It’s Pumpkin Time! (Grandma SueAnn and Amy Review Zombies and Double Zombies are People Too and Braaaiins!) https://thebeerthrillers.com/2024/09/10/its-pumpkin-time-grandma-sueann-and-amy-review-zombies-and-double-zombies-are-people-too-and-braaaiins/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=its-pumpkin-time-grandma-sueann-and-amy-review-zombies-and-double-zombies-are-people-too-and-braaaiins Tue, 10 Sep 2024 13:44:58 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=15499

It’s Pumpkin Time!

So…. a couple leaves have changed color on the tree in our front yard.  So…. it’s technically not too early, right?  I can talk about pumpkin spice now?  They were the first ones I saw in the store and I had to grab a couple for me and Grandma SueAnn to enjoy.   (See: A Beer Review by Grandma SueAnn [Beer Review: Braaaiins! by Spring House Brewing Company].)

We were shopping at the local Weiss and I saw it on an end-cap and I had to have it.  Braaaiins by Spring House Brewing Company.  I grabbed the 4pack with the approving nod from the boyfriend.  I could hardly wait long enough for them to chill.  Grandma SueAnn was in agreement; kicking our pumpkin beer drinking season off with a loved classic was the way to go. The first pumpkin beer of the year, near end of August, and I had to grab it!

Braaaiins! by Spring House Brewing

Once chilled this pumpkin ale is the perfect beer to kick off Autumn with.  It is described on Untapped as “our pumpkin ale is brewed with generous amounts of real pumpkin blended into the mash.  The subtle fresh pumpkin flavor is enhanced by the addition of a touch of traditional autumn spices and sweet dough, thus creating a beer with an orange amber color, warm pumpkin aroma, a bold malt center and a crisp finish.  We are proud to offer you a balanced and delectable fall treat.  Suitable for zombies.”  It has an 8.5% ABV so I isn’t anything to mess around with.  It has an overall rating on Untapped of 3.70.

Zombies are People Too by New Trail Brewing

On another occasion we swung into West Connection Beer Vault in Hummelstown (find West Connection Beer Vault on Facebook).  Amongst the mix of six we picked out were two from New Trail Brewing. (We also scored a fantastic Barleywine by 3 Floyds Brewing – Pillar of Beasts. See Ben’s beer review of that here: Beer Review: Pillar of Beasts by 3 Floyds Brewing.)

Zombies Are People Too and Double Zombies, two pumpkin beers from the mid – Central PA brewery up in Williamsport. They clock in at a 5.7%ABV and an 8.5% ABV respectively. My first instinct was to see if Grandma SueAnn could tell the difference between the two New Trail pumpkin beers. (Because who better to try out new pumpkin beers with than Grandma SueAnn?) Yes, the Double Zombies has a higher ABV but Double Zombies is also supposed to be packed with, according to Untapped “twice the strength, maple syrup, vanilla, and pumpkin spice.”  Grandma SueAnn thought she tasted just a bit more spice to Double Zombies but she happily helped me drink both pumpkin beers.

Overall though we enjoyed both of the New Trail pumpkin options. In the mid-state (Harrisburg area) you can find them at your different beer distributors and bottle shops like Breski’s Beverages, West Connection Beer Vault, Brass Rail, Bradford Village Beer and Soda, as well as at your grocery stores like Wegmans, Weiss, and Giant. You might even be able to find them in some gas stations like Rutters, WaWa, or Sheetz. So be on the lookout and the hunt!

Check out our Instagram post about the pumpkin beers: Pumpkin Beers on The Beer Thrillers @ Instagram. (And be sure to follow us on Instagram at: https://instagram.com/the_beer_thrillers).

Both are wonderful beers for this time of year and will definitely get you into that fall and pumpkin season feeling!

Fidens?! Adroit Theory? Xul Brewing? RAR Brewing? Southern Grist? Resident Culture? Burley Oak? Dewey? Crooked Crab? Other Half? Fourscore? Dancing Gnome? Black Flag?

Sign us up!

This is an absolute star studded lineup, and we can’t wait. Amy and I will be going. Looking to meet up with a lot of the Central PA Whalerz and hopefully doing a beer share afterwards as well. (Because… why not do a beer share after a mammoth four hour brewfest?)

