RAR during the Star Wars Festival on May 3rd

I went to the RAR Brewing “May the 4th Be with you fest but on the 3rd” but I am not a Star Wars fan.  I don’t mean I don’t like Star Wars I just never fell in love with it.  I loved watching the 3 OGs that came out years and years ago.  I will drop quotes and funny memes.  And I am assuming since I am dating the Editor of this blog, I will be forced someday to do an entire streaming of all things Star Wars.  I am here for it.

(See our article: RAR Brewing’s May the 3rd Fest)

(See our article: RAR Brewing’s May the Fourth 2025 Beer Can Drop)

I’m a Star Wars….

We arrived on the scene in Cambridge Maryland and scoped out the parking lot.  It was small and not surprisingly already full.  We drove a couple blocks away to a free street parking spot and pulled in ready for an afternoon of enjoying a fun brewery and street festival.  There was a mix of local older aged attendees mixed with Star Wars lovers and some dressed in Star Wars Cosplay.  The entire layout of the Festival was welcoming and relaxing.

May the 4th be with you; and I also with you (sorry, I can’t help it) fest but on the 3rd was a fun, relaxing afternoon in the quaint town of Cambridge Maryland.  There was art, music, beer, lots of beer, merch and good food.

It was a tad bit confusing on how to participate in the tasting tent at first but maybe I also can’t read the instructions.  We quickly purchased our bracelets and tickets to sample all the themed beers.  It was exciting seeing all the beers available for tasting for some stellar breweries; Bash Bros Collective, Imprint Beer Co, Burlington Beer Co, 2SP Brewing Company, Autodidact Beer, Tripping Animals Brewing, Clag, Spylgass Brewing Company, Maine Beer Company, Movement Brewing Company, Voodoo Brewing Company, Dewey Beer, Frost Beer Works, Four Point and Finback

We started off with the “Cuddle Buddies” 10% ABV Cream Triple IPA from Tripping Animals and 10.1%ABV “Even Fuller Very Circular” Triple IPA W/ Citra and Mosaic by Autodidact.  I think you already know The Beer Thrillers come in heavy.  These did not disappoint, and we quickly found a spot in the shade to chill and anticipate our next sample tastings.

Then we had to try a flight of the RAR themed beers for the day.  Swamp Planet -Hop Saturated Ale 8.5% ABV, Desert Planet -Hop Saturated Ale 8.5%, Deep Fried Porg, College Deep Friend Beers -Hop Saturated Ale 10.1% and the Dark Side DELUXE -4% ABV Blueberry, Cherry, heavy Saber -Toasted Marshmallow, a touch of Roasted Habaneros, and Midnight Pastry.  These all killed with Desert being the fav for us.

We were drooling over the food truck offerings of Fried Porg Bucket (chicken tenders with RAR seasoned waffle friends and choice of sauce), Mojo Pork Tacos, Birria Beef Tacos and Chicken tacos.  The Friend Porg bucket arrived in a square brown container; we missed the novelty of the Porg bucket offering.  The chicken tenders and fries were amazing along with a side of honey mustard.  We saw many other attendees enjoying the “deep friend Porg” along with the various taco options.

RAR’s Deep Fried Porgs

Even Fett had to get in on the Galactic Grill. Good thing he removed his helmet before eating the fries.

The second music act Black Dog Alley band provided a very mellow and friendly atmosphere among Fest goers.  Most folks walking by were swaying or bobbing their heads to the beat.  A few folks were seen dancing together.  We listened and relaxed to cover songs by the Beatles, Stevie Wonder and Gnarles Barkley.

The music at the event was wonderful

This dog friendly event gave dog loving fest goers plenty to enjoy.  A friendly Pit bull puppy near us enjoyed some leftover Porg and fries.  We were immediate friends and shared some cuddles.

We purchased beer to go, some merchandise and some art from a local vendor.  We highly recommend checking out this yearly RAR May the 4th be with you events even if you aren’t a Star Wars fan.  We highly recommend checking out the quaint town of Cambridge Maryland and absolutely recommend checking out RAR Brewing company.  We can’t wait to visit again!

