Hits Pause on Hatfield Brewing

In a shocking twist that’s left the craft beer community reeling, Imprint Beer Co., a beloved local brewery in Hatfield, has announced a major shake-up in their operations. Known for their innovative brews and loyal following, Imprint is facing a bitter reality that’s forcing them to halt beer production at their Hatfield facility.

The Sobering News

The brewery dropped this bombshell on social media, citing economic pressures as the main culprit. At the heart of the issue? Hefty surcharges imposed by the Hatfield Municipal Authority on water usage and wastewater volumes. These unexpected costs have apparently tapped out the brewery’s resources, leaving them in a tough spot.

Imprint Beer Co is best known for their Schmoojies and (smoothie) sour beers. They are located at: 1500 Industry Rd STE R, Hatfield, PA 19440.

Imprint Goes to Social Media

Anyone who is familiar with BeerNerds and BeerGods Facebook groups, which are primarily Philadelphia / New Jersey based beer groups (but are national) would have seen some of the news about this already. Posts like this one:

A post from the BeerGods Facebook Group

There has been a lot of talk in other groups as well. Some like: Beer Nerds, BeerGods, BeerNERDS, TheBeerGods, and Pennsylvania Craft Breweries. (You can also always check out our group as well – The Beer Thrillers Group). There was lots of talk about how the brewery staff was let go, just weeks out from Christmas (today – December 4th, is officially three weeks before Christmas).

In response to all of these postings, the Imprint Beer Company themselves went to social media and made several posts. In it they discuss how important their staff is, how much they love their workers, and how vital the employees are to the company.

Its the typical responses you see from companies giving a “rah rah” speech; but at the same time, its also the same typical response you see to media backlashes that companies get. Not quite an apology, not quite overall sincerity, and not quite getting to the true issues of everything going on. You can read for yourself below, with their quoted post, and then the images they had on their posts. They posted this on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and whatever other social medias they have.

The post reads:

Swipe to learn why we are moving our production and packaging location.
We thank everyone who has reached out with their support over the past couple days.
As always, we love what we built, our staff, and especially all our customers. We are OF COURSE open as usual in the taproom and arcade in Hatfield for at least 3 more years!!
See you here 🍻

Staff Cuts and Community Reaction

Perhaps the most gut-wrenching part of this news is the impact on Imprint’s team. The brewery confirmed they’ve had to let go of their production and packaging staff, a decision that’s clearly left a sour taste in many mouths. Social media has been buzzing with reports of abrupt dismissals, with one former employee claiming they were fired in a mere 38-second phone call.

Hope on the Horizon?

Despite this setback, it’s not all doom and gloom for Imprint Beer Co. The brewery insists they’re not closing shop entirely. In fact, they claim sales are still ‘climbing briskly’ – a silver lining in an otherwise cloudy forecast. They’re actively scouting for a new production facility that won’t drain their resources with excessive surcharges.

This also comes on the heels of Sly Fox Brewing Owing Money for Damages and Penalties in related to tip wage theft.  (See also: Sly Fox Brewing Ordered to Pay Nearly $200K for Withholding Tips)

What This Means for Craft Beer Lovers

For now, Imprint fans might need to savor those last few cans in their fridges. But fear not, hop heads! The brewery is determined to get back to brewing as soon as possible. They’re committed to continuing their legacy of crafting those unique, handcrafted beers we’ve all come to love

The Bigger Picture

This situation highlights the challenges small breweries face in today’s economic climate. From rising costs to regulatory hurdles, craft brewers often find themselves navigating choppy waters. It’s a reminder of the passion and perseverance required to keep the craft beer scene thriving. As we raise a glass to Imprint Beer Co.’s resilience, let’s hope for a swift return to brewing. After all, the craft beer world wouldn’t be the same without their creative concoctions. Stay tuned, beer lovers – this story is still fermenting!

This is also a very poor look on Imprint Beer. Considering the timing in relation to Christmas, New Years, the Holidays, etc. Also given reports of how much people did not enjoy working for them, and now as the dirt will begin to work its way out on the various social media platforms.
We hope all staff that was working for them finds new jobs and new (and seemingly better) places of employment. Especially at this point in the year. We will also keep everyone updated on what goes on with Imprint Beer, as they move on from this.

YAH Brew and Desserts Pairing https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/12/13/yah-brew-and-desserts-pairing/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=yah-brew-and-desserts-pairing Thu, 14 Dec 2023 01:40:40 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=13268 Cupcake and Beer

A dessert pairing with a fresh beer, it feels like my Christmas present already arrived.  Ben and I decided a quick date night was in order.  As soon, as you walk in the door you feel like the 90s theme of YAH Brew was successfully switched over to a 90s theme Christmas Brewery. They completed the transition with a Gingerbread stout by YAH Brew and paired it with a Gingerbread cupcake from Desserts Etc.

The Gingerbread stout, Santa’s Bake, is described on Facebook as “a Gingerbread stout with Flavors or gingerbread, spices, vanilla and cream cheese frosting”. The Gingerbread Stout starts off with a light gingerbread flavor, the thickness of the stout comes in and then it feels like you dive into one last kick of gingerbread so you don’t forget it.

Santa’s Bake comes in on Untapped with a 6% ABV and it has an overall rating of 4.08.

The sweet cream cheese frosting, soft gingerbread cookie and soft gingerbread flavor cupcake are the perfect complement to this thick milk stout.  I knew right away Grandma SueAnn would love this stout.  I hope you remember me explaining we weren’t just pumpkin spice loving gals, we love all the seasonal flavors! I made sure to take a Crowler home to Grandma SueAnn.

While at YAH Brew enjoying this paring with my Boo, we had to also have something a little savory.  We tried out the Nachos and added the smoked pork.  This was an incredibly good choice to balance out the sweetness from the stout and cupcake.  The beer cheese in the nachos or maybe it was the pico de gallo had just a touch of spice that was the perfect balance.

Nachos and Imprint’s Dream Bars

We also split the Bourbon Barrel Aged 5ifth Anniversary Dream bars by Imprint Beer Co.  This pastry stout was like a dream.  It went along well with all the other tasty selections we were enjoying.

Then, to finish off Ben ordered the Gushee: Creepy Crawler.  I thought all my food/drink aversions where over after my pregnancy.  But just the thought of this one makes me gag.  Seriously, as I am writing this my visceral reaction is to vomit.  It was greatly upsetting as I was still polishing off those nachos when the drink arrived.  I was never the type of girl to be like that.  Your girl knew how to take a shot down the hatch.

YAH Brew’s crowler.

We noticed the crowler label as I watched Ben finish off the Gushee; adoptable pets from the Humane Society.  Any business that supports a non profit will always have my business.  Not only do I get to bop my head to tunes that remind me of being a teenager, but I feel good when it helps supports my community.  YAH Brew might be one of our fav breweries, especially for a date night.

Breweries in Pennsylvania – Top 10 (as per Perplexity)

The Top 10 Breweries in Pennsylvania

This is a generated list using Perplexity AI. It is based off of an aggregate of values – mostly rating system based sites like Untappd, Yelp, TripAdvisor, Beer Advocate, and Rate My Beer. It also factors into play certain key blogs – VinePair, our website (The Beer Thrillers), BiPA, and more.

Since its middle of December, I thought it’d be a good time to take a look back at the best breweries of 2023. This list is just breweries in PA, and just for statistical purposes the year of 2023. It was ran through Perplexity AI and put in a few different times to make sure the list was accurate and not just a sequence of things, it was told to use user ratings and check in apps, and it was told to just include 2023 and just to include Breweries in PA. It was also done several times with the same parameters to ensure that the AI was selecting the same breweries and not just throwing out random breweries. The AI also provided its sources.

