Human Robot Beer is shutting down their Schuykill Banks location (on May 31st) and are opening new (two to be exact) taphouses. Crime and Punishment just recently closed and it looks like the vacancy will quickly be filled by Human Robot Beer. Human Robot Brewery will move its Schuylkill Banks tasting room to the recently vacated space of Crime and Punishment Brewing Co. at 2711 W. Girard Ave. in Brewerytown. Human Robot also has plans to open a new spot in New Hope, Bucks County.

Human Robot Beer’s Announcement

The Announcement

The following is Human Robot Beer’s announcement on Instagram:

When one door closes, TWO more open!
.
While we are sad to announce that we will be leaving our @humanrobotschuylkillbanks location on May 31st, we are VERY excited to share that we will be opening TWO new tasting rooms in the very near future.
.
@humanrobotgirard is thrilled to announce our move into the former Crime & Punishment location at 2711 W. Girard ave. We are truly honored to uphold the legacy established by Mike P, Wambs, and their amazing team over the last decade. One of our very first “meetings” took place in this space, and it holds a special place in our hearts. We cherish the memories we’ve made there over so many exceptional beers and look forward to creating even more with all of you. Our hope is to get it reopened as soon as possible. Our buddy Poe will be joining us as well, follow @poessidepiece and please follow our new social for updates!
.
@doublesNH is our new concept in New Hope, PA located at 12 W. Mechanic St. This will be a slightly different spin on what we have traditionally done. For one, we are bringing in a partner, @keithashore , to help with design and art and some special extras to be announced. This is being built from the ground up, so it will take a little longer, but look for us hopefully come July. Again, follow the socials there and we will update when we can!
.
Thanks for being on this journey with us and supporting us every step of the way. More info to come!

Human Robot Brewery Expands: New Locations in Brewerytown and New Hope

Crime and Punishment’s Brewery

Human Robot Brewery is making major moves in 2025, relocating its Schuylkill Banks tasting room to Brewerytown and launching a new concept in New Hope. Here’s what beer lovers need to know about these exciting changes.

Human Robot Brewery Takes Over Crime & Punishment’s Former Space

Human Robot Brewery will soon be calling 2711 W. Girard Avenue in Brewerytown its new home. This location, previously occupied by Crime & Punishment Brewing Co. for a decade, will become Human Robot Girard, replacing the brewery’s current Schuylkill Banks outpost, which will close on May 31, 2025. The move comes after Human Robot finalized a $760,000 purchase of the building, although the deal did not include Crime & Punishment’s business or brewing licenses.

The new taproom will retain much of the character and furnishings of Crime & Punishment, with only the brewing equipment being removed to make way for additional seating. Outdoor seating will also be available, and all former Crime & Punishment staff have been offered positions at the new Human Robot location.

What to Expect at Human Robot Girard

Patrons can look forward to the brewery’s signature lagers, pilsners, and innovative brews, including the popular Milktube pours. The food menu will feature sandwiches from Poe’s Side Piece, an offshoot of Poe’s Sandwich Joint, which is already a staple at Human Robot’s flagship in West Kensington. The brewery aims to honor the legacy of Crime & Punishment while bringing its own unique flair to the neighborhood.

Expansion Continues: New Hope Location Set for Summer

In addition to its Brewerytown plans, Human Robot is preparing to open a new tasting room called Doubles at 12 W. Mechanic Street in New Hope, marking its first venture into Bucks County. This ground-up project is expected to debut in July 2025 and will offer a slightly different experience compared to the brewery’s other locations. The New Hope outpost will bring the total number of Human Robot locations to five, including existing taprooms in Kensington, Jenkintown, and East Passyunk.

Human Robot’s Growth and Legacy

Founded in 2020 by Ken Correll, Chris Roller, and Jake Atkinson, Human Robot Brewery has quickly become a Philadelphia favorite, known for its experimental approach and dedication to quality. Head brewer Andrew Foss has helped popularize the use of Czech Lukr faucets, renowned for producing a thick, creamy foam on their beers.

