Thanksgiving at The Beer Thrillers household usually means one thing: yes, the kids are arguing over who gets the wishbone, the pies are cooling on the counter, and the Macy’s parade is droning in the background — but most importantly, a Pennsylvania craft beer is getting cracked and poured into whatever dish I’m cooking. Because if you’re not using local beer in your holiday feast… what are you doing?

This year, we’re going with a full-on PA-powered centerpiece: a Maple–Brown Ale Glazed Turkey, roasted low and slow, basted in a malty, caramel-rich glaze made with one of Pennsylvania’s best fall beers: Troegs’ Troegenator Doppelbock or Victory’s Festbier (both work beautifully and are easy to find statewide). The result is a turkey that’s juicy, glossy, sweet, savory, and unapologetically Pennsylvanian.

Below is the complete recipe, along with a few craft-beer-pairing side suggestions to turn your Thanksgiving table into a full flight of PA brew goodness.

Maple–Brown Ale Glazed Turkey (Made with Pennsylvania Craft Beer)

Beer Recommendation

Pick one of these PA craft beers depending on your flavor goals:

  • Troegs Troegenator Doppelbock – Dark fruit, caramel, toffee; slightly sweet.
Perfect for a deep, rich, almost BBQ-like glaze.

  • Victory Festbier – Clean, bready, slightly sweet malt.
Lighter, more delicate, but still beautifully malty.

  • Weyerbacher Merry Monks – If you want a more Belgian, fruity twist.

For the recipe below, I’ll assume Troegenator, because very little says “Pennsylvania in November” more than that purple-labeled doppelbock.

Ingredients

The Turkey

  • 1 whole turkey (12–16 lbs), thawed

  • 2 tbsp kosher salt

  • 1 tbsp black pepper

  • 1 tbsp smoked paprika

  • 2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp dried thyme

  • 1 tsp dried sage

  • Olive oil or melted butter (2–3 tbsp)

Aromatics (for inside the turkey)

  • 1 orange, quartered

  • 1 small onion, halved

  • 3–4 garlic cloves

  • Fresh rosemary, thyme, and sage

The Beer–Maple Glaze

  • 1 ½ cups Troegenator Doppelbock (or your PA beer of choice)

  • ½ cup pure Pennsylvania maple syrup

  • ¼ cup apple cider

  • 2 tbsp soy sauce

  • 2 tbsp Dijon mustard

  • 1 tbsp brown sugar

  • 3 tbsp butter

  • Pinch of salt & pepper

Instructions

1. Prep the Turkey

  1. Remove giblets and pat the turkey dry.

  2. Mix the salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, thyme, and sage.

  3. Rub the turkey generously with olive oil or butter, then coat with the seasoning blend.

  4. Stuff the cavity with the orange, onion, garlic, and herbs.

  5. Place on a roasting rack in a large pan.

2. Make the Beer Glaze

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine Troegenator, maple syrup, cider, soy sauce, Dijon, and brown sugar.

  2. Bring to a simmer and reduce by roughly one-third (about 15–20 minutes).

  3. Whisk in the butter until glossy.

  4. Remove from heat and set aside — it will thicken slightly as it cools.

This stuff smells like caramelized heaven. Resist the urge to drink it.

3. Roast the Turkey

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F.

  2. Roast the turkey uncovered for 1 hour.

  3. Start basting with the beer glaze every 20–30 minutes.

  4. Continue roasting until the internal temperature hits 165°F in the thickest part of the thigh (usually about 3–3.5 more hours).

  5. If the bird is browning too quickly, tent with foil.

Your kitchen will smell like a brewery decided to host Thanksgiving. This is a good thing.

4. Finish & Rest

When the turkey reaches temp, remove from oven and let it rest 20–30 minutes before carving. Brush once more with warmed glaze for that Instagram-ready shine.

