Thank You

Thank you to everyone who voted. I will go into a much bigger thank you on the Results Page, as well as looking for feedback, suggestions for next year (and all other years going forward), and in general people’s thoughts, ideas, and if they enjoyed this year’s tournament or not. I hope everyone did. I appreciate all the time and effort everyone spent on voting and participating in the tournament, and I can only hope everyone enjoyed it. This year’s edition was plagued with a few technical issues on our website, on social media, and all kinds of things, but I think we made it through, just going an extra week long due to the issues. But ending on WrestleMania Night 2, on Easter, and on 4:20 day, kind of made up for it.

I want to congratulate all of the finalists – Allusion Brewing Company (Apollo Conference winner), Collusion Tap Works (Zeus Conference Winner), Liquid Noise Brewing Company (Cascade Conference Winner), and Acclamation Brewing (Liberty Conference Winner). All four breweries did a fantastic job throughout the tournament, and are fantastic breweries period. So if you can, go out and support these great places and people!

There was a total of 256 breweries competing this year, from 13 states and the District of Columbia.  So this was certainly a hard fought win, especially since it’s their second win, for Allusion Brewing Company. Congrats to them (again)!

The Battle of the Breweries 2025: Finals Fatal Four – Way https://thebeerthrillers.com/2025/04/07/the-battle-of-the-breweries-2025-finals-fatal-four-way/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-battle-of-the-breweries-2025-finals-fatal-four-way Mon, 07 Apr 2025 13:00:17 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=16218 The Battle of the Breweries 2025: Finals Fatal Four – Way

Just before you’re about to hit play on that cassette tape of “We Are The Champions” we have one final round to go! Its the Finals Fatal Four – Way! Each of the Conference Champions will be facing off in a fatal four way to determine who is the true Battle of the Breweries (2025) Champion! And this year’s a doozy! We have two returning champions, including the Defending champion – Liquid Noise Brewing Company, as well as two first time finalists. Scroll down to the VOTE section to vote.

The Battle of the Breweries: 2025 – Championship Finals Fatal Four Way

Conference Champions

Let’s take a look at the four conference champions:

Apollo Conference

The winner, defeating Boneshire Brew Works in the Conference Championship, of the Apollo Conference is…………… Allusion Brewing Company! A former Battle of the Breweries Champion!

Cascade Conference

The winner, defeating Shy Bear Brewing – and defending their championship from 2024 – of the Cascade Conference is Liquid Noise Brewing Company!

Liberty Conference

The winner of the Liberty Conference, and making their first Finals appearance, having defeated Wolf Brewing, is Acclamation Brewing!

Zeus Conference

The winner of the Zeus Conference, defeating Dancing Gnome Brewing to advance to their first finals is Collusion Tap Works!

Finals Fatal Four Way

Much like a wrestling fatal four way match, you have four determined, grizzled, hard nosed, tough as nails; competitors facing off to determine the one true winner and champion! We take the winner of each of the conferences and pit them against each other in a four way match. (Think of WrestleMania 2000 with The Rock vs. HHH vs. Big Show vs. Mick Foley!) You can only vote for one brewery, and after two weeks – ending on 4:20, on WrestleMania XLI Night Two, ending on Easter Sunday, on Sunday April 20th, 2025; the brewery with the most votes will be the Battle of the Breweries Champion! You can vote daily for your favorite brewery. So we fully recommend 1) that you bookmark this page so you can come back to it each day, and 2) that you share this page to all of your social media platforms to help your favorite brewery out!

VOTE

(Voting has ended.)

Tournament Guidelines

We fully encourage everyone to have as much fun as possible with this tournament! Share and comment and talk about the breweries facing off. Upset your favorite brewery isn’t in the tournament? Sorry! It means one of us probably haven’t been there, or they just barely missed our cut when deciding the 256 breweries to include! Social media is a fantastic tool for sharing your brewery or your favorite brewery’s voting page. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, BlueSky, Mastodon, Tumblr, LinkTree, umm…. MySpace? LinkedIn? Pinterest? What other social medias do you cool young kids use? Whichever it is, feel free to share and bolster and brag about how your brewery is doing or encourage others to vote for your favorite brewery!

Please do keep it all in fun though. This isn’t meant to belittle or demean breweries or to create real animosity. Its a fun light hearted competition in the spirit of the NCAA March Madness basketball tournament. So with that in mind please enjoy it!

