The craft brewing industry continues to grow, with brewpubs, microbreweries, and independent taprooms thriving and attracting dedicated customers. For craft breweries, incorporating sustainability can be a valuable strategy to ensure a successful and enduring future.

A company’s sustainability is becoming a major purchasing decision, especially among younger adults. Harvard Business Review recently found that Millennials were 27% more likely than older generations to buy a product when they believed a company cared about its impact on the earth and its people.

How can your brewery implement measures to become more sustainable? Follow the tips below.

1. Conserve and Recycle Water

Everything from filling up kegs or barrels to cleaning used equipment requires water. Besides being unsustainable, wasting lots of water means facing expensive monthly water bills. Fortunately, utilizing water conservation and recycling methods can resolve excess water usage.

Some craft breweries reduce how much water they use by installing or updating their wastewater treatment systems. This somewhat simple but effective change reuses wastewater created during brewing-related processes.

Breweries using wastewater more efficiently have less dependency on fresh water. Buying water-efficient cleaning and irrigation equipment can also significantly reduce water usage for breweries.

2. Lower Energy Usage

An effective way to lower energy consumption is by having your brewery use renewable energy. Utilizing wind energy is an effective way to become a more sustainable business. However, this type of energy isn’t typically available unless you’re near a wind power station.

Many craft breweries emphasizing sustainability increase their reliance on solar energy. After a solar panel installation, the sun’s rays shine down on these panels. Then, the business using these panels can rely on some or all of its energy needs by using solar power.

Your brewery can also begin making easier-to-implement changes on a smaller scale through an energy audit. Energy audits measure how a business uses energy, identifying where to make changes to reduce its overall electricity usage.

3. Implement Sustainable Shipping Methods

So far, you’ve learned about implementable sustainability methods to use during the brewing process. But what can your business do to be sustainable after products leave your warehouses? Focus on sustainable shipping.

There are nearly endless ways to become more sustainable through shipping changes. Your brand can send each order in a beer can shipper made from recyclable materials. Another option is to use sustainable materials as a medium for keeping a package’s contents safe.

4. Change What Happens to Brewing Waste

There’s no way to brew beer and other beverages without creating brewing-related waste. This situation leaves breweries dealing with a near-constant stream of seemingly useless grains from the brewing process. Fortunately, spent grains have many uses.

These grains remain edible while retaining most of their nutrients. Because of that, some craft breweries donate used grains to local farmers to use as compost or animal feed.

Brew a Greener Future

Staying successful in the brewing industry takes time and effort, but it can pay off in several ways. Sustainable companies often build and maintain strong relationships within nearby communities. Sustainable business practices may also lower your company’s operating expenses or help it qualify for tax-related incentives.

Grist House Shipping Statewide in Pennsylvania https://thebeerthrillers.com/2021/01/14/grist-house-shipping-statewide-in-pennsylvania/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=grist-house-shipping-statewide-in-pennsylvania Thu, 14 Jan 2021 22:45:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=7233
Grist House PA Beer Shipping (photo courtesy of their Facebook page)

Earlier today Grist House Craft Brewery announced that they will be shipping statewide in Pennsylvania. Adding yet another fantastic brewery to a growing long list of breweries shipping statewide in Pennsylvania. Soon it’ll be easier to list the breweries NOT shipping than the ones shipping.

They posted on their Facebook page at noon today:

“You have asked and it’s finally here! We are now shipping Grist House beer anywhere in Pennsylvania!

We’ve been working on this for a long time now, and we are so excited to be bringing Grist House to craft beer lovers all over the state!

Visit gristhouse.com/shipping for more info.”

In just the past week several breweries have announced shipping within or into Pennsylvania. If there was one thing that has been a good that has come out of 2020, its the increase in shipping for beer and beer services.

Grist House Craft Brewery is a micro brewery located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. According to Untappd they have 185 unique beers and a global average rating of 3.99 with 150K ratings. Their Untappd description reads: “Grist House Craft Brewery is located in the heart of Millvale, PA just minutes north of downtown Pittsburgh. Family owned and operated, we strive to produce high quality beer that is delicious and easy drinking. The brewery is loaded with character, from our taproom overlooking the brew system, our all-season deck and spacious outdoor seating area, to our tap handles hand crafted by a local blacksmith. We invite you, your friends and family to come enjoy a pint with us.”

As always everyone, get out there and enjoy some great local craft beer, or get some shipped to you from a small time great like Grist House or Tattered Flag or The Veil or Aslin, and enjoy a delicious pint of great craft beer.

Cheers!

Tattered Flag Shipping Statewide https://thebeerthrillers.com/2020/09/05/tattered-flag-shipping-statewide/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=tattered-flag-shipping-statewide Sat, 05 Sep 2020 14:43:15 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=4256
Tattered Flag’s Supply Drop announcement

Yesterday Tattered Flag Brewing and Distillery announced that they are the latest craft brewery in Pennsylvania to jump into the shipping game. Following breweries like Levante Brewing, Tired Hands Brewing, The Larimeer, and many others, Tattered Flag will also now be shipping to all of Pennsylvania.

While some breweries have been able to ship out of Pennsylvania, currently Tattered Flag is limited to Pennsylvania only, this is still a huge step for both the brewery and fans of great craft beer the whole state over. For people as far as Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, it can be hard to get your hands on Tattered Flag, so this is a great way for them to be able to try their amazing beers and spirits.

This is not just limited to their award winning craft beers, but also their award winning spirits like their Tequila and Vodkas and their other great liquors.

They dropped this bombshell at roughly 3PM yesterday, and this was their press release on their official Facebook page:

“Introducing Tattered Flag Supply Drop – your online source for DIRECT SHIPPING of Tattered Flag’s award-winning Beer, Spirits, and Ready To Drink Canned Cocktails! Head to www.tatteredflagsupplydrop.com to create your account and place your first order! FREE SHIPPING on orders of $75 or more! We are now accepting PRE-ORDERS for shipping on Wednesday, September 9th! To celebrate, we are releasing a limited supply of our Reposado Agave (barrel aged tequila) for purchase on the website only!#tatteredflagsupplydrop#directshipping#beer#spirits#toyourfrontdoor” (with the above image)

So if you are in the state of Pennsylvania and haven’t been able to try their fantastic beers yet, be sure to jump on this fantastic new way of getting to try them, and make sure to take advantage of the free shipping (on orders over 75$).

Its great seeing some of the success stories coming out of COVID for some of these local great breweries, like Tattered Flag, and some others that are expanding or opening soon (like Rubber Soul in Hummelstown soon due to open) and The Englewood.

Be sure to check out the many beer reviews of Tattered Flag’s beers we’ve done here on the blog to get an idea of what you can order from them.

Lots of big news coming soon here to the blog, so please stay tuned, especially if you live locally in the 717 area!

Cheers!
