Tattered Flag Brewery and Distillery in Middletown, PA

Tattered Flag Brewery & Still Works Sold to California-Based Tower Investments: A New Chapter for Middletown’s Historic Brewery

The beloved Tattered Flag Brewery & Still Works, a (former) staple of Middletown’s craft beer and spirits scene, has officially changed hands. California-based Tower Investments, operating locally as Middletown South Union Street, LLC, has purchased the historic property at 1 S. Union Street, according to Dauphin County deed records. This sale marks a significant moment for the community, as Tattered Flag was more than just a brewery; it was a gathering spot that held a special place in the hearts of local craft beer enthusiasts.

July 28th, 2023 Tattered Flag Brewery and Distillery announced their closure. It was announced that it was for sale (and was actually up for sale before the announcement of its closure). (Tattered Flag Brewery and Distillery For Sale.) After a while of being unable to sell the business, Tattered Flag Brewery and Distillery Ended Up For Auction. They went on the auction block in May 2024.

According to Nik Sgagias of NAI CIR, Tower Investments is actively seeking tenants for the space, hinting at possible new beginnings for the 13,000-square-foot property. Tattered Flag, known for its veteran-owned roots and innovative brews, closed its doors on October 1, 2023, following a public auction in June. The auction had a starting bid of $275,000, highlighting the historic and commercial appeal of this full-service restaurant, brewery, and distillery space.

The story of Tattered Flag began in 2015 when military veteran Pat Devlin and friends from Susquenita High School took on the massive renovation of the former Elks building. They transformed the two-story structure, which previously held three storefronts and a meeting room, into a unique brewpub and distillery, blending community spirit with a passion for craft beer and cocktails.

Over the years, Tattered Flag expanded to various locations, including taprooms in Lancaster, Gettysburg, and Derry Township. Unfortunately, these expansions—coupled with challenges from the pandemic, inflation, and labor shortages—eventually led to financial strain, and the decision to close the business was made earlier this year. The original Middletown location, however, remained a cherished landmark for both locals and visitors.

While Tower Investments has yet to comment on future plans, the company’s focus on real estate development suggests the property will likely find new life soon. Tower is a family-owned company specializing in real estate investment and development, with experience transforming properties across the country.

As Middletown awaits the next chapter for this historic location, locals can look back fondly on the memories made at Tattered Flag Brewery & Still Works, and many of us will be watching to see what the future holds for this beloved space in the heart of our community.

Auction

With its distinctive big-city vibe and prime location in downtown Middletown, this must-see property offers an unparalleled investment opportunity.

-Auction Notice

For those eyeing a prime location to launch a restaurant or event space in Dauphin County, the former Tattered Flag Brewery & Still Works in Middletown presents a unique opportunity.

Initially listed for sale last summer, Tattered Flag was founded in 2015 by military veteran Pat Devlin and his high school friends from Susquenita. They transformed the former Elks building, a two-story structure with three storefronts and a meeting room, into a vibrant brewpub and distillery after extensive renovations.

The owners announced the closure last summer, attributing it to various challenges including rapid expansion, the pandemic, and the inflation/labor crisis.

The property is now up for auction as a short sale, meaning the mortgage lender is permitting the sale for less than what is owed. The 13,000-square-foot full-service restaurant, which seats about 200 guests, has a starting bid of $275,000. While the real estate is included in the auction, the brewery and distillery equipment will be sold separately, as noted by NAI CIR.

Tattered Flag was known for its diverse beer offerings, especially New England-style IPAs and sour beers. The distillery produced award-winning spirits including gin, vodka, and blue agave.

Over the years, Tattered Flag expanded with several satellite locations, including a briefly operated taproom in Derry Township, and additional outposts in Lancaster and Gettysburg.

With Heavy Hearts Tattered Flag Announces Last Day https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/07/28/with-heavy-hearts-tattered-flag-announces-last-day/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=with-heavy-hearts-tattered-flag-announces-last-day Fri, 28 Jul 2023 12:40:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=12086 With Heavy Hearts Tattered Flag Announces Their Last Day of Operation

Tattered Flag Brewery and Distillery announced on their social media just minutes ago (at 8:30 AM) when their last day of operation will be. Saying with heavy hearts that Sunday, October 1st of 2023 will be their last day of operation.

