Human Robot Beer is shutting down their Schuykill Banks location (on May 31st) and are opening new (two to be exact) taphouses. Crime and Punishment just recently closed and it looks like the vacancy will quickly be filled by Human Robot Beer. Human Robot Brewery will move its Schuylkill Banks tasting room to the recently vacated space of Crime and Punishment Brewing Co. at 2711 W. Girard Ave. in Brewerytown. Human Robot also has plans to open a new spot in New Hope, Bucks County.

We are truly honored to uphold the legacy established by Mike P, Wambs, and their amazing team over the last decade. One of our very first “meetings” took place in this space, and it holds a special place in our hearts. We cherish the memories we’ve made there over so many exceptional beers and look forward to creating even more with all of you. Our hope is to get it reopened as soon as possible. Our buddy Poe will be joining us as well, follow @poessidepiece and please follow our new social for updates!

@doublesNH is our new concept in New Hope, PA located at 12 W. Mechanic St. This will be a slightly different spin on what we have traditionally done. For one, we are bringing in a partner, @keithashore , to help with design and art and some special extras to be announced. This is being built from the ground up, so it will take a little longer, but look for us hopefully come July. Again, follow the socials there and we will update when we can!

Crime and Punishment’s Brewery

Human Robot Brewery is making major moves in 2025, relocating its Schuylkill Banks tasting room to Brewerytown and launching a new concept in New Hope. Here’s what beer lovers need to know about these exciting changes.

Human Robot Brewery Takes Over Crime & Punishment’s Former Space

Human Robot Brewery will soon be calling 2711 W. Girard Avenue in Brewerytown its new home. This location, previously occupied by Crime & Punishment Brewing Co. for a decade, will become Human Robot Girard, replacing the brewery’s current Schuylkill Banks outpost, which will close on May 31, 2025. The move comes after Human Robot finalized a $760,000 purchase of the building, although the deal did not include Crime & Punishment’s business or brewing licenses.

The new taproom will retain much of the character and furnishings of Crime & Punishment, with only the brewing equipment being removed to make way for additional seating. Outdoor seating will also be available, and all former Crime & Punishment staff have been offered positions at the new Human Robot location.

What to Expect at Human Robot Girard

Patrons can look forward to the brewery’s signature lagers, pilsners, and innovative brews, including the popular Milktube pours. The food menu will feature sandwiches from Poe’s Side Piece, an offshoot of Poe’s Sandwich Joint, which is already a staple at Human Robot’s flagship in West Kensington. The brewery aims to honor the legacy of Crime & Punishment while bringing its own unique flair to the neighborhood.

Expansion Continues: New Hope Location Set for Summer

In addition to its Brewerytown plans, Human Robot is preparing to open a new tasting room called Doubles at 12 W. Mechanic Street in New Hope, marking its first venture into Bucks County. This ground-up project is expected to debut in July 2025 and will offer a slightly different experience compared to the brewery’s other locations. The New Hope outpost will bring the total number of Human Robot locations to five, including existing taprooms in Kensington, Jenkintown, and East Passyunk.

Human Robot’s Growth and Legacy

Founded in 2020 by Ken Correll, Chris Roller, and Jake Atkinson, Human Robot Brewery has quickly become a Philadelphia favorite, known for its experimental approach and dedication to quality. Head brewer Andrew Foss has helped popularize the use of Czech Lukr faucets, renowned for producing a thick, creamy foam on their beers.

The End of an Era for Crime & Punishment

Crime & Punishment Brewing Co., established in 2015, became a beloved fixture in Brewerytown, crafting nearly 500 unique beers over its ten-year run. The brewery closed its doors in April 2025, leaving behind a legacy of community and creativity that Human Robot aims to honor as it steps into the space.

With these strategic expansions, Human Robot Brewery continues to cement its reputation as one of Philadelphia’s most dynamic craft beer brands, promising new experiences for fans in both Brewerytown and New Hope.

Breckenridge Brewing Company Opens Third Taproom

Breckenridge Brewery, one of Colorado’s pioneering craft beer makers, is set to begin a new chapter this August by moving into the vibrant Fort Collins beer scene. Now owned by global cannabis company Tilray, the brewery will take over and rebrand the taproom currently operated by Sweetwater Brewing at 1020 E. Lincoln Ave. Tilray, which also owns Sweetwater, Green Flash Brewing, Alpine, Blue Point, and others, announced that the transition will occur on August 17, with a celebration featuring live music and giveaways.