Top 10 Breweries in Pennsylvania for 2023

The top 10 breweries in Pennsylvania in 2023, according to various sources, are as follows:

  1. Other Half Brewing
  2. The Referend Bier Blendery
  3. Imprint Beer Co
  4. Fermentery Form
  5. Hidden River Brewing
  6. Antifragile Brewing
  7. D.G. Yuengling and Son Brewery
  8. Troegs Brewing Company
  9. Yards Brewing Company
  10. Lancaster Brewing

Additionally, the highest-rated beer in Pennsylvania in 2023 is “Le Roar Grrrz” from Bullfrog Brewery, according to VinePair. These rankings are based on various factors such as user ratings, reviews, and check-ins on platforms like Untappd and Yelp.

Another End of the Year Article

Yes, this is yet again – ANOTHER – end of the year article. Part of a series that Untappd has put out, and I’ve followed and kept an interest and an eye on. (I do have to admit, despite nearly failing high school math, I’ve always enjoyed statistics, data, and how to read and interpret all the information.) You can see our previous articles of the Untappd series here:

I even went and made my own chart (or graph or whatever) on Canva using the information from the beers article (The Top 10 Craft Beers With the Most 5-Star Check-Ins of 2022). So be sure to check out the articles above to see the data and how they correlate.

This one is a little bit different. This list is looking at unique output. How many new beers did these breweries create (and added to Untappd) just this year. Its an interesting look at not just volume, but how much new volume these breweries have created.

Now, what constitutes a ‘new’ beer for Untappd can be a bit nebulous. If I make Beer A, and then make Beer B and just call it Beer B (2022) technically thats a new beer as far as Untappd unique beers would be concerned. Even though its Mad Elf, Mad Elf (2021), and Mad Elf (2022). In that example, Untappd would treat it as three unique beers, despite obviously its the same beer.

So let’s take a look at the latest Untappd ‘end of the year’ list and article:

The Top 10 Breweries With the Most Beers Created in 2022

  • 10. Orchestrated Minds Brewing (Fort Lauderdale, FL) – 186 Unique Beers Added
  • 9. Humble Sea Brewing (Santa Cruz, CA) – 187 Unique Beers Added
  • 8. Burial Beer Company (Asheville, NC) – 195 Unique Beers Added
  • 7. Three Notch’d Brewing (Charlottesville, VA) – 204 Unique Beers Added
  • 6. TailGate Brewing Company (Nashville, TN) – 205 Unique Beers Added
  • 5. Imprint Beer Company (Hatfield, PA) – 206 Unique Beers Added
  • 4. Mirror Twin Brewing (Lexington, KY) – 215 Unique Beers Added
  • 3. Odell Brewing Company (Fort Collins, CO) – 224 Unique Beers Added
  • 2. Other Half Brewing Company (Brooklyn, NY) – 281 Unique Beers Added
  • 1. Tree House Brewing Company (Charlton, MA) – 362 Unique Beers Added

Data

A chart of the new beers by brewery

The lower numbers are relatively close to each other, 186, 187, 195, then a small jump to 204 and then its followed by 205 and 206, and then a bigger jump to 281 and then the final jump to 362. So this is another list that Tree House Brewing Company has made (thats three now – they were also included in the most five star check ins by beer and most five star check ins by brewery), Other Half also has made it onto two lists now as well (also with most five star check ins by brewery).

Two breweries from Pennsylvania made the list. Imprint Beer Company made the list with 206 unique beers, and multi – state brewery Other Half Brewing Company (New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington D. C. ) made it with 281 unique beers.

All data was compiled from January 1st through December 9th 2022.

End of the Year

As I said in our last end of the year article: What Regions Drank the Most (2022):

Its the end of the year, and what that usually entails is a whole slew of “end of the year lists”. Top 10 this… top 38 that… top 69 (heeheehee) this and that…. Top 314.181928102810 Pies, etc.

We are going to post a few this year. In the past we’ve kinda shied away from posting these sorts of articles, because the metrics and information is kind of… biased in a way. Its basically just reading off Untappd’s information and lists and going with it. For example, recently Breweries in PA did a final end of the year Top 10 Pennsylvania Breweries listing article, using Untappd’s information, and well… it was received as well as you can imagine. Mainly because they didn’t put in any filters or restrictions or limits to it. So just before the list was posted, Country Club Brewing Company (see an article about them here: Country Club Brewing Company Announces Opening) had their grand opening. They had roughly 1,000 check – ins on the Untappd app, and being a grand opening most of them were very favorable (mostly four caps or better). So needless to say this put a lot of readers and breweries themselves up in arms about it. It actually listed them at number three (out of ten). (The other thing that irked most was that Other Half Brewing Company was listed, when they have several non – Pennsylvanian locations.)

But… I’m gonna go out on a limb and use Untappd to post some of these lists. If nothing else we can look back at them as just data charts and analyze them for the statistics. At best, they prompt some conversation and discussion (and we all know how well that goes on the internet).

Thanks For Reading

Thank you everyone for checking out the article. We enjoy having you come to the site! In the next few days I’ll be posting a few more lists and variants and such. So be sure to stop back out each day for that.

Like I said in our previous post, lots still going on here at the blog despite it being the end of the year. I’m also heading back to work in a few days time, so things will be picking up work wise as well. So it’ll be holidays, work, baby Scarlet, and the blog. Busy. Busy. Busy. But, like I did say on the last post, Josh and I were invited out to Central PA Pour to do a podcast, which was an absolute blast. We filmed and recorded that on the 18th, and that will be going live just before New Years. So look for that. Should be entertaining and fun. We had a blast.

Cheers All!

Imprint Beer Co. has begun to ship state wide throughout Pennsylvania

Yesterday, November 15th (2020), Imprint Beer Co has announced that they will be the latest brewery in Pennsylvania to begin to ship state wide. There has been several other breweries that have begun shipping wide since the start of the year, primarily brought on by the rise of the pandemic and COVID-19 and restrictions changing how breweries need to work in Pennsylvania. (Click here to read how Tattered Flag announced Supply Drop – their state wide shipping program.)

Imprint Beer Co. has been one of the top breweries in Pennsylvania for the last couple of years, with regular long lines for their latest can releases, and being constantly touted online and raved about in various beer groups. The second mark for their beers in trade groups has likewise gone through the roof at times as well.

You can find their shipping site on their main website here: Imprint Beer Co. Shipping.

They made their announcement via social media through their Instagram and other pages. They are a Philadelphia based brewery, but will be shipping across the entire Keystone state.

As per their Instagram post:

  • Beers will be sold in groups of 4 – four packs (meaning 4 individual 4 packs, so 16 beers)
  • Ships Anywhere in Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania Only
  • Beer Availability will be posted on Sundays at 4:00 PM
Imprint’s posting on Instagram

From their shipping site, it also lists the Split Theory Coffee, merchandise, glassware and other things can also be purchased and shipped. This is a great chance for many people in the state of Pennsylvania to get to try out this wonderful brewery. They are certainly not one to sleep on.

You can read more here on Fueled by Hops: Imprint Beer Ships State Wide.

I have started work on the Indy Trip series, so be sure to check in to see them being posted. You can read the quick recap here, and see the outline above for more information. There was seven days with small recaps that you can also find through the links above. Cheers and be safe out there everyone, COVID is on the rise, keep safe, keep calm, and enjoy some delicious craft beers!