The End of an Era for Crime & Punishment

Crime & Punishment Brewing Co., established in 2015, became a beloved fixture in Brewerytown, crafting nearly 500 unique beers over its ten-year run. The brewery closed its doors in April 2025, leaving behind a legacy of community and creativity that Human Robot aims to honor as it steps into the space.

With these strategic expansions, Human Robot Brewery continues to cement its reputation as one of Philadelphia’s most dynamic craft beer brands, promising new experiences for fans in both Brewerytown and New Hope.

Philadelphia German Bierfest 2025

Every year, Bierfest showcases Pennsylvania’s German brewing heritage and this state’s leadership in the brewing of (and appreciation of) German-style lager beers to encourage Pennsylvanians to take pride in our region’s centuries-long prowess in lager brewing.
“Locals may not realize that Pennsylvania brewers lead the nation in championing beer styles of German heritage, from refreshing pilsners to malty doppelbocks,” says Victory Brewing Company president Bill Covaleski, who served as founding president of the Brewers of Pennsylvania trade association and remains a board member. “Bierfest is a perfect showcase for what should be a point of pride for Philadelphia’s beer lovers.”
Even Pennsylvania’s smallest breweries and brewpubs tend to place greater emphasis on styles of German heritage than their competitors in other parts of the country, simply because of the depth and breadth of Germany’s cultural influence here. Many Philadelphians do not know that Pennsylvania is also home to the largest American-owned brewery in the USA – the Yuengling & Sons Brewery in Pottsville, which is known for their lagers.
Bierfest is decidedly European-influenced in its family-friendly and community-supporting vibe. To encourage local home brewers to try their hand at brewing the hard (German) way, Bierfest’s Home Sweet HomeBräu Taste-Off, sponsored by My Local Brew Works, will award the winning homebrewer an incredible opportunity to brew a commercial batch of their recipe in collaboration with the custom craft brewers of My Local Brew Works, to be served at Bierfest 2026! ‘Beer-Less’ tickets are available for designated drivers by contacting the German Society of PA.
Over two dozen Pennsylvania craft and legacy brewers will participate in Bierfest 2025, including Artifact Brewing [Hatboro], Attic Brewing Co. [Philadelphia], Broad Street Brewing Co. [Bristol], Brewery Techne / Bar Hygge [Philadelphia], Dock Street Brewing Co. [Philadelphia], Gunpowder Falls Brewing Co. [New Freedom], Iron Hill Brewery [Exton], Human Robot Brewery [Philadelphia], Lavery Brewing [Erie], Love City Brewing Co. [Philadelphia], Mainstay Independent Brewing Co. [Philadelphia], Michaux Brewing Co. [Philadelphia], My Local Brew Works [Philadelphia], Sly Fox Brewing Co. [Phoenixville], Susquehanna Brewing Co. [Pittston], Tired Hands Brewing Co. [Ardmore], Triple Bottom Brewing [Philadelphia], Tröegs Brewing Co. [Harrisburg], Two Locals Brewing Co. [Philadelphia], Victory Brewing Co. [Downingtown], Wallenpaupack Brewing Co. [Hawley], Wissahickon Brewing Co. [Philadelphia], Yards Brewing Co. [Philadelphia], ZeroDay Brewing Co. [Harrisburg], and more, plus the oldest and largest independent brewer in the USA, Yuengling & Sons Brewery [Pottsville].
Over two dozen German imported beers will also be poured, ranging from high-profile flagships to lesser-known artisanal products, including brews from Ayinger, Benediktiner, Bitburger, Erdinger, HofBräu, König Ludwig, Köstritzer, Krombacher, Paulaner, Radeberger, Schneider & Stiegl, Schöfferhofer, Tucher, Warsteiner and more, plus the oldest continuously operating brewery in the world, the Bavarian State Brewery at Weihenstephan. Bierfest will also host spaces dedicated to showcasing other local fermented foods and drinks such as the PA Cheese Cave hosted by members of the PA Cheese Guild, like Birchrun Hills Farm and a PA Cider Bar anchored PA cider makers like Ploughman and Stone & Key! Added last year, the popular “NoLo Bar” will return to this year’s Bierfest, featuring German-style no alcohol and low-alcohol beers, including Bitburger 0.0 and Stella Artois 0.0.
The German Society of Pennsylvania is a nonprofit organization founded in 1764, devoted to furthering the understanding of German and German-American contributions to the growth of American history and culture from the past to the present, and into the future. Executive vice-president Tony Michels is a Bierfest co-founder and also organizes Philadelphia’s German Heritage Festival.
Philly Roller Derby is a skater-owned and operated roller derby league and a proud member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). Since their inception in 2005, this league of athletic women on wheels has brought roller derby back to Philadelphia.
Brewers of Pennsylvania is a non-profit trade advocacy organization whose mission is to responsibly serve the needs of Pennsylvania’s diverse beer-drinking audience and to empower the state’s brewers to join together to support and protect their common and individual interests.
Bierfest co-founder Marnie Old is a noted Philadelphia drinks author and one of the country’s top expert speakers on wine and beer who by day serves as “director of vinlightenment” for Boisset Collection. She is a wine columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer and the author of many award-winning books, most notably He Said Beer, She Said Wine (DK 2008) and Wine: A Tasting Course (DK 2013).