Tilray explained to The Denver Post, “Considering Breck Brew’s deep-rooted history in Colorado and its connections to the local craft beer community, we, along with Sweetwater Brewing, have decided that Breckenridge Brewery should take over the East Lincoln Avenue taproom this August. Sweetwater has had a successful run in Fort Collins for the past 2.5 years, but we believe it’s fitting for an iconic Colorado brand like Breckenridge Brewery to make its mark in Fort Collins, a city known for its renowned craft breweries.”

Sweetwater Brewing will hand over its Fort Collins taproom to Breckenridge Brewery but will continue operating its 12-acre brewing campus, restaurant, and taproom in Littleton, as well as a small brewpub in Breckenridge.

Breckenridge Brewery’s “Culture Czar,” Todd Thibault, who has been with the company for nearly 30 years, noted, “After exploring various markets across the U.S., we’ve found that Colorado is where we truly belong.” Breckenridge is celebrated for its Avalanche Amber Ale, Juice Drop Hazy IPA, and Palisade Peach Wheat.

Though the switch from Sweetwater to Breckenridge is a recent development, Thibault assured that the brewery will retain all existing staff and brewers, with no need for a closure or major renovations. “If executed correctly, the transition will be seamless and happen overnight.”

The restaurant will continue to offer most of its current menu, with only minor adjustments, while the taproom will still serve a selection of Sweetwater, Alpine, and Green Flash beers brewed on-site.

Sweetwater Brewing, originally founded in Georgia in 1997, began operating at the Fort Collins location in 2021 to expand its presence in the western U.S. It took over the facility from Red Truck Brewing, a Canadian brewery that lasted only four years. Red Truck had previously acquired Fort Collins Brewing in 2017 at the same address.

Breckenridge Brewery, established in Breckenridge in 1990, relocated its headquarters to Denver before moving to its current Littleton campus in 2015. Shortly after, it was acquired by Anheuser Busch InBev, which sold it along with several other brands to Tilray in 2023.

Fort Collins is a celebrated hub of craft beer in Colorado, home to independently owned Odell Brewing, established in 1989, and New Belgium Brewing, known for Fat Tire, which began in 1991 and is now owned by Japanese conglomerate Kirin. The city also boasts over 22 other craft breweries and taprooms, including Funkwerks, Coopersmith’s, Horse & Dragon, Zwei, Purpose, and Hello Brew.

Thibault expressed enthusiasm about joining Fort Collins’ esteemed list of breweries, saying, “You could spend a month exploring all the breweries in Fort Collins. We’re thrilled to add Breckenridge’s name to this illustrious lineup.”

Rubber Soul Brewing to Open New Taproom Saturday

This Saturday – June 22nd, 2024, Rubber Soul Brewing is set to open their brand new taproom on North Hanover Street, in Hummelstown PA.

After quite a while building the brand new building (and not without some town controversy) the opening is right around the corner. The new taproom will also host their brewery in the lower level (visible from the giant parking lot). Their original location will now just be a full restaurant and taproom. (See: A Sneak Peek at Rubber Soul Brewery.)

Original Location

Rubber Soul Brewing was originally intending to open their first location in Hummelstown around March of 2020, but with the pandemic, things got pushed back, and they finally held their grand opening in October of 2020. Their current location is in the old Hummelstown Police and Borough Building, located at 136 S Hanover St, Hummelstown, PA 17036.

The current plan for the original location is that they have removed the brewing production from the location to their new brewery facility and taproom, and extending the seating and restaurant.

New Location

The new location is located at 17 N Hanover St, Hummelstown, PA 17036, just 0.3 miles north of their current taproom (on the same street). The new facility took over an old warehouse that formerly sat on the property, as well as Maritza’s House of Style, which they had removed for extra parking. The new taproom has their brewing facility on the lower level, and the upper level features a deck and patio area that faces the 7-11 across the street and some abandoned buildings / businesses.