We had previously announced their sale – Tattered Flag Brewery and Distillery For Sale – which is a complete buy out / turn key sale. All product, all equipment, full brand, full building sale. (More on the sale later in this article.) The sale was announced to the public on July 7th, 2023 (it had been internally and privately on sale for a solid month before that).

Today, July 28th, 2023 just minutes ago (8:30 AM) Tattered Flag announced their upcoming closure. The following was their announcement on Facebook:

It’s with heavy hearts that we announce that after seven incredible years, our final day of operation will be Sunday, October 1st. Had we known the pandemic was coming, we would not have expanded as quickly as we did. When the Covid shutdowns happened, we resigned ourselves to the fact that we would likely go out of business…but Pat said, “Let’s do as much good as we can before the end.” So we made hand sanitizer and fought like hell to survive. Unfortunately, the pandemic and the resulting inflation/labor crisis have finally caught up to us. Many of you will ask how you can help. We ask that you come see us several more times in the next two months, and when you do, take good care of our amazing staff.

We want to thank everyone who supported us…our Middletown neighbors and friends, near and far, who raised a flag with us. We shared good times and great experiences that we will cherish forever.

Tattered Flag Brewery and Distillery Is Up For Sale

The Middletown brewery and distillery appears to be up for sale. Nearly ten years in business, they opened in 2015, as a veteran owned brewery and distillery (the first in the state). In recent months (less than two years or so) they have opened a location in Lancaster – their barrel house – as well as took over the upstairs bar and restaurant at Hollywood Casino (Tattered Flag at Hollywood Casino).

They previously also had a location in Hershey – the Tattered Flag Bar and Lounge – which they are sub leasing to YAH Brew.

PennLive broke the story this morning:

The nearly 10-year-old brewery and distillery at 1 S. Union St. is listed for an undisclosed price by Nik Sgagias of NAI CIR, a commercial real estate company in Lemoyne. Tattered Flag remains open for business.

The sale includes a 13,000 square-foot state-of-the-art brewery with canning and bottling lines, distillery, and full service restaurant with seating up to 200 guests, according to the listing.

In 2020 they announced they would be shipping statewide with their “Supply Drop” feature, letting you order their beers anywhere in the state of Pennsylvania.

Their locations in Lancaster (the Barrel House) and Gettysburg (the tap room) are currently listed as temporarily closed.

Justin Hoak, a former head brewer of theirs, now runs his own brewery – YAH Brew – at their former location in Hershey, next to Duck Donuts.

Tattered Flag Brewery and Distillery

The brewery, restaurant, and distillery were a staple to the Middletown (Dauphin County), Pennsylvania community. Located on Union Street in the center of Middletown, it was typically a very busy restaurant.

Over the past year or so there has been a lot of changes with them. Their head distiller left to move to the Caribbean, they’ve changed multiple brewmasters and brewer staff (Dave Marrow, Cliff Plank, Justin Hoak), and at one point they were up to five locations (the Middletown location, the bar and lounge in Hershey, the Lancaster Barrel House, the Gettysburg tap room, and the Bar and Restaurant at Hollywood Casino). There was even talks at one point of them opening a bar and restaurant in other Hollywood Casino properties – not just the one in Grantville, Pennsylvania.

A few months ago a former employee of theirs had lamented to me that he felt they might have “over reached” and “over stepped” themselves, coming out of COVID – 19 and the coronavirus pandemic. Opening and spreading a bit too far and too wide.

This wouldn’t be the first or last brewery (or business in general) that has done that.

As per the sales listing the owners are willing to stay on to assist the new owners in the transition of the company.

Tattered Flag dates to 2015 when military veteran Pat Devlin and his Susquenita High School friends opened the brewery and restaurant at the former Elks building following a major renovation project. They converted the two-story building including three storefronts and a meeting room into the brewpub and distillery.

The Beer Thrillers and Tattered Flag

Canning Day at Tattered Flag

I really sincerely hope that someone comes and buys the brewery and wants to do good with it. Its a beautiful building, a beautiful brewery, and much can be done with both the brewing and distillery options of the building.