Unlike the 5th Anniversary Event where Amy and I took the Friday off, and made a huge brewery trip out of it, this year, we’re just going to be going down Saturday morning, hitting up the brewfest, spending the night, and then hitting a few breweries on the way home Sunday. Still a lot of fun, but possibly a little bit more laid back. (Possibly.)

Jackass Brewing Adding Williamsport Location in 2024 https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/11/13/jackass-brewing-adding-williamsport-location-in-2024/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=jackass-brewing-adding-williamsport-location-in-2024 Mon, 13 Nov 2023 17:19:07 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=13085 Jackass Brewing Expanding to Williamsport

The Lewisburg brewery has teased and now announced that they will be adding a second location in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

The Northcentral PA group that first teased and showed the above picture, released a report that then Jackass Brewing corroborated and shows that they are indeed expanding into Williamsport. The Northcentral PA report can be found here: Northcentral PA Report – Williamsport.

The new brewery location will be at 301 W. Third Street in Williamsport. This puts them just seven minutes away from New Trail Brewing, and just two minutes away from Bullfrog Brewery.

Williamsport Pennsylvania is quickly becoming a brewery destination spot – with New Trail Brewing, Bullfrog Brewery, Boom City Brewing, Rosko’s Brewhouse, Riepistine’s Brewpub, Therapy Brewing, and now Jackass Brewery. Excluding Therapy Brewing – in nearby Montoursville – all of the other breweries are located in Williamsport and are within a total driving distance of 18 minutes (stopping at each spot). With Therapy Brewing added to the mix it comes out to 41 minutes. You can see a map of these breweries – including the new Jackass Brewery – here:

Jackass Brewing Company

Jackass Brewery opened in March of 2020. Started by home brewers Larry Winans and Skip Kratzer. They quickly became a popular destination spot in Lewisburg PA. Their spot in Lewisburg is a 7 BBL brewery.

The following comes from Untappd:

Jackass Brewing Company is a micro brewery from Lewisburg, PA. They have 97 unique beers and over 12,000 ratings for a global average rating of 3.7 (as of 11.13.23). Their Untappd description is blank.

Keystone State Of Mind – New Trail Brewing Company and Other Half Brewing Company’s Newest Collaboration https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/10/25/keystone-state-of-mind-new-trail-brewing-company-and-other-half-brewing-companys-newest-collaboration/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=keystone-state-of-mind-new-trail-brewing-company-and-other-half-brewing-companys-newest-collaboration Wed, 25 Oct 2023 14:19:58 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=12825

A (Keystone) State of Mind

In a bit of a twist of the Billy Joel Song – “New York State of Mind” – New Trail Brewing Company and Other Half Brewing Company are releasing their newest collaboration together – Keystone State of Mind.

They previously worked together on “Pennsylvania Nights”; a wonderful and fantastic New England Hazy IPA.

And here they are – back at it together – releasing another New England Hazy IPA collaboration: Keystone State of Mind.

Keystone State of Mind

Keystone State of Mind is a collaboration between New Trail Brewing Company and Other Half Brewing Company. Other Half is one of the preeminent New England Hazy IPA makers on the East Coast; and New Trail is one of the haziest IPA makers in Pennsylvania. Other Half recently moved into PA adding another brewery to their collection.

So it seems like a perfect fit for the two of them to collaborate on making (another) New England Hazy IPA.

Keystone State of Mind clocks in at 8.7% ABV, is considered a Double New England Hazy IPA, and has no IBU listed. The malt bill is Pilsner, Oats, and White Wheat – which gives it that typical, perfect, soft, cloud like hazy mouthfeel. Each can is overflowing with hops – Motueka, Simcoe, Nectaron, and Nelson Sauvin; so a total hop bomb. This gives it notes of gummy peach rings, Pinot aromatics, and dank tropicals.

The beer is already available throughout the states, with some beer distributors already having it on their shelves (and not for long if its anything like the Pennsylvania Nights release). You can also find it at New Trail’s Brewery location in both 16 oz cans and on draft. Other Half’s Philadelphia location also has it in cans and on draft. The release should follow the New Trail distribution pattern and footprint, not Other Half’s. Other Half’s non-Pennsylvania locations will not have it available.