Hummelstown is currently in the midst of a big tourism push, including the mayor, the governor, and other officials and board members (some of which are involved with Rubber Soul Brewing). At a town meeting where they got permission to bulldoze the Maritza House of Style (despite having full ownership technically as per law at the time), Rubber Soul Brewing stated that their parking lot would be usable by the public for events in town including the parades, carnivals, as well as parking for other Main Street square activities (2nd Friday’s, Memorial Day, etc.)

The old warehouse which was removed was listed as 17 North Hanover Street. As per their Facebook post their brewery’s address will be “21 North Hanover Street”.
Rubber Soul Brewing Company was originally a brewery located in Salisbury Maryland. They were bought and are now owned by Ghost Brewing LLC. They were bought whole-stock, meaning the equipment, recipes, and social media passcodes and usage were all part of their purchase.

Grist House Brewery Will Be Taking Over the Taproom at Freedom Farms Farmers Market

As we noted at the end of 2023, North Country Brewing Company is closing their taproom – the Corn Crib – at Freedom Farms Farmers Market. Their last day operating the Corn Crib will be on February 29th, 2024. Well we learned today who will be taking over that spot, and its going to be Grist House Craft Brewery. The Freedom Farms Farmers Market is located at 795 Pittsburgh Rd, Butler, PA 16002.

Grist House Craft Brewery, from Millvale, is opening a new taproom in Butler, PA at the Freedom Farms Farmers Market on Route 8. They are dubbing it the “Grist House Beer Crib”.

The tap room will open in March, possibly early March. North Country Brewing’s “Corn Crib” will be operating its last day on February 29th, and the new “Grist House Beer Crib” can then soon take over. Grist House Craft Brewery will be bringing their extensive tap list to the location, and will be using the existing indoor space as well as outdoor space at the venue.

Pittsburgh, PA, February 9th, 2024-Grist House Craft Brewery, currently based in Millvale is bringing their beer north by opening a new taproom location in Butler, PA at the Freedom Farms Farmers Market located on Route 8. The taproom will officially open for business in early March and will offer customers an extensive tap list of Grist House beers, a unique indoor space, and a large outdoor area to enjoy. This location will bring a new Grist House experience to the Butler County community.
The space formerly known as the Corn Crib will be rebranded as the Grist House Beer Crib. Along with the taproom, the building is also home to Freedom Farms Farm-to-Fork Kitchen and the Freedom Farm Farmers Market.
Freedom Farms is an evolving family business of local farmers, bakers, and chefs, working together to provide the highest quality food in western PA. While farming continues to be a tradition and profession of the King family, they never fail to innovate and look to the future. Our Town Brewery Taproom in Philadelphia Set to Open

Our Town Brewery’s new taproom is Philadelphia is set to have their soft opening this weekend – Saturday and Sunday, the 3rd and 4th of February, 2024. They took to their social media today to make the announcement of their upcoming soft opening:

In April of 2023 we broke the news here on the blog of their opening in Philadelphia – Our Town Brewery Expanding to Philadelphia, and in less than a year they are ready for their opening. First with the soft opening this weekend – February 3rd and 4th 2024; followed by their Grand Opening on Friday February 8th, 2024.

Currently Our Town Brewery is located in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. This additional taproom will be located at 1519 Ridge Avenue, Philadelphia.

Inside Our Town Brewery’s New Taproom

The new location at 1519 Ridge Avenue, Philadelphia will be a taproom only, meaning they won’t be producing any beer at this location. Their production will still be at the original location and brewery in Lancaster, PA. Our Town Brewery’s location will have a square footprint of 1,700 but the taproom will be 1,100 square feet. The bar – central to the location (directly upfront) will be 16 feet long (and able to seat 8), and then there will be tables dispersed throughout the taproom. The estimated seating will be 40 – 45 people. The bar itself will consist of 16 taps, including two beloved Lukr taps. They will serve outside cider and cocktails as well, befitting a PA Brewery’s License.

There is a front sidewalk and a 600 foot backyard – beer garden. These two areas will be able to seat an additional 20 people (estimated). Currently nearby is a dog park, and they will see if there is a way to be able to take their beer over to the dog park for those who wish to bring their furry friends out for a drink.

In what they are calling a “not so secret secret” Truth Beer Company has announced that they will be opening a taproom in Lancaster.

