Yuengling and Keep America Beautiful Announce 2024 Partnership, including a $50,000 Donation for Sustainability Initiatives and Special Events to Support Regional Beautification.

Yuengling and Keep America Beautiful Announce 2024 Partnership

On the first day of spring, and as mindsets shift to seasonal cleaning and neighborhood beautification, D.G. Yuengling & Son, Inc. today announced a new 2024 partnership with Keep America Beautiful® (KAB), the largest community improvement nonprofit organization in the United States.

As part of a 2024 campaign, Yuengling will donate $50,000 and support the “Great American Cleanup®” that annually unifies and beautifies communities across the country, in a grassroots spring-cleaning movement.

“As the Oldest Brewery in America, we have embraced the importance of clean water and neighborhood beautification for 195 years,” said Debbie Yuengling, 6th generation family member of D.G. Yuengling & Son, Inc. “By organizing clean up events and through awareness campaigns at bars, restaurants and retail accounts, we look forward to bringing together all those who seek greener and cleaner communities.”

The Great American Cleanup is a nationwide effort spanning three months from March to May. During this time, more than three million volunteers come together to help remove litter from neighborhoods, waterways and other areas requiring trash removal.

This spring, Yuengling team members will participate in KAB state and local affiliate beatification events in Texas, Missouri, Florida and Pennsylvania.

“We’re aiming to pick up more than 10 million pieces of litter during the 2024 Great American Cleanup and great partners like Yuengling are helping to make that possible,” said Jennifer Lawson, President and CEO of Keep America Beautiful. “With their support, we’ll continue to advance our mission of cleaning and greening America while raising awareness about the impact of recycling and sustainability.”

“We share Keep America Beautiful’s commitment to ensuring our nation remains a clean, green, and beautiful place to live,” said Yuengling. “We hope that with our involvement, and by engaging our passionate and engaged fan base, we will help make a difference in 2024 and beyond.”

Pairing Christmas Cookies with Beer https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/12/17/pairing-christmas-cookies-with-beer/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=pairing-christmas-cookies-with-beer Mon, 18 Dec 2023 02:30:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=13313 Christmas Cookies….

Right away, I blame Scarlet, I hear Cookie Monster yelling “Coooookie” This is where the visualization changes from Cookie Monster chowing down on some cookies to me destroying some Christmas Cookies.  You might have guessed it by this point, I also have a beer in hand.  So let’s figure out the best way to enjoy the holidays with cookies and Beer!

Christmas Cookies and Beer Styles

But let’s be honest you are either making the Christmas cookies or you are baking the Christmas cookies.  Let’s kick it off with The Classic Chocolate Chip Cookie.  I’d grab a stout to wash down some Classics.  I don’t just mean that because it is stout season!  The sweetness from the chocolate chips will pair nicely with a full-bodied stout with incredibly rich and creamy flavor.

Wookies and Cream by Tall Tales Brewing Company

(See our beer review: Wookies and Cream by Tall Tales Brewing Company)

B-52 by Cox Brewing Company

I’ll just go down the list of the classic Christmas cookies I remember over the years.  The next cookie I think of is any sort of sugar cookie!  My Grandma used to make a recipe of her own that was a very soft sugar cookie.  I think she actually called them sugar biscuits.  These need to be paired with a Belgium blonde.  My mouth is watering thinking about this combination again.  Honestly a sugar cookie could pair decent with a wide selection of brews but this will bring some flavors out that you didn’t notice before.

(We didn’t do any reviews of Belgian Blondes, but Josh did do a review of a Belgian Dubbel – so we present: B-52 Belgian Dubbel (Bottle-Conditioned, 2017) – Cox Brewing Company (CBC)).

Scarlet Sunrise – Blackberry and Blueberry (Mellow Mink Brewing)

The next cookie I think of is the peanut butter blossom.  My Aunt used to make these every year.  She knew these were my favorite too.  There are a couple different ways we could go with this one.  We can get a little crazy and pair with any sort of fruited sour and it feels like a grown up PB&J.

(Some beer reviews we suggest: Scarlet Sunrise – Blackberry and Blueberry (Mellow Mink Brewing), Kettle Sour Series (Raspberry) (Natchez Brewing Company), and Sour Blueberry (Edmund’s Oast Brewing Company))

Chocolate Covered Pretzel (Blown Gasket) (Braxton Brewing Company)

I am the person that believes the best invention, besides beer, was the combination of peanut butter and chocolate.  Obviously why this cookie is my favorite but also try it with a chocolatey stout or porter and it brings out more of the chocolate flavors.

(Some chocolatey beer reviews we recommend: Grand Cacao (Troegs Independent Brewing), German Chocolate Cake (Wicked Weed Brewing), Chocolate Covered Pretzel (Blown Gasket) (Braxton Brewing Company), Chocolate Confidential (Sudwerk Brewing Co.), and of course – Hershey’s Chocolate Porter (Yuengling Brewery).