Billy Joel’s “Keystone State of Mind”

(Lyrics edited)

Some folks like to get away
Take a holiday from the neighbourhood
Hop a flight to Miami Beach
Or to Hollywood
But I’m taking a Greyhound
On the Delaware River Line
I’m in a Keystone state of mind

I’ve seen all the movie stars
In their fancy cars and their limousines
Been high in the Rockies under the evergreens
But I know what I’m needing
And I don’t want to waste more time
I’m in a Keystone state of mind

It was so easy living day by day
Out of touch with the rhythm and blues
But now I need a little give and take
The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Patriot News,

It comes down to reality
And it’s fine with me ’cause I’ve let it slide
Don’t care if it’s Chinatown or up on Riverside
I don’t have any reasons
I’ve left them all behind
I’m in a Keystone state of mind

It was so easy living day by day
Out of touch with the rhythm and blues
But now I need a little give and take
The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Patriot News

It comes down to reality
And it’s fine with me ’cause I’ve let it slide
Don’t care if it’s Chinatown or up on Riverside
I don’t have any reasons
I’ve left them all behind
I’m in a Keystone state of mind

I’m just taking a Greyhound on the Delaware River Line
‘Cause I’m in a Keystone state of mind

We are working on a massive project here at The Beer Thrillers. We are creating a map of all of the breweries across the United States. State by state we are adding maps of all of the different states with every brewery in each state. (We will eventually get to the US Territories, as well as the Canadian Provinces, and possibly more countries; as well as doing some fun maps like a map of all the breweries we’ve been to, and other fun maps.) You can find the brewery maps here:

We are also working on a project of creating printable and downloadable PDFs and resources to be able to check and keep track of all of the breweries you’ve been to. So stay tuned for that project once we are finished with the Brewery Maps of the US States.

Cushwa Brewing Company 5th Anniversary Celebration https://thebeerthrillers.com/2022/01/17/cushwa-brewing-company-5th-anniversary-celebration/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=cushwa-brewing-company-5th-anniversary-celebration Tue, 18 Jan 2022 03:25:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=8562
Cushwa Brewing Company 5 Year Anniversary Celebration

Five Days Away

We are five days away from the five year celebration. So its a perfect time to run it down and get hyped about it. Sadly, the VIP and the general admission tickets have been sold out (for quite some time), but for those of us able to go (myself and writer friend) it will certainly be an event not to be missed. The first brew fest of the year (for us anyway) and we can’t wait for it!

This one certainly looks like a doozy and one that will be remembered for quite some time.

Let’s take a look at the brewery’s Facebook photos as a gallery to get an idea:

What the Event Is

Cushwa 5 Year Celebration Event

Firstly, as you can see – the VIP and General Admission are both sold out. You might be able to find tickets second hand online, but be very cautious of scammers. Cushwa has posted on their photos page that they have caught some people selling fake or scammed up tickets.

The VIP session is 75$ and lasts from 12 – 5, (giving the attendee an extra hour), as well as a second glass and a specialty bottle. The bottle alone really makes the extra 25$ worth value right there, but add in the perks of an extra hour of drinking, plus a second glass, and its definitely worth it.

The general admission is from 1 – 5, comes with a commemorative taster glass (like most brewfests do), and allows unlimited sampling. For both sessions there is over 50 breweries, which we will get to in just a bit.

There is also DD (designated driver / aka ‘non drinking buddy’) access to the event as well for just 5$.

Who All is Invited

So, this is one hell of a list of breweries that is coming and serving up liquid gold for everyone. With many stand – outs.

The full list of breweries include:

  • Adroit Theory
  • Amani Brothers
  • Aslin Brewing
  • Barrel Culture
  • Bearded Iris
  • Black Flag Brewing
  • Bluejacket Brewing
  • Branch and Blade
  • Burnish Beer Co
  • Charles Towne Fermentory
  • Commonwealth Brewing
  • Crooked Crab
  • Crooked Run Fermentation
  • Dancing Gnome
  • Definitive Brewing
  • Deciduous Brewing
  • Dewey Beer Co
  • Divine Barrel
  • Ever Grain Brewing Co
  • Finback Brewing
  • Fourscore Beer Co
  • Good Word
  • Graft
  • Heavy Reel
  • Heist Brewing
  • Homaide Brewing
  • Imprint Beer Co
  • Inu Island
  • Kings
  • Mortallis
  • Mountains Walking
  • Ocelot Brewing
  • Odd by Nature
  • Oozlefinch
  • Other Half Brewing
  • Prototype Brewing
  • RAR Brewing
  • Resident Culture
  • Sapwood Cellars
  • Schilling
  • Sojourn
  • Southern Grist
  • Suffolk Punch
  • Thin Man Brewing
  • Triple Crossing
  • Troegs Independent Craft Brewing
  • Untold
  • Vitamin Sea
  • Wet City
  • Widowmaker
  • Beer Zombies
  • The Maryland Mob

