Mellow Mink Brewing’s Closing Announcement

Mellow Mink

This. One. Hurts. Some places, some breweries, just become a part of you and part of your craft beer experience, and world, and enjoyment. As we see more and more breweries closing this year, and the upcoming years, some are going to hurt more than others. Each person is different, and each brewery’s closing will affect people differently; but this one really just hurts. Matt and Cole are such wonderful people, who have done a lot for the beer community, have made a tremendous brewery and bar experience, and have been such wonderful people to talk beer with, this absolutely hurts. Like The Alementary and their closing, Mellow Mink Brewery held a very special place in our hearts here at The Beer Thrillers. We just want to go above and beyond to say thank you to all Matt and Cole and have done for the community.

Mellow Mink Brewing is located at 4830 Carlisle Pike in Hampden Township (4830 Carlisle Pike, Mechanicsburg, PA 17050).

Mellow Mink Brewing is a craft brewery located in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, known for its unique and innovative approach to brewing. Founded by Matt Miller and Cole Taylor, Mellow Mink specializes in producing a wide range of craft beers, with a particular focus on sours and barrel-aged brews. The brewery has gained a reputation for its meticulous brewing process and the use of high-quality ingredients, ensuring each beer offers a distinct and memorable flavor profile.

The brewery’s taproom provides a welcoming and stylish environment for patrons to enjoy their beverages. With a sleek and modern design, the taproom offers a comfortable space for beer enthusiasts to gather and savor Mellow Mink’s diverse selection. In addition to its regular lineup, the brewery frequently releases limited-edition and seasonal beers, keeping the menu fresh and exciting for visitors. The taproom also hosts various events, including beer tastings, food pairings, and community gatherings, enhancing the overall experience.

Josh and Ben hanging out with Matt and Cole at Mellow Mink Brewery (January 2020)

When our blog was still new and baby fresh, Matt invited Josh and I out to their brewery to have a behind the scenes tour and get an intimate look at their operation, their beers and their sours, and we had such a wonderful time hanging out with Matt and Cole and spending hour and hour after hour talking about beer to no end. (See: Brewery Visit – Mellow Mink Brewery) I can’t thank Matt and Cole enough for that experience, as we learned so much from it all, and more importantly – just had a wonderful night.

Mellow Mink Brewing is Closing

As more and more breweries are closing, theres a lot of dynamics at play, and a lot of reasons for why they are closing. There is certainly a ‘bubble bursting’ in the craft beer industry, no matter how much some will tell you otherwise. And there is so many reasons and things that go into what makes a brewery great, or what will keep it standing out, and will keep people going back. The loss of Mellow Mink will be a big blow to the Central PA and the Harrisburg area and Harrisburg adjacent beer area.

Here is their announcement posted to social media:

Mellow Mink Brewing’s Closing Announcement

Today, it is with a heavy heart that we announce the upcoming closure of Mellow Mink Brewing. We have cherished the opportunity to serve our fans and community for the past six years. We are deeply proud of the beers and cocktails that we crafted, and the all-inclusive environment that we fostered. We now plan to wind-down brewing and taproom operations and close permanently by the end of August 2024. We hope you will visit us again before we are gone – we will be releasing several small batch and full-scale blends that are currently in the tanks. Thank you all for your love and support over the years!

Mellow Mink Brewing – Facebook Post

The out pouring of support started immediately right after they made their announcement and posts. The love the community has for them clearly shown, sadly, not enough support was given while they were fully in operation.

But, please everyone, lets go and visit them throughout July, and August, until their last day. Lets show Matt and Cole all the support we can while the doors are open — and afterwards. Let them know how much they are loved by the community. How great their sours are, and how much their stouts, and IPAs, kicked butt as well.

I just want to reiterate how much love we have for Matt and Cole and all the staff at Mellow Mink Brewery, and wish the absolute best for all involved in the future and everything they do. Lets all raise a pint to Matt, Cole, the staff of Mellow Mink, and the brewery itself!

(Join us, Josh, Ben, and Amy, as we will be visiting Mellow Mink, Friday – July 5th, after 6PM.)

