Stealing and Dealing Your Beer

Without knowing it, you may have been drinking a stolen beer at your last happy hour. Organized rings of beer thieves across the United States have been taking thousands of gallons of beer from trains, breweries and delivery trucks. Rather than Robin Hoods—stealing beer from the rich to give to the thirsty—these criminals sell the looted beer to bars and restaurants.

Beer heists are more than shoplifting a couple of six packs from the local liquor store.

• $675,000 worth of beer was looted from a Houston warehouse.
• Two hundred cases of beer were robbed from a warehouse and discovered in a van after a police pursuit in Fontana, California.
• 719 cases of Dos Equis beer were swiped from an Austin, Texas distributor.
• Two refrigerator trailers containing 3,300 cases of beer were stolen from an Atlanta craft brewery.

But it was a ring of beer thieves busted last spring in the Northeast United States that perpetrated the widest ranging number of beer heists. For at least two years, the “Beer Theft Enterprise” stole hundreds of thousands of dollars of Corona and Modelo across four states. Often armed with guns, the group cut through fences, broke locks and hauled out beer from railyards and warehouses under the cover of night. According to the U.S. Department of Justice’s announcement of the gang’s indictment —and without realizing the pun—the criminal group had “left several beverage distribution and railroad companies ailing.”

How does looted beer get from railyard to bar? Understanding how beer makes its way to the black market—and potentially to your glass—it’s important to first learn why beer is targeted for heists.

The Felony in the Fridge

In many ways, beer is not an ideal product for a criminal gang to steal and deal. Unlike narcotics, criminals aren’t producing their own beer and selling it directly to consumers. Nor do they partner with illegal producers seeking to move their beer on the street. Beer thieves, instead, must rob businesses to procure the product. Breaking into a business heightens the risks of being caught, arrested and imprisoned. Not only do thieves have to burgle a location where beer is kept, but to be profitable, they have to take a lot of it. This makes clandestinely transporting and storing large quantities complicated.

Complicated, but not impossible. Despite the downsides, beer is an attractive target for organized thieves. Criminal gangs know there’s a demand among bar and restaurant owners for cut-rate beer. Criminals also know that stolen beer easily blends-in with the legitimately purchased stock. Glancing in a walk-in refrigerator, the difference between legally and illegally acquired beer inventory is nearly indistinguishable. The ease of concealing stolen beer is tempting enough for some business owners to risk paying criminals for some. All of this makes beer, unlike some goods from other robberies, easier for criminals to offload. No visits to shady pawnshops required.

Getting caught stealing and dealing beer also have lower legal penalties than trafficking illegal products like hard drugs. Police and prosecutors are often more focused on crimes that directly, and more severely, harm public safety. After all, it’s not cocaine; it’s just beer.

The relative ease of selling stolen beer, the lower criminal penalties and the potential of a high payoff can be seductive reasons for individuals to join a heist. In fact, the ringleader of the Beer Theft Enterprise openly recruited on Instagram for help with his robberies by promising lucrative paydays. One post read that participants “in the beer train method” would be guaranteed “100k+ in a month.” Another post included a picture of a railroad with the caption “Need workers who want to make [money bag emoji]” with a “Yes” or “No” vote button.

How many people hit the “yes” button for a heist isn’t publicly known. But the brazen recruitment on Instagram reveals how manpower is essential for a beer heist. Lookouts, drivers, and people with the ability to operate heavy machinery like forklifts are usually needed for a large-scale beer robbery. Someone willing to threaten or use violence to gain access to the targeted beer may also be included. A member of the Beer Theft Enterprise threatened railyard and warehouse employees at gunpoint for entry into railcars and warehouses.

To avoid the possibility of violence, criminal rings can include an employee where beer is stored to leave a door unlocked or an alarm unarmed. This insider may also be able to pre-position beer for accomplices to load more quickly. For example, an insider was intimately involved with the beer distribution warehouse robbery in Austin, Texas. On an agreed upon date and time, he moved cases of selected beers closer to the loading dock for easier removal by the beer thieves.

