Thank You

Thank you to everyone who voted. I will go into a much bigger thank you on the Results Page, as well as looking for feedback, suggestions for next year (and all other years going forward), and in general people’s thoughts, ideas, and if they enjoyed this year’s tournament or not. I hope everyone did. I appreciate all the time and effort everyone spent on voting and participating in the tournament, and I can only hope everyone enjoyed it. This year’s edition was plagued with a few technical issues on our website, on social media, and all kinds of things, but I think we made it through, just going an extra week long due to the issues. But ending on WrestleMania Night 2, on Easter, and on 4:20 day, kind of made up for it.

I want to congratulate all of the finalists – Allusion Brewing Company (Apollo Conference winner), Collusion Tap Works (Zeus Conference Winner), Liquid Noise Brewing Company (Cascade Conference Winner), and Acclamation Brewing (Liberty Conference Winner). All four breweries did a fantastic job throughout the tournament, and are fantastic breweries period. So if you can, go out and support these great places and people!

There was a total of 256 breweries competing this year, from 13 states and the District of Columbia.  So this was certainly a hard fought win, especially since it’s their second win, for Allusion Brewing Company. Congrats to them (again)!

IMBĪB Custom Brews is Closing End of February https://thebeerthrillers.com/2025/01/30/imbib-custom-brews-is-closing-end-of-february/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=imbib-custom-brews-is-closing-end-of-february Thu, 30 Jan 2025 16:43:50 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=15914 IMBĪB Custom Brews is Closing End of February

Unfortunately, it seems like another brewery will be closing in 2025 – this time it’ll be IMBĪB Custom Brews out of Reno, Nevada. Located at 785 E 2nd St, Reno, NV – the brewery and taproom’s last day will be at the end of February, 2025.

IMBĪB Custom Brews Closing End of February

IMBĪB Custom Brews Closing

The brewery and taproom, located at 785 E 2nd St, Reno, NV 89502 will be closing at the end of February.

Following a hard 2024, in which we saw a lot of breweries closing, 2025 isn’t letting up, with even more breweries closing, and what will probably be a record year for brewery closings across the United States (and internationally).

They made this announcement about their closing:

😭🥳🍻We are sad to share that it’s last call for IMBĪB. We will be closing our doors by the end of February as we wind down the company. It’s been a lot of fun being part of this community and industry, but our model is no longer viable.
We did what we set out to do. We made world-class, award-winning beer. We pushed the boundaries of beer, and we nailed some traditional styles. We shared our passion and knowledge with the community. We helped put the Nevada beer scene on the map. We gave to as many organizations as we could and tried to say yes as often as possible. We collaborated. We learned a lot. We started with nothing and made something out of it. We will pass the torch to our fellow breweries and let them carry on making the good stuff.
For the next few weeks, we will be offering some killer deals on our beer as we’d like to see it get appreciated and savored rather than dumped. Starting today all bottles and to-go crowlers are 50% off until we close the doors. Most of these beers will age gracefully for years to come. Next week we will have a killer deal on cases of cans as soon as we finish packaging the last few batches.
We will be throwing one last party on February 1…because we are going to go out with style. Stay tuned for details, but we sure hope to see many of you in the coming weeks. Please stop in and say goodbye and imbibe a few beers with us before we lock the doors for the last time. If you are feeling generous, tip your beertender as all of our employees will be looking for new opportunities.
In the words of Woody Guthrie – “Take it easy, but take it.”

Dancing on the Coffin of ImBIB

Dancing on the Coffin at IMBIB Custom Brews

They made this announcement for February 1st:

Join us on February 1 from Noon-6pm for one final blowout beer party as we dance on the ruins of IMBĪB and say goodbye (even though we will be open for a few more weeks in Feb). The party is at our Reno brewery. We will be scouring our archives for some special beer and all of our current discounts will still be valid that day.
Lets hug, lets cry, lets fucking dance!
If you are one of the few who complains about not getting the discount you want or not getting enough free shit….please do not join us…scavengers not welcome!

Map of New Breweries We Visited in 2024 https://thebeerthrillers.com/2025/01/07/map-of-new-breweries-we-visited-in-2024/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=map-of-new-breweries-we-visited-in-2024 Tue, 07 Jan 2025 18:18:17 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=15836 Map of New Breweries We Visited in 2024

This is a map of all the “new to us” breweries we visited in 2023. And by this I mean the physical locations. (So some of these will be breweries I’ve been to before, but a new location of theirs, examples would be satellite locations like the ZeroDay Outpost at MidTown Cinema.)

This list is Ben’s first time visits (mostly visited with Amy, and then later Scarlet).

