As we gather around our tables this Thanksgiving, raising glasses filled with craft beer, wine, or cider, it’s natural to wonder: what did the Pilgrims drink at the first Thanksgiving? The answer might surprise you, and it’s not as straightforward as you might think.

The First Thanksgiving Dinner and Drinks (photo courtesy of the Smithsonian Magazine)

The Myth of the Pilgrim’s Beer

Contrary to popular belief, the Pilgrims likely didn’t have beer at the first Thanksgiving in 1621. This misconception stems from clever marketing campaigns by beer companies in the early 20th century, particularly after the repeal of Prohibition. The United States Brewers Association even claimed, “It was beer, not turkey, that lured the Pilgrims to Plymouth Rock” – a statement that’s more fiction than fact.

What They Actually Drank

The Pilgrims and Their Drinks

Water: The Simple Staple

Believe it or not, water was likely the primary beverage at the first Thanksgiving. The Plymouth area had abundant clean water from freshwater streams and springs, making it a reliable and safe option for the Pilgrims.

Hard Cider: A Possible Treat

While not certain, there’s a chance that hard cider made an appearance at the feast. The Pilgrims were familiar with cider from England, and they may have used wild apples found in the New World to ferment a small batch.

Why No Beer?

Several factors contributed to the absence of beer at the first Thanksgiving:

  1. Lack of Ingredients: The Pilgrims hadn’t yet established crops for brewing, particularly barley.
  2. Time Constraints: Brewing takes time, and survival was the priority in those early days.
  3. No Brewery: The first recorded brewery license in Massachusetts wasn’t issued until 1637, a full 16 years after the first Thanksgiving.

The Real Story Behind the Pilgrims and Beer

While beer wasn’t at the first Thanksgiving, it did play a crucial role in the Pilgrims’ journey:

  • Beer was a staple on the Mayflower, with each person allocated about a gallon per day.
  • The decision to land at Plymouth Rock was partly influenced by dwindling beer supplies.

A Toast to Simplicity

As craft beer enthusiasts, we might feel a twinge of disappointment that our favorite beverage wasn’t part of the first Thanksgiving. However, the Pilgrims’ simple celebration, likely featuring water and possibly some hard cider, reminds us of the true spirit of the holiday – gratitude for survival and new beginnings. So this Thanksgiving, as you sip your carefully selected craft beer, take a moment to appreciate how far we’ve come. And maybe, just maybe, raise a glass of water in honor of those resourceful Pilgrims who started it all.

Sweet ‘n’ Savory https://thebeerthrillers.com/2024/10/05/sweet-n-savory/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=sweet-n-savory Sat, 05 Oct 2024 16:07:47 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=15577 Being Able to Find the Perfect Mix of Sweet and Savory Feels Like a Miracle

Being able to find the perfect mix of sweet and savory feels like a miracle. This necessarily doesn’t mean that it must include something spicy but that is always an option.

I’ve been told recently that spicy doesn’t have to be scary, so be daring with me if you tend to shy away from the heat.  But I won’t be doing that this evening, ha!

Homer drooling over a hamburger

I’m writing on here about paring foods from time to time.  One thing I get stuck on is either find flavors that are matchy or find flavors that are complimenting but different.  One random night after work.  Ya know, when your exhausted but just need some sort of nourishment.  We grabbed Pillar of Beasts from 3 Floyds Brewing at West Connection Beer Vault (we had picked this up in a mix a six, alongside several others, including the recent pumpkin beers I had with Grandma SueAnn) to have with burgers and onions from the grilled and garlicky sauteed green beans.

It. Was. Amazing.

I legit wasn’t picking this out on purpose.  It was an evening where we grabbed beer and some food to shove down our tired gullets to try to make it through the week.  First of all; barleywine.  It’s a favorite so we knew we couldn’t go wrong.  It was the perfect combo of sweet and savory.  The flavors mixed so well until I realized they were all gone.

