Fuzzy Few Festival

Previously known as the Fuzzy Few Carnival, this year the Fuzzy Few Organization is renaming and rebranding it as a Festival rather than a carnival.

For the past 56 years it has been the Fuzzy Few Carnival and has happened near or around the middle of August every year. With the Hummelstown Fireman’s Carnival happening in the end of June each year.

Unfortunately, as with most things – COVID – 19 changed a lot of the way events, activities, and things like this work. And with all of that it became harder and harder for the Fuzzy Few Organization (FFO) to be able to secure carnival groups to come help assist their carnival each year. Last year they were unable to have rides and other vendors due to this, but they did procure some inflatable activities and playground stuff for children.

(See last year’s article: Fuzzy Few Organization Presents the Fuzzy Few Festival With Beer Garden 2024.)

So pivoting for 2023 they announced the Fuzzy Few Festival (instead of the Fuzzy Few Carnival).

Now in its second year as the Fuzzy Few Festival, it returns for 2024 from August 12th through August 17th.

It will run from August 11th through August 16th 2025 at Schaffner Park (Boro Park).

Beer Garden

The Beer Garden has moved from the caged in basketball courts to right directly in front of the band stage – and as a bonus – they will allow guests to purchase the alcohol and move about the festival rather than having to stay within the basketball court like last year.

Known beer will be Troegs Independent Brewing (who has graciously donated eight [8] cases of beer to the event) – Perpetual IPA, Sunshine Pilsner, and Graffiti Highway IPA – as well as Blue Moon, Coors Light, and Miller Lite. (More could be announced.) Also on top of beer there is mixed drink, wine, cocktails, and select other beverages.

Pentagon

Unfortunately this year, there will be no Pentagon, as they retired last year after the Fuzzy Few Festival 2024.

Amy and the Alzheimer’s Association

Make sure you stop out to visit Amy at her Alzheimer’s Assocciation stand. (I’ll also be helping out a few nights after work). Raising awareness for Alzheimer’s and for the Alzheimer’s Association.

She will have a stand at the Festival, so you can stop in, talk with her (or us) and hang out, and get information, fliers, pamphlets and information about Alzheimer’s, the Alzheimer’s Association, and their work raising awareness, looking for a cure, charitable work, as well as the upcoming End ALZ Walks.

History of Fuzzy Few Organization

The founding of the Organization, know as the Fuzzy Few, came about during Hummelstown’s 200th Anniversary. It was formed as a Bearded Brothers Club to participate in that celebration. After playing a very active role during the time of fun and merriment, the men in the club decided to apply for an official charter and operate as a non-profit organization in the community of Hummelstown.

The organization’s official emblem was registered and approved on December 29th, 1963. The emblem also indicates the clubs desire to promote goodwill and fellowship not only within the organization but also throughout the community and surrounding areas.

The goal of the organization since its founding has been to establish and support community and youth related programs.

MILWAUKEE DIAPER MISSION IS BACK AT LAKEFRONT BREWERY, LOOKING TO PILE THE DIAPERS EVEN HIGHER https://thebeerthrillers.com/2025/01/28/milwaukee-diaper-mission-is-back-at-lakefront-brewery-looking-to-pile-the-diapers-even-higher/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=milwaukee-diaper-mission-is-back-at-lakefront-brewery-looking-to-pile-the-diapers-even-higher Tue, 28 Jan 2025 18:35:36 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=15909 MILWAUKEE DIAPER MISSION IS BACK AT LAKEFRONT BREWERY, LOOKING TO PILE THE DIAPERS EVEN HIGHER

MILWAUKEE DIAPER MISSION IS BACK AT LAKEFRONT BREWERY, LOOKING TO PILE THE DIAPERS EVEN HIGHER. Lakefront and Milwaukee Diaper Mission team up for their 3rd annual diaper drive, after 2 successful events in 2023 and 2024.

Lakefront Brweery Diaper Drive 2025

Lakefront Brewery’s 2024 diaper drive was the 2nd biggest donation intake event for Milwaukee Diaper Mission bringing in 9,300 diapers and over 19,000 wipes. Lakefront is eyeing that top spot and is asking the community to help get diapers into the hands of the people who need them most.

“Milwaukee Diaper Mission has been such a local hero to the Milwaukee community”, says Liz Mauritz, Lakefront’s Ripple Effect donation program coordinator, “they continue to grow and expand their reach, so we’re excited to support their continued success. Learning how many caretakers struggle with such a basic need as diapers is heartbreaking. Our diaper drives give us that avenue to activate our space and make a difference. As a family-friendly establishment, we see this as an opportunity to give back.”

