RAR during the Star Wars Festival on May 3rd

I went to the RAR Brewing “May the 4th Be with you fest but on the 3rd” but I am not a Star Wars fan.  I don’t mean I don’t like Star Wars I just never fell in love with it.  I loved watching the 3 OGs that came out years and years ago.  I will drop quotes and funny memes.  And I am assuming since I am dating the Editor of this blog, I will be forced someday to do an entire streaming of all things Star Wars.  I am here for it.

(See our article: RAR Brewing’s May the 3rd Fest)

(See our article: RAR Brewing’s May the Fourth 2025 Beer Can Drop)

I’m a Star Wars….

We arrived on the scene in Cambridge Maryland and scoped out the parking lot.  It was small and not surprisingly already full.  We drove a couple blocks away to a free street parking spot and pulled in ready for an afternoon of enjoying a fun brewery and street festival.  There was a mix of local older aged attendees mixed with Star Wars lovers and some dressed in Star Wars Cosplay.  The entire layout of the Festival was welcoming and relaxing.

May the 4th be with you; and I also with you (sorry, I can’t help it) fest but on the 3rd was a fun, relaxing afternoon in the quaint town of Cambridge Maryland.  There was art, music, beer, lots of beer, merch and good food.

It was a tad bit confusing on how to participate in the tasting tent at first but maybe I also can’t read the instructions.  We quickly purchased our bracelets and tickets to sample all the themed beers.  It was exciting seeing all the beers available for tasting for some stellar breweries; Bash Bros Collective, Imprint Beer Co, Burlington Beer Co, 2SP Brewing Company, Autodidact Beer, Tripping Animals Brewing, Clag, Spylgass Brewing Company, Maine Beer Company, Movement Brewing Company, Voodoo Brewing Company, Dewey Beer, Frost Beer Works, Four Point and Finback

We started off with the “Cuddle Buddies” 10% ABV Cream Triple IPA from Tripping Animals and 10.1%ABV “Even Fuller Very Circular” Triple IPA W/ Citra and Mosaic by Autodidact.  I think you already know The Beer Thrillers come in heavy.  These did not disappoint, and we quickly found a spot in the shade to chill and anticipate our next sample tastings.

Then we had to try a flight of the RAR themed beers for the day.  Swamp Planet -Hop Saturated Ale 8.5% ABV, Desert Planet -Hop Saturated Ale 8.5%, Deep Fried Porg, College Deep Friend Beers -Hop Saturated Ale 10.1% and the Dark Side DELUXE -4% ABV Blueberry, Cherry, heavy Saber -Toasted Marshmallow, a touch of Roasted Habaneros, and Midnight Pastry.  These all killed with Desert being the fav for us.

We were drooling over the food truck offerings of Fried Porg Bucket (chicken tenders with RAR seasoned waffle friends and choice of sauce), Mojo Pork Tacos, Birria Beef Tacos and Chicken tacos.  The Friend Porg bucket arrived in a square brown container; we missed the novelty of the Porg bucket offering.  The chicken tenders and fries were amazing along with a side of honey mustard.  We saw many other attendees enjoying the “deep friend Porg” along with the various taco options.

RAR’s Deep Fried Porgs

Even Fett had to get in on the Galactic Grill. Good thing he removed his helmet before eating the fries.

The second music act Black Dog Alley band provided a very mellow and friendly atmosphere among Fest goers.  Most folks walking by were swaying or bobbing their heads to the beat.  A few folks were seen dancing together.  We listened and relaxed to cover songs by the Beatles, Stevie Wonder and Gnarles Barkley.

The music at the event was wonderful

This dog friendly event gave dog loving fest goers plenty to enjoy.  A friendly Pit bull puppy near us enjoyed some leftover Porg and fries.  We were immediate friends and shared some cuddles.

We purchased beer to go, some merchandise and some art from a local vendor.  We highly recommend checking out this yearly RAR May the 4th be with you events even if you aren’t a Star Wars fan.  We highly recommend checking out the quaint town of Cambridge Maryland and absolutely recommend checking out RAR Brewing company.  We can’t wait to visit again!