Craft Beer Trends to Watch in 2024 https://thebeerthrillers.com/2024/01/01/craft-beer-trends-to-watch-in-2024/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=craft-beer-trends-to-watch-in-2024 Mon, 01 Jan 2024 07:56:58 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=14810

Craft Beer Trends for 2024

As craft beer enthusiasts, we are constantly on the lookout for what’s next in the vibrant world of brewing. This year, we’ve seen brewers push the boundaries of creativity and innovation, bringing forward bold flavors, sustainable practices, and surprising collaborations that have captivated our taste buds. Here are the top craft beer trends to watch in 2024.

1. Rise of Non-Alcoholic Craft Beers

Non-alcoholic (NA) beers have been gaining traction over the past few years, and 2024 is poised to see an explosion of options in this category. Brewers are perfecting techniques to brew NA beers that retain the complexity and depth of their alcoholic counterparts. From hoppy IPAs to rich stouts, alcohol-free no longer means flavor-free. This trend caters not only to health-conscious drinkers but also to those looking to enjoy beer flavors at any time of the day without the effects of alcohol.

2. Local and Hyper-Local Ingredients

Sustainability continues to be a key focus, and more breweries are turning to local and hyper-local sourcing for their ingredients. This practice supports local economies and reduces the environmental impact associated with transportation. Expect to see more beers proudly advertising their use of local grains, hops, and adjuncts like fruits and herbs, which can also provide unique, regional flavors that set these brews apart from the pack.

3. Experimental and Hybrid Styles

Brewers are not just sticking to traditional styles; they are increasingly experimenting with hybrid beers that blend the lines between established beer categories. Think lagers with ale-like hopping levels, or stouts brewed with wild yeast strains typically used in sour beers. This experimentation is also seeing the rise of ‘fusion beers’ that incorporate elements from different brewing traditions, culinary techniques, or even other beverages like cocktails and wines.

4. Revival of Historical Styles

While innovation is key, there is also a growing interest in historical beer styles that had previously fallen out of favor. Styles like Gruit, made with herbs instead of hops, or traditional farmhouse ales from various European regions, are making a comeback. These beers offer a glimpse into the past and celebrate the rich history of brewing.

5. Craft Maltsters on the Rise

As craft brewers look to distinguish their offerings, there is an increasing focus on the role of malt in flavor profiles. Craft maltsters are popping up, offering malts that are not only locally sourced but also crafted to provide unique colors, flavors, and aromas. This trend is pushing brewers to explore new malt varieties and push the envelope on what malt can contribute to beer beyond the basic foundation.

6. Sour Beers Continue to Sour… and Evolve

The sour beer category continues to expand, with more nuanced and complex sour offerings hitting the market. Brewers are moving beyond basic kettle sours into more sophisticated fermentation techniques, including mixed fermentation and the use of wood aging to introduce deeper flavors. Additionally, the use of non-traditional fruits, spices, and even vegetables in sour beers is on the rise, creating endless possibilities for innovation.

7. Eco-Friendly Brewing

Finally, sustainability isn’t just about local sourcing. Breweries are increasingly adopting eco-friendly practices across their operations, from solar-powered breweries to water reclamation and waste reduction techniques. Consumers are more conscious than ever about their environmental impact, and supporting breweries that share these values is becoming a significant factor in purchasing decisions.

As we continue through 2024, these trends suggest that the craft beer industry will remain as dynamic and exciting as ever. Whether you’re a brewer or a beer lover, there’s much to look forward to—new flavors, old classics revisited, and innovative practices that make us proud to be part of this community. Here’s to another year of great beer and great company! Cheers!

Highway Manor Brewing Has Seemingly Been Closed https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/10/26/highway-manor-brewing-has-seemingly-been-closed/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=highway-manor-brewing-has-seemingly-been-closed Thu, 26 Oct 2023 20:48:51 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=12763 Apparent Closing

Breweries closing and ghosting isn’t all that outside of the unusual. Typically though they don’t completely fall through the radar system – normally someone sees it and it gets noticed. Highway Manor Brewing did one of the most quiet closings in quite a while however.

About two weeks ago we went out to Sworn Brewing and just on a whim decided to see about Highway Manor Brewing. I knew it had been quite a while since we had gone out there (apparently two years). Amy and I had went, and I had gone out previously by myself on their opening night / weekend. Looking it up on some saved breweries Google maps I have on my phone, and on the three maps it was still listed as a brewery with the mug there.