Flavor Notes (Because This Is The Beer Thrillers)

A Troegenator glaze gives you:

  • Deep caramelized sugar from the doppelbock malt

  • Notes of date, fig, and dark fruit

  • Rich mahogany color

  • A slightly sticky, sweet–savory crust

  • Incredible drippings for gravy

If you go with Victory Festbier instead, the turkey comes out lighter and more bready-malt forward — still spectacular, just less intense.

Suggested Pennsylvania Craft Beer Pairings

Serve your turkey with any of these PA craft beer gems:

  • Troegs Blizzard of Hops – juicy, bright, seasonal, balances the turkey’s sweetness

  • Neshaminy Creek Shape of Hops to Come – for hopheads who want bitterness with the rich glaze

  • Rotunda Cran-Gose (Annville) – tart, salty, and the sleeper hit of the meal

  • Imprint’s Schmoojee Cranberry variants – dessert in a glass, but pairs amazingly well

Bonus: “Beer in Every Side” Pairing Ideas

Because why stop at the turkey?

Hop-Infused Mashed Potatoes

Stir ½ cup of slightly warmed Troegs Sunshine Pilsner into your mashed potatoes with butter and cream — it adds a grassy, herbal brightness.

Brown Ale Stuffing

Use Lancaster Brewing’s Winter Warmer or Yards Brawler in your stuffing liquid. Absolute game-changer.

Stout Sweet Potatoes

Glaze roasted sweet potatoes with Yuengling Hershey’s Chocolate Porter (still PA! still craft-adjacent enough!). Chocolate + sweet potato = chef’s kiss. (If you have any left. They stopped making this two years ago. A good new substitute would be Troegs Chocolate Elf.)

Final Thoughts: A Thanksgiving Made the PA Way

If you’re a regular reader of The Beer Thrillers, you know that Pennsylvania isn’t just a craft beer state — it’s the craft beer state. From the giants (Tröegs, Victory, Yuengling) to the small-town killers (Boneshire Brew Workst, Rotunda, YAH Brew, Sworn Brewing, Sterling Pig, Forest & Main), the Commonwealth knows how to brew something for every season.

And Thanksgiving — with all its comfort, nostalgia, chaos, and warmth — is the perfect canvas to show off what Pennsylvania beer can do in the kitchen.

If you end up making this recipe, send pictures or tag us on Instagram/Facebook/Twitter. And let me know which PA beer you picked — I’m always curious what everyone’s pouring and cooking with.

Happy Thanksgiving, and cheers from The Beer Thrillers!

Haunted Hops: Five Pennsylvania Craft Beers to Sip This Halloween https://thebeerthrillers.com/2025/10/31/haunted-hops-five-pennsylvania-craft-beers-to-sip-this-halloween/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=haunted-hops-five-pennsylvania-craft-beers-to-sip-this-halloween Fri, 31 Oct 2025 21:03:36 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=16649 Haunted Hops: Five Pennsylvania Craft Beers to Sip This Halloween

As the leaves fall and the nights grow longer, it’s time to dive into the seasonal brews that bring all the thrills of October to your glass. For fans of craft beer and the spooky season, there’s no better time to explore Pennsylvania’s haunted-hops landscape. Below are five beers brewed by PA breweries that lean into Halloween vibes—names, labels, stories and all.

Pennsylvania Halloween Themed Beers (can art is our creation, for their labels see below)

1. Master of Pumpkins (2025) — Tröegs Independent Brewing (Hershey, PA)

Master of Pumpkins by Troegs Independent Brewing

One of Pennsylvania’s most iconic fall-season beers, Master of Pumpkins returns for 2025 with all its harvest-pumpkin glory. The Hershey-based Tröegs brewers source 3,000 lbs of Pennsylvania-grown longneck pumpkins every year, roast and purée them, then brew a rich, spiced ale that leans deep into autumn.

Abram-style: Sweet caramel malt backbone, pumpkin depth, spices (cinnamon, clove, ginger, nutmeg) and at 7.5 % ABV, hearty enough for a brisk October night.