On Sunday, February 16th, bring in as many unopened, fully packaged, disposable diapers as you want to Lakefront Brewery from 11AM to 4PM and receive Lakefront cash in return. For every diaper you donate, you will receive $.25 (25 cents) in Lakefront Brewery gift cards to spend in their Beer Hall that day or any day in the future. Lakefront will also be accepting fully packaged baby wipes and training pants, giving out $.25 for each pair of training pants and for every 10 wipes. Milwaukee Diaper Mission will accept all applicable items they can help distribute but please be aware that diapers, training pants, and wipes will be the only items accepted for Lakefront Brewery gift cards.

Milwaukee Diaper Mission does note that they’re most in need of 2, 3, 5, and 6-size diapers. If you can’t make it down to Lakefront but still want to show your support? Visit Milwaukee Diaper Mission’s website here: https://www.milwaukeediapermission.org/

Milwaukee Diaper Mission is a basic needs bank. They partner with local social service agencies to provide a reliable source of essentials, including diapers, something that shouldn’t be considered a luxury, but a need. One in two families in the U.S. lack the funds to keep up with their diaper needs. Milwaukee Diaper Mission utilizes a distribution model that is efficient and cost-effective, ensuring that diapers get in the hands of those who need them most.

At the Fuzzy Few Festival: A YAH Brew and a Schmidt’s Sausage https://thebeerthrillers.com/2024/08/29/at-the-fuzzy-few-festival-a-yah-brew-and-a-schmidts-sausage/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=at-the-fuzzy-few-festival-a-yah-brew-and-a-schmidts-sausage Fri, 30 Aug 2024 01:00:22 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=15482

A YAH Brew and a Schmidt’s Sausage (with Kraut)

A YAH Brew and a Schmidt’s Sausage (with Kraut) at the Fuzzy Few Festival

This delight was enjoyed Saturday August 17th, the last day of the Fuzzy Few Festival in Hummelstown, PA.  This event has morphed since it’s inception over 55 years ago.  It felt like much more of a community supporting community.  (See our Instagram post from the Fuzzy Few Festival.)

I also spent every single night with an Alzheimer’s Association table setup.  I shared information and resources for those who shared concern or were going through a situation involving dementia or Alzheimer’s impacting their lives.  We also invited folks to join us at the Walk to End Alzheimer’s event on Saturday November 2, 2024 at City Island. (Walk to End Alzheimer’s – Harrisburg Area Walk.)

The Fuzzy Few Festival ran from August 12th until August 17.  Most evenings the crowd walking around to play games and connect with local organizations died down by 9pm.  Most everyone had pulled up a lawn chair and was enjoying the free nightly concert.  A free event for the community is a gem to find. (See our article on the Fuzzy Few Festival 2024.)

With a wonderful donation from Troeg’s beer (last year, in 2023 – the Fuzzy Few Festival had the beer garden located inside the basketball court’s caged in area) it was nice to see a “beer garden” not far from where concert goers were enjoying their evening.  I mean if a community event is fundraising and providing free entertainment, why isn’t it busier here?

There still seems to be a stir amongst some former supporters of the carnival.  The move from out of state rides and game providers to come into our town seems to be the main complaint.  Although the need for volunteers is always so imperative and more dire.

(Volunteer for the Fuzzy Few Organization.)

YAH Brew continues to be a community supporter. With events like the “Benefit for CJ” and several collaboration beers to benefit local nonprofits. It would be great to see many more communities supporting communities. I can guarantee I’ll be continuing to support YAH Brew and Schmidt’s Sausage; and definitely the Fuzzy Few Organization. (Shout out to Justin for dropping the beer off to me on Saturday night. Megan and Dr. Barisch were hanging out at the Alzheimer’s tent with me, discussing the Bicycle Criterium in Hummelstown, and I sent them over to Justin to talk about Hummelstown and to enjoy YAH Beers.)

Fuzzy Few Festival

(Editor Ben piping up here)

The Fuzzy Few Festival was another fun year. Amy and her mom worked dueling stands / tents at the event. Amy had an informational booth for the Alzheimer’s Association, while Grandma SueAnn had a stand selling magnets with the donations and money raised going to the Walk to End ALZ events.

I helped set up with Amy on Sunday morning before work (Sunday the 11th). Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday I was able to attend the event, mostly to help keep an eye on Scarlet (who loved running around, and especially loved playing in the Duck game’s water).

Two of my older daughters got to come and hang out with us on Thursday and absolutely cleaned house at the dime pitch. (We landed the Appalachian Brewing growler, but with no cap, and no real interest in growlers anymore, we let another lay claim to it).