But when doing a Google search, it popped up as “Permanently Closed”.

Seemingly no mentions of it on the various beer groups of the area; nor the brewery groups of the state; nor even websites or beer sites at large.

Checking their personal Facebook their last post was on April 16th, a simple post, a shared post from Blackfoot Daisy, just saying: “If you really want to strike back at Ticketmaster, go see a local band at a local venue.”

There is one comment on the post, from 9 weeks ago, saying: “PSA: this is closed down! It doesn’t say it ANYWHERE online but it’s abandoned.”

The next post before that is a post from December 24th, 2022 stating: “Opening from 3-8pm today.” And the last post before this one is from Thanksgiving giving hours.

So obviously, posting on social media was certainly not a huge pressing concern for the brewery, but even outside the April post being a share, the last real post was from December 24th, 2022.

Controversy

During the second COVID – 19 shut down in late 2020 and very early 2021; Highway Manor Brewing found themselves in a rather steeped bit of controversy.

The brewery had put a sign on their front door saying: “TO GO ONLY – BLAME CHINA.” And on various things the personal owner and brewer (via Facebook, Twitter, etc.) posted that it was the “Asian Flu” and that the “Chineese Pandemic Did This”.

On December 27th, 2020; PennLive ran an article discussing how Johnnie Compton III took the sign down; primarily at the urging of his daughter.

In the most recent of pandemic-related controversies, a West Shore brewery owner has taken down a sign that brought allegations of racism to his door.

Johnnie Compton III, owner of Highway Manor Brewery in Camp Hill, said once the COVID-19 regulations hit his business, he and his staff put up “funny signs” to alert customers to their new methods of operation.

Controversial sign on central Pa. brewery gone after owner says joke was ‘misconstrued’

The second shut down for restaurants, businesses of the social sort, casinos, etc; was done as a way to curtail problems with COVID – 19 that might arrive during the holiday seasons of Christmas and New Years Eve after Thanksgiving.

Johnnie had stated that he and his staff enjoyed putting up signs on their door, as well as internally during the tumultuous 2020 as a way to bring levity to the time. And with the second shut down, he was ‘agonizing’ over what to put up next when he thought of his “TO GO ONLY – BLAME CHINA” sign; thinking it was funny.

I’m sick of hearing about COVID.

Johnnie Compton III – Owner and Head Brewmaster for Highway Manor Brewing

The sign was originally posted on Wednesday, which was the 23rd. Compton stated that only the day of the PennLive article did the sign go viral on social media. (But it seems the sign was both up longer than Wednesday, despite the article and Comtpon saying so, and that it made the rounds of social media sooner than had been stated as well.)

While talking about it with his staff, someone made a joke about the coronavirus coming from China, which Compton said is a simple fact. With that, came their latest sign:

“TO GO ONLY BLAME CHINA” with the taproom’s hours and Compton’s phone number listed alongside it.

While the sign went up on Wednesday, Compton said it was only in the last day or so that the sign began making its rounds on social media and people began complaining about it, with some calling him a racist.

One post viewed by PennLive said the person was trying to support local businesses when they saw the sign. “So ignorant and xenophobic,” the person wrote, adding they would not be returning.

Compton said people have been messaging and calling him, including a woman who called him at 9:30 p.m. Saturday to call him a racist.

In the end, he said he decided to take the sign down.

“People are misinterpreting it, clearly,” Compton said.

Controversial sign on central Pa. brewery gone after owner says joke was ‘misconstrued’

Writing controversial signs certainly isn’t new for Compton at the brewery; previously he had written one sign saying: “Wear a mask by order of the Big Bad Wolf.”

For more information on the controversy, you can read the full news article here: Controversial sign on central Pa. brewery gone after owner says joke was ‘misconstrued’ by PennLive.

Problems

The controversy over the signs certainly didn’t help the brewery any. The Highway Manor Brewery opened on September 26th, 2020 during COVID – 19. Obviously not the best time to be opening a brewery; but many others have made it work that opened during that year (Rubber Soul in Hummelstown, The Englewood in Hummelstown / Hershey, etc.) Rubber Soul Brewing Company even opened just four days after Highway Manor Brewing.