Gateway Craft Brewing Has Closed https://thebeerthrillers.com/2025/01/15/gateway-craft-brewing-has-closed/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=gateway-craft-brewing-has-closed Wed, 15 Jan 2025 18:13:15 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=15877 Gateway Craft Brewing Has Closed

Located at 2207 Northwood Dr Unit 3A, Salisbury, MD 21801, Gateway Craft Brewing opened in 2020, and unfortunately is having to close down. 2025 is starting off rough this year, Four Seasons Brewing has announced that they are “currently” closed, and now Gateway Craft Brewing has permanently closed. Gateway Craft Brewing was one of a few breweries located in Salisbury MD, and opened during a rough time, with the pandemic, and all of the other events and happenings of 2020.

Gateway Craft Brewing’s announcement on social media.

Gateway Craft Brewing Announces Permanent Closing

At 9:41 AM this morning, Gateway Craft Brewing made the following announcement via Facebook:

2025….

….is starting off on a bad note. Unfortunately, we must close Gateway Craft Brewing permanently. For the past 4 years we had enjoyed sharing our beer and the company of our customers and friends. Tim’s recovery from the surgery is coming along fine, but he continues to have difficulty walking, making it painful to complete all the tasks needed to maintain the brewery. If we can’t make beer, we are unable to bear the costs of keeping it open.

It has been very painful coming to this decision.

Thank you for your help and support in giving us the opportunity to further the craft beer vibe here on the Eastern Shore. Please join us Saturday January 25 for potluck, our remaining beer, discounted merch, and sharing time with friends.

Gateway Craft Brewing Facebook Post

2024 was a tough year for a lot of breweries, and 2025 doesn’t look to be much better. Tim’s medical and health issues also complicated and made things a lot harder as well for Gateway Craft Brewing.

The Battle of the Breweries (2024): Preliminary Qualifiers https://thebeerthrillers.com/2024/02/26/the-battle-of-the-breweries-2024-preliminary-qualifiers/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-battle-of-the-breweries-2024-preliminary-qualifiers Mon, 26 Feb 2024 13:58:56 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=14463

The Preliminary Qualifiers

The Battle of the Breweries – 2024

Lets get this thing started! Its time to RUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMMMMMBLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

The 2024 Battle of the Breweries is officially kicking off —– NOW — with the preliminary qualifiers. Each of the four conferences: Bravo, Crystal, Fuggle, and Galaxy, are hosting a single fatal four-way “win and you’re in” match. These are sixteen breweries that we have not been to yet, and will be traveling to and visiting in 2024 (or at the latest – early 2025). The winner of each of the four fatal four-ways will be added as the 32nd seed to their respective conference. (ie. winner of the Bravo fatal four way will become the 32nd seed in the Bravo conference, etc.)

The Battle of the Breweries (2024) is set up with four conferences of 32 (counting the “win and you’re in” brewery) for a total of 128 breweries in the main tournament (140 participating breweries in total). They will compete in single elimination rounds (Best of 32, Best of 16, Best of 8, Final Four, Finals) for each conference, before each conference will send their winner to the “Finals Fatal Four-Way” to determine the winner of this year’s Battle of the Breweries.

Breweries will be competing from Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Arizona, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia.

You can see our previous topics about the tournament for this year here:

We encourage you to go onto social media and share this post, as well as to follow our Facebook, Instagram, and other pages to stay up to date on the tournament. You can vote once per day for each conference’s blocks (once we’re in the main tournament, each conference will have their own distinct article). So to better your favorite (or your own personal) brewery’s chances of winning – we highly recommend sharing and letting all of your friends and family (and even your enemies) know to vote for you.

You can follow along with us on Facebook and Instagram.

The Rules

There’s gotta be some kind of rules to this madness right? This madness of March (and well, this year the end of February as well… and yes… also a bit of April as the tournament goes into that month as well). So… what are the rules involved?

To pull straight from the initial March Madness / Battle of the Breweries post:

So how’s this going to work? Who all is invited? What all breweries are going to be in it? How many breweries? How’s voting going to work? Who decides whose in and whose out? Whats the seeding? Why is Rick such a jerk to Morty? Why is Jurassic Bark the saddest episode of Futurama ever?  Why is the sky blue?

Ok…. enough with the questions!

March Madness (2021) – The Battle of the Breweries (2021)

Breweries are selected from breweries that have been visited by The Beer Thrillers staff.

