Philadelphia German Bierfest 2025

Every year, Bierfest showcases Pennsylvania’s German brewing heritage and this state’s leadership in the brewing of (and appreciation of) German-style lager beers to encourage Pennsylvanians to take pride in our region’s centuries-long prowess in lager brewing.
“Locals may not realize that Pennsylvania brewers lead the nation in championing beer styles of German heritage, from refreshing pilsners to malty doppelbocks,” says Victory Brewing Company president Bill Covaleski, who served as founding president of the Brewers of Pennsylvania trade association and remains a board member. “Bierfest is a perfect showcase for what should be a point of pride for Philadelphia’s beer lovers.”
Even Pennsylvania’s smallest breweries and brewpubs tend to place greater emphasis on styles of German heritage than their competitors in other parts of the country, simply because of the depth and breadth of Germany’s cultural influence here. Many Philadelphians do not know that Pennsylvania is also home to the largest American-owned brewery in the USA – the Yuengling & Sons Brewery in Pottsville, which is known for their lagers.
Bierfest is decidedly European-influenced in its family-friendly and community-supporting vibe. To encourage local home brewers to try their hand at brewing the hard (German) way, Bierfest’s Home Sweet HomeBräu Taste-Off, sponsored by My Local Brew Works, will award the winning homebrewer an incredible opportunity to brew a commercial batch of their recipe in collaboration with the custom craft brewers of My Local Brew Works, to be served at Bierfest 2026! ‘Beer-Less’ tickets are available for designated drivers by contacting the German Society of PA.
Over two dozen Pennsylvania craft and legacy brewers will participate in Bierfest 2025, including Artifact Brewing [Hatboro], Attic Brewing Co. [Philadelphia], Broad Street Brewing Co. [Bristol], Brewery Techne / Bar Hygge [Philadelphia], Dock Street Brewing Co. [Philadelphia], Gunpowder Falls Brewing Co. [New Freedom], Iron Hill Brewery [Exton], Human Robot Brewery [Philadelphia], Lavery Brewing [Erie], Love City Brewing Co. [Philadelphia], Mainstay Independent Brewing Co. [Philadelphia], Michaux Brewing Co. [Philadelphia], My Local Brew Works [Philadelphia], Sly Fox Brewing Co. [Phoenixville], Susquehanna Brewing Co. [Pittston], Tired Hands Brewing Co. [Ardmore], Triple Bottom Brewing [Philadelphia], Tröegs Brewing Co. [Harrisburg], Two Locals Brewing Co. [Philadelphia], Victory Brewing Co. [Downingtown], Wallenpaupack Brewing Co. [Hawley], Wissahickon Brewing Co. [Philadelphia], Yards Brewing Co. [Philadelphia], ZeroDay Brewing Co. [Harrisburg], and more, plus the oldest and largest independent brewer in the USA, Yuengling & Sons Brewery [Pottsville].
Over two dozen German imported beers will also be poured, ranging from high-profile flagships to lesser-known artisanal products, including brews from Ayinger, Benediktiner, Bitburger, Erdinger, HofBräu, König Ludwig, Köstritzer, Krombacher, Paulaner, Radeberger, Schneider & Stiegl, Schöfferhofer, Tucher, Warsteiner and more, plus the oldest continuously operating brewery in the world, the Bavarian State Brewery at Weihenstephan. Bierfest will also host spaces dedicated to showcasing other local fermented foods and drinks such as the PA Cheese Cave hosted by members of the PA Cheese Guild, like Birchrun Hills Farm and a PA Cider Bar anchored PA cider makers like Ploughman and Stone & Key! Added last year, the popular “NoLo Bar” will return to this year’s Bierfest, featuring German-style no alcohol and low-alcohol beers, including Bitburger 0.0 and Stella Artois 0.0.
The German Society of Pennsylvania is a nonprofit organization founded in 1764, devoted to furthering the understanding of German and German-American contributions to the growth of American history and culture from the past to the present, and into the future. Executive vice-president Tony Michels is a Bierfest co-founder and also organizes Philadelphia’s German Heritage Festival.
Philly Roller Derby is a skater-owned and operated roller derby league and a proud member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). Since their inception in 2005, this league of athletic women on wheels has brought roller derby back to Philadelphia.
Brewers of Pennsylvania is a non-profit trade advocacy organization whose mission is to responsibly serve the needs of Pennsylvania’s diverse beer-drinking audience and to empower the state’s brewers to join together to support and protect their common and individual interests.
Bierfest co-founder Marnie Old is a noted Philadelphia drinks author and one of the country’s top expert speakers on wine and beer who by day serves as “director of vinlightenment” for Boisset Collection. She is a wine columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer and the author of many award-winning books, most notably He Said Beer, She Said Wine (DK 2008) and Wine: A Tasting Course (DK 2013).

