In 1516, the Bavarian Duke Wilhelm IV enacted the Reinheitsgebot, or Beer Purity Law, which restricted beer ingredients to water, barley, and hops (yeast was added later once its role in fermentation was clarified). This legislation guaranteed quality and set a benchmark for clean, carefully crafted beers that continue to represent German brewing standards.

Wanna experience the magic of Oktoberfest in your own backyard? But wondering how? Here is a treat for beer lovers. Pouring a Bavarian beer just like the way Germans do or you see at Oktoberfest tents brings the true essence of their culture to your table. This art involves the exact foaming length or three-finger rule used at Oktoberfest beer tents. You must follow the traditional methods to ensure the perfect experience. Otherwise, it won’t be more like an ordinary drink.

Why the Perfect Pour Matters?

The way beer is poured can influence its taste, aroma and even a beer’s appearance. Germans won’t wait for a late tram, even for 2 minutes, but they will wait for 7 minutes while beer is being poured (viewers comment). This signifies the beer culture in Bavaria. You notice the Bavarian beer always has that thick, creamy foam on top. That’s not the accident. The perfect pour makes the beer look amazing, flavorful and fresh for longer. Plus, drinking beer like this makes you feel like you are at a German festival.

For customers wanting a logical answer, the right pouring methods help activate the beer’s carbonation. When you pour a beer, especially from the bottle or can, you are releasing the carbon dioxide which forms bubbles and creates foam. The proper foam head is not just for show. It offers wonderful aromas that allow you to smell the beer’s unique characteristics before you take a sip.

First, Understand the German Beer Types

In Bavaria, the main varieties are lager, pilsner, and wheat beer (that’s weissbier if you want to sound fancy). Each of these brews has its own unique taste and is different in its pouring style.

• Lager – This is your classic beer that is less carbonated. You can pour it quickly without worry.
• Pilsner – A bit more carbonated than lager, but still pretty straightforward to handle.
• Wheat Beer – This one is more explosive and it comes with yeast sitting at the bottom. You will need to take extra care with this one to keep that flavour intact.

Don’t Overlook the Foam!

In Germany, especially at Oktoberfest, beer is not just about the liquid; it is about how you present it. If there is a slight difference in pouring time or style, like you pour a 7-minute Pilsner in 3 minutes, the locals won’t accept it. The foaming length also matters. At Oktoberfest, about 1.5 inches of solid foam is preferable. Little than or no foam is literally not a Bavarian style. This enhances the visual appeal and retains aromas, making the experience more enjoyable.

Fun Little Trick of Oktoberfest Beer Tents — Three Finger Rule

It is a traditional guideline for pouring a beer during the world’s largest volkfest. The three-finger rule suggests that the ideal foam head should occupy the top up to three fingers width. Then, followed by three fingers of beer. Lastly, three fingers should be discarded if drinking from a large 1-litre stein. This measurement ensures that the beer remains cold and enjoyable until you take the last sip.

Don’t Spoil Your Bavarian Beer Taste with Silly Thing

• Many people are tempted to do this, but you should never pour leftover beer from an old glass into a fresh one or vice versa. It would ruin the flavour. Always finish your glass before grabbing another.
• There is one more rule for Bavarian beer. Pairing it with fruit or lemon is not a common practice for traditional styles in Germany, but you can ask it with only Kristallweizen. It is lighter and can enjoyed with some sort of fruit.

Master the Pouring Techniques for Each Beer Type

As said, first impressions matter. There is no exception for beer, too. A well-poured beer in an Oktoberfest way looks inviting, with rich foam and a clear body. It helps keep the beer carbonated for a long time. If you pour too aggressively, you can cause a massive explosion and end up with an awkward mess. Conversely, pouring too slowly results in little or no foam.

Wheat Beer

1. Grab your glass and tilt it more than 45 angles. In simple words, almost horizontally.
2. Stick the bottleneck deep into the glass.
3. Start pouring slowly to fill the two-thirds of the glass without creating a mountain of foam.
4. Gradually straighten the glass and pour the remaining beer directly into the centre, but a bit quickly. This will create a nice, thick head of foam.
5. Leave a little beer in the bottle. Swirl it gently to mix in the yeast, then pour it into the glass for added flavour.

Pilsner

1. Start with the same glass tilted, but it should be at the exact 45 degrees this time.
2. Pour the beer a little faster than the Weissbier until you’ve filled half of the glass.
3. Chill for a minute to let the foam settle.
4. Repeat this procedure until the bottle gets empty–pour a little and wait for a minute.
5. Germans say good pilsner takes seven minutes to pour (the patience of a saint).

