy of Cobblehaus Brewery’s social media)

A short, somewhat steep gravel path leads from the taproom to the base of the waterfall. Along the way, you’ll pass through several wooded seating areas offering views of the creek. At the bottom, an open area with picnic tables, Adirondack chairs, and cornhole boards provides exceptional views of Springfield Falls. The ruins of an old iron furnace, complete with a fire pit, add to the charm and history of the location.

Enjoying a beer at the base of the waterfall is truly one of the best experiences in Pennsylvania. Having visited nearly 200 craft breweries across the state, I am convinced this is the best outdoor beer garden, combining natural beauty with a relaxed atmosphere.

The only downside is the uphill walk back to get another round or use the restroom, but this minor inconvenience is a small price to pay for such a remarkable setting. Overall, while Cobblehaus at the Falls may not be my top choice for beer in the Pittsburgh area, its stunning location and unique ambiance make it a must-visit destination. I know I’ll be back.

Cobblehaus at the Falls is located at 1015 Leesburg Station Road, Mercer, PA 16137. Whether you’re a craft beer lover, a nature enthusiast, or both, this destination offers a refreshing escape into the beauty of Pennsylvania.