Beer Review: Chewbacca (Rotunda Brewing Company) https://thebeerthrillers.com/2025/04/29/beer-review-chewbacca-rotunda-brewing-company/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=beer-review-chewbacca-rotunda-brewing-company Wed, 30 Apr 2025 02:45:07 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=16296 Beer Review: Chewbacca by Rotunda Brewing Company

I first had this beer back in October of 2019. (Which feels like ancient history.) And I remember wanting to write a review of it even back then for the site…. and for some reason I never did. Not sure why exactly. Maybe I just didn’t get around to it or something, but I even kept my photo of the beer on my desktop screen this whole time. Ironically, I recently had it again, so what better opportunity to revisit the beer for my second beer review release for Andor: Season 2. Last week I reviewed – Admiral (J Henry Barrel Aged Grand Stout) by Delta Beer Lab – and so this week, we’ll taking a look at a much closer brewery – Rotunda Brewing Company with their Imperial Black IPA (or Imperial Cascadian IPA). This is one of my favorite styles of beer, I love Black IPAs, and Double Black IPAs are event better.

But before we dive in, I want everyone to please take a look at our stream / podcast / video we made on YouTube. It stars myself, Drew of Knights of Nostalgia, and Tim (Aglets). You can view it here:

In the video we cover the first three episodes of Andor. So please be sure to check it out!

And now, onto the review!

Chewbacca by Rotunda Brewing Company (at the Rising Sun in 2019)

The Beer Review: Chewbacca by Rotunda Brewing Company

Beer: Chewbacca
Brewery: Rotunda Brewing Company
Style: Imperial Black IPA / Double Black IPA
ABV: 8%
IBU: N / A
Untappd Description: (Blank)

Let’s check out this Wookie beast (not to be confused with the Wookie Monster by Fourscore). Will someone get this Walking Carpet out of my way so I can type!

Appearance

Chewbacca pours a deep, opaque brown-almost bordering on black-with a creamy, tan head that lingers like a loyal Wookiee companion. The lacing is impressive, clinging to the glass with each sip, leaving behind a trail reminiscent of hyperspace streaks.

Aroma

Right out of the gate, there’s a punch of roasted malt-think dark chocolate and fresh-brewed coffee-balanced by a piney, resinous hop profile. There’s a subtle undercurrent of caramel and a hint of citrus, like orange peel, that peeks through as it warms. The aroma is bold and inviting, promising complexity.

Chewbacca by Rotunda Brewing Company

Taste

The first sip delivers a satisfying interplay between roasted malt bitterness and assertive hop character. Notes of espresso and bittersweet cocoa dominate up front, quickly joined by pine, grapefruit, and a touch of earthy spice. The Black IPA style shines here: the hops never overwhelm the malt backbone, instead weaving together in a harmonious, chewy mouthfeel. The 9.2% ABV is well-hidden, but there’s a gentle warmth in the finish that lets you know this is a beer worthy of a Wookiee.

Mouthfeel

Medium to full-bodied, with a creamy carbonation that lifts the flavors without feeling heavy. The finish is dry, with lingering roast and a pleasant, resinous bitterness that invites another sip.

Overall Impressions

Chewbacca is a robust, well-executed Black IPA that balances dark roast and hop bite with finesse. It’s a bold tribute to its namesake-complex, powerful, and just a little wild. Whether you’re a Star Wars fan or simply a lover of big, hoppy dark ales, this is a beer that deserves a spot in your cantina. Untappd’s 3.8/5 rating feels right, but I’d nudge it a bit higher for the sheer fun and craftsmanship.

Wrap Up

My Untappd Rating: ****.25
Global Untappd Rating: 3.8 (out of nearly 1000 ratings) (as of 4.25.25)

May the hops be with you-always.

I’m gonna have to check the archives of the site here, or on my computer, to see if I have any notes or anything from the initial first time I drank the beer, if maybe I started a review and then sadly – for whatever reason – never got around to finishing it. Maybe I was waiting for the right chance to post it, and never found it. Who knows, there’s over 70+ articles in my “draft” folder here on the site, some day I’ll get around to posting them…. unfortunately that day is not today though. But be sure to come back to the site, who knows, maybe it’ll be tomorrow…..

