Beer Wall on Penn has announced they are officially closed.

Beer Wall on Penn has announced they are officially closed

Another staple of craft beer in Reading, Pennsylvania, has announced they are closed. Located at 619 Penn Ave, West Reading, PA 19611, the Beer Wall on Penn has been in operation for nearly five and a half years. On the same street as Chatty Monks Brewing / Pagoda City Brewing, Willow Creek Brewing, and Broken Chair Brewery. In just the past two years Chatty Monks has undergone big changes and turned into Pagoda City Brewing with new management, Willow Creek Brewing has closed, and Broken Chair Brewery just recently closed as well.

Their announcement on social media reads:

🌟 **Important Announcement** 🌟
After 5 1/2 incredible years the ave, we regret to inform you that Beer Wall on Penn has closed it’s doors. We want to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt gratitude to all our amazing current and past employees. Your hard work, dedication, and passion have played an essential role in making Beer Wall a household name. To our customers, thank you for every pint poured, every smile shared, and every memory created. We couldn’t have done it without you. I got to live out a dream and for that, I’m forever thankful. It was one hell of a run! ❤️

Reactions

Some reactions from people on Reddit, Facebook, and others talk about Reading, and the craft beer industry as a whole. For examples…

Broken Chair brewing, Say Cheese, Nitro Bar, Willow Creek Brewery, and now Beer Wall on Penn closed. WHAT THE HELL WEST READING?!?!?!

Scott Horner

And from Reddit:

Say Cheese, Nitro Bar, and West Reading Motor Club all closed because of a scandal involving the club owners son who managed Nitro and WMC. From what I’ve heard: none of those restaurants were profitable anyway.

Broken Chair’s owner said he was promoted at work, close to retirement, wanted to slow down and not invest more into growing the business.

Willowcreek closed because the owners retired.

Beer Wall: no clue.

My opinion: the restaurant/brewery business isn’t an easy one. And there were so many in WR. Two of the originals (Chatty Monks and Barley Mow) still seem busy. People might say it’s prices and inflation but Barley Mow is the most expensive of them all yet they’re busy because the food is amazing.

Most businesses fail in good times and bad. Honestly, I have no idea how half the businesses in WR make any money and most close within a year. Either there’s just no demand, they don’t market, or another business in a saturated market gets most of the business. That’s how capitalism works!

State by state we are adding maps of all of the different states with every brewery in each state. (We will eventually get to the US Territories, as well as the Canadian Provinces, and possibly more countries; as well as doing some fun maps like a map of all the breweries we’ve been to, and other fun maps.) You can find the brewery maps here:

We are also working on a project of creating printable and downloadable PDFs and resources to be able to check and keep track of all of the breweries you’ve been to. So stay tuned for that project once we are finished with the Brewery Maps of the US States.

Willow Creek Brewing to Permanently Close https://thebeerthrillers.com/2024/04/11/willow-creek-brewing-to-permanently-close/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=willow-creek-brewing-to-permanently-close Thu, 11 Apr 2024 14:30:05 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=14758

Willow Creek Brewing Company will be permanently closing on June 16th.

Willow Creek Brewing to Permanently Close

It has been announced on social media and in the news that the Berks County brewery located in West Reading – Willow Creek Brewing – will be closing. The owners announcing that the last day would be on June 16th of 2024.

The brewery opened in fall of 2020. A time of much flux and confusion due to the COVID – 19 pandemic, as well as a time when a lot of breweries across Pennsylvania were opening and also some had their openings delayed.

The owners Mark and Joanne Camlin made the decision and the announcement on their social media pages (for the brewery) that June 16th would be the last day.

With a heavy heart June 16th will be Willow Creek’s last day. With the rise of goods and sevices along with the changing tides of consumers, it is time to move onto our next chapter, retirement. The good news is, we still have 2 ½ months left to sing, dance, drink, and celebrate together. Come in and visit our incredible team Amy, John, and Jake, the best bartenders/friends ever! You guys are priceless and we love you!

  • Mark and Joanne Camlin

The brewery boasts a diverse range of craft beers, such as the Ugly Dog, a hazy IPA from New England; Brooks Fore Ever, a gentle blonde ale; Basement Monkey, featuring black cherry notes; Hollow Chocolate Bunny’s, a rich stout; West Reading IPA, a classic West Coast IPA; Faller’s Pretzel Ale, a unique wheat ale infused with pretzels; and the delightful Nice Peach!, a peach-infused blonde ale.

Visitors can savor their drinks either inside the welcoming taproom or outdoors in a charming beer garden, which is outfitted with cornhole boards, twinkling string lights, and communal picnic tables.

Additionally, the brewery often hosts food trucks, offering a variety of culinary delights to complement the beer selection.

Willow Creek Brewing has consistently demonstrated its commitment to the community, notably organizing a fundraiser in 2023 that donated all proceeds to support those impacted by the tragic explosion at the R.M. Palmer Company chocolate factory.

The Announcement

The announcement was posted to the brewery’s social media accounts three days ago:

For over 40+ years, Mark’s dream was to own a brewery. He wanted to share his love for beer with the world. We have done that for the past 3 ½ years and what an adventure it has been.
We have made such incredible friendships here. We’ve watched friendships form, love grow, marriages begin, and babies bless our WCB family. You all were so supportive when we lost Jo’s mom and dad, we are blessed. We cherish each and every one of you. We are grateful for the few years we’ve had together. We never would have made it this far without the help of so many of you. There are too many people to name, but you know who you are.
So, it is with a heavy heart that we announce the closing of Willow Creek Brewing.
June 16th, will be our last day open.
Cheers,
Mark and Jo 🍻

Willow Creek Brewing – Facebook Post

One individual expressed, “Best of luck in your next adventure! Our family adores everything about WCB!”

Another commented, “Wishing you both a wonderful retirement! It’s sad to see Willow Creek go. Your hospitality and the dogs always made us feel right at home!”

A different user shared, “While I’m happy for you, your absence will be felt! May your retirement be filled with love, joy, and countless unforgettable moments…cherish every second!”

Our Visit

Amy and I got to visit back in 2022 after being in Reading for a children’s clothing event as we were preparing for Scarlet. We got to visit them, hang out in Reading, and visit a few other spots that day. We really enjoyed our time there, and got to pet some lovely dogs and got to meet Amy (the bartender) who told us about how she followed the site. They were all such wonderful people and the beer was really enjoyable. This will be a sad loss for the community and for craft beer in Pennsylvania.

Thank you for the memories.