Beer Review: All Together (Ever Grain and Other Half Brewing) https://thebeerthrillers.com/2020/05/14/beer-review-all-together-ever-grain-and-other-half-brewing/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=beer-review-all-together-ever-grain-and-other-half-brewing Thu, 14 May 2020 13:57:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=3309
All Together by Ever Grain Brewing Co. (Partnering in ‘collaboration’ with Other Half Brewing Co. and many other breweries for this project.)

Many of you have probably heard of the ‘All Together’ project, started by Other Half Brewing Co. As soon as I heard about it, I had to immediately find the first brewery in my area to do it and get one; that first one in my immediate area turned out to be Ever Grain Brewing Co. Unfortunately I missed out on the 4pk of it, but I did get in time for a crowler (or two) of it, and I was informed that the crowler sales would go towards the project, just as the 4pk sales did.

I will be posting links to several other sites and sources about this here in this beer review / article, and I highly recommend you checking them out, and I also highly recommend checking out whatever ways you can have of donating.

Here is a direct bit from the Other Half Brewing Co.’s website on their official beer release version of theirs:

A world wide collaboration hosted by Other Half, Stout Collective and Craftpeak to support the enormous amount of hospitality workers laid off during this difficult time. We are donating 100% of our proceeds to the Restaurant Workers Community Foundation. We brewed this recipe with 2-row, oats and carapils and then hopped it with a beautiful blend of our hand selected Citra, Mosaic, Simcoe and Cascade. We intentionally kept the recipe simple so that every brewer that wants to do it can do it. Keep an eye out for versions from over 500 breweries worldwide all working to help others in need. Visit alltogether.beer for all the details and a list of breweries involved. Collect them all 🙂 Brewed in Rochester.

Other Half Brewing Co.

Many breweries jumped on board, and you can find some lists of who all is doing it on a few other sites, such as Craftbeerdrinking and Hopculture.

Craftbeer.com’s article (All Together Collaboration – Beer to Help Hospitality Workers) lists: Non Sequitur Beer Project, Side Project, Southern Grist, Mikerphone Brewing, Fifth Hammer Brewing, Modist Brewing, Outer Range Brewing Co., Industrial Arts Brewing Co., and obviously Other Half Brewing Co.

The All Together Beer website, a site designed for this and set up for this project, has a wealth of information on the project. I highly recommend checking this out. You can find the recipe, you can find ways to donate, and if you are a brewery, you can also find a way to jump aboard and become part of the project, as well as print out labels, and get ways to promote the beer for yourself as well. At the bottom of their page, they have a map and a running tally / statistic. There is 824 breweries that have participated, in 50 states (of the United States of America), and in 53 countries. That is amazing and just phenomenal! 824 breweries is insane! And every state, and 53 countries helping out, is just downright awesome. I don’t care how you slice it, breweries helping people, will always be awesome, and I will always gladly do what I can to help support that.

There is a map, that you can zoom in and see what breweries are doing the project. So being a Central PA native, I had to zoom in on PA and see who all is jumping aboard, and here is a list of many that are:

(in no particular order)

  • Saucony Creek Brewing Company
  • Robin Hood Brewing
  • Shy Bear Brewing
  • Hidden Stories Brewing Co. LLC
  • Rotunda Brewing Company
  • Ever Grain Brewing Co.
  • Fourscore Beer Co
    * Collaboration with: Prototype Brewery and Meadery and Wolf Brewing Co.
  • Shabby Deck Craft Brewery
  • Suburban Brewing Company
  • Voodoo Brewing Company
  • Hitchhiker Brewing Company
  • Grist House Craft Brewery
  • Roundabout Brewery
  • East End Brewing Co.
  • Dancing Gnome
  • 11th Hour Brewing
  • Whitehorse Brewing
  • Four Points Brewing
  • Sly Fox Brewing Co.
  • Lost Tavern Brewing
  • Birthright Brewing Co.
  • Angry Erik Brewing
  • Naked Brewing Co.
  • Free Will Brewing
  • Imprint Beer Co.
  • Well Crafted Beer Company
  • Ten7 Brewing Company
  • Brothers Kershner Brewing Company
  • Bald Birds Brewing
  • Rebel Hill Brewing Company
  • Stickman Brews
  • Brewery ARS
  • Odd Logic Brewing
  • Second Sin Brewing

And that’s just the list of Pennsylvania breweries! And just the ones mentioned so far. Who knows if more will do it (hopefully). And thats also just one state out of fifty, and one part of a country out of fifty-three countries. So there is obviously a lot more breweries doing this! Some big names too like Equilibrium Brewing in New York are on board as well. So there is definitely a lot of momentum and weight behind this movement and project, which is absolutely fabulous! Keep up all the great work breweries!

Another link with information can be found at Hopculture: Hopculture – Other Half’s All Together Beer Project for Hospitality Workers.

Now we got all of that behind us, the whys, the hows, and the whats of this amazing and great beer. Lets get into the beer itself!

All Together by Ever Grain Brewing Co.

Beer: All Together
Brewery: Ever Grain Brewing Co.
Collaboration: Other Half Brewing Co.
Style: IPA – New England
ABV: 6.5%
IBU: None Listed
Untappd Description: We are proud to be apart of this open-ended beer collaboration masterminded by Other Half Brewing Co. 100% of our proceeds are going to Hospitality Assistance Response of Pennsylvania.

Some of the various breweries listed what they changed of the recipe or adjusted, if they swapped hops or malts or added adjuncts. Ever Grain’s Untappd listing doesn’t state any changes. So I’m assuming its near identical to the recipe given by Other Half Brewing. You can find their recipe on their All Together website, and you can click here directly for the recipe. I also saved a copy of the recipe, and I’ll post it here as well:

Other Half All Together recipe.

So this is what I’m assuming Ever Grain did, just on their system, with possible minor tweaks along the way.

Firstly – appearance is beautiful orange. It has that lovely New England IPA look to it. Golden orange juicy appearance to it, like pouring into a tall pint glass your morning OJ (not… the killer… or running back… but the drink); but this time with alcohol added! (Double win!). It has a little foam head to it that is light and fluffy with dispersed bubbles.

Aroma is pound for pound sound for sound pure hoppy juicy, citrus, fruity, and delicious smelling. Just cracking this open and pouring it already has my mouth watering and ready to drink it. I got notes of citrus, grapefruit, passionfruit, orange and tangerine, with a bit of zest or lime to it at the end. There isn’t any west coast IPA notes to be found in this, no evergreen tree, no earthy notes, no forestry like notes, all pure New England typical hop aromas and notes. The dry hopping really brings them out to the forefront.

Taste is phenomenal, and sadly makes this beer go waaaaaaaay too quickly. Me and my friend D. Scott drank two crowlers of this, way, too, quickly, while doing one of our Knights of Nostalgia sessions. I think we finished our crowlers in about fifteen minutes each. Which, thankfully this is only 6.5% so we weren’t rocked from basically pounding 32oz., but this was also just too delicious to even set down. It is very juicy, very dank, very delicious. Its both fruity and citrusy, with notes of grapefruit, passionfruit, orange and tangerine. Theres a bit of a lime / lemon twist at the end, but very subtle, barely noticeable, but there is definitely a citrus vibe to this that goes with the fruity juicy nature of the beer itself. And like I said, at 6.5% its not too heavy or overwhelming, even in a 32oz crowler; or if you get a 4pk of this, (4 x 16 = 64oz) you could probably handle a 4pk in an evening and be fine for work the next day. (Work…. work…. I vaguely recall work….). The mouthfeel is also very nice, its not too thick, not cloying, or heavy, or watery thin either, its just the right level of consistency and feel on the tongue. This is definitely an easy sippable beer or a quick quaffer. Which, obviously, I was pretty quick with mine, but your mileage may vary. Knowing also, that 100% of the proceeds is going to the Hospitality Assistance Response of Pennsylvania, also makes this just so much tastier and drinkable.