Beerathon: 5K and Beerfest Coming to Philly

The first ever Beerathon 5K + Beer Fest – a one of a kind event focused on combining exercise and celebrating Pennsylvania based beer companies and beyond, is coming to Philly. Beerathon will take place Saturday, May 11 at The Navy Yard  in Philadelphia, PA and be composed of two parts: A 5k timed run and beer fest to follow.

Born out of training injuries that sidelined a group of friends from competing in the New York City marathon, they pivoted to something they were also good at: drinking beers. So, in 2011, in New York City, the Beerathon was born. A 26 bar, 26 beer adventure that captured the imaginations of beer lovers around the world. Now, over a decade of Beerathons around the country later, the newest challenge is born: Beers, Run, Ridiculous Fun, the Beerathon 5K + Beer Fest.

Beerathon kicks off with a totally doable 5K run (or walk) where participants will get that Runner’s High and earn a beer for each mile completed. After the race, patrons are invited to a ridiculously fun beer fest with an incredible list of curated beers, food trucks, live DJ and more on Marine Parade Grounds @ The Navy Yard.

Like beer more than running? Not ready to run or an old sports injury slowing you down? The Beerathon does not require any physical activity or participation in the 5K. Beer Fest Admission tickets are also available, separately. Choose your adventure: Beer Fest, 5K, or both! Beerathon is for everyone.

Our Town Brewery’s new taproom is Philadelphia is set to have their soft opening this weekend – Saturday and Sunday, the 3rd and 4th of February, 2024. They took to their social media today to make the announcement of their upcoming soft opening:

‼️ Our Philly Taproom at 1519 Ridge Avenue is finally ready for ya! Soft opening this Saturday and Sunday from 2pm-8pm ‼️
Hop over to IG to follow @ourtowntaproomphilly for more updates. It’s been a long road and we can’t wait to open the doors on Saturday!
Our Town Brewery – Facebook Post

In April of 2023 we broke the news here on the blog of their opening in Philadelphia – Our Town Brewery Expanding to Philadelphia, and in less than a year they are ready for their opening. First with the soft opening this weekend – February 3rd and 4th 2024; followed by their Grand Opening on Friday February 8th, 2024.

Currently Our Town Brewery is located in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. This additional taproom will be located at 1519 Ridge Avenue, Philadelphia.

Our Town Brewery’s New Taproom

Inside Our Town Brewery’s New Taproom

The new location at 1519 Ridge Avenue, Philadelphia will be a taproom only, meaning they won’t be producing any beer at this location. Their production will still be at the original location and brewery in Lancaster, PA. Our Town Brewery’s location will have a square footprint of 1,700 but the taproom will be 1,100 square feet. The bar – central to the location (directly upfront) will be 16 feet long (and able to seat 8), and then there will be tables dispersed throughout the taproom. The estimated seating will be 40 – 45 people. The bar itself will consist of 16 taps, including two beloved Lukr taps. They will serve outside cider and cocktails as well, befitting a PA Brewery’s License.