They Burn Them All Away (Broken Goblet Brewing)

I kind of feel bad for even writing about this one but, the red-headed stepchild of cookies, the oatmeal raisin.  I meant to grab a container of chocolate chip cookies at the bakery in the local grocery store but I accidently grabbed oatmeal raisin in my haste to get to Ben’s parent’s house for a picnic.  I’ll never forget the pure look of heart break on his brother in law’s face at the picnic when he cracked open the container and realized they indeed oatmeal raisin and not chocolate chip like I announced.  Ever since then it’s been a joke to make sure I get the right cookie.

An oatmeal raisin cookie needs the help of a Belgian quad.  The golden almost molasses like flavor of most Belgian quads will bring out the natural raisin flavor.  And it will pair nicely with the oatmeal flavor especially if it is an oatmeal raisin cookie has a bit more cinnamon flavor to it.

(A beer review to check out: They Burn Them All Away (Broken Goblet Brewing))
(Or for a Belgian Heavy / Belgian Dark: Mad Elf (Troegs Independent Brewing))

I am summing this up by making sure you know which beer to leave out for Santa with his cookies this year.  Ditch the milk.  Santa wants beer!

Breweries in Pennsylvania – Top 10 (as per Perplexity)

The Top 10 Breweries in Pennsylvania

This is a generated list using Perplexity AI. It is based off of an aggregate of values – mostly rating system based sites like Untappd, Yelp, TripAdvisor, Beer Advocate, and Rate My Beer. It also factors into play certain key blogs – VinePair, our website (The Beer Thrillers), BiPA, and more.

Since its middle of December, I thought it’d be a good time to take a look back at the best breweries of 2023. This list is just breweries in PA, and just for statistical purposes the year of 2023. It was ran through Perplexity AI and put in a few different times to make sure the list was accurate and not just a sequence of things, it was told to use user ratings and check in apps, and it was told to just include 2023 and just to include Breweries in PA. It was also done several times with the same parameters to ensure that the AI was selecting the same breweries and not just throwing out random breweries. The AI also provided its sources.

Top 10 Breweries in Pennsylvania for 2023

The top 10 breweries in Pennsylvania in 2023, according to various sources, are as follows:

  1. Other Half Brewing
  2. The Referend Bier Blendery
  3. Imprint Beer Co
  4. Fermentery Form
  5. Hidden River Brewing
  6. Antifragile Brewing
  7. D.G. Yuengling and Son Brewery
  8. Troegs Brewing Company
  9. Yards Brewing Company
  10. Lancaster Brewing

Additionally, the highest-rated beer in Pennsylvania in 2023 is “Le Roar Grrrz” from Bullfrog Brewery, according to VinePair. These rankings are based on various factors such as user ratings, reviews, and check-ins on platforms like Untappd and Yelp.

3rd Annual Hops and Vines for Hunger Closeout Event

You can read more about the Hops and Vines for Hunger Campaign here:

The Hops and Vines for Hunger 2023 Campaign

The following comes from their campaign (Our Programs) page:

Pennsylvania boasts over 800 breweries and wineries combined across the state — and that number is growing. But just as these numbers are increasing, so are the number of food insecure families and individuals across Pennsylvania. In fact, nearly 2 million Pennsylvanians struggle with hunger every day – including nearly 500,000 children.

That’s why Feeding Pennsylvania, PA Eats, and Breweries in PA are joining forces with local breweries and wineries across the state through Hops & Vines for Hunger — a month-long, statewide fundraiser throughout November. The campaign will aim to:

  • Raise funds to maximize the work of Feeding Pennsylvania’s 9 member food banks and serve Pennsylvanians facing hunger;
  • Support the development of nutrition education resources created by PA Eats to educate food-insecure Pennsylvanians on how to prepare simple, accessible meals with affordable, healthy ingredients commonly found in food pantries;
  • Promote the support of local breweries and wineries across the Commonwealth.

Thank You For Helping

Thank you for helping. This is truly a noble cause and it is with everyone’s participation and help that we can raise money to help feed Pennsylvania. Nobody should go hungry.

Yuengling Brewery – America’s Oldest Craft Brewery

Yuengling Begins To Take the Market Share From Number One Selling Beer Bud Lite

Yuengling seems poised to claim a new title as “America’s number one,” building on its reputation as the nation’s oldest craft brewery—a distinction that sometimes gets overlooked online. The brewery, based in Pottsville, is reportedly encroaching on the market share of America’s best-selling beer, Bud Light.

A recent Newsweek report highlighted a shift in beer popularity in bars and restaurants, showing Bud Light falling to fourth place in terms of popularity, while Yuengling’s market share has expanded. This shift brings the Pennsylvania-based brewery closer to becoming the top beer in America. Data from Bump Williams Consulting indicates that Bud Light’s market share has increased by 8.1%, whereas Yuengling experienced a substantial 25% growth in market share over the same period, moving it up the ranks among America’s largest breweries.