Woooooooheeeeeeeeeeeee!!! Thats a line up! Some stand out favorites and interests are definitely Adroit Theory, Barrel Culture, Bearded Iris, Deciduous, Dewey Beer Co, Finback, Fourscore, Good Word, Mortallis, Ocelot, Oozlefinch, Other Half, RAR, Southern Grist, Triple Crossing, and Vitamin Sea.

But you certainly can’t go wrong with any from that list! Its a nice combination of Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, and Pennsylvania breweries, as well as some other heavy hitters thrown into the mix.

Food

Food Vendors

The food options are:

  • Food For Thought
  • The Highroller Lobster Co.
  • Rad Pies

So there is some variety and enough food choices to be had for the four or five hour sessions. (If you see me veering for the lobster in a drunken haze, just kick me away so I don’t trigger my shellfish allergies. Thanks!)

Anything Else Fun?

There will also be a DJ on hand – DJ Bizzy, and just recently announced Thicc Bois Glass will also be on hand selling some dope hand blown glassware. They’ve worked with Tattered Flag and a few other breweries in the past to make some really fantastic glassware.

Pumped

Are you pumped? Are you going? I’m pumped. I have finally gotten my days changed at work – and now have off Friday and Saturday (rather than Thursday and Friday); only took me 10 years of working at the casino, to finally get up to having off a weekend day. I also put in a special request and got the Sunday off for travel home.

With the can release for Burley Oak the day before (Friday – Jan. 21st), we are looking to make this quite a trip. Coming down from the Hummelstown area to get to Burley Oak, and then make our way over towards Cushwa (a bit over three hours across Maryland, after driving three hours to Burley Oak), we will be stopping and hitting some fabulous breweries on the way. Then spending the night in the Williamsport area, before stopping by Antietam and maybe Monocacy Battlefields (again), and a few more breweries before making our way back home up into Pennsylvania.

Be sure to check out our travelogues and travel stories here on the blog for many of our wacky adventures through the Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania and Virginia states that we’ve had the recent months. Also, be sure to check out the following Cushwa articles:

Thanks For Reading

Will you be attending? Know anyone who is? Thoughts on the brewfest or the line up of breweries? Let us know in the comments or on our various social media platforms! Can’t wait to hear from you!

(Also, be sure to stay tuned for a special ‘cold’ beer review tomorrow, and another Star Wars beer review on Wednesday, which will likewise be a ‘cold’ beer review.)

Cheers!

Beer Review: Broken Heels (New Trail Brewing Co.) https://thebeerthrillers.com/2019/11/10/beer-review-broken-heels-new-trail-brewing-co/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=beer-review-broken-heels-new-trail-brewing-co Sun, 10 Nov 2019 15:39:06 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=1244
Broken Heels by NewTrail Brewing Co. (on-draft at The Manor Restaurant and Lounge)

Keeping the streak alive, much like the Philadelphia Flyers are currently doing (are they possibly good this year? Is Carter Hart the future of goaltending in Philadelphia? am I losing my mind? The answer might be yes to all three of those questions by the way), I have managed to continue writing – and often – and keeping it going into today with this being the 10th blog in 10 days. I have also kept the streak going with a new beer each day. (And since its 9AM on a work-day…. I have not yet had my new beer today, sorry to disappoint, but I will as soon as work is over, I promise that.)

Friday’s new beer, and the topic of today’s review is: Broken Heels by New Trail Brewing Co. For anyone who has been following the Breweries in PA Facebook group or page will know, New Trails is the “hot new” “it” brewery in Pennsylvania currently. Along with Imprint Beer, they are the most talked about brewery in Pennsylvania in that group. And I’m not going to flip the script here and say their wrong, its for good reason.