This comes rocking in at a 13.7% ABV according to Untapped.  This definitely qualifies as a BIG DAMN BEER! #BDB

Pillar of Beasts has a 4.21 overall rating (on Untappd) and is described as “Our latest Barleywine Ale brewed with Salted Caramel, vanilla beans, and cocoa nibs then aged for 12 months in bourbon barrels.  Taste the scrumptiousness.” You can see our post on Instagram about the beer here: Pillars of Beast – The Beer Thrillers on Instagram. (Please be sure to give us a follow on Instagram. Thank you!)

Pairing the sweet barleywine with a savory burger and garlicky green beans was one of the best decisions I’ve made since I decided to date the creator of The Beer Thrillers.

Embark on a Culinary Expedition with Beer: Elevate Your Cooking Game

Embark on a Culinary Expedition with Beer Elevate Your Cooking Game

Are you a beer enthusiast keen on expanding your culinary repertoire, or perhaps eager to add a twist to traditional recipes? Cooking with beer is a delightful way to express your culinary creativity and surprise your palate with an array of tantalizing flavors.

Imagine transforming ordinary dishes into gourmet experiences that leave your taste buds craving more. Don your favorite apron, and let’s embark on a flavor-packed journey where beer is not just a beverage, but a key ingredient in unlocking the full potential of your dishes!

Discover these five ingenious methods for incorporating beer into your culinary creations:

1. Hop-Infused Salad Dressings: A Symphony of Flavors for Your Greens

Elevate your salad game by introducing the vibrant zest of hops to your dressings. The floral and citrus notes of hops, when infused into olive oil, create an unparalleled dressing base that will make your greens sing.

A survey revealed a growing enthusiasm among food enthusiasts for exploring new and exciting salad flavors. By integrating hops into your dressing, you’re not just dressing a salad; you’re orchestrating a flavor symphony that’s sure to enchant your culinary audience.

2. Malt-Rubbed Meats: A Gateway to Rich, Succulent Dishes

Impress your guests with meats that are nothing short of spectacular. Malt, known for its sweet, earthy profile, lends a remarkable depth and complexity to meats, elevating them from mere dinner options to the stars of the show.

Blend malt powder with your choice of spices and rub it onto chicken, pork, or beef before cooking. This simple yet transformative step results in irresistibly tender and richly flavored meats that promise to be the highlight of any meal.

3. Beer-Braised Vegetables: A Twist on Classic Sides

Transform your vegetables into mouthwatering masterpieces with the art of beer braising. The maltiness of beer imparts a subtle sweetness, while its hop content adds a gentle bitterness, creating a harmonious balance of flavors that will redefine your vegetable dishes.

This technique not only infuses your veggies with an irresistible flavor but also achieves a perfect texture, making them a must-try addition to your culinary repertoire.

4. Beer-Infused Breads and Pretzels: The Essence of Homemade Delight

The magic of beer can also be captured in the heartwarming aroma of baked goods. The carbonation in beer introduces a lightness to doughs, resulting in bread and pretzels that are both fluffy and rich in flavor.

Embarking on a baking journey with beer as your companion promises a rewarding experience, with each loaf or pretzel serving as a testament to your adventurous spirit and baking prowess.

5. Wheat Beer-Steamed Seafood: A Celebration of Flavors

Seafood and wheat beer make for an exquisite pairing, with the beer’s citrus undertones accentuating the natural sweetness of shellfish. Steaming seafood in a fragrant wheat beer broth is a culinary technique that promises a feast for the senses, perfect for sharing with friends on a balmy evening.

This method not only elevates the taste of your seafood but also turns your meal into a festive gathering, celebrating the union of fine ingredients and expert preparation.

Conclusion: A Toast to Culinary Innovation

Cooking with beer opens up a world of possibilities, transforming everyday meals into extraordinary culinary adventures. From vibrant salads and succulent meats to heavenly baked goods and exquisite seafood, beer introduces an added dimension of flavor that can elevate any dish. So, let the spirit of innovation guide you as you explore the boundless culinary landscape that cooking with beer offers. Here’s to your next gastronomic discovery!