Personally I’ve had a lot of good memories in the building. I used to help Justin, volunteering, on canning days for beers, and helping to can, label, and move beers on beer release days. Myself, Amy, and Scarlet also enjoyed going their for the food and atmosphere, having recently gotten to go to their big St. Paddy’s Day fest.

Hopefully someone with good intentions, and good brewing, and good business knowledge will purchase them.

Beer Review: Life Sentence (Tattered Flag) https://thebeerthrillers.com/2021/11/01/beer-review-life-sentence-tattered-flag/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=beer-review-life-sentence-tattered-flag Mon, 01 Nov 2021 22:58:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=8157
Life Sentence by Tattered Flag Brewery and Distillery

Getting Hitched… Tying the Knot… A Life Sentence…

So many different terms and words and ways to describe getting married. Justin, the head brewer for Tattered Flag wanted to celebrate his nuptials just like anybody else, so he brewed up this New England IPA to commemorate the grand occasion.

This fine beer was released on October 21st, a day ahead of Justin’s wedding (October 22nd). I got to try it a week ago at their Halloween Party the night of (what was supposed to be) the Hummelstown Halloween Parade.

Tattered Flag Facebook post

Tattered Flag’s Can Releases

Most Fridays (not all, but a lot) Tattered Flag does releases, and they have several locations you can pick their beers up from, or even get them sent to you in the mail through their Supply Drop. They currently have five easily accessible locations in the Central PA area in various places (Middletown, Dauphin County; Penn National Hollywood Casino, Grantville, Dauphin County; Gettysburg Pennslvania, and Lancaster City in Lancaster County in Pennsylvania).

The Review

Beer: Life Sentence
Brewery: Tattered Flag
Style: IPA – Imperial / Double New England / Hazy
ABV: 8.7%
IBU: None
Untappd Description: Hazy Double IPA hopped with Citra Incognito and intensely dry hopped with Citra, Galaxy, and Sabro cryo for aromas of cantaloupe, citrus, over ripe peach, and papaya combined with vibrant flavors of grapefruit, oaky citrus, peach sorbet, and strawberry candies

Ok, bear with me here, but its been a bit of a while since I’ve done a beer review (glad to be getting back into the swing of doing them). So, just like my old reviews did – I’ll continue the trend – aroma, followed by appearance, and then finish my review with the taste descriptions and any conclusion and final thoughts I want to express. So lets get to it.

This is a super bright green, hoppy, fresh New England. It is hoppy, it is strong, it gives you peach and candy aroma. Its like opening the brite tank of an IPA in progress, or just ripping open a bag of hops about to be added to the boil. Its that bold, bright, and fresh. The aroma definitely leaps at you.

The appearance is a murky, hazy, turbid, frothing sea of hop juice. The sea was angry that day my friends. Filled with hops, it looks every bit as green and hop juicy as you expect. It doesn’t have the full haze – orange glow that most New England IPAs have, this has a bit of a greener hoppier look to it, but its still certainly hazy, opaque, juicy, and still looks very delicious.

As soon as you take your first sip, you are immediately drop kicked in the teeth, the gums, the lips, the mouth, the whole oral area by hops. This is every bit as green, as bold, and powerful, as fresh, as straight from the tanks as a beer can get. You are getting hammered and walloped by a massive dose of hops right out of the gate on this one, and it doesn’t let up at all, until the last sip. Which, warning ahead, leave some in the can, as there is some sediment, and there is a bit of trub with these cans. I think this could be the only point of contention with this beer, it maybe could have used a little bit of extra time in the tanks before being canned; but I still think it is every bit the powerful hoppy New England IPA that people will want. Its not the full on juicy easy sipping hazy New England IPA, insomuch as its a hoppy, bite, powerful, hazy New England IPA. This is certainly a strong hoppy NE – IPA; which might put off some, and there is certainly a hop bite and even hop burn, but overall its an extremely good NE – IPA. You have an incredible aroma; a very hop forward and hoppy tasting IPA with notes of peach, papaya, and gummy candies, that blend together nice, with the added boost of the hop bite.