And check back next Tuesday for another (hopefully) Star Wars themed beer release. Over the weekened is May the Fourth Be With You, so once again, hopefully I’ll be able to grab some of the RAR Star Wars themed beers and will be able to review them weekly!

Cheers all and thank you for reading!

Double Perpetual IPA by Troegs Independent Brewing

Troegs Brewing Releasing Double Perpetual IPA

On August 19th, Troegs Independent Brewing will be releasing Double Perpetual IPA; their new once-yearly release. Taking the place of Hop Cyclone in the rotation of Double IPAs this year, Double Perpetual IPA will be making its official debut as a non-scratch beer.

Double Perpetual IPA was previously released last year as Scratch #500 alongside Scratch #501 – known as Triple Perpetual. (See: Troegs Brewing is Releasing Scratch 500 Double Perpetual and Scratch 501 Triple Perpetual.) Where Triple Perpetual IPA was a “happy mistake”, Double Perpetual IPA was released as an anniversary of their 500th scratch release (Troegs Brewing’s version of research and development), Double Perpetual IPA was an immediate fan favorite. So Triple Perpetual IPA became Scratch 501 and the new Double Perpetual IPA became Scratch 500.

The original release of Scratch 500 Double Perpetual IPA came with this write – up by Troegs Brewing:

Do you remember the world before Perpetual, when Tröegs didn’t brew an IPA? Well, Citra hops and a half dozen Scratch batches later, our beloved Imperial Pale Ale was born. To commemorate the Scratch #500 milestone, we’re putting a bigger, bolder version in your hands. Double Perpetual cycles through copious amounts of Cascade, Chinook, Nugget and Citra hops on its way to stickier notes of citrus, pine and tropical fruit. To infinity…

Nimble Giant Returns Monday June 10th, 2024

As you might have seen from our Instagram account Nimble Giant will be making its awaited return on Monday, June 10th, 2024. This yearly beer by Troegs Independent Brewing is one of their most sought after and beloved beers of the year (alongside Nugget Nectar and Mad Elf). This is a bold, beautiful, strong, delicious DIPA (Double IPA), clocking in at 9.0% and knocking your socks off with how smooth, easy drinking, and wonderful it is. You can easily plow through an entire case without noticing (as Drew of Knights of Nostalgia and I can attest from Wednesday night). (You can see us drinking our Nimble Giant case during our Acolyte episode reviews – found here: Consuming Brews and Media – The Acolyte Episode 1 Review).  (And definitely check out this YouTube short and reel of YORD nonsense.)

Nimble Giant

Tröegs Independent Brewing is set to release its fan-favorite double IPA, Nimble Giant on Monday (June 10th, 2024). One of the independent brewery’s most beloved beers, Nimble Giant is a limited annual release that rivals the excitement generated by its iconic holiday ale, Mad Elf.

Nimble Giant began as part of Tröegs’ small-batch Scratch Series, originally experimenting with Mosaic hops. After half a dozen test batches, the Tröegs brewing team discovered a perfect hop combination: Mosaic, Simcoe, and Azacca.

“We loved our earliest trials with Mosaic,” says John Trogner, Tröegs co-founder and brewmaster. “When we started dry-hopping with Mosaic and Simcoe together, we knew we had something special. Fans would stop me on the street and rave about the Scratch batches.”

With an ABV of 9%, Nimble Giant features notes of tropical fruit, pine sap, and honeysuckle. Backed by pilsner and Vienna malts, this deep orange-hued double IPA achieves a perfect balance between malt and hops.

Nimble Giant scores an ‘Outstanding’ on BeerAdvocate and consistently ranks in the top ten trending beers on Untappd upon its release.

Nimble Giant is available on draft and in 16-oz. cans across the brewery’s entire distribution footprint. Also look for it on draft at the Troegs Brewery, as well as in select restaurants, pubs, and other locations. You can also order sixtels from the General Store at Troegs Brewery.

Beer drinkers can find Nimble Giant and other Tröegs beers near them using the Tröegs Brew Finder.

