CJ Corbin

On June 22 CJ Corbin was in a bad accident. The other driver ran a red light and hit CJ while driving his motorcycle. The other driver is only getting charged with a traffic violation but that is another story for another time. CJ has lost part of a leg because of this accident.

My next question is how can I help? No matter what the situation I think to myself; what am I capable of doing to change this terrible outcome? I feel this is where my passion for working for a nonprofit comes from. One thing that has me obsessed with the brewery community is the unwavering support your local breweries support the community.

It reminded me of all the support and help for the Hemauer family – Helping the Hemauer Family.

Benefit for CJ

The Callahan Kolsch from YAH Brew (100% of proceeds went to CJ)

This is a brewery community. It was no surprise that YAH Brew was going to be holding a fundraiser for CJ, also part of their kitchen staff. The event was held on Sunday June 30^th from 3 pm – 8 PM.

While attending the event we overheard friends of CJ’s worrying about how he is handling this. What I can gather; from looking around in the short time I was at the brewery; is that CJ has a very large community rallying behind him.

According to the YAH Brew Facebook page Performance Foodservice donated over 20 lbs of brisket, rolls slaw and BBQ Sauce. 100% of the sales of that food would go to CJ. The food was sold out by the time we got there at 6:20 PM.

There was a monumental feeling of support in the air as we enjoyed our beers. Our own Grandma SueAnn put together a silent auction basket to help out the cause. They had several silent auction items all from other local breweries and businesses.

There is a Go Fund Me Page to help with CJ’s care – GoFundMe: Support for CJames’ Recovery (PennLive’s Article about CJ’s Crash). The goal has been increased on the page since they have surpassed the goal and as of the time of writing this article is over $13k.

We got a strong feeling that this may be the first of other fundraisers for CJ. If it involves the love I felt for the community this evening, count us in!

Editor Ben notes: After the event ended, and the clean up began, we got to talking with Justin and Aimee about CJ, the event, how their Mount Joy location is doing, how their all doing with all the stresses and headaches and everything going on, as well as Hummelstown happenings, and so much more. With just ball park numbers, and not getting the exact specifics and everything, but from the various forms of donations tonight – food purchases, straight up cash donations, the silent auction purchases, tips to the guest bartenders, as well as the sales of The Callahan Kolsch; they raised roughly over 7,000$ today for CJ. As well as whatever was also donated via his GoFundMe page which there was QR codes for at the brewery.

All in all, the event was a complete and total success. Justin did also mention that The 1762 Tavern at The Warwick Hotel will likely be doing a fundraising event in the near future for CJ as well, with 20% of all sales during that event (or that day) will be going towards CJ’s medical bills.

The outpouring of support from the community has been incredible, with baskets for the silent auctions coming in from friends and family, as well as breweries such as Troegs Independent Brewing, Lancaster Brewing Company, BierHall Brewery, and more.

Beers We Enjoyed

We both of course immediately got The Callahan Kolsch (20 oz) to start off the evening. While they wrapped up the silent auction, I walked down to Jersey Mike’s to grab a cheesesteak for us to enjoy while having the beers, and then once I got back, we got another round of beers. Amy got a second Kolsch, while I got the Go, Ninja, Go! collab that YAH Brew did with Country Club Brewing and Weathered Souls Brewing (the stout I wanted to try at their Mount Joy soft opening but was unable to).

Its a Festivus for the Rest of Us! Happy Festivus everyone! How are you celebrating this tremendous holiday? Hopefully with some wonderful craft beer!

Today I’m taking a look at Treats of Strength by Icarus Brewing. As you can see in the background is the LEGO Seinfeld set.

Got this for the first time two years ago, and have been getting it each year since for Festivus. At the first time we had to do some finagling with Icarus Brewing’s in person shipping, and then had to get them from friends of friends.

Beer Review: Treats of Strength (Icarus Brewing)

Brewery: Icarus Brewing
Style: Stout – Imperial / Double Pastry
ABV: 12.4%
IBU: N / A
Untappd Description: Traditional Chocolate Nutella Babka inspired Pastry stout brewed with Two Row Barley, Pale Chocolate Malt, Oated and Wheated. Conditioned on Organic Cacao Nibs and Hazelnut Flour for an extended period.

Let’s Rumble!

Lets deep dive into this delicious beer. First up is always appearance, and this beer is certainly a beauty. No grievances here yet. This is jet black – black like Razor Ramon’s hair, black as in black hole black. The head is a nice light brown, pillowy, foamy head with varied bubble sizes. Head retention is on point, and it leaves wonderful lacing on the glass as I sipped.

Aroma is a wonderful chocolate, like we’re just inhaling a dessert. All the rich, warm, decadent dessert notes you would expert from a pastry stout shine through – chocolate, cocoa nibs, vanilla, hazelnut, nutella; it all kind of makes a medley of a wonderful aroma for your nose when you sniff into the glass.

