(Please note this is a guest post written by carolinahempcafe.com with the Aperture Team. All information herein is provided by them.)

Walk into your local brewery and take a deep whiff – there’s a good chance that the citrusy haze, piney punch, or dank earthiness in the air doesn’t just come from hops.

Terpenes, the aromatic compounds responsible for the flavor and scent of both craft beer and cannabis, are the shared language of these two indulgences.

Whether you’re a hop head or a seasoned toker, understanding terpenes can reveal a vibrant intersection where the two meet.

Cannabis and Hop plant leaves

What Are Terpenes?

Terpenes are naturally occurring aromatic compounds found in many plants, but they’re especially concentrated in cannabis and hops, two close botanical cousins. These compounds give plants their distinct smells and contribute to their effects.

Linalool, for instance, lends lavender its calming scent. Pinene gives pine trees – and certain cannabis strains and hops – their sharp, woodsy aroma.

In cannabis, terpenes don’t just shape aroma and taste. They interact with cannabinoids like THC and CBD to produce what’s called the entourage effect, a phenomenon where compounds work synergistically to create a more balanced and beneficial overall experience.

Similarly, in beer, terpenes from hops influence not only aroma and taste, but also mouthfeel and even perceived bitterness.

The Cannabis–Craft Beer Connection

Hops (humulus lupulus) and cannabis (cannabis sativa) both belong to the Cannabaceae family, which explains their overlapping terpene profiles. In fact, some of the most prized hop varieties used in IPAs, such as Citra, Mosaic, and Simcoe, are rich in the same terpenes found in top-shelf cannabis strains.

Here are a few examples of shared terpenes:

  • Myrcene: Found in both mangoes and cannabis, it gives a musky, herbal aroma. In beer, it contributes to earthy, slightly fruity notes.
  • Limonene: Bright and citrusy. In cannabis, it often appears in sativa strains and imparts uplifting effects. In beer, it sharpens up hazy IPAs and sour ales.
  • Caryophyllene: Spicy and peppery. This terpene binds to CB2 receptors in the body, giving it anti-inflammatory potential. In beer, it shows up in saisons and darker ales.
  • Pinene: As the name suggests, it smells like pine needles and is prominent in West Coast IPAs and strains like Jack Herer.

Terpene-Driven Pairings: Beer and Bud

Pairing cannabis and beer isn’t just about chasing a high or a buzz.

It’s about layering flavors, aromas, and even effects to create a fuller, more flavorful sensory experience.

Think of it like pairing wine with cheese or coffee with dessert – if you get it right, both elevate each other.

1. Citrusy IPA + Limonene-Dominant Pre-Roll

Try pairing a hazy, citrus-heavy IPA (like a New England-style IPA with Citra or Amarillo hops) with a limonene-rich strain such as Super Lemon Haze or Tangie. The citrusy zing of both the beer and bud harmonize beautifully, offering an uplifting, energetic vibe.

Try a THCA pre-roll with a citrus-forward profile from Carolina Hemp Cafe for the ultimate sunny afternoon combo.

2. Dank Double IPA + Myrcene Bomb

If you enjoy heavy-hitting flavor, a West Coast double IPA with notes of resin, pine, and funk will go hand-in-hand with a strong indica featuring high myrcene levels. These combos can be sedating, perfect for winding down in the evening.

3. Spiced Saison + Caryophyllene-Packed Bud

Saisons often feature spice and peppery notes, which match beautifully with cannabis strains rich in caryophyllene. This pairing has a culinary edge – think black pepper, cloves, and roasted herbs. Great for an early evening tasting session or pairing with grilled food.

4. Sour Ale + Floral or Herbal Strain

Sour beers, especially fruited sours and goses, work well with lighter, more floral cannabis strains that won’t overwhelm the delicate tartness. Look for strains like Lavender or Jack Herer and a gose brewed with fruit like passionfruit or hibiscus.

Tips for Enjoying Both Responsibly

Cannabis and alcohol both influence your central nervous system, so combining them requires some thought and moderation. Here’s how to do it properly:

  • Start Low and Go Slow: Begin with low-ABV beers and lower-potency cannabis (like THCA flower or THCA pre-rolls). Ease your way in to appreciate the experience, not just the effect.
  • Time Your Consumption: Consider spacing them out – smoke or vape first, then sip your beer. You’ll have a better sense of how each is affecting you.
  • Eat Something: Pairings don’t have to stop at beer and bud. Add food – like a savory charcuterie board, a salty pretzel, or sweet dark chocolate – to anchor the flavors and keep your head clear.
  • Stay Hydrated: Cannabis can dry your mouth. Alcohol dehydrates you. Water should be your best friend during any session.
  • Know the Law: Public consumption of cannabis is still illegal in most areas. Always check local regulations before lighting up.

