St. Boniface Craft Brewing Co., located in Ephrata, Pennsylvania, has been a staple of the local craft beer scene since its inception in 2010. The brewery’s journey from humble beginnings to becoming a beloved establishment in Lancaster County is a testament to its commitment to quality and community.

St. Boniface Craft Brewing Co. opened its doors on February 2, 2011, in the Donecker Artworks building on North State Street in Ephrata. Despite initially offering only one beer, Hegemony Stout, the brewery quickly gained popularity among craft beer enthusiasts as Lancaster County’s first production nano brewery.

The brewery’s humble beginnings can be traced back to 2010 when the business plan was first conceived. Within months, the founders had navigated through planning, construction, and regulatory hurdles to bring their vision to life.

In these early days, St. Boniface operated on a small scale, offering samples and growler fills to eager customers. The Hegemony Stout, which remains a staple of their lineup, was described as an imperial stout with a chocolatey sweetness balanced by roasty notes from dark malts and a slight bitterness from centennial hops.

Despite the limited offerings, craft beer fans flocked to the new establishment, setting the stage for St. Boniface’s future growth and expansion in the vibrant Pennsylvania craft beer scene.

Expansion and Growth

In January 2013, St. Boniface took a significant step forward by moving to its current location on West Main Street in Ephrata1. The new space allowed for growler fills, and by June 2013, the brewery began selling its first pints on-site. This expansion marked the beginning of a new era for St. Boniface, as it could now offer a full taproom experience to its patrons.

Milestones and Innovations

As the brewery grew, so did its offerings and capabilities:

• June 2014: Inaugural Bonifest, celebrating St. Boniface’s feast day with beer, food trucks, and music.
• Fall 2014: Upgraded from a 3-barrel system to a 15-barrel Premier Stainless Brew system and commissioned their first canning line.
• October 2016: Added a kitchen to provide food service alongside their beers.

Political Controversies

In June 2022, St. Boniface Craft Brewing Co. found itself at the center of a heated political debate that significantly impacted its public image and business operations:

• The brewery’s Tied House location in Lititz planned to host an event titled “Should We Want An Explicitly Christian State” organized by The Mid Atlantic Reformation Society1.
• This decision sparked outrage among community members who accused the organization of being tied to white nationalist and hate speech, particularly concerning their derogatory language towards the LGBTQI+ community1.
• Initially, St. Boniface defended their decision, citing Pennsylvania’s Christian roots and arguing for inclusivity of all groups, including Christians.
• The brewery later deleted their social media post defending the event, but maintained their stance on hosting it.
• This controversy had lasting effects on the business:
  • The Tied House location in Lititz closed permanently in July 2024, with some attributing its failure partly to the political backlash.

Award-Winning Brews

St. Boniface’s commitment to quality has not gone unnoticed. In 2020, their Hegemony Anniversary Reserve won 3rd Place in the Barrel-Aged category at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Beer Competition.

Recent Developments

In a significant turn of events, St. Boniface was acquired by Pour Man’s Brewing Company in May 2024. This acquisition aimed to continue providing the beloved Boniface beers while expanding distribution and establishing the brands deeper in the central PA area. The Legacy Continues

Today, St. Boniface Craft Brewing Co. remains a cornerstone of the Ephrata community, offering a range of year-round, seasonal, and limited edition beers crafted and served on site5. The long and short of it though, is that Little Mutants Brewery was being quite shady near the end, underpaying (or not even paying bartenders at all), failing to provide the things they guaranteed for performers at their venue, ghosting performers on upcoming events, and much more. The above article goes into detail a bit more.

It appears that Little Mutants, from Lancaster PA, has gone the (newly popular route) of ‘silent closing’. Or ‘ghost closing’. Which basically just means they’ve closed, but without a big to-do about it, or a big announcement, or even any announcement at all. If you look at their Facebook and Instagram accounts, and even their website, they all just show recent events being that of their ‘upcoming’ Oktoberfest, and all posts end around September 21st-28th. Located at 841 N Prince Street, Lancaster PA, 17603 Little Mutants considered itself a brewery, but listed as a ‘cidery’ on Untappd, and viewed as a venue and entertainment location by most in Lancaster.