Nimble Giant cracked open and ready to be enjoyed while we record our Acolyte Episode reviews.

Storm the Field, as we mentioned here – Troegs Brewing Teams Up with Sworn Brewing, Antifragile Brewing, and Warwick Farms Brewing for Storm the Field – was brewed for the Hoppy Valley Brewfest. I got to try the beer out, both on draft, and in can before the brewfest, and then at the brewfest I brought the remainder of the four pack for the hotel, and we all got to try it – Josh, Drew, Amy, and I, while playing board games.

From our Storm the Field article:

A couple of weeks ago we announced and shared information on our social media pages of Sworn Brewing, Antifragile brewing, and Warwick Farm Brewing being at the Troegs Brewery to collaborate on an upcoming beer for the Hoppy Valley Brewfest. The three visiting breweries met up at Troegs Brewery to brew a West Coast Double IPA. Part of a series of collaborations for the year that Troegs Brewing is doing (they’ve also collaborated with Dewy Beer Co, Tonewood Brewing, Free Will Brewing, and more).

Troegs Tasting Notes: Brewed in collaboration with Antifragile, Warwick Farm and Sworn brewing companies, we’re celebrating at the 50-yard line with this Double IPA. Storm the Field leans into juicier, modern West Coast-style flavors atop the pilsner and Vienna malt bill. Azacca, Nectaron and Citra hops build notes of nectarine, peach and a touch of pine. Crisp but not intensely bitter, WE ARE … pouring this at the inaugural Hoppy Valley Brewers Fest.

Beer: Storm the Field

Style: West Coast IPA – Imperial / Double

Untappd Description: Brewed in collaboration with Antifragile, Warwick Farm and Sworn brewing companies, we’re celebrating at the 50-yard line with this Double IPA.

Overview:
“Storm the Field” is a collaboration between Tröegs Independent Brewing and three other Pennsylvania breweries—Antifragile Brewing, Warwick Farm Brewing, and Sworn Brewing. This West Coast-style Double IPA is brewed to celebrate the inaugural Hoppy Valley Brewers Fest, bringing a unique blend of flavors to the table.

Appearance:
This beer pours a golden amber color, with a slightly hazy appearance and a frothy white head that leaves a nice lacing on the glass.

Aroma:
On the nose, “Storm the Field” offers a vibrant bouquet of citrus and stone fruits. The Azacca, Nectaron, and Citra hops contribute notes of nectarine, peach, and a hint of pine, creating an inviting and aromatic profile.

Taste:
This Double IPA is crisp yet not overly bitter, striking a balance with its juicy West Coast flavors. The malt bill of pilsner and Vienna malts provides a sturdy backbone that allows the hop character to shine through without overwhelming the palate. Expect flavors of ripe peach and nectarine, with subtle pine undertones.

Mouthfeel:
At 9.2% ABV, the beer has a medium to full body, offering a smooth and slightly resinous mouthfeel. It’s both refreshing and satisfying, making it a good choice for those who enjoy a well-rounded Double IPA.

Overall Impression:
“Storm the Field” is a standout beer, especially for fans of West Coast IPAs. The collaboration between the four breweries results in a brew that is both flavorful and well-balanced, making it a great addition to any beer enthusiast’s lineup.

My Untappd Rating: ****.25

Troegs Brewing Releasing Second Cut Mango Double IPA https://thebeerthrillers.com/2024/04/18/troegs-brewing-releasing-second-cut-mango-double-ipa/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=troegs-brewing-releasing-second-cut-mango-double-ipa Thu, 18 Apr 2024 12:27:15 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=14814

Troegs Brewing Releasing Second Cut DIPA

Back in October of 2023 we announced that Troegs Brewing would be releasing a “Double Cut” version of First Cut, and its finally time for the release. Welcome to Second Cut DIPA. The newest scheduled ‘once a year’ or ‘yearly’ release by Troegs Brewing in their DIPA (Double IPA) series. Second Cut will be releasing on April 22nd, 2024. (Perfectly in time for Earth Day.)