After the gang accesses the beer, it’s loaded in vehicles for transport to another location. There, the criminal gang inspects the beer for any damage. Broken bottles, burst cans or cracked kegs are worthless on the black market.

For the gang, selling the undamaged beer is the next step. In one instance, the Beer Theft Enterprise sold its looted beer to a middleman…and a middlewoman. According to a West Haven Police arrest warrant, one of the ring’s members admitted that after a heist the group unloaded “the stolen beer at a garage in the Bronx next to a bodega, where the receiver was ‘a Russian guy and a young girl.’” The pair paid the thieves in cash for the beer, which was likely destined for bars, restaurants and stores around New York City.

Over a Barrel

The beer industry is uniquely vulnerable to large-scale thefts by criminal rings. America’s three-tier liquor distribution system almost invites beer heists. Put in place after Prohibition, the system is comprised of producers who make alcohol to sell to distributors in the middle who collect alcohol tax when selling to retailers. The first and second tiers create the black market for criminals—by taking beer, criminals remove the costs of tax for retailers while pocketing the money for themselves.

The result is millions of dollars in lost revenue for brewers, distributors and communities. Because of their economic damage, these crimes deserve to be a higher priority for law enforcement. But it’s unknown how often beer heists occur. Neither the U.S. Department of Justice nor beer industry groups keep statistics on large-scale beer thefts. Beyond media reporting, there is little information about these crimes. This dearth of information is part of the
problem. Without knowing the scope and scale of this type of criminal activity, prioritization won’t happen, and effective solutions will be wanting.

Without a more comprehensive examination of beer heists along with serious efforts to combat them, your happy hour beer will always be a little suspicious….

Double Perpetual IPA by Troegs Independent Brewing

Troegs Brewing Releasing Double Perpetual IPA

On August 19th, Troegs Independent Brewing will be releasing Double Perpetual IPA; their new once-yearly release. Taking the place of Hop Cyclone in the rotation of Double IPAs this year, Double Perpetual IPA will be making its official debut as a non-scratch beer.

Double Perpetual IPA was previously released last year as Scratch #500 alongside Scratch #501 – known as Triple Perpetual. (See: Troegs Brewing is Releasing Scratch 500 Double Perpetual and Scratch 501 Triple Perpetual.) Where Triple Perpetual IPA was a “happy mistake”, Double Perpetual IPA was released as an anniversary of their 500th scratch release (Troegs Brewing’s version of research and development), Double Perpetual IPA was an immediate fan favorite. So Triple Perpetual IPA became Scratch 501 and the new Double Perpetual IPA became Scratch 500.

Double Perpetual IPA will be released at the Troegs Brewery in Hershey PA on August 19th, 2024. It will be released in 16 oz cans as well as on draft. You’ll be able to find it in four packs and in cases, as well as in singles in the General Store at the brewery. (Unlike last year, there won’t be any limits on the beer.) It will be going out onto the market and will see distribution. You can use their Brew Finder to find Double Perpetual IPA near you. You can find it in their General Store (to go) or in their Tasting Room (for on site consumption) at their brewery, located at 200 Hersheypark Dr, Hershey, PA 17033.

Troegs Brewing Releasing Second Cut DIPA

Back in October of 2023 we announced that Troegs Brewing would be releasing a “Double Cut” version of First Cut, and its finally time for the release. Welcome to Second Cut DIPA. The newest scheduled ‘once a year’ or ‘yearly’ release by Troegs Brewing in their DIPA (Double IPA) series. Second Cut will be releasing on April 22nd, 2024. (Perfectly in time for Earth Day.)

Unlike the above original label image, the Second Cut DIPA will be coming in at 8.5% ABV rather than 9.5%. It will be a Double IPA and is based off the Scratch 507 formula and recipe. It is a double version of First Cut IPA – so expect bright flavorful notes of Mango.

The newest DIPA to hit Troegs Brewery is an amplified version of First Cut IPA. A mango hoppy IPA that is a fan favorite at the brewery that sees just brewery release (and in this year’s fashion also limited local distribution). Second Cut DIPA will be seeing distribution as is befitting a new ‘once a year’ beer at Troegs. Expect it out on the markets starting on April 22nd, gradually hitting the further away markets as the days go by.