The finals round will be a two week event, unlike the previous rounds (with the exception of the one round due to technical difficulties), which were one week rounds.

Liquid Hero and Gift Horse Join Forces https://thebeerthrillers.com/2025/04/01/liquid-hero-and-gift-horse-join-forces/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=liquid-hero-and-gift-horse-join-forces Tue, 01 Apr 2025 22:30:51 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=16195 Liquid Hero Brewing Company and Brewery TeaHorse Brewing Join Forces

In yet another non-April Fools – April 1st news story – we have Liquid Hero Brewing and Gift Horse Brewing joining forces in Downtown York. A headline that seems perfect for April 1st; not too funny, not too edgy, not another “weird flavor concoction” brewery post; but no — this is no April Fools Joke. Liquid Hero and Gift Horse really are joining forces. Both breweries are located in downtown York, both breweries are trying to find their own way in the ever evolving scene of craft beer and craft brewing, with emerging new costs (like Trump’s Tariffs) and an in-general decline to the industry. Gift Horse Brewing is located at 117 N George St, York, PA 17401 and Liquid Hero Brewing is located at 251 N George St, York, PA 17401.

The Announcement

Earlier today on social media, Liquid Hero and Gift Horse both posted this message:

Liquid Hero and Gift Horse Join Forces

Liquid Hero Brewery, a production brewery with a restaurant location in York City, PA, and Gift Horse Brewing Company, a brew pub and beer garden also located in York City, PA have entered into a collaborative relationship to strengthen their respective brewing endeavors.

In May of 2024, Liquid Hero opened a restaurant location at 251 N George Street, just a few doors down from Gift Horse’s successful brewpub and beer garden location. Several months after opening the restaurant, Gift Horse tapped Liquid Hero to provide brewing and packaging services whereby Liquid Hero, out of their 50 E North Street brewery location, brews and packages several Gift Horse beer brands.

After several months of this collaborative relationship, both Liquid Hero and Gift Horse saw a mutually beneficial opportunity; to expand this relationship to allow Liquid Hero to focus on their new restaurant endeavor and to allow Gift Horse to continue to grow their brand. The resulting opportunity will transfer ownership of Liquid Hero’s brewing equipment only, over the next several years, to Gift Horse. This will bring all production and packaging of all Liquid Hero beer and all Gift Horse beer under one roof at 50 E North Street. Liquid Hero will continue to independently operate their restaurant at 251 N George St and their beer will continue to be produced by the same hands and on the same equipment at 50 E North Street.

Over the next few years, Gift Horse has plans to brew additional brands of beer at 50 E North Street and make the brewery a brewing production hub for both local and regional breweries. Offering contracting services of 7bbl, 10bbl, 15bbl & 30bbl batches and utilizing our canning/packaging systems to be able to provide support to breweries of all sizes. Meanwhile, Liquid Hero will continue to grow their restaurant and will also continue to produce and distribute their beer locally.

Liquid Hero Brewery started in October of 2011 at its original location at 50 E North Street. In May of 2024, they opened a second location as a restaurant at the corner of N George Street and E North Street. After opening the second location, Liquid Hero shut down the brewpub at 50 E North Street and used this location only as brewing operations as well as space for private events.

Gift Horse Brewing Company opened in August of 2018 at its current location at 117 N George Street. In 2019, Gift Horse expanded into the open lot next door and created a 6,000 sq ft outdoor beer garden complete with a 35-seat full service outdoor bar and enough space to accommodate over 150 people. Gift Horse has quickly become a community hub hosting numerous events and fundraisers while focusing on complimenting Downtown York’s vibrant Art’s and Entertainment scene.

Our joint commitment to Downtown York, York County and the region as a whole is to continue to produce quality products and help Central Pennsylvania remain at the forefront of the Craft Brewing Industry.

Gift Horse Brewing Facebook Announcement

(I will also link the full text image they posted later in the article.)

As you can see in this map (Downtown York) – Liquid Hero Brewing and Gift Horse Brewing are just 0.2 miles apart, or 1 minute driving (according to Google; though getting in your car, in and out, traffic, parking, etc……). Gift Horse Brewing is located at 117 N George St, York, PA 17401 and Liquid Hero Brewing is located at 251 N George St, York, PA 17401. Via walking its listed as 4 minutes according to Google Maps.