My Untappd Rating: ****
Global Untappd Rating: 3.17 (as of 11.1.21)

Tattered Flag at Hollywood Casino Opening: August 22nd, 2021 https://thebeerthrillers.com/2021/08/22/tattered-flag-at-hollywood-casino-opening-august-22nd-2021/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=tattered-flag-at-hollywood-casino-opening-august-22nd-2021 Sun, 22 Aug 2021 14:47:11 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=7912
Tattered Flag at Hollywood Casino (Grantville) Logo

Tattered Flag’s Fifth Location Opens Today

Today is a big day for Tattered Flag and for Hollywood Casino. Firstly, as we’ve mentioned earlier (Tattered Flag to Open its 5th Location) today will be the grand opening of Tattered Flag’s fifth location. On top of having their brewery and distillery in Middletown, the lounge in Hershey (the former Hershey Biergarten), their Gettysburg location, as well as opening their barrel house in Lancaster, they are opening a dining room and pub in the Hollywood Casino at Grantville. Formerly the Skybox Restaurant in the casino (second floor), it is now going to be a dining room, pub, and restaurant for Tattered Flag.

Penn National Gaming and Hollywood Casino has recently been on a big push with their ‘myheroes’ promotion, to honor the heroes of America. Military veterans, EMTs, nurses, and other front line heroes. They have recently built a massive stage near the employee parking lot called the “myheroes stage” and tonight kicks off the start of their “Outdoor Concert Series” with Journey. Other acts include Larry The Cable Guy, John Fogerty, and Jeff Dunham.

But first, a look at the dining room and pub that Tattered Flag is opening today:

Hollywood Casino

The Hollywood Casino in Grantville is located at 777 Hollywood Blvd, Grantville, PA 17028. It is considered a “racino” because it has both a race track and a casino. It is 240,000 square feet, and has slots, table games, a poker room (which has been closed since the COVID outbreak), an indoor stage, a race track, several restaurants, a Top Golf, and now an outdoor stage. The track first opened August 30th, 1972, and the casino itself opened on February 12th, 2008.

Formerly, prior to COVID, the upstairs restaurant at Hollywood Casino was a sportsbar themed restaurant called The Skybox. After the first COVID shut – down, it did not reopen, and following the second shut – down Hollywood Casino instead turned their H Lounge area (near the indoor stage) into a quasi eatery / restaurant using the Skybox themed menu (though slimmed down). Now, finally, on August 22nd, 2021, the restaurant is reopening, but also completely rebranded as “Tattered Flag at Hollywood Casino”.

Tattered Flag at Hollywood Casino will boast an impressive 8,900 square foot restaurant and kitchen that overlooks most of the casino floor from the second floor. You can access it from the elevators or the main stairway near the one entrance.

The new restaurant will be serving the distinct craft beers and spirits created at their Middletown location. They are still operating and brewing (and distilling) from just their Middletown location. For more information on Hollywood Casino, the myheroes promotions, the outdoor concert series, Tattered Flag at Hollywood Casino, and much more, see the links at the end of the article.

Journey at the myheroes Outdoor Stage

Journey at Hollywood Casino’s outdoor stage “myheroes stage”

Tonight also kicks off the Outdoor Concert Series for Hollywood Casino in Grantville. With the first band performing in their series – Journey. Future concerts are John Fogerty, Larry the Cable Guy, and Jeff Dunham. The stage was just finished construction yesterday, and is located near the main drive – in entrance by the employee parking lot. (Impossible to miss as you drive in the main entrance.)

This is the first ‘big’ concert that Hollywood Casino in Grantville has scheduled. And its all a big part of their ‘myheroes’ promotion, to give back to military veterans and frontline workers who have been indispensable , especially in recent history with COVID and everything else that has gone on in the world and in America. This is Penn National and Hollywood Casino giving back. Tattered Flag’s rebranding of the upstairs restaurant also ties in with the ‘myheroes’ promotions.

Brews and Bands for Bart

Block Party of the Summer

How do you recognize one of the baddest and coolest party throwers around? By throwing one of the biggest and baddest bashes ever in his honor! Thats just what’s in store this Saturday at Tattered Flag. We’ve discussed Bartley Kaminski here on the blog before, in numerous different ways, but recently with his passing, and with the event here and various events in the distant past.