2. Young Pumpkinstein — Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company (Croydon, PA)

Young Pumpkinstein

A fun twist on the pumpkin-beer tradition: Young Pumpkinstein is described as a Märzen-style lager brewed with allspice, candied ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg, finishing dry yet spiced.
Specs: 5.2 % ABV, 23 IBU.

3. Michael Meyer’s Lemon IPA — Pizza Boy Brewing Co. (Enola, PA)

Pizza Boy’s Michael Myers Lemon IPA

Here’s a wild card on the Halloween list: a lemon-hazy IPA that uses horror theme branding to good effect. According to its description:

“Brewed with predacious amounts of oat and pilsner malt, fresh meyer lemon zest and a maniacal amount of Amarillo, Mosaic and NZ Motueka hops … Notes of supernatural citrus, blood stained everything, sharp knives and inside-out William Shatner masks.”
It clocks in at 6.66 % ABV.

4. Reaper’s Revenge Blood Orange & Pomegranate Ale — Wallenpaupack Brewing Company (PA)

Reaper’s Revenge by Wallenpaupack Brewing

Lending a hint of theatricality, this beer is tied to a haunted‐attraction experience and embraces the spooky side of fall. While I couldn’t find full specs, its marketing says:

“Just in time for the Halloween season … a beer that not only captures the essence of the season but … embodies the thrilling, hair-raising experience.” (via the brewery)
This beer joins the list to highlight a more theatrical style of Halloween craft brew—bold names, fruit twist (blood orange & pomegranate), an event tie-in. Great content for a blog segment like “Not just pumpkin: Halloween beers that think outside the Jack-O-lantern.”

5. Batch No. 666 — Appalachian Brewing Company (Harrisburg area, PA)

Batch 666 by Appalachian Brewing Company

Bringing classic Halloween flair: devilish name, dark-bronze hue, and a clear “in the spirit of Halloween” tagline. The brewery describes it as:

“Produced with 1,666 lbs of malt along with three 6 lb hop additions. The result is a dark bronze colored brew with tons of flavor, and a delightfully clean finish! Be careful, this one can sneak up on you and take you to the dark side. We’re sorry, the devil made us do it!”
Vintage/specs: Strong Ale / American style, 7.7 % ABV.

Fuzzy Few Festival

Previously known as the Fuzzy Few Carnival, this year the Fuzzy Few Organization is renaming and rebranding it as a Festival rather than a carnival.

For the past 56 years it has been the Fuzzy Few Carnival and has happened near or around the middle of August every year. With the Hummelstown Fireman’s Carnival happening in the end of June each year.

Unfortunately, as with most things – COVID – 19 changed a lot of the way events, activities, and things like this work. And with all of that it became harder and harder for the Fuzzy Few Organization (FFO) to be able to secure carnival groups to come help assist their carnival each year. Last year they were unable to have rides and other vendors due to this, but they did procure some inflatable activities and playground stuff for children.

(See last year’s article: Fuzzy Few Organization Presents the Fuzzy Few Festival With Beer Garden 2024.)

So pivoting for 2023 they announced the Fuzzy Few Festival (instead of the Fuzzy Few Carnival).

Now in its second year as the Fuzzy Few Festival, it returns for 2024 from August 12th through August 17th.

It will run from August 11th through August 16th 2025 at Schaffner Park (Boro Park).

Beer Garden

The Beer Garden has moved from the caged in basketball courts to right directly in front of the band stage – and as a bonus – they will allow guests to purchase the alcohol and move about the festival rather than having to stay within the basketball court like last year.

Known beer will be Troegs Independent Brewing (who has graciously donated eight [8] cases of beer to the event) – Perpetual IPA, Sunshine Pilsner, and Graffiti Highway IPA – as well as Blue Moon, Coors Light, and Miller Lite. (More could be announced.) Also on top of beer there is mixed drink, wine, cocktails, and select other beverages.

Pentagon

Unfortunately this year, there will be no Pentagon, as they retired last year after the Fuzzy Few Festival 2024.