Given the current environment of the craft brewing industry, and the sheer and steady decline of breweries not just across the state, but nationwide, this sounds like a very promising way to keep both businesses afloat. Just earlier today we announced Butler Brew Works will be closing “indefinitely”.  This also looks to be a boon for the smaller breweries in the region, with the capacity to lease their contracting services and the canning lines as well. So we’ll see how that plays out with distribution for other breweries. This can also be an end to help meet financial goals for both of these breweries as well. Sounds like a three-way win to us. (And who doesn’t like three way wins?)

We will keep everyone updated with future information.

The Battle of the Breweries 2025: Conference Finals https://thebeerthrillers.com/2025/03/31/the-battle-of-the-breweries-2025-conference-finals/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-battle-of-the-breweries-2025-conference-finals Mon, 31 Mar 2025 13:49:35 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=16187 The Battle of the Breweries 2025: Conference Finals

We are here! We are just about to the end. That means its the Conference Finals! The winners of these match-ups will meet up in the Finals Fatal Four-Way and be declared the 2025 Champion! There is just eight breweries left, with four match-ups (one for each conference), and the winners moving on. We have two returning champions in the mix (Allusion Brewing Company and Liquid Noise Brewing Company). All eight breweries that remain are also Pennsylvania breweries too! (Go PA Beer!) So check below to vote, and help decide who moves on to the finals! (Instead of doing an individual page for each conference, I have combined all of the voting into one page.)

The 2025 Battle of the Breweries Conference Finals

Apollo Conference

We have two breweries left and its crunch time for the Apollo Conference!

The match-up is between 21. Boneshire Brew Works vs. 30. Allusion Brewing Company.

Cascade Conference

In a back to back for the conferences, we have a former champion reaching the finals. (Allusion Brewing in the Apollo Conference.) Liquid Noise Brewing Company is the returning champion. Can they move on to the finals to defend their championship?

The match-up is between 25. Shy Bear Brewing and 26. Liquid Noise Brewing Company.

Liberty Conference

The third conference has a tough match-up, and is the second Pittsburgh vs. Harrisburg area brewery matchup (the first being Allusion – Pittsburgh Area vs. Boneshire – Harrisburg area). In this one we have Acclamation Brewing defending Pittsburgh area vs. Wolf Brewing defending the Harrisburg area.

The match-up is between 10. Wolf Brewing vs. 17. Acclamation Brewing.

Zeus Conference

The final conference is seeing yet another Pittsburgh area brewery going head to head with a Central PA area brewery. We have Dancing Gnome Brewing of Pittsburgh vs. Collusion Tap Works of York and Lititz.

The match-up is between 2. Dancing Gnome Brewing vs. 17. Collusion Tap Works.

Voting Rules

Voting is straight forward and simple. There are four conferences: APOLLO, CASCADE, LIBERTY, and ZEUS. (All named after different hop varietals.) Each week, from Monday through Sunday, there will be a voting page for each of the conference. Click on the voting page, open it up, and it will have a pop-down survey poll. Starting with the Round of 64, all the way down to the finals of each conference, followed by a Fatal Four Way that will have the winner of each conference fighting for the grand champion!

You can vote daily for each of the conferences, so you can make up to 4 votes (one per conference) per day. Each round will be one week, except for the Finals which will be two weeks. The rounds are as follows: Round of 64, Round of 32, Round of 16, Round of 8, Round of 4, Conference Finals (Round of 2), and the Finals Fatal Four-Way (Winner of each Conference in a four-way match). So for the first week, there will be 32 matches in the conference, then in the second week there will be 16 matches, then 8 matches, then 4 matches, then the last two rounds are just 1 match each.

For the Conference Finals I might just make it 1 voting page rather than 4 distinct voting pages. It all depends on what will be easier for the blog’s coding and all that back house stuff.

Voting for this round will end on Sunday April 6th.

Stony Run Brew House

Stony Run Brew House is selling their brewery and business to a local brewery. No word yet on what brewery has purchased or bought them; just word that it is a “local brewery”.

Stony Run Brew House made the announcement today that they were selling their brewery and business, located at 3605 E Market St, York, PA 17402.

We previously posted word about a York area brewery trying to sell their shares, no word on if this is them. (Most likely based on size and volume it is not.) (See: Rumors and Round-Ups: Rumor Mill – 5.23.24)

Announcement

Stony Run Brew House posted this to their Facebook page earlier:

An anonymous post made in the Breweries in Planning group.

Rumors and Round-Ups (Rumor Mill 5.23.24)

We’re back with another (smaller) rumor mill. This time localized to a singular thing, rather than a more full listing of rumors and round-ups.