Map of Dog Friendly Breweries in Pennsylvania https://thebeerthrillers.com/2024/06/24/map-of-dog-friendly-breweries-in-pennsylvania/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=map-of-dog-friendly-breweries-in-pennsylvania Mon, 24 Jun 2024 15:14:46 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=15191

A map of all of the dog friendly breweries in Pennsylvania. (Will try and keep this updated to the best of my ability.)

Dog Friendly Breweries

Its summer time! (Yay!) And that means its time to take our favorite four legged friends out for a walk, a hike, and a romp at the local (or not so local) brewery. This is a map of all of the Dog Friendly Breweries in Pennsylvania. I will try and keep this updated to the best of my ability. And if you notice any breweries that SHOULD be on the list or SHOULD NOT be on the list, please e – mail us at thebeerthrillers@gmail.com. Thank you!

A word of note – as many of these breweries are dog friendly, that does not mean they are dog friendly throughout their brewery. Being production facilities and restaurants, many of these breweries have special rules on where and when dogs are allowed at their breweries. Its always a wise decision to check with the brewery before bringing your furry friend. (As an example – Troegs Independent Brewing in Hershey allows dogs at their lower “Beer Garden” section, but not inside or on their outdoor patio.)

Map of Dog Friendly Breweries in Pennsylvania

How to Use the Map

You can zoom in, and click on each of the beer mugs with the paw prints on them to see the breweries. This will call up their address via Google Maps, as well as any other information they have supplied to Google (phone numbers, websites, etc.). You can also save this map to your Google Maps so when you call up Google Maps these locations will be pinned onto your map as an overlay.

Updating

This map was last updated and posted on June 24th, 2024. Thank you!

Beerathon: 5K and Beerfest is Coming to Philly

Beerathon: 5K and Beerfest Coming to Philly

The first ever Beerathon 5K + Beer Fest – a one of a kind event focused on combining exercise and celebrating Pennsylvania based beer companies and beyond, is coming to Philly. Beerathon will take place Saturday, May 11 at The Navy Yard  in Philadelphia, PA and be composed of two parts: A 5k timed run and beer fest to follow.

Born out of training injuries that sidelined a group of friends from competing in the New York City marathon, they pivoted to something they were also good at: drinking beers. So, in 2011, in New York City, the Beerathon was born. A 26 bar, 26 beer adventure that captured the imaginations of beer lovers around the world. Now, over a decade of Beerathons around the country later, the newest challenge is born: Beers, Run, Ridiculous Fun, the Beerathon 5K + Beer Fest.

Beerathon kicks off with a totally doable 5K run (or walk) where participants will get that Runner’s High and earn a beer for each mile completed. After the race, patrons are invited to a ridiculously fun beer fest with an incredible list of curated beers, food trucks, live DJ and more on Marine Parade Grounds @ The Navy Yard.

Like beer more than running? Not ready to run or an old sports injury slowing you down? The Beerathon does not require any physical activity or participation in the 5K. Beer Fest Admission tickets are also available, separately. Choose your adventure: Beer Fest, 5K, or both! Beerathon is for everyone.