Amy and the Alzheimer’s Association

Make sure you stop out to visit Amy at her Alzheimer’s Assocciation stand. (I’ll also be helping out a few nights after work). Raising awareness for Alzheimer’s and for the Alzheimer’s Association.

She will have a stand at the Festival, so you can stop in, talk with her (or us) and hang out, and get information, fliers, pamphlets and information about Alzheimer’s, the Alzheimer’s Association, and their work raising awareness, looking for a cure, charitable work, as well as the upcoming End ALZ Walks.

History of Fuzzy Few Organization

The founding of the Organization, know as the Fuzzy Few, came about during Hummelstown’s 200th Anniversary. It was formed as a Bearded Brothers Club to participate in that celebration. After playing a very active role during the time of fun and merriment, the men in the club decided to apply for an official charter and operate as a non-profit organization in the community of Hummelstown.

The organization’s official emblem was registered and approved on December 29th, 1963. The emblem also indicates the clubs desire to promote goodwill and fellowship not only within the organization but also throughout the community and surrounding areas.

The goal of the organization since its founding has been to establish and support community and youth related programs.

YAH Brew and Cartel Brewing Team Up to Revive Middletown Space with Collaborative Venture https://thebeerthrillers.com/2025/08/07/yah-brew-and-cartel-brewing-team-up-to-revive-middletown-space-with-collaborative-venture/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=yah-brew-and-cartel-brewing-team-up-to-revive-middletown-space-with-collaborative-venture Thu, 07 Aug 2025 21:46:22 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=16550 YAH Brew and Cartel Brewing Team Up to Revive Middletown Space with Collaborative Venture

YAH Brew and Cartel Brewing and Blending have teamed up on the newly acquired space in Middletown – the old Tattered Flag location at 1 S Union St, Middletown, PA 17057. (See our recent article about YAH Brewing acquiring the Tattered Flag space.) (Or the Tower Investments press release on it here – YAH Brew Preser.) Cartel Brewing and Blending has also made expansion growth of their own, by announcing their second locationThe Safe House – coming to Manheim, PA, opening in late Fall / Winter of 2025.

Cartel Brewing and YAH Brew team up over the Tattered Flag location in Middletown

Cartel Brewing and Blending’s Social Media Announcement

The announcement came via Cartel Brewing and Blending’s social media earlier today:

FUN ANNOUNCEMENT:
For the last few months, we’ve been working on a pretty rad joint venture project with our friends at YAH Brew…
We are stoked to announce that we have the keys and begun the next stage of bringing this amazing space back to life in Middletown, PA!
We will launch a multifaceted community space that will allow us to use the brewery for both of our brands as well as our collaborative new brand and taproom. We also plan to create a cooperative production facility for other breweries to share and expand their brewing and canning needs and foresee a distillery brand arising in 2026….
All in all, we can’t be more excited about this project and partnering with Justin and Aimee from YAH Brew. More details to follow in the coming weeks…..

YAH Brew and Cartel Brewing and Blending Team Up

Two of Central PA’s most creative brewing minds are joining forces to breathe new life into a familiar location in Dauphin County — and beer fans have plenty to be excited about.

Back in July, YAH Brew made waves when they announced plans to take over the former home of Tattered Flag Brewery at 1 South Union Street in Middletown, Pennsylvania. The 5,000-square-foot space, which had sat idle since Tattered Flag closed its doors in late 2023 due to rising inflation and labor challenges, is now being transformed into something bold, collaborative, and community-driven.

But the story just got even more interesting.

Earlier today, Cartel Brewing & Blending announced via social media that they’re officially partnering with YAH Brew on the Middletown project — turning the solo endeavor into a full-blown joint venture between two of the region’s most experimental breweries.

“For the last few months, we’ve been working on a pretty rad joint venture project with our friends at YAH Brew,” Cartel wrote in a Facebook post. “We are stoked to announce that we have the keys and begun the next stage of bringing this amazing space back to life in Middletown, PA!”