If the above image or address looks familiar – you probably recognize it as a place you might have enjoyed a brew in before. The former home of Cartel Brewing and Blending. Who have recently moved into their new brewery. (See our article: Cartel Brewing and Blending Moving and our other article Cartel Brewing and Blending Grand Opening at Their New Location).

We covered Truth Beer Company opening back in late August (on my birthday actually), and that they would be opening on September 3rd. (You can see that article here: Truth Beer Company Grand Opening – September 3rd.)

The location for their new taproom is 928 N. Prince St., Lancaster PA 17603.

n what has become a very poorly kept secret, Truth Beer Co is coming to Lancaster! We will be opening up our new taproom space at 928 N. Prince St, a building that may look familiar to some of you. More info on when our grand opening will happen TBA, stay tuned! 🍻🍻🍻

The following comes from Untappd. Truth Beer Company is a nano brewery out of Akron, PA. They have 25 unique beers and 1,871 ratings (as of 12.5.23). Their global Untappd rating is 3.81 (again – as of 12.5.23). Their Untappd description reads: Truth’s brewery and tasting room was opened in September of 2022 by co-owners/operators (and friends since childhood) Ryan and Dave. They focus on hop-forward styles, and innovating with new methods or ingredients. Come on down the hill in Akron to check them out!

To little or no fanfare, the latest brewery, and another to Hummelstown, opened on October 9th, 2020 (yesterday). They had posted on their Facebook page their permit and that they would be opening soon, but, to my surprise, I had seen no notice of their actual opening date.

Their last Facebook post was on September 28th, and with the above picture, it stated:

“A temporary permit was given to me to open my taproom this morning. Shooting for October 9th for the grand opening of Howling Henry’s Taproom. Check my website for more information.”

I had seen this notice and post and re-shared it on our Facebook page, but for some reason, the little notice of “shooting for October 9th” I overlooked. I unfortunately, despite having my day off was out of town with friends (we went to Wellsboro, PA for the PA Grand Canyon), so I was out of town and unable to attend the opening.

They are the second Hummelstown brewery to open this week. Rubber Soul Brewing Company opened on Monday, October 5th, 2020, along South Hanover Street (across from the Rita’s) in the former borough building.

Howling Henry’s has been around for a while in the Hummelstown area. They have been at the Mount Hope Renaissance Faire brewfest for several years (with their unique stand and jockey box of the doghouse). They have also been selling their bottles to the local shops and bars (JoJo’s Pizza Shop Restaurant on Main Street often carried their bottles in their cooler), and they distributed some kegs to local bars (Warwick Hotel would occasionally have them on tap). They’ve also been selling their bottles in the recent year or so at various farmer’s markets (the Hershey’s Chocolate Street Market primarily).

COVID-19 (the coronavirus) has certainly played an interesting issue in their opening this year, and has delayed much in the way of the taproom opening. Several other breweries opened amid the pandemic – Hemauer, Rubber Soul, Highway Manor, Cox’s Rally Point, etc. This is certainly an interesting time and a hard time for businesses to open, thrive, and grow their brands. There has been a lot of uncertainty, but it’s great to see Greg get to realize his dreams and open Howling Henry.

Howling Henry’s taproom is located at 35 East 2nd St in Hummelstown. This is located near the exit of Hummelstown (the underpass) heading towards South Hanover (where South Hanover street becomes Grandview leading out towards Route 39 and East Hanover / Hershey). It is across the street from M&S Auto (a used car shop and garage). It is about three blocks down from the square of Hummelstown (Main Street / South Hanover crossing).

This will become the second brewery / taproom in Hummelstown now (coincidentally both opening this week as well, going from 0 to 2 in five days flat!). The above map shows a walking path from Howling Henry’s to Rubber Soul. Making the town a nice tourist stop for craft beer enthusiasts now.

Howling Henry’s joins a growing community of breweries within five-fifteen minute driving distance from the Hummelstown area. Including:

You can use the Brew Baron’s App to find more in the larger (Central PA) area. So as you can see from the above list, and the app, within just this small subset local area of Central PA there is many brewery choices. All good and well done establishments with wonderful beer offerings. Currently, on Untappd, Howling Henry’s is listed as a Nano Brewery, and recently updated their description page with the following: “Opening our taproom on October 9th at 6 PM. Howling Henry’s Brewery is crafting beer without rules, which causes our beers to be an nontraditional representations of their contemporaneity styles. Are you ready for a different take on traditional beer styles, then you should give Howling Henry’s a try? Our beers are not filtered, so we can offer as much flavor as possible. Tap room coming to Hummelstown soon; check my website out for details.” They have 11 Unique Beers listed, with a global average rating of 3.21 out of 3,825 ratings.