(See the previous Rumors and Round-Ups from January 2024.)

Occasionally, we get some information, snippets and things that I feel might be worth posting about, but not sure if they could be a full article on their own, and as I do research and look into things, I don’t have a lot more to go on other than insider business talk.

So this will be an infrequent series I suppose here at the blog, of just “rumors” “possible news” and things that might never come to fruition, might never blossom, etc. Things will be kept track of though.

5.23.24

As you can see with the photo attached to this article, an Anonymous Post was made to the Facebook group “Brewery in Planning” which is an international Facebook group designed for brewers, owners, and other brewery staff that are currently in operation or soon to be operation, or for people looking to possibly open their own brewery and wanting to get some feedback, advice, or just answers to their questions.

The post reads:

Posting for a member who wishes to remain anonymous
We are majority owners of a 7bbl production brewery and restaurant located in York County PA with gross sales of 1.2 million dollars for 2023. Life circumstances have necessitated we relocate and we are seeking to sell our shares by the end of the summer. If you were to purchase our shares, it would come with running the business on a daily basis. Please contact the admin for this page if you are interested in learning more information
Currently, the following is a list of breweries in York County, PA:
  1. Aldus Brewing
  2. AleCraft Brewery
  3. Aviator Brewing
  4. Big Bottom Brewery
  5. Black Cap Brewing
  6. Buon Appetito Ristorante
  7. Collusion Tap Works
  8. Fat Bat Brewing
  9. Gift Horse Brewing
  10. Gunpowder Falls Brewing
  11. Hell in a Bucket Brewery
  12. Lydian Stone Brewing
  13. Mexitaly
  14. Mudhook Brewing
  15. Scrubby’s Craft Brewery
  16. Sign of the Horse Brewing
  17. Something Wicked Brewing
  18. South County Brewing
  19. Staggered Leg Brewery
  20. Stony Run Brewhouse
  21. Vortex Brewing
  22. Warehouse Gourmet Bistro & Brew Pub
  23. Winding Path Brewing
Going back up to the post, the interesting statistics to look at are:
  • 7 BBL System
  • Production Brewery
  • 1.2 Million Dollars in Gross Sales

The other interesting note is that they are looking to sell their shares so that they can relocate. So they are looking to sell, not close, and the owner(s) are looking to relocate or are already relocating elsewhere. The post doesn’t say if they will be opening a new brewery at their new location (my assumption is that they won’t be since they are selling shares and full production brewery).

We will keep you updated as we get more information. In the meantime, its interesting to speculate on which brewery of those 23 it might be.

We are working on a massive project here at The Beer Thrillers. We are creating a map of all of the breweries across the United States. State by state we are adding maps of all of the different states with every brewery in each state. (We will eventually get to the US Territories, as well as the Canadian Provinces, and possibly more countries; as well as doing some fun maps like a map of all the breweries we’ve been to, and other fun maps.) You can find the brewery maps here:

We are also working on a project of creating printable and downloadable PDFs and resources to be able to check and keep track of all of the breweries you’ve been to. So stay tuned for that project once we are finished with the Brewery Maps of the US States.

Central PA Pour https://thebeerthrillers.com/2022/12/17/central-pa-pour/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=central-pa-pour Sat, 17 Dec 2022 14:55:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=10148
The Central PA Pour – Podcasters out of the York area of Central Pennsylvania

Long Time Coming

Oh boy, if you could only see the back and forth e – mail chains between myself and Bret, you would know this was a long time coming. (Since March this year actually.) But finally it’s happening. Tomorrow, Josh and myself (B. Kline) will be traveling down to Dover / York area to head into the Central PA Pour’s studio to do a podcast with them.

They have been so generous in getting Josh and I to come down and just basically “shoot the shit” on their podcast. We don’t have any real topics that we will be hitting or going on and on about, but instead just chatting and hanging out. We will be discussing the blog – The Beer Thrillers, we will be discussing craft beer, the Central PA beer scene, and a whole host of other things, who knows what all.

I have done a few podcasts with friends in the past when they ran a (now defunct) podcast “WTF Did I Watch” and “A Mexican and a Scot Walk Into a Bar…” as well as I have been on “Beers with Strangers”. This will be Josh’s first podcast (so hopefully they will be gentle with him.)