Little Mutants is Closed

Add Little Mutants to the list of breweries that have closed in 2024. (An ever increasingly growing number.) By all appearances they had closed before the end of October; though they did so silently, and without alerting anyone. Their Facebook, Instagram, and Website, still had events listed past October, but no posts past September 28th.

Digging into things, all I’ve really been able to locate about reasons for closing is this thread on Lancaster’s sub-reddit:

• Little Mutants (Lancaster /r/)

In it they discuss multiple reasons for the the venue and brewery closing. Some things, like bartenders not being paid, people who were running shows at the venue not getting the guarantees that they had asked for, and even more salacious rumors of the ownership and employees. (Note some of these are rumors, but some have also been verified as true.)

One quote from the post reads:

This is a pattern for them. And a big reason why everything is imploding so quickly. It has gotten really messy but here’s what I know –

Apparently one of the day-1 bartenders/creative partners who really put a lot of effort into elevating the experiences there and invested personal money (nearly 10k) into it with the promise of reimbursement (not ideal, but apparently finances are a disaster over there), eventually left after trying to get paid not just for the business expenses, but his actual wages too. The bartender had to screenshot the very avoidant and blamey text conversation they had with the owner and post it on their IG story before he was paid back, but not before being blamed for causing emotional distress and a bunch of other weaponized therapy-speak.

There have been long-standing concerns about harm reduction, given the culture there (and Stygian, the Shadowlands DJ/organizer, posted a very well-articulated response to everything going on on their IG story on Friday or Saturday). The “creative director” there has been having a long-standing affair with the owner and that whole situation has resulted in some rather poor choices being made both internally and some downright absurdly disrespectful treatment of artists who worked with them, and its just all blowing up in pretty spectacular fashion.

Another quote from the post reads:

Hi, I was a main bartender there. It’s all a huge mess and I am owed thousands of dollars from my credit card tips being stolen without my knowledge. The only other bartender noticed and did the math, and I eventually did too to figure out how large the difference was. It’s like it all crumbled within a matter of weeks, and the stress of it all has been making me sick. I received a text from the one owner (who is in the spotlight) on 10/4 saying I was no longer able to work there due to lack of funds. It was really devastating for me financially to be cut off like that.

I always tried to be neutral, positive, and do well at my job but in the end I was too trusting and was burned badly. I loved that venue for hosting alternative electronic music, metal shows, and of course Shadowland but I am left really hurt by it all. I even feel embarrassed for believing in the cause and being associated with it. I am thankful for the people I met there and fun I had… but that place truly was set on fire, pissed on, and suplexed in a matter of weeks and unfortunately me, the other bartender, DJs, and (incredible) queens have suffered greatly over the terrible ownership decisions that were made by one particular owner.

I still haven’t been paid what I’m owed. The other bartender thankfully has, though. I will say the other owners and investors are fighting for me and have been absolutely amazing supporting me through this.

Edit to add: I’ve been quiet about this on my socials because I want to actually get paid what I’m owed, and it’s truly such a dumpster fire that I feel like I just want to move on with my life… I have so much other shit going on.

One person on the thread even commenting that they had an upcoming show and just suddenly stopped receiving e-mails and replies from Little Mutants ownership. So it seems like it was a full ghosting on all people and to everyone involved. This speaks much more to the ownership, those running the business, than it does about the business in general; and sadly gives the craft beer industry and the brewing industry as a whole a bad name.While there has been several poor owners and bad managers and companies in the craft brewing industry (looks at Imprint) – generally speaking, the craft brewing industry is filled with hard working, dedicated, community forward individuals.

It’s Pumpkin Time!

So…. a couple leaves have changed color on the tree in our front yard.  So…. it’s technically not too early, right?  I can talk about pumpkin spice now?  They were the first ones I saw in the store and I had to grab a couple for me and Grandma SueAnn to enjoy.   (See: A Beer Review by Grandma SueAnn [Beer Review: Braaaiins! by Spring House Brewing Company].)

We were shopping at the local Weiss and I saw it on an end-cap and I had to have it.  Braaaiins by Spring House Brewing Company.  I grabbed the 4pack with the approving nod from the boyfriend.  I could hardly wait long enough for them to chill.  Grandma SueAnn was in agreement; kicking our pumpkin beer drinking season off with a loved classic was the way to go. The first pumpkin beer of the year, near end of August, and I had to grab it!