Highway Manor Brewing left no messages on social media – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Reddit, etc; stating why they closed. But there is most likely numerous reasons. The ghosting of breweries has become more of a prevalent things in recent months / this year; or at least the very minimal notice of imminent closing (like Mount Gretna Brewing Company).

Businesses aren’t obligated to tell anybody when they are closing, but it certainly fosters good trust in the future dealings with owners, helps their own staff, and at least is good etiquette to their faithful guests and customers. It just seems like the reasonable and nice thing to do.

No Word Has Been Received

No word has been received since a week ago when I sent one to the e-mail provided on the Facebook. (It has also not come back with a DAEMON response either though.)

I imagine a few maps will be needing to be updated soon to show that the brewery has been closed. Its a shame, when Amy and I went, we had a nice few beers (despite the lone dog just wandering the premises unleashed), and the time I went by myself at their opening – I enjoyed the beers and the sandwich.

An excerpt from my brewery review:

All around amazing beer and went fantastically with my sandwich. By this point I had moved to the center table and sat across from the one swing. I was informed by Johnny (Johnny Compton III – owner/brewer at Highway Manor Brewing) that a friend of his bought everyone a round. I was then joined by a couple – Lucas and Kaitlin who sat next to me.

They were both wearing ‘cat’ pants (pants with dozens of cat faces all over them), and quickly from talking to them I realized Lucas was Johnny’s friend. I thanked him for the beer, and for the rest of the night there, talked with them while we all drank, as well as talked with a few others who were there and one or two that came and went.

The Health Benefits of Craft Beer

Breaking Down the Buzz: The Health Benefits of Craft Beer

Craft beer has become increasingly popular in recent years, with microbreweries and taprooms popping up in cities across the country. While many people enjoy craft beer for its unique flavors and high-quality ingredients, some may not be aware of the potential health benefits that come with drinking it in moderation. In this article, we’ll explore the science behind the buzz and break down some of the ways craft beer can benefit your health.

One of the primary health benefits of craft beer is its antioxidant content. Antioxidants are compounds that help to protect your body against free radicals, which can cause cellular damage and increase the risk of chronic diseases like cancer and heart disease. Craft beer contains a variety of antioxidants, including polyphenols, which are found in the hops and barley used to brew beer. Studies have shown that these compounds can help to reduce inflammation, improve blood vessel function, and lower blood pressure.

In addition to its antioxidant content, craft beer may also be beneficial for gut health. Like many fermented foods, beer contains live cultures of bacteria that can help to promote a healthy gut microbiome. A healthy gut microbiome has been linked to a range of health benefits, including improved digestion, better immune function, and even a reduced risk of depression. While drinking too much beer can have a negative effect on gut health, enjoying a pint or two of craft beer in moderation may actually be good for your gut.

Craft beer may also be a good source of B vitamins, which are essential for energy metabolism and the functioning of the nervous system. These vitamins are found in the yeast used to ferment beer, and some studies have shown that they may help to reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, and cognitive decline. While B vitamins can also be found in other foods, craft beer can be a tasty and convenient way to get a dose of these important nutrients.

Of course, it’s important to remember that drinking too much beer can have negative effects on your health. Excessive alcohol consumption can increase the risk of liver disease, certain types of cancer, and other health problems. However, when enjoyed in moderation, craft beer can be a flavorful and potentially beneficial addition to a healthy diet.

Craft beer may offer a range of health benefits, from its antioxidant content to its potential positive effects on gut health and B vitamin content. However, it’s important to enjoy craft beer in moderation and as part of a healthy lifestyle. By choosing high-quality craft beers made with fresh, whole ingredients, you can sip your way to better health and enjoy the unique flavors and aromas of this beloved beverage.

When it comes to choosing craft beer for its health benefits, there are a few key things to keep in mind. First, look for beers that are made with whole, natural ingredients and avoid those that contain added sugars or artificial flavors. Beers that are brewed with high-quality hops and barley are likely to contain more antioxidants and other beneficial compounds.

Second, choose beers that are lower in alcohol content. While many craft beers have a higher alcohol content than mass-produced beers, excessive alcohol consumption can have negative effects on health. Look for beers with an ABV (alcohol by volume) of 6% or less, and enjoy them in moderation.