So What’s Going On

They originally really tried to get us on back in March at the start of our Battle of the Breweries, unfortunately with how busy I was, and with everything we had going on (myself, Amy, my work, Amy’s pregnancy, Josh, Josh’s work, as well as the Central PA Pour themselves) it didn’t work out. But we will be on Season 2 (shame we missed out on Season 1).

As I said above, we will be just shooting the breeze and discussing a wide range of topics rather than anything in particular.

This episode will premier on their social medias and their YouTube channel, and wherever you get your podcasts roughly around the end of the year or the first week of the new year. It will either be a NYE episode or a first episode of 2023.

Central PA Pour

The Central PA Pour is a group of guys from the Dover / York area of Central Pennsylvania. From their PodBay description:

We are a group of friends, neighbors to be exact, that have acquired a taste for a variety of craft beers. We decided to make a podcast to highlight the different craft beers in the south central Pennsylvania area. Each episode we will sample a few local craft beers with hopes of visiting the breweries and meeting the brewers to discuss their love of craft beer. Join us on this journey into the independent breweries and what makes it so special.

PodBay: Central PA Pour – About Us

They are now currently on their second season, they are also filming a podcast shortly or have just done one recently with Derek Wolf of Wolf Brewing Company which will most likely be their seventh episode. We will most likely be their eighth episode of their second season. Their first season had seventeen episodes. They are currently up to about 21 videos on their YouTube channel.

The Central PA Pour consists of four guys who just love beer and talking and hanging out with each other. There is Bret, Ben, Kevin, and Dave. For our podcast tomorrow I believe it will be Dave, Kevin, and Bret joining Josh and myself. (Or, more like us joining them.)

They are on all of the social medias (more than I can keep track of, more than I do here with the blog, thats for sure). You can follow them on the following social media:

Be Sure to Follow

Be sure to go through their social media platforms and give them a follow and subscribe. It will really help them out, and it’ll keep you informed in the Central PA area.

Our Episode

When our episode will air we will be making a blog post here, and linking to the video of it. So be sure to check in and have no fear you will be the first to know when our episode airs. We will write up an article here on the site, link to their podcast / video sites for you to be able to watch it and enjoy it. It should be entertaining. Josh is a great entertainer so this should be really fun and entertaining.

Thanks For Reading

Thank you as always everyone for reading. The year is winding down, but big stuff is coming out. Like I said in previous recent posts, big stuff is happening here at the blog. Like the podcast tomorrow for example. So always keep us bookmarked, subscribed, followed, etc, so you can stay up to date with us. We really appreciate all of you reading the blog and checking out the site and all of our posts. It means a lot to us.

Cheers All!

Brewery Touring York and Hanover PA https://thebeerthrillers.com/2020/07/05/brewery-touring-york-and-hanover-pa/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=brewery-touring-york-and-hanover-pa Sun, 05 Jul 2020 19:00:49 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=3748

So, this was meant to get written a few days ago, but everything kinda turned upside down on its head when Wednesday I got the call that I was going back to work, and officially Friday (July 3rd) was my first day back. I was also switched to swing shift, and our days went from being 8 Hour days to 10 Hour Days. So this post is a bit late in getting up and I apologize for that.

Also, this will be somewhat similar in some of my other travelogue and brewery hopping posts. So if you like reading about me and checking out breweries, I think you will dig this. This will probably not get posted until July 5th, but I’ve started it now on July 4th. I wanted to get it written before going back to work – yesterday – July 3rd, but it just didn’t happen. Friday didn’t quite go as planned, and I didn’t get nearly as much done as I wanted before having to get to work by 5PM for a meeting, and then starting my 10 hour actual work day. Today – July 4th – I start at 6PM, but I’m only going to be writing for about an hour before celebrating 4th of July with my daughters. I got home last night (technically I suppose this morning), ate a little bit, fell asleep, and woke back up at 8AM and then at 10AM, and got a little work done at home and now started on the blog, but hopefully it will – fingers crossed – it will then get finished tomorrow in my time between waking up and going back to work. (I feel like this will become a regular cycle on my new schedule…. work…. sleep…. write…. work…. sleep….) (Its looking like I’m lined up for six to eight days straight at 10HR days…. so, we’ll see how I survive all this.)

Ok, lets get right into this. This travelogue is pretty straight forward. Ming messaged me about any plans upcoming, and I told him I was going down to York for The York Emporium’s book sale. Ming offered to come on with, since he had some errands and chores to do in the York and Hanover areas, thus it was decided, we’d make a whole day trip and excursion out of it. Why not right? It was furlough and we had no plans, so why not? Grab some cheap books, some drinks, hit a state park, have a bit of adventure… why not?