Braaaiins! by Spring House Brewing

Once chilled this pumpkin ale is the perfect beer to kick off Autumn with.  It is described on Untapped as “our pumpkin ale is brewed with generous amounts of real pumpkin blended into the mash.  The subtle fresh pumpkin flavor is enhanced by the addition of a touch of traditional autumn spices and sweet dough, thus creating a beer with an orange amber color, warm pumpkin aroma, a bold malt center and a crisp finish.  We are proud to offer you a balanced and delectable fall treat.  Suitable for zombies.”  It has an 8.5% ABV so I isn’t anything to mess around with.  It has an overall rating on Untapped of 3.70.

Zombies are People Too by New Trail Brewing

On another occasion we swung into West Connection Beer Vault in Hummelstown (find West Connection Beer Vault on Facebook).  Amongst the mix of six we picked out were two from New Trail Brewing. (We also scored a fantastic Barleywine by 3 Floyds Brewing – Pillar of Beasts. See Ben’s beer review of that here: Beer Review: Pillar of Beasts by 3 Floyds Brewing.)

Zombies Are People Too and Double Zombies, two pumpkin beers from the mid – Central PA brewery up in Williamsport. They clock in at a 5.7%ABV and an 8.5% ABV respectively. My first instinct was to see if Grandma SueAnn could tell the difference between the two New Trail pumpkin beers. (Because who better to try out new pumpkin beers with than Grandma SueAnn?) Yes, the Double Zombies has a higher ABV but Double Zombies is also supposed to be packed with, according to Untapped “twice the strength, maple syrup, vanilla, and pumpkin spice.”  Grandma SueAnn thought she tasted just a bit more spice to Double Zombies but she happily helped me drink both pumpkin beers.

Overall though we enjoyed both of the New Trail pumpkin options. In the mid-state (Harrisburg area) you can find them at your different beer distributors and bottle shops like Breski’s Beverages, West Connection Beer Vault, Brass Rail, Bradford Village Beer and Soda, as well as at your grocery stores like Wegmans, Weiss, and Giant. You might even be able to find them in some gas stations like Rutters, WaWa, or Sheetz. So be on the lookout and the hunt!

Truth Beer’s original brewery in Akron

Truth Beer has relocated its brewery to Lancaster, closing its Akron location that opened in September 2022.

The brewery and taproom are now both situated at 928 N. Prince St., the former site of Cartel Brewing & Blending. Cartel Brewing moved late last year to 920 Landis Ave., near Franklin & Marshall College.

Truth Beer Closes Their Akron Brewery and Moves Beermaking Operation to Lancaster Taproom

Truth Beer initially opened a taproom at the Prince Street location in January but maintained its brewery in Akron at 401 S. Seventh St. With the complete relocation, the brewery will now operate from the garage space behind the taproom, where Cartel Brewing previously produced its beer. Production is expected to commence in several weeks, according to co-owner Dave Timblin.

Truth Beer Company is a nano brewery from Akron (now Lancaster), PA. They have 31 unique beers and over 2,700 ratings, with a global average rating of 3.81 (as of 7.11.24). Their Untappd description reads: “Truth’s brewery and tasting room was opened in September of 2022 by co-owners/operators (and friends since childhood) Ryan and Dave. They focus on hop-forward styles, and innovating with new methods or ingredients. New taproom in Lancaster is OPEN! 928 N. Prince St. Lancaster, PA ”

Our Town Brewery Releasing Conestoga to Support Lancaster Conservancy

Our Town Brewery is looking to help raise funds for the Lancaster Conservancy. They are releasing Conestoga today. It is a 5% Pale Ale (American). It is made in collaboration with other Lancaster area breweries (including Columbia Kettle Works, and Pour Man’s Brewing). The Untappd description for the beer reads: “Pale Ale brewed to celebrate and raise funds for the Lancaster County Conservancy’s Water Week. For every pint/can sold $1 is donated in support of their efforts to clean and maintain Lancaster counties waterways. Featuring a blend of Cascade and Citra hops, this beer is dry and refreshing. Crisp and citrusy.”

The Lancaster Craft Beerfest is Returning August 2024

Finally returning for the first time since COVID (since 2019, postponed in 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023), the Lancaster Craft Beerfest is set to return this August 2024. In a time when some brewfests are closing up (Mount Hope Renaissance Faire Brewfest Ending) and many more are downsizing, its nice to see this one return.