My Untappd Rating: ****.25
Global Untappd Rating: 4.26 (as of 5.14.20).

Cheers everyone. Hopefully you are all making it through this quarantine and lockdown relatively safe, sound, and mentally safe and sound. If you are looking to donate for hospitality workers, there is links here in this article, and the All Together Beer link has thee most information on that. As well as information if you are a brewer, home brewer, or commercial brewer looking to make the beer as well. So please check that out here: All Together – Beer – We’re All In This Together.

As always everyone, thanks for checking out the blog, click the like, the follow, the subscribe, and share, and do all those other cool things to help us out. We greatly appreciate it, and love all of our readers. Stay safe and healthy, and make sure to drink up lots of All Together to help our favorite bartenders! They are going to need it. Even when we re-open, things will be tough for them for a while, and probably dealing with idiots not wanting to follow CDC guidelines and the such will be all the more difficult for them. So please, help them out. Cheers!

Brewery Event: Bottle Share (Tattered Flag) https://thebeerthrillers.com/2020/02/12/brewery-event-bottle-share-tattered-flag/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=brewery-event-bottle-share-tattered-flag Wed, 12 Feb 2020 15:31:53 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=2145
Tattered Flag and Breweries in PA’s Bottle Share (February 8th, 2020).62+ Tickets were ‘sold’. Packed house down in the brewhouse of Tattered Flag. (Thats me in the red Pizza Boy shirt, and my friend D. Scott to my left.) (Photo Courtesy of Chad Balbi – Breweries in PA).

On February 8th, 2020, Tattered Flag and Breweries in PA co-hosted an event at the Tattered Flag Brewery in Middletown PA. It was a ticketed event and promoted across Tattered Flag’s social media and Breweries in PA’s social media (their Facebook page and their Facebook group). Tickets were free. Welcome to all that were to come out. According to Justin (brewer for Tattered Flag) 62 tickets were given out. Myself and my friend were two of those tickets, and so let me take you through the event.

Let’s back this up a bit from the time of the event. Starting with the event itself. It was first announced near the beginning of the year. Luckily it was a Saturday I was able to get off from work (a rarity in my case). And my friend D. Scott was also off and along for the idea. So, the premise of the event is simple – bring 2-3 (or more) beers. Everyone who comes to the event, does so, and once the event is underway you place your beers in the corresponding coolers (IPA, Sours, Wheats and Kolsches, Stouts), and then after everyone has grouped up, you start cracking beers and sampling and moving on.

The premise is simple and neat. Anyone whose ever done a beer / bottle / can share or swap at home with friends, its the same premise just on a much larger scale. (A 62+ person scale that is.)

Leading up to the event my friend stopped at Breski’s Beverage and picked up a four-pack of larger beers to bring with. He grabbed Thief Share (2016) by Strange Roots Experimental Ales, Blue Farm (2017) by Free Will Brewing Co, a German Chocolate Cake Stout from a brewery I’m drawing a blank on, and New Holland’s Dragon’s Milk (2019).

I had set up to do a beer trade with a guy from Eureka California. We were both set to send our packages on either January 31st, or February 1st. (I sent on 31st and showed proof.) He unfortunately, kept saying he would get to it… and get to it….. and he kept NOT getting to it…. and NOT getting to it. Finally, he promised he would expedite it next day to make up for its tardiness…. and I get a message from him “Sorry, it’d be 200$+ to expedite, so I sent it regular. Sorry it won’t be there in time.” …..Massive annoyance and disappointment on those fronts. So at last second, I had to figure out what I was bringing.

Unfortunately I had just ran through my cans from Tree House brought home by my friend D. Arndt. If I would have known…. I would have brought the Sap, Autumn, Julius, Haze, or Doppelganger I had. So I likewise stopped at Breski’s Beverage and picked up some beer for the event. I got Grimm Artisanal Ale’s I Still Love the Old World (2018), Lickinhole’s Virginia Black Bear, Clown Shoe’s Coffee Sombrero, and Trial by Wombat (mainly for the name and picture).

Saturday morning comes and I do my typical morning chores and errands and take Leela (my border collie) for a run. D. Scott is Ubering to Tattered Flag, and I’m going to meet him there. Planned to get there at 10:40, but ended up getting there closer to 10:50 with our tickets and my beer and meet him just inside the door. He shows me the beer he’s bringing and we go over our small sample size. At just a bit before 11AM, Justin comes through and tells everyone to follow him down into the brewhouse.

Since 2018 I’ve done some volunteer canning work with Tattered Flag – though recently they’ve stopped using volunteers now that their employee force is big enough to keep it all done in-house, so I’m quite familiar with their brewhouse and back of the brewery operations and location.

At the time, there’s not too many people yet. Maybe 15-20. Justin goes over the rules. (Big rule: don’t touch any valves. Little rule: throw your trash away. Big rule: DON’T TOUCH ANY VALVES. Little rule: put your beers in their appropriate tubs.) They had bussing tubs with a label for each: IPA, Sour / Saisons, Wheats / Kolsches, and Stouts. Bigger bottles were kept in the front or where room was for them.

The guys from Breweries in PA introduced themselves. And then we were off to the races (…or beers). Talked with the lady from Breweries in PA and she was saying how the Dayman can was the last “known in the wild” can to exist, due to them getting hit with a Cease and Desist from Disney. And we talked about Disney with recent news, and how past places have gotten hit with some C & D’s.

After sampling Dayman, and then Nightman, I saw a lovely looking Smoked Porter big bottle. Unfortunately I forget the name of it, and it appears I never checked it into Untappd (something I didn’t do too good of a job of). (Just like pictures, unfortunately I took no pictures of the event either, so I have no pictures of my own, and had to try and remember the beers I tried for Untappd later on.) So whoever brought the big bottle Smoked Porter, I’d love to know what it was. ….but also… oh boy that carbonation! As soon as I popped the cap on it, it just gushed. Foam everywhere, so much so that I had to set it down under the table over the grate, it just wouldn’t stop, for a good solid 2 minutes it kept going. (So yes, I apologize for being ‘that guy’, but….. it wasn’t my fault!)

A cache of the beers at the bottle / can share. Photo courtesy of Justin Hoak.

Me and D. Scott kinda hovered over the Stouts area. Talked to Justin and his girlfriend Aimee, about recent events with Tattered Flag, as well as Hibrewnation that took place, as well as the upcoming Prototype Brewery and Meadery and the Prototype Invitation Brewing Event.

The beer share at Tattered Flag. Photo courtesy of Justin Hoak.

After a few more samples, me and D. Scott headed back into the caverns a bit, where there was more space, as by now we were likely up to about 40+ people in attendance. And out by the brite tanks and fermenters it was getting pretty crowded. After a bit, the guys from Breweries in PA brought a few of the bussing trubs out into the side-room where we used to do the labeling for Tattered Flag’s canning run. They brought out a few beers of each type as well and so there was now a more mixed variety in the different areas.

While in the side-room, I branched out a bit from my stouts and sours and had a few IPAs. Bearded Iris’ Homestyle, Psycho Simcoe by Three 3’s, Ex Novo Brewing’s Spirits of the Dead, and Double Luv by East Branch Brewing. Hanging out, talking with D. Scott and some of our fellow drinkers in the area, we also cracked open the Black Tuesday (2017) by The Bruery, which was amazingly fantastic. While discussing the ridiculously high ABV on it (19.5%), one of the guys talked about the beer he brought from Nimble Hill, a Maple Stout in their Mysteria Series, that was a 25%. I’ve always been a huge fan of big ABV beers…. so my ears and eyes and nose, and mouth, all perked up. The kind gentleman went back and got it and brought it out. After a bit of a struggle getting the cork off of it, we each drew a good sample size of it (and I won’t lie and say I didn’t have two samples of it).