Finally, be aware of the calorie content of your beer. While craft beer can be a delicious and enjoyable part of a healthy diet, it’s important to keep track of your overall calorie intake. Beers that are high in alcohol or sugar can be calorie-dense, so opt for lighter beers or enjoy a smaller portion size.

Overall, craft beer can offer a range of potential health benefits when enjoyed in moderation as part of a healthy lifestyle. From its antioxidant content to its potential positive effects on gut health and B vitamin content, craft beer can be a tasty and convenient way to support your overall health and wellbeing. So next time you’re looking to unwind with a cold one, consider reaching for a delicious craft beer and toasting to your health.

Health Benefits of Craft Beer

Health Benefits of Craft Beer (in moderation)

Here are some potential health benefits of craft beer:

  1. Rich in antioxidants: Craft beer is rich in antioxidants, which can help protect your cells from damage caused by free radicals.
  2. Contains B vitamins: Many types of craft beer contain B vitamins, which are essential for maintaining a healthy nervous system, producing red blood cells, and converting food into energy.
  3. May improve heart health: Moderate consumption of craft beer has been linked to a reduced risk of heart disease. The polyphenols in beer can help lower cholesterol levels and improve blood flow.
  4. Can reduce inflammation: The hops in craft beer contain compounds called humulones, which have anti-inflammatory properties.
  5. May improve gut health: Craft beer contains probiotics that can help improve gut health and digestion.
  6. Can reduce stress: Drinking a moderate amount of craft beer can help reduce stress and anxiety, thanks to the relaxing effects of alcohol.
  7. May help prevent osteoporosis: Beer contains silicon, which is essential for bone health and can help prevent osteoporosis.

It’s important to note that while craft beer can offer some potential health benefits, excessive consumption can have negative effects on health. Always drink in moderation and consult with your healthcare provider if you have any concerns.

Craft beer can offer a range of potential health benefits when enjoyed in moderation as part of a healthy lifestyle. Here are some potential health-based craft beer options to consider:

  4. Sour beer: Sour beer has become increasingly popular in recent years, thanks in part to its potential health benefits. Sour beer is often brewed with lactobacillus, a probiotic that can help improve gut health.
  5. Fruit-infused beer: Many craft breweries are now infusing their beer with fruits like berries, cherries, or citrus. These beers can be a great source of vitamins and antioxidants, and they offer a delicious and refreshing way to enjoy a cold beer on a hot day.

There are many health-based craft beer options to choose from. Whether you’re looking for a low-alcohol option, a gluten-free beer, or a probiotic-rich sour beer, there is likely a craft brewery that offers a beer to suit your needs and tastes. As always, drink in moderation and consult with your healthcare provider if you have any concerns.

Craft beer has long been a beloved beverage, known for its unique and complex flavors. But did you know that craft beer can also offer a range of potential health benefits? Here are some of the top health-based craft beer options to consider.

Low-alcohol beer: Low-alcohol craft beer has become increasingly popular in recent years. These beers typically have an ABV (alcohol by volume) of 4% or less, making them a great option for those looking to enjoy a beer without consuming too much alcohol. Low-alcohol beer can also be a good option for those who are watching their calorie intake.

Gluten-free beer: Gluten-free craft beer is a great option for those with celiac disease or gluten intolerance. These beers are made with gluten-free grains like rice or sorghum and can still offer a delicious and refreshing beer experience. Many craft breweries now offer gluten-free options, so be sure to ask your local brewery if they have any gluten-free beers on tap.

Kombucha beer: Kombucha is a fermented tea that is often touted for its health benefits. Some craft breweries are now incorporating kombucha into their beer, creating a unique and flavorful drink that is rich in probiotics. Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that can help improve gut health and boost the immune system.

Sour beer is often brewed with lactobacillus, a probiotic that can help improve gut health. These beers have a tart and tangy flavor profile that is sure to tantalize your taste buds.

Fruit-infused beer: Fruit-infused craft beer can be a great source of vitamins and antioxidants. Many craft breweries are now infusing their beer with fruits like berries, cherries, or citrus. These beers offer a delicious and refreshing way to enjoy a cold beer on a hot day while also providing a boost of nutrients.