Voting Rules

Each day you will be able to come to the site to make your votes in the polls. It will be set-up by IPS, so it limits you to voting just once per day per vote. You can vote as many times as you want per round, but only once per day.

Rounds will be one week (ending on Sunday nights at 11:59:59 PM EST) and the new week of voting starting up the next day (Monday) when I get the articles posted (usually around 8:30 – 9:30 AM EST).

Voting will typically be a week long, but the scheduling might be a bit in-flux, stay tuned to the follow up Preliminary Qualifiers post, which will spell out the scheduling a bit better. I prefer to have the rounds last Monday – Sunday for ease. The preliminary qualifiers will end on Thursday (February 29th), and  the tournament will start on a Friday (March 1st). So most likely the opening round will just have a few extra days of voting.

Schedule of Rounds

  • Preliminary Qualifiers: February 26th – February 29th
  • Round of 32: March 1st – March 10th
  • Round of 16: March 11th – March 17th
  • Round of 8: March 18th – March 24th
  • Round of 4: March 25th – March 31st
  • Conference Finals: April 1st – 7th
  • Finals Fatal Four-Way: April 8th – April 14th

VOTE HERE

Lets do this! Enough with the fine print, and the rules, and the boring stuff. Lets get to voting! Here you go, here’s where you get to vote for the Preliminary Qualifiers. The fatal four-way “Win And You’re In” match-ups. There are four fatal four-ways, one for each conference. You may only pick one brewery from each fatal four-way.

Good luck to your favorite breweries in the tournament! Share and tell your friends to help your favorite breweries get more votes!

Participating Breweries

This is the list of all 140 breweries that will be participating in the Battle of the Breweries (2024). This list is in no particular order, and is not set for their conferences. State by state we are adding maps of all of the different states with every brewery in each state. AleCraft Brewery in Bel Air to Close https://thebeerthrillers.com/2024/02/18/alecraft-brewery-in-bel-air-to-close/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=alecraft-brewery-in-bel-air-to-close Sun, 18 Feb 2024 20:15:30 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=14407

AleCraft Brewery in Bel Air to Close.

AleCraft Brewery in Bel Air to Close

On Thursday, February 29th, it will be the AleCraft Brewery’s last day in their Bel Air, MD location. They made their announcement just a bit ago that they will be closing their Bel Air location. Their new location in Railroad, Pennsylvania will continue to be open however.

No word yet on what the plans hold for anything with regards to movement, product, etc.

The Announcement

We are sad to announce our closing, scheduled for Thursday February 29. We’ve had a great 6 years meeting new friends, hosting home brew lessons and fundraisers, sampling beers from local brewers, getting and giving beer advice, partnering with local businesses like Birds Nest BBQ for great food and Oodles Cheesecakes for beer pairings, teaching brew lessons on hops, water and off flavors with the local homebrew club and a million other memories. But our time here in Harford County is at an end. We hope you don’t become strangers and come to visit us in Railroad PA. Please stop in to say goodbye (for now) over the next 10 days. Mug Clubbers can pick up their mugs anytime before we close. Thanks again.

AleCraft Brewery – Bel Air – Facebook Post

AleCraft Brewery

We got to visit them a while back and absolutely loved the cozy Bel Air spot. They also performed very well in the 2023 Battle of the Breweries, making it to the Final Four match-up and losing to Allusion Brewing Company. They won the Saaz Conference.

We haven’t gotten to the Railroad, PA location yet (on the docket for 2024), but we know they will certainly be missed in Bel Air. Its a shame to be seeing these wonderful breweries and locations closing. Hopefully 2024 turns around for most breweries, but the year is looking rough already.