The description on Untappd for it reads:

MAPLE SYRUP STOUT
This super limited creation is an off shoot of Turbo Diesel.
But instead of using hops, we added a few gallons of maple syrup and a dash of molasses and fermented it to the limits.
The result is a thick dessert stout with a strong maple syrup and imperial stout finish, followed by hearty warming from the 25% abv. Served without carbonation for a smooth and velvety finish.

It was smooth, dry, but with an amazing maple syrup flavor. Tasted like drinking a maple syrup wine. It was pretty much fantastic. And the nice 25% ABV to it, certainly didn’t hurt. I would like to throw a shout out to Ryan Haraschak. Fantastic, gorgeous gem to bring to the bottle share! Kudos my man!

We also tried a gentleman’s RIS Homebrew that was wonderful as well. And somehow, quickly, we realized we were approaching the end of the time for the bottle share, so me and D. Scott went back by the fermenters to try some of the beers still over there.

While hanging out there, and chopping on some tortilla chips, the Harris Brewery guys came in. Got to talk to Harris guys for a long time about their upcoming brewery, black culture in brewing and craft beer, Allison Hill, the impact their hoping to make, the old Coke-Cola building / factory on the corner of 19th and Derry, the obstacles their having to overcome for their brewery, their GoFundMe vs. the Kickstarter, and much more. We also drank from their growler of their collaboration with The Vegetable Hunter which was fantastic. If you would like to support the Harris Family Brewery, and add to their GoFundMe you can do so here:

Harris Family Brewery Start-Up Go Fund Me

As the time dwindled down, we quickly tried to sample a last few beers. There was an Intuition Ales that I tried with a large dragon on it (wax sealed originally, no idea on the name), as well as two Hegemony Anniversary Beers from St. Boniface. Also back to back Black IPAs; one from Pour Man’s Brewing – Black Market, and the other from Heavy Seas – Night Swell. Also tried the 2SP and WaWa coffee stout – Winter Reserve. As well as a last sampling of the Candy Hearts by New Trail Brewing.

As it wrapped up, they told us to take anything we wanted that was unopened. Seeing my Lickinghole Virginia Black Bear unopened I grabbed that, as well as an IPA from Mainstay Brewing and one of the bakeries from The Bruery. My buddy grabbed a couple and we put them in the six-pack holder and took them out to my car and then came back in to use our free beer and food discount.

Tattered Flag with the (free) ticket, being the gracious host was giving one free pour with the ticket as well as 10% off food. D. Scott got an order of loaded chips, and I got Because I Was Inverted (Chocolate Covered Strawberry). His free drink was either the Custardy Tropic Like Its Hot or the Custardy Black Crumble. We had also sampled these in cans during the bottle share.

My list of beers sampled (that I was able to record on Untappd) was:
* Nightman (Stable 12 Brewing Company)
* Schmoojee Strawberry Orange Banana (Imprint Beer Co)
* Bible Belt (2019) (Evil Twin Brewing)
* Frucht: Fruit Punch (The Bruery Terreux)
* Churro Sombrero (Clown Shoes)
* Autumn Friend (Forest & Main Brewing Company)
* Spirits of the Dead (Ex Novo Brewing)
* Psycho Simcoe (Three 3’s Brewing Co.)
* Black Tuesday (2017) (The Bruery)
* Maple Stout, Mysteria Series (Nimble Hill Brewing)
* Double Luv (East Branch Brewing)
* Kriek Marriage Parfait (2015) (Brouwerji Boon)
* Black Market (Pour Man’s Brewing Company
* Night Swell (Heavy Seas Beer)
* Pack & Brass Coffee IPA (Wallenpaupack Brewing Company)
* I Still Love the Old World (Grimm Artisanal Ales)
* Bourbon Barrel Aged Hegemony Anniver7ary Reserve (Blue Wax) (St. Boniface Craft Brewing Co.)
* Bourbon Barrel Aged Hegemony Anniver8ary Reserve (Blue Wax) (St. Boniface Craft Brewing Co.)
* Cold Pro (Union Craft Brewing)
* Winter Reserve Coffee Stout (2SP Brewing Company / WaWa)
* Candy Hearts (New Trail Brewing Co.)
* Homestyle (Bearded Iris)
* Custardy: Blackberry Crumble (Tattered Flag)
* Custardy: Tropic Like Its Hot (Tattered Flag)
* Thief Share (2016) (Strange Roots Experimental Ales)
* Blue Farm (2017) (Free Will Brewing Co.)
* Gingerbread Crunchee (Other Half Brewing Co.)
* Double Vice Coffee Porter (Grist House Craft Brewery)
* Chili Nelson Hazy Habenero (The Vegetable Hunter)
* Winter Wassailand (The Vegetable Hunter / Harris Family Brewing)
* Dayman (Stable 12 Brewing)

These are the ones I remembered / checked-in on Untappd anyway. There were so many more I didn’t get to try, some I definitely wanted to. I saw some Aslin cans, I believe 4th Anniversary Sours, that I missed out on, as well as a few Other Half’s and similar. In the comments – for those of you who went – I’d love to see what you brought, had, and what was your favorites.

This was a fantastic event. I’ve been to some friend / home beer bottle / can shares, and its always a blast. Passing around beers, sampling, and talking about beer and just hanging out with good people. The craft beer community is an exceptional and diverse community and its so great to talk to so many different people. Bottle shares are like mini-brewfests in a way, sampling a ton of different beers from different places / breweries that you most likely won’t get into contact with. Its not a bad way to kill a Saturday morning, thats for sure.

My favorites that I got to sample were: Black Tuesday (2017) by The Bruery and the Nimble Hill Maple Stout Mysteria (the 25%). D. Scott said his favorite was also the 25% Maple Stout as well as the Custardy: Blackberry Crumble.

It was great of Tattered Flag to put up some of their own beers in the share, a great gesture on their part. Also, humorous note, I think I did see a Blue Moon in one of the tubs, not 100% sure though, but I think I did. Kudos to whoever brought that. I did think it’d be funny to bring a single Coors Light bottle or Miller Lite High Life bottle and sneak it in, but didn’t know how it’d go over.

The Kill Shot from the Beer Share at Tattered Flag hosted by Tattered Flag and Breweries in PA. (Photo courtesy of: Chad Balbi)

As you can see from the kill shot, there was a ton of great beer brought in, and sampled and served. Breweries from all over Pennsylvania, as well as numerous other big breweries like Other Half, Bearded Iris, Aslin, Dogfish Head, Brewery of Omnegang, Grimm Artisanal Ales, as well as some homebrew, and some heavy PA hitters like Free Will, Tattered Flag, Strange Roots, Imprint Beer Co, Dancing Gnome, Troegs Independent Craft Brewing, and New Trail, and even upcoming brewery Harris Family. It was a wonderful and diverse selection, bottles, bombers, growlers, crowlers, cans, and even wine bottles.

Interested in reading some reviews of beers from some of these places, you can check out my beer blog: The Beer Thrillers. You can also read our other article on Breweries in PA: Touring the Breweries that Surround Harrisburg. (Also located here: Breweries Around the Outskirts of Harrisburg.)