There is a front sidewalk and a 600 foot backyard – beer garden. These two areas will be able to seat an additional 20 people (estimated). Currently nearby is a dog park, and they will see if there is a way to be able to take their beer over to the dog park for those who wish to bring their furry friends out for a drink.

Brewery ARS Named in The 30 Best Breweries In The Country Right Now List https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/12/06/brewery-ars-named-in-the-30-best-breweries-in-the-country-right-now-list/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=brewery-ars-named-in-the-30-best-breweries-in-the-country-right-now-list Wed, 06 Dec 2023 17:48:38 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=13357
Brewery ARS

VinePair’s “The 30 Best Breweries In The Country Right Now” names Brewery ARS

VinePair, the popular beer, wine, alcoholic beverages, and liquor website, recently released a list of “The 30 Best Breweries In The Country Right Now”.

VinePair “surveyed beer bar professionals about the beer producers hitting right now. They consulted owners, beverage directors, and buyers from some of the country’s top beer pubs.” And they used this information to help determine and make the List of 30 Best Breweries in the Country Right Now.

Brewery ARS has two locations, both are in the greater Philadelphia area.

Good beer is pretty ubiquitous these days. To differentiate between the quality of the liquid can at times require more consideration for nuance than a pint should warrant. Deciding if you like a beer shouldn’t require any thought really. You like it or you don’t. Get a second or switch it up. When thinking about our ‘favorite’ current brewery, Cassie Cameron (our beer buyer) and myself immediately zoomed in close to home here in Philly. Provincial pride may have helped narrow our focus but the old cliched story about relationships and knowing who is behind your beer is more impactful today than it’s ever been.

VinePair: The 30 Best Breweries In The Country Right Now

Brewery ARS is high on a lot of people’s lists, VinePair isn’t the only one. If you go onto Reddit, or Quora, or Facebook and ask “Top Breweries in Philly” you are going to get Brewery ARS as an answer.

Brewery ARS is a brewery here in South Philly whose beer, especially their Wayne’s Pale Ale, could land on the top of any list of favorites, even if liquid was the only determining factor. Add in the fact that ego isn’t an adjunct in their process and that pretension is nowhere to be found in the brewery and you have a special recipe. The brewery is in a real-deal neighborhood and it fits right in. Only good people can make truly good beer. The people at ARS make truly good beer.

Keystone State Of Mind – New Trail Brewing Company and Other Half Brewing Company’s Newest Collaboration https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/10/25/keystone-state-of-mind-new-trail-brewing-company-and-other-half-brewing-companys-newest-collaboration/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=keystone-state-of-mind-new-trail-brewing-company-and-other-half-brewing-companys-newest-collaboration Wed, 25 Oct 2023 14:19:58 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=12825
Keystone State of Mind – A Collaboration Between New Trail Brewing Company and Other Half Brewing Company (photos courtesy of New Trail Brewing Company and Other Half Brewing Company’s Facebook)

A (Keystone) State of Mind

In a bit of a twist of the Billy Joel Song – “New York State of Mind” – New Trail Brewing Company and Other Half Brewing Company are releasing their newest collaboration together – Keystone State of Mind.

They previously worked together on “Pennsylvania Nights”; a wonderful and fantastic New England Hazy IPA.

And here they are – back at it together – releasing another New England Hazy IPA collaboration: Keystone State of Mind.

Keystone State of Mind

Keystone State of Mind is a collaboration between New Trail Brewing Company and Other Half Brewing Company. Other Half is one of the preeminent New England Hazy IPA makers on the East Coast; and New Trail is one of the haziest IPA makers in Pennsylvania. Other Half recently moved into PA adding another brewery to their collection.

So it seems like a perfect fit for the two of them to collaborate on making (another) New England Hazy IPA.