Pairing Christmas Cookies with Beer https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/12/17/pairing-christmas-cookies-with-beer/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=pairing-christmas-cookies-with-beer Mon, 18 Dec 2023 02:30:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=13313 Christmas Cookies….

Right away, I blame Scarlet, I hear Cookie Monster yelling “Coooookie” This is where the visualization changes from Cookie Monster chowing down on some cookies to me destroying some Christmas Cookies.  You might have guessed it by this point, I also have a beer in hand.  So let’s figure out the best way to enjoy the holidays with cookies and Beer!

Christmas Cookies and Beer Styles

But let’s be honest you are either making the Christmas cookies or you are baking the Christmas cookies.  Let’s kick it off with The Classic Chocolate Chip Cookie.  I’d grab a stout to wash down some Classics.  I don’t just mean that because it is stout season!  The sweetness from the chocolate chips will pair nicely with a full-bodied stout with incredibly rich and creamy flavor.

Wookies and Cream by Tall Tales Brewing Company

(See our beer review: Wookies and Cream by Tall Tales Brewing Company)

B-52 by Cox Brewing Company

I’ll just go down the list of the classic Christmas cookies I remember over the years.  The next cookie I think of is any sort of sugar cookie!  My Grandma used to make a recipe of her own that was a very soft sugar cookie.  I think she actually called them sugar biscuits.  These need to be paired with a Belgium blonde.  My mouth is watering thinking about this combination again.  Honestly a sugar cookie could pair decent with a wide selection of brews but this will bring some flavors out that you didn’t notice before.

(We didn’t do any reviews of Belgian Blondes, but Josh did do a review of a Belgian Dubbel – so we present: B-52 Belgian Dubbel (Bottle-Conditioned, 2017) – Cox Brewing Company (CBC)).

Scarlet Sunrise – Blackberry and Blueberry (Mellow Mink Brewing)

The next cookie I think of is the peanut butter blossom.  My Aunt used to make these every year.  She knew these were my favorite too.  There are a couple different ways we could go with this one.  We can get a little crazy and pair with any sort of fruited sour and it feels like a grown up PB&J.

(Some beer reviews we suggest: Scarlet Sunrise – Blackberry and Blueberry (Mellow Mink Brewing), Kettle Sour Series (Raspberry) (Natchez Brewing Company), and Sour Blueberry (Edmund’s Oast Brewing Company))

Chocolate Covered Pretzel (Blown Gasket) (Braxton Brewing Company)

I am the person that believes the best invention, besides beer, was the combination of peanut butter and chocolate.  Obviously why this cookie is my favorite but also try it with a chocolatey stout or porter and it brings out more of the chocolate flavors.

(Some chocolatey beer reviews we recommend: Grand Cacao (Troegs Independent Brewing), German Chocolate Cake (Wicked Weed Brewing), Chocolate Covered Pretzel (Blown Gasket) (Braxton Brewing Company), Chocolate Confidential (Sudwerk Brewing Co.), and of course – Hershey’s Chocolate Porter (Yuengling Brewery).

They Burn Them All Away (Broken Goblet Brewing)

I kind of feel bad for even writing about this one but, the red-headed stepchild of cookies, the oatmeal raisin.  I meant to grab a container of chocolate chip cookies at the bakery in the local grocery store but I accidently grabbed oatmeal raisin in my haste to get to Ben’s parent’s house for a picnic.  I’ll never forget the pure look of heart break on his brother in law’s face at the picnic when he cracked open the container and realized they indeed oatmeal raisin and not chocolate chip like I announced.  Ever since then it’s been a joke to make sure I get the right cookie.

An oatmeal raisin cookie needs the help of a Belgian quad.  The golden almost molasses like flavor of most Belgian quads will bring out the natural raisin flavor.  And it will pair nicely with the oatmeal flavor especially if it is an oatmeal raisin cookie has a bit more cinnamon flavor to it.

(A beer review to check out: They Burn Them All Away (Broken Goblet Brewing))
(Or for a Belgian Heavy / Belgian Dark: Mad Elf (Troegs Independent Brewing))

I am summing this up by making sure you know which beer to leave out for Santa with his cookies this year.  Ditch the milk.  Santa wants beer!

