In an early morning social media post today, Michael Clements, owner and founder of Idiom Brewing announced his intentions of stepping down and leaving the business. He reiterated how Idiom Brewing is open and active, but is for sale. (See our article: Idiom Brewing Listed For Sale.)

The brewery is located in Frederick Maryland along the canal at 340 E Patrick St #104, Frederick, MD 21701. One of our personal favorites here at The Beer Thrillers, we’ve covered their Star Wars beers, their Mario themed beer, as well as some of their events (like their World MS Day beer) on the blog.

IDIOM REMAINS OPEN BUT IS FOR SALE!

Michael Clements post on Idiom Brewing’s Facebook account this morning:

IDIOM REMAINS OPEN BUT IS FOR SALE!
Here is a message from our founder:
Idiom Brewing Friends and Fans,
A few months ago I announced that I was listing our production brewery for sale in an effort to downsize, streamline and focus our efforts on our taproom and our overall customer experience. While that effort was the main goal at that time, I also did some soul-searching regarding my personal life, what I’ve accomplished as the owner of Idiom, with the help of the many wonderful staff who currently work at Idiom (and those who have come before), and where the path in this life leads.
After much thought and many long nights of deliberation, I have decided that it’s time for me to move on and to allow new ownership an opportunity to take the Idiom brand to the next level. As such, last week I listed Idiom for sale, including its two locations (the taproom and production brewery) as well as all rights to the brand.
This was by no means an easy decision. I poured (pardon the pun) my life into Idiom. I spent many sleepless nights running draft lines, writing recipes and responding to customer comments / concerns. I worked a full-time job while still brewing every day and pouring beer at night. I lived and breathed it. It was and still is my baby. However, just like all children, you must let them go at some point. Because they can be so much more without you. Now is that time.
While I will miss Idiom and will always look back on it fondly, I am hopeful that new ownership, whoever they may be, will take up the Idiom name and continue its legacy. I hope they continue to provide a welcoming place where people from all walks of life can gather to enjoy a beer and each other. I hope they continue to be a hub in the Frederick brewery scene, and they continue to innovate and provide unique experiences and unique flavors for you – my family and friends.
This isn’t goodbye. This is a cheers and well-wishes to each of you!
May you all have happy and full lives and may we cross paths again and share in good food and good drink!
With much love and admiration,
Michael Clements
We will keep everyone updated and posted as we get more information! We personally wish Michael the best and good luck with all future endeavors. As I said above, Idiom Brewing holds many fond memories here at The Beer Thrillers, and we wish him, and all involved the best and good luck.

A collage of some of our recent Patio Beers (as seen on our Instagram page)

There is Something About Those Back Patio Beers

There is something about those out back patio beers.  Wait, it’s too damn hot out today for that.  We will be having this evening’s beer inside!

Henry Hill laughing in the Goodfellas

While I was pregnant with our daughter, Scarlet, Ben took his first crack at hardscaping a patio area off the back porch.  I’ll spare you the details, but it was a long daunting process that quickly got out of hand.  I mean, nothing goes as simply as you hope but, when it involves a large hole in the ground and 10 feet on concrete it gets crazy.  No, this isn’t the start of a mob movie!

You can understand when Ben finally finished the original plans for the patio, we were very grateful.  Even on humid evenings we have been grabbing some patio time with a beer since early in the year.  The little spot that was created to find peace and relaxation needs a beer to go with it.

(As always – you can check out our Instagram to see all of our beer pics, adventures, behind the scenes photos and videos, reels, memes, and links to some of our other articles and maps, hike pictures, board game pictures, and all kinds of things.)

The latest brews we have enjoyed together are Idiom Brewing out of the Blue on July 1, Heavy Seas Hazy Cannon and Tropicannon on July 1 , Idiom Brewing Emotional Rollercoaster July 4th, Last Thursday 11th Schnitz Ale Brewery Boozendorf ale.