Maybe we will start to see a resurgence of brewfests. Maybe even the Mt. Hope Ren Faire one will come back next year. In just two weeks time there will be the Hoppy Valley Brewfest in Beaver Stadium, State College, PA. There has been a lot of talk the past two years about how brewfests and big beer events were on the decline, mainly pointing out the Great American Beer Fest (GABF) and similarly sized events and in general just how much the world has changed since 2020 and COVID-19.

BEERFEST IS BACK! The Lancaster Craft Beerfest is returning on Saturday, August 24, 2024. After a hiatus that began in 2020, we are returning to the City of Lancaster with your favorite local & regional breweries. YAH Brew is Looking to Expand… but to where? Maybe Lancaster?

Its looking like YAH Brew is going to be expanding in the near future. All they’ve posted is this little ‘teaser’ or ‘hint’. A picture and a small blurb of text. It looks like it might be Lancaster where they are expanding to next. It makes some sense. Head brewer for YAH Brew – Justin – used to be the head brewer for Tattered Flag; Tattered Flag also had a location in Lancaster (their Barrel House – near the Grand Station); its a new location and a bit distant but still close to their main headquarters in Hershey and where they brew (Hummelstown), and Justin also has ties to the area having previously worked for Spring House and being from Mount Joy.

The Announcement

On this day a year ago we were excited to announce that we would be opening our downtown Hershey location.

Thanks to the support of all of you wonderful folks, the need for a more efficient production space became apparent rather quickly. We found a space to move the brewery and thought “We should probably add a taproom & kitchen here too”…

Our Town Brewery’s new taproom is Philadelphia is set to have their soft opening this weekend – Saturday and Sunday, the 3rd and 4th of February, 2024. They took to their social media today to make the announcement of their upcoming soft opening:

In April of 2023 we broke the news here on the blog of their opening in Philadelphia – Our Town Brewery Expanding to Philadelphia, and in less than a year they are ready for their opening. First with the soft opening this weekend – February 3rd and 4th 2024; followed by their Grand Opening on Friday February 8th, 2024.

Currently Our Town Brewery is located in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. This additional taproom will be located at 1519 Ridge Avenue, Philadelphia.

Inside Our Town Brewery’s New Taproom

The new location at 1519 Ridge Avenue, Philadelphia will be a taproom only, meaning they won’t be producing any beer at this location. Their production will still be at the original location and brewery in Lancaster, PA. Our Town Brewery’s location will have a square footprint of 1,700 but the taproom will be 1,100 square feet. The bar – central to the location (directly upfront) will be 16 feet long (and able to seat 8), and then there will be tables dispersed throughout the taproom. The estimated seating will be 40 – 45 people. The bar itself will consist of 16 taps, including two beloved Lukr taps. They will serve outside cider and cocktails as well, befitting a PA Brewery’s License.

There is a front sidewalk and a 600 foot backyard – beer garden. These two areas will be able to seat an additional 20 people (estimated). Currently nearby is a dog park, and they will see if there is a way to be able to take their beer over to the dog park for those who wish to bring their furry friends out for a drink.

We are working on a massive project here at The Beer Thrillers. We are creating a map of all of the breweries across the United States. State by state we are adding maps of all of the different states with every brewery in each state. Truth Beer Company has moved into the old Cartel Brewing building in Lancaster Pennsylvania. (See our article: Cartel Brewing and Blending is Moving) (and see our other article: Truth Beer Company Opening a Taproom in Lancaster) They are having their Grand Opening on January 20th, 2024.

This Saturday – January 20th, 2024 – Truth Beer Company is having their Grand Opening in Lancaster (at the home of the former Cartel Brewing and Blending) at 928 N. Prince St. Lancaster, PA 17603. Doors will open at noon and the taps will be flowing!

In case you missed our last post, our new taproom Grand Opening is this Saturday, 1-20 at noon! Our new space is located at 928 N. Prince St. Lancaster, PA 17603. We have 13 offerings on tap, including a couple guest taps from our friends at @pourmansbrewingco@mooduckbrewery and @bighillciderworks

We also are starting this new venture with a small but thoughtful food menu including sandwiches, our soft pretzel braids, and kids’ options.

Come out and help us celebrate the next step in Truth’s evolution from 12-9 on Saturday!