We are currently listed on FeedSpot’s Top 100 Beer Blogs at #9, and have been there for a few weeks now (moved up from #11). (If you would like to write for us, you can contact us through our contact page. Or if you would like us to write for you.)

You can check us out on Facebook as well as Twitter. Or just search for us – Facebook – The Beer Thrillers – and on Twitter – @thebeerthriller.

The blog is ran by me – B. Kline, and mainly written by me, but other writers for the blog include J. Doncevic, AJ Brechbiel (of Default Brewing). We also have Let Us Drink Beer Blog do some contributions as a guest writer.

I also do podcasts with D. Scott and Esteban – So a Mexican and a Scot Walk Into a Bar… where we discuss beer, pop culture, movies, TV shows, and much more. Always hilarious and always insightful, so make sure to check that out as well.

(Ok, that concludes the article for Breweries in PA. The rest from here on out, is just for the Beer Thrillers faithful and my blog only. Its also a little more personal and detailed than the above, so keep reading if you want to hear more.)

So as per usual with me, after the beer share event, my night didn’t end. It was about 3:30-4PM by the time we finished up at the Tattered Flag bar. Way too early to call it a day. Being in the area, we decided to check out the Lancaster Brewing spot off of Eisenhower Boulevard in Harrisburg. Neither me nor D. Scott had ever been there. And this checks off a “new brewery location” that I want to do each month. (January was Liquid Noise Brewing, so February will be Lancaster Brewing, and hopefully March – before they close up – will be Stoudt’s.) Its funny that neither of us have ever been here to this location. Its so close, and we’ve jumped and hit all of the Harrisburg breweries numerous times before.

While there we met up with friends D. Arndt, Youngblood, and Youngblood’s girlfriend. I did a flight, D. Scott got a draft of their eggnog, and I have no recollection of what the others got. My flight included:
* Jam Series #22 Mexican Style Lager
* Jam Series #21 Gingerbread Spiced Brown Ale
* Lancaster Lager
* Jam Series – Track #20 Eggnog Blond
* Jam Series – Track #19 Chili Smoked Baltic Porter
* Winter Warmer

Lancaster Brewing Company’s Spiced Gingerbread

All were pretty tasty. I enjoyed the Smoked Porter the most with the Spiced Gingerbread coming in second. Wasn’t a huge fan of the eggnog blond, but I’m not a fan of eggnog so kind of knew that going into it. Drew loved his, but then again, he’s a huge eggnog fan. So mileage may vary on that type of beer.

Lancaster Brewing Company’s Mexican Lager

Finally around 730-8PM or so we left and went to D. Arndt’s house, where we hung out with him and his fiance Kat and his dogs (the one of which is a Corgi named Indiana Bones). While there he had a can of Intemperance by Tree House which was absolutely delicious.

Intemperance by Tree House Brewing

Look for me to be adding the Intemperance to my series on Tree House. Also, most likely tonight Doppelganger will be going up to finish what was originally the series. But now, with the addition of Intemperance, the series will be going from 5 to 6, making it a nice easy and sensible six-pack. Makes sense for a beer blog (a beer blog making sense?!), I like it.

So, this was supposed to be written and was supposed to go up Sunday, the 9th. But… work was crazy, as it was a ticket promotion give-away and we were swamped there, and afterwards, I was supposed to go to D. Scott to watch the Oscar’s (and drink the remaining of the beer share beers), but… Haley forgot the crowler of Rotunda Brewing Company’s ‘Beautiful Trauma’ that I got her, so I had to swing back to work and then deliver it to her at Irgo’s Tavern. Where I then proceeded to stay and play pool with several co-workers until 1AM. So obviously… no posting that night.

Then Monday I did go over to D. Scott’s and we watched Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (finally got around to seeing it, fantastic movie, and Tarantino is still just as good as he always was). So once again, no blog posting Monday. But, last night I did start this, and sadly, only after editing, getting to finish it this morning. Sorry for the delay in things, but I rather edit and make sure I like the way blog looks, and that there’s no misspellings or grammar problems or anything (though I’m sure one or two will still sneak through). There’s two ways to write:

“You either write sober and edit drunk, or write drunk and edit sober.”

I also finally got that California beer mail Tuesday. Looks like some delicious brews to drink down and dive into and review for you all.

So definitely expect to see some beer reviews come out of that 10-pack. There’s a lot of tasty ones (I am super looking forward to the Chocolate Donut porter.)

Blog news – I am going to be trying to get 2 blogs up a day for the next few days to catch up some of the beer reviews I’m behind on. Fingers crossed anyway. This blog post is also going up on Breweries in PA’s website, so you’ll be able to check it out there (albeit abbreviated). Once its live, I’ll come in and edit this to include it here.

Tomorrow (Thursday, the 13th), I have yet another funeral to go to. This time my Uncle (mother’s brother in law) passed away. (Last Thursday was a funeral for my Great Uncle, my father’s Uncle.) In the evening Funck’s in Palmyra is doing a tap takeover for New Trail. I might be stopping out for that (might not, depends on time). New Trail makes some great beers, so I’d love to check it out.

Some beer reviews that are due up are Doppelganger and Intemperance, New Heights I Cannot Tell a Lie, Boneshire Brew Work’s Anagnorsis, Revision’s Pete’s Stache, Rivertown’s Triple Belgian, and much more. So be on the lookout for a lot of beer reviews coming at you in the upcoming days.

Like I said earlier in the post (mainly for the Breweries in PA page), please check out our Facebook, Twitter, and other social medias, and please click follow, like, subscribe, both on those platforms and here on the blog itself. You can enter your e-mail at the bottom to get notifications immediately whenever a new blog post hits the internet, and we’d greatly appreciate it. We also love it when you use the ‘rating’ at the bottom so we know how we are performing, and click the LIKE down below as well. Also, even more importantly, we LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, feedback. So leave us a comment, or two, or three, or forty-four. I try to respond and reply as quickly as I’m able to. And if you ever want, you can contact us at our contact page and leave me a message.

Thanks everyone so much for reading, and hopefully you enjoyed it, and if you were at the event, hopefully you had as much of a blast as I did (and D. Scott). (Which speaking of, be on the lookout for some new podcasts on LOST Seasons 3 & 4, Fullmetal Alchemist, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and potentially / possibly / hopefully BoJack Horseman.)

Cheers everyone!

Beer Review: Wolf Prints (Imprint Beer Co.) https://thebeerthrillers.com/2019/07/18/beer-review-wolf-prints-imprint-beer-co/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=beer-review-wolf-prints-imprint-beer-co Thu, 18 Jul 2019 21:20:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=217 So somehow this got lost in the interwebs and I was able to manage to pull this out. (In other words, I drunkenly saved it into drafts instead of publishing it, and now getting around to touching it up and publishing it, my apologies all around to all those who were told this was coming out and it never did).

But have no fear, if I tell you it’s going to get published, it’s going to get published, it might be old, and all, but it’s still going to get published.

This is how you spend a stormy night, Wolf Prints (by Imprint Beer Co. and Wolf Brewing Co.), Norse Mythology, and thunder.

It’s a dark and stormy night, there’s thunder and lightening like crazy, raining to the point where there is cats and dogs cluttering up the gutters of the streets (and possibly a creepy clown trying to grab kids named George), what do you do? ….Well, the answer is obvious: you drink. ….And you read.

So spoiler alert to my own blog on this one: definitely try both of these if you can. That is; drink Wolf Prints by Imprint Beer Co (in collaboration with Wolf Brewing Co) and read Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman. You won’t be disappointed by either of these; especially if you like beer, and especially if you like mythology or Norse, or Thor, or Loki, or like sour beer, or like IPAs, or like sour IPAs, or what have you.