Unlike the above original label image, the Second Cut DIPA will be coming in at 8.5% ABV rather than 9.5%. It will be a Double IPA and is based off the Scratch 507 formula and recipe. It is a double version of First Cut IPA – so expect bright flavorful notes of Mango.

The newest DIPA to hit Troegs Brewery is an amplified version of First Cut IPA. A mango hoppy IPA that is a fan favorite at the brewery that sees just brewery release (and in this year’s fashion also limited local distribution). Second Cut DIPA will be seeing distribution as is befitting a new ‘once a year’ beer at Troegs. Expect it out on the markets starting on April 22nd, gradually hitting the further away markets as the days go by.

Second Cut DIPA is similar in how Troegs has released Double Nugget Nectar and Double Perpetual IPA. (Look for Double Perpetual IPA to be making a return later this year as well.)

First Cut

From our previous article – Second Cut DIPA Releasing This Spring – here are the notes of First Cut. Expect this x2 for Second Cut IPA:

The First Cut is a fan favorite and has a bit of a ‘cult following’ at the brewery. It is a 6.2% IPA – American style, with 45 IBU. Its typically released late February to early March each year at the brewery in Hershey. It has over 52,000 ratings on Untappd with a global average rating of 3.79 (as of 10.13.23). The Untappd description reads: Each spring, hop growers dust off their pruning shears and trim the first shoots, bolstering the bines for a rich growing season. First Cut – a mouthful of silky Simcoe and a touch of mango – is a nod to this ritual, without which the world would be a less hoppy place.

Second Cut DIPA Releasing This Spring – First Cut Notes

Release

Second Cut Mango DIPA will be releasing on April 22nd, 2024 at the brewery as well as in distribution. The brewery opens at 11:30AM Monday, April 22nd, 2024. Second Cut will come in four packs of 16 oz pounder cans, and in cases. It will also be on draft in the store. There could potentially be sixtels for sale for customers as well. There is currently no listed limits for the purchases, and online sales of the beer will go live at 11:30AM as well.

Second Cut Release

(Update: 4.21.24)

Second Cut IPA

From Troegs Brewing’s Facebook post today:

As the hop growing season flourishes, farmers dust off their pruning shears bolstering the bines climbing skyward. Two days until a new seasonal Double IPA arrives. #Troegs#DoubleIPA

Beer Review of Pliny the Elder: Is It the Best Double IPA of 2024? https://thebeerthrillers.com/2024/02/23/beer-review-of-pliny-the-elder-is-it-the-best-double-ipa-of-2024/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=beer-review-of-pliny-the-elder-is-it-the-best-double-ipa-of-2024 Sat, 24 Feb 2024 03:00:26 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=15291

Pliny the Elder by Russian River Brewing Company

Introduction

Pliny the Elder, brewed by Russian River Brewing Company, is one of the most celebrated Double IPAs in the craft beer world. Since its introduction, it has consistently ranked high on beer lists and won numerous awards. In this review, we’ll delve into what makes Pliny the Elder so special and whether it still holds up in 2024.

History and Background

Russian River Brewing Company, located in Santa Rosa, California, was founded by Korbel Champagne Cellars in 1997. Vinnie Cilurzo, the current owner and brewmaster, took over in 2003. Pliny the Elder, named after the Roman naturalist and historian who first documented hops, was one of the early trailblazers of the Double IPA style. Its creation set a new standard for hoppy beers and helped popularize the style.

Russian River Brewing Company

Russian River Brewing Company, founded in 1997 in Santa Rosa, California, has become a cornerstone of the American craft beer movement. Initially started by Korbel Champagne Cellars, the brewery underwent a significant transformation when Vinnie and Natalie Cilurzo took ownership in 2003. Under their stewardship, Russian River quickly garnered a reputation for producing high-quality, innovative beers. Vinnie Cilurzo, a pioneer in the industry, is credited with brewing the first commercially marketed Double IPA, which set the stage for the brewery’s future successes.