Their hours on their Facebook page for the taproom are listed as:

  • MONDAY: CLOSED
  • TUESDAY: CLOSED
  • WEDNESDAY: 5:00PM – 10:00PM
  • THURSDAY: 5:00PM – 10:00PM
  • FRIDAY: 5:00PM – 10:00PM
  • SATURDAY: 11:00AM – 6:00PM
  • SUNDAY: CLOSED

They use the old Theo’s Attanasoff pizza warehouse to brew their beers in a corner of the building. The old Theo’s warehouse is located at the corner of Duke and 2nd Street in Hummelstown, and is now primarily used by Pnuma Outdoors. (You can see a map of the Howling Henry’s brewing location and taproom below). The brewing location is off limits to tourists though.

On their website you can read their backstory, which is:

My brewing story began after a department store wine kit was hauled off by the trashmen. Yes, a wine kit started my passion with brewing beer, and in time my business. I trashed the kit  because I  lacked knowledge in the process of wine-making, and more frighteningly, in how to clean and sanitize the equipment. The instructions emphasized sanitization, but the concern that I may get someone sick caused me to drop kick the kit into the waste can.

I then read a magazine article about home brewing. Who doesn’t like beer, right? This article made it clear that cleanliness is a very important part of the process, but as I read, I realized that  I was overthinking it. I began to understand that all of debris needs to be removed from the brewing equipment, and then a sanitizer is added to the equipment to kill most of the bacteria, so that your pitched yeast has no competition when it infects your bitter wort. Simple! I am a simple guy, and I figured that I can do that.

I bought my first brewing kit: 5 gallon brew kettle, a 5 gallon carboy, and a 7 gallon food grade bucket. The recipe was a brown ale. It was good for a month or two, and then it started losing flavor. I came to realize that bottling introduces oxygen to the finished beer. Oxygen in finished beer after time will degrade that beer’s flavor.

After a year of making my own recipes my wife and I were seated at a local watering hole for lunch (the Wednesday before Thanksgiving). She said, “Why don’t you start a brewery?” To be honest it was in the back of my head, but I figured that thought would never become a conversion with my wife. So, I agreed with her, as a good husband would do. Although, at the time, neither of us really understood what we were getting ourselves into.

I started reading from a website devoted to the entire brewing process. With this knowledge, I began brewing beers around ingredients I knew a little brewery could access without to much hassle. Through this site I also learned of a movie made in the mid 90’s called ‘Frankenbrew’. This video showed me that one guy with some determination, out of the box thinking, and hard work could start a brewery without investors, a bank loan, or a truck load of cash. I then followed the movie’s suggestions on what to buy from the used dairy equipment market. This offset the price of starting a new brewery significantly, since I had already priced out a real brewery’s equipment prior to seeing the movie. I knew I could never come up with a million or so dollars myself, and I wanted this brewery to be mine. Yes, you read that correctly! I am the only owner, investor, employee, brewer, boss, maintenance guy, and janitor. I did it all with help from some wonderful family members and great friends when they had time to help. It is a wonderful feeling to know I only have me to answer to.

Years later, I had the stainless steel equipment needed. I found a space three blocks from my home. By this time, I realized that I needed a real brew kettle. Having well over 200 gallons of boiling wort would be very dangerous in anything less than a proven kettle, so I ordered and purchased a 10 bbl Bennett Forgeworks brew kettle. I then started getting the paperwork inked with both the Federal and State government agencies. Approvals took a lifetime, okay about 6 months (a lifetime for a guy with barely any budget).

So when in the Hummelstown area, be sure to check out the newest brewery – Howling Henry’s. Make sure you are in town during their hours (5PM-10PM on Wednesday through Friday and Saturday 11AM-6PM). The taproom is limited currently due to COVID restrictions, but its still a place to check out. Be sure to do so!
