After a one year hiatus – the Cushwa Brewing Company Anniversary Beer Fest is back. Two years ago in 2022 they had their 5th Anniversary Beer Fest; and now in January 2024 – its back with their 7th Anniversary Celebration.

Unlike the 5th Anniversary Event where Amy and I took the Friday off, and made a huge brewery trip out of it, this year, we’re just going to be going down Saturday morning, hitting up the brewfest, spending the night, and then hitting a few breweries on the way home Sunday. Still a lot of fun, but possibly a little bit more laid back. (Possibly.)

This is a generated list using Perplexity AI. It is based off of an aggregate of values – mostly rating system based sites like Untappd, Yelp, TripAdvisor, Beer Advocate, and Rate My Beer. It also factors into play certain key blogs – VinePair, our website (The Beer Thrillers), BiPA, and more.

Since its middle of December, I thought it’d be a good time to take a look back at the best breweries of 2023. This list is just breweries in PA, and just for statistical purposes the year of 2023. It was ran through Perplexity AI and put in a few different times to make sure the list was accurate and not just a sequence of things, it was told to use user ratings and check in apps, and it was told to just include 2023 and just to include Breweries in PA. It was also done several times with the same parameters to ensure that the AI was selecting the same breweries and not just throwing out random breweries. The AI also provided its sources.

A (Keystone) State of Mind

In a bit of a twist of the Billy Joel Song – “New York State of Mind” – New Trail Brewing Company and Other Half Brewing Company are releasing their newest collaboration together – Keystone State of Mind.

They previously worked together on “Pennsylvania Nights”; a wonderful and fantastic New England Hazy IPA.

And here they are – back at it together – releasing another New England Hazy IPA collaboration: Keystone State of Mind.

Keystone State of Mind

Keystone State of Mind is a collaboration between New Trail Brewing Company and Other Half Brewing Company. Other Half is one of the preeminent New England Hazy IPA makers on the East Coast; and New Trail is one of the haziest IPA makers in Pennsylvania. Other Half recently moved into PA adding another brewery to their collection.

So it seems like a perfect fit for the two of them to collaborate on making (another) New England Hazy IPA.

Keystone State of Mind clocks in at 8.7% ABV, is considered a Double New England Hazy IPA, and has no IBU listed. The malt bill is Pilsner, Oats, and White Wheat – which gives it that typical, perfect, soft, cloud like hazy mouthfeel. Each can is overflowing with hops – Motueka, Simcoe, Nectaron, and Nelson Sauvin; so a total hop bomb. This gives it notes of gummy peach rings, Pinot aromatics, and dank tropicals.

The beer is already available throughout the states, with some beer distributors already having it on their shelves (and not for long if its anything like the Pennsylvania Nights release). You can also find it at New Trail’s Brewery location in both 16 oz cans and on draft. Other Half’s Philadelphia location also has it in cans and on draft. The release should follow the New Trail distribution pattern and footprint, not Other Half’s. Other Half’s non-Pennsylvania locations will not have it available.

Another End of the Year Article

Yes, this is yet again – ANOTHER – end of the year article. Part of a series that Untappd has put out, and I’ve followed and kept an interest and an eye on. (I do have to admit, despite nearly failing high school math, I’ve always enjoyed statistics, data, and how to read and interpret all the information.) You can see our previous articles of the Untappd series here:

I even went and made my own chart (or graph or whatever) on Canva using the information from the beers article (The Top 10 Craft Beers With the Most 5-Star Check-Ins of 2022). So be sure to check out the articles above to see the data and how they correlate.

This one is a little bit different. This list is looking at unique output. How many new beers did these breweries create (and added to Untappd) just this year. Its an interesting look at not just volume, but how much new volume these breweries have created.

Now, what constitutes a ‘new’ beer for Untappd can be a bit nebulous. If I make Beer A, and then make Beer B and just call it Beer B (2022) technically thats a new beer as far as Untappd unique beers would be concerned. Even though its Mad Elf, Mad Elf (2021), and Mad Elf (2022). In that example, Untappd would treat it as three unique beers, despite obviously its the same beer.

