Troegs Brewing Releasing Double Perpetual IPA

On August 19th, Troegs Independent Brewing will be releasing Double Perpetual IPA; their new once-yearly release. Taking the place of Hop Cyclone in the rotation of Double IPAs this year, Double Perpetual IPA will be making its official debut as a non-scratch beer.

Double Perpetual IPA was previously released last year as Scratch #500 alongside Scratch #501 – known as Triple Perpetual. (See: Troegs Brewing is Releasing Scratch 500 Double Perpetual and Scratch 501 Triple Perpetual.) Where Triple Perpetual IPA was a “happy mistake”, Double Perpetual IPA was released as an anniversary of their 500th scratch release (Troegs Brewing’s version of research and development), Double Perpetual IPA was an immediate fan favorite. So Triple Perpetual IPA became Scratch 501 and the new Double Perpetual IPA became Scratch 500.

Double Perpetual IPA will be released at the Troegs Brewery in Hershey PA on August 19th, 2024. It will be released in 16 oz cans as well as on draft. You’ll be able to find it in four packs and in cases, as well as in singles in the General Store at the brewery. (Unlike last year, there won’t be any limits on the beer.) It will be going out onto the market and will see distribution. You can use their Brew Finder to find Double Perpetual IPA near you. You can find it in their General Store (to go) or in their Tasting Room (for on site consumption) at their brewery, located at 200 Hersheypark Dr, Hershey, PA 17033.

This Monday (April 29th) Troegs Brewing is releasing the Summer of Sunshine Variety 15-Pack. This is a big explosive pack of fifteen cans – five different beers, three cans each – that will be perfect all summer long. This is a perfect beach pack or hanging out for a summer picnic.

Summer of Sunshine Variety Pack Includes:

It’s Easter again in Central Pennsylvania, and so its time yet again to take a look at some of our favorite Hoppy IPAs.

As Easter approaches, bringing with it the warmth of spring and the joy of renewal, it’s the perfect time to explore some of the hoppiest delights that Central Pennsylvania’s craft breweries have to offer. The region, known for its vibrant craft beer scene, produces a wide array of IPAs that promise to add an extra hop to your step this Easter. Whether you’re hunting for Easter eggs or just enjoying the springtime bloom, these five IPAs are sure to refresh and invigorate.

What if? Thats a question that gets asked a lot around Troegs Brewery in Hershey, PA. Answering these What If questions is how many of your favorite beers from the brewery have been made. Perpetual Darkness is no different.

Releasing today – December 7th, 2023 – Perpetual Darkness makes its return. An American style Barleywine, its one of the better barleywines in the Central PA area.

As per their Facebook announcement of it:

What if? It’s a question we often ask around here. What if Perpetual were a sort of dirty blonde barleywine? What if we toned down the bitterness but turned up the sticky citrus notes? Personally this is an absolutely fantastic Barleywine, and a great beer all around. I always look forward to its release and try and stock up on it when it comes out. Not enough breweries do barleywines, and its one of my absolute favorite styles.

Troegs Independent Brewing is Releasing Scratch 500 and Scratch 501 – Double Perpetual IPA and Triple Perpetual IPA

Troegs Independent Brewing Is Hitting a Milestone

Who would have guessed when Troegs Independent Brewing started their unique scratch system – their version of research and development – that here we would be; at Scratches 500 and 501

In recent years they’ve been pumping them out nearly weekly between their Scratch System and their even smaller R & D Scratch System. Leading up to their Oktoberfest Week they released several scratches all at once – Scratch 497: Schwarzbier, Scratch 498: Lemon Lime Radler, and one – that John Trogner himself said they would never make – Scratch 499: Rauchbier (a smoked beer).

Feels like it was just yesterday and I was drinking the Scratch 400 and reviewing it: Scratch 400 – Pre-Prohibition Lager. And here we are, three years later, celebrating the release of scratch 500 (and 501).

Scratches 500 and 501 will both be released on Thursday, October 19th, 2023 at the Troegs Brewery on Hersheypark Drive in Hershey, PA.

Scratch 500: Double Perpetual IPA

Scratch number 500 is Double Perpetual IPA. Take the Perpetual IPA you love… and double it! (Well, more like 1.5x it… for a real double Perpetual IPA… we’ll get to that in a bit).

Double Perpetual IPA will be clocking in at around 9-9.8% ABV. (Perpetual IPA is 7.5% ABV.) Double Perpetual IPA will be a brewery exclusive release on October 19th, 2023.