(See our articles on Top Producers in Beer:

This shift appears to be influenced by the negative reaction Bud Light has faced since early 2023. The brand has been losing market share following its partnership with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney in March of that year, a move that has been widely covered and critiqued in the media.

Yuengling has somewhat capitalized on Bud Light’s misstep. Following the controversy, Yuengling took a veiled jab at Bud Light on Twitter, highlighting the latter’s connection to Anheuser-Busch, which is owned by a foreign entity. This detail has prompted some consumers to switch to Yuengling, seeking an American-made beer option.

The impact of Yuengling’s rising sales on Pennsylvania’s beer production remains uncertain. While a significant amount of Yuengling beer is produced in their Pottsville facility, the brewery has been expanding its operations beyond Pennsylvania. This includes a brewery in Florida and a new 42,000 square foot facility in the state, alongside a partnership announced in 2020 with Molson Coors to brew beer outside their traditional East Coast market. The full effect of the sales increase on the state’s beer output is still to be determined.

The decline in Bud Light’s market share since early 2023 seems to be linked to the controversy surrounding its partnership with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney in March of the same year. This development, which has been extensively reported and discussed by numerous media outlets, does not necessitate further elaboration here.

In the midst of this controversy, Yuengling has found itself indirectly connected to Bud Light. Following the latter’s embroilment in public backlash, Yuengling seemingly took a veiled dig at Bud Light on Twitter. Part of the consumer shift away from Bud Light has been attributed to the revelation that it is produced by Anheuser-Busch, a company under foreign ownership. This detail has prompted a significant number of consumers to seek out beer produced within the United States, positioning Yuengling as a preferred alternative. By subtly highlighting its status as an American-made beer on Twitter, Yuengling reinforced its appeal to those seeking domestically produced options, leveraging the situation to underscore its American heritage.

Furthermore, as previously reported, Yuengling, recognized as America’s oldest brewery, had accused Bud Light of infringing on its trademark for Yuengling Flight, a contention that adds another layer to their interaction beyond the aforementioned tweet.

The repercussions of these developments on Pennsylvania’s beer production volumes for the year remain uncertain. Despite a significant amount of Yuengling’s production occurring at its Pottsville facility, the brewery has been broadening its operational scope well outside Pennsylvania’s borders. This expansion includes the establishment of a brewery in Florida and the recent inauguration of a substantial 42,000 square foot facility in the same state. Moreover, Yuengling announced a collaboration with Molson Coors in 2020 aimed at brewing beer beyond its traditional East Coast stronghold. The impact of Yuengling’s sales growth on the beer output within Pennsylvania is still an open question.

History of Yuengling Brewery

The Yuengling brewery boasts a storied history, cementing its status as America’s oldest brewery. Founded in 1829 by David G. Yuengling in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, the brewery has weathered numerous challenges over the years, including Prohibition. Despite such obstacles, it has managed to maintain continuous operation, adapting through innovation and expansion. Yuengling’s enduring legacy is not just a testament to its quality and resilience but also to its role in shaping the American brewing industry. This rich history underpins the brewery’s current endeavors and its response to market dynamics.

The Yuengling Brewery, established in 1829 by German immigrant David G. Yuengling, began its journey in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. Originally named the “Eagle Brewery,” it set its roots in a small American town, focusing on crafting traditional German-style beers. The brewery’s early years were marked by resilience and growth, despite the challenges it faced, including a devastating fire in 1831 which led to the construction of a new, larger facility on Mahantongo Street, where it still stands today.

Throughout the years, Yuengling navigated through the tumultuous waters of American history, notably during Prohibition (1920-1933). Unlike many breweries that couldn’t survive the ban on alcohol, Yuengling diversified its products, producing “near beer” beverages with low alcohol content, and even opening a dairy across from the brewery to sell ice cream, ensuring the company’s survival through one of its most challenging periods.

Post-Prohibition, Yuengling quickly resumed its beer production, celebrating the repeal with the release of “Winner Beer” to mark the end of the dry era. The mid-20th century saw the brewery expanding its reach, slowly transitioning from a local to a regional brewery. Under the leadership of Richard L. Yuengling Jr., the company began modernizing its brewing processes and expanding its distribution, revitalizing the brand and introducing it to new generations.

Today, Yuengling stands as America’s oldest operating brewery, a testament to its enduring legacy and continuous family ownership through six generations. With expansions beyond its original Pennsylvania roots, including a significant presence in Florida and strategic partnerships like the one with Molson Coors, Yuengling continues to grow its footprint while maintaining its commitment to tradition and quality. The brewery’s evolution from a small local operation to a nationally recognized brand embodies the American dream, showcasing resilience, adaptation, and the enduring appeal of its beer to consumers across the country.