Please Join Us

Please come out and join us. In addition to getting a great meal (Troegs Brewing did just release their new fall menu) and some wonderful beers you also get to help a wonderful cause like the Hops and Vines for Hunger.

Hops and Vines for Hunger

The following comes from their campaign (Our Programs) page:

Pennsylvania boasts over 800 breweries and wineries combined across the state — and that number is growing. But just as these numbers are increasing, so are the number of food insecure families and individuals across Pennsylvania. In fact, nearly 2 million Pennsylvanians struggle with hunger every day – including nearly 500,000 children.

That’s why Feeding Pennsylvania, PA Eats, and Breweries in PA are joining forces with local breweries and wineries across the state through Hops & Vines for Hunger — a month-long, statewide fundraiser throughout November. The campaign will aim to:

  • Raise funds to maximize the work of Feeding Pennsylvania’s 9 member food banks and serve Pennsylvanians facing hunger;
  • Support the development of nutrition education resources created by PA Eats to educate food-insecure Pennsylvanians on how to prepare simple, accessible meals with affordable, healthy ingredients commonly found in food pantries;
  • Promote the support of local breweries and wineries across the Commonwealth.

We are working on a massive project here at The Beer Thrillers. We are creating a map of all of the breweries across the United States. State by state we are adding maps of all of the different states with every brewery in each state. (We will eventually get to the US Territories, as well as the Canadian Provinces, and possibly more countries; as well as doing some fun maps like a map of all the breweries we’ve been to, and other fun maps.) You can find the brewery maps here:

We are also working on a project of creating printable and downloadable PDFs and resources to be able to check and keep track of all of the breweries you’ve been to. So stay tuned for that project once we are finished with the Brewery Maps of the US States.

The Beer Thrillers are Joining the Hops and Vines for Hunger Cause

As you might have seen on the Hops and Vines for Hunger Facebook and / or Instagram pages today – The Beer Thrillers have joined their cause.

As we covered in our previous article – Hops and Vines for Hunger (2023) – Hops and Vines for Hunger reached out to us letting us know this year they were actively trying to get bloggers, content creators, and influencers to join the cause – alongside breweries, wineries, and distilleries.

Hops and Vines for Hunger

The campaign aims to:

  • Raise funds to maximize the work of Feeding Pennsylvania’s nine member food banks and serve Pennsylvanians facing hunger
  • Support the development of nutrition education resources created by PA Eats to educate food-insecure Pennsylvanians on how to prepare simple, accessible meals with affordable, healthy ingredients commonly found in food pantries
  • Promote the support of local breweries and wineries across the Commonwealth

This is a month long fundraiser in November and they have been doing it yearly now for a few years.

Registration is now closed for new members to join adding their name to the cause – but you can still help. You can donate through the numerous breweries, wineries, distilleries, bloggers, content creators, YouTubers, and Influencers who have joined this great cause.

The Beer Thrillers

We will be writing several articles promoting various breweries and their contributions and programs to raise money for the Hops and Vines for Hunger program and cause – as well as thinking and finding ways of our own to participate and donate to the cause.

So please join us in bringing attention to this great cause and helping us promote, help, donate, and help it grow. Stay tuned with us for more information and more articles.

Hop Shoot Omelet https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/04/10/hop-shoot-omelet/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=hop-shoot-omelet Mon, 10 Apr 2023 11:52:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=11015
Hop Omelet – With a beer of course.

Hop Shoot Omelet

Who doesn’t love a yummy omelet to start their day? Are you needing new ideas for your omelets? Want something all vegan, all tasty, and can also even be all home grown? Then this is an omelet for you.

It is a pretty simple, straight forward recipe, not a ton of ingredients, and lots of room to add, change, or tweak the recipe to your particular likes.