This is being both canned and kegged, so there will be four packs and cases, as well as draft at the brewery. Unlike the debacle that was the nightmarish release of the first batch of Double Nugget Nectar – this release; Double Perpetual IPA – will most likely have some sort of case or four pack limit.

Over the course of the run of Scratch Series Beers – numerous beers have “graduated” to become full fledged beers. Like Grand Cacao, Haze Charmer, Nimble Giant, and most recently Cyclops Teardrops.

Perpetual IPA (the original, the singular, the highest selling IPA in Pennsylvania) was one of the very first graduates of the Scratch Series and the research and development system used by Troegs Independent Brewing.

Expect this beer to have even more citrus, even more sticky and piney notes, and be even MORE Perpetual… it’ll be DOUBLE PERPETUAL!

Scratch 501 – Triple Perpetual IPA

Did you think Double Perpetual IPA was enough? No way! We need a Triple Perpetual IPA!

If you thought Perpetual IPA was a big IPA at 7.5% ABV…. and then if you thought Double Perpetual IPA at 9-9.8% ABV was a BIG BIG IPA…. then wait til you get ahold of Triple Perpetual IPA… rocking in somewhere from the 11 – 13 % ABV range (or so the legends go).

All of your favorite hops from Perpetual IPA – Cascade, Chinook, Nugget, and Citra are ramped up to the max for this big strong, powerful (triple) IPA.

This will be kegged only, and be released on draft only at the Troegs Brewery. You will be able to get crowlers and growler fills of it to go.

You can look for Triple Perpetual IPA to be released October 19th, 2023 when the Troegs Brewery opens at 11:30 AM.

The Hershey Bears Know How to Celebrate

The Hershey Bears know how to celebrate, and celebrate they did today! Earlier today (around 2 PM) they were at the Troegs Brewery in Hershey (just down the road from where they play at the Giant Center).

Several of the players came to the brewery today and brought the Calder Cup trophy with them. The team won the championship in a thrilling overtime win on June 21st at Coachella Valley, beating the Coachella Valley Firebirds 3 to 2 and winning the Best of 7 finals 4 – 3.

What better place to celebrate such a hard earned victory than your own home town brewery? And there is none bigger or better to celebrate in Pennsylvania than Troegs Independent Craft Brewing in Hershey, PA. Located right on HersheyPark Drive, right down the road from the famous HersheyPark itself and the Giant Center where the Hershey Bears play their home games.

The Calder Cup Championship is not an easy endeavor to win, just like any sports championship. The AHL (minor league to the NHL) is not easy, with all the trials and tribulations that normal sports have, the minor leagues have added issues with having less budget, having their players getting called up to the pros, and all kinds of other issues that plague smaller teams than major league sports have.

The Hershey Bears certainly deserved this year’s win; winning the championship on the road in Coachella Valley in overtime, in a best of seven series, in game seven. There’s no more dramatic way than that to win it!

The 2023 Calder Cup playoffs was the postseason tournament of the American Hockey League (AHL) to determine the winner of the Calder Cup, which is awarded to the AHL playoff champions.

The 2023 playoffs began on April 18, 2023, with the 23-team playoff format that was introduced in 2022. All teams except the bottom two teams of the Atlantic, North, and Central divisions, as well as the bottom three teams of the Pacific division qualified for the playoffs. Each division has a best-of-three series in the first round to determine the top 16 teams for the division semifinals, with various teams receiving byes based on regular season performance.^[1]

The 16 teams that remain—four from each division—will play a best-of-five series in the division semifinals, with the playoffs continuing with another best-of-five series for the division finals and a best-of-seven series for the conference finals and Calder Cup finals.

This is the Hershey Bears 12th Calder Cup Championship. Their last win before this was in 2010. They won Calder Cup championships in 1947, 1958, 1959, 1969, 1974, 1980, 1988, 1997, 2006, 2009, 2010, and now 2023.

The Hershey Bears are a professional ice hockey team based in Hershey, Pennsylvania, a town located 14 miles east of the state capital of Harrisburg. The current Bears club has played in the American Hockey League since the 1938–39 season making it the longest continuously operating member club of the league still playing in its original city.^[1]^[2]^[3]

The Bears organization currently serves as the primary development club for the NHL’s Washington Capitals since 2005-06. The Hershey Bears are possibly best known for their Teddy Bear toss every year. The Hershey Bears hockey team annually host a charity event called the Teddy bear toss. In 2018, they broke the world record for the amount of teddy bears collected, as they counted 34,798 in total. For 2019 they counted 45,650 bears. In the 2021 season, which was their 20th Teddy Bear Toss, they racked up 52,341 bears. In 2023, After the Bears lost 2–0 to the Bridgeport Islanders, the fans in attendance threw teddy bears with 5.4 seconds left. They counted 67,309 Stuffed teddy bears.