According to both breweries, the revitalized space will serve multiple purposes: an event venue, a collaborative brewing hub, and a future home for a distilling operation.

What to Expect from the New YAH Brew x Cartel Project

  • Event Venue – The updated venue is designed to host a variety of gatherings, from retirement parties and birthdays to corporate events and wedding receptions. With a large open floor plan and Yah Brew’s nostalgic flair, the space promises a unique, relaxed vibe for private functions.

  • Shared Brewing & Canning Facility – In a move that underscores the cooperative spirit of craft beer, the site will also operate as a production facility for both Yah Brew and Cartel Brewing, helping both brands expand their brewing and canning capabilities.

  • Future Distillery in 2026 – Cartel hinted at an exciting long-term vision: the creation of a new distillery brand housed within the same space. While details are still emerging, this points toward a multi-beverage future for the Middletown location.

A Second Life for a Storied Building

For locals and longtime fans of the Central PA beer scene, the building at 1 S. Union Street holds a lot of history. Once home to Tattered Flag Brewery — a veteran-owned favorite that helped put Middletown on the craft beer map — the space now enters a new era with two ambitious and community-focused breweries at the helm.

This collaboration is more than just a shared address; it’s a symbol of what can happen when independent brewers unite, pool their resources, and think beyond the pint glass.

We’ll be keeping tabs on developments as the project evolves — including grand opening dates, beer releases, and any sneak peeks into the distilling side of things.

Want to Book the Event Space?

Looking to host a wedding reception, retirement party, or company event in a unique beer-forward setting? Yah Brew and Cartel are already taking reservations for the event space. Stay tuned for updates via their social media channels or visit their websites directly.

July 17, 2025

By NAI CIR Press Release – Emma Weikel 717-761-5070 ext 117 eweikel@naicir.com

Middletown, PA – YAH Brew, a bold and fast-growing female-owned brewery based in Hummelstown, has leased the ground-floor space of the former Tattered Flag Brewery & Distillery in Middletown. Known for its pop culture-inspired beer releases, bold styles, and inclusive community spirit, YAH Brew will use the space to expand production capabilities and support growing demand.

This new location complements the brewery’s existing operations, which include a taproom in downtown Hershey, and brewery/taproom and hoagie shop in Mount Joy. The Middletown expansion marks a major milestone in the brand’s continued growth—reviving a well-known local craft beer destination.

Nik Sgagias, of NAI CIR, represented the landlord in the transaction.

The second floor of the building features a 5,000 SF, fully equipped restaurant space that remains available for lease—offering a rare opportunity for a food and beverage operator to join the heart of Middletown’s evolving culinary and craft beverage scene. Seven Harrisburg – Hershey Area Breweries Come Together to Bring Back the 717 Collaboration Beer https://thebeerthrillers.com/2025/07/16/seven-harrisburg-hershey-area-breweries-come-together-to-bring-back-the-717-collaboration-beer/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=seven-harrisburg-hershey-area-breweries-come-together-to-bring-back-the-717-collaboration-beer Wed, 16 Jul 2025 23:36:09 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=16513 Seven Harrisburg – Hershey Area Breweries Come Together to Bring Back the 717 Collaboration Beer

(The following is a press release.)

Tröegs Independent Brewing announces the return of 717 Collaboration Beer, a joint endeavor among the Hershey-based brewery and six other popular local breweries.

717 Collaboration Team Up Photo (showcasing all of the people who worked on the 717 beer) (photo courtesy of Troegs Independent Brewing)

A collaborative effort between Appalachian Brewing, Boneshire Brew Works, Ever Grain Brewing, Pizza Boy Brewing, Wolf Brewing, Zeroday Brewing, and Troegs Independent Brewing, the beer serves as a reminder of the camaraderie that exists among breweries thanks to the thriving craft beer industry in Central Pennsylvania.