Fart Proudly: Writings of Benjamin Franklin You Never Read in School (writings by Benjamin Franklin)

Fart Proudly

How can you pass up a book titled “Fart Proudly” when browsing through a library book sale? I don’t think I could have spent 50 cents any better than picking this up. I would be doing myself, and all around me a disservice if I didn’t purchase it.

Thats one of the best things about these library booksales (and I love going to them, I go regularly to the Hershey Public Library Book Sale, the Hummelstown one at William H. and Marion C. Alexander Library, as well as the Middletown Public Library Book Sale, the Elizabethtown Public Library Book Sale, the Palmyra Library Book Sale, and others); you can find books like this. Books that you had no idea even existed let alone knew that you needed or wanted. And their just a quarter, or fifty scents, or at most two dollars.

Benjamin Franklin

From Wikipedia:

Benjamin Franklin FRSFRSAFRSE (January 17, 1706 [O.S. January 6, 1705][Note 1] – April 17, 1790) was an American polymath, a leading writer, scientist, inventor, statesman, diplomat, printer, publisher, and political philosopher.[1] Among the most influential intellectuals of his time, Franklin was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States; a drafter and signer of the Declaration of Independence; and the first postmaster general.[2]

Franklin became a successful newspaper editor and printer in Philadelphia, the leading city in the colonies, publishing the Pennsylvania Gazette at age 23.[3] He became wealthy publishing this and Poor Richard’s Almanack, which he wrote under the pseudonym “Richard Saunders”.[4] After 1767, he was associated with the Pennsylvania Chronicle, a newspaper known for its revolutionary sentiments and criticisms of the policies of the British Parliament and the Crown.[5]

He pioneered and was the first president of the Academy and College of Philadelphia, which opened in 1751 and later became the University of Pennsylvania. He organized and was the first secretary of the American Philosophical Society and was elected its president in 1769. He was appointed deputy postmaster-general for the British colonies in 1753,[6] which enabled him to set up the first national communications network.

He was active in community affairs and colonial and state politics, as well as national and international affairs. Franklin became a hero in America when, as an agent in London for several colonies, he spearheaded the repeal of the unpopular Stamp Act by the British Parliament. An accomplished diplomat, he was widely admired as the first U.S. ambassador to France and was a major figure in the development of positive Franco–American relations. His efforts proved vital for the American Revolution in securing French aid.

From 1785 to 1788, he served as President of Pennsylvania. At some points in his life, he owned slaves and ran “for sale” ads for slaves in his newspaper, but by the late 1750s, he began arguing against slavery, became an active abolitionist, and promoted the education and integration of African Americans into U.S. society.

As a scientist, his studies of electricity made him a major figure in the American Enlightenment and the history of physics. He also charted and named the Gulf Stream current. His numerous important inventions include the lightning rod, bifocals, and the Franklin stove.[7] He founded many civic organizations, including the Library Company, Philadelphia‘s first fire department,[8] and the University of Pennsylvania.[9] Franklin earned the title of “The First American” for his early and indefatigable campaigning for colonial unity. Foundational in defining the American ethos, Franklin has been called “the most accomplished American of his age and the most influential in inventing the type of society America would become”.[10]

His life and legacy of scientific and political achievement, and his status as one of America’s most influential Founding Fathers, have seen Franklin honored for more than two centuries after his death on the $100 bill and in the names of warships, many towns and counties, educational institutions, and corporations, as well as in numerous cultural references and a portrait in the Oval Office. His more than 30,000 letters and documents have been collected in The Papers of Benjamin Franklin.

Fart Proudly: Writings of Benjamin Franklin You Never Read in School GoodReads Blurb

Before we get into the book review, lets dive into the back of the book’s blurb, as per GoodReads:

A mention of flatulence might conjure up images of bratty high school boys or lowbrow comics. But one of the most eloquent—and least expected—commentators on the subject is Benjamin Franklin. The writings in Fart Proudly reveal the rogue who lived peaceably within the philosopher and statesman. Included are “The Letter to a Royal Academy”; “On Choosing a Mistress”; “Rules on Making Oneself Disagreeable”; and other jibes. Franklin’s irrepressible wit found an outlet in perpetrating hoaxes, attacking marriage and other sacred cows, and skewering the English Parliament. Reminding us of the humorous, irreverent side of this American icon, these essays endure as both hilarious satire and a timely reminder of the importance of a free press.