Second Cut DIPA is similar in how Troegs has released Double Nugget Nectar and Double Perpetual IPA. (Look for Double Perpetual IPA to be making a return later this year as well.)

First Cut

From our previous article – Second Cut DIPA Releasing This Spring – here are the notes of First Cut. Expect this x2 for Second Cut IPA:

The First Cut is a fan favorite and has a bit of a ‘cult following’ at the brewery. It is a 6.2% IPA – American style, with 45 IBU. Its typically released late February to early March each year at the brewery in Hershey. It has over 52,000 ratings on Untappd with a global average rating of 3.79 (as of 10.13.23). The Untappd description reads: Each spring, hop growers dust off their pruning shears and trim the first shoots, bolstering the bines for a rich growing season. First Cut – a mouthful of silky Simcoe and a touch of mango – is a nod to this ritual, without which the world would be a less hoppy place.

Release

Second Cut Mango DIPA will be releasing on April 22nd, 2024 at the brewery as well as in distribution. The brewery opens at 11:30AM Monday, April 22nd, 2024. Second Cut will come in four packs of 16 oz pounder cans, and in cases. It will also be on draft in the store. There could potentially be sixtels for sale for customers as well. There is currently no listed limits for the purchases, and online sales of the beer will go live at 11:30AM as well.

Whats better than a “single” Nugget Nectar? …Of course a “Double” Nugget Nectar! And its coming in cans on January 22nd, 2024. Following hot on the heels of the FIRST SQUEEZE WEEKEND at the Troegs Brewery from January 18th through the 21st, where you can get a sneak peek of the Double Nugget Nectar on draft (as well as Nitro Nugget), it is being released, on Monday, January 22nd, 2024 in cans.

The Nugget Nectar First Squeeze event had everything a Nugget Nectar maniac could want. Double Nugget Nectar on draft (and for sale in crowlers and growlers), Nitro Nugget on draft (not available to go), a glass giveaway, Nugget Nectar hop cone stress ball giveaway, a signing by one of the Nugget Nectar First Squeeze artists, trivia with Ffej and much more.

Double Nugget Nectar will be released in cans to go on Monday, January 22nd, 2024. They come in 16 oz “pounder” cans. You can purchase them as a single, in a four pack, and in cases.

The general store and the tasting room opens at 11:30 AM on Monday.

There is currently no limit on purchases in the general store. The Double Nugget Nectar will also be hitting distribution, and a lot more has been made than the first year it was released as a brewery only beer.

Untappd Description: Let’s take Nugget and double it. Well, it wasn’t quite that easy, but it sure was a fun balancing act. To start, we boosted the Simcoe, and this complex hop’s notes of apricot, peach rings and bright citrus are the star of the show. Azacca enters the picture to add hints of juicy orchard fruit, and Munich malt brings a bready sweetness. To strike a balancing note, Columbus joins Nugget hops, grounding this limited release with a layer of dank pine.

A Blizzard is Coming to Hershey PA

Its a bit early in the year for a blizzard to be hitting Central PA – but in Hershey, Pennsylvania – a blizzard of hops will be piling up the hops starting Monday, October 23rd, 2023 at the Troegs Independent Brewery.

Although the Blizzard of Hops IPA has been out in their Canthology 4 variety packs for a week now; Blizzard of Hops IPA will be making its yearly awaited downfall at the brewery tomorrow. Coming in bottles, cans, as well as draft in the tasting room.

Distribution

Blizzard of Hops IPA will also be distributed to all of the markets that Troegs Brewing already covers. (Some might be getting it early, reports from some are a bit over the place.)

Look for it in all of your favorite distribution centers and grocery stores.

Troegs Independent Brewing opens their brewery tomorrow at 11:30 AM and closes at 9:00 PM. You can find the Blizzard of Hops IPA in their general store as well as on draft in their tasting room at opening.

Double Blizzard will be making its yearly return sometime in mid – November. After you get your fill of Blizzard it’ll be time to ramp up to the Double Blizzard!