Each time it feels like a major relief to relax outside with a well-crafted beer and finish out the day.  Especially being able to chat and vent about a stressful day with a friend or the love of your life.  The patio beer also counts if you are alone though. This is the beer that when you finish you feel refreshed.  Given the time of year patio beers are normally fruity or light.

No matter where you live or frequently hang out, grab yourself a “patio beer”, preferably from a local craft brewery and relax!

This wasn’t our patio but we did have beers in a “patio” at Boneshire this past Friday (The Beer Thrillers at Boneshire Brew Works – Instagram).

Ben had the AuZealand and I had the Flying Hawaiian.  And yes, we had these in the parking lot picnic table area.  It still counts as part of the patio beer discussion.  This isn’t like Cheers but each brewery we tend to write about should make you feel like you belong.  Like it’s your 3rd home.

We also enjoyed a patio beer at YAH Brew Kolsch for CJ June 30th  (Benefit for CJ) (The Beer Thrillers at YAH Brew – Instagram). It’s a small patio outside of Yah Brew but it continues that vibe of feeling welcome at the neighborhood watering hole.

Some of our other fav patio spots to have a beer: Sworn Brewing, Cold Spring Brewing Company , Wolf Brewing, Boneshire Brew Works, Ever Grain Brewing’s open patio area, Troegs Brewery’s patio and beer garden; and honestly there’s so many more – too many to even begin to list really! But here is some pictures from the different places.

Amy Out

Thank you for reading down our bit of memory lane and viewing some of our patio beer pics. Ben wants to do even more with the patio in the future, including building a paver based bar, as well as an outdoor brick oven (a pizza oven). He also wants to set a block up of cement to take the handprints of the girls as well as our dog Leela.

Thank you for joining us today, and make sure to join us on our Instagram page, please follow us on there, we are hoping to hit 1K followers by the end of summer!

New Years Day https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/12/31/new-years-day/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=new-years-day Sun, 31 Dec 2023 05:05:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=13454 New Years Day

Ok, my Pennsylvania Dutch is about to come out a little bit.  Pork and Sauerkraut on New Year’s Day is a tradition in my family.  Served with mashed potatoes of course!  I know, I know, sometimes the sauerkraut isn’t so pleasant.  My mom perfected the recipe to take out quite a bit of the tartness and sourness.  We always cut up an apple to put in the sauerkraut, to give it a little sweetness.  Also sautéing some onions and searing the pork in the sautéed onions.  Mix those sautéed onions in with the sauerkraut.

Then roast the pork in the sauerkraut to cook it through in the oven.

I’m at a bit of a cross roads when it comes to pairing a beer with this yearly meal.  I think a very malty and sweet hefeweizen will pair nicely with the palate cleansing of the sauerkraut.  I’d reach for a Level Up Hefeweizen by Idiom Brewing Company.  Level Up comes in at a 3.79 overall rating on untapped.  It has a 5.6% ABV, just like a good Hefeweizen should!  It is described on Untapped as “Brewed with 60% malted white wheat and a touch of honey malt, then fermented to provide a balanced profile that sits squarely between clove and banana.  Super smooth, super creamy with a bready finish and light bitterness”

When you are enjoying that pork and sauerkraut dinner pair it with a hefeweizen if you are still afraid of the sour or tartness of the sauerkraut. Then when I go for seconds I will pair it with a good sturdy stout.  A strong stout is usually what you would reach for to compliment a nice pork dinner.  I’d grab a Wookies and Cream Oatmeal stout from Tall Tails Brewing Company.

Wookies and Cream comes in on Untapped with a 3.77 overall rating.  It has a 6.11% ABV and is given a rather.  This stout is so smooth it is dangerous.  It will go down even smoother with a delicious pork dinner.

May 30th is World MS Day

World MS Day

World MS Day – May 30th 2023

World MS (Multiple Sclerosis) Day is tomorrow May 30th (it is recognized every year on the May 30th).  A day to celebrate global solidarity and hope for the future; according to World MS Day Org.