Lager

1. Hold the glass at 45 degrees with the tip of the bottle inside.
2. Let it flow quickly, and once you reach about 2/3rd full, straighten the glass.
3. Wait for a few seconds for the foam to settle before serving.
4. This is quite easy to pour Lager than the other two.

Get ready to Cheers!

So you have poured a perfect beer, and now what? It's time to toast! At Oktoberfest, people donning traditional attire like Lederhosen and Dirndl say, “Prost!” So, while grabbing the beer stain with the exact Bavarian-style beer, don’t forget to cheer out loud in the same way with your friends. This will add fun, no matter whether you are partying at home or capturing the essence at a place other than Oktoberfest.

A follow up to my column just the other day – but what is your favorite item to grill and beer to wash it down with?

Here are some recommended combinations!

Recommended Beers and and Grills

The go to grill favorites is the hamburger and the hot dog!

Gemballa by YAH Brew

Starting with the classic Hot dog you should stick to a lager or Hefe.  These will balance nicely with the saltiness of a hot dog. We would recommend the Gemballa from YAH Brew. Their lager never disappoints.  It comes in with a 4.6 ABV and goes down easily.

The second classic to pair with a Hamburger would be a pale ale or depending in spiciness at wit beer.  Depending on the burger a richness in flavor will pair perfect with a lighter beer.  Especially thinking you’ll be outside enjoying this delight.  We are reaching for the Sunshine-N-Bananas by Sworn Brewing company.  It is the perfect Hefeweizen.  It is also refreshing on a hot day like today!

I am the kind of girl that likes to have cheese on her burger.  Depending on the type of cheese you use you won’t be changing the palate all that much.  You can stick with the same as the hamburger or try the Two Brewers American IPA by Lydian Stone Brewing Company.

Gordon Ramsay – STOP

I can’t help myself, but I need to grill some onions too.  Now if you can get the onions to caramelize.  God help me I feel like I am turning into Gordan Ramsey. Cheeseburger with grilled onions would rock with an amber lager. The malty sweetness can complement the caramelized onions perfectly.  It would go perfectly with Sweater Weather by Liquid Noise Brewing company.  This Brown ale was everything I hoped it would be and more.  It comes in at a 5.5 ABV and also compliments those caramel coconut girl scout cookies well too!

And since we have grilled onions let’s pair a beer with a grilled sausage. (Or as Amy likes to call it – SAUSEEEEEEEEEEGE)  (I pulled back from deciding on using a Ramsay Bolton sausage .gif here… I think we might all agree its best not to have that imagery in our heads.)

A sausage will pair with a dry pilsner.  There are so many kinds of sausage but if you go with a regular Italian sausage a dry pilsner will bring out those Italian flavors.  We would recommend a STICK HEAD PILS Pilsner by Boneshire Brew Works.  I must warn you this pilsner is very crushable but at 5.5 ABV it isn’t too scary.

Tomorrow – Monday, June 3rd (2024), Brothers Gotta Hug by Troegs Independent Brewing and Tonewood Brewing releases. It will be sold in 16 oz cans; and be available at the brewery in cases, four packs, and single cans. The four packs will be 18.99$. It will also see limited distribution in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. Use Troegs Brew Finder to find where. Brothers Gotta Hug

This open fermented styled Czech Pilsner weighs in at 5.0% ABV. It is the results of the collaborative efforts of Troegs Independent Brewing and Tonewood Brewing. Brothers Gotta Hug will be an open fermented Czech style pilsner. Fermented similar to how Troegs Brewing does Dreamweaver. The beer will be a Czech-style pilsner lager that is brewed with Saaz and Eldorado hops and it will be open fermented. It will be sold in 16 oz four packs, cases, and will also be on draft at the Troegs Brewery in Hershey (and possibly as well at the Tonewood Brewery in Barrington, NJ).

This Monday (April 29th) Troegs Brewing is releasing the Summer of Sunshine Variety 15-Pack. This is a big explosive pack of fifteen cans – five different beers, three cans each – that will be perfect all summer long. This is a perfect beach pack or hanging out for a summer picnic.

Summer of Sunshine Variety Pack Includes:

• 3 Cans of Sunshine Pilsner (12 oz)
• 3 Cans of Sunshine Salt and Lime Lager (12 oz)
• 3 Cans of Summer is Here (12 oz)

Troegs Brewing and Tonewood Brewing’s Brothers Gotta Hug

Troegs Brewing and Tonewood Brewing Collaborate for Brothers Gotta Hug

As part of their collaboration series this year, Troegs Independent Brewing has joined up with Tonewood Brewing to make Brothers Gotta Hug. Tonewood Brewing came to the Hershey brewery to help produce the beer in collaboration with Troegs Brewing.