Fart Proudly: Writings of Benjamin Franklin You Never Read in School – GoodReads

Book Review: Fart Proudly: Writings of Benjamin Franklin You Never Read in School

“Fart Proudly: Writings of Benjamin Franklin You Never Read in School” is a compilation that presents a different side of one of America’s founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin. Edited by Carl Japikse, this collection brings together some of Franklin’s more humorous and lesser-known writings, showcasing his wit, irreverence, and intellectual playfulness.

This book serves as a reminder that Franklin was not just a statesman, scientist, and philosopher but also a master of satire and humor. The title itself, “Fart Proudly,” refers to an actual essay written by Franklin that satirically suggests scientific research into making flatulence smell pleasant. This essay, alongside others in the collection, highlights Franklin’s ability to use humor to provoke thought on societal norms and scientific inquiry.

The compilation includes a variety of pieces, such as essays, letters, and hoaxes, many of which might surprise readers familiar only with Franklin’s more formal and well-known public writings. For example, his witty letter to the Royal Academy of Brussels, where he mockingly proposes that research should be conducted to diminish the offensive smell of human flatulence, is both an exercise in satire and an ingenious critique of the sometimes absurd pursuits of scientific societies.

Japikse does a commendable job in curating these texts, not only by selecting content that illustrates Franklin’s playful side but also by providing context that helps modern readers understand the 18th-century references and humor. This contextual information is crucial, as it allows readers to appreciate the cleverness and impact of Franklin’s words during his time.

“Fart Proudly” also reveals Franklin’s progressive thoughts on personal freedoms and societal improvements. Even through his humorous writings, he challenged social norms, criticized political structures, and advocated for intellectual freedom and improvement of the human condition. His sharp wit was not merely for entertainment but often served a larger purpose, encouraging his readers to think critically and skeptically about the world around them.

Overall, “Fart Proudly” is not just an anthology of forgotten writings but a delightful glimpse into the playful and cunning mind of Benjamin Franklin. It’s an engaging read for anyone interested in American history, literature, or political satire. The book serves as a potent reminder of the power of humor in communication and the timeless quality of Franklin’s intellect and wit. This collection is recommended for readers who enjoy a mix of history, humor, and unconventional perspectives from one of America’s most influential figures.

Our Town Brewery – Facebook Post

In April of 2023 we broke the news here on the blog of their opening in Philadelphia – Our Town Brewery Expanding to Philadelphia, and in less than a year they are ready for their opening. First with the soft opening this weekend – February 3rd and 4th 2024; followed by their Grand Opening on Friday February 8th, 2024.

Currently Our Town Brewery is located in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. This additional taproom will be located at 1519 Ridge Avenue, Philadelphia.

Our Town Brewery’s New Taproom

Inside Our Town Brewery’s New Taproom

The new location at 1519 Ridge Avenue, Philadelphia will be a taproom only, meaning they won’t be producing any beer at this location. Their production will still be at the original location and brewery in Lancaster, PA. Our Town Brewery’s location will have a square footprint of 1,700 but the taproom will be 1,100 square feet. The bar – central to the location (directly upfront) will be 16 feet long (and able to seat 8), and then there will be tables dispersed throughout the taproom. The estimated seating will be 40 – 45 people. The bar itself will consist of 16 taps, including two beloved Lukr taps. They will serve outside cider and cocktails as well, befitting a PA Brewery’s License.

There is a front sidewalk and a 600 foot backyard – beer garden. These two areas will be able to seat an additional 20 people (estimated). Currently nearby is a dog park, and they will see if there is a way to be able to take their beer over to the dog park for those who wish to bring their furry friends out for a drink.