Terpene Tourism: The Future of Beer and Bud Culture

As legalization spreads and craft culture continues to explode, we’re seeing a rise in “terpene tourism.” Think cannabis and beer tasting events, aroma workshops, and hybrid venues offering both in a curated environment. Some dispensaries even label terpene profiles as clearly as breweries label IBU and hop varieties.

This is especially true in states like California, Oregon, and Colorado where the craft beer and cannabis industries coexist legally. Brands are already collaborating, using hemp-derived terpenes to flavor non-alcoholic beers and creating co-branded experiences for educated consumers.

And on the East Coast, brands like Carolina Hemp Cafe are starting to bring that same elevated culture to the South. Whether you’re looking for an infused drink, a terpene-rich pre-roll, or just some solid education, they’re helping redefine what it means to enjoy hemp.

Wrapping It Up

Terpenes are the bridge between cannabis and craft beer – a shared aromatic language that invites us to explore deeper, more meaningful flavor experiences.

Whether you’re pairing a piney IPA with a rich THCA flower strain or just enjoying a lemony sativa on a hot day with a citrus lager, the goal is the same: to slow down, tune in, and taste every note.

So next time you’re cracking open a cold one, consider rolling something up to match. The world of aroma and flavor is bigger (and more fun!) when you let both plants speak.

Hemp and Beer: Is it a Good Combination? https://thebeerthrillers.com/2024/02/12/hemp-and-beer-is-it-a-good-combination/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=hemp-and-beer-is-it-a-good-combination Mon, 12 Feb 2024 21:45:26 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=14481 Hemp and Beer: Is it a Good Combination?

Is Hemp and Beer a good combination?

The craft beer industry is no stranger to innovation, constantly exploring new flavors, ingredients, and brewing techniques. Among the latest trends to capture the imagination of brewers and consumers alike is the infusion of hemp into beer.

This trend marries the ancient, versatile plant of hemp with the age-old craft of brewing, but it raises questions about legality, flavor, and health impacts.

Hemp, a variety of the Cannabis sativa plant species, is grown specifically for industrial uses of its derived products. Unlike its cousin marijuana, hemp contains lower levels of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the compound responsible for the psychoactive effects of cannabis.

The legal landscape for hemp and its derivatives has evolved significantly, making hemp-infused beers more accessible and popular.

There are multiple CBD products that are popular nowadays like CBD Vape Juice at CBD.co. With its popularity, people remain curious to learn more about hemp day by day. And hence, today we will be discussing all the hemp and beer combinations.

(See our article: Hemp and Beer: Happy 4:20 Day)

Historical Context

Historically, hemp was a common crop that found its way into various products, including beverages. Its prohibition, alongside cannabis, had a stifling effect on its use in industries, including brewing.

However, recent legislative changes, notably the 2018 Farm Bill in the United States, have distinguished hemp from marijuana by its THC content and legalized its cultivation. This has paved the way for a resurgence of hemp-infused beers, allowing brewers to revisit and innovate upon historical brewing practices.

The Brewing Process with Hemp

Brewing beer is an art and science that involves malting, mashing, boiling, fermenting, conditioning, and packaging. Hemp can be incorporated into this process in various forms, such as hemp seeds, oils, or CBD (cannabidiol) infusions. Hemp seeds can add a nutty flavor and are often used in the mashing process.

Hemp oils or CBD extracts are typically added later, either during boiling or fermenting, to infuse the beer with hemp’s aromatic and potential health properties. However, brewing with hemp presents challenges, including balancing flavors and navigating the legalities of CBD content.

Flavor and Aroma Contributions

Hemp contributes unique flavor and aroma profiles to beer, primarily through its terpenes, the aromatic compounds also found in hops. The flavors can range from earthy and herbal to nutty, depending on the part of the hemp plant used and the strain of hemp.