Most of these breweries are in our home state of Pennsylvania and then stretch from our travels to Richmond Virginia and Maryland, West Virginia, and our trip up to the fingerlakes and hiking at Watkin’s Glen and Buttermilk Falls. I almost didn’t want to include the last brewery I visited in 2024 – BrewDog Las Vegas, just because it reshapes the map so much. (And since I visited five Las Vegas breweries already in 2025, I almost just wanted to tack it onto the 2025 map. But alas, that would be lying and cheating. So here is the map as presented.)

A map of the 2024 Breweries We Visited

The Map of New Breweries We Visited in 2024

How to Use The Map

You can zoom in, and click on each of the beer mugs with the paw prints on them to see the breweries. This will call up their address via Google Maps, as well as any other information they have supplied to Google (phone numbers, websites, etc.). You can also save this map to your Google Maps so when you call up Google Maps these locations will be pinned onto your map as an overlay.

Upcoming Trip to Las Vegas https://thebeerthrillers.com/2024/12/30/upcoming-trip-to-las-vegas/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=upcoming-trip-to-las-vegas Mon, 30 Dec 2024 07:15:51 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=15830 This will be my last post for 2024. And then its onto 2025! But I won’t be celebrating the New Year here in Pennsylvania, I will be celebrating in Las Vegas – amongst all the glitz and glamor, the gambling, the alcohol, the lights, the sounds, and all the craziness that comes of it. I am actually just about to get picked up by friends to be taken to the airport and leave Pennsylvania behind for a few days of Las Vegas fun to celebrate the 40th birthday of another friend.

Viva Las Vegas

Welcome to the Fabulous Las Vegas

In just moments Esteban and Laura’s son – Marcos – will be picking me up, and taking myself, Esteban, and Laura to Harrisburg International Airport (HIA), where we will meet up with Josh (MasterMind X Studios) and Drew (Knights of Nostalgia), to fly to Las Vegas and spend the next few days there. (We will be flying back on January 3rd.)

Drew is turning 40 today, and this trip will be to celebrate his birthday, celebrate New Years Eve / New Years Day, to visit his father (who will be driving up from Texas), and to most importantly – have some fun. I’ve known Drew since 5th grade (his 6th grade). The above link is his Facebook page, and this is his YouTube page where he streams video games (typically older games). (See: YouTube – Knights of Nostalgia. And also see: Facebook – Knights of Nostalgia.)

Drew and Esteban used to run a podcast together called “So a Mexican and a Scot Walk Into a Bar…” I appeared on several podcast episodes – including ones about The Irishman, Breaking Bad / Better Call Saul and El Camino, as well as Star Wars, The Umbrella Academy, and LOST themed ones. Josh (MasterMind X Studios) has also appeared on a few as well. (See: Moon of Vega Beer Review – where I discuss the podcasts a bit more.)

Josh will be joining us on the trip, he runs the MasterMind X Studios Facebook page as well as his own YouTube channel – MasterMind X Studios.

Itinerary

We don’t have a strict itinerary for the trip, but there is certainly things we all want to do while we’re in Vegas.

Some definite things we want to check out are all the various casinos, the fountain show at the Billagio, the old strip on Fremont Street, the Mob Museum, numerous breweries, and much more sight seeing.

Our flight path looks like this:

  • Monday: Harrisburg (HIA) to Charlotte. Charlotte to Las Vegas.
  • Friday: Las Vegas to Philadelphia. Philly to Harrisburg (via puddle jumper).

Breweries

In a perfect world, I’ll get to visit all these breweries, but we will see. Time will be both loose and tight while in Vegas (isn’t it always on vacations?), and the ones at the airport are very time restrictive, and are all determinate on terminals, landing times, boarding and off boarding times, etc.

But these are the possible, and hopeful breweries I could get to visit:

Charlotte Airport

  • Sycamore Brewing
  • NoDa Brewing Company
  • Wicked Weed Brewery

Las Vegas

  • BrewDog Las Vegas
  • Beer Zombies
  • Able Baker Brewing Company
  • Nevada Brew Works
  • CraftHaus Brewing
  • HUDL Brewing
  • Hop Nuts Brewing
  • Voodoo Brewing Vegas
  • Chicago Brewing Company
  • Ellis Island Hotel and Brewery
  • Tenaya Creek Brewing
  • Beer District Brewing

Some of these are very doubtful, but some are quite possible. BrewDog is located near the New York Casino, so walkable from where we’ll be staying (Harrah’s Casino). Beer Zombies isn’t too far of an Uber ride from Fremont Street, and speaking of Fremont Street and the Old Strip, there is a few breweries inside of casinos there (Chicago Brewing and Ellis Island). In the Arts District (an Uber drive from the Harrah’s) there are several breweries all in a row – Able Baker, Nevada Brew Works, HUDL Brewing, CraftHaus Brewing, and Hop Nuts Brewing. On a side street somewhere in this area is also Voodoo Brewing Vegas, so that’s also a possible stop.