So let’s take a look at the latest Untappd ‘end of the year’ list and article:

The Top 10 Breweries With the Most Beers Created in 2022

• 10. Orchestrated Minds Brewing (Fort Lauderdale, FL) – 186 Unique Beers Added
• 9. Humble Sea Brewing (Santa Cruz, CA) – 187 Unique Beers Added
• 8. Burial Beer Company (Asheville, NC) – 195 Unique Beers Added
• 7. Three Notch’d Brewing (Charlottesville, VA) – 204 Unique Beers Added
• 6. TailGate Brewing Company (Nashville, TN) – 205 Unique Beers Added
• 5. Imprint Beer Company (Hatfield, PA) – 206 Unique Beers Added
• 4. Mirror Twin Brewing (Lexington, KY) – 215 Unique Beers Added
• 3. Odell Brewing Company (Fort Collins, CO) – 224 Unique Beers Added
• 2. Other Half Brewing Company (Brooklyn, NY) – 281 Unique Beers Added
• 1. Tree House Brewing Company (Charlton, MA) – 362 Unique Beers Added

Data

The lower numbers are relatively close to each other, 186, 187, 195, then a small jump to 204 and then its followed by 205 and 206, and then a bigger jump to 281 and then the final jump to 362. So this is another list that Tree House Brewing Company has made (thats three now – they were also included in the most five star check ins by beer and most five star check ins by brewery), Other Half also has made it onto two lists now as well (also with most five star check ins by brewery).

Two breweries from Pennsylvania made the list. Imprint Beer Company made the list with 206 unique beers, and multi – state brewery Other Half Brewing Company (New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington D. C. ) made it with 281 unique beers.

All data was compiled from January 1st through December 9th 2022.

End of the Year

As I said in our last end of the year article: What Regions Drank the Most (2022):

Its the end of the year, and what that usually entails is a whole slew of “end of the year lists”. Top 10 this… top 38 that… top 69 (heeheehee) this and that…. Top 314.181928102810 Pies, etc.

We are going to post a few this year. In the past we’ve kinda shied away from posting these sorts of articles, because the metrics and information is kind of… biased in a way. Its basically just reading off Untappd’s information and lists and going with it. For example, recently Breweries in PA did a final end of the year Top 10 Pennsylvania Breweries listing article, using Untappd’s information, and well… it was received as well as you can imagine. Mainly because they didn’t put in any filters or restrictions or limits to it. So just before the list was posted, Country Club Brewing Company (see an article about them here: Country Club Brewing Company Announces Opening) had their grand opening. They had roughly 1,000 check – ins on the Untappd app, and being a grand opening most of them were very favorable (mostly four caps or better). So needless to say this put a lot of readers and breweries themselves up in arms about it. It actually listed them at number three (out of ten). (The other thing that irked most was that Other Half Brewing Company was listed, when they have several non – Pennsylvanian locations.)

But… I’m gonna go out on a limb and use Untappd to post some of these lists. If nothing else we can look back at them as just data charts and analyze them for the statistics. At best, they prompt some conversation and discussion (and we all know how well that goes on the internet).

Part Two of Two

This is the second part of two articles that are pretty closely similar. As I said in the first part (The Top Ten Breweries with the Most Five Star Ratings of 2022) Untappd through their blog has just put out a lot of “End of the Year” lists / articles. I’m not going to rehash all of them, but the ones I found interesting I am covering here on The Beer Thrillers blog. This one ties in with the other one very nicely, and I think we can kind of correlate the two to get some better ideas and information. The first part was about the breweries themselves. This one is about the craft beers in particular.

Between these two articles we should be able to take some looks and figure out some trends from 2022. Discussing the first article with my friend Drew and Josh, I came to realize that Yuengling being second probably represented a lot of “nostalgic” love for Yuengling and people giving their Traditional Lager a high five star rating – for reasons like nostalgia, their ‘hometown’ (even if they live in the corners of the state), its the beer their dad grew up drinking and so did they (before getting into craft beer proper), and who else knows why. I thought the other big thing was how much of a jump it went from the second spot to the first spot – a 32,000 check in increase. When number two is at 19,000, and spot one is at 51,000; thats a crazy big jump.

So let’s see how that then plays into which of the craft beers themselves were checked in with five star ratings the most.