Their Untappd description reads: July 2019 UPDATE: Alecraft was voted Best Maryland Brewery by Zymurgy Magazine! Thank you to all of our homebrewers! Our small system and fully stocked home brew shop give us an enormous library of ingredients at our fingertips. Our beer is crafted to be exactly what we intended: no compromises on ingredients. The access to the shop ensures we have the full creative expression we dreamed of as home brewers. In our taproom we prioritize customer service second only to the quality of beer we produce. Our staff is engaging, approachable and trained on the various styles of beer we produce. Two Years Later – Brewfests with Anxiety https://thebeerthrillers.com/2024/02/09/two-years-later-brewfests-with-anxiety/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=two-years-later-brewfests-with-anxiety Fri, 09 Feb 2024 17:44:43 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=14330

A selfie at the Cushwa Brewfest (Amy and Ben)

Two Years Later – Same Brewfest – Same Anxiety

I went to another Brewfest and didn’t have a panic attack.  Two years later and it’s still a major win.  A crowded event is always a stressor, even just a crowded restaurant can send me into a tailspin. Coming back to the Cushwa Brewing Co for the 7th Anny Brewfest celebration I was reminded of the 5th anniversary two years ago. (Brewfests with Anxiety)

Cushwa Brewfest Glassware

The 7th Anny was held at the Cushwa Brewing Co. tasting room shared with Rad pies.  It was a congested area and bumping into other Brewfest goers was inevitable.  I think by the end we all were done apologizing to each other for it.

It was a decent weather day for a Saturday in January.  I was so glad we could take advantage of the picnic benches outside of the tasting room.  For some reason I had an idea in my head that I needed to feel as carefree as I did two years ago; that I had to absolutely not feel any anxiety about entering a crowded event space.  I am not sure why we build these unfair expectations in our minds sometimes but it’s a silly waste of energy.

Also it’s been a crazy two years since the last Cushwa Brewfest:  I got a new job, I moved in with my boyfriend and we had a baby together.  I’ve had a rough time adjusting to motherhood in my forties and I don’t know what I’d do if I didn’t have him.

The beers at the brewfest were absolutely wonderful. We loved the RAR offerings, the Crooked Crab barrel aged beers were fantastic, Fidens was a good TIPA, and there were so many different options and different styles. It was nice to see that it wasn’t just “here’s an IPA” “here’s another IPA” “and oh look, another IPA”, there were lots of varieties and different styles, and from breweries from all over which was a nice change of pace too.

Ben Taking Over

Amy has been working on this column piece since… pretty much since we got back from Cushwa and Williamsport, MD. After the brewfest we did a small share with friends at the hotel, just like we had two years ago, and the day after we hit a few breweries on the way back home (we hit Interchange Brewing, Amani Brewing, Thick n Thin Brewing, Upper Stem Brewing, and Fourscore Beer). She asked me to help finish our the column for her since she’s been struggling with it a bit. Its certainly not easy doing weekly columns, and especially about one with such a serious and delicate issue – and even moreso because of how close it hits to the bone on this one.

This is a serious matter, and one that is definitely not to be taken lightly or a joke. Anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, etc are all big deep issues, and something many, many, many, many, many people face. Most without having someone to talk to about it. Most without having a chance to discuss their very serious issues and thoughts with someone.

Thank you to Amy for talking about her issues, and her fight against anxiety. Its great to see her being able to step out of that, to overcome it, and get to go have fun at events like this. Her Brewfests with Anxiety post is perfectly worded and she does an absolutely amazing job of discussing it.

Flying Dog Deep Fake Non Alcoholic Beer https://thebeerthrillers.com/2024/01/05/flying-dog-deep-fake-non-alcoholic-beer/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=flying-dog-deep-fake-non-alcoholic-beer Fri, 05 Jan 2024 16:55:10 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=13542 Flying Dog’s DeepFake Non-Alcoholic IPA
Flying Dog Brewing: DeepFake Non-Alcoholic IPA

Its Dry January, and you’ve made it to day three. Are you already craving an IPA? Any kind of beer? Even a driplet, a drop, a single hop flavored droplet of beer? Well then, Flying Dog’s DeepFake might just be the answer for you.

Flying Dog’s DeepFake Non-Alcoholic IPA is going to be right up your alley if you are looking for a kick ass hazy IPA but without the alcohol. (Now of course, even non-alcoholic beers do have some level of alcohol – in this case its less than 0.5% ABV, as is most non-alcoholic beers.)

You are also getting a low calorie beer with DeepFake as well – coming in at only 39 calories “per can”. (In this case the cans are 12 oz cans.) Thats certainly a lot lower than most beers on the market, especially the heavy beers like stouts, porters, barleywines, Belgians, etc. And even some of the hazier and adjunct heavy milkshake IPAs as well.