The Hershey Bears entered the 2023 Calder Cup Playoffs as the number one seed from the Atlantic Division.

They faced off against the Coachella Valley Firebirds in the Calder Cup Championships.

The Coachella Valley Firebirds were the number one seed overall and got to have home ice advantage for the finals. The series was structured to be two home, three away, two home in the home team’s favor.

The series was a home sweep until the final game. Coachella Valley won their first two games at home with commanding scores of 5 – 0 in game one, and 4 – 0 in game two.

The series then came to Hershey, and the Bears took charge, winning all three games. But all very close, tight victories. Game three they won 5 – 4 in overtime, in game four they won 3 – 2, and in game five they won 1 – 0 again overtime.

The series then went back to Coachella Valley with the Bears leading 3 – 2. Immediately in the first game back home, the Firebirds won with an impressive 5 -2 to even the series at 3 a piece. At this point in the series, the Firebirds had a total score of 20 to the Bears 11.

The final game didn’t start out great for the Bears, with the score being 1 – 0 and soon 2 – 1. But the Bears tied it up and made it 2 – 2, the third period saw no goals, which left yet another game (the third of the series) to go into overtime. With under four minutes to go in the first period of overtime, the Bears find the back of the net and “tickle the twine” for the victory, and securing their 12th Calder Cup Championship!

Getting back to the subject of the matter, some of the Hershey Bears players decided they would spend the day with the Calder Cup Championship today at Troegs Brewery in Hershey. Celebrating with their friends, enjoying delicious craft beer our of the prestigious trophy cup.

News of them being at the brewery spread quickly in Central PA and many came out to the brewery to see them hoist the trophy up and to drink from it. They even went around letting their fans sip from it.

As Conlan Budwash, former Troegs Brewery employee, and currently part owner of Pilger Ruh Brewing said on our Facebook page: “I drove right from Pottsville just to get a pic then they offered me a sip and I couldn’t say no.”

I have to agree with Conlan on this one, you can’t say no to that. Its not everyday that you get to drink out of a major sports trophy.

Plus to get to do it while drinking incredible craft beer (in this case, Troegs Independent Craft Brewing’s Perpetual IPA) at one of the best breweries in the state, how could it get any better?

What makes a great quarantine brewery?

The sole goal of this post is to start some discussion. As we enter our seventh week of state wide quarantine here in Pennsylvania, beer culture has been radically changed. The days of visiting and spending an afternoon at a local brewery with some friends are out the window for the time being. When was the last time you spent casually perusing the craft beer selection at your favorite bottle shop?

In this new reality, breweries have had to adapt fast. Take-out and curbside options are essential for those trying to get their goods into the hands of their local hop heads. So what makes for the peak quarantine beer experience? I can’t answer that as options are somewhat limited by necessity during this time. I can’t tell you if New Glarus is changing the game out in Wisconsin. What I can tell you is that Troeg’s is once again leading the pack in efficiency and experience here in Central PA.

Last week my fiance and I took the time out of our busy schedule (ha) to pay a visit to the brewery in Hershey. Ordering was super easy on their website, where in addition to beer, they also offer several dishes from their snack bar including the make at home pizza kits that we purchased. Be sure to give one of these a whirl as the sourdough crust tastes amazing and is hard to mess up for any pizza tossing neophyte. At any rate an hour after ordering we pulled into the usually crowded Troegs parking lot and saw the ten different stalls they have available. Picking up was simple. Back up into the stall of your choice, pop the trunk, then give them a call and a worker will run out and put the delivery directly in there. We were blown away by the execution. In a world where contact-less delivery has become the new norm, Troegs is diving in headfirst. I’m not sure if Chik Fil A could do it better.

As for the beer itself, I opted for a case of their 2020 Summer Anthology. During a time when the days can be monotonous, a variety pack can keep you sane. I am already familiar with the beers which include the newest Haze Charmer, a dry-hopped hazy pale ale that Troegs refuses to call a New England IPA, as well as older standbys Field Study IPA, Sunshine Pilsner, and their sales juggernaut Perpetual IPA. As the weather turns, these beers are all a perfect pairing for days mowing grass and grilling. Sunshine Pilsner in particular, a beer that I have at least overlooked as a “boring” choice, is much better than I remembered with a crisp and balanced flavor.