The Top 10 Craft Beers With the Most 5 – Star Check – Ins of 2022

• 10. Duvel (Duvel Moortgat) – 3,796 Check Ins
• 9. Hopslam Ale (2022) (Bell’s Brewery) – 3,910 Check Ins
• 8. Focal Banger (The Alchemist) – 4,044 Check Ins
• 7. Trappist Westvleteren (Brouwerij DeSint – Sixtusabdij Van Westvleteren) – 4,097 Check Ins
• 6. King Julius (Tree House Brewing Co.) – 4,574 Check Ins
• 5. Zombie Dust (Three Floyds Brewing Co.) – 4,999 Check Ins
• 4. Two Hearted Ale (Bell’s Brewery) – 5,823 Check Ins
• 3. Traditional Lager (Yuengling Brewing) – 8,529 Check Ins
• 2. Heady Topper (The Alchemist) – 9,994 Check Ins
• 1. Pliny the Elder (Russian River Brewing Company) – 10,635 Check Ins

So this is a bit interesting. Despite coming in first with 51,000 check ins that were five star, Tree House only has one beer on the top ten list. Bell’s Brewery and The Alchemist both have two. (Bell’s Brewery was also number two on the craft brewery list, and The Alchemist was number five.)

Data

So giving the data above, I made a quick chart / graph on Canva to show five of the ten beers. I decided on the two breweries that had two beers listed – Bell’s Brewery and The Alchemist; as well as including the number one – Russian River; and included Tree House since they were the number one from the previous article (The Top Ten Breweries with the Most Five Star Ratings of 2022), and chose Yuengling lastly just because they are the “local boys” and an interesting factoid (given how people’s views on them being ‘craft’ are).

I totaled up the ten beers and it came out to be 60,401 check ins. I then did the math to figure out what percentage these five breweries were in the total. As you can see they make up a total of 78.6% of the total. That leaves three other breweries making up the remaining 21.4%.

Another interesting note – if Zombie Dust had just one more five star check in, they would have had 5,000 exactly.

End of the Year

As I said in our last end of the year article: What Regions Drank the Most (2022):

Its the end of the year, and what that usually entails is a whole slew of “end of the year lists”. Top 10 this… top 38 that… top 69 (heeheehee) this and that…. Top 314.181928102810 Pies, etc.

We are going to post a few this year. In the past we’ve kinda shied away from posting these sorts of articles, because the metrics and information is kind of… biased in a way. Its basically just reading off Untappd’s information and lists and going with it. For example, recently Breweries in PA did a final end of the year Top 10 Pennsylvania Breweries listing article, using Untappd’s information, and well… it was received as well as you can imagine. Mainly because they didn’t put in any filters or restrictions or limits to it. So just before the list was posted, Country Club Brewing Company (see an article about them here: Country Club Brewing Company Announces Opening) had their grand opening. They had roughly 1,000 check – ins on the Untappd app, and being a grand opening most of them were very favorable (mostly four caps or better). So needless to say this put a lot of readers and breweries themselves up in arms about it. It actually listed them at number three (out of ten). (The other thing that irked most was that Other Half Brewing Company was listed, when they have several non – Pennsylvanian locations.)

But… I’m gonna go out on a limb and use Untappd to post some of these lists. If nothing else we can look back at them as just data charts and analyze them for the statistics. At best, they prompt some conversation and discussion (and we all know how well that goes on the internet).

Part One of Two

Untappd just recently spat out about ten different “end of the year” articles, and some are less noteworthy or interesting as others. I thought this and the part two to this article, were both interesting; interesting enough to collate it into an article here for my blog.

The first one of the two articles is simply: “The Top 10 Craft Breweries with the Most Five Star Check Ins”. They did a follow up article: “The Top 10 Craft Beers with the Most Five Star Check Ins”. They don’t state though how exactly the data is integrated. If for example, I have Mad Elf as a five star beer and I check into it thirty six times, does that count as thirty six – or because I am just one person; does it count as just one?

I think the list is pretty obvious in some ways. I think we can all guess at least several of the breweries that will be on the list. I think the check in totals are illuminating, especially when you get to the lower (the better) numbers. The comparison from Number Two to Number One is really incredible.

I think with this and the next article (the part two) it should be interesting to take a look at the numbers and put the two together.

• 8. Sierra Nevada Brewing (Chico, CA) – 12,142 Check Ins
• 7. Samuel Adams (Boston, MA) – 13,398 Check Ins
• 6. Toppling Goliath (Decorah, IA) – 14,014 Check Ins
• 5. The Alchemist (Stowe, VT) – 14,737 Check Ins
• 4. Other Half Brewing Co. (Brooklyn, NY) – 15,900 Check Ins
• 3. Russian River Brewing Company (Windsor, CA) – 18,276 Check Ins

Data

Look at that jump from number two to number 1! A 32,000 some totals jump! That’s really incredible. Pennsylvania did make the list with Yuengling Brewery hitting at number 9. And I guess technically again with both Samuel Adams and Other Half Brewing with Pennsylvania now having a production facility for Sam Adams and a brewery for Other Half. This information is all based on Untappd and their data keeping and their app. The statistics ran from January 1st through December 9th of 2022.