Whether you’re looking for a low-alcohol option, a gluten-free beer, or a probiotic-rich sour beer, there is likely a craft brewery that offers a beer to suit your needs and tastes. As always, drink in moderation and consult with your healthcare provider if you have any concerns. Cheers to your health!

Gut Health

Gut health has become an increasingly popular topic in the health and wellness community. The gut, or digestive tract, is responsible for breaking down food and absorbing nutrients. It is also home to trillions of bacteria and other microorganisms, collectively known as the gut microbiome. The health of the gut microbiome has been linked to a range of health conditions, from digestive issues to immune system function and mental health.

Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that can help improve gut health. These can be found in fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, and sauerkraut, as well as in supplements. Probiotics can help balance the gut microbiome by introducing beneficial bacteria into the digestive tract, which can help improve digestion and boost immune function.

Prebiotics are a type of fiber that can help feed the beneficial bacteria in the gut. These can be found in foods like bananas, onions, and garlic. Eating a diet rich in prebiotic foods can help support a healthy gut microbiome and improve overall gut health.

In addition to diet, lifestyle factors like stress, lack of sleep, and alcohol consumption can also affect gut health. Chronic stress can disrupt the balance of the gut microbiome, while lack of sleep can lead to inflammation in the gut. Drinking alcohol in excess can also harm the gut microbiome and contribute to digestive issues.

Gut health is an important aspect of overall health and wellness. Probiotics and prebiotics can help support a healthy gut microbiome, while lifestyle factors like stress and alcohol consumption can harm it. Eating a diet rich in fiber and fermented foods, getting enough sleep, and managing stress can all help support a healthy gut. By taking care of your gut, you can improve your digestion, boost your immune system, and even support your mental health.

Research suggests that moderate beer consumption can have positive effects on gut health. Beer contains live yeast and other beneficial bacteria, which can help promote a healthy gut microbiome. This microbiome is crucial for proper digestion, immune system function, and mental health.

Low-alcohol craft beers are particularly beneficial for gut health. They are made with a lower alcohol content, which means they contain less sugar and are easier for the body to digest. This can help prevent inflammation in the gut and reduce the risk of developing digestive issues like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

Gluten-free craft beers are also an excellent option for those with gluten intolerance or celiac disease. Gluten is a protein found in grains like wheat, barley, and rye, which can cause digestive issues for some people. Gluten-free beers are made with alternative grains like rice or sorghum, making them easier for the body to digest and less likely to cause inflammation in the gut.

Craft beer can be a healthy addition to a balanced diet and lifestyle, with potential benefits for gut health. The live yeast and beneficial bacteria found in craft beer can help promote a healthy gut microbiome, which is important for proper digestion, immune system function, and mental health. Choosing low-alcohol or gluten-free options can further enhance the positive effects of craft beer on gut health. However, it’s important to consume alcohol in moderation and as part of a healthy lifestyle, as excessive consumption can have negative effects on overall health.

In Summary

In conclusion, craft beer can have positive effects on gut health, as it contains live yeast and beneficial bacteria that can promote a healthy gut microbiome. Low-alcohol and gluten-free options can be particularly beneficial for those with digestive issues. Kombucha beer, which is infused with probiotics and antioxidants, is another great option for promoting gut health. However, it’s important to consume craft beer in moderation and as part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. Overall, incorporating craft beer into a healthy lifestyle can provide a tasty way to promote gut health and overall well-being.

It’s worth noting that while moderate consumption of craft beer can have potential health benefits, excessive consumption can have negative effects on gut health and overall health. Drinking in moderation means no more than one to two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women. It’s also important to consult with a healthcare professional if you have any digestive issues or health concerns before incorporating craft beer into your diet. With a balanced approach, craft beer can be a tasty addition to a healthy lifestyle that promotes gut health and overall well-being.

(We are not medical professionals here at The Beer Thrillers, so please be advised that this article was written via research on the internet, and not written by a trained medical professional. Also, with alcohol, moderation is always a very heavy factor. Never drink beyond your abilities or to the point of detriment.)