Beer Review: Koffee Kake Ale (Victory Brewing) https://thebeerthrillers.com/2024/01/17/beer-review-koffee-kake-ale-victory-brewing/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=beer-review-koffee-kake-ale-victory-brewing Wed, 17 Jan 2024 16:45:37 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=13584 All the Hype

All aboard the hype train! Choo Choo! C’mon everyone, get on board! So does this live up to the hype? Is it just a novelty beer? Should it be made again? Is it TASTY? Does it taste like coffee cake (or “koffee kake”)? So many questions! Hold on, we’ll get to all of them, settle down! I suggest you grab a beer, relax, and enjoy the review.

I first reported about Victory Brewing and TastyKake setting this up, collaborating, and announcing that it would be upcoming back in October 2023 – Victory Brewing Company and Tastykake Company Team Up for Koffee Kake Ale (October 5th, 2023) – and then, before its actual released, we discussed the upcoming special release at the brewery and its distribution here – Victory Brewing and Tastykake Collab Koffee Kake Ale to be Released on December 22nd.

Immediately the response was pretty overwhelming – “OMG” “whens it coming out” “how can we get it” “that looks amazing” “the Philly in me wants it so bad”, etc. I know Josh of MasterMindX Studios was jonesing for it.

So let’s dive into this and see if it lives up to the hype, shall we?

Beer Review

Beer: Koffee Kake Ale
Brewery: Victory Brewing Company
In Collaboration With: TastyKake
Style: Blonde Ale
ABV: 6%
IBU: 35
Untappd Description: This very tasty collaboration between Victory Brewing Company and Tastykake takes the delicious flavors of Tastykake’s Koffee Kake into a sweet ale with notes of pound cake & cinnamon

First, a quick recap of the beer: the Koffee Kake Ale by Victory Brewing Company is a unique collaboration with Tastykake, inspired by the flavors of Tastykake’s Koffee Kake Cupcakes. This blonde ale has a 6% ABV and 35 IBU. The beer has received mixed reviews, with some praising its distinct coffee flavor and its ability to provide a different beer-drinking experience. However, others have noted a bitter or less expected flavor.

Color and Appearance

The Koffee Kake Ale’s golden hue, typical of a blonde ale, and its moderate white head presented an alluring appearance in the glass, setting the stage for the unique flavor journey that was to follow. As I explored this brew further, I couldn’t help but reflect on the diverse range of opinions it has garnered. Some have lauded its distinct coffee-infused taste, while others have found its flavor profile to be unexpected or slightly bitter. This dichotomy of reactions only added to the intrigue of this unconventional ale.

Aroma

The aroma of the Koffee Kake Ale is reminiscent of coffee and cinnamon, providing a sensory prelude to its distinctive flavor profile. This smells like cracking open a bag of Tastykake Koffee Kakes, it is on point, and absolutely nails what it says it is. One of the worst things about some beers is when the label and the smell don’t match up, one tells you they get notes of X and Y, but you smell Z. Thats certainly not the issue here.

Taste

Upon savoring the Koffee Kake Ale, one encounters a blend of flavors that includes prominent notes of coffee, subtle hints of maple, and a touch of sweetness. This unique combination offers a truly distinctive and unconventional drinking experience. This is a type of beer that is going to get a lot of interest and different thoughts, reviews, and comments from people. A lot of people I talked to wished this was a stout rather than a blonde ale to begin with; but personally I think this works well as a blonde ale. Some have lauded its distinct coffee-infused taste, while others have found its flavor profile to be unexpected or slightly bitter. This dichotomy of reactions only added to the intrigue of this unconventional ale. The reviews have a bit mixed to say the least, some finding it surprisingly tasty, while others have mentioned that it brings a different flavor profile than expected. Personally I enjoyed it. It makes for a nice, one off beer. I couldn’t sit and drink the six pack of it all at once, but as a novelty, every once and a while beer, its fun and tasty. You get the notes of cinnamon, coffee, its sweet but not too cloying, its generally a well rounded beer all things considered. Josh (of MasterMindX Studios) who isn’t a big beer person, went out and got it and said he ‘enjoyed it’, that it ‘lived up to its name’ but that he could tell its a ‘gimmicky beer, and a novelty beer, but its not bad’. I think that is probably going to be the summation of this beer for most people.