But be forewarned about the beer…. it is an odd one. Odd in that way that its both sour and IPA. If you’ve had any of the sour IPAs from Hudson Valley then you have an idea on this one. If you haven’t had any sour IPAs or Farmhouse IPAs or similar styles, your tastebuds are definitely in for a surprise.

This one surely packs a punch and a wallop and a kick to the stomach. So strap on a seatbelt and get ready for it.

Beer: Wolf Prints
Brewery: Imprint Beer Co. (Collaboration: Wolf Brewing Co.)
Style: Sour – Fruited
ABV: 7%
IBU: No IBU
Untappd Write-Up: Sour IPA smoothie with mangoes, pink guava, Tahitian vanilla beans, hibiscus petals and lactose.

So right away, you can tell that the Untappd listing on it is “Sour Fruited” but the write-up on it is “Sour IPA”. With this beer, the terms are pretty interchangeable and I don’t think there’s truly a self-contained term “Sour IPA” yet, so things are a bit muddy and murky in this area.

The adjuncts are mangoes, pink guava, Tahitian vanilla beans, lactose, and hibiscus petals. Thus its obvious why it has this beautiful pink glow and hue to it.

If you are unprepared for sour IPAs, be ready now. Because its not like a traditional sour and its definitely not like a traditional IPA. So let’s break it down like I do; appearance, aroma, taste.

First off, appearance is a pink. A dark but sorta bright pink. Kind of like a glowing pink that is still dark enough not to see through. Its an interesting look and throws you off a bit. At least takes you aback and makes you wonder what exactly are you drinking and if its really beer. (It is… and its worth drinking, don’t worry.)

The aroma is an immediate whiff of guava and a very funkyness. You get an instant ‘whoah this is going to be funky’ as soon as you crack the can and then the guava hits you, followed by the mango. There’s some kind of floral backdrop not sure if thats the hibiscus petals or hops or what.

And at first sip…. oh boy… oh yea…. its funky. And you are down to the party immediately. It is extremely tart, extremely funky, and a huge wave of guava off of the start. As you drink and gulp her down, you get some floral, some smoothness from the vanilla beans and lactose, and you get the mango making a burst-in door-stomping appearance at the end like the Kool-Aid man.

My Untappd Rating: ****.25
Global Untappd Rating: 3.92 (as of 7.18.19, updated from the draft date to the published date).

Beer Reviews: Saison and Hurry Up And Wait (Newfangled Brew Works) https://thebeerthrillers.com/2019/07/16/beer-reviews-saison-and-hurry-up-and-wait-newfangled-brew-works/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=beer-reviews-saison-and-hurry-up-and-wait-newfangled-brew-works Wed, 17 Jul 2019 01:45:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=189
NewFangled Brew Works

So an impromptu night out with a friend for a few drinks means…. an impromptu chance to do a beer review (or two). And as you can tell, being an impromptu review session, the pics aren’t quite up to snuff (being out with friends will make it a bit harder to get the best quality pictures, especially because I do more yapping as I drink and forget to grab that nice beautiful shot as soon as I get my beer). But I’ve been wanting to get back to Newfangled Brew Works (was there for their opening and one other time), so I’ve been wanting to show them some love here on the blog and do a review or two of their beers, and the Hurry Up and Wait was a big huge ‘deal’ so that deserves a review.

This is a two-part beer review, so not a full “multiple beer reviews” style post, but two separate beers that I got a chance to have on draft while out with friends and throwing up a review. The Hurry Up and Wait probably deserves its own post, primarily due to the massiveness behind the making of it. But, since that was done by PA Breweries and they have their own blog and Facebook group and page, its probably best that they’ve already done it anyway (and the beer has been out for quite some time now, so a rudimentary posting by me on it should suffice I believe). Just know, if you want a much more in-depth review on the creation of that beer (which was a ridiculous 20+ brewery collaboration with proceeds going to Veterans, which is a fantastic idea) you can track down the creation story and reviews on it by going to the PA Breweries Facebook page or group.

Likewise this won’t be an actual brewery review either, as it was my third (or fourth?) visit to Newfangled and I really didn’t think this was the time to do a write-up for that. But I will throw up some pictures of the place and talk about it a bit.

NewFangled Brew Works logo.

NewFangled Brew Works has been open for a bit now and been pumping out a good selection of clean, crisp, clear beers. They’ve actually been busy enough that they aren’t even getting a chance to touch their pilot small batch system that they’ve gotten and it sits collecting dust, as they try to keep up and meet demands on their regular production beers.

They like to keep their beer names low-key and simple (IPA, Saison, Double IPA, Brut IPA, Stout, (Nitro) Stout, Wheat Ale #1, Red Ale, etc.) so it should never be too hard to remember for those walking over from the development its built in, or those ordering over to the restaurant Koda. So far (according to Untappd) they’ve produced 15 different named beers, which I’ve had the pleasure of having had 9 of them so far. (Two of which were last night). So let’s get into the first one.

NewFangled Brew Works’ Saison

Beer: Saison
Brewery: NewFangled Brew Works
Style: Farmhouse Ale – Saison
ABV: 6.8%
IBU: 25
Untappd Write-Up: Just in time for summer we have a very effervescent saison using Spalter Select and Strisselspalt hops. It pairs well with sunshine on the patio.

Well, we didn’t get a chance to pair this with sunshine due to a massive storm just having rolled through the mid-state (got to drive through a lovely blast of downpour along I-81 to get from the Casino to the brewery), but it did pair nicely with friendship, chatting, and hanging out. Which is the primary purpose of any beer.

I got to meet a friend from/through work Rich Bowra and his son and daughter in law and grandson for a drink (well, two drinks) after work. Luckily for him, looking out the back window of the brewery you can see his house, so he’s in fine walking (or stumbling) distance to get home.

The saison is a nice easy sipping drink. There isn’t really a ton to go on with it though. You get the juniper and it has a nice floral sipping flavor, but there isn’t a ton of flavor.

The clarity is there and its a crystal clear light watery yellow look to it. The aroma is a light airy floral with hint of juniper. There is no head (as there’s not supposed to be one) and it does have the right carbonation to it.

The biggest knock against it is that its possibly too light. There’s not a whole lot of body and there’s not a whole lot of substance and action going on for it. There is a nice underlying dryness to it similar to champagne in a way that brings out the juniper nicely and makes it crisp and a good sipping drink for companionship and chatter.

Overall it is a perfectly serviceable beer that won’t blow anybody’s hair back but will be just enough to sit and sip and chat with.

My Untappd Rating: ***.75
Global Untappd Rating: 3.6 (as of 7.16.19)

Hurry Up and Wait, the massive brewery collaboration IPA made at NewFangled Brew Works

Been wanting to get a chance to review this or at least make a mention of it or two, just due to the sheer amount of breweries involved. This was a gigantic, massive endeavor started by the PA Brewery Facebook group/page and done with 20 some breweries all for Veterans. The proceeds of which went to Veterans and this was created here at NewFangled.

Many of the brewers from the various breweries involved in the project (you can see the guys from Tattered Flag to the right, along with Collusion, NewFangled, and many others).

The Beer Busters Podcast has an article on it here that summarizes some of the content nicely: https://beerbusterspodcast.com/breweries-in-pa-announce-details-of-hurry-up-and-wait-state-wide-collab-brew-to-support-veterans/ . So definitely give that a check-out if you want some more background information on the beer, as well as look up the PA Breweries Facebook page and group for more information.