Little Fish Brewing Company Expanding into Dayton https://thebeerthrillers.com/2020/11/18/little-fish-brewing-company-expanding-into-dayton/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=little-fish-brewing-company-expanding-into-dayton Thu, 19 Nov 2020 03:34:38 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=5391
Little Fish Brewing Company in Athens, Ohio

Great news for the Athens Ohio brewery Little Fish Brewing Company, as they are expanding into Dayton Ohio. Early Wednesday the Athens based brewery announced that they signed a letter of intent with Windsor Companies to open a second location in Dayton at Webster Station, which is in downtown.

This won’t be immediate however, as the construction is due to begin in Spring 2021.

In a statement at the release of this announcement, the marketing director, Carli Dexter, for Windsor Companies said: “Downtown is really growing into an exciting hub for small and independent restaurants and bars, shopping, entertainment and living. We couldn’t be more excited that Little Fish is going to be a part of that.”

The location, 112 Webster Station, was the former site of Midwest Tools. Windsor Companies purchased the location in September of 2020. Little Fish Brewing Company will be the first tenant signed on to lease at the location.

I got to stop at Little Fish Brewing Company on my trip from Harrisburg Pennsylvania to Indianapolis Indiana and back. The brewery in Athens with its gorgeous outside venue, and wonderful building, was a fantastic little brewery, and the beer and food were excellent. You can see my trip article when I visited Little Fish here: Trip to Indy – Day Six.

I had an excellent, although sadly short, time there, and the bartenders were both very wonderful, talkative, and knew their beer. Great people working there that is for sure.

Their new location in Dayton will be focused primarily on sour beers, specifically wood barrel aged ones. Little Fish has made sure to let their customers know you will be able to enjoy all of their beers at both locations in the future; at both the Athens and the Dayton taprooms and beer gardens.

Little Fish Brewing Company is five years old, having started in 2015 by Sean White and Jimmy Stockwell, natives of Athens Ohio. But, they assure everyone they are no strangers to the Dayton area as well. As part of their release, Stockwell said: “Dayton is growing, and we very much look forward to being part of its future. We’re excited to become part of the vibrant restaurant and brewery scene and to bring a piece of the spirit of Athens to this strong community.”

Their Untappd description reads: “Our philosophy is to brew simple, rustic, and beautiful beers. While farmhouse ales and barrel-aged sours are close to our hearts, we equally love to brew and drink a meticulously crafted lager or a hop-forward pale ale. Nothing is off the table as long as it pairs well with friends and family! We strive to make our brewery a reflection of our beliefs. Our electricity is sourced from 100% renewable energy: solar & wind power. Almost every beer we make contains a majority of Ohio-grown ingredients by weight (starting with the base malt), and many of our beers are 100% Ohio-grown. Finally, we regularly support social justice and environmental causes that we believe in. Thanks for choosing our beer, and for appreciating the love & passion that goes into it!”

Read below for their official Facebook announcement, posted today – Wednesday, 11.18.20, with photos courtesy of their Facebook page:

Yesterday, November 15th (2020), Imprint Beer Co has announced that they will be the latest brewery in Pennsylvania to begin to ship state wide. There has been several other breweries that have begun shipping wide since the start of the year, primarily brought on by the rise of the pandemic and COVID-19 and restrictions changing how breweries need to work in Pennsylvania. Imprint Beer Co. has been one of the top breweries in Pennsylvania for the last couple of years, with regular long lines for their latest can releases, and being constantly touted online and raved about in various beer groups. You can find their shipping site on their main website here: Imprint Beer Co. Shipping.

The Trip to Indy – Day Five Recap: The Start of the Return Voyage – Visiting Cincinnati and Kentucky (Taste of Belgium, Moerlein Lager House, Braxton Brewing, Taft’s Ale House, Urban Artifact) https://thebeerthrillers.com/2020/11/12/the-trip-to-indy-day-5-recap-the-start-of-the-return-voyage-visiting-cincinnati-and-kentucky-taste-of-belgium-moerlein-lager-house-braxton-brewing-tafts-ale-house-urban-artifact/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-trip-to-indy-day-5-recap-the-start-of-the-return-voyage-visiting-cincinnati-and-kentucky-taste-of-belgium-moerlein-lager-house-braxton-brewing-tafts-ale-house-urban-artifact Fri, 13 Nov 2020 04:40:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=5253 Woooo-eeee. Another long day in the books… Day 5 and the start of the return to Pennsylvania.