Both breweries are owned by a pair of brothers. Of course everyone knows that John and Chris Trogner own Troegs Brewing, but Tonewood Brewing is also owned by a pair of brothers. Tonewood Brewing is owned by Eli and Taylor Facchine.

Brothers Gotta Hug

Brothers Don’t Shake Hands… They Hug! (Tommy Boy)

Brothers Gotta Hug will be an open fermented Czech style pilsner. Fermented similar to how Troegs Brewing does Dreamweaver. The beer will be a Czech-style pilsner lager that is brewed with Saaz and Eldorado hops and it will be open fermented. It will be sold in 16 oz four packs, cases, and will be on draft. It will also be in distribution in some areas of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and upper Delaware. (Use the Troegs Brewfinder to help locate it.)

Tonewood Brewing

We all know we have leftover Halloween candy. Either from buying too much to give away, or from your kids going out and getting it (and you ‘trick or treating’ yourself using their bags while their asleep). Or just using your 11-month old dressed up as an Ewok to get candy that she can’t even eat yet….

….not naming names…

But so, we all have leftover Halloween candy. So lets have some fun and pair it up with some beer!

Amy is here with a mid week hump day column, to give you some beer and candy pairing advice.

Halloween Candy

Admittedly I drink lots of beer and admittedly I have a sweet tooth. Absolutely a beer pairing with the Halloween candy is in order.  I mean, how many pieces of Halloween candy have you gotten into?  Pair it with a beer and let’s enjoy the mixed flavors

So what candy do you have left? 

Candy and Beer Pairings

Let’s break it down by styles and what can pair up with each style.

Stout or Porter

Stout or Porter – Pair it with the peanut butter cups! I’m going to start here because my favorite are the Reese’s peanut butter cups.  Pairing the creamy peanut butter cup with a dark and rich stout or Porter takes you on a flavor rich joyride.

Hefeweizen

Hefeweizen – Pair it with the Twix or anything caramel.  Something about the breadiness of a hefe and the taste of the shortbread and the caramel.  I thought it was still there with most other caramel candies too.

Sour

Sour – Pair it with the Hot Tamales! They still make those, right?  Or an Atomic Fireball.  The sweet and sour from the beer.  Anything spicy pairs perfectly with a good sour beer.

Pilsner

Pilsner – Pair it with the red licorice or anything similar to twizzlers.  Ok don’t laugh but use the twizzler like a straw.  I know, I know, don’t roll your eyes at me.  Try it! That sweet biscuit-like taste of a pilsner meshes perfectly with the sweetness of red or cherry licorice.

Brown Ale

Brown Ale – Pair it with the snickers or anything that has both a sweet and a salty.  The depth of flavor in a brown ale pairs perfectly with the sweet and salty fight going on in your mouth!

Cream Ale

Cream Ale – Ok, hear me out; pair it with Candy Corn.  You need a refreshing cream ale to wash down all the sugar from the candy corn.  I mean, who really eats candy corn?

For the first time ever Genesee Brewing has allowed their fans to help them pick the next specialty beer. And the fans have spoken!

Coming in November, will be the Genesee Brewing: Specialty – Citrus Pils. Genesee Brewing is saying Citrus Pils will be a cousin their beer – Ruby Red.

Voting

After months of voting, and over 10,500 Genesee fans voting – a winner has been selected in Rochester, New York.

The Genesee for ’23 Campaign promoted a crowd sourced approach to selecting and choosing (via voting) their next Specialty Beer. This was the first time Genesee Brewing put it up to vote and let their loyal fans decide the fate of the next specialty beer. So now, Citrus Pils will sit on the Genesee Specialty Beer line right alongside fan favorite Ruby Red Kolsch.

We are so excited for the community to get their hands on the beer that they helped create. As we head into winter, Citrus Pils will offer a bright and refreshing drinking experience during a frosty time of the year.

Citrus Pils

Citrus Pils is kind of like the winter cousin of Ruby Red, out of 10,500 votes, this flavor won by a land slide. Genny fans can’t seem to get enough of our citrus beers!

Named after the winning flavor profile – winter citrus – Citrus Pils is a pilsner style ale that will deliver bright flavors of tangerine and lime; pulling you out of your wintry blues and right into a warm summer’s day.

Citrus Pils will be available in 12 packs of 12 oz cans starting the first week of November (2023). Citrus Pils will be available across NY, PA, NC, VA, MA, FL, MD, NJ, VT and OH.