Keystone State of Mind clocks in at 8.7% ABV, is considered a Double New England Hazy IPA, and has no IBU listed. The malt bill is Pilsner, Oats, and White Wheat – which gives it that typical, perfect, soft, cloud like hazy mouthfeel. Each can is overflowing with hops – Motueka, Simcoe, Nectaron, and Nelson Sauvin; so a total hop bomb. This gives it notes of gummy peach rings, Pinot aromatics, and dank tropicals.

The beer is already available throughout the states, with some beer distributors already having it on their shelves (and not for long if its anything like the Pennsylvania Nights release). You can also find it at New Trail’s Brewery location in both 16 oz cans and on draft. Other Half’s Philadelphia location also has it in cans and on draft. The release should follow the New Trail distribution pattern and footprint, not Other Half’s. Other Half’s non-Pennsylvania locations will not have it available.

Billy Joel’s “Keystone State of Mind”

(Lyrics edited)

Some folks like to get away
Take a holiday from the neighbourhood
Hop a flight to Miami Beach
Or to Hollywood
But I’m taking a Greyhound
On the Delaware River Line
I’m in a Keystone state of mind

I’ve seen all the movie stars
In their fancy cars and their limousines
Been high in the Rockies under the evergreens
But I know what I’m needing
And I don’t want to waste more time
I’m in a Keystone state of mind

It was so easy living day by day
Out of touch with the rhythm and blues
But now I need a little give and take
The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Patriot News,

It comes down to reality
And it’s fine with me ’cause I’ve let it slide
Don’t care if it’s Chinatown or up on Riverside
I don’t have any reasons
I’ve left them all behind
I’m in a Keystone state of mind

It was so easy living day by day
Out of touch with the rhythm and blues
But now I need a little give and take
The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Patriot News

It comes down to reality
And it’s fine with me ’cause I’ve let it slide
Don’t care if it’s Chinatown or up on Riverside
I don’t have any reasons
I’ve left them all behind
I’m in a Keystone state of mind

I’m just taking a Greyhound on the Delaware River Line
‘Cause I’m in a Keystone state of mind

State by state we are adding maps of all of the different states with every brewery in each state. (We will eventually get to the US Territories, as well as the Canadian Provinces, and possibly more countries; as well as doing some fun maps like a map of all the breweries we’ve been to, and other fun maps.) You can find the brewery maps here:

We are also working on a project of creating printable and downloadable PDFs and resources to be able to check and keep track of all of the breweries you’ve been to. So stay tuned for that project once we are finished with the Brewery Maps of the US States.

Mystery Phillies fan buys rounds of beer for people in Section 103

Philadelphia Phillies fans had even more to celebrate after their win on Wednesday night when everyone in Section 103 was treated not once, but twice to free drinks, courtesy of an anonymous benefactor.

The generous act has left many wondering about the identity of this mysterious fan.

Reginald Duval Saint, a beer vendor at Citizens Bank Park who has a personal goal of serving beer in every MLB stadium, shared his encounter with the kind stranger. “He recognized me from an Eagles game where he had bought beer from me before. At this game, he just said, ‘I’m in Section 103, I want everyone to have a beer,'” recounted Duval Saint.

According to Duval Saint, the drinks on offer that night ranged from $12 for beer to $16 for canned cocktails. Despite the desire to remain anonymous, the buyer’s generosity sparked curiosity and gratitude among those in the section.

Ashley Phillips, who was sitting in Section 103, described the confusion and surprise amongst the crowd. “At first, everyone was unsure whether to even accept the beer. Then, when the guy came down my row, I recognized him and thanked him without making a fuss,” she said.

When asked if such generosity was typical for him, Phillips responded, “He’s always been incredibly nice, comes from a great family, and he really doesn’t want the credit, which is quite rare.”

With 352 seats in Section 103 and drinks costing between $12 and $16, the anonymous fan spent over $4,400 per round, totaling approximately $9,000 for both rounds of free drinks, making it a night to remember for those Phillies fans.