Luckily it didn’t pan out like my trip with my daughters to Monocacy. So it wasn’t one of “those adventures” (sorry to disappoint). This was going to be a pretty straight forward trip. I drive to meet Ming at his place in Mount Joy, we drive down to York, stop at the York Emporium for the book sale, hit a brewery in York, Ming drops some stuff off for a friend in the York area, we go to Hanover to the state park there, hit a few breweries, then head back to Mount Joy and then I would drive home after calling it a day. Straight forward, simple, easy peasy.

The York Emporium

Friday, June 26th, 2020, I drove up from Hummelstown to Mount Joy to meet Ming and the two of us headed down to York. First, of course, Ming had to show me the impressive assortment of animals on his property – quails, chickens, turtles, dogs, kittens, quail eggs…. and possibly a dragon, not sure. He gathered the stuff he needed to drop off (mum clippings that he potted and grew) and off we were to York Pennsylvania.

A quick drive down and we got to The York Emporium roughly around 2PM. I’ve been to The York Emporium once or twice before, I believe both prior times were when the store was doing their book sale – just like this time. This year, unfortunately due to the COVID-19, many libraries have announced they aren’t doing their book sales (the Hershey Public Library, one of the biggest in the area has announced their not, I believe Hummelstown’s – which is in October – is still yet undecided), so it was nice to get to a book sale of some sort.

Row after row, shelf after shelf of books at the York Emporium

We meandered through the halls and rows and shelves of books. Browsing this section, that section, etc. Philosophy, Civil War, sociology, US Presidents, science fiction, history, the classics, etc. All told, I ended up walking out with a fairly sizeable amount of books – 16 books for myself, and 1 for Ming – for only 52$. Can’t beat deals like that, when hardcover books released typically are 25.99-34.99$ nowadays. After getting back in the car, we jumped a few short blocks over and found us at brewery number one for the day….

Mudhook Brewing Company

We didn’t stay here long, Ming was worried about his parking meter and it running out, but we did enjoy the nice sun, sat out for a pint. I got a pint (in a plastic throwaway cup) of Cherry Lane Strong Ale. It’s a Belgian Strong Dark Ale; 9% ABV, 22 IBU, and its Untappd description reads: “Dark Belgian strong ale brewed with tart cherries, dark Belgian candy sugar and trappist style yeast.”

Cherry Lane Strong Ale at Mudhook Brewing Co.

It was tasty, and was a nice strong beer to start the day. I gave it **** on Untappd. It has a global average rating (as of 7.5.20) of 3.59.

Getting back to his car with just two minutes to spare on the meter, we then headed out for his first errand, which was to drop off some of the mum clippings at a friend’s house. I didn’t know this, but Ming explained to me if you cut a decent size branch (or piece) of a mum, diagonally of course, and root it in water and soil for a bit, it will grow to become a full mum in due time. It is amazing how some plants can do that, I know of some, like roses that can do that as well.

After dropping off the flowers, we were on our way to Hanover Pennsylvania, and back to back breweries. The first of which was….

Miscreation Brewing, Hanover Pennsylvania

Miscreation Brewing Company. Lovely little brewery on a busy square in the town. Me and Ming sat out for a pint, and were going to get food, but their kitchen wasn’t going to open until 5PM and we were there at 3:30PM. So I ordered a pint of Mediocre Security Blanket.

Mediocre Security Blanket – a lager by Miscreation Brewing Company

Mediocre Security Blanket is an Amber Lager by Miscreation Brewing Company, its 5% ABV and has 30IBU. Their Untappd description is simple and to the point: “Amber Lager brewed with Simcoe hops.” I gave it ***.50 on Untappd. As of 7.5.20 it has a global average rating of 3.89.

Before we left, I grabbed a four pack to go (for Cadorus State Park). For 15$, they even let me make it a mixed four pack, so I grabbed 2 stouts, a pale ale, and a pumpkin beer (they only had three options of canned beers). 15$ for a 4 pack is a great deal, especially when you can mix-match it (that comes out to 3.75$ per beer). Many craft breweries tend to be 16-24$ for a 4 pack, so while not as cheap as getting a case of something like Natty Ice for 8-12$, its cheap for the standards. And I much rather spend 15$ for a 4 pack from Miscreation than 10$ for a case of Natty Ice…. any day of the week. That’s for damn sure.