Russian River’s commitment to excellence is evident in their diverse beer portfolio, which includes both hop-forward beers and expertly crafted sour ales. Their flagship beer, Pliny the Elder, has become a benchmark for Double IPAs, celebrated for its balance and complex hop profile. In addition to Pliny, the brewery is renowned for its barrel-aged sour beers, such as Supplication and Consecration, which showcase their expertise in blending and aging. These beers have not only won numerous awards but also have captivated the palates of beer enthusiasts around the world.

Beyond their beer, Russian River Brewing Company has played a significant role in fostering a sense of community within the craft beer industry. They host the annual “Pliny the Younger” release, a much-anticipated event that draws beer lovers from across the globe to their Santa Rosa and Windsor locations. This dedication to community engagement extends to their philanthropic efforts, with the brewery regularly supporting local charities and causes. Through their commitment to quality, innovation, and community, Russian River Brewing Company continues to be a leader in the craft beer world, inspiring brewers and drinkers alike.

Russian River Brewing Company is a pinnacle in the craft beer community.

Appearance

Pliny the Elder by Russian River Brewing Company

Pliny the Elder pours a clear golden amber with a moderate, foamy white head that leaves a nice lacing on the glass. The beer’s clarity and color are immediately inviting, signaling a well-crafted brew. The head retention is impressive, maintaining a thin cap throughout the drinking experience, which enhances the visual appeal.

Aroma

The aroma of Pliny the Elder is a delightful bouquet of fresh pine, citrus, and floral notes. There’s a dominant scent of grapefruit and pine needles, complemented by subtle hints of malt sweetness. The aroma is robust and tantalizing, setting high expectations for the taste. As the beer warms, additional nuances of tropical fruits, such as mango and pineapple, become more apparent, adding to its complexity.

Taste

On the palate, Pliny the Elder delivers a complex yet balanced flavor profile. The initial taste is a burst of citrus and pine, with grapefruit and orange zest leading the way. As the beer settles on the mid-palate, notes of resinous pine and floral hops become more pronounced. The malt backbone provides a slight caramel sweetness that perfectly balances the hop bitterness. The aftertaste is clean and crisp, with a lingering bitterness that invites another sip.

What sets Pliny the Elder apart is its ability to be intensely hoppy without being overwhelming. The interplay between the hops and malt creates a harmonious balance that many Double IPAs struggle to achieve. Each sip reveals new layers of flavor, making it a beer that you can enjoy both quickly and thoughtfully.

Mouthfeel

Pliny the Elder has a medium body with a smooth, slightly dry mouthfeel. The carbonation is just right, providing a refreshing effervescence without being too fizzy. The beer feels well-rounded and satisfying on the tongue, making it easy to enjoy despite its higher alcohol content (8% ABV). The finish is dry and crisp, encouraging the next sip.

Overall Impression

Pliny the Elder lives up to its legendary status. It’s a well-balanced, flavorful Double IPA that showcases the best qualities of hops and malt. Whether you’re a seasoned craft beer enthusiast or new to the world of IPAs, Pliny the Elder is a must-try. It’s no wonder this beer has remained a favorite among beer aficionados for years.

Rating: 9.5/10

Food Pairings

Pliny the Elder pairs wonderfully with a variety of foods. Here are some suggestions:

  • Spicy Dishes: The beer’s hoppy bitterness can complement and cool down spicy foods like buffalo wings or spicy Thai curry.
  • Grilled Meats: The citrus and pine notes enhance the flavors of grilled chicken, pork, or steak.
  • Cheeses: Pair with aged cheddar or gouda for a delightful contrast between the beer’s bitterness and the cheese’s richness.
  • Seafood: The beer’s bright, citrusy notes complement the delicate flavors of seafood dishes like grilled shrimp or fish tacos.
  • Desserts: Try pairing with a citrus-based dessert like lemon tart to highlight the beer’s fruity notes.

Brewer’s Notes

Pliny the Elder was first brewed in 2000 and was one of the first commercially brewed Double IPAs. It is named after the Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder, who first mentioned hops in his writings. The beer is brewed with Amarillo, Centennial, CTZ, and Simcoe hops, which contribute to its distinctive aroma and flavor. The brewing process involves multiple hop additions, including a generous dry hopping stage, to maximize the hop character.

Untappd notes: 8% ABV, 100 IBU, and has over 280,000 ratings, with a global average rating of 4.5.