All of this makes this a no brainer for Dry January, oh what, we didn’t even get to the taste yet? Oh well, why didn’t you ask already!

What on the surface might smell and taste like an IPA, is in fact a masterful forgery engineered to trick the senses – a smooth drinking non-alcoholic brew bursting with delicious hop flavor. Only 39 calories per can!

Flying Dog – Deep Fake

Brewed with Mosaic, Citra, and Simcoe hops, makes this a perfect “IPA Imposter”. Honestly, it takes a double take and a double sip to realize your not drinking a real Hazy IPA and instead drinking a non-alcoholic beer.

So during Dry January – or any time you’re reaching for a non-alcoholic beer – grab DeepFake and give it a try. You will certainly be surprised that its not a real IPA!

Flying Dog Brewing Company

Recently Flying Dog Brewing Company has been in the news with their being purchased by FX Matt (Saranac Brewing). (FX Matt Brewing Company Acquires Flying Dog Brewery) Which has completely changed the landscape of craft beer in the East Coast area. Read the linked article to learn how the buy out changes Flying Dog’s production and corporate make up.

Map of New Breweries We Visited in 2023 https://thebeerthrillers.com/2024/01/01/map-of-new-breweries-we-visited-in-2023/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=map-of-new-breweries-we-visited-in-2023 Mon, 01 Jan 2024 21:55:41 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=15362 Map of New Breweries We Visited in 2023

A map of all the breweries we visited in 2023 for the first time.

This is a map of all the “new to us” breweries we visited in 2023. And by this I mean the physical locations. (So some of these will be breweries I’ve been to before, but a new location of theirs, like the Spring House Tavern.)

This list is Ben’s first time visits (mostly visited with Amy, and then later Scarlet).

How to Use The Map

You can zoom in, and click on each of the beer mugs with the paw prints on them to see the breweries. This will call up their address via Google Maps, as well as any other information they have supplied to Google (phone numbers, websites, etc.). You can also save this map to your Google Maps so when you call up Google Maps these locations will be pinned onto your map as an overlay.

Maps of Breweries in the United States of America (USA)

The below is a list of maps of the states, territories, and districts of the United States. As well as a fun map of all the breweries that The Beer Thrillers have been to. New Years Day https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/12/31/new-years-day/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=new-years-day Sun, 31 Dec 2023 05:05:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=13454 New Years Day

Ok, my Pennsylvania Dutch is about to come out a little bit.  Pork and Sauerkraut on New Year’s Day is a tradition in my family.  Served with mashed potatoes of course!  I know, I know, sometimes the sauerkraut isn’t so pleasant.  My mom perfected the recipe to take out quite a bit of the tartness and sourness.  We always cut up an apple to put in the sauerkraut, to give it a little sweetness.  Also sautéing some onions and searing the pork in the sautéed onions.  Mix those sautéed onions in with the sauerkraut.

Then roast the pork in the sauerkraut to cook it through in the oven.

I’m at a bit of a cross roads when it comes to pairing a beer with this yearly meal.  I think a very malty and sweet hefeweizen will pair nicely with the palate cleansing of the sauerkraut.  I’d reach for a Level Up Hefeweizen by Idiom Brewing Company.  Level Up comes in at a 3.79 overall rating on untapped.  It has a 5.6% ABV, just like a good Hefeweizen should!  It is described on Untapped as “Brewed with 60% malted white wheat and a touch of honey malt, then fermented to provide a balanced profile that sits squarely between clove and banana.  Super smooth, super creamy with a bready finish and light bitterness”

When you are enjoying that pork and sauerkraut dinner pair it with a hefeweizen if you are still afraid of the sour or tartness of the sauerkraut. Then when I go for seconds I will pair it with a good sturdy stout.  A strong stout is usually what you would reach for to compliment a nice pork dinner.  I’d grab a Wookies and Cream Oatmeal stout from Tall Tails Brewing Company.

Wookies and Cream comes in on Untapped with a 3.77 overall rating.  It has a 6.11% ABV and is given a rather.  This stout is so smooth it is dangerous.  It will go down even smoother with a delicious pork dinner.

  • Happy New Year!
  • Drink More Beer!