This event has been planned out for quite a while now, but has really blown up with Bart’s passing. Tons of breweries adding their names to the list, and lots of other additions, and add – ons and groups adding to it and showing up in various ways to help the cause. It looks to be one hell of a bash, and one hell of a way to salute, and remember Bart and to throw one final rad party in his honor and memory.

Bartley Kaminiski

We talked about Bart before here, and talked about his passing previously here: Farewell to Bartley Francis Kaminski. He founded Kollision Media, Hop Hedz Gear, and has been referred to as “The Willy Wonka of Beer Events”. I could go on and on about him here. He was just a great guy, the life of the party without being too much, and everyone who knew him, or even just met him at one event or the other has amazing memories or stories to tell about him. My buddy talks about Bart’s green – suit or green – man appearance at the Atlantic City Brewfest all the time. There was very rarely an event in the Central PA area where you didn’t see a Hop Hedz Gear stand or Bart himself. And I guarantee you there was at least one person walking around in a tee shirt or hoodie that he made.

I can’t do him justice here discussing his amazing life, but we can do him justice by having one heck of a party in his honor.

Brews and Bands for Bart

The final brewery list for Brews and Bands for Bart posted today (Wednesday 8.11.21)

Look at that line-up! And word is there might be more additions to come and stuff, even though this is the “finalized” list. And I’m sure some might have their own little additions or add ons or secret hidden stashes too.

Here is a full list with all of their Untappd links:

Word is also Lancaster Brewing Company, North Country Brewing, and maybe one or two more will be unofficially added. That is one hell of a lineup right there! With breweries from out of state like Tripping Animals (Florida) and much more.

And let us not forget the bands part of this event as well!

The music lineup for Brews and Bands for Bart at Tattered Flag this Saturday (8.14.21)

Also, as posted by Hop Hedz Gear on social media:

In addition to the 40+ breweries that will be attending the fest, we would like to thank our group of vendors who will be a part of the event! Thanks so Whimsical Wonders By Kris, Thicc Bois Glassware, D&S Cigar Lounge, Dutch Country Soft Pretzels, and Feathers Feed and Jerky. Be sure to stop by these booths, as all sales will have a portion of proceeds donated to the cause!

When, Where, How

When is this amazing block party bash? This Saturday, from noon to 4PM. Where is it? At Tattered Flag Brewery on South Union Street in Middletown, Pennsylvania (Dauphin County). How do you get tickets? Check out Hop Hedz Gear, or go here: https://shop.hophedzgear.com/products/brews-and-bands-for-bart

(UPDATE: Tickets have sold out. On the day of, they will have roughly 100 tickets for purchase at the door. This will be the only way to attend the event now.)

Tattered Flag Shipping Statewide https://thebeerthrillers.com/2020/09/05/tattered-flag-shipping-statewide/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=tattered-flag-shipping-statewide Sat, 05 Sep 2020 14:43:15 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=4256
Tattered Flag’s Supply Drop announcement

Yesterday Tattered Flag Brewing and Distillery announced that they are the latest craft brewery in Pennsylvania to jump into the shipping game. Following breweries like Levante Brewing, Tired Hands Brewing, The Larimeer, and many others, Tattered Flag will also now be shipping to all of Pennsylvania.

While some breweries have been able to ship out of Pennsylvania, currently Tattered Flag is limited to Pennsylvania only, this is still a huge step for both the brewery and fans of great craft beer the whole state over. For people as far as Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, it can be hard to get your hands on Tattered Flag, so this is a great way for them to be able to try their amazing beers and spirits.

This is not just limited to their award winning craft beers, but also their award winning spirits like their Tequila and Vodkas and their other great liquors.

They dropped this bombshell at roughly 3PM yesterday, and this was their press release on their official Facebook page:

“Introducing Tattered Flag Supply Drop – your online source for DIRECT SHIPPING of Tattered Flag’s award-winning Beer, Spirits, and Ready To Drink Canned Cocktails! Head to www.tatteredflagsupplydrop.com to create your account and place your first order! FREE SHIPPING on orders of $75 or more! We are now accepting PRE-ORDERS for shipping on Wednesday, September 9th! To celebrate, we are releasing a limited supply of our Reposado Agave (barrel aged tequila) for purchase on the website only!#tatteredflagsupplydrop#directshipping#beer#spirits#toyourfrontdoor” (with the above image)

So if you are in the state of Pennsylvania and haven’t been able to try their fantastic beers yet, be sure to jump on this fantastic new way of getting to try them, and make sure to take advantage of the free shipping (on orders over 75$).