All in all it was an absolutely fantastic event. My parents had a good time when they visited (my dad enjoyed getting to see the final performance of Pentagon), Grandma SueAnn said she sold a good number of magnets, and Amy got to help provide people with critical information about the Alzheimer’s Association.

LAKEFRONT BREWERY PARTNERS WITH RIVERWEST ELEMENTARY TO RAISE IMPORTANT FUNDS FOR THEIR STUDENTS https://thebeerthrillers.com/2024/08/15/lakefront-brewery-partners-with-riverwest-elementary-to-raise-important-funds-for-their-students/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=lakefront-brewery-partners-with-riverwest-elementary-to-raise-important-funds-for-their-students Thu, 15 Aug 2024 13:52:10 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=15407

Lakefront looks to a variety of ways to fundraise for the school’s eco-friendly playground renovation designed by community partner, Reflo

LAKEFRONT BREWERY PARTNERS WITH RIVERWEST ELEMENTARY TO RAISE IMPORTANT FUNDS FOR THEIR STUDENTS

The local brewery’s Ripple Effect donation program continues to look for ways to better the community around them. Starting August 13th, they will begin their initiative to help raise funds to redevelop a greener, healthier, and safer schoolyard for the students of Riverwest Elementary. “We want to help the youth in our community feel valued and worthy of a proper place outside of their school to partake in activities that nurture their full potential”, says Liz Mauritz, Lakefront’s donation program coordinator.

Riverwest Elementary has partnered with local nonprofit, Reflo, who has designed a renovation to the school’s outdoor space that will remove 27,200 square feet of asphalt and replace it with new green space and mixed-use recreation and educational areas. The plan would manage approximately 137,615 gallons of stormwater per rain event and provides much safer play for the kids. Learn more about the project by going here: https://refloh2o.com/riverwest-elementary

Much like their famous, “Putin is a Dick” crowler initiative for relief in Ukraine, they are now selling specially designed “Fund the Fun” crowlers. Lakefront will match an added $5 cost to make a $10 total donation for each “Fund the Fun” crowler sold. Crowlers are 32-ounce cans that can be filled and sealed with any Lakefront beer on tap. “Fund the Fun” crowlers are available in person or by ordering ahead for pick up through their website. Additionally, for the entire month of September, Lakefront patrons may opt to round up their bill to donate to the cause.

The marquee fundraising event will be an Adult Spelling Bee at Lakefront Brewery Beer Hall on Thursday, September 19th. Lakefront will welcome teams to purchase a table and participate in a bar trivia-style spelling bee where they will work together to properly spell each challenging word. Tables will cost $120 (plus fees) and teams will be allowed up to 6 total people to compete. All table costs will be donated to the project as well as $1 of every beer purchased that day. The top 3 teams will take home Lakefront gift cards as prizes. Funds from a silent auction featuring an array of items will also be donated to the project that night, including a signed Damian Lillard jersey and basketball!

The event will get underway at 5:30PM with the Spelling Bee beginning at 6:30PM. Lakefront welcomes all to stop by and get involved, guests are not required to have a spelling bee table to enter. Table reservations are available through this link: https://www.exploretock.com/lakefront-brewery/event/497996/adult-spelling-bee-fund-the-fun

Riverwest Elementary has indicated that the redevelopment will cost over $200,000, so they hope the community can rally around the project and participate at any level within their means.

Two Years Later – Brewfests with Anxiety https://thebeerthrillers.com/2024/02/09/two-years-later-brewfests-with-anxiety/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=two-years-later-brewfests-with-anxiety Fri, 09 Feb 2024 17:44:43 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=14330

Two Years Later – Same Brewfest – Same Anxiety

I went to another Brewfest and didn’t have a panic attack.  Two years later and it’s still a major win.  A crowded event is always a stressor, even just a crowded restaurant can send me into a tailspin. Coming back to the Cushwa Brewing Co for the 7th Anny Brewfest celebration I was reminded of the 5th anniversary two years ago. (Brewfests with Anxiety)

Cushwa Brewfest Glassware

The 7th Anny was held at the Cushwa Brewing Co. tasting room shared with Rad pies.  It was a congested area and bumping into other Brewfest goers was inevitable.  I think by the end we all were done apologizing to each other for it.

It was a decent weather day for a Saturday in January.  I was so glad we could take advantage of the picnic benches outside of the tasting room.  For some reason I had an idea in my head that I needed to feel as carefree as I did two years ago; that I had to absolutely not feel any anxiety about entering a crowded event space.  I am not sure why we build these unfair expectations in our minds sometimes but it’s a silly waste of energy.

Also it’s been a crazy two years since the last Cushwa Brewfest:  I got a new job, I moved in with my boyfriend and we had a baby together.  I’ve had a rough time adjusting to motherhood in my forties and I don’t know what I’d do if I didn’t have him.