We’ll see what all we get to, fingers crossed, but would be great to knock off quite a few new breweries from the list.

Time to Go

Okay, Marcos is just about to pull up. I’ve walked Leela, I’ve drank a Fiddlehead Imperial IPA while writing this, and it’s not even 4:30 AM yet. Here’s the kick off to what should be a great vacation! Cheers everyone! Chat with you soon, and I’ll try to keep the social media accounts busy while I’m there. I will do a full recap post once I get back, and might even do some day recaps while I’m there (I am taking my laptop), or I might write each day up individually when I get back and slice them in. We’ll see.

Alright, cheers, and see ya Pennsylvania!

Raising the Stakes: How Alcohol Consumption Shapes Gambling Experiences https://thebeerthrillers.com/2024/03/22/raising-the-stakes-how-alcohol-consumption-shapes-gambling-experiences/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=raising-the-stakes-how-alcohol-consumption-shapes-gambling-experiences Fri, 22 Mar 2024 12:44:13 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=14716

Drinks at a Roulette Table at a casino in Atlantic City

Sip and Spin: Navigating the Interplay Between Beer and Bets

As someone who worked as a dealer at a casino for 11 years (nearly 12 years), and who now works in the brewing industry, the idea of how gambling and alcohol correlate and cross-intersect is one I find very interesting. While working at the casino we had signs up “We don’t deal to intoxicated gamblers” and things like “Intoxicated Gambling is Illegal Gambling”…. but where’s the line and how do you draw it? …And does anyone even pay attention to the line? If a guy comes in with 50$ that line is a lot more apparent, than when a guy brings 25,000$ to the table.

So with that all in mind, I did a bit of research to look at the intersectionality of gambling and alcohol.

From Casinos to Couches: The Role of Beer in Gambling Dynamics

Gambling and Drinking

The intricate relationship between beer consumption and gambling activities is evident in settings like casinos, where the allure of free alcoholic beverages serves as a strategic enticement to enrich the gambling experience. Alcohol’s well-known effect of lowering inhibitions contributes to a more relaxed approach to gambling, often leading to higher stakes and more spontaneous betting decisions.

This concept of complimentary incentives is not confined to physical casinos but extends into the digital gambling space. Online gambling platforms lure new users with attractive promotions, such as the “$200 no deposit bonus 200 free spins,” allowing individuals to gamble from home. In such settings, the choice of drinking beer remains, but without the physical environment’s constraints, offering a different yet impactful dynamic.

Exploring Alcohol’s Psychological Effects on Gambling

Gambling in a Saloon

The impact of alcohol on gambling behavior is complex. Moderate beer consumption might reduce stress, potentially leading to clearer decision-making by reducing the anxiety associated with gambling. However, excessive drinking can impair judgment, complicating strategic gambling efforts and the ability to recognize when to quit. The outcome depends greatly on individual tolerance and the gambling context.

Even minimal alcohol consumption can subtly influence the balance between caution and risk in decision-making, with long-term effects on gambling outcomes. Additionally, alcohol can affect memory, possibly altering the perception of wins and losses and amplifying the perceived benefits of gambling while minimizing the risks through the social aspect of drinking and gambling together.

Key Psychological Considerations:

  • Risk Perception: Alcohol may make the risks of gambling seem less daunting, encouraging bolder bets.
  • Impulse Control: Drinking beer can reduce self-control, leading to more impulsive gambling decisions.
  • Stress and Cognitive Clarity: The stress-reducing effects of alcohol need to be balanced with its potential to cloud judgment and decision-making.
  • Social Influence: The social aspect of drinking while gambling can intensify alcohol’s impact on gambling choices, influenced by the behavior and suggestions of peers.

Statistical Trends and Gambling Behaviors

The global online gambling market is expected to grow significantly, highlighting the increasing popularity of digital gambling platforms. Research shows that alcohol consumption is linked to riskier gambling behaviors and an increased likelihood of regrettable decisions, underscoring the importance of moderation and awareness in combining beer with gambling activities.