Just taking a look at their Untappd page, their top ten beers are (as per how Untappd has them listed on the side-bar of their Untappd page) :
1) Broken Heels – IPA – American – 3.95
2) Shades – IPA – Imperial Double / New England – 4.19
3) Neither Here Nor There – IPA – Imperial Double / New England – 4.16
4) W.E.S.P – IPA – Imperial Double / New England – 4.11
5) No Brakes – IPA – Imperial Double / New England – 3.99
6) SOB Hill IPA – IPA – American – 3.78
7) Bonfire – IPA – Imperial Double / New England – 4.16
8) Strawberry Haze – IPA – New England – 3.75
9) Broken Paddle – IPA – New England – 4.00
10) Rained Out – IPA – Imperial Double / New England – 4.01

Notice a theme here at all? …..I think I have…..

I did one other review of them before, and it was part of a flight I had at the Hershey Biergarten; I had their Dark Skies: Corvus – a Schwarzbier. It was an exceptional beer. So make sure you check out that review as well, and check out that beer too if you like dark style beers – which isn’t what they are primarily known for (seeing as how the list above is all IPAs or Double IPAs), but I still highly recommend it.

New Trails Brewing Co. has their base and brewery in Williamsport Pennsylvania. They currently have 117 unique beers with a total global rating of 3.97. Their Untappd page description reads: ” We love the outdoors and we love beer. At New Trail Brewing we encourage our friends and neighbors to spend more quality time outdoors experiencing the natural environment around us. We are woodsy types – hikers and bikers, paddlers and kayakers, birdwatchers and stargazers. We are beer enthusiasts. We love beer, and we believe great beer makes life’s experiences taste even better. That’s why we started New Trail Brewing Company, to make great beer for everyone to enjoy when you dare to explore new places, do new things, take new trails, and have truly memorable adventures. We preserve the great outdoors and enhance the experience of getting out there. New trail brewing company is committed to preserving the wild wonders of Pennsylvania. We connect with a wide range of people and organizations in our area dedicated to elevating the quality of, and access to, our region’s outdoor resources, including local trails, PA Trail Dogs and more. Our brewery culture seeks to facilitate meaningful relationships between our neighbors and our natural heritage. We feel there is a creative connection between nature and beer. That’s why we brew fresh, great tasting, locally made beer for people active in outdoor recreation, and why we strive to manage our beer making process to have the least impact on our resources. We want to help people get out in the natural universe. It’s good for them, for our community and for the outdoors. We hope you’ll join us.

Broken Heels by New Trail Brewing Co.

Beer: Broken Heels
Brewery: New Trail Brewing Co.
Style: IPA – American
ABV: 7%
IBU: None
Untappd Write-Up: Broken Heels is a “Hazy” India Pale Ale. Brewed with oats and pilsner malts and hopped aggressively with an assortment of newer American grown hops in the Pacific Northwest. This beer has a full mouthfeel with low bitterness meant to be soft on the palette. High aromatics lead the consumer through a treasure trove of their favorite tropical fruits and wanting more of the very quaffable beer.

Appearance from draft pour is straight orange juice. Pictures from can looks the exact same way as well. Which is always a good indicator of quality and consistency. A draft pour shouldn’t look too much different than a pour from a can or a bottle (assuming the cans and bottles were handled properly and stored properly). Its hazy, unfiltered, glowing orange, with a small ring of head at the top that dissipates quickly, but as you drink this down it leaves a wonderful lacing.

Aroma is citrusy and fruity hops. Its not a complete hop bomb but you get a very aromatic fruity and citrus hop aroma as soon as its set-down in front of you. It smells like a clear crisp IPA should.

This is like drinking hoppy juicy dank orange juice. It is so full of citrus fruit juicy hop taste and is just so easy to drink. You get a flourish of hop notes as soon as you start sipping, you get citrus, you get the tropical fruits, you get practically no bitterness, you just get a smooth drink. The pilsner malts and the flaked oats gives this a really smooth and tasty brew and just makes it like a wonderful NEIPA that drinks easy. After one sip of this you can quickly see why New Trails Brewing Co. is known for their outstanding IPAs.

My Untappd Rating: ****.25
Global Untappd Rating: 3.95 (as of 11.10.19)

Ten days down, ten blog posts down. One third of the way there! Only twenty more to go! This is flying by and is easy breezy! (….sort of.)

Ok folks, check back in tomorrow for the next one! Cheers!