The beers at the brewfest were absolutely wonderful. We loved the RAR offerings, the Crooked Crab barrel aged beers were fantastic, Fidens was a good TIPA, and there were so many different options and different styles. It was nice to see that it wasn’t just “here’s an IPA” “here’s another IPA” “and oh look, another IPA”, there were lots of varieties and different styles, and from breweries from all over which was a nice change of pace too.

Ben Taking Over

Amy has been working on this column piece since… pretty much since we got back from Cushwa and Williamsport, MD. After the brewfest we did a small share with friends at the hotel, just like we had two years ago, and the day after we hit a few breweries on the way back home (we hit Interchange Brewing, Amani Brewing, Thick n Thin Brewing, Upper Stem Brewing, and Fourscore Beer). She asked me to help finish our the column for her since she’s been struggling with it a bit. Its certainly not easy doing weekly columns, and especially about one with such a serious and delicate issue – and even moreso because of how close it hits to the bone on this one.

This is a serious matter, and one that is definitely not to be taken lightly or a joke. Anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, etc are all big deep issues, and something many, many, many, many, many people face. Most without having someone to talk to about it. Most without having a chance to discuss their very serious issues and thoughts with someone.

Thank you to Amy for talking about her issues, and her fight against anxiety. Its great to see her being able to step out of that, to overcome it, and get to go have fun at events like this. Her Brewfests with Anxiety post is perfectly worded and she does an absolutely amazing job of discussing it.

The Overnight Walk

Dealing with mental illness is NOT easy either by living with it yourself or supporting a loved one living with mental illness.  This summer I will be walking 16 miles overnight in Boston in the out of the darkness walk.  This walk is very important and supports the American Foundation for Suicide Prevent in  Funding Research for Suicide Prevention, Create and Distribute Education Programs, Advocate for Public Policy and Support Those Affected by Suicide.  Please consider donating here:  https://www.theovernight.org/participant/45186

We are working on a massive project here at The Beer Thrillers. We are creating a map of all of the breweries across the United States. State by state we are adding maps of all of the different states with every brewery in each state. (We will eventually get to the US Territories, as well as the Canadian Provinces, and possibly more countries; as well as doing some fun maps like a map of all the breweries we’ve been to, and other fun maps.) You can find the brewery maps here:

We are also working on a project of creating printable and downloadable PDFs and resources to be able to check and keep track of all of the breweries you’ve been to. So stay tuned for that project once we are finished with the Brewery Maps of the US States.

Mad Elf on the Shelf Fundraiser https://thebeerthrillers.com/2020/12/15/mad-elf-fundraiser/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=mad-elf-fundraiser Wed, 16 Dec 2020 04:40:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=6447
Mad Elf Fundraiser

With the latest spat of mandates and changes by Governor Wolfe for Pennsylvania breweries, restaurants, and bars, around fifty (50) front of the house employees at Troegs Craft Brewing have been laid off. On top of that several others have taken wage cuts to help the brewery out during these times.

So to help these employees out, a GoFundMe page was started by Alle Confair. You can find the GoFundMe here: Mad Elf Fundraiser – GoFundMe to Help Troegs Employees.

Front of the house employees at Troegs Brewing

The fundraiser was posted and started today. They are looking to make 25,000$ for all of the employees as a whole. (Edited: As of the morning of 12.16.20, they are up to 2,225$ of the 25,000$ goal.)

You can read the description on the GoFundMe here:

“Come one, come all,

Help raise some holiday cheer;

Your local Tröegs beertenders are facing their worst fears.

As the corona-virus continues to take,

It is our turn to give back to those who are at stake.

A small token of faith can make a big change,

Especially for those suffering with no wage.

Let us locals pay it forward to make someone’s day,

Together we have the power to save another’s holiday.

Let us propose a toast from afar,

Until we meet again across the Tröegs bar.

Cheers from our Mad Elf on the Shelf!

Please consider making a donation to those who heavily rely on service tips for their income and livelihood. As the hospitality industry continues to suffer extreme hardship, all we can do is try to find ways to support each other. Thank you and Happy Holidays from ours to yours!

We here at The Beer Thrillers know several people in the above picture, as well as several other employees at Troegs Brewing, I myself have been temporarily furloughed until January 4th as well. So we here know how hard and difficult of a time this, especially with the holidays, and the New Year, and the uncertainty of the pandemic and the virus and everything going on. This is a very scary and uneasy time for so many people.

So we are hoping if you are reading this, you are able to donate, or at least share and help where you can. Thank you!

Cheers everyone, and lets remember, we are all in this together! Help your local breweries during these tough times at the holidays!

Happy Holidays.