My Untappd Rating: ***.75
Global Untappd Rating: 3.61 (as of 1.17.24)

In conclusion, the Koffee Kake Ale by Victory Brewing Company is a beer that defies convention and offers a truly distinctive flavor experience. Its collaboration with Tastykake and the unconventional taste make it an intriguing option for beer enthusiasts looking to explore new and unique offerings. Whether you find yourself captivated by its coffee-infused notes or intrigued by its unexpected flavor profile, this ale is undoubtedly one that warrants consideration for those seeking a new, different, unique beer. All in all, its at least worth a shot. The six pack of this at West Connection Beer Vault was 14.99$, so its not an unreasonable price by any means.

More Information on Victory Brewing Company

The following comes from Untappd. Victory Brewing Company is a regional brewery from Downingtown PA. They have 911 unique beers, and over 2.8 Million reviews, with a global average rating of 3.67 (as of 1.17.24). Their Untappd description reads: Co-founders Bill Covaleski and Ron Barchet The story of Victory Brewing Company starts on a school bus in 1973 when fifth-graders Ron Barchet and Bill Covaleski stepped aboard, on their way to a new school. The two became fast friends and remained so, even as they grew up and went to college on opposite coasts. Just months out of college, Bill’s appreciation of good beer and access to his father’s home brewing equipment inspired him to explore the hobby. That same year (1985), Bill gave Ron a home brewing kit as a Christmas gift. With that, both Bill and Ron developed their love of the craft, and a friendly rivalry grew between the two. The good-natured competition pushed Bill and Ron to become accomplished.

Brewery ARS Named in The 30 Best Breweries In The Country Right Now List https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/12/06/brewery-ars-named-in-the-30-best-breweries-in-the-country-right-now-list/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=brewery-ars-named-in-the-30-best-breweries-in-the-country-right-now-list Wed, 06 Dec 2023 17:48:38 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=13357
Brewery ARS

VinePair’s “The 30 Best Breweries In The Country Right Now” names Brewery ARS

VinePair, the popular beer, wine, alcoholic beverages, and liquor website, recently released a list of “The 30 Best Breweries In The Country Right Now”.

VinePair “surveyed beer bar professionals about the beer producers hitting right now. They consulted owners, beverage directors, and buyers from some of the country’s top beer pubs.” And they used this information to help determine and make the List of 30 Best Breweries in the Country Right Now.

Brewery ARS has two locations, both are in the greater Philadelphia area.

Good beer is pretty ubiquitous these days. To differentiate between the quality of the liquid can at times require more consideration for nuance than a pint should warrant. Deciding if you like a beer shouldn’t require any thought really. You like it or you don’t. Get a second or switch it up. When thinking about our ‘favorite’ current brewery, Cassie Cameron (our beer buyer) and myself immediately zoomed in close to home here in Philly. Provincial pride may have helped narrow our focus but the old cliched story about relationships and knowing who is behind your beer is more impactful today than it’s ever been.

VinePair: The 30 Best Breweries In The Country Right Now

Brewery ARS is high on a lot of people’s lists, VinePair isn’t the only one. If you go onto Reddit, or Quora, or Facebook and ask “Top Breweries in Philly” you are going to get Brewery ARS as an answer.

Brewery ARS is a brewery here in South Philly whose beer, especially their Wayne’s Pale Ale, could land on the top of any list of favorites, even if liquid was the only determining factor. Add in the fact that ego isn’t an adjunct in their process and that pretension is nowhere to be found in the brewery and you have a special recipe. The brewery is in a real-deal neighborhood and it fits right in. Only good people can make truly good beer. The people at ARS make truly good beer.