This versatility allows for a wide range of beer styles, from IPAs to stouts, to be infused with hemp. A comparative analysis with traditional beer flavors reveals that hemp can complement the bitterness of hops, add complexity, and introduce new flavor notes that are not achievable with hops alone.

Health and Wellness Perspective

The health and wellness trend has significantly influenced consumer preferences, with many seeking products that offer benefits beyond basic nutrition. Hemp-infused beer is perceived to offer such benefits, including stress relief and anti-inflammatory properties, without the psychoactive effects associated with THC.

This has made hemp beers particularly appealing to health-conscious consumers. However, it’s important to note that the health impacts of hemp-infused beers are still under research, and their benefits can vary.

Legal and Regulatory Considerations

The legal status of hemp-infused beers varies by jurisdiction, largely depending on the local laws surrounding hemp and CBD. In regions where hemp cultivation and CBD are legal, brewers still face regulatory challenges, particularly regarding the marketing and distribution of hemp-infused beers.

The FDA and other regulatory bodies have yet to fully clarify the regulations surrounding CBD-infused beverages, leading to a landscape of uncertainty. Brewers must navigate these legal complexities while ensuring their products meet all applicable standards and regulations.

Market Trends and Consumer Reception

The craft beer industry is witnessing a significant shift with the introduction of hemp-infused beers, aligning with consumers’ growing interest in cannabis-related products and natural ingredients.

The market for hemp beer is expanding, driven by a curiosity for its unique flavor profiles and perceived health benefits. Consumer reception has been largely positive, with many enthusiasts eager to explore these new offerings. This enthusiasm is reflected in the increasing number of breweries experimenting with hemp, indicating a robust demand for hemp-infused beer products.

Successful hemp beer brands have leveraged this trend by adopting innovative marketing strategies that highlight the unique aspects of their products, such as sustainability, wellness benefits, and the distinct flavors imparted by hemp. These brands often share their journey of hemp beer creation, emphasizing the quality of ingredients and the brewing process, which resonates well with consumers seeking authentic and transparent products.

Environmental Impact

Hemp cultivation presents a lower environmental footprint compared to traditional beer ingredients like barley and hops, primarily due to hemp’s minimal requirements for water, pesticides, and herbicides.

Hemp’s rapid growth rate and ability to thrive in diverse climates make it a sustainable choice for brewing, contributing to the reduction of the brewing industry’s overall environmental impact.

The sustainability benefits of using hemp extend beyond cultivation. Hemp’s versatility allows for its by-products to be used in creating eco-friendly packaging materials, further aligning hemp-infused beers with eco-conscious consumer trends.

This synergy between hemp-infused beer products and environmental sustainability is attracting consumers who prioritize eco-friendly practices, making hemp beers not just a choice of flavor but also of principle.

Future Outlook

The future of hemp in the brewing industry looks promising, with potential growth and innovation on the horizon. As legal barriers continue to diminish, and consumer interest grows, the market for hemp-infused beers is expected to expand, paving the way for new varieties and brewing techniques. Innovations may include the development of new hemp strains specifically bred for brewing, offering a broader range of flavors and aromas.

Additionally, advancements in extraction and infusion methods could enhance the efficiency and consistency of hemp flavors in beer, further elevating the consumer experience.

Legal changes, particularly those clarifying the regulations around CBD and hemp use in consumables, will significantly impact the production and consumption of hemp beer.

A clearer legal framework could encourage more breweries to explore hemp infusions, leading to greater diversity in the market. Moreover, as research into hemp’s health benefits continues to evolve, we may see hemp-infused beers being marketed more explicitly for their wellness properties, aligning with the broader trend of health-focused beverages.

Conclusion

In conclusion, hemp-infused beers are carving out a niche within the craft beer industry, buoyed by positive consumer reception, environmental benefits, and the potential for future innovation. As the legal landscape becomes more favorable, and consumer preferences continue to evolve, hemp beer is poised to become a staple for those seeking a unique, sustainable, and potentially health-conscious option in their beer selection.

SweetWater Brewing Released Half – A – Gummie IPA https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/11/17/sweetwater-brewing-released-half-a-gummie-ipa/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=sweetwater-brewing-released-half-a-gummie-ipa Fri, 17 Nov 2023 18:08:31 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=13143 SweetWater Brewing Company Announces Release of Half-a-Gummie IPA

SweetWater Brewing Company – the largest craft brewery in the South East (of America); and a subsidiary of Tilray Brands Inc. has announced that they will be releasing ‘Half – A – Gummie IPA’.