Its great seeing some of the success stories coming out of COVID for some of these local great breweries, like Tattered Flag, and some others that are expanding or opening soon (like Rubber Soul in Hummelstown soon due to open) and The Englewood.

Be sure to check out the many beer reviews of Tattered Flag’s beers we’ve done here on the blog to get an idea of what you can order from them.

Lots of big news coming soon here to the blog, so please stay tuned, especially if you live locally in the 717 area!

Cheers!

Brew Barons Beer Trail App Launches https://thebeerthrillers.com/2020/07/15/brew-barons-beer-trail-app-launches/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=brew-barons-beer-trail-app-launches Wed, 15 Jul 2020 13:50:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=3907
Brew Barons Beer Trail Beer App

Finally, a Dauphin county centralized beer trail and beer app has been released. Created by Visit Hershey and Harrisburg PA, its the first beer trail app for the greater Harrisburg and Hershey area. It launched Monday (July 13th, 2020) and its called Beer Barons Beer Trail. You can find it in the Google Play and Android stores on your phones, tablets, etc.

Back in March I met with Rick Dunlap of Visit Hershey and Harrisburg PA. We discussed many things while enjoying a lovely dinner and a couple (that turned into a few) beers at the Tattered Flag Distillery Lounge in Hershey (the former Hershey Biergarten). We discussed my blog – The Beer Thrillers – the upcoming openings of a few breweries in the area (notably Rubber Soul) and we discussed their app; which I had to keep under wraps until now.

There is a ton of features, and a lot of great things to really like about this new app, so definitely be sure to check it out and download it. I’ll break some things down here, and discuss in greater detail in an upcoming article – giving it a full in-depth review.

I’ve gotten to ‘test drive’ it a little bit, hitting three breweries so far with it and gotten to try out a few features. This weekend being off, I’m going to be trying out a few more stops and hopefully hitting the first ‘goal’ of the rewards section.

A screenshot of the opening screen of the Brew Barons Beer Trail App

Firstly, let’s take a look at the opening screen page of the app. At the top the menu is all clickable and will redirect you to the screens you want, and on the opening screen the big blocks are clickable too – they are: How To Play, Beer Trail Hotel Packages, and Explore Hershey and Harrisburg.

First, you will need to create an account, and I recommend checking out the “How to Play” section first. This will let you create the account and learn about the app.

Beer Trail screenshot

If you click on Beer Trail, you can see a list of the participating breweries. And it will list them by distance from your current location. (Do note, you need to have location set on for this app.) as you can see I visited a few breweries and it shows which ones I’ve checked-in at.

Beer Trail map of participating breweries

A great feature of the app is the map. Which shows you where each participating brewery is. This is great for new people to the area or if you want to play your own day-trip and hit several breweries in a given area. As you can see, its not directly Harrisburg and Hershey, the map and participating breweries extends to Mt. Gretna brewery in Campbelltown as well as Tattered Flag and The Vineyard of Hershey in Middletown and out to Pizza Boy in Enola and Liquid Noise in Marysville.

Something to note – Newfangled Brew Works does not appear on this because they chose not to participate in the app.

All told there is 19 locations participating, with more to come as they open. As it shows The Watershed (The Millworks soon to be opened second location) will soon be opening. Rubber Soul Brewing in Hummelstown will also be added to the list once they open soon. There is other new breweries opening soon; and hopefully they will likewise get added (The Englewood, Howling Henry, Ever Grain Farms, and Wolf Brewing).

The app was created by Jason Meckes, a craft beer enthusiast; he has dedicated quite a bit of time to creating this app and is extremely proud of it. While recently discussing the app with Jason, he said: “Some breweries, like Rubber Soul and new Zeroday locations, are in a holding pattern until they open, but will be added once they can have people inside. We are hoping to add thousands of visitors to these breweries, and we have just been waiting for the right time when a good majority of them were OK to welcome guests again. The framework with so many breweries will help spread out that demand, too.”