The Hops

Hops starting to grow in our gardens here at The Beer Thrillers Headquarters

Hops are one of the main ingredients in beer (along with water and yeast). For the purposes of making a hop shoot omelet, any variety of hops will work, and so far as I can tell there’s no taste difference between variants in hops (as far as eating them goes). At The Beer Thrillers Headquarters (or Bender Braus Brewery) we have Cascade, Chinook, Centennial, Nugget, and Saaz. We had potted Walhalla, Willamette, and Magnum. Unfortunately over the winter the potted ones didn’t survive.

Harvesting the shoots is pretty easy. March – April the hops will begin to pop up out of the ground (depending on how the weather has been, but its usually end of March to beginning of April that you’ll see them popping up). For growing the hops (for use of the hop cones) you only want a few of the vines to grow, so you need to snip and cut the remainder away, which is perfect for making our meal.

When ready to make your meal (typically the morning of), go out to your hop vines and snip off the ‘heads’ of each vine. See image below for the ‘heads’ of the vines.

Hop heads

Only cut about 1 – 2″ from the top of each of the vines, this is the ‘hop heads’ and is the most tender and tasty part of the hop vines / hop shoots.

A quick rinse under the water before getting them on the skillet or pan is all you really need to do, and thats a cursory rinse just to remove any debris or dirt.

Reminder – Use Only the Tender Parts

Friendly reminder – use only the most tender part of the hop vines. This will probably be only the top head of the vine, or about 1″ to 1.5″ – 2″ of the vine. Anything more than that its going to get very fibrous and chewy and not very tasty. It’ll also have tiny little prickles.

Depending on when you find them, your hop shoots may be short or just a couple inches, or very long like vines – this is why I recommend early season for the hop shoot omelets. Right around Easter time is usually the perfect time to trim and clip off the unwanted vines before the hop plants grow into a massive tangled mass. Hop shoots can be harvested at any time of the year up, but its best to do it early in the year. As long as there is tender, young growth to harvest they’re fine to eat.

Early season works best because you are already pruning the hops back naturally anyway, so its kind of a “kill two birds with one stone” kind of scenario.

Ingredients and Equipment

Hop Shoots Omelet

This is a very simple and adjustable meal. You can decide how many eggs you want, you can decide what greens, meats, etc., you want in. Herbs, spices; pretty much everything is up to you.

But here is generally what I use when I make a hop shoots omelet at home:

  • As much fresh hop shoot heads as you have (or want to use)
  • 4 – 6 eggs
  • 1 or 2 chopped bell peppers
  • 1 / 2 chopped onion
  • Optional meats: 2 oz of bacon, sausage, kielbasa, or your preferred meat
  • salt (sea salt or kosher salt), oregano, thyme, lemon pepper seasoning, Italian seasoning, garlic salt or powder

Serving size depends on number of eggs used; but generally serves 2 – 4 people.

Best as a breakfast, brunch, or as an appetizer before dinner.

Equipment and tools needed:

  • Skillet or pan (preferably 10″ stove pan)
  • Chopping boards for peppers, onions, meat
  • Bowls for chopped vegetables before adding them to the pan
  • container to beat the eggs in before adding them to the pan
  • knives / utensils (for cutting up peppers, onion, meat, and for beating the eggs)

Instructions

Hop Shootss Omelet
  1. Ready the stove, heating the pan, use butter or vegetable oil, or spray to prevent sticking
  2. Prepare your eggs – beat them in the container until nice and fluffy
  3. Prepare your vegetables and meat you are adding (chop them and put them in bowls)
  4. Prepare your hop shoots (rinse them delicately, and keep them in a bowl)
  5. Saute the hop shoots, the pepper, and onion
  6. If you are using meat, add when necessary
  7. Add in the eggs, stir, twirl, and keep the eggs properly distributed about the pan

Overall cooking time should take roughly 10 – 15 minutes (depending on how you like your eggs, meat, and vegetables).

Serving

Remember – always serve with a beer

Serving size depends on the amount of eggs and vegetables you added, but typically it should serve 2 – 4. You can top it with cheese or any other spices, herbs, or flavorings you wish. One thing you do certainly need to serve it with though is a beer!

You’ve worked hard now, grab a delicious craft beer, and chow down! Enjoy!