SweetWater Brewing Company announced today the latest innovation in its acclaimed IPA series – ‘Half -A – Gummie’ IPA. This new line of India Pale Ales, bursting with fruit-forward flavors, is a twist on the wildly successful SweetWater Gummies Double IPA – which launched earlier this year, now reimagined with a more session-friendly alcohol content. The original Gummies IIPA is available in cans nationwide while the innovative Half-A-Gummie IPA is going to be ready on draft.

SweetWater Brewing is known for their hemp inspired beers, such as Hemperor and many others.

The press release can be found here: SweetWater Brewing Announces Gummies Beer.
(Note, I prefer to write my own articles rather than just copy and paste press releases like some craft beer blogs do.)

SweetWater Brewing Gummies

In the mindset of edibles (gummies) SweetWater Brewing has created a line of Gummies IPAs. Building on their reputation of pot and marijuana and weed themed beers, SweetWater has an ‘edibles’ series called Gummies.

Building on the trailblazing success of the Gummies line, ‘Half-A-Gummie’ IPA emerges as a natural evolution in SweetWater’s pursuit of innovation and excellence in craft brewing. The SweetWater Gummies series launched as a testament to the brewery’s commitment to flavor-forward and high-ABV ales, setting a new benchmark in the Double IPA category. These ales, notably the Tropical IIPA and Fruit Punch IIPA with a potent 9.5% ABV, captured the essence of summer with their haze, juiciness, and bold, fruity flavors.

SweetWater Brewing Company

Half – a – Gummie retains the essence of the full Gummies series, but comes in at lower ABVs. They are keeping that great flavor, the tropical notes, the captivating fruit flavors, the aromatic appeal; just lowering the alcohol. Which is a trend in the craft beer industry. Lower ABVs, lower alcohol, more easy drinking beers. The launch series of Half a Gummie includes the same two great varieties from the original series: Tropical IPA and Fruit Punch IPA. Each are clocking in at 5.5% ABV. These new brews are a masterful blend of fruit explosions, featuring the luscious flavors of strawberry, pineapple, orange, and cherry, culminating in a uniquely smooth, incredibly flavorful, and drinkable IPA experience.

Our Gummies Double IPA has been a huge hit with consumers who crave fruit-forward, high-ABV beers. We’ve also discovered a strong demand, especially with our on-premise partners, for beers with a similar flavor profile and less alcohol. We’re excited to offer drinkers the choice to enjoy an easy-drinking IPA with low bitterness and delicious fruit flavors while tapping into a lower ABV option.

Ty Gilmore, President of U.S. Beers for Tilray Beer

This new line is a testament to SweetWater Brewing Company’s agility in adapting to consumer preferences, offering a lower – ABV IPA that still embodies the brewery’s signature blend of bold flavors and easy drinkability. This strategic move aligns with a market report predicting a 6 percent CAGR growth in the fruit beer market over the next decade, driven by a growing preference for beers that offer both refreshing taste and a gentler alcohol presence, much like ‘Half – A – Gummie’.

Find A SweetWater

SweetWater Brewing Company has their own “Find a Beer” (similar to several breweries we cover, like Troegs Independent Brewing’s Find a Troegs), called “Find a SweetWater”. You can use their website here: “Find a SweetWater” to locate the new Half – A – Gummie IPA series.

Hemp and Beer – Happy 4:20 Day https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/04/20/hemp-and-beer-happy-420-day/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=hemp-and-beer-happy-420-day Thu, 20 Apr 2023 20:20:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=11096 Happy 4:20 Day

Happy 4:20 Day everyone! And what a better way then to sling back some hemp infused beers on a beautiful day like today! So sit out on your patio, light one up, crack open a hemp beer, and enjoy this 75 degree weather!

But first… let’s learn about hemp and beer.

Hemp Beer: A Refreshing and Nutritious Twist on Traditional Brews

Happy 4:20 Day!

Beer has been a beloved beverage for centuries, but what if we told you that there’s a new twist on this classic drink that can take your taste buds to new heights? Enter hemp beer – a refreshing and nutritious option that’s quickly gaining popularity among beer enthusiasts.

Hemp beer is made by adding hemp seeds, hemp oil, or hemp extract to traditional beer recipes. While this may sound like a new concept, hemp has been used to brew beer for centuries, with evidence dating back to ancient China and India. In fact, some sources suggest that the original recipe for Budweiser included hemp in its list of ingredients!