Some of the brightest ideas have been developed among sharing stories and laughs with friends over beer. Whether we’re Central PA natives or transplants, we’ve all come together in the 717 with one common goal – to brew great beer and cultivate great friendships.

– John Trogner, Co-founder of Troegs Independent Brewing, and head brewmaster for the 29 year old Central PA brewery – which opened in Harrisburg and then later moved to Hershey

The Resurrection of the 717 Collaboration Beer

As you can see from the team up photo above, the beer was created by Troegs Brewing, Appalachian Brewing, Boneshire Brew Works, Ever Grain Brewing, Pizza  Boy Brewing, Wolf Brewing, ZeroDay Brewing, and YAH Brew, created at the ZeroDay Brewing facility. Also in the picture includes various people from other breweries like Hemauer Brewing, YAH Brew, and helpers such as the Harris Family brewers, and more.

The 717 Collaboration label (photo courtesy of Troegs Independent Brewing, as seen on Untappd and the various websites and social medias of the breweries involved)

Brewed at Zeroday’s brewing facility in Harrisburg, the West Coast-style Pilsner weighs in at 6.3% ABV and highlights Mosaic, Nelson Sauvin, and Solero hops. The beer combines the light, malty and crisp attributes of a pilsner with the hop-forward aroma and dry bitterness of a West Coast-style IPA.

Collaboration brews are always fun. When you put seven breweries in the same place to come up with a recipe, you’re going to generate awesome conversation and ultimately come up with a great beer. It’s proof that beer brings people together, and this collaboration is a reminder of that spirit.

-Hannah Ison, Director of Brewing Operations at Zeroday

YAH Brew to Turn the Old Tattered Flag Location Into an Event Space https://thebeerthrillers.com/2025/07/15/yah-brew-to-turn-the-old-tattered-flag-location-into-an-event-space/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=yah-brew-to-turn-the-old-tattered-flag-location-into-an-event-space Wed, 16 Jul 2025 00:20:35 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=16500 YAH Brew to Turn the Old Tattered Flag Location Into an Event Space

While their announcement via YAH Brew Hershey’s social media seems cryptic about its location, astute patrons of both YAH Brew and Tattered Flag can immediately see that this is no mere “Middletown location”. It can be only one location and one play… the old Tattered Flag location. Amy and I were sitting at Boneshire Brew Works, enjoying a Que Sera and the Baron Margarita Gose while eating our favorite Bacon and Thyme pizza when we saw the YAH Brew post – just one minute old, and we immediately recognized the location. On the same day where we announced Appalachian Brewing Company closing their Harrisburg brewpub, a craft beer staple in Pennsylvania, it looks like YAH Brew is tapping into nostalgia and craft beer history and reclaiming an old craft beer hangout and mainstay for the Central PA area and bringing it back. Dipping into their own nostalgia to do so, what perfect news on this day! It was late October last year (2024) when we announced that Tower Investments bought the Tattered Flag location, you can read about that here: Tattered Flag Brewery & Still Works Sold to California-Based Tower Investments.

YAH Brew looks to be taking over the old Tattered Flag Middletown brewery location.

The Announcement

The following is the announcement just posted about an hour ago on YAH Brew Hershey’s Facebook page:

Welp…here we go again!
Throughout the year we receive many inquires about hosting private events in our taprooms. As much as we love and appreciate hearing that y’all want to celebrate and create cherished memories in our space, we often cannot accommodate the group sizes or fulfill requests for busy weekend days due to our limited capacity.
We have secured an event space in Middletown that can handle just about anything you could throw at it! Our 5000sqft space welcomes large group events or we can split the space down to fit smaller groups while still providing a top notch experience.
We know this post is going to generate gobs of questions and speculation, at this time we wish to only promote our new event space. You’ll have to wait to hear about any other details, but they will be coming and they are more exciting than you may imagine….
If you are interested in booking your next retirement party, wake, reception, holiday party, or corporate event with us, please contact us through our private event booking page at https://www.yahbrewco.com/taproom-2
While the post is cryptic, like I said above, it is pretty obvious that this is the above bar area of the Tattered Flag brewery location in Middletown, PA. YAH Brew took over the Tattered Flag location in Hershey in 2023; the original Hershey Biergarten that later became the Tattered Flag ‘events’ location and taproom. (YAH Brew to Open in Spring 2023.)
Head brewer for YAH Brew, and husband of the owner, is Justin Hoak who previously was the head brewer of Tattered Flag, leaving to start their own brewery with his wife (owner) Aimee Hoak, shortly before Tattered Flag ended up closing. So it feels like a bit of cyclical loop now with YAH Brew taking over the old Tattered Flag brewery location. Obviously not a whole lot is known, and a lot of information will come out soon, as their post states, their is a lot of speculation about what this new venue will mean for them. This is also their third location in three years. (They also opened their Mount Joy taproom and Hulk’s Hoagies.)
This is definitely a huge step for the YAH Brew brand. While information is short right now, it will be very interesting to see what they make of the 5200 square foot location. Not much is known at this point, also given how California based company – Tower Investments was the previous owner of the location (though they were looking to sell it).  But be sure to stay tuned here as we will bring you all the information we know as soon as it becomes available!

Tröegs Unleashes the Return of Nimble Giant Double IPA

Tröegs Independent Brewing has officially brought back one of its most sought-after seasonal beers — the bold and juicy Nimble Giant Double IPA.

Brewed just once a year, Nimble Giant is a fan favorite that rivals Tröegs’ iconic Mad Elf in the hype it builds leading up to its release. This limited-release Double IPA is now hitting shelves and draft lines across the brewery’s distribution network.

The beer’s journey began in the experimental Scratch Series, where Tröegs brewers first explored the layered complexity of Mosaic hops. It was during these small-batch tests that the ideal hop trio took shape.

“We loved our earliest trials with Mosaic,” says John Trogner, Tröegs brewmaster and co-founding brother. “But when we started dry-hopping with Mosaic and Simcoe together, we knew we had something special. Once we brought Azacca into the mix, it clicked — and we couldn’t turn back.” Weighing in at 9% ABV, Nimble Giant is a showcase of hop expression and balance. Expect vibrant notes of tropical fruit, pine resin, and honeysuckle, all built on a smooth base of pilsner and Vienna malts that give the beer its rich amber-orange color and silky body.

With an “Outstanding” rating on BeerAdvocate and regular top-10 appearances on Untappd’s trending list, Nimble Giant continues to impress both critics and hopheads alike.

This annual release is now available in 16-ounce cans and on draft wherever Tröegs beer is sold. Nimble Giant is available on draft and in 16-oz. cans across the brewery’s entire distribution footprint. To track down Nimble Giant near you, visit the Tröegs Brew Finder.

For More Information on Troegs Independent Craft Brewing

According to Untappd, Troegs Independent Craft Brewing is a regional brewery with 164 unique beers listed (despite their being over 500 Scratches). (A lot of vintage and variants get consolidated into single unique listings as well.) They have 2.4 Million ratings and a global average rating of 3.79 (as of 6.1.25). Their Untappd bio reads:

Founded in Pennsylvania in 1997 by brothers John and Chris Trogner, Tröegs Independent Brewing is driven by a sense of adventure and curiosity. Our brewery has been built by family, friends and kindred spirits who share a love of great beer. Together, we all make Tröegs. You might know our Perpetual IPA, the best-selling IPA in Pennsylvania. Or the dark, malty and crisp Troegenator. You may have come across such iconic beers as Nugget Nectar or Mad Elf in your beer travels. Perhaps you’ve been lucky enough to try one or two of the hundreds of experimental Scratch Series beers we’ve brewed over the years. Whether you’re already a member of our extended family or you’re just getting to know our brewery, there’s always something new to discover with Tröegs.

Rails & Ales: Brewery Train Adventures Near Harrisburg and Hershey https://thebeerthrillers.com/2025/04/02/rails-ales-brewery-train-adventures-near-harrisburg-and-hershey/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=rails-ales-brewery-train-adventures-near-harrisburg-and-hershey Thu, 03 Apr 2025 01:42:28 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=16732 Rails & Ales: Brewery Train Adventures Near Harrisburg and Hershey

Craft beer and railroads share an unlikely bond: both were born from industrial grit, designed to bring people together, and perfected by those obsessed with precision. For beer lovers in the Harrisburg–Hershey region, that connection is no longer just metaphorical. Within a few hours of Central Pennsylvania, several historic railroads and scenic train lines now offer beer-focused excursions or sit within easy reach of excellent breweries.

If you’ve ever wanted to swap a brewery crawl for a train whistle and a pint, here’s your guide.

Rails and Ales – A Great Way to Travel and See New Breweries

New Hope Railroad’s “Brew Hope Express” (New Hope, PA)

About two hours from Hershey, the New Hope Railroad offers one of the most beer-centric rail experiences in Pennsylvania: the Brew Hope Express. This vintage excursion pairs a nostalgic train ride through Bucks County with onboard beer tastings and light charcuterie.

Expect scenic countryside views, smooth pours of rotating craft beers, and a relaxed, almost European beer-train atmosphere. It’s ideal for a low-stress day trip — short, focused, and built specifically for craft beer fans.

Why it works from Central PA:
It’s a straightforward drive and one of the most polished “beer train” experiences in the state.

Stourbridge Line + Runaway Train Brewery (Honesdale, PA)

If you want something more immersive, head northeast to Honesdale, where the Stourbridge Line teams up with Runaway Train Brewery for a full rail-and-brewery adventure.

This experience typically includes:

  • A scenic vintage train ride along the Lackawaxen River

  • Beer samples served onboard

  • A guided brewery tour once you return to town

  • A sit-down meal at the brewery

This feels less like a novelty and more like a craft beer event built around history, scenery, and production. It’s also one of the most complete “rail + beer” combinations within reach of Hershey.

East Broad Top Railroad’s “Broad Top Brews” (Central PA)

The most “local pride” option for Central PA drinkers is the East Broad Top Railroad near Rockhill Furnace. This narrow-gauge historic railroad runs a special Broad Top Brews train that turns a heritage steam-era ride into a rolling beer festival.

You’ll sample beers from regional breweries, ride through wooded ridges and farmland, and return to a festival-style environment with live music and food vendors.

For residents of Harrisburg and Hershey, this feels like a home-region event rather than a long-distance destination.

How to Build Your Own “Rail & Ale” Weekend from Central PA

Even without official beer trains, you can easily create your own brewery-and-rail adventure using commuter or regional rail lines.

From the Harrisburg–Hershey area, a good strategy is:

Drive to a station → Ride a scenic or regional train → Walk or rideshare to a brewery → Repeat.

Philadelphia and its suburbs are especially rich with breweries within short distances of stations. You can turn a simple regional rail trip into a personalized brewery crawl without worrying about city parking or long drives between stops.

Why This Works So Well for Central PA Beer Fans

The Harrisburg–Hershey area sits in an underrated sweet spot:

You’re close to:

  • Historic narrow-gauge railroads

  • Scenic mountain lines

  • Multiple day-trip brewery towns

  • And a surprising number of rail-based beer events

You don’t need to fly. You don’t need a big budget. You just need a free Saturday, an appreciation for good malt, and a willingness to let someone else drive the train.

Final Pour: Are Beer Trains Worth It?

If your idea of a perfect beer experience includes:

  • Real pints instead of sample-fest chaos

  • A slow pace

  • Scenic views

  • And actual conversation without brewery-crawl exhaustion…

Then brewery trains might be one of the most underrated beer experiences in the Mid-Atlantic.

For Harrisburg and Hershey drinkers, they’re not just accessible — they’re practically in your backyard.