This is a very rich, decadent and delicious beer. Its also as Josh would say “A big damn beer” clocking in at 12.4% ABV, and ready to give you the liquid courage you need to best your old man at Feats of Strength. There’s no tinsel to this beer to distract you – its just pure dessert in a glass, you can tell its a pastry stout through and through. So gather around the Festivus pole and lets enjoy this sipper of a beer. This is full body, with a good heavy mouthfeel, a bit thick, slightly syrupy but not cloying and very minimal on the aspect of syrup. The chocolate / cocoa nibs shine through the best. The hazelnut is there like a hidden surprise peeking out as you sit back, relax after telling everyone all of your grievances, and enjoy yourself a big beer. This is a great Festivus – December 23rd – or winter beer, maybe even a Christmas beer if your into that kind of thing. Start a yule log or a fire going, put your feet up, and slowly sip this one long into the night. Its even perfect after a long shift at work where you only get home at nearly 11 PM at night after dealing with lots of humans all day (not that I would know or anything). If you love big stouts (12.4% ABV after all) that are heavy hitters, with not a ton of booze flavor, but a lot of real beer flavor – than get to Icarus Brewing and pick up some Treats of Strength to give you the strength and courage you need to defeat your dad in the Feats of Strength!

Holiday Weekend and Bomber Bottles

While mentally preparing for this long holiday weekend I stared at the collection of bomber bottles on top of my rolltop desk in my living room. It feels like they are taking up lots of space and I just simply must decrease the number of bottles on top of my desk. Holiday weekends are perfect for that.

I decided to crack into the Captain Precious from Alementary. We picked up this one when we had to stop by since after having Scarlet. We loved celebrating her birth by toasting one of our favs from them, Figgy Pudding.

When we posted on IG about her birth they graciously offered another bottle in celebration. Captain Precious was another bottle we had to get on the way out the door.

Captain Precocious by The Alementary

Captain Precious is a 12.5% Barleywine and the perfect way to kick off the holiday weekend and we paired it with some spicy tacos. It has an average rating on Untapped at 3.90 and that is way too low for this quality Barleywine. It is described on Untapped as “Marjie’s first beer! This Barleywine is made with peanut butter and heaps of fresh blueberries and fermented with Kveik yeast for a touch of overripe tropical fruit. “The perfect mix of some peanut butter and blueberries it was delicious. Pastry Parkway – Cannoli

We then finished off the night with a stout we bought way before we got pregnant, two of the Pastry Stouts from the Pastry Parkway line from Fourscore Beer Co in Gettysburg. All four pastry stouts come in with a 15% ABV. Two of the four we got were the cannoli and the s’mores Cupcake. The other two I wish I got my hands on were Blueberry Marshmallow Muffin and Chocolate Cherry Caramel Croissant. The Pastry Parkway was a collab with Wolf Brewering Company in Mechanicsburg, PA and Fourscore Beer Company in Gettysburg, PA.

We started with the Cannoli Pastry Stout and we decided to pair it with some chocolate peanut butter cup Turkey Hill ice cream. It was a warm evening and I would be going for ice cream so we were lucky it was a delicious combo. Then, as I sat down to write this, we cracked open the S’more Cupcake Pastry Stout and stole Ben’s Zebra cakes to go with it.

I know feel accomplished getting a few things cleaned up around the house by decreasing the bomber stash. I can’t wait for the next holiday weekend! Happy Birthday America!

Some Explosive Good Beers

All of these – from the Figgy Pudding we had in honor of our child’s birth; to the Captain Precocious we had picked up at The Alementary (one of our favorite breweries), to the two Fourscore Beer Co and Wolf Brewing Company collabs (Pastry Parkway – Cannoli and Pastry Parkway – S’mores Cupcake) were “explosively good”. (See what I did there?)

So I have to ask you all again… how many bombers do you have sitting at home, cellaring in your basement, and waiting to be drank? (Don’t worry, despite polishing these off, we still have plenty more to go!)

The idea that certain stouts can aid in breastfeeding isn’t new. Historically, dark beers like stouts have been thought to boost milk production due to their higher levels of barley and hops. While the scientific evidence supporting this is limited, many mothers swear by this practice.

Top Stouts Often Recommended

Here are a few stouts that are frequently mentioned in discussions about breastfeeding:

Guinness Draught

Guinness is often recommended due to its relatively low alcohol content and rich nutritional profile. This classic Irish stout is smooth and easy to drink, making it a popular choice.

Six Stouts to Try While Breastfeeding

Stout isn’t just a delicious dark beer that can drink like a meal. It’s also long been believed to be a breastfeeding new mom’s best friend. While some studies warn against nursing mothers consuming alcohol, many doctors believe the occasional drink doesn’t hurt. In certain cultures, dark beer is even considered beneficial: It’s been used to increase the flow of breast milk since the ancient Egyptians started brewing beer 5,000 years ago.

There’s some science behind this belief. Barley, a main ingredient in stout, contains a polysaccharide that increases prolactin, a milk-production hormone. Oats, another common ingredient in stouts, are also thought to promote healthy milk supply, as is vitamin-B-heavy brewer’s yeast. Of course, a beer with a mild proof is the best option for new moms––milk stouts tend to have reasonable ABVs.

These six creamy milk and oatmeal stouts will please those feeding tiny humans from their own bodies and anyone else who appreciates good beer.

1. Copper Kettle Milk Stout ($11 per six-pack)

Made with actual lactose, the ingredient that gives milk stout its name and creamy character, this brew is sweet and malty. While it doesn’t actually taste like milk, this Denver beer has a chocolate milk character and velvety mouthfeel that’s pretty irresistible. At 5.6% ABV, why resist?

2. Finkel & Garf Oatmeal Milk Stout ($9 per six-pack)

From craft-beer-loving Colorado, this oatmeal milk stout is less sweet than a typical milk stout but not quite as heavy as an oatmeal stout. It drinks more like a main course than dessert, but isn’t overly filling. At 5.5% ABV, it shows satisfying malty, coffee, and chocolatey notes.