Tomorrow The Beer Thrillers will recognize and support World MS Day (Event) in Frederick Maryland at Idiom Brewery Idiom Brewing Company is awesome enough to support the cause by donating a portion of the proceeds to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.  Every year we are working BUT this year we are both were able to take some time to escape and support such a worthy cause.

Beer at Idiom Brewing Company

We will definitely be trying to the special brew for the day in honor of World MS Day. An Orange Creamsicle Smoothie Sour. Orange is the Multiple Sclerosis awareness color and it’s just so fitting.   Last time The Beer Thrillers visited Idiom Brewing it was after an awesome hike at Annapolis Rocks and we visited 3 other breweries all along Carroll Creek.

Carroll Creek as viewed from Idiom Brewing

One of the best parts of the brewery community is the unwavering willingness to support such worthy causes and also, we’ve witnessed the brewery community’s support of other breweries too!  When we start to think about which breweries we want to go check out on any given day with free time, a brewery with this amount of thoughtfulness for a worth charity will always pop up first on our list.

Research, treatment and disease modifying therapies (DMTs) for Multiple Sclerosis have come a long way in the past 10 years.  What is MS?  According to the National Multiple Sclerosis website: Multiple sclerosis is an immune-mediated disease. This means that an abnormal response of the body’s immune system causes the disease. In this case, the immune system attacks the central nervous system (CNS) by mistake. The CNS is made up of the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves.

A normal nerve vs. a nerve inflicted with Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis is a relentless disease that when a patient is finally diagnosed it impacts entire families.  There is currently no cure or way to repair the damage MS has already done by the time a DMT is given to the patient.  The multiple sclerosis community will always have support from The Beer Thrillers.  Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us to connect on any future non – profit fundraising events at breweries.

Ben jumping on real quick. Been a busy few days. Friday, Drew and I went to YAH Brew, and then did some filming back at Knights of Nostalgia studios, Saturday we took Scarlet to Zoo America at Hershey, Sunday (yesterday) we had a Lunch and Dinner picnic at my sister’s (we were also supposed to go to Cox Brewing Company for a homebrewing meet up, but timing didn’t allow it), and today, we had a parade in Hummelstown (which Scarlet slept through, including the firetrucks, Civil War re-enactment gun blasts, Lower Dauphin band, and more), and then had a picnic at our house (was also supposed to go to Drew’s for a Knights of Nostalgia filming with Josh from MasterMind X Studios, and streaming session, but once again, timing didn’t quite work out). So its certainly been a busy weekend!

Thanks for reading everyone!

Cheers All!

Beer Review: Level Up (Idiom Brewing) https://thebeerthrillers.com/2022/03/10/beer-review-level-up-idiom-brewing/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=beer-review-level-up-idiom-brewing Fri, 11 Mar 2022 02:30:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=8930
Drinking a Level Up by Idiom Brewing while playing Mario Kart 8 on Mario Day

It’s a me – Mario!

We all know our favorite little plump Italian plumber who enjoys jumping on mushrooms that may not be politically correctly named…. thats right…. Luigi!

Er….. wait…. no…. I mean, Mario! Its a me – MARIO!

And of course you know today of all days we are going to do a beer review dedicated to our favorite Goomba buster here on the Nerd Thrillers… I mean… Beer Thrillers. We do love our pop culture and nerd culture and nerdy beer reviews. (As evidenced by the loooooong looooong loooooooooooong list of them, which you’ll find at the end of the article here.) So strap yourselves in, get a big mushroom and grab a nice enjoyable Hefe for this beer review.

Idiom Brewing

I’ve gotten the pleasure of getting to stop at Idiom Brewing a few times now. First time was with my daughters on our Monocacy trip, which you can read about here:

Idiom Brewing is a fantastic little spot along the canal with a great view, great brewery, and wonderful beers.

