Some Craft Beers to Drink Instead of Guinness on St. Patrick’s Day https://thebeerthrillers.com/2024/03/14/some-craft-beers-to-drink-instead-of-guinness-on-st-patricks-day/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=some-craft-beers-to-drink-instead-of-guinness-on-st-patricks-day Thu, 14 Mar 2024 14:30:33 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=14574

Some St. Patrick’s Day Alternatives

St. Patrick’s Day

As many of you know Sunday is St. Patrick’s Day. Its also the last day to vote in the Conference Round of 16 in our Battle of the Breweries (March Madness) tournament. Its also the day four years ago we were all just going to take a “short break” from our jobs to help flatten the curves….. but thats a rabbit hole we’re not going down today. Instead, we’re going to go down a rabbit hole of craft beers we can try INSTEAD of Guinness.

No green beer here. No Guinness here. Just craft beer alternatives to try out instead of Guiness on St. Patrick’s Day.

Craft Beers to Try Instead of Guinness

Here is a list (some with pictures and text, some just the names of the beers) of craft beers to try this year instead of your typical Guinness Draught or Irish Car Bomb.

Troegs Independent Brewing: Scratch 509

Scratch 509: Irish Dry Stout on Nitro

Just released today (Thursday, March 14th, 2024). This is Scratch 509 by Troegs Independent Brewing.

Its a small (only sixtels in house, not even full kegs) R & D batch on the Troegs Scratch Pilot system.

Not to go, and not sold in cans or bottles, this is draft only in their tasting room. Super limited, so hopefully it will at least make it til St. Patrick’s Day! Its a delicious Nitro Irish Dry Stout in the vein of Guinness.

Its clocking in at just 4.2% ABV so you can easily go back up to the bar for a second… and a third… and a fourth.

Boneshire Brew Works: Grattan Irish Stout

Grattan Irish Stout by Boneshire Brew Works

One of my personal favorites from Boneshire Brew Works (though to be honest, I say that about nearly all of their beers there), this is a perfect replacement for Guinness.

“This stout is traditionally dry and super drinkable. Beware of the Leprechaun while drinking this one.”

Similar to the Scratch 509 above, and similar to Guinness itself, this Dry Irish Stout clocks in at just 4.5% making it easy to drink, leaving you full in taste and flavor, but not full of the ABV or drunk.

Sold in cans to go or at their brewery (where its also on in Nitro) this is easily one of the best ways to replace Guinness, especially this Sunday.

Wallenpaupack Brewing: O’Days

O’Days by Wallenpaupack Brewing

Can’t go wrong with Wallenpaupack Brewing, and their O’Days is a great choice for a Guinness replacement.

Acclamation Brewing: The Pooka

The Pooka by Acclamation Brewing

Acclamation Brewing just moved to their new location (see our article here: ACCLAMATION BREWING MOVING TO NEW LOCATION). So stop by their new spot and grab yourself a pint of The Pooka.

We got to visit Acclamation in 2022 and absolutely had a blast, great service, delicious beers, wonderful can and label artwork. All around great people. So give them a visit!

Stable 12: Murphy’s Law

Murphy’s Law by Stable 12

My grandfather had a saying: “If it can go wrong — it will.” The inspiration for this being the Law of Murphy, or Murphy’s Law. In which: Murphy’s law is an adage or epigram that is typically stated as: “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.” In some formulations, it is extended to “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong, and at the worst possible time.” (Wikipedia) I think anyone who has kids, or is a home owner, or has a favorite sports team can attest to this – if something can go wrong – it will. So what better way to relieve the pains of things going horribly awry than with a delicious beer, like “Murphy’s Law” by Stable 12 Brewing Company.

Second Sin Brewing: Double O Stout: Quantum of Stoutness

Second Sin Brewing’s Double O Stout: Quantum of Stoutness

Second Sin Brewing Company is constantly recognized for knocking it out of the park. Or hitting one over the rainbow, and they do it again with their Double O Stout: Quantum of Stoutness. (Gotta love the James Bond reference there too). Clocking in at 4.6% its that perfect spot for Irish Dry Stouts (see Boneshire Brew Work’s Grattan Irish Stout, and Troegs Independent Brewing’s Scratch 509, as well as Guinness itself). Their Untappd description reads: “Double O Stout is our rendition of the Classic Irish Dry Stout style. It pours a pitch black color, with hints of ruby at the edges, and a light khaki head up top. Notes of black coffee, baker’s chocolate, and almost too-well-done toast are pulled together by a tight, dry finish. Sláinte!”

Appalachian Brewing Company: Celtic Knot

ABC’s Celtic Knot

A classic – Appalachian Brewing Company (ABC)’s Celtic Knot is a wonderful choice on St. Patrick’s Day (or any other day for that matter).

Some More Fantastic Beers

Here is a list of some other breweries and their Irish Stouts or Dry Irish Stouts, or even just Irish themed beers that would make a great replacement for Guinness on St. Patrick’s Day this Sunday:

Lasting into at least 2026, this partnership with Wallenpaupack Brewing Company adds to a recent focus on local purveyors that have been added to the venue’s concourse joining Empanada King, Revello’s Old Forge Pizza, Boozy B’s and Malacari’s Ice Cream & Wine. Also, Wallenpaupack Brewing Company just wrapped up year one of their four – year partnership with PNC Field and the Scranton / Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, showcasing a trend in concentration on local products being available at performing arts and sporting venues.

Commitment is one of the key components of Wallenpaupack’s business, to their guests, to their community, and to their product.

We are committed to providing our guests with a diverse menu featuring local flavors and bringing the menus of some hometown establishments to our audience that stretches beyond the Wyoming Valley. As we begin our 25th event season, we are thrilled to partner with Wallenpaupack Brewing Company to provide their diverse lineup of locally crafted beers to our customers year-round.

Stephen Poremba – General Manager of the ASM Global managed Mohegan Sun Arena

Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguin Games

The Wallenpaupack beers will found at all of the home Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguin games, as well as the full slate of concerts, comedies, and other performances at the Mohegan Sun Arena.

Its so great to see breweries supporting their local communities and helping the local smaller franchises and minor teams, like the way Ever Grain Brewing supports the Hershey Bears (Hershey Bears and Ever Grain Brewing Team Up to Create Bear Claw Pale Lager), as well as ZeroDay Brewing, Desperate Times Brewing, and several others supporting the Harrisburg Senators on City Island.

From the entire home slate of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins home games to the ever growing schedule of concerts and other unique performances that are on the calendar, we are privileged to have our beers be part of these events and help add some local flavor to the global talent that will be entertaining our community. We are beyond thrilled and energized to make this partnership a special one for years to come.

You can find the brewery maps here:

We are also working on a project of creating printable and downloadable PDFs and resources to be able to check and keep track of all of the breweries you’ve been to. So stay tuned for that project once we are finished with the Brewery Maps of the US States.

2020 GABF Winners: Pennsylvania https://thebeerthrillers.com/2020/10/18/2020-gabf-winners-pennsylvania/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=2020-gabf-winners-pennsylvania Mon, 19 Oct 2020 01:53:48 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=4768
Great American Beer Festival Medals

2020 has been a challenging year (to say the least) for all kinds of events, conventions, brew fests, and other large beer related activities. Hell, Oktoberfest in Germany was cancelled this year. That alone should tell you everything you need to know about this year right there.

So the 2020 edition of GABF was not the normal (great) event it normally is. This year it went virtual (due to the pandemic) rather than being the fantastic event that brings in thousands of people and millions of gallons of beer to Colorado.

This was a rather lackluster year for awards in Pennsylvania as well. Sadly; this year, Pennsylvania only won three awards. One gold, and two silvers. Contrast that to last year’s seven awards won by Pennsylvania breweries (three gold, three silver, and one bronze). Hopefully 2021 will be a better year for Pennsylvania breweries (and not just in medalling at the GABF).

The results for Pennsylvania are below:

Great American Beer Festival GOLD

GOLD:

Category: Gluten-Free Beer
Brewery: Aurochs Brewing
Beer: Aurochs Hazy IPA

Great American Beer Festival SILVER

SILVER:

Category: English Mild or Bitter
Brewery: Wallenpaupack Brewing
Beer: English Pale Mild Ale

Category: English-Style Brown Ale
Brewery: Attic Brewing
Beer: Bloodhound Brown Ale

In 2019, Pennsylvania breweries that won included: New Trail Brewing Co, The Church Brew Works, 2SP Brewing, Free Will Brewing, Cellar Works Brewing, Swashbuckler Brewing Co, and Helltown Brewing Company.

You can read about the 2019 results here: 2019 GABF Winners: Pennsylvania.

For more information on the winners, of all of the different categories, you can read the Brewers Association press release on it, with a detailed analysis at the following link: Winners of 2020 Great American Beer Festival (Brewer’s Association Press). 272 medals were decided for 240 different breweries this year, which was the 34th edition of the event.

“Judges for the 34th edition of the celebrated competition evaluated 8,806 entries from 1,720 breweries from all 50 states plus Washington, D.C. Socially distanced judging took place in 35 sessions over 18 days with strict safety measures in place. The awards ceremony was held virtually on Friday evening, kicking off the two-day online programming portion of the Great American Beer Festival.

“This year’s GABF competition may have looked a little different, but the beers entered into the competition were as impressive and innovative as ever,” said Chris Swersey, competition manager, Great American Beer Festival. “This has arguably been one of the most challenging years breweries have ever faced, so we hope these awards serve as a symbol not only of brewing excellence but also the resiliency of the craft brewing community as a whole.” (Brewer’s Association)

As per the above article, a quick run-down of statistics from the 2020 GABF Event:

GABF Competition Statistics

  • 34th edition of the GABF competition
  • 8,806 beers judged
  • 1,720 breweries in the competition from all 50 states plus Washington, D.C.
  • 115 judges from 21 states
  • Average number of competition beers entered in each category: 97
  • Category with the highest number of entries: Juicy or Hazy India Pale Ale (377)
  • 272 total medals awarded
  • 240 medal-winning breweries
  • 337 first-time GABF entrants
  • 19 first-time GABF winners

Sun King Brewery in Indianapolis, Indiana, won the most awards at this year’s event with 4 awards total. (One gold, and three bronzes.) In November, I am making a road trip out of Pennsylvania and through Western PA, Ohio, and into Indianapolis to visit the Vonnegut Museum and Library. I can definitely tell you that Sun King Brewery will be a stop for me at some point on that trip (they’ve been on my radar for quite a bit).

Cheers and here’s to hoping that 2021 is a much better year for our home state breweries in Pennsylvania. Let me know in the comments if you’ve tried any of the 2020 award winning beers. And check out the full article and let us know what you think of the results from around the country.