The app definitely has a chance to help out many local breweries and restaurants as well. Something Jason made sure to point out to me, one of his favorite little features to the app – “One of the coolest ‘hidden’ features is the restaurants tab, which lists all Dauphin County eateries, ordered by closest to you.”

Brew Barons app logo in the ‘store’

There is definitely a lot to see in this app and it looks tremendous. As I have said and shown above, I’ve already gotten to check-in and visit three breweries, and looking at adding a few more on the weekend which coincides with my days off. So I will be able to give a much more in-depth review. So be sure to look for that companion piece to go along with this. That article will provide even more information and give a much more documented look at the features involved in the app.

Its fun to see new apps pop up in the beer and brewing industry, especially local ones. With the loss of HopPlotter and the Breweries in PA app not being the greatest, its really nice to see this well done, intuitive, and easy to use app pop up for the Central PA (Dauphin county specifically) area. So if you are in the area be sure to take advantage of it. There’s also some great prizes to be ‘won’ by checking in at different locations – from decks of cards to glasses, to even better swag. Which I’ll go into more detail in the next article.

For more information, you can also read The Burg’s launch release on the Brew Barons Beer Trail App, which has some more direct quotes with creator Jason Meckes.

Brew Barons Beer Trail

As always, thanks everyone for checking this out. Be sure to check out some of our other recent industry news articles below, and please stay safe, keep your distance, wash your hands, and enjoy some great craft beers at some great local craft breweries! Cheers!

This is the second of the three beer reviews, the first we tackled was Going Rogue, a raspberry sour. This – (the regular version) Flavor Guided Juice Missile is a DIPA (Double / Imperial IPA). We will cover the DDH (Double Dry Hopped) with Guava version next time.

I also want to say thank you to Justin for dropping the 4-pack of beers off to me while we were chilling at Boneshire Brew Works the other day. Nothing beats fresh off the canning line; day of canning beers. One of my favorite aspects of helping the canning line is standing there tilting a few back while getting some work done.

Now that we got all the official and important information out of the way, lets get to the beer review.

Flavor Guided Juice Missile by Tattered Flag

Beer: Flavor Guided Juice Missile
Brewery: Tattered Flag
Style: IPA – Imperial / Double – New England
ABV: 8.1%
IBU: (None Listed)
Untappd Description: Double NEIPA brewed with a monster amount of wheat and oats hopped and Double dry hopped with Amarillo, Denali, and Cashmere Cryo hops for big notes of earthy berries up front complimented with a crisp melon and citrus finish.

Like a typical IPA from Tattered Flag, this is a bright, juicy, NE-IPA that is delicious and tasty.

Appearance is a good hazy, normal looking New England IPA (or IIPA / DIPA). Orange – yellow with a golden hue, hazy, thin white foamy head. Good carbonation, good texture, and good appearance.

Nose is nice and hoppy as well, just like a good IPA should always be. This has got a very powerful citrus punch to it, you get a bit of a cantaloupe and melon rind. A good New England IPA / DIPA always has that juicy, tasty, silky like smell to it, where you can taste the haze and the juice and the hops before you even sip it. Just making you want to take that first sip. Always love taking a good strong sniff of a NE-IPA before even sipping. Just like a roasty stout, you just know exactly what you’re in for as soon as you take a sniff of a NE-IPA.

And exactly how it smells, is exactly how it tastes. Juicy, hoppy, citrusy, notes of the cantaloupe, melon, and melon rind really light this up. Its strong too, tasting more like a 9.5%+ beer than an 8.1% ABV, but even still, 8.1% is good enough for most folks to get them in trouble after a few. The mouthfeel is spot on with this, slick, and easy sipping, light, but you get the weight of the ABV, a full bodied beer that feels right as you drink. This is a great example of the NE-IPA style, its a strong drink but good for the summer heat all at the same time, juicy and tasty and not holding anything back.

My Untappd Rating: ****.50
Global Untappd Rating: (none yet, first to drink it, as of 7.10.20) EDIT: 4.11 (as of 7.13.20)

Cheers everyone, make sure to check out the other parts of this review series. Hope you enjoy! And make sure to go and grab the beers at Tattered Flag. They won’t last long I’m sure!