So here’s a list of all the breweries involved in the project:
Production Brewery: NewFangled Brew Works
Breweries involved: Stony Run Brew House, Burgh’ers Brewing, Tattered Flag Brewery, Cox Brewing Company (CBC), Black Forest Brewery, 2nd Story Brewing, Aston Abbey Brewing Company, Blueprint Brewing Co, Couch Brewery, Collusion Tap Works, GearHouse Brewing Company, Hop Hill Brewing Company, Imprint Beer Co, McAllister Brewing Company, Root Down Brewing Company, Shubrew, Stone Bridge Brewing Company, Ten7 Brewing Company, Weyerbacher Brewing Company, Whitehorse Brewing LLC, Seven Sirens Brewing Co.

So as you can see…. just a few breweries were involved in the creation of this. A very diverse and large assortment of breweries from all over the state, all with Veteran workers. Some of the local to Central PA breweries on that list are: NewFangled Brew Works, Tattered Flag Brewery, Cox Brewing Company, and Collusion Tap Works. Also some big names on that list that many will recognize such as Weyerbacher Brewing and Imprint Beer Co.

A lot of hard work and a lot of planning went into the making of this beer and its great to see how it benefits the community and the Veterans.

Hurry Up and Wait at NewFangled Brew Works

Beer: Hurry Up and Wait

Style: IPA – Imperial / Double
ABV: 8%
IBU: 45
Untappd Write-Up: Made with Deer Creek malt and Yakima Veterans Blend hops. Proceeds from pint sales will be donated to PA Veterans Foundation.

This is a great traditional West Coast bitter IPA. It looks, smells, and tastes like the old school IPAs I grew up on before the haze craze took hold. And this stacks up against those and will stack up to any of the IPAs you grew up on as well.

The beer is a beautiful straw colored darker IPA. Has a wonderful foamy head that hangs for a bit as you drink and the golden straw hue is just dark enough to not let you fully completely see through it.

The aroma is exactly what you are wanting from an IPA. A great hoppy nose filling your nostrils with that wonderful hop smell like you’re in the backend of a brewery. (Which is honestly one of the Top 3 smells of the world.)

The drink is smooth and crisp and bitter like a good IPA should be. Has the hoppy bite and a wonderful flavor. A good dry bitter IPA with a good aftertaste that makes you wanting a second, third, and fourth, is a hallmark of a good beer done well and made well. These are the beers made for summer and made for a good long day of day-drinking and chatting and having a good time.

The Big Boy at NewFangled Brew Works

Now a few words on the NewFangled Brew Works brewery and location.

Its built into a dual building just inside of Union Station development off of Union Deposit road (off of Nye’s Road). It shares its space with a fancy dining restaurant named Koda. As I said for Rich and many of the other brewery regulars, its walking distance to their houses here in the development community (which is perfect, no driving). The restaurant attached (Koda) is fine dining and a bit pricey, but from everything I’ve been told incredible food (I’ve yet to eat there).

The brewery setup at NewFangled

They got off to a bit of a rocky start when they first opened due to some of the issues of the government shutdown at the time, and getting their own beers setup (they opened with many taps flowing, but all from local breweries like Ever Grain, St. Bonifice, Tattered Flag, and Boneshire; rather than their own). But they have since conquered that and are now actually having trouble keeping up with the demands of the regulars.

The bar area when they opened.

They are growing quickly and producing a good number of stable beers. Nothing has been too out there and crazy or ‘hair blown’ but they are producing legitimate, well done, well styled beers, and that is a good consistent presence.

The bar during the installation of tanks.

The bar is long and spacious and with plenty of seats. There is also numerous tables along the windows leading up to the small band stage. They host regular (small, local) bands, as well as do regular trivia nights and many more. They also have two ping pong tables setup, cornhole, and a few other brewery games (like giant Jenga and small games for children).

In the backend corner by the back entrance there is a “taco truck” (though its built into the wall) that has the brewery food. Obviously this is mostly taco and related foods.

All in all, if you find yourself out along Nye’s Road or Union Deposit Road or wanting to check out a new brewery, definitely give NewFangled Brew Works a check. If nothing worse you’ll get some decent food, and a nice atmosphere. The beers are nice, flowing, and everyone is very easy going. You won’t be disappointed.

Imprint Beer Co. Doubles Production with New Tanks – What It Means for Craft Beer Fans https://thebeerthrillers.com/2019/05/23/imprint-beer-co-doubles-production-with-new-tanks-what-it-means-for-craft-beer-fans/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=imprint-beer-co-doubles-production-with-new-tanks-what-it-means-for-craft-beer-fans Thu, 23 May 2019 14:30:46 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=15628

Imprint Beer Co., located in Hatfield, PA, has quickly made a name for itself in the craft beer world since its opening in September 2018. In less than a year, demand has skyrocketed, and the brewery is now expanding its capacity to keep up with the thirst for its innovative brews. Thanks to the installation of larger brewing equipment, Imprint is set to double its production, making it an exciting time for craft beer lovers.

We recently sat down with co-founders Ryan Diehl and Richard “Sid” Sidman to discuss this rapid growth, and what beer enthusiasts can look forward to as Imprint scales up.

Imprint Beer Co. Doubles Production with New Tanks – What It Means for Craft Beer Fans

The Imprint Experience

Imprint Beer Co. has gained a loyal following with its diverse and bold lineup, which includes IPAs, kettle sours, fruited pale ales, and their iconic “Schmoojee” series. Known for delivering intense and vibrant flavors, Imprint’s popularity is reflected in the buzzing atmosphere during any can release day. The energy is electric, and the demand for their limited-edition releases has only grown stronger.

That’s why the need for an expansion came sooner rather than later. “We’ve been blown away by the support,” says co-owner Ryan Diehl. “To keep giving our customers what they want, it became clear we needed to increase our brewing capacity.”

Doubling Capacity: New Equipment, New Possibilities

The expansion includes the addition of two new 15-barrel fermenters and a 15-barrel brite tank, which significantly boosts their brewing power. These join the brewery’s original setup of four 7-barrel fermenters and two 7-barrel brite tanks. With the new equipment, Imprint will be able to double its production, targeting an annual output of approximately 1,100 barrels.

But the production boost is just the beginning. The new tanks allow Imprint to can more beer than ever before. By teaming up with a mobile canning service, they’ll now be able to can beer on a four-week schedule, ensuring fans always have access to their favorite brews. They’re also expanding their cooler space by 50% to accommodate the increased volume of cans and crowlers, and they’ll be adding 12 more taps behind the bar to support even more on-site options.

More Brew Days, More Beer

To meet this increased demand, Imprint Beer Co. is shifting from brewing two days a week to four. They’ve also brought on additional brewing staff to manage the larger workload and ensure the high quality of their beer remains consistent as they scale. “This is a huge step for us,” adds Richard “Sid” Sidman. “We’re committed to growing responsibly and keeping the quality of our beer front and center.”

While Imprint does distribute to a handful of local accounts, the primary focus is on taproom sales. Keeping most of the product in-house allows them to offer an unbeatable experience for customers who come to the brewery for fresh beer, limited releases, and an ever-rotating selection of experimental brews.

What This Means for Imprint’s Future

The new tanks are already installed, and the brewing process is well underway. The expansion not only meets current demand but sets the stage for even more growth in the coming years. For craft beer fans, this means more frequent can releases, a wider selection of beers on tap, and a growing lineup of exciting flavors that Imprint has become known for.

For those who haven’t yet visited Imprint Beer Co., now is the perfect time to stop by, grab a pint or a crowler, and see why this brewery is quickly becoming a staple in Pennsylvania’s craft beer scene. With new tanks, more beer, and a growing presence, Imprint is poised to make an even bigger mark on the craft beer world.
