The craft beer landscape of Central Pennsylvania is about to lose a beloved player. Iron Lion Brewery, nestled in the heart of Penn Township at the Markets at Hanover, has announced its impending closure on December 7, 2024. This news strikes a somber chord for local beer enthusiasts and music lovers alike.

Iron Lion’s journey began in 2021 as the Public House at the Markets, evolving into Iron Lion Brewery in late 2023. In its short but impactful run, the brewery has become a cornerstone of the Hanover community, blending the art of brewing with the soul of live music.

More Than Just a Brewery

Iron Lion wasn’t just about the suds; it was a cultural hub. The venue’s indoor stage has been a platform for local talent, hosting over 14 musical events in November alone. These performances, many free to attend, have been the backdrop to countless memories made over pints of craft beer.

The Final Countdown

As the clock ticks towards December 7, Iron Lion urges patrons to use any outstanding gift cards, including those from its Public House days. It’s a last call that beer aficionados won’t want to miss.

A Hopeful Horizon

While the brewery’s closure is imminent, the spirit of Iron Lion may live on. The owners have hinted at future partnerships to continue supporting live music in Hanover. This glimmer of hope suggests that while one chapter is ending, another may be brewing.

The Bigger Picture

Iron Lion’s closure is a stark reminder of the challenges facing craft breweries in Central PA. As we’ve seen with recent closures like Aurochs Brewing Company in Emsworth and Mad Princes Brewing in Doylestown, the craft beer industry is as volatile as it is vibrant.

Parting Thoughts

To the Iron Lion family: your contribution to Hanover’s craft beer scene and music community has been immeasurable. As you pour your final pints, know that your legacy will ferment in the memories of those you’ve served.

For craft beer lovers in Central PA, this is a call to arms. Support your local breweries, savor every sip, and remember that behind every pint is a story of passion, community, and craftsmanship. The craft beer scene in our region is rich and diverse, from the storied halls of Tröegs in Hershey to the innovative tanks of Axemann in Bellefonte. Let’s raise a glass to Iron Lion and to the future of craft beer in Central Pennsylvania.

Cheers, and may your glasses always be half full.

Three Beards Brewing Announce Closure https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/12/19/three-beards-brewing-announce-closure/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=three-beards-brewing-announce-closure Wed, 20 Dec 2023 03:40:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=13332 Three Beards Brewing to Cease Operations at the End of the Year

Just a bit ago, at 9:50 PM, Three Beards Brewing posted to their social media announcing the end of operations at the end of the year. They announced they will be closed effectively January 1st, 2024.

They posted a simple text message, with the above image that gave much more clarity. Their message and post could be found here:

Big sad 😢 Please keep the comments section respectful.

We will be open until the New Year. Help us kick some beer and food.

Three Beards Brewing – Facebook Post

I came home from work to find this, and was very saddened by this news. One of Amy and SueAnn’s favorite venues was Spyglass Ridge Winery; and then once the brewery opened – by extension they also loved the brewery.

Its a beautiful scenic view, beautiful location, and a wonderful venue.

By the wording of the announcement it does look like the winery and the music venue will continue to be in operation – it will be just the brewery that will be closing, and with that it appears the restaurant as well.

The image announcement reads:

It’s with a knot in our stomachs and heavy hearts that we announce Three Beards Brewing will not continue operations into the new year. Its been a wild ride through the ups and downs of covid and an ever-changing economic landscape. The above average cost of food, labor, brewing ingredients, and utilities certainly made things difficult. We also all have careers and young families that need to see more of us, and tying to run a business in addition to that proved to be more of a daunting task than we could have imagined. The support of our families ultimately let us start this venture and they deserve the world.

We would like to thank each and every soul that has supported us along the way. Whether it was dining with us, buying our beers on the shelves, sharing a beer at one of the backyard concerts, waiting in line at beer fests for a sample, or just simply spreading the good word of a few guys trying to turn a hobby Into something special.

Thank you to our current and previous staff as all have left a lasting positive mark on Three Beards. They really are the face of this business and will undoubtedly have some difficult times coming with this unfortunate news. Please be patient and kind to them in these last few weeks.

Thanks to Tom and Tammy Webb for giving us a shot to work towards the goal of making this one of the most memorable brewpubs in central Pennsylvania.

Please come see us during our remaining days to help liquidate remaining beer and food. We would love to see our friends one last time, We may run out of certain menu items, but we will try to continue providing business as normal these last few weeks.