Untappd description reads: “PLINY THE ELDER – (Double IPA) Brewed with Amarillo, Centennial, CTZ, Cascade, Warrior, and Simcoe hops. Well-balanced with malt, hops, and alcohol. Slightly bitter with aromas of citrus, pine, and floral”

Comparisons to Other Double IPAs

When comparing Pliny the Elder to other Double IPAs, its balance and drinkability stand out. While some Double IPAs can be overwhelmingly bitter or overly sweet, Pliny strikes a perfect harmony. Beers like The Alchemist’s Heady Topper or Tree House Brewing’s Julius offer different takes on the style, with Heady Topper leaning towards more intense bitterness and Julius showcasing juicy, fruity hop flavors. Pliny the Elder, however, maintains a classic profile that has stood the test of time.

Pliny the Elder and Nimble Giant are two highly esteemed Double IPAs that showcase the diverse approaches to the style by their respective breweries, Russian River Brewing Company and Tröegs Independent Brewing. Pliny the Elder is celebrated for its balanced profile, offering a harmonious blend of pine, citrus, and floral hop notes, supported by a subtle malt backbone that provides a smooth, drinkable experience despite its 8% ABV. Nimble Giant, on the other hand, leans towards a more robust and juicy hop character, with prominent tropical fruit flavors such as mango and pineapple, alongside resinous pine and a slightly sweeter malt presence. Both beers are exemplary in their own right, with Pliny the Elder appealing to those who appreciate a classic, well-balanced Double IPA, while Nimble Giant caters to those who enjoy a more fruit-forward, intense hop experience.

Consumer Opinions

Pliny the Elder has garnered a cult following over the years. Beer enthusiasts often praise its consistency and quality. Many reviews highlight its balanced hop profile, clean finish, and the ability to enjoy multiple servings without palate fatigue. The beer has become a benchmark for the Double IPA style, with many breweries aiming to replicate its success.

Untappd

My Rating: ****.5
Global Untappd Rating: 4.4995 (or 4.5) (as of 2.26.24).

Conclusion

Pliny the Elder is a benchmark in the world of craft beer, particularly within the Double IPA category. Its masterful balance of hops and malt, combined with its rich history and consistent quality, make it a beer that every craft beer lover should experience. Whether you’re revisiting it or trying it for the first time, Pliny the Elder is sure to impress.

Pliny the Elder stands as a testament to the artistry and dedication of Russian River Brewing Company. Its ability to balance intense hop flavors with a smooth, drinkable malt backbone sets it apart from many other Double IPAs. This beer has not only withstood the test of time but continues to be a benchmark in the craft beer industry. Its consistent quality and refined complexity make it a must-try for both seasoned beer enthusiasts and newcomers alike.

Moreover, Pliny the Elder’s legacy is bolstered by its historical significance. As one of the first commercially brewed Double IPAs, it paved the way for an entire genre of hoppy beers that have become staples in the craft beer world. The beer’s namesake, Pliny the Elder, who first documented hops in his writings, adds an intriguing historical depth that complements its modern-day acclaim. This blend of history and innovation has helped Pliny the Elder maintain its iconic status.

In summary, Pliny the Elder is more than just a beer; it’s a symbol of the craft beer revolution. Its harmonious blend of flavors, rich history, and the unwavering dedication of Russian River Brewing Company make it an enduring favorite. Whether you’re enjoying it for the first time or revisiting an old favorite, Pliny the Elder offers a consistently exceptional experience that continues to set the standard for Double IPAs worldwide.

We are working on a massive project here at The Beer Thrillers. We are creating a map of all of the breweries across the United States. State by state we are adding maps of all of the different states with every brewery in each state. (We will eventually get to the US Territories, as well as the Canadian Provinces, and possibly more countries; as well as doing some fun maps like a map of all the breweries we’ve been to, and other fun maps.) You can find the brewery maps here:

We are also working on a project of creating printable and downloadable PDFs and resources to be able to check and keep track of all of the breweries you’ve been to. So stay tuned for that project once we are finished with the Brewery Maps of the US States.