According to Statista, the global online gambling market is expected to experience a growth rate of 6.59% from 2024 to 2028, reaching a total market size of €126.60 billion by the end of 2028. Engaging with statistical data reveals telling patterns about the correlation between beer consumption and gambling behaviors. Studies indicate that individuals under the influence of alcohol are more likely to engage in risky gambling behaviors compared to those who abstain. The likelihood of regrettable gambling decisions increases parallel to the amount of alcohol consumed. These statistics underscore the importance of awareness and moderation in the consumption of beer within gambling contexts.

The Growing Role of Online Gambling

Online gambling introduces a unique aspect to the beer-gambling dynamic. Even without the physical presence of free alcoholic drinks, the decision to consume beer at home can influence gambling behaviors and decisions. The online environment emphasizes personal responsibility and awareness in managing alcohol’s impact on gambling, given the ease of excessive drinking and the challenges in tracking time and money spent.

The Intersection of Beer and Gambling: A Complex Dynamic

The intersectionality of gambling and alcohol is a topic of significant interest within both psychological and sociological research, revealing complex dynamics that influence behavior and decision-making. Studies, such as those compiled by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), have often highlighted the reciprocal nature of this relationship, where alcohol consumption can lead to increased gambling activities and vice versa. This connection is not merely about the concurrent occurrence of these behaviors but also about how each can exacerbate the vulnerability to and consequences of the other. For instance, alcohol’s impairment of judgment and lowering of inhibitions can lead to riskier gambling decisions, while the high-risk environment of gambling can encourage more significant alcohol consumption as a form of stress relief or social lubrication.

Furthermore, the marketing and environmental cues present in casinos and other gambling venues often strategically emphasize the availability of complimentary or inexpensive alcoholic beverages. This practice capitalizes on the psychological association between gambling and alcohol, creating an environment that encourages patrons to indulge in both. Research published in the Journal of Gambling Studies indicates that these environmental cues can significantly impact an individual’s likelihood to engage in riskier gambling behaviors, facilitated by the disinhibiting effects of alcohol.

On a societal level, the co-occurrence of gambling and alcohol consumption can also reflect broader cultural norms and economic strategies. For example, regions with a high density of casinos and bars may see these activities as not only leisurely but also as key economic drivers, which can influence community attitudes towards gambling and alcohol consumption. The societal normalization of these behaviors can, in turn, affect individual perceptions of risk and reward associated with gambling and drinking, as noted in a comparative study across different cultures in the International Journal of Mental Health and Addiction.

However, it’s crucial to consider the individual differences that mediate the relationship between gambling and alcohol consumption. Factors such as genetic predisposition, mental health status, and personal history with addiction can significantly influence one’s susceptibility to the intertwined risks of gambling and drinking. This necessitates a more nuanced approach to addressing the intersectionality of these behaviors, highlighting the importance of targeted interventions that consider the multifaceted nature of gambling and alcohol use disorders. Tailored strategies, including cognitive-behavioral therapy and public health campaigns, are essential in mitigating the adverse outcomes associated with the co-occurrence of gambling and alcohol, as suggested by interventions evaluated in the Psychology of Addictive Behaviors journal.

Conclusion

The link between beer consumption and gambling is nuanced, affecting cognitive functions, emotional states, and decision-making processes. While the combination of beer and gambling in social scenarios is appealing, it requires mindful navigation to ensure a balanced experience. Recognizing alcohol’s influence on gambling behaviors is crucial for enhancing the enjoyment of these activities while avoiding negative consequences. Informed choices and self-regulation emerge as essential strategies for maintaining a balanced gambling experience in both physical and online environments.

In understanding the intricate dance between gambling and alcohol consumption, it becomes clear that these behaviors are not merely coincidental but deeply interconnected through a web of psychological, social, and environmental threads. The evidence points to a symbiotic relationship where each can amplify the effects and consequences of the other, leading to a cycle that can be challenging to break without proper intervention and support. This cycle not only affects individuals on a personal level, manifesting in increased risks of addiction and financial ruin, but also has broader societal implications, influencing cultural norms and economic structures around leisure and entertainment. Recognizing this complex interplay is crucial for developing effective strategies aimed at mitigating the potential harms associated with gambling and alcohol use.

Moving forward, it’s imperative for policymakers, healthcare professionals, and community leaders to collaborate in crafting and implementing comprehensive approaches that address the intersectionality of gambling and alcohol consumption. This includes creating more awareness about the risks involved, developing policies that regulate the availability and marketing of gambling and alcoholic products, and offering accessible support and treatment options for those affected. By taking into account the multifaceted nature of these behaviors and their impact on individuals and society, we can foster healthier communities where the risks associated with gambling and alcohol are understood and managed with empathy and effectiveness.