We stopped selling ft cards as soon as the decision was made. Please try to use these by the end of the year. If you are unable to use them in that time frame, please message us and we will do our best to make it right.

Three Beards Brewing – Facebook Post

This is certainly surprising news. And very unfortunate news as well. Amy, SueAnn, Scarlet, and I got to do a Sunsbury brewery hopping trip back in October; our trip included Three Beards and the beers were good and the food great and the atmosphere there was wonderful as always.

They will be missed.

Beards, Brews, and BBQs

Beards, Brews, and BBQs has made a very poignant remark to the announcement, and I am posting his heartfelt comment here:

This one hurts man. Three Beards Brewing felt like another home close to home for us. A lot of memories here for our family. The Mrs and little one are sleeping, but are going to be devastated when they hear.

The building itself is one to behold. One of the best looking breweries you are going to find with one of the nicest views, and it was just a short drive for us. I remember the first time we saw the building. We were looking for Spyglass Ridge Winery to do the first River Rat Brew Trail to try the beer. We came up on this huge building, got out of the car, and thought that was the brewery. The door was open, we walked in, and were amazed at how nice the building was. Turns out that wasn’t where we needed to go as no one was in there, and in the spirit of not having the 👮‍♂️ called for trespassing, we drove down the hill to the winery where the beer was sold at that time. But, we left thinking about that building, and what it could be.

Fast forward, and it turns out to be Three Beards Brewing. The food, beer and atmosphere was awesome! Heck, I was even close to having a dream come true and ending up on a beer can! But, that isn’t what is important now.

To Ken, my guy, do not give up the dream of brewing. You have massive creativity, and a heart and passion to match. Keep doing what you love my friend ❤️

To Colin, our favorite server, thank you for being an awesome server and dude. Make sure you hit me up on Destiny 2, and to Ms Natalie, one of the little one’s teachers, thank you as well.

To all the waitstaff, cooks, brewers, and everyone in between, BBB knows you all land on your feet. From being the first place we went after we had Covid the first time, to the time you wrote a get well message on the pizza boxes for the little one when she was sick, and only wanted your pizza. Thank you for that and everything in between.

Sad day, but thanks for the memories…

Closings and Openings and Expansions and Closings

A lot of industry talk has been made about closures and closing announcements, not just in 2023 but in 2022 as well. Some are discussing all of the great expansions and new breweries and growth as well. And this is wonderful and essential and optimism is great to keep forward. But real discussions need to be had about the economic nature of the industry as a whole, and more research needs to be done on key statistics, information, and data.

Hopefully 2024 will see a trend of upward growth for the industry. I hold out hope, and will keep my fingers and toes and beer bottles crossed.

Closings and expansions will actually be one of several topics we’ll be discussing with Lew Bryson on his podcast in the upcoming weeks. Announcement of our podcast will be made in the next few days.

Three Beards Brewing

For more information on Three Beards Brewing – the following comes from Untappd. Three Beards Brewing (Pennsylvania) is listed as a brew pub in Sunsbury, PA. They have 166 unique beers and exactly 6,900 ratings with a global average rating of 3.78 (as of 12.19.23). Their Untappd description reads: “Started in 2011 as a bunch of reckless homebrewers with a thirst for chaos and creativity. Fast forward many years and we are finally finishing construction of our 15bbl brewpub on the grounds of Spyglass Ridge Winery in Sunbury, PA. Open now!”

Grand Opening: LoveDraft’s Brewing Company – August 7th, 2021 https://thebeerthrillers.com/2021/08/06/grand-opening-lovedrafts-brewing-company-august-7th-2021/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=grand-opening-lovedrafts-brewing-company-august-7th-2021 Fri, 06 Aug 2021 22:30:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=7892
LoveDraft’s Brewing Company’s Grand Opening is Tomorrow – August 7th, 20221 in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. (Photo courtesy of LoveDraft’s Brewing Company’s Facebook page.)

The Grand Opening

Its finally here! Tomorrow is the full, true, grand opening for LoveDraft’s Brewing Company! We’ve talked before on the blog of their soft opening, and their continued soft opening, and their “no kids allowedpolicy, and all the media and attention, and controversy that has ensued because of that. But, now its time to talk about their full grand opening.

We first broke the news that the Harrisburg downtown bar – JB LoveDraft’s Micropub – was going to be getting their own brewery back in October 20220. “Is JB LoveDraft’s Opening a Brewery?” And now its time for that realization to happen.

Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania

Its time to get ready Mechanicsburg, because LoveDraft’s is going to be a lot different than a normal bar and a normal brewery on your block. Just take a look at their social media presence and you’ll understand.

Recently, LoveDraft’s got some nation wide attention with their “no kids allowed” policy post, which you can read about here: “NO KIDS ALLOWED“. They followed this all up with a list of their in-house rules, some of which are: everyone must be 21+, no politics, no religion, no sports, no wearing certain colors, be accepting of all people, and finally and most importantly “HAIL CTHULU.”

They are going into the old Quakerstate Lube off the Carlisle Pike. The address for the LoveDraft’s Brewery is 165 Gateway Drive, Mechanicsburg, PA.

The head brewer for LoveDraft’s will be Terry Hawbaker. The award winning former brewer for Pizza Boy. If you are from the Central PA area, you are most likely familiar with his work and his beers, and I’m sure you will be loving the beers he gets to make at LoveDraft’s.

The Venue

The venue is designed to be very similar to their bar in Harrisburg. They will be a big music presence in the area, and are working with the former production and agents from the Chameleon Club to book talents for their stage. Along with their rules policy, they will have a very eclectic and loud brand of music playing, with a much more adult theme to it than most other breweries and bars, especially in the area.

Their kitchen is going to be “Smokehouse” themed, ran by ShakeDown BBQ. They will specialize in BBQ, vegan and meat, and similar cuisine. Their Facebook page (under the MENU tab) currently has a code reader to let you see their full menu.

Grand Opening

The grand opening party / event kicks off at 5PM – tomorrow – August 7th, 2021. You can find their Facebook event page here: LoveDraft’s Grand Opening. It is looking to be a banger of a party!

Can’t wait to get to see you guys out there at LoveDraft’s, listening to some killer tunes, eating amazing grub, and washing it down with Terry’s fantastic beers. Cheers all and Hail Cthulu!

NO KIDS…. ALLOWED….. (LoveDrafts Brewing) https://thebeerthrillers.com/2021/08/03/no-kids-allowed-lovedrafts-brewing/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=no-kids-allowed-lovedrafts-brewing Tue, 03 Aug 2021 15:42:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=7889

No Kids Allowed

So, as many have seen go around and around the internet lately, LoveDrafts Brewing has gotten some nationwide (or near close to it) notice due to their post on Facebook (and Instagram and other social medias) stating their policies as the brewery opens. (Grand Opening is set for August 7th.) (We’ll have more on that soon.)

You can read their Facebook post here:

“Here’s a little reminder as opening day quickly approaches. You must be 21 or older with a valid ID (state issue ID card, state issue Driver’s License, Active Duty Military ID, or Passport). No other identification will be accepted. A picture on your phone isn’t good enough. A hole punched in the corner of your card makes it invalid. A concealed carry is not identification. And so on.

No children will be allowed inside. Private events, where the entire facility has been rented for weddings and so on will be the only exception to this rule.

Otherwise, no one under 21 will be given access to our building. It’s not going to happen. There are plenty of other places to take your kids, have a few beers & cocktails, and then drive them home. We’re not the one and We’re not sorry about it.

Controversy

Who doesn’t love a good controversy? To say the above post didn’t ‘blow up’ and go viral is a bit of an understatement. People took to social media and especially to LoveDraft’s comment section to voice their opinions; either way on the issue. Pro or con. For it, or against it. The above post has certainly garnered a lot of attention. With people commenting from across the country (and even across the pond) stating their support (or lack of support) for the small – not even open yet – brewery. There has been a large uptick in their social media followers and likes as well due to the post.

Snoopy: No Dogs Allowed

Ironically, dogs are allowed (because, frankly, who doesn’t love dogs?), so just swap “KIDS” for “DOGS” in the above Snoopy / Peanuts clip.

What are your thoughts?

We here at The Beer Thrillers are curious about everyone else’s thoughts, especially since LoveDraft’s is smack dab right in our little community area. What does everyone think about their no kid policy? Especially given the verbiage of their post?

How about dogs?

How about kittens?

What about martians? Moon plants? Pet rocks?

Let us know in the comments section!

We will be posting another article – most likely on Friday – about their grand opening (set for Saturday – August 7th). So be on the lookout for that. As always, thanks for reading, and cheers everyone!