After Miscreation Brewing, we walked around the block and came to…

Something Wicked Brewing Company

Something Wicked Brewing Company. Another lovely spot in Hanover Pennsylvania. This time we went inside (they had no outdoor seating as far as I could tell). And here Ming was able to get some food too. The entrance we took led us through a winding, twisting, route into the main tap room and dining area. The hallways we walked through had paintings from various movie franchises. Most notably (to me at least) being the twin girls from The Shining.

For beers at Something Wicked I got two pints while there, Ming as usual, just got water, but for food he ordered tacos which he said were delicious. Claimed they weren’t quite as good as his, but next best thing. So….. take that for what its worth…

The beers I had there were White Wookie and Incessant Debauchery – Curuba.

White Wookie by Something Wicked Brewing Company

White Wookie is a white IPA, it is 8.1% ABV and has 109 IBUs. The Untappd description reads: “A Belgian style white IPA double dry hopped with Galaxy hops. Rich hop bouquet with bubble gum hop finish”. I rated it ***.75 on Untappd, and currently (as of 7.5.20) it has a global average rating of 3.62.

Incessant Debauchery – Curuba by Something Wicked Brewing Company, Hanover Pennsylvania

Incessant Debauchery – Curuba is a 5.3% ABV fruited sour by Something Wicked Brewing Company. It has 24 IBUs and its Untappd description reads: “The latest in our rotating fruited sour series. It features the puckering flavor of the Curuba (Banana Shaped Passion fruit from Latin America) with a touch of vanilla. This bold passion fruit is our sourest offering yet!” My Untappd rating for it was: ****. As of 7.5.20 on Untappd it has a global average rating of 4.05.

Before leaving I grabbed a crowler of Butt Monkey, which I later enjoyed, sharing it with D. Scott during one of our gaming sessions for his Knights of Nostalgia page. (You can click the link provided there to check it out. We somewhat regularly stream us playing old school NES, SNES, etc, video games. He streams regularly, and I am a guest on his ‘show’. Similar to the podcast him and Esteban [Estey] have that I also somewhat regularly appear on – So a Mexican and a Scott Walk Into a Bar….). I might do a full beer review of this in the future, to be determined (I have so many beers I want to write up reviews for.)

But, a quick summary of it – Butt Monkey is a 5.1% ABV American Pale Ale, it has 26 IBU, and the Untappd description for it reads: “This session Pale Ale is dedicated to all of the Butt Monkeys out there that like to send cease and desist letters to the small guys. Enjoy this crushable beer as you think about those whom you wish ceased and desisted.” I gave it ***.75, the global average rating (as of 7.5.20) is 3.58.

Codorus State Park, Pennsylvania

Now with the food eaten – which makes Ming a happy Ming; and beers were drank – which makes me a happy Ben; we were on our way to Codorus State Park in Hanover Pennsylvania. Technically, according to the Wikipedia page on Codorus State Park its located in Heidelberg, Manheim, Penn, and West Manheim Townships in southwestern York County, Pennsylvania in the United States. As the Wikipedia states: “Codorus State Park is a 3,500-acre (1,400 ha) Pennsylvania state park in Heidelberg, Manheim, Penn, and West Manheim Townships in southwestern York County, Pennsylvania in the United States. The park was created around Lake Marburg, an artificial lake covering 1,275 acres (516 ha), and is named for Codorus Creek, which forms the lake. Codorus State Park is located on Pennsylvania Route 216, 3 miles (4.8 km) from the borough of Hanover.”

Kayaks at Codorus State Park

Either way, Ming and myself came to kayak, and so that is exactly what we did. Normally we hike trails and do all that kind of stuff, but this time instead of taking a hike like we did for Ricketts Glenn we went kayaking. I’m not much of a water guy; drinking it, swimming in it, boating in it, kayaking in it, etc – just not my cup of tea (or cup of water if you will…… pa-dum-dissss…..) but here we were, and so we were going to do it. I brought along my four-pack from Miscreation Brewing to enjoy while kayaking.

It was a beautiful view, and we had a great time. I learned how to kayak properly without just going in circles like we were on The Simpsons or the Three Stooges. Got to watch the sunset a bit which was gorgeous, and I got to drink a few beers. Plus got a bit of a workout in as well, so can’t complain about that I suppose.

The map of our kayaking adventure at Codorus State Park

The two beers I had while kayaking were – MBC IPA and Smashed PumpKing Porter.