So, what makes hemp beer so special? For starters, hemp seeds are a nutritional powerhouse, packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats. They also contain all nine essential amino acids, making them a complete protein source. When added to beer, hemp seeds can enhance its nutritional profile and provide a unique nutty flavor that’s sure to satisfy.

In addition to its nutritional benefits, hemp beer is also eco-friendly. Hemp is a sustainable crop that requires minimal water and pesticides to grow, making it a more environmentally responsible choice than traditional beer ingredients like barley and hops.

But let’s not forget about the taste – after all, that’s what matters most when it comes to beer! Hemp beer comes in a variety of flavors, from light and refreshing to dark and full-bodied. Some popular options include hemp ale, hemp lager, and hemp stout. Many breweries are also experimenting with different flavor combinations, such as hemp and citrus or hemp and chocolate, to create truly unique brews.

Of course, no discussion of hemp beer would be complete without addressing the elephant in the room – is it legal? The short answer is yes – as long as the beer contains less than 0.3% THC (the psychoactive compound in marijuana), it’s legal under federal law. However, it’s important to note that laws regarding hemp and CBD products can vary by state, so be sure to check your local regulations before indulging.

So, whether you’re a beer enthusiast looking to try something new or just someone who wants to explore the world of hemp-based products, hemp beer is definitely worth a try. With its unique flavor, nutritional benefits, and eco-friendly production methods, it’s no wonder this refreshing twist on traditional brews is quickly gaining popularity. Cheers to hemp beer!

Craft Beer Meets Hemp: Exploring the Benefits of This Exciting New Trend

Hemp and Beer

When it comes to craft beer, brewers are always on the lookout for new and exciting ingredients to add to their recipes. One trend that’s been gaining traction in recent years is the use of hemp – a versatile plant that’s been used for everything from clothing to food to medicine for centuries. But what exactly is hemp beer, and what makes it so special?

First things first: hemp is not the same thing as marijuana. While both plants come from the cannabis family, they have different chemical profiles and are used for different purposes. Hemp contains very low levels of THC (the psychoactive compound that gives marijuana its “high”), but it’s rich in other beneficial compounds like CBD, terpenes, and flavonoids.

When it comes to beer, hemp can be added in a variety of forms – from hemp seeds and hemp oil to CBD-infused hops and hemp extract. Depending on the recipe, hemp can add a range of flavors and aromas to the beer, from nutty and earthy to fruity and floral.

But what are the benefits of adding hemp to beer, beyond just the novelty factor? For one thing, hemp is a nutritional powerhouse. It’s packed with essential vitamins and minerals, including iron, magnesium, and zinc, and it’s a great source of protein and healthy fats. When added to beer, hemp can enhance its nutritional profile and add a unique depth of flavor.

Hemp is also a sustainable crop that’s relatively easy to grow, making it an environmentally-friendly choice for beer makers. Compared to traditional beer ingredients like barley and hops, hemp requires less water and fewer pesticides, making it a more eco-conscious option.

Another benefit of using hemp in beer is its potential health benefits. While research on the effects of CBD and other hemp-derived compounds is still in its early stages, some studies suggest that they may have anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and neuroprotective properties. Of course, it’s important to note that these benefits are not yet fully understood, and more research is needed to determine their efficacy.

So, what does hemp beer actually taste like? The answer, of course, depends on the recipe and the brewer’s techniques. Some hemp beers have a nutty, earthy flavor that’s reminiscent of hemp seeds, while others have a more fruity or floral profile. Some breweries are even experimenting with adding other ingredients, like fruit or chocolate, to create truly unique flavor combinations.

If you’re curious about trying hemp beer for yourself, there are plenty of options out there to choose from. Some popular brands include New Belgium’s “The Hemperor,” which uses hemp hearts and CBD extract to create a hoppy, earthy IPA, and SweetWater’s “420 Strain G13,” which features hemp seeds and terpenes to create a dank, skunky flavor.

In conclusion, the trend of adding hemp to beer is an exciting one, with plenty of potential benefits for both brewers and drinkers. Whether you’re a seasoned craft beer enthusiast or just looking to try something new, hemp beer is definitely worth a taste. So why not raise a glass to this innovative new trend and see where it takes us next?