Woke up in the hotel, drove to Cincinnati, stopping about an hour into the two hour drive to walk a one mile little park area called Brum’s Woods, just to give my legs a wake up and keep myself from falling asleep. But once I got into Cincinnati, I fell in love, immediately.

I got to park right near the Cincinnati Red’s stadium – Great American Ball Park. For 5.50$ I got two hours on the meter. I walked along the river front, walked along the one street, and found this Taste of Belgium restaurant. …I couldn’t help but go in.

A Taste of Belgium

Next thing I know I’m having Rodenbach, Avobode, and other high quality Belgian beers. And its only 11AM. I finally manage to pull myself away, and walked the Roebling Bridge into Kentucky and back, and then I stop in at the Christian Moerlein Lager House.

The Moerlein Lager House

Another fine brewery establishment. This was great, got to drink upstairs at the bar (something I never realized I would be so grateful for, since we can’t do this back in Pennsylvania anymore), and talked to a wonderful young sweet bartender who told me all about Cincinnati and we discussed the changing laws. She was saying they were expecting a news conference today about some new restrictions. From my view, I could see Paul Brown Stadium while I drank my pint.

After saying goodbye, I went back to my meter, put another 5.50$ in, and then went to the Underground Railroad Museum. If you are in Cincinnati, this is something you should definitely do. It is extremely powerful, and a very well done museum.

I then got back in my car and drove to Braxton Brewing Company in Kentucky. Now…. I hate to speak ill of a state…. but Kentucky was horrible. The brewery was AMAZING. But getting to it… and then leaving it… was so extremely aggravating. I have no idea why… but it was only 1.5 miles and it took me twenty minutes to get there, and fifteen minutes to leave. Apparently Kentuckians don’t know how to do round-a-bouts correctly. I have no idea what was going on with that.

Braxton Brewing Company

But, let me just say, the brewery was amazing. And Adam – the bartender – was one of the best bartenders I’ve gotten to spend time with and talk to in a while. I promised him I’d make a shout out to him in this blog post, so there you go. Dude is straight up nice, knowledgeable, and great bartender. If you stop in at Braxton Brewing, make sure you say hi to him, he is a class act. He too mentioned the governor of Ohio, and his own governor, doing an announcement at some point.

After making it back into Ohio, and Cincinnati, thankfully, I went to the Cincinnati Art Museum. Where I puttered about acting like I know what art is. I don’t. No clue. My ex-wife went to school to be an art teacher, and I have zero understanding of art. I always want to put a sign over urinals in bathrooms at art museums that just say: “THIS IS ART. YOU ARE MAKING ART.” And see if people will take pictures of it and believe it.

After the art museum, I then went to Taft’s Ale House.

Taft’s Ale house

This is another one of those beautiful stories of a church being turned into a brewery to preserve the building. Also, if you see the logo its Taft in a bathtub, so if you know the story of that, you’ll understand why I find that so amusing. (I’ll elaborate on that in the full write-up.)

After Taft’s I then went to Urban Artifact. It came as the most highly recommended place for me to visit from all of my friends, and I am so completely glad I did. Wow, every beer was absolutely amazing and fantastic. All sours. All sooo sooo sooooooooooo good. I picked up plenty of beers for Deuene Hoffman, and myself, and a t-shirt for myself, bid them a fond adieu, and then drove to Wilmington Ohio, where I was hoping to hit up a cidery right before they closed up, but unfortunately I got there at 10:05PM and as I walked up they closed the doors. So next time I’m in the area, I’ll try and hit it up again, I’m not a huge cider person, but if its there, its there, might as well. And figured this would be a great ending stop to the day. Oh well, so it goes. The cidery is called TinCap Cidery. In case you are ever in Wilmington Ohio, there is a cidery.

Ok, tomorrow will be Hocking Hills and some more legit hiking again, as well as Jackie O’s in Athens, and then on to Ohiopyl Saturday and the end of my trip sadly. My bank account I think is looking forward to this trip being over the most… …and my liver.

Well, stay healthy out there everyone, cheers!