Grand Opening This Friday

This Friday is the grand opening of Other Half Brewing Company’s Philadelphia location. Located at the previously used brewery of Goose Island.

Just an hour ago, Other Half posted on their Instagram the above picture with the below quote:

Alright, Philly, let’s do this! We’re beyond thrilled to finally open our doors this weekend, starting this Friday at 3pm. We’ll be slinging your favorite OH brews with tasty bites from the kitchen ‘til 10 pm. We will have 20 lines of OHB beers, and plenty of cans and bottles to go. ⁠

We’re ramping up to being fully operational as fast as we can. This weekend we’ll be open Friday 3-10, Saturday 12-9, and Sunday 12-8. We will be closed Monday and Tuesday next week and reopened Wednesday-Sunday hours to be announced next week. ⁠

Other Half Philly (Instagram)

July Announcement

The announcement of their opening is very welcome news. They had been rumored to be moving into Philly for a while, and had made the announcement of their moving into the Goose Island Brewery back in July 2021. With the initial hope of a late Winter 2021/early winter 2022 opening.

The bones of the space are great and over the coming months, we’ll refresh the indoor and outdoor areas and work on sourcing food partners.

Five Days Away

We are five days away from the five year celebration. So its a perfect time to run it down and get hyped about it. Sadly, the VIP and the general admission tickets have been sold out (for quite some time), but for those of us able to go (myself and writer friend) it will certainly be an event not to be missed. The first brew fest of the year (for us anyway) and we can’t wait for it!

This one certainly looks like a doozy and one that will be remembered for quite some time.

Let’s take a look at the brewery’s Facebook photos as a gallery to get an idea:

What the Event Is

Firstly, as you can see – the VIP and General Admission are both sold out. You might be able to find tickets second hand online, but be very cautious of scammers. Cushwa has posted on their photos page that they have caught some people selling fake or scammed up tickets.

The VIP session is 75$ and lasts from 12 – 5, (giving the attendee an extra hour), as well as a second glass and a specialty bottle. The bottle alone really makes the extra 25$ worth value right there, but add in the perks of an extra hour of drinking, plus a second glass, and its definitely worth it.

The general admission is from 1 – 5, comes with a commemorative taster glass (like most brewfests do), and allows unlimited sampling. For both sessions there is over 50 breweries, which we will get to in just a bit.

There is also DD (designated driver / aka ‘non drinking buddy’) access to the event as well for just 5$.

So, this is one hell of a list of breweries that is coming and serving up liquid gold for everyone. With many stand – outs.

Woooooooheeeeeeeeeeeee!!! Thats a line up! Some stand out favorites and interests are definitely Adroit Theory, Barrel Culture, Bearded Iris, Deciduous, Dewey Beer Co, Finback, Fourscore, Good Word, Mortallis, Ocelot, Oozlefinch, Other Half, RAR, Southern Grist, Triple Crossing, and Vitamin Sea.

But you certainly can’t go wrong with any from that list! Its a nice combination of Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, and Pennsylvania breweries, as well as some other heavy hitters thrown into the mix.

Food

The food options are:

• Rad Pies

So there is some variety and enough food choices to be had for the four or five hour sessions. (If you see me veering for the lobster in a drunken haze, just kick me away so I don’t trigger my shellfish allergies. Thanks!)

Anything Else Fun?

There will also be a DJ on hand – DJ Bizzy, and just recently announced Thicc Bois Glass will also be on hand selling some dope hand blown glassware. They’ve worked with Tattered Flag and a few other breweries in the past to make some really fantastic glassware.

Pumped

Are you pumped? Are you going? I’m pumped. I have finally gotten my days changed at work – and now have off Friday and Saturday (rather than Thursday and Friday); only took me 10 years of working at the casino, to finally get up to having off a weekend day. I also put in a special request and got the Sunday off for travel home.

With the can release for Burley Oak the day before (Friday – Jan. 21st), we are looking to make this quite a trip. Coming down from the Hummelstown area to get to Burley Oak, and then make our way over towards Cushwa (a bit over three hours across Maryland, after driving three hours to Burley Oak), we will be stopping and hitting some fabulous breweries on the way. Then spending the night in the Williamsport area, before stopping by Antietam and maybe Monocacy Battlefields (again), and a few more breweries before making our way back home up into Pennsylvania.