MBC IPA by Miscreation Brewing

MBC IPA is an American IPA (relatively a session IPA in this case) thats 5% ABV and 72 IBUs. The Untappd description reads: “West Coast style IPA. Brewed with Chinook and Cascade hops.” I gave it ***.75, and its global average rating (as of 7.5.20) is 3.87.

Smashed PumpKing Porter by Miscreation Brewing

I think the face of the pumpkin on the can is how Ming looked quite a few times during our kayaking travels. (Needless to say, I was not the best person to do a tandem kayak with.) Anyway…. the porter is a 6.5% ABV and 30 IBU Pumpkin / Yam Beer porter. Its Untappd description reads: “Seasonal Porter brewed with Pumpkin and Pumpkin spices.” I gave it ***.75 on Untappd, and the global average rating for it is 3.53 as of 7.5.20.

After finishing the kayaking we got back in the car and headed back up through York to make a stop and then to get back to Ming’s house in Mount Joy where I originally met him at. Once on the road, I attempted to get a last shot of the sunset.

My attempt at taking a picture of the sunset.

Its not the best piece of photography, and its not the best picture… but it was too gorgeous of a sunset not to at least attempt getting a picture of it. Plus I was a few beers in by this point, and taking the picture through the car. Either way, let it be known – there was a beautiful sunset that evening. And that I attempted to document it for all of you – my faithful readers.

Coming back up through York we made the last stop for Ming, and I decided (while he was running the mums up to the house) to take a gander at the old Untappd map and see if there were any breweries in the direct vicinity… and lo and behold, just up ahead on the highway was one. So, needless to say, we stopped at Stony Run Brew House. Stony Run was nice, the inside looked beautiful, almost like an Italian Villa style restaurant, reminded me of the old Italian Villa Rosa that used to be on Route 22 in Grantville (where the new Sheetz is at the corner of 743 and 22).

We went in to hit the bathroom and get a table outside. Ordered some nacho chips. I believe we tried to order fries or quesadilla or something else but they were out, so we ended up with the nacho chips. I ordered a flight. I think the only other place that offered a flight (of the breweries we visited on June 26th – Mudhook Brewing, Miscreation Brewing, Something Wicked Brewing, and Stony Run Brewing) was Mudhook Brewing. So two out of four, not bad. But, I didn’t get a flight at Mudhook due to time. Typically when trying out new breweries I like to get flights so I can sample more of their beers and try as much as I can, and then decide what to buy to take home, but given the current environment with COVID-19 and everything, its understandable that many places aren’t doing flights.

My flight from Stony Run Brew House

They had a few guest taps, one of which was a delicious sour from Weyerbacher. So my flight was three beers from Stony Run Brewing and one from Weyerbacher. My flight was: first from Stony Run Brewing – Blackstrap English Porter, Irish Eyes, Capt. Jack Block – Hell, and from Weyerbacher – the Rico Guave. All were very good.

A quick rundown of the flight:

  • Bootstrap English Porter – 5.5% ABV, 31 IBU. “The key ingredient to this moderate strength brown beer is the addition of blackstrap molasses, contributing to its roasty character and bitterness. This Porter goes down smooth and easy.” My rating: ***.75 / global rating (7.5.20): 3.8

While at Stony Run it began to drizzle on us a bit, and we could hear lightening and thunder in the distance. After finishing up we headed back to Mount Joy. Where once there, we went over and visited a friend of his who is turning his barn into a bar / rec area for himself and friends and is going to be setting up pinball machines and other kinds of games. I also got to play with a Pug puppy, so just that right there made my day.

Finally it was time to call it a day (well now night) at 2-3AM after Don came home from work. He had started back up at the casino before the rest of us. I myself now started back up at work on the 3rd, while Ming still hasn’t gotten his return call yet. But soon, shortly, he will.

And that was our trip around York and Hanover Pennsylvania. We visited Mudhook Brewing, Miscreation Brewing, Something Wicked Brewing, and Stony Run Brewing. I hope you all enjoyed this brewery touring. Before I got the call back to work me and Ming made a plan to visit the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon and Wellsboro PA and visit a few breweries in that neck of the woods (probably New Trail Brewing while up there too). But with me going back to work, that is currently on hold. But rest assured, you will read about it on here when we go.

Ok everyone, cheers, and stay safe, especially as places are reopening. Don’t get lax, still wash, cover your face, and take care of each other. Cheers!