As per Untappd: Idiom Brewing is a micro brewery located in Frederick Maryland with 247 unique beers and an average Untappd rating of 3.9. (You can currently vote for Idiom Brewing in our March Madness tournament here: The Brock Lesnar Conference – Round 2 Voting.) They have 52, 997 ratings currently (as of 3.10.22). Their Untappd description reads: Idiom Brewing Co. has a simple goal in mind – To bring people from all walks of life together, to enjoy themselves and each other. Whether you’re a hop head looking for explosively juicy IPAs; are one of the adventurous few looking to try boozy, sour or complex flavors; or you’re just looking to enjoy classic styles and seasonal favorites, we’ll have a little something here for you!

You can find their website here: Idiom Brewing.com and their Facebook here: Idiom Brewing on Facebook.

Now that we know who made the beer, let’s get into the beer review.

Beer Review

Level Up by Idiom Brewing

Beer: Level Up
Brewery: Idiom Brewing
Style: Wheat Beer – Hefeweizen
ABV: 5.6%
IBU: 12
Untappd Description: Brewed with 60% white wheat and a touch of honey malt then fermented a touch warmer than typical for the style to balance the ester profile between clove and banana. Super smooth, super creamy with a clean finish and light bitterness.

First, I will acknowledge the picture above wasn’t the best… but it was after a few breweries and while trying to take a picture with my Switch in the background which I only had as the mobile tablet part and not tethered to a TV. So it goes.

(Ya’ll never came here for the pictures anyway right? Just my nice pretty words.)

But, lets start with the look of it. It is a beautiful golden Hefe orange hue. Light yellow percolating with the orange golden vibes you can get from a pretty hefe. It straddles the border of transparent and opaque with a cloudy turbulent look, but with some transparency to it. Some cloud and sediment but nothing on the ‘yeasty everywhere’ side of things.

Smell is a lovely Hefe banana and clove aroma. That distinct appeal of a hefe’s aroma, where you are given the banana, the clove, the smell of yeast, and wheat, almost like bread being baked on a lovely brisk morning.

This is a very smooth wonderful sipping beer. Extremely tasty and easy to drink down with zero problems. You get your distinct flavors and notes that are the typical of Hefeweizens – the banana, the clove, the yeast, the malt, and the wheat; and they are all done so well here and work in such a good unison. Very good mixture, very good compliment to each other. This is a smooth beer, don’t let any of the bottom sediment (which there was a tiny wee bit of) fool you, this isn’t a cloudy hazy monster or anything like that, there’s not tons of floating yeasties or sediment in it. This drinks smooth, it stays smooth after pouring and is settled, and its a good smooth flowing Hefe that we all know and appreciate and like. There is nothing that is going to absolutely blow your mind about this beer – but no Hefe has really ever done that, and thats not really particularly the point of the style. I enjoy Hefes very much and their one of my favorite styles for their sheer normalcy, wheaty taste, their banana and clove mix, the yeast aroma, and how (to me) simple they are. They taste like what beer can and should taste like. Similar to a good lager or pilsner or similar. A good well rounded, well crafted Hefe is phenomenal in its own right, in its simplicity of style and taste and enjoyment. Perfect backporch beginning of summer sippers. And Idiom knocked it out of the park with that and with this beer and nailed all of that for me. This is definitely a level above some other Hefe’s I’ve had. (See what I did there? Eh… ehh…. nudge, nudge?)

My Untappd Rating: ***.75
Global Untappd Rating: 3.81 (as of 3.10.22)

Post Beer Review Wrap-Up

Let’s discuss how often I do pop culture beer reviews and nerd reviews shall we? Haha, I do enjoy them. And actually have quite a few more beers of that vein to do in the near future. (A few Star Wars ones I want to knock out and finish up here on the blog as well.) Also, we are looking to be hitting Brewery Fire in the upcoming days, where we know we’ll be getting some hot nerd beers for the blog too.

But, first, let’s look at all the pop culture beers I’ve covered:
